BACKGROUND: cervical spinal cord injury leads to loss of upper limb functionality, which causes a decrease in autonomy to perform activities of daily living. The use of robotic technologies in rehabilitation could contribute to improving upper limb functionality and treatment quality. This case report aims to describe the potential of robotic hand treatment with Gloreha Sinfonia, in combination with conventional rehabilitation, in a tetraparetic patient. MATERIAL: fifteen rehabilitative sessions were performed. Evaluations were conducted pre-treatment (T0), post-treatment (T1), and at two-months follow-up (T2) based on: the upper-limb range of motion and force assessment, the FMA-UE, the 9-Hole Peg Test (9HPT), and the DASH questionnaire. A virtual reality game-based rating system was used to evaluate the force control and modulation ability. RESULTS: the patient reported greater ability to use hands with less compensation at T1 and T2 assessments. Improvements in clinical scales were reported in both hands at T1, however, at T2 only did the dominant hand show further improvement. Improved grip strength control and modulation ability were reported for T1. However a worsening was found in both hands at T2, significant only for the non-dominant hand. The maximum force exerted increased from T0 to T2 in both hands. CONCLUSION: hand treatment combining physical therapy and Gloreha Sinfonia seems to have benefits in functionality and dexterity in tetraparetic patient in the short term. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings, to verify long-term results, and to identify the most appropriate modalities of robotic rehabilitation.

In this study, a novel wearable system for the identification of compensatory trunk movements (CTMs) in post-stroke hemiplegic patients is presented. The device is composed of seven soft sensing elements (SSEs) based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology. Each SSE consists of a single FBG encapsulated into a flexible matrix to enhance the sensor's robustness and improve its compliance with the human body. The FBG's small size, light weight, multiplexing capability, and biocompatibility make the proposed wearable system suitable for multi-point measurements without any movement restriction. Firstly, its manufacturing process is presented, together with the SSEs' mechanical characterization to strain. Results of the metrological characterization showed a linear response of each SSE in the operating range. Then, the feasibility assessment of the proposed system is described. In particular, the device's capability of detecting CTMs was assessed on 10 healthy volunteers and eight hemiplegic patients while performing three tasks which are representative of typical everyday life actions. The wearable system showed good potential in detecting CTMs. This promising result may foster the use of the proposed device on post-stroke patients, aiming at assessing the proper course of the rehabilitation process both in clinical and domestic settings. Moreover, its use may aid in defining tailored strategies to improve post-stoke patients' motor recovery and quality of life.

Quantitatively assessing personal health status is gaining increasing attention due to the improvement of diagnostic technology and the increasing occurrence of chronic pathologies. Monitoring physiological parameters allows for retrieving a general overview of the personal health status. Respiratory activity can provide relevant information, especially when pathologies affect the muscles and organs involved in breathing. Among many technologies, wearables may represent a valid solution for continuous and remote monitoring of respiratory activity, thus reducing healthcare costs. The most popular wearables used in this arena are based on detecting the breathing-induced movement of the chest wall. Therefore, their use in patients with impaired chest wall motion and abnormal respiratory kinematics can be challenging, but literature is still in its infancy. This study investigates the performance of a custom wearable device for respiratory monitoring in post-stroke patients. We tested the device on six hemiplegic patients under different respiratory regimes. The estimated respiratory parameters (i.e., respiratory frequency and the timing of the respiratory phase) demonstrated good agreement with the ones provided by a gold standard device. The promising results of this pilot study encourage the exploitation of wearables on these patients that may strongly impact the treatment of chronic diseases, such as hemiplegia.

Inappropriate posture and the presence of spinal disorders require specific monitoring systems. In clinical settings, posture evaluation is commonly performed with visual observation, electrogoniometers or motion capture systems (MoCaps). Developing a measurement system that can be easily used also in non-structured environments would be highly beneficial for accurate posture monitoring. This work proposes a system based on three magneto-inertial measurement units (MIMU), placed on the backs of seventeen volunteers on the T3, T12 and S1 vertebrae. The reference system used for validation is a stereophotogrammetric motion capture system. The volunteers performed forward bending and sit-to-stand tests. The measured variables for identifying the posture were the kyphosis and the lordosis angles, as well as the range of movement (ROM) of the body segments. The comparison between MIMU and MoCap provided a maximum RMSE of 5.6° for the kyphosis and the lordosis angles. The average lumbo-pelvic contribution during forward bending (41.8 ± 8.6%) and the average lumbar ROM during sit-to-stand (31.8 ± 9.8° for sitting down, 29.6 ± 7.6° for standing up) obtained with the MIMU system agree with the literature. In conclusion, the MIMU system, which is wearable, inexpensive and easy to set up in non-structured environments, has been demonstrated to be effective in posture evaluation.

