OBJECTIVES: We evaluated fetal cardiovascular physiology and mode of cardiac failure in premature miniature piglets on a pumped artificial placenta (AP) circuit. METHODS: Fetal pigs were cannulated via the umbilical vessels and transitioned to an AP circuit composed of a centrifugal pump and neonatal oxygenator and maintained in a fluid-filled biobag. Echocardiographic studies were conducted to measure ventricular function, umbilical blood flow, and fluid status. In utero scans were used as control data. RESULTS: AP fetuses (n = 13; 102±4d gestational age [term 115d]; 616 ± 139 g [g]; survival 46.4 ± 46.8 h) were tachycardic and hypertensive with initially supraphysiologic circuit flows. Increased myocardial wall thickness was observed. Signs of fetal hydrops were present in all piglets. Global longitudinal strain (GLS) measurements increased in the left ventricle (LV) after transition to the circuit. Right ventricle (RV) and LV strain rate decreased early during AP support compared with in utero measurements but recovered toward the end of the experiment. Fetuses supported for >24 h had similar RV GLS to in utero controls and significantly higher GLS compared to piglets surviving only up to 24 h. CONCLUSIONS: Fetuses on a pump-supported AP circuit experienced an increase in afterload, and redistribution of blood flow between the AP and systemic circulations, associated with elevated end-diastolic filling pressures. This resulted in heart failure and hydrops. These preterm fetuses were unable to tolerate the hemodynamic changes associated with connection to the current AP circuit. To better mimic the physiology of the native placenta and preserve normal fetal cardiovascular physiology, further optimization of the circuit will be required.

This study investigates the immobilization of cellulase on zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) by physical adsorption, specifically the ZIF-8-NH2 and Fe3O4@ZIF-8-NH2, to enhance enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency. The immobilization process was thoroughly analyzed, including optimization of conditions and characterization of ZIF carriers and immobilized enzymes. The impacts on the catalytic activity of cellulase under various temperatures, pH levels, and storage conditions were examined. Additionally, the reusability of the immobilized enzyme was assessed. Results showed the cellulase immobilized on Fe3O4@ZIF-8-NH2 exhibited a high loading capacity of 339.64 mg/g, surpassing previous studies. Its relative enzymatic activity was found to be 71.39%. Additionally, this immobilized enzyme system demonstrates robust reusability, retaining 68.42% of its initial activity even after 10 cycles. These findings underscore the potential of Fe3O4@ZIF-8-NH2 as a highly efficient platform for cellulase immobilization, with promising implications for lignocellulosic biorefinery.

Late gestational supine positioning reduces maternal cardiac output due to inferior vena caval (IVC) compression, despite increased collateral venous return. However, little is known about the impact of maternal position on oxygen (O2 ) delivery and consumption of the gravid uterus, fetus, placenta and lower limbs. We studied the effects of maternal positioning on these parameters in 20 healthy pregnant subjects at 36 ± 2 weeks using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); a follow-up MRI was performed 6-months postpartum (n = 16/20). MRI techniques included phase-contrast and T1/T2 relaxometry for blood flow and oximetry imaging, respectively. O2 transport was measured in the following vessels (bilateral where appropriate): maternal abdominal descending aorta (DAoabdo ), IVC, ovarian, paraspinal veins (PSV), uterine artery (UtA) and external iliacs, and umbilical. Maternal cardiac output was measured by summing DAothoracic and superior vena cava flows. Supine mothers (n = 6) had lower cardiac output and O2 delivery in the DAoabdo , UtA and external iliac arteries, and higher PSV flow than those in either the left (n = 8) or right (n = 6) lateral positions during MRI. However, O2 consumption in the gravid uterus, fetus, placenta and lower limbs was unaffected by maternal positioning. The ratio of IVC/PSV flow decreased in supine mothers while ovarian venous flow and O2 saturation were unaltered, suggesting a major route of pelvic venous return unaffected by maternal position. Placental-fetal O2 transport and consumption were similar between left and right lateral maternal positions. In comparison to non-pregnant findings, DAoabdo and UtA O2 delivery and pelvic O2 consumption increased, while lower-limb consumption remained constant , despite reduced external iliac artery O2 delivery in late gestation. KEY POINTS: Though sleeping supine during the third trimester is associated with an increased risk of antepartum stillbirth, the underlying biological mechanisms are not fully understood. Maternal cardiac output and uteroplacental flow are reduced in supine mothers due to inferior vena caval compression from the weight of the gravid uterus. This MRI study provides a comprehensive circulatory assessment, demonstrating reduced maternal cardiac output and O2 delivery (uteroplacental, lower body) in supine compared to lateral positioning; however, O2 consumption (gravid uterus, fetus, placenta, lower limbs) was preserved. Unlike other mammalian species, the ovarian veins conduct substantial venous return from the human pregnant uterus that is unaffected by maternal positioning. Lumbar paraspinal venous flow increased in supine mothers. These observations may have important considerations during major pelvic surgery in pregnancy (i.e. placenta percreta). Future studies should address the importance of maternal positioning as a potential tool to deliver improved perinatal outcomes in pregnancies with compromised uteroplacental O2 delivery.

