RESUMO

AIM: Many countries have detailed recommendations for haemophilia patients to reduce the risk of vaccination-related bleeding. However, data from developing countries are lacking. We investigated scheduled vaccinations and vaccination-related bleeding complications in Chinese children with haemophilia and analysed issues related to vaccinations. METHODS: Children with haemophilia in the PUMCH Haemophilia Treatment Centre were contacted via telephone. We distributed a vaccination questionnaire to their parents. The severity of haemophilia, coagulation factor infusions before vaccination, injection mode, and vaccination-related complications were analysed. RESULTS: A total of 440 valid questionnaires were received from 27 of 34 provinces in China. 31.3% (138/440) of the children with haemophilia did not receive all of their vaccinations. Among the children who received vaccinations, 48.1% (197/409) experienced bleeding complications. In patients with severe haemophilia, those on regular prophylaxis had a lower incidence of local hematoma compared to those on intermittent or no prophylaxis (14.3% vs. 26.5% vs. 39.7%, P < 0.05). The incidence of local hematomas was lower by subcutaneous (SQ) injections than by intramuscular injections (24.6% vs. 35.3%, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The vaccination rate is quite insufficient in Chinese children with haemophilia. Missed vaccinations are related to vaccination-related bleeding complications. Prophylaxis before vaccination and SQ injections would help reduce bleeding complications.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate bidirectional genetic relationships between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and COVID-19. METHODS: We investigated potential causal associations between PTSD and two COVID-19 conditions (COVID-19 hospitalization and SARS-CoV-2 infection) via Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses. Three genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary datasets were used in the study, including PTSD (N = 174,659), SARS-CoV-2 infection (N = 2,597,856), and COVID-19 hospitalization (N = 2,095,324). We performed a literature-based analysis to uncover molecular pathways connecting PTSD and COVID-19. RESULTS: We found that PTSD exerts a causal effect on SARS-CoV-2 infection (odds ratio (OR): 1.10, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.00-1.21, p = 0.048) and hospitalized COVID-19 (OR: 1.34, 95% CI: 1.07-1.67, p = 0.001). However, both SARS-CoV-2 infection and hospitalized COVID-19 were not associated with the risk of PTSD. Pathway analysis revealed that several immunity-related genes may link PTSD to COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that PTSD was associated with increased risks for COVID-19 susceptibility and severity. Early diagnosis and effective treatment of PTSD in individuals infected with the coronavirus may improve the management of the outcomes of COVID-19.

RESUMO

Graphene films that can theoretically block almost all molecules have emerged as promising candidate materials for moisture barrier films in the applications of organic photonic devices and gas storage. However, the current barrier performance of graphene films does not reach the ideal value. Here, we reveal that the interlayer distance of the large-area stacked multilayer graphene is the key factor that suppresses water permeation. We show that by minimizing the gap between the two monolayers, the water vapor transmission rate of double-layer graphene can be as low as 5 × 10-3 g/(m2 d) over an A4-sized region. The high barrier performance was achieved by the absence of interfacial contamination and conformal contact between graphene layers during layer-by-layer transfer. Our work reveals the moisture permeation mechanism through graphene layers, and with this approach, we can tailor the interlayer coupling of manually stacked two-dimensional materials for new physics and applications.

RESUMO

Antinuclear antibody (ANA) can be positive in children with primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), but the effect of ANA titre and its variation on outcomes of children with primary ITP remains unclear. Here, we conducted a single-centre retrospective cohort study of children with primary ITP at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital in China. A total of 324 children with primary ITP included in this study were followed for a median time of 25 months. In this cohort, 39.2% had an ANA titre of 1:160 or higher. Results from a generalized estimating equation model revealed that patients with higher ANA titres had lower platelet counts at onset but a higher recovery rate of subsequent platelet counts. Results from Cox regression models adjusted for potential confounders revealed that patients with ANA titres of 1:160 or more were more likely to develop to autoimmune disease (AID) than those without, and the risk of AID development increased with the rise of ANA titres (p value for trend less than 0.001). These data highlight the predictive value of ANA titre for platelet counts and the risk of AID development in children with primary ITP.