The detection of gait abnormalities is essential for professionals involved in the rehabilitation of walking disorders. Instrumented treadmills are spreading as an alternative to overground gait analysis. To date, the use of these instruments for recording kinematic gait parameters is still limited in clinical practice due to the lack of validation studies. This study aims to investigate the performance of a multi-sensor instrumented treadmill (i.e., WalkerViewTM, WV) for performing gait analysis. Seventeen participants performed a single gait test on the WV at three different speeds (i.e., 3 km/h, 5 km/h, and 6.6 km/h). In each trial, spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters were recorded simultaneously by the WV and by a motion capture system used as the reference. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of spatiotemporal parameters showed fair to excellent agreement at the three walking speeds for steps time, cadence, and step length (range 0.502-0.996); weaker levels of agreement were found for stance and swing time at all the tested walking speeds. Bland-Altman analysis of spatiotemporal parameters showed a mean of difference (MOD) maximum value of 0.04 s for swing/stance time and WV underestimation of 2.16 cm for step length. As for kinematic variables, ICC showed fair to excellent agreement (ICC > 0.5) for total range of motion (ROM) of hip at 3 km/h (range 0.579-0.735); weaker levels of ICC were found at 5 km/h and 6.6 km/h (range 0.219-0.447). ICC values of total knee ROM showed poor levels of agreement at all the tested walking speeds. Bland-Altman analysis of hip ROM revealed a higher MOD value at higher speeds up to 3.91°; the MOD values of the knee ROM were always higher than 7.67° with a 60° mean value of ROM. We demonstrated that the WV is a valid tool for analyzing the spatiotemporal parameters of walking and assessing the hip's total ROM. Knee total ROM and all kinematic peak values should be carefully evaluated, having shown lower levels of agreement.

Low back pain (LBP) is one of the musculoskeletal disorders that most affects workers. Among others, one of the working categories which mainly experiences such disease are video terminal workers. As it causes exploitation of the National Health Service and absenteeism in workplaces, LBP constitutes a relevant socio-economic burden. In such a scenario, a prompt detection of wrong seating postures can be useful to prevent the occurrence of this disorder. To date, many tools capable of monitoring the spinal range of motions (ROMs) are marketed, but most of them are unusable in working environments due to their bulkiness, discomfort and invasiveness. In the last decades, fiber optic sensors have made their mark allowing the creation of light and compact wearable systems. In this study, a novel wearable device embedding a Fiber Bragg Grating sensor for the detection of lumbar flexion-extensions (F/E) in seated subjects is proposed. At first, the manufacturing process of the sensing element was shown together with its mechanical characterization, that shows linear response to strain with a high correlation coefficient (R2 > 0.99) and a sensitivity value (Sε) of 0.20 nm∙mε-1. Then, the capability of the wearable device in measuring F/E in the sagittal body plane was experimentally assessed on a small population of volunteers, using a Motion Capture system (MoCap) as gold standard showing good ability of the system to match the lumbar F/E trend in time. Additionally, the lumbar ROMs were evaluated in terms of intervertebral lumbar distances (Δ d L 3 - L 1 ) and angles, exhibiting moderate to good agreement with the MoCap outputs (the maximum Mean Absolute Error obtained is ~16% in detecting Δ d L 3 - L 1 ). The proposed wearable device is the first attempt for the development of FBG-based wearable systems for workers' safety monitoring.