Corynoline has been reported to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects. In the present study, the potential protective effects of corynoline against zearalenone (ZEA)-induced liver injury were investigated. ZEA was administered daily for 5 days. Then, liver tissues were used for subsequent experiments. Corynoline attenuated liver histopathological changes induced by ZEA. The production of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1ß in liver tissues, as well as aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase in serum, was also inhibited by corynoline. Meanwhile, ZEA-induced MPO activity and MDA content were both attenuated by corynoline. ZEA-induced NF-κB p65 and IκBα phosphorylation were inhibited by corynoline. Furthermore, SIRT1, Nrf2, and HO-1 expression were increased by corynoline. In addition, the protective effects of corynoline against liver injury were reversed by the SIRT1 inhibitor EX-527. Taken together, corynoline protected against ZEA-induced liver injury by activating the SIRT1/Nrf2 signaling pathway.

Advances in cardiac surgical techniques taking place over the past 50 years have resulted in the vast majority of children born with congenital cardiac malformations now surviving into adulthood. As the focus shifts from survival to the functional outcomes of our patients, it is increasingly being recognized that a significant proportion of patients undergoing infant cardiac repair experience adverse neurodevelopmental (ND) outcomes. The etiology of abnormal brain development in the setting of congenital heart disease is poorly understood, complex, and likely multifactorial. Furthermore, the efficacy of therapies available for the learning disabilities, attention deficit, and hyperactivity disorders and other ND deficits complicating congenital heart disease is currently uncertain. This situation presents a challenge for prenatal counseling as current antenatal testing does not usually provide prognostic information regarding the likely ND trajectories of individual patients. However, we believe it is important for parents to be informed about potential issues with child development when a new diagnosis of congenital heart disease is disclosed. Parents deserve a comprehensive and thoughtful approach to this subject, which conveys the uncertainties involved in predicting the severity of any developmental disorders encountered, while emphasizing the improvements in outcomes that have already been achieved in infants with congenital heart disease. A balanced approach to counseling should also discuss what local arrangements are in place for ND follow-up. This review presents an up-to-date overview of ND outcomes in patients with congenital heart disease, providing possible approaches to communicating this information to parents during prenatal counseling in a sensitive and accurate manner.

In this work, the effect of activated carbon particles on the production of xylonic acid from xylose by Gluconobacter oxydans in a stirred tank bioreactor was investigated. The enhancement of the oxygen transfer coefficient by activated carbon particles was experimentally evaluated under different solids volume fractions, agitation and aeration rates conditions. The experimental conditions optimized by response surface methodology (agitation speed 800 rpm, aeration rate 7 L min-1, and activated carbon 0.002%) showed a maximum oxygen transfer coefficient of 520.7 h-1, 40.4% higher than the control runs without activated carbon particles. Under the maximum oxygen transfer coefficient condition, the xylonic acid titer reached 108.2 g/L with a volumetric productivity of 13.53 g L-1 h-1 and a specific productivity of 6.52 g/gx/h. In conclusion, the addition of activated carbon particles effectively enhanced the oxygen mass transfer rate. These results demonstrate that activated carbon particles enhanced cultivation for xylonic acid production an inexpensive and attractive alternative.

In this study, the synthesis of xylonic acid from xylose by Gluconobacter oxydans NL71 has been investigated. According to the relationship between oxygen transfer rate and oxygen uptake rate, three different kinetic models of product formation were established and the nonlinear fitting was carried out. The results showed that G. oxydans has critical dissolved oxygen under different strain concentrations, and the relationship between respiration intensity and dissolved oxygen conformed to the Monod equation [Formula: see text]. The maximum reaction rate per unit cell mass and the theoretical maximum specific productivity of G. oxydans obtained by the kinetic model are 0.042 mol/L/h and 6.97 g/gx/h, respectively. These results will assist in determining the best balance between the airflow rate and cell concentration in the reaction and improve the production efficiency of xylonic acid.