RESUMO

Notum, one of the key serine hydrolases in mammals, hydrolyzes the palmitoleoyl moieties of many important proteins and modulates multiple signaling pathways including Wnt/ß-catenin signaling. Notum is tightly associated with multiple human diseases, but the reliable and practical tools for sensing Notum activities in complex biological systems are rarely reported. Herein, an efficient strategy was used to rationally construct a specific bioluminescent substrate for Notum. Following computer-aided molecular design and experimental verification, octanoyl luciferin (OL) was selected as the optimum substrate for human Notum, with excellent specificity, high detection sensitivity and high signal-to-noise ratio. Under physiological conditions, OL was readily hydrolyzed by Notum or Notum-containing biological specimens to release d-luciferin that could be easily detected by various fluorescence devices in the presence of luciferase. The applicability of OL for real-time sensing native Notum was examined in living cells, extracellular matrix, and tissue preparations. OL was also used for constructing a high-throughput assay for screening of Notum inhibitors, while a natural compound (bergapten) was newly identified as a potent Notum inhibitor. Collectively, this study devises a reliable and easy-to-use tool for sensing Notum activities in biological systems, which will strongly facilitate hNotum-associated fundamental studies, disease diagnosis, and drug discovery.

RESUMO

The extensive health-promoting effects of Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (CRP) have attracted researchers' interest. The difference in storage time, varieties and origin of CRP are closely related to the content of bioactive compounds they contain. The consitituent transformation mediated by environmental microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) and the production of new bioactive components during the storage process may be the main reason for 'the older, the better' of CRP. In addition, the gap in price between different varieties can be as large as 8 times, while the difference due to age can even reach 20 times, making the 'marketing young-CRP as old-CRP and counterfeiting origin' flood the entire market, seriously harming consumers' interests. However, so far, the research on CRP is relatively decentralized. In particular, a summary of the microbial transformation and authenticity identification of CRP has not been reported. Therefore, this review systematically summarized the recent advances on the main bioactive compounds, the major biological activities, the microbial transformation process, the structure, and content changes of the active substances during the transformation process, and authenticity identification of CRP. Furthermore, challenges and perspectives concerning the future research on CRP were proposed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Thyroid dysfunction has been proved to contribute to the occurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF), leading to the development of AF in animal models and clinical populations. This single-center study investigated the relationship between ultra-sensitive thyroid-stimulating hormone (uTSH) levels and the recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in 575 hospitalized patients who had undergone catheter ablation. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study enrolled 575 hospitalized patients with AF who needed catheter ablation, 105 were non-first catheter ablation patients, and 470 were first catheter ablation (CA) patients. Before ablation, fasting biochemical indexes, including uTSH, were detected. Patients were classified according to uTSH quartile. The presence of AF was confirmed by 12-lead electrocardiogram or 24-h ambulatory electrocardiogram. RESULTS A total of 105 (18.44%) patients had undergone catheter ablation of AF twice or more. Univariate logistic regression analysis showed no significant relationship between uTSH and AF recurrence (HR, 1.047; 95% CI 0.986-1.111; P=1.127). Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that compared with low quartiles (Q1 OR, 0.71, 95% CI: 0.35-1.46; P=0.36; Q2 OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.36-1.39; P=0.31;Q3 OR 0.22, 95% CI 0.09-0.53; P=0.001), high quartiles of uTSH had a higher risk of AF recurrence. After adjusting for sex, the risk of AF recurrence in the high quartile uTSH was higher in males than in the low quartile (Q1 OR, 0.60, 95% CI: 0.29-1.26; P=0.18;Q2 OR, 0.52, 95% CI, 0.24-1.13; P=0.09;Q3 OR, 0.42, 95% CI, 0.18-0.94; P=0.03), but not in women. CONCLUSIONS Serum TSH levels in male patients treated for AF with cardiac ablation were significantly associated with AF recurrence.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND This study from a single center in Beijing, China, included 412 patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation. We aimed to determine whether pre-ablation serum lipid levels were related to recurrence of atrial fibrillation (RAF). MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 412 patients with AF who underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation were enrolled in the study. Fasting levels of triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol (TC), were measured at baseline before ablation, and patients were classified according to lipid level quartiles (Q1-Q4). RAF was affirmed via 24-h electrocardiography or 12-lead electrocardiography. RESULTS A total of 82 (19.90%) patients experienced RAF. After adjusting for other relevant factors and sex, univariate logistic regression analysis revealed LDL-C (hazard ratio [HR], 1.17; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.93-1.47) and TC (HR, 1.17; 95% CI, 0.96-1.42) levels were not significantly related to RAF. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that, compared with the highest quartile (Q4), female patients with lower quartiles of TC had higher RAF, especially Q3 (HR, 16.24; 95% CI, 1.14-231.56). LDL-C levels were higher in Q1 than in Q4 but lower in Q2 and Q3 than in Q4 (Q1: HR, 1.34; 95% CI, 0.08-18.89; Q2: HR, 0.09, 95% CI, 0.06-1.52; Q3: HR, 0.02, 95% CI, 0.14-0.57). CONCLUSIONS This study showed RAF in almost 20% of treated patients and RAF was significantly related to pre-ablation serum levels of LDL-C and TC in women.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Self-management behaviours can be crucial to improving disease symptoms and health outcomes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Currently, the tools available for measuring self-management behaviours in RA patients are either generalized for patients with chronic diseases, which lack specificity or have poor reliability in the only specific scale-self-care behaviours scale (SCBS). The aim of this study was to develop a self-management behaviours scale for RA patients and evaluate its psychometric properties. METHODS: The study included two steps: scale development and the psychometric evaluation. The items were developed from a literature review, in-depth individual interviews, nominal group technique, Delphi expert consultation, and a pilot test. For the psychometric evaluation, a sample of 561 patients with RA was recruited. Item analysis, content validity, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, convergent and discriminant validity, and internal consistency reliability were conducted to examine the psychometric properties of the RA-SMBS. RESULTS: The final scale consists of 23 items with 4 dimensions, including medication management, exercise and joint protection, resource utilization and emotional management, and symptom management. The content validity index was 0.78. Exploratory factor analysis explained 61.89% of the total item variance. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the RA-SMBS fit well. Good internal consistency reliability was demonstrated (Cronbach's alpha = 0.908), and the test-retest reliability was found to be acceptable (ICC = 0.628, r = 0.780). CONCLUSIONS: The scale has good content validity, construct validity, and internal consistency reliability. It can be used to assess the level of self-management behaviours in RA patients.

RESUMO

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) patients are at risk developing to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in the future. Our study attempted to explore the potential risk factors for the development from ITP to SLE in Chinese children by statistical analysis. This study was a retrospective case-control study. Patients diagnosed with ITP and developed to SLE after the diagnosis of ITP were defined as the case group. The control group consisted of children with ITP but without developing to SLE was recruited with a ratio of 1:2. Besides univariable analysis, multivariable logistic regression was built to evaluate the potential risk factors. A total of 150 children was included with 50 in the case group and 100 in the control group. Median developing time from ITP to SLE was 34.5 [IQR 12.5, 58.75] months. ANA was found significantly different between the two groups in our study in the univariable analysis but not in the multivariable analysis (OR = 4.50, 95% CI 0.97 to 21.01). Age diagnosed ITP was positively associated with SLE (OR = 1.07 every 5 years, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.15) with alert point at 8 years old (sensitivity 0.82, specificity 0.60). A lower level of complement was also positively associated with SLE (OR = 8.33, 95% CI 1.62 to 42.91). A minimum 3-year of close follow-up for pediatric ITP patients was recommended to monitor the risk for developing SLE. Older age and hypocomplementemia were potential risk factors for the development from ITP to SLE.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether liver stiffness (LS) can predict adverse cardiac events in Chinese patients with heart failure (HF). METHODS: A total of 53 hospitalized patients with HF were enrolled, and LS and tricuspid annual plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) were determined with Fibroscan® and echocardiography before discharge. They were divided into two groups: high LS group (LS > 6.9 Kpa, n = 23) and low LS group (LS ≤ 6.9 Kpa, n = 30). Patients were followed up for 24 months at an interval of 3 months. The endpoint of follow-up was death or rehospitalization for HF. RESULTS: All patients were followed up for 24 months or until the endpoint. Patients in the high LS group had lower platelet count (P = 0.014), lower creatine clear rate (P = 0.014), higher level of B-type natriuretic peptide at discharge (P = 0.012), and lower TAPSE (P < 0.001) than those in the low LS group. During 24 months of follow-up, 3 (5.7%) deaths and 21 (39.6%) hospitalizations for HF were observed. Patients in the high LS group had a higher rate of death/rehospitalization than those in the low LS group (Hazard ratio 4.81; 95% confidence interval 1.69-13.7, P = 0.003) after adjustment for age, sex, platelet count, creatine clear rate, and B-type natriuretic peptide level. Moreover, TAPSE ≤ 16 could predict adverse cardiac events with an HR of 6.63 (95% confidence interval 1.69-13.7, P = 0.004) after adjustment for age, sex, platelet count, creatine clear rate, and B-type natriuretic peptide level. CONCLUSION: LS and TAPSE could be used to predict worse outcomes in patients with HF.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the validity and reliability of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) on screening of depression among patients with neurological disorders, and to explore factors influencing such patients. METHODS: In this study, 277 subjects who were admitted to the department of neurology of our hospital due to different neurological disorders completed the PHQ-9 questionnaire. The Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD) were employed to evaluate the depressive symptoms of patients who completed the PHQ-9 questionnaire. The internal consistency, criterion validity, structural validity, and optimal cut-off values of PHQ-9 were evaluated, and the consistency assessment was conducted between the depression severity as assessed by PHQ-9, HAMD and MINI. Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate the risk factors of depression. RESULTS: The Cronbach's α coefficient of the PHQ-9 was 0.839. The Pearson's correlation coefficient among the 9 items of the PHQ-9 scale was 0.160 ~ 0.578 (P < 0.01), and the Pearson's correlation coefficient between each item and the total score was at the range of 0.608 ~ 0.773. Taking the results of MINI as the gold standard, the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of the PHQ-9 results for all the subjects (n = 277) was 0.898 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.859 ~ 0.937, P < 0.01). When the cut-off score was equal to 5, the values of sensitivity, specificity, and the Youden's index were 91.2, 76.6%, and 0.678, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the influence of unemployment on the occurrence of depression was statistically significant (P = 0.027, OR = 3.080, 95%CI: 1.133 ~ 8.374). CONCLUSIONS: The application of PHQ-9 for screening of depression among Chinese patients with neurological disorders showed a good reliability and validity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patient education is recommended as an integral part of disease management in ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic rheumatic disease that predominantly affects young males and requires long-term disease management. Convenient and cost-effective approaches to deliver patient education are required to these patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the effects of a theory-based educational intervention delivered through a social networking app, WeChat, on disease knowledge, self-efficacy, exercise adherence, and health outcomes in Chinese AS patients. METHODS: This study was a single-blind randomized controlled trial conducted in a tertiary hospital in Chengdu, China. Eligible participants were randomly allocated to the intervention or control group. Participants in the control group received standard care. The intervention group received the health belief model (HBM)-based educational intervention, consisting of 4 individual educational sessions and educational information sharing through WeChat, the predominant social networking app in China. The primary outcomes were disease knowledge, self-efficacy, and exercise adherence. The secondary outcomes were disease activity and physical function. Data were collected at baseline and at the end of the intervention (12th week). Chi-square test, t test, Mann-Whitney U tests were used to examine the effects of educational intervention. RESULTS: This study included 118 patients with AS. The majority of participants were male (93/118, 78.8%). Around half of them were married (56/118, 47.5%), never smoked (70/118, 59.3%), and had college educational level or above (62/118, 52.5%). At posttest, participants in the intervention group had higher disease knowledge (all P<.001) and self-efficacy (P<.001), and a larger proportion of participants in the intervention group adhered to regular exercise routines than those in the control group (P=.003). The within-group analyses for the intervention group showed increases in all scores of disease knowledge (all P<.001) and self-efficacy score (P<.001), but only correct answer score (P=.04) and general knowledge score (P=.002) of disease knowledge in the control group improved. The within-group analysis for the control group found a decline of physical function (P=.002) but no significant change in disease activity (P>.05). The within-group analysis for the intervention group showed no significant change in disease activity or physical function (P>.05). At posttest, no statistically significant difference was found on disease activity or physical function between the intervention and control groups (P>.05). CONCLUSIONS: The HBM-based educational intervention through WeChat can effectively improve patient disease knowledge, self-efficacy, and exercise adherence. WeChat is feasible and effective to deliver patient education for patients with chronic diseases such as AS. This mHealth intervention can be integrated into routine rheumatology care. RESUMO

Deep learning has demonstrated remarkable performance in the medical domain, with accuracy that rivals or even exceeds that of human experts. However, it has a significant problem that these models are "black-box" structures, which means they are opaque, non-intuitive, and difficult for people to understand. This creates a barrier to the application of deep learning models in clinical practice due to lack of interpretability, trust, and transparency. To overcome this problem, several studies on interpretability have been proposed. Therefore, in this paper, we comprehensively review the interpretability of deep learning in medical diagnosis based on the current literature, including some common interpretability methods used in the medical domain, various applications with interpretability for disease diagnosis, prevalent evaluation metrics, and several disease datasets. In addition, the challenges of interpretability and future research directions are also discussed here. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that various applications of interpretability methods for disease diagnosis have been summarized.

RESUMO

Owing to the fascinating properties of graphene, fulfilling the promising characteristics of graphene in applications has ignited enormous scientific and industrial interest. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of graphene on metal substrates provides tantalizing opportunities for the large-area synthesis of graphene in a controllable manner. However, the tedious transfer of graphene from metal substrates onto desired substrates remains inevitable, and cracks of graphene membrane, transfer-induced doping, wrinkles as well as surface contamination can be incurred during the transfer, which highly degrade the performance of graphene. Furthermore, new issues can arise when moving to large-scale transfer at an industrial scale, thus cost-efficient and environment-friendly transfer techniques also become imperative. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive understanding of transfer-related issues and the corresponding experimental solutions and to provide an outlook for future transfer techniques of CVD graphene films on an industrial scale.

RESUMO

Sepsis, which is characterized by multiple organ dysfunctions as a result of an unbalanced host-inflammatory response to pathogens, is potentially a life-threatening condition and a major cause of death in the intensive care units (ICUs). However, effective treatment or intervention to prevent sepsis-associated lethality is still lacking. Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (hUC-MSC) transplantation has been shown to have potent immunomodulatory properties and improve tissue repair yet lacks direct antibacterial and endotoxin clearance activities. In this study, we engineered hUC-MSCs to express a broad-spectrum antibacterial fusion peptide containing BPI21 and LL-37 (named BPI21/LL-37) and confirmed that the BPI21/LL-37 modification did not affect the stemness and immunoregulatory capacities of hUC-MSCs but remarkably, enhanced its antibacterial and toxin-neutralizing activities in vitro. Furthermore, we showed that administration of BPI21/LL-37-engineered hUC-MSCs significantly reduces serum levels of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin 1ß (IL-1ß), and IL-6, whereas increases that of IL-10 in cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis mouse model. Administration of BPI21/LL-37-engineered hUC-MSCs significantly reduced systemic endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide [LPS]) levels and organ bacterial load, ameliorated damage to multiple organs, and improved survival. Taken together, our study demonstrates that BPI21/LL-37-engineered hUC-MSCs might offer a novel therapeutic strategy to prevent or treat sepsis via enhanced antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties to preserve organ functions better.