Musculoskeletal disorders are the most common form of occupational ill-health. Neck pain is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal disorders experienced by computer workers. Wrong postural habits and non-compliance of the workstation to ergonomics guidelines are the leading causes of neck pain. These factors may also alter respiratory functions. Health and safety interventions can reduce neck pain and, more generally, the symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders and reduce the consequent economic burden. In this work, a multi-parametric wearable system based on two fiber Bragg grating sensors is proposed for monitoring neck movements and breathing activity of computer workers. The sensing elements were positioned on the neck, in the frontal and sagittal planes, to monitor: (i) flexion-extension and axial rotation repetitions, and (ii) respiratory frequency. In this pilot study, five volunteers were enrolled and performed five repetitions of both flexion-extension and axial rotation, and ten breaths of both quite breathing and tachypnea. Results showed the good performances of the proposed system in monitoring the aforementioned parameters when compared to optical reference systems. The wearable system is able to well-match the trend in time of the neck movements (both flexion-extension and axial rotation) and to estimate mean and breath-by-breath respiratory frequency values with percentage errors ≤6.09% and ≤1.90%, during quiet breathing and tachypnea, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Optoelectronic plethysmography (OEP) is a non-invasive motion capture method to measure chest wall movements and estimate lung volumes. OBJECTIVES: To provide an overview of the clinical findings and research applications of OEP in the assessment of breathing mechanics across populations of healthy and diseased individuals. METHODS: A bibliographic research was performed with the terms "opto-electronic plethysmography," "optoelectronic plethysmography," and "optoelectronic plethysmograph" in 50 digital library and bibliographic search databases resulting in the selection of 170 studies. RESULTS: OEP has been extensively employed in studies looking at chest wall kinematics and volume changes in chest wall compartments in healthy subjects in relation to age, gender, weight, posture, and different physiological conditions. In infants, OEP has been demonstrated to be a tool to assess disease severity and the response to pharmacological interventions. In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients, OEP has been used to test if patients can dynamically hyperinflate or deflate their lungs during exercise. In neuromuscular patients, respiratory muscle strength and chest kinematics have been analyzed. A widespread application of OEP is in tailoring post-operative pulmonary rehabilitation as well as in monitoring volume increases and muscle contributions during exercise. CONCLUSIONS: OEP is an accurate and validated method of measuring lung volumes and chest wall movements. OEP is an appropriate alternative method to monitor and analyze respiratory patterns in children, adults, and patients with respiratory diseases. OEP may be used in the future to contribute to improvements in the therapeutic strategies for respiratory conditions.

The efficacy of standard rehabilitative therapy for improving upper limb functions after stroke is limited; thus, alternative strategies are needed. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) paired with rehabilitation is a promising approach, but the invasiveness of this technique limits its clinical application. Recently, a noninvasive method to stimulate vagus nerve has been developed. The aim of the present study was to explore whether noninvasive VNS combined with robotic rehabilitation can enhance upper limb functionality in chronic stroke. Safety and efficacy of this combination have been assessed within a proof-of-principle, double-blind, semirandomized, sham-controlled trial. Fourteen patients with either ischemic or haemorrhagic chronic stroke were randomized to robot-assisted therapy associated with real or sham VNS, delivered for 10 working days. Efficacy was evaluated by change in upper extremity Fugl-Meyer score. After intervention, there were no adverse events and Fugl-Meyer scores were significantly better in the real group compared to the sham group. Our pilot study confirms that VNS is feasible in stroke patients and can produce a slight clinical improvement in association to robotic rehabilitation. Compared to traditional stimulation, noninvasive VNS seems to be safer and more tolerable. Further studies are needed to confirm the efficacy of this innovative approach.

During the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, a young adult presented symptoms that were reported at first evaluation to be a frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis). The patient's history, clinical manifestations related to the onset of pain, unilateral weakness, and physical examination led to a physiotherapy referral. Subsequent instrumental investigations showed an idiopathic brachial neuritis known as Parsonage-Turner Syndrome (PTS). Contrary to recent descriptions in the literature, the patient did not experience PTS either after COVID-19 vaccination or after COVID-19 virus infection. The proposed multimodal treatment, considering the patient's characteristics, led to a recovery of muscle strength and function of the upper limb, observed even three years after the acute event. The frequency of rehabilitation treatment, the choice of exercises, the dosage, and the methods of execution require further studies in order to define an evidence-based treatment.