Groundwater is susceptible to arsenic contamination by sediment with high arsenic content, which is the primary culprit of regional arsenic pollution and poisoning. To explore the influence of the change in hydrodynamic conditions caused by changes in the sedimentary environment over time on arsenic content in sediments during the Quaternary, the hydrodynamic characteristics and arsenic content enrichment of borehole sediments were studied in typical high-arsenic groundwater areas of the Jianghan-Dongting Basin, China. The regional hydrodynamic conditions represented by each borehole location were analyzed, the correlation between the variation in groundwater dynamics characteristics and arsenic content in different hydrodynamic periods was analyzed, and the relationship between arsenic content and grain size distribution was quantitatively investigated using grain size parameter calculation, elemental analysis, and statistical estimates of arsenic content in borehole sediments. We observed that the relationship between arsenic content and hydrodynamic conditions differed between sedimentary periods. Furthermore, arsenic content in the sediments from the borehole at Xinfei Village was significantly and positively correlated with a grain size of 127.0-240.0 µm. For the borehole at Wuai Village, arsenic content was significantly and positively correlated with a grain size of 1.38-9.82 µm size (at 0.05 level of significance). However, arsenic content was inversely correlated with grain sizes of 110.99-716.87 and 133.75-282.07 µm at p values of 0.05 and 0.01, respectively. For the borehole at Fuxing Water Works, arsenic content was significantly and positively correlated with a grain size of 409.6-655.0 µm size (at 0.05 level of significance). Arsenic tended to be enriched in transitional and turbidity facies sediments with normal corresponding hydrodynamic strength but poor sorting. Furthermore, continuous and stable sedimentary sequences were conducive to arsenic enrichment. Fine-grain sediments provided abundant potential adsorption sites for high-arsenic sediments, but finer particle size was not correlated with higher arsenic levels.

OBJECTIVE: Dysbiosis of the intestinal fungal community has been observed in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); however, its potential role in IBD development and prevention remains unclear. Here, we explored the biological effects and molecular mechanisms of intestinal fungi isolated from human faeces on colitis in mice. DESIGN: Intestinal fungal strains with differential abundance in IBD were cultivated in human faeces and their effects on various mouse models of experimental colitis were evaluated. In addition, the bioactive metabolites secreted by the target fungus were accurately identified and their pharmacological effects and potential molecular targets were investigated in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS: The abundance of Candida spp was significantly higher in patients with IBD. After large-scale human intestinal fungal cultivation and functional analysis, Candida metapsilosis M2006B significantly attenuated various models of experimental colitis in wild-type, antibiotic-treated, germ-free, and IL10-/- mice by activating farnesoid X receptor (FXR). Among the seven acyclic sesquiterpenoids (F1-F7) identified as major secondary metabolites of M2006B, F4 and F5 attenuated colitis in mice by acting as novel FXR agonists. The therapeutic effects of M2006B and its metabolites on colitis via specific FXR activation were confirmed in Fxr -/- mice. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that C. metapsilosis M2006B significantly attenuated colitis in mice and identified two acyclic sesquiterpenoids (F4 and F5) as major active metabolites of M2006B. Notably, these metabolites were able to effectively treat experimental colitis by selectively activating FXR. Together, this study demonstrates that M2006B could be a beneficial intestinal fungus for treating and preventing IBD.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of fetal haemodynamics on surgical and neurodevelopmental outcomes in severe Ebstein anomaly and tricuspid valve dysplasia. METHODS: Thirty-four fetuses with Ebstein anomaly/tricuspid valve dysplasia were referred from 2013 to 2019 for fetal echocardiography and clinical management. Nineteen fetuses with Ebstein anomaly/tricuspid valve dysplasia and 30 controls underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance to quantify the fetal blood flow and to calculate cerebral oxygen delivery (cDO2) and consumption (cVO2). The 3D steady-state free precession acquisition was used to measure fetal brain volume. Surgical outcome, brain MRI, and neurodevelopmental follow-up were reviewed. RESULTS: Twenty-six fetuses were live born (76%) and survival (65%) at a mean follow-up of 4 years. Nine fetuses had a brain MRI before discharge, and all had clinically silent injuries and volume loss. At 18 months, five single-ventricle patients had a neurodevelopmental delay in cognition and language (mean percentile: 11th), with gross-motor skills more affected than fine-motor skills (mean percentiles: 4th and 34th). Fetuses with Ebstein anomaly/tricuspid valve dysplasia had smaller brains, lower combined ventricular output, ascending aorta, superior caval vien and umbilical vein flows, lower oxygen saturation in ascending aorta and superior caval vien, lower cDO2 and cVO2 (p < 0.05). Superior caval vien/combined ventricular output and descending aorta/combined ventricular output ratios were lower in fetuses with circular shunt (p < 0.05). Fetuses requiring the Starnes procedure tended to have smaller brains, lower combined ventricular output, superior caval vien, descending aorta, and umbilical vein flows. CONCLUSIONS: All patients with Ebstein anomaly/tricuspid valve dysplasia are at high risk of neurodevelopmental delay and warrant follow-up. Fetal cardiovascular magnetic resonance revealed impaired brain growth with diminished cerebral blood flow and cDO2, the extenting dependent on the severity of the haemodynamic compromise.