RESUMO

AIMS: To examine the effects of a tailored telehealth educational intervention on medication adherence and disease activity in discharged patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). DESIGN: An un-blinded randomized controlled trial. METHODS: A total of 92 eligible patients were recruited from January 2015-December 2015. Participants were randomly assigned to either the intervention (N = 46) or control group (N = 46). The intervention group received four educational sessions delivered through a telephone across a 12-week intervention. The content of the education mainly included: subject's knowledge about disease; treatment goals; the importance of taking medication correctly; side effect management; remembering to take medication. The control group received only standard care including discharge instructions. Outcome measures included medication adherence and disease activity. RESULTS: The intervention group had significantly higher medication adherence compared with the control group at 12th and 24th week. There was no significant difference between two groups in disease activity at 12th and 24th week. CONCLUSIONS: The telephone-delivered tailored educational intervention effectively improved medication adherence among discharged patients with rheumatoid arthritis. However, no significant benefits of the intervention on disease activity were detected. IMPACT: Good medication adherence in rheumatoid arthritis patients contributes to controlling symptom and inflammation, preventing the progressive structural damage. This study demonstrated that the telehealth educational intervention could improve patients' medication adherence but did not have a direct impact on clinical condition in the short-term. The intervention for discharged patients with rheumatoid arthritis can be integrated into the clinical setting by the nursing staff as follow-up care. RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: It is widely recognized that sarcopenia increases postoperative complications in trauma patients. However, the effects on prognosis remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of sarcopenia on 90-day readmission and overall survival (OS) in abdominal trauma patients. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: 485 consecutive patients who underwent abdominal surgery after trauma in our institution were enrolled. Sarcopenia was diagnosed with low muscle mass and low muscle strength-handgrip. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors that contributed to 90-day readmission and OS. Cox logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between sarcopenia and OS. RESULTS: Sarcopenia was present in 120 of 485 patients (24.7%) with abdominal trauma within one week after admission based on the diagnostic cut-off values (40.9 cm2/m2 for men and 36.8 cm2/m2 for women). 90-day readmission was significantly higher in the sarcopenia group (p=0.019), and OS lower in the sarcopenia group (p=0.025). Sarcopenia was an independent predictor of 90-day readmission [odds ratio (OR): 5.34, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.52-11.3]. CONCLUSIONS: Sarcopenia was associated with high 90-day readmission and low OS in abdominal trauma patients, and it was an independent risk factor for 90-day readmission.

RESUMO

Streptococcus thermophilus is an important bacterium used in the production of fermented dairy products. Yogurt with good flavor is preferred by consumers; thus, variation in flavor-formation characteristics among isolates is attracting attention. Here, acetaldehyde production characteristics of 30 isolates were evaluated in parallel with genotyping and multilocus sequence typing of key functional genes involved in acetaldehyde production. The results showed that isolates could be divided into 3 phenotypically distinct groups: high-acetaldehyde-yielding isolates (>10 mg/L), medium-acetaldehyde-yielding isolates (5-10 mg/L) and low-acetaldehyde-yielding (<5 mg/L) based on evaluation of acetaldehyde production during yogurt storage. These groups, distinguishable by phenotypic characteristics, were clustered in corresponding groups based on functional gene multilocus sequence typing analysis. Combining functional gene sequence analysis of 30 Strep. thermophilus isolates with phenotypic evaluation of their flavor-related characteristics (specifically acetaldehyde production) demonstrated that groups of isolates established using genotype data analysis corresponded with groups identified based on their phenotypic traits. Interestingly, the 30 isolates of Strep. thermophilus showed significant phylogenetic clustering in acetaldehyde content by functional gene and acetaldehyde content analysis. A corresponding relationship exists between functional gene phylogenetic clustering and acetaldehyde content variation.