Lower limb orthoses are frequently used in children suffering from cerebral palsy (CP) alongside rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) and knee-ankle-foot orthosis (KAFO) in walking, balance maintenance, spasticity, and quality of life improvement during rehabilitation in children affected by CP. The hypothesis was that the use of orthoses could improve the parameters compared to non-use. A systematic review was conducted in the main databases, including English language RCTs published about the use of AFO and KAFO in combination or not with rehabilitation methods in children affected by CP and studies mentioning walking, balance, muscle length, and quality of life as outcomes. From an initial number of 1484 results, a final number of 11 RCTs were included, comprising a total number of 442 participants and showing an overall high risk of bias in 10 studies and some concerns in one study. Six studies investigated the domain of walking, four studies investigated the domain of balance, and two studies investigated how KAFO and AFO orthoses could improve and prevent muscle contractures. Using highly heterogeneous study designs, different kinds of orthoses and different assessment tools were used. Further studies conducted with higher methodological quality are needed to establish whether AFO and KAFO are useful or not in combination with rehabilitation in improving the investigated domains.

The average life expectancy of the Italian population has increased over the last decades, with a consequent increase in the demand for healthcare. Rehabilitation after hip fracture surgery is essential for autonomy, recovery, and reintegration into the social context. The aim of this study was to determine the level of knowledge and adherence to the recent treatment recommendations of the Italian physiotherapists. A web-based survey, composed of 21 items, was conducted and the frequencies and percentages of the responses were analyzed to evaluate if there was an integration and adherence to the recommendations of greater than 70%, with respect to the desired response. A total of 392 responses were collected and analyzed. Recommendations regarding the multidisciplinary approach, early mobilization, and progressive muscle strength training, achieved the desired value in the inpatient setting. Intensive rehabilitation and full weight bearing did not reach the threshold values. The results of this survey show a partial integration of the recommendations for rehabilitation after hip fracture surgery by Italian physiotherapists. Adherence seems to be better in the inpatient setting and with physiotherapists with higher levels of education.

A retrospective cohort study on professional soccer players from the Serie A and LaLiga was conducted to investigate the correlation between SARS-CoV-2 infection and muscle injuries. Players were divided into two groups based on whether they contracted the SARS-CoV-2 infection (C+) or not (C-) during the 2020/2021 season. In the 2019-2020 season, both championships showed a similar number of muscular injuries (MI) between C+ and C- (Serie A: p = 0.194; 95% CI: -0.044 to 0.215, LaLiga p = 0.915; 95% CI: -0.123 to 0.137). In the 2020-2021 season, C+ had a significantly higher number of MI compared to C- in both championships (Serie A: p < 0.05; 95% CI 0.731 to 1.038; LaLiga: p < 0.05; 95% CI: 0.773 to 1.054). Multiple linear regression analysis confirmed that belonging to C+ in the season 2020/2021 was the variable that most strongly influenced the probability of having a muscle injury. Survival analysis revealed a hazard ratio of 3.73 (95% CI 3.018 to 4.628) and of 5.14 (95% CI 3.200 to 8.254) for Serie A and LaLiga respectively. We found an association between SARS-CoV-2 infection and increased risk of muscle injury, emphasizing the importance of carefully considering the infection in the decision-making process for returning to sport. Therefore, SARS-CoV-2 infection should be judged as a real injury requiring specific assessment and training programs.

Due to prolonged incorrect sitting posture, upper body musculoskeletal disorders (UBMDs) are largely widespread among sedentary workers. Monitoring employees' sitting behaviors could be of great help in minimizing UBMDs' occurrence. In addition, being primarily influenced by psycho-physical stress conditions, respiratory rate (RR) would be a further useful parameter to delineate the workers' state of health. Wearable systems have emerged as a viable option for sitting posture and RR monitoring since enable continuous data collecting with no posture disturbances. Nevertheless, the main limits are poor fit, cumbersomeness, and movement restriction resulting in discomfort for the user. In addition, only few wearable solutions can track both these parameters contextually. To address these problems, in this study a flexible wearable system composed of seven modular sensing elements based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology and designed to be worn on the back has been proposed to recognize the most common sitting postures (i.e., kyphotic, upright and lordotic) and estimate RR. The assessment was performed on ten volunteers showing good performances in postures recognition via Naïve Bayes classificator (accuracy >96.9%) and agreement with the benchmark in RR estimation (MAPE ranging between 0.74% and 3.83%, MODs close to zero, and LOAs between 0.76 bpm and 3.63 bpm). The method was then successfully tested on three additional subjects under different breathing conditions. The wearable system could offer great support for a better understanding of the workers' posture attitudes and contribute to gathering RR information to depict an overall picture of the users' state of health.

Physical therapy keeps exploiting more and more the capabilities of the robot of adapting the treatments to patients' needs. This paper aims at presenting a psychophysiological-aware control strategy for upper limb robot-aided orthopedic rehabilitation. The main features are the capability of i) generating point-to-point trajectories inside an adaptable workspace, ii) providing assistance in guiding the patients' limbs in accomplishing the assigned task allowing them to freely move with a certain degree of spatial and temporal autonomy and iii) tuning the control parameters according to the patients' kinematics performance and psychophysiological state. The implemented control strategy is validated in a real clinical setting on eight orthopedic patients undergoing twenty daily robot-aided rehabilitation sessions. The psychophysiological-aware control strategy evidenced a positive impact on the enrolled participants since they are effectively conducted in a calmer condition with respect to the patients who did not receive the psychophysiological adaptation. Moreover, clinical performance indicators suggest that the proposed tailored control strategy improves motor functions.

BACKGROUND: Outcomes after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are strongly influenced by the adequacy of rehabilitation and the consequent functional recovery. The economic impact of rehabilitation it is not negligible. Inpatient rehabilitation can be 5 to 26 times more expensive than the home-based rehabilitation. This topic is extremely relevant as the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of unsupervised rehabilitation in orthopedic surgery. The aim of this review and meta-analysis is to investigate the scientific evidence regarding the comparison between supervised and unsupervised rehabilitation following TKA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following PRISMA guideline, a comprehensive search of PubMed, Cochrane and Scopus databases using combinations of keywords and MeSH descriptors: "total "Knee replacement," "Arthroplasty", "Rehabilitation" was performed from inception to December 2021. All relevant articles were retrieved, and their bibliographies were searched for further relevant references. Only English written randomized controlled trials comparing supervised and unsupervised rehabilitation following TKA were included in this systematic review. The outcomes considered were long-term pain, physical function, knee flexion and extension ROM, 6 minute walking test (6MWT) and timed up and go test (TUG). RESULTS: 11 studies (2.181 patients in total) were included in this systematic review. The long-term pain outcome showed no significant differences (Std. Mean Difference [SMD] = 0.00, 95 % confidence interval [CI] -0.16, 0.017) between the supervised (n = 397) and unsupervised (n = 255). Physical function showed no significant differences among the two groups (mean difference [MD] = 0.84, 95 % CI = -1.82, 3.50). Non-significant differences were also found for knee ROM flexion (mean difference [MD] = -0.46, 95 % CI = -2.95, 2.04) and for knee extension (mean difference [MD] = 0.54, 95 % CI = -0.89, 1.97). At the 52-week follow-up, the unsupervised group showed significant better results in 6MWT (mean difference [MD] = -26.10, 95 % CI = -47.62, -4.59) and in Timed up and go test (mean difference [MD] = 1.33, 95 % CI = 0.50, 2.15). CONCLUSION: This systematic review did not show a significant clinical difference in improving pain, function, and mobility outcomes after TKA between supervised PT and unsupervised PT. Therefore, it would appear that supervised rehabilitation did not had additional benefits compared to unsupervised rehabilitation.

This study aims compare the spatiotemporal and kinematic running parameters obtained by the WalkerView (Tecnobody, Bergamo, Italy) with those recorded by a optoelectronic 3D motion capture system. Seventeen participants were simultaneously recorded by the WalkerView and a motion capture system during running tests on the WalkerView at two different speeds (i.e., 8 km/h and 10 km/h). Per each parameter and speed the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and the mean of the difference (MOD) and limits of agreement (LOAs) indexes obtained from Bland-Altman analysis were used to compare the two systems. ICCs show an excellent agreement for the mean step time and the cadence at both testing speeds (ICC=0.993 at 8 km/h; ICC=0.998 at 10 km/h); a lower agreement was found for all the kinematic variables. Small differences for some spatio-temporal parameters and greater differences for the kinematic variables were found. Therefore, WalkerView could represent a practical, accessible, and less expensive tool for clinicians, researchers, and sports trainers to assess the characteristics spatio-temporal parameters of running in non-laboratory settings.

Emerging evidence suggests that respiratory frequency (fR) is a valid marker of physical effort. This has stimulated interest in developing devices that allow athletes and exercise practitioners to monitor this vital sign. The numerous technical challenges posed by breathing monitoring in sporting scenarios (e.g., motion artifacts) require careful consideration of the variety of sensors potentially suitable for this purpose. Despite being less prone to motion artifacts than other sensors (e.g., strain sensors), microphone sensors have received limited attention so far. This paper proposes the use of a microphone embedded in a facemask for estimating fR from breath sounds during walking and running. fR was estimated in the time domain as the time elapsed between consecutive exhalation events retrieved from breathing sounds every 30 s. Data were collected from ten healthy subjects (both males and females) at rest and during walking (at 3 km/h and 6 km/h) and running (at 9 km/h and 12 km/h) activities. The reference respiratory signal was recorded with an orifice flowmeter. The mean absolute error (MAE), the mean of differences (MOD), and the limits of agreements (LOAs) were computed separately for each condition. Relatively good agreement was found between the proposed system and the reference system, with MAE and MOD values increasing with the increase in exercise intensity and ambient noise up to a maximum of 3.8 bpm (breaths per minute) and -2.0 bpm, respectively, during running at 12 km/h. When considering all the conditions together, we found an MAE of 1.7 bpm and an MOD ± LOAs of -0.24 ± 5.07 bpm. These findings suggest that microphone sensors can be considered among the suitable options for estimating fR during exercise.

Introduction: Robotic therapy allow to propose sessions of controlled and identical exercises, customizing settings, and characteristics on the individual patient. The effectiveness of robotic assisted therapy is still under study and the use of robots in clinical practice is still limited. Moreover, the possibility of treatment at home allows to reduce the economic costs and time to be borne by the patient and the caregiver and is a valid tool during periods of pandemic such as covid. The aim of this study is to assess whether a robotic home-based treatment rehabilitation using the iCONE robotic device has effects on a stroke population, despite the chronic condition of patients involved and the absence of a therapist next to the patient while performing the exercises. Materials and methods: All patients underwent an initial (T0) and final (T1) assessment with the iCONE robotic device and clinical scales. After T0 evaluation, the robot was delivered to the patient's home for 10 days of at-home treatment (5 days a week for 2 weeks). Results: Comparison between T0 and T1 evaluations revealed some significant improvements in robot-evaluated indices such as Independence and Size for the Circle Drawing exercise and Movement Duration for Point-to-Point exercise, but also in the MAS of the elbow. From the analysis of the acceptability questionnaire, a general appreciation of the robot emerged: patients spontaneously asked for the addition of further sessions and to continue therapy. Discussion: Telerehabilitation of patients suffering from a chronic stroke is an area that is still little explored. From our experience, this is one of the first studies to carry out a telerehabilitation with these characteristics. The use of robots can become a method to reduce the rehabilitation health costs, to ensure continuity of care, and to arrive in more distant places or where the availability of resources is limited. Conclusion: From the data obtained, this rehabilitation seems to be promising for this population. Moreover, promoting the recovery of the upper limb, iCONE can improve patient's quality of life. It would be interesting to conduct RCT studies to compare a conventional treatment in structure with a robotic telematics treatment.

Respiratory diseases are common in post-stroke hemiplegic patients and represent a major social problem as they worsen the quality of life and reduce the life span. As a consequence, being able to monitor respiratory parameters such as the respiratory rate (RR) and assess the presence of respiratory asynchronies could be of paramount importance to define hemiplegics' health status. Moreover, RR is a useful parameter to investigate the level of fatigue and distress that these patients undergo during rehabilitation processes. Although motion capture systems and flowmeters are the leading instruments for respiratory pattern evaluation, smart wearable systems are gaining ever more acceptance since they allow continuous monitoring by detecting chest wall breathing displacements, ensuring reduced costs and no need for dedicated spaces. Among other sensing technologies, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have emerged thanks to their high sensitivity to strain, lightness, and multiplexing capability. In this work, a wearable system composed of four flexible dumbbell-shaped sensing modules is proposed for respiratory monitoring in hemiplegic patients. The system is light and easy to wear and can be adapted to any anthropometry thanks to the modular anchoring system. Its feasibility assessment in RR evaluation was performed on seven hemiplegic volunteers in eupnea and tachypnea breathing conditions. In addition, an explorative investigation was conducted to assess the system's ability to detect asynchronies between torso compartments. The good results suggest that this device could be a useful instrument to support clinicians and operators in hemiplegic patients' management.