We present a novel approach based on dual-sideband heterodyne phase-sensitive detection of dispersion spectroscopy to realize simultaneous measurement of the gas absorption signal and corresponding path length. The details of heterodyne phase-sensitive detection of dispersion spectroscopy are derived. A standard Mach-Zehnder intensity modulator (MZM) is adopted to generate a spectrum of a carrier and two sidebands. Phase shift of the beatnote signal generated by the two sidebands is detected to retrieve the path length as well as the gas absorption signal. The measurement range of the path length can be adapted by changing the modulation frequency. Proof-of-principle experiments are conducted with methane (CH4) as the absorber which is filled into a gas cell with a variable path length. We also utilize this approach to evaluate the path length of a White cell and meanwhile calibrate the experimental system with different concentrations of methane. The proposed method has a great potential for detecting the path length and gas absorption in multipass cells and the open path environment.

BACKGROUND: Phase contrast MRI in the great vessels is a potential clinical tool for managing fetal pathologies. One challenge is the uncontrollable fetal motion, potentially corrupting flow quantifications. PURPOSE: To demonstrate improvements in fetal blood flow quantification in great vessels using retrospectively motion-corrected golden-angle radial phase contrast MRI relative to Cartesian phase contrast MRI. STUDY TYPE: Method comparison. PHANTOM/SUBJECTS: Computer simulation. Seventeen pregnant volunteers. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 1.5T and 3T. Cartesian and golden-angle radial phase contrast MRI. ASSESSMENT: Through computer simulations, radial (with and without retrospective motion correction) and Cartesian phase contrast MRI were compared using flow deviations. in vivo Cartesian and radial phase contrast MRI measurements and reconstruction qualities were compared in pregnancies. Cartesian data were reconstructed into gated reconstructions (CINEs) after cardiac gating with metric optimized gating (MOG). For radial data, real-time reconstructions were performed for motion correction and MOG followed by CINE reconstructions. STATISTICAL TESTS: Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Linear regression. Bland-Altman plots. Student's t-test. RESULTS: Simulations showed significant improvements (P < 0.05) in flow accuracy and reconstruction quality with motion correction ([mean/peak] flow errors with ±5 mm motion corruption: Cartesian [35 ± 1/115 ± 7] mL/s, motion uncorrected radial [25 ± 1/75 ± 2] mL/s and motion-corrected radial [1.0 ± 0.5/-5 ± 1] mL/s). in vivo Cartesian reconstructions without motion correction had lower quality than the motion-corrected radial reconstructions (P < 0.05). Across all fetal mean flow measurements, the bias [limits of agreement] between the two measurements were -0.2 [-76, 75] mL/min/kg, while the linear regression coefficients were (Mradial = 0.81 × MCartesian + 29.8 [mL/min/kg], r2 = 0.67). The corresponding measures for the peak fetal flows were -23 [-214, 167] mL/min/kg and (Pradial = 0.95 × PCartesian -1.2 [mL/min/kg], r2 = 0.80). Cartesian reconstructions of low quality showed significantly higher estimated mean and peak (P < 0.05) flows than the corresponding radial reconstructions. DATA CONCLUSION: Simulations showed that radial phase contrast MRI with motion compensation improved flow accuracy. For fetal measurements, motion-corrected radial reconstructions showed better image quality than, and different flow values from, Cartesian reconstructions. Level of Evidence 1. We reformulate the coordinate transformation method (C method) for gratings with a vertical facet or overhanging profile (overhanging gratings), in which no tensor concept is involved, only the knowledge of elementary mathematics and Maxwell's equations in the rectangular coordinate system is used, and we