RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of maltodextrin addition on the physical stability of powdered green peas. The evaluation of the physical state of the material was based on the equilibrium water content of the monolayer (Xm) and the glass transition temperatures of the powders at room temperature (Tg) and in the frozen state (Tg'). Graphical sorption characteristic at 25°C was determined using static-gravimetric method while capacity of the monolayer values was calculated from the mathematical GAB model. Differential scanning calorimetry was carried out in order to determine glass transition lines and freezing curves which combine together were used to plot state diagrams. Relationship between Tg and solid content were shown by using Gordon-Taylor model. Freezing data were modeled employing the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and its development-Chen model. Sorption isotherms showed sigmoidal shape characteristic for high-molecular weight materials. Monolayer moisture content varied between 0.047 and 0.106 g water/g solids. The glass transition temperature of anhydrous green peas increased in from 89.9 to 175.6°C while Tg' value changed from -43.4 to -26.6°C to as a result of 75% polysaccharide addition. The ultimate maximum-freeze-concentration conditions of the powders were observed in range from 0.783 to 0.814 g solids/g sample. Monolayer capacity, Tg and Tg' values increased with increasing maltodextrin amount in the sample which indicates that the addition of starch hydrolysate has a beneficial effect on the stability of powders stored frozen and at room temperature.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The consumption of olive oil has been shown to have a positive effect on preventing obesity and hypertension. At the same time, it is recommended to avoid processed meat products as they contain saturated fats. The inclusion of highly unsaturated lipids in food products can lead to rapid oxidation and deterioration of sensory characteristics. The objective of the current work was to encapsulate olive oil and incorporate it into traditional Polish liver pâté. The oil-in-water emulsions were formulated with varying levels of oat ß-glucan and were evaluated for droplet size, pH, encapsulation efficiency and rheology. The liver pâtés made using the emulsions with and without ß-glucan were then evaluated for pH, texture, colour, lipid and protein oxidation, thermal stability and sensory properties. RESULTS: The results showed that the oil-in-water emulsions had a 100% encapsulation rate of olive oil after 30 days of storage at 4 °C, regardless of the presence of ß-glucan. Although the texture of the emulsion-enriched liver pâté was different from that of the control, this difference was reduced when ß-glucan was added to the emulsion and then to the pâté matrix. CONCLUSION: Replacing 50% of animal fat with an olive oil emulsion enriched with ß-glucan did not result in any compromise of sensory properties, increase lipid or protein oxidation. These results suggest that it is possible to replace saturated lipids with omega-3-rich olive oil. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Powders based on plant raw materials have low storage stability due to their sorption and thermal properties and generate problems during processing. Therefore, there is a need to find carrier agents to improve their storage life as well as methods to evaluate their properties during storage. Water adsorption isotherms and thermal characteristics of the pumpkin powder with various inulin additions were investigated in order to develop state diagrams. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to obtained glass transition lines, freezing curves and maximal-freeze-concentration conditions. The glass transition lines were developed using the Gordon-Taylor model. Freezing data were modeled employing the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and its development-Chen model. The glass transition temperature of anhydrous material (Tgs) and characteristic glass transition temperature of maximum-freeze-concentration (Tg') increased with growing inulin additions. Sorption isotherms of the powders were determined at 25 °C by the static-gravimetric method and the experimental data was modeled with four different mathematical models. The Peleg model was the most adequate to describe the sorption data of the pumpkin-inulin powders. Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer (GAB) monolayer capacity decreased with increasing inulin concentration in the sample.

RESUMO

We evaluated the association between germline genetic variants located within the 3'-untranlsated region (polymorphic 3'UTR, ie, p3UTR) of candidate genes involved in multiple myeloma (MM). We performed a case-control study within the International Multiple Myeloma rESEarch (IMMEnSE) consortium, consisting of 3056 MM patients and 1960 controls recruited from eight countries. We selected p3UTR of six genes known to act in different pathways relevant in MM pathogenesis, namely KRAS (rs12587 and rs7973623), VEGFA (rs10434), SPP1 (rs1126772), IRF4 (rs12211228) and IL10 (rs3024496). We found that IL10-rs3024496 was associated with increased risk of developing MM and with a worse overall survival of MM patients. The variant allele was assayed in a vector expressing eGFP chimerized with the IL10 3'-UTR and it was found functionally active following transfection in human myeloma cells. In this experiment, the A-allele caused a lower expression of the reporter gene and this was also in agreement with the in vivo expression of mRNA measured in whole blood as reported in the GTEx portal. Overall, these data are suggestive of an effect of the IL10-rs3024496 SNP on the regulation of IL10 mRNA expression and it could have clinical implications for better characterization of MM patients in terms of prognosis.

RESUMO

What cortical inputs are provided to motor control areas while they drive complex learned behaviors? We study this question in the nucleus interface of the nidopallium (NIf), which is required for normal birdsong production and provides the main source of auditory input to HVC, the driver of adult song. In juvenile and adult zebra finches, we find that spikes in NIf projection neurons precede vocalizations by several tens of milliseconds and are insensitive to distortions of auditory feedback. We identify a local isometry between NIf output and vocalizations: quasi-identical notes produced in different syllables are preceded by highly similar NIf spike patterns. NIf multiunit firing during song precedes responses in auditory cortical neurons by about 50 ms, revealing delayed congruence between NIf spiking and a neural representation of auditory feedback. Our findings suggest that NIf codes for imminent acoustic events within vocal performance.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to check whether the number of fulfilled diagnostic criteria of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) had any association with patients' characteristics and pregnancy outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 756 women with single pregnancies and GDM who gave birth at the 2nd Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Medical University of Warsaw between 01.2013-12.2016 were included in a retrospective analysis. Patients were divided into 2 groups: A - 499 patients diagnosed with GDM on the basis of one diagnostic criterion, B - 257 patients diagnosed with GDM on the basis of more than one diagnostic criterion. RESULTS: Patients from group A had lower pre-pregnancy BMI than those from group B (median 24.9 kg/m2 vs. 26.5 kg/m2, p=0.0003). Women from group A were less frequently treated with insulin than women from group B (19.1% vs. 32.7%; p=0.00002). Group A had lower median OGTT levels than group B (85.9 mg/dL vs. 94.1 mg/dL, p=0,0001; 160.2 mg/dL vs. 197.6 mg/dL, p=0.0001; 144.8 mg/dL vs. 167.0 mg/dL,p=0.0001; respectively). Moreover, in group B the average week of labor was earlier than in group A (mean 38,1 and 38,5 weeks of gestation, p=0,0006). CONCLUSIONS: Patients who fulfilled more than one diagnostic criterion for GDM may have worse pregnancy outcome. We think that a number of fulfilled diagnostic criteria for GDM may be an important risk factor for insulin therapy during pregnancy and earlier gestational age at delivery.

RESUMO

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignancy of plasma cells usually infiltrating the bone marrow, associated with the production of a monoclonal immunoglobulin (M protein) which can be detected in the blood and/or urine. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that genetic factors are involved in MM pathogenesis, and several studies have identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with the susceptibility to the disease. SNPs within miRNA-binding sites in target genes (miRSNPs) may alter the strength of miRNA-mRNA interactions, thus deregulating protein expression. MiRSNPs are known to be associated with risk of various types of cancer, but they have never been investigated in MM. We performed an in silico genome-wide search for miRSNPs predicted to alter binding of miRNAs to their target sequences. We selected 12 miRSNPs and tested their association with MM risk. Our study population consisted of 1,832 controls and 2,894 MM cases recruited from seven European countries and Israel in the context of the IMMEnSE (International Multiple Myeloma rESEarch) consortium. In this population two SNPs showed an association with p < 0.05: rs286595 (located in gene MRLP22) and rs14191881 (located in gene TCF19). Results from IMMEnSE were meta-analyzed with data from a previously published genome-wide association study (GWAS). The SNPs rs13409 (located in the 3'UTR of the POU5F1 gene), rs1419881 (TCF19), rs1049633, rs1049623 (both in DDR1) showed significant associations with MM risk. In conclusion, we sought to identify genetic polymorphisms associated with MM risk starting from genome-wide prediction of miRSNPs. For some mirSNPs, we have shown promising associations with MM risk.

RESUMO

Walking is a key motor behaviour of limbed animals, executed by contraction of functionally antagonistic muscle groups during swing and stance phases. Nevertheless, neuronal circuits regulating the activation of antagonistic extensor-flexor muscles remain poorly understood. Here we use monosynaptically restricted trans-synaptic viruses to elucidate premotor anatomical substrates for extensor-flexor control in mice. We observe a medio-lateral spatial segregation between extensor and flexor premotor interneurons in the dorsal spinal cord. These premotor interneuron populations are derived from common progenitor domains, but segregate by timing of neurogenesis. We find that proprioceptive sensory feedback from the periphery is targeted to medial extensor premotor populations and is required for extensor-specific connectivity profiles during development. Our findings provide evidence for a discriminating anatomical basis of antagonistic circuits at the level of premotor interneurons, and point to synaptic input and developmental ontogeny as key factors in the establishment of circuits regulating motor behavioural dichotomy.

RESUMO

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a treatment option with proved effectiveness especially in drug resist depression. It is used in functional brain mapping before neurosurgery operations and diagnostic of corticospinal tract transmission. Many studies are performed to evaluate rTMS using in treatment of obsessive - compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, autism, strokes, tinnitus, Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases, cranial traumas. Moreover rTMS was used in treatment of multiple sclerosis, migraine, dystonia. Electromagnetical field generated by rTMS penetrate skin of the scalp and infiltrate brain tissues to a depth of 2 cm, cause neurons depolarization and generating motor, cognitive and affective effects. Depending on the stimulation frequency rTMS can stimuli or inhibit brain cortex. rTMS mechanism of action remains elusive. Probably it is connected with enhancement of neurotransmitters, modulation of signals transductions pathways in Central Nervous System, gene transcription and release of neuroprotective substances. Studies with use of animals revealed that rTMS stimulation can generate brain changes similar to those seen after electric shock therapy without provoking seizures. The aim of presenting study was to analyze actual researches evaluating rTMS use in treatment of psychiatric and neurological diseases.

RESUMO

Compelling biological and epidemiological evidences point to a key role of genetic variants of the TERT and TERC genes in cancer development. We analyzed the genetic variability of these two gene regions using samples of 2,267 multiple myeloma (MM) cases and 2,796 healthy controls. We found that a TERT variant, rs2242652, is associated with reduced MM susceptibility (OR = 0.81; 95% CI: 0.72-0.92; p = 0.001). In addition we measured the leukocyte telomere length (LTL) in a subgroup of 140 cases who were chemotherapy-free at the time of blood donation and 468 controls, and found that MM patients had longer telomeres compared to controls (OR = 1.19; 95% CI: 0.63-2.24; p(trend) = 0.01 comparing the quartile with the longest LTL versus the shortest LTL). Our data suggest the hypothesis of decreased disease risk by genetic variants that reduce the efficiency of the telomerase complex. This reduced efficiency leads to shorter telomere ends, which in turn may also be a marker of decreased MM risk.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine the relationship between obesity and lipid markers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We divided 66 non-diabetic adult obese patients (mean age: 55.8±11.6 years) into 3 groups according to body mass index (BMI). All patients were measured for waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body adiposity index (BAI), and visceral adiposity index (VAI). Serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides (TG) were determined, and lipid indices TC/HDL, LDL/HDL, and TG/HDL were also estimated. RESULTS: TC and LDL-C in Group III were lower than in Group I (5.0±1.0 vs. 6.0±1.0 mmol/L, and 2.9±0.9 vs. 3.8±1.2 mmol/L; p<0.05 for both). Negative correlations were found between: BMI and TC, LDL, and HDL (r=-0.291; r=-0.310, r=-0.240, respectively); and WC, WHR, VAI, and HDL (r=-0.371, r=-0.296, r=-0.376, respectively). Positive correlations were found between WC, WHR, and TG/HDL (r=0.279, r=0.244, respectively) and between VAI and: TC (r=0.327), TG (r=0.885), TC/HDL (r=0.618), LDL/HDL (r=0.480), and TG/HDL (r=0.927). CONCLUSIONS: Obesity is associated with lipid disturbances, especially with HDL-C reduction, in obese non-diabetic patients. VAI is strongly related to lipid profile and thus may be the most valuable obesity index in obese patients with dyslipidemias.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to estimate associations between inflammatory markers and obesity indices in normo- and hypertensive subjects. METHODS: 65 obese adult subjects were divided into two groups: (A) of hypertensives (n = 54) and (B) of normotensives (n = 11). Waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), visceral adiposity index (VAI), body adiposity index (BAI) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6 and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) serum concentrations were estimated. RESULTS: In group A WHtR was higher (0.69 ± 0.07 vs 0.63 ± 0.06; p < 0.01), hsCRP correlated with BMI and WHtR (r = 0.343; p = 0.011 and r = 0.363; p < 0.01, respectively). BAI correlated with hsCRP in group A and B (r = 0.329; p < 0.05 and r = 0.642; p < 0.05; respectively) and in females and males (r = 0.305; p = 0.05 and r = 0.44; p < 0.05, respectively). In females hsCRP was higher (3.2 ± 2.2 mg/l vs 2.1 ± 1.5 mg/l; p < 0.05). In patients without lipid lowering treatment hsCRP and IL-6 were higher (3.2 ± 1.7 mg/l vs 2.4 ±2.2 mg/l; p = 0.01 and 15.9 ± 7.2 pg/ml vs 13.6 ± 9.9 pg/ml; p < 0.01, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: WHtR is a sensitive index associated with chronic inflammation in obese hypertensive subjects. BAI correlates with hsCRP independently of hypertension and sex. hsCRP is more sensitive marker associated with obesity than IL-6 and TNF-α. Lipid lowering treatment influence chronic inflammation.

RESUMO

Songbirds' vocal mastery is impressive, but to what extent is it a result of practice? Can they, based on experienced mismatch with a known target, plan the necessary changes to recover the target in a practice-free manner without intermittently singing? In adult zebra finches, we drive the pitch of a song syllable away from its stable (baseline) variant acquired from a tutor, then we withdraw reinforcement and subsequently deprive them of singing experience by muting or deafening. In this deprived state, birds do not recover their baseline song. However, they revert their songs toward the target by about 1 standard deviation of their recent practice, provided the sensory feedback during the latter signaled a pitch mismatch with the target. Thus, targeted vocal plasticity does not require immediate sensory experience, showing that zebra finches are capable of goal-directed vocal planning.

RESUMO

Introduction: The objective of this study was to estimate the safety profile of pulmonary hypertension-specific therapies using placebo-controlled and active comparator trials. Material and methods: The search corpus comprised Medline, Scopus, Embase and Clinical Trials databases. A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to assess the relative risk of severe events and discontinuations as well as of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) classified into 26 categories and 21 subcategories defined by the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedRA). Results: Pulmonary hypertension-specific therapies had the greatest effect on such events as flushing and headache as well as jaw pain, limb pain and myalgia or gastrointestinal disorders. The relative risk for ADRs in patients receiving monotherapy (vs. placebo/supportive therapies) and combined regimens (vs. monotherapy) was significantly increased. The risk of cessation for the combined regimen was slightly higher (Qinter-group, p = 0.0778). Such ADRs as blood and lymphatic system disorders with the anemia subgroup, gastrointestinal disorders with diarrhea and nausea subgroups, respiratory and thoracic diseases or nervous system disorders with headache tended to occur more often in combination regimens as compared to monotherapy. Conclusions: About half of the main categories and subcategories of adverse reactions according to MedRA were associated with a relatively high frequency and hazard ratio. Their risk can be increased when combination regimens are used, especially.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to estimate obesity parameters: waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), weight-to-height ratio (WHtR), visceral adiposity index (VAI), body adiposity index (BAI), and serum adipokines (leptin, adiponectin, resistin) and their associations with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), serum creatinine, and microalbuminuria (MA) in patients with early stages of CKD and in non-CKD obese patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 67 non-diabetic obese (BMI ≥ 30 mg/kg(2) out-clinic patients (25 males, 42 females), aged from 36.5 to 64 years were divided into 2 groups: Group A (n=15)--patients with early stages of CKD (eGFR between 30 and 60 ml/min/1.73 m(2) or with MA >20 mg/l in morning urine sample independently from GFR) and Group B--patients without chronic CKD (n=52). RESULTS: In Group A compared to Group B, BAI and leptin were higher (42.2 ± 7.1 vs. 37.5 ± 7.0; p<0.05 and 51.8 ± 26.7 ng/mL vs. 35.3 ± 24.9 ng/mL; p<0.05; respectively) and negative correlations occurred between eGFR and BAI (r=-0.709; p=0.003), leptin (r=-0.68; p=0.005), and resistin (r=-0.528; p<0.05). In Group B, negative correlations occurred between creatinine and VAI (r=-0.332; p<0.05), BAI (r=-0.619; p<0.0001), leptin (r=-0.676; p<0.0001), and adiponectin (r=-0.423; p=0.002), and between eGFR and resistin (r=-0.276; p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: BAI may be a valuable obesity parameter as a predictor of early stages of CKD in patients with obesity. Leptin may be an important pathogenic factor in obese patients with early stages of CKD. Resistin is associated with eGFR in obese patients, independently of CKD.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The appropriate skin hydration level enables its normal function and healthy appearance. PURPOSE: The purpose of present research was to assess the applicability of high frequency ultrasound (HFU) to the monitoring of skin moisturization treatments. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study sample encompassed 27 women, aged 20-67 y.o. (mean age of 45.48 y.o.) with dry skin. All women applied a strong moisturizing cream on their facial skin for 14 days. The course of treatment was monitored using the HFU. The following parameters were subjected to the ultrasound evaluation: epidermal echo thickness, dermis thickness, and separately the thickness of the superior and inferior layer of dermis. The measurements were taken on the participants' chins and cheeks. In addition, skin hydration and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were determined. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were obtained between the echogenicity of the superior layer of the dermis on the chin and cheek. After treatment, the statistically significant values of TEWL decrease and hydration increase were obtained on the cheek skin. No statistically significant differences between the TEWL or hydration levels were found on the chin. No statistically significant differences between the epidermal echo and dermis thickness values for the two measurement points were observed. CONCLUSION: The HFU is a useful method for the monitoring of skin moisturization treatments.

RESUMO

This paper presents the descriptions of two new genera and four new metapseudid species collected from the coral reefs of Ningaloo and Heron Island in north-western and eastern Australia, respectively. Two of the species, Curtipleon chadi n. sp., and Creefs heronum n. gen. n. sp. are members of the subfamily Synapseudinae, one, Msangia mussida n. sp. is a member of the subfamily Msangiinae and one Bamberus jinigudirus n. gen. n. sp. is a member of the subfamily Chondropodinae. With the exception of M mussida that was found on live coral, all of the species were associated with dead corals.

RESUMO

After a long decomposition process, organic matter turns into humic substances. In humus, carbon dioxide (CO2) bound in photosynthesis is brought back to the soil, where it should be used by its ecosystem. This is important because similar relationships are found in modern concretes and concretes designed with the use of geochemical modeling (possibility of the C-S-H phase for storing harmful substances). The aim of the article was to investigate the possibility of using humus (Humus Active-HA) and vermicompost (Biohumus Extra Universal-BEU), i.e., organic matter resulting from a long process of biological decomposition in the production of autoclaved bricks containing only ecological materials, i.e., sand, lime, and water. Tests of compressive strength, density, microstructure based on SEM, XRD, and micro-CT analysis were performed. The results of the research indicate that humus and vermicompost can be successfully used in their production. The paper compares traditional products and products made of raw material mass containing 3%, 7%, and 11% of humus and vermicompost, using the apparatus of mathematical experiment planning. Compressive strength, volumetric density, water absorption, and wicking, porosity, and material microstructure were tested. The best results were obtained for samples with the addition of 7% humus and 3% vermicompost. The compressive strength increased to 42.04 MPa (compared to standard bricks, whose strength is 15-20 MPa), and the bulk density increased by about 55%, to the value of 2.11 kg/dm3, which indicates the densification of the material's microstructure. They were characterized by the highest compressive strength, moderate water absorption, and a high proportion of closed pores in the sample.

RESUMO

In the production of building materials, there has been an increased interest in the use of by-products and industrial waste in recent years. Such modifications make it possible to solve not only technical and economic problems, but also environmental problems. This article describes the use of basalt powder waste in sand-lime products (silicates). The aim of the study was to manage basalt powder waste and to investigate the changes it causes in sand-lime products. The article describes the planning of the experiment, which directly determines the number of samples and their composition, which was necessary to conducting a full analysis and correctly illustrating the relationships occurring in the samples. Basic tests were carried out: compressive strength, density and water absorption, as well as optical tests and scanning microscopy. Based on the research conducted, it was concluded that the use of basalt powder as a component of sand-lime products has positive effects. Studies show that the best results are achieved with a proportion of powder in the raw material mass of about 10%-the compressive strength reaches almost 30 MPa, which is almost twice that of traditional silicate.

RESUMO

Increasing consumer awareness of the impact of nutrition on health and the growing popularity of vegan diets are causing a need to look for new plant-based formulations of standard confectionery products with high energy density and low nutritional value, containing gelatin. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop vegan and sugar-free gummy jellies based on an algae-derived polysaccharide-furcellaran (FUR). Until now, FUR has not been used as a gel-forming agent despite the fact that its structure-forming properties show high potential in the production of vegan confectionery. The basic formulation of gummy jellies included the addition of soy protein isolate and/or inulin. The final product was characterized regarding its rheological, antioxidant, mechanical and physicochemical properties. Eco-friendly packaging for the jellies composed of a three-layer polymer film has also been developed. It was observed that the highest values of textural parameters were obtained in jellies containing the addition of soy protein isolate, whose positive effect was also found on antioxidant activity. Before drying, all furcellaran-based gel systems showed G' and G" values characteristic of strong elastic hydrogels. Storing jellies for a week under refrigeration resulted in an increase in hardness, a decrease in moisture content and reduced water activity values. Overall, our study indicates the high potential of furcellaran both as a gelling agent in confectionery products and as a base polymer for their packaging.