provide a detailed recipe for programming. This formulation is easy to understand and implement. It adopts the strategy of a rotating coordinate system from Plumey et al. [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A14, 610 (1997)JOAOD60740-323210.1364/JOSAA.14.000610] and expresses it with the method of changing variables from Li et al. [Appl. Opt.38, 304 (1999)APOPAI0003-693510.1364/AO.38.000304]. We investigate several typical overhanging gratings by the reformulated C method, and we validate and compare the results with the Fourier modal method, which shows that it is superior, especially for metal deep smooth gratings. This reformulation can facilitate the research in light couplers for optical engineers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic is spreading all over the world. With the number of cases increasing rapidly, the epidemiological data on the nutritional practice is scarce. In this study, we aim to describe the clinical characteristics and nutritional practice in a cohort of critically ill COVID-19 patients. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: This is a multicenter, ambidirectional cohort study conducted at 11 hospitals in Hubei Province, China. All eligible critical COVID-19 patients in the study hospital intensive care units at 00:00, March 6th, 2020, were included. Data collection was performed via written case report forms. RESULTS: A total of 44 patients were identified and enrolled, of whom eight died during the 28-day outcome follow- up period. The median interval between hospital admission and the study day was 24 (interquartile range, 13- 26) days and 52.2% (23 of 44) of patients were on invasive mechanical ventilation. The median nutrition risk in critically ill (mNUTRIC) score was 3 (interquartile range, 2-5) on the study day. During the enrolment day, 68.2% (30 of 44) of patients received enteral nutrition (EN), while 6.8% (3 of 44) received parenteral nutrition (PN) alone. Nausea and aspiration were uncommon, with a prevalence of 11.4% (5 of 44) and 6.8% (3 of 44), respectively. As for energy delivery, 69.7% (23 of 33) of patients receiving EN and/or PN were achieving their prescribed targets. CONCLUSIONS: The study showed that EN was frequently applied in critical COVID-19 patients. Energy delivery may be suboptimal in this study requiring more attention.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an acute intestinal condition accounting for severe mortality and morbidity in preterm infants. This study aimed to identify the possible roles of let-7d-5p in neonatal rats with NEC. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to NEC were initially screened in silico. After establishment of NEC rat models, measurement of the expression of let-7d-5p, galectin-3 (LGALS3), Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) as well as proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6) was conducted. The interaction between let-7d-5p and LGALS3 or argonaute-2 (AGO2) was identified. Gain- and loss-of-function approaches were then performed in an attempt to investigate the regulatory roles of let-7d-5p and LGALS3 in inflammation and cell apoptosis in NEC neonatal rats. Let-7d-5p was poorly expressed, whereas LGALS3, TLR4, and NF-κB were highly expressed, in the intestinal tissues of NEC rats. Overexpression of let-7d-5p resulted in decreased levels of proinflammatory factors in the intestinal tissues of NEC rats. Through sequential experimentation, let-7d-5p was identified to target LGALS3 and bind to AGO2. In addition, LGALS3 silencing or LPS treatment blocked the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, thereby suppressing intestinal epithelial cell apoptosis and inflammation in NEC. Collectively, let-7d-5p might exercise its inhibitory properties in the inflammatory response and intestinal epithelial cell apoptosis in NEC neonatal rats via inactivation of the LGALS3-dependent TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway.

KEY POINTS: Human fetal Doppler ultrasound and invasive blood gas measurements obtained by cordocentesis or at the time of delivery reveal similarities with sheep (an extensively used model for human fetal cardiovascular physiology). Oxygen saturation (SO2 ) measurements in human fetuses have been limited to the umbilical and scalp vessels, providing little information about normal regional SO2 differences in the fetus. Blood T2 MRI relaxometry presents a non-invasive measure of SO2 in the major fetal vessels. This study presents the first in vivo validation of fetal vessel T2 oximetry against the in vitro T2-SO2 relationship using catheterized sheep fetuses and compares the normal SO2 in the major vessels between the human and sheep fetal circulations. Human fetal vessel SO2 by T2 MRI confirms many similarities with the sheep fetal circulation and is able to demonstrate regional differences in SO2 ; in particular the significantly higher SO2 in the left versus right heart. ABSTRACT: Blood T2 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) relaxometry non-invasively measures oxygen saturation (SO2 ) in major vessels but has not been validated in fetuses in vivo. We compared the blood T2-SO2 relationship in vitro (tubes) and in vivo (vessels) in sheep, and measured SO2 across the normal human and sheep fetal circulations by T2. Singleton pregnant ewes underwent surgery to implant vascular catheters. In vitro and in vivo sheep blood T2 measurements were related to corresponding SO2 measured using a blood gas analyser, as well as relating T2 and SO2 of human fetal blood in vitro. MRI oximetry was performed in the major vessels of 30 human fetuses at 36 weeks (term, 40 weeks) and 10 fetal sheep (125 days; term, 150 days). The fidelity of in vivo fetal T2 oximetry was confirmed through comparison of in vitro and in vivo sheep blood T2-SO2 relationships (P = 0.1). SO2 was similar between human and sheep fetuses, as was the fetal oxygen extraction fraction (human, 33 ± 11%; sheep, 34 ± 7%; P = 0.798). The presence of streaming in the human fetal circulation was demonstrated by the SO2 gradient between the ascending aorta (68 ± 10%) and the main pulmonary artery (49 ± 9%; P < 0.001). Human and sheep fetal vessel MRI oximetry based on T2 is a validated approach that confirms the presence of streaming of umbilical venous blood towards the heart and brain. Streaming is important in ensuring oxygen delivery to these organs and its disruption may have important implications for organ development, especially in conditions such as congenital heart disease and fetal growth restriction.

Hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) represents one of the leading causes of neonatal mortality and permanent neurological disability worldwide. Compelling studies have identified implication of microRNAs (miRNAs) in HIBD. However, the molecular mechanism of miR-21 underlying the disease pathogenesis is unknown. The present study aims to explore the role of miR-21 in neonatal rats with HIBD. HIBD rat models were developed by carotid artery ligation and hypoxia treatment, and in vitro cell models were induced by oxygen-glucose deprivation. Through RT-qPCR and western blot analysis, high expression of CCL3 and poor expression of miR-21 were detected in brain tissues of rats with HIBD. Results of dual-luciferase reporter gene assay demonstrated that miR-21 could target and downregulate CCL3. The effect of miR-21 on the neurobehavioral ability of rats, the pathological characteristics of brain tissues, neuron apoptosis and as well as its impact on the NF-κB signaling pathway-related factors was examined by gain- and loss-of-function experiments. The obtained data suggested that upregulation of miR-21 resulted in significantly reduced cerebral infarct volume and degree of brain tissue damage, and improved neurobehavioral ability and memory ability in rats with HIBD through downregulation of CCL3. Besides, overexpression of miR-21 downregulated CCL3 to repress IKKα/ß and p65 phosphorylation both in vivo and in vitro, hence disrupting the NF-κB signaling pathway. Taken together, the key findings of the current study underlie the cerebral protective effect of miR-21 against HIBD in neonatal rats through the inhibition of CCL3.

A sensitive acetylene (C2H2) sensing system based on a novel triple-row circular multi-pass cell (CMPC) was demonstrated. This CMPC has an effective optical length of 21.9 m within an extremely small volume of 100.1 mL. We utilized wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) for absorption spectroscopy detection of C2H2. The distance between the two minima of the second harmonic was used to normalize the maximum value of it, which makes the time to obtain stable output for continuous detection shorten dramatically. A fiber-coupled distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser emitting at 1.5316 µm was employed as a light source. An Allan deviation analysis yielded a detection sensitivity of 76.75 ppb with a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 8.8 × 10-10 cm-1 Hz-1/2 during an average time of 340 s. With a fast stable time, reduced size and high detection sensitivity, the proposed sensing system is suitable for trace gas sensing in a weight-limited unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and an exhalation diagnosis for smoking test.

In the last decade, technological advances have enabled the acquisition of high spatial and temporal resolution cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the fetus. Fetal cardiac MRI has emerged as an alternative to ultrasound, which may be helpful to confirm a diagnosis of congenital heart disease when ultrasound assessment is hampered, for example in late gestation or in the setting of oligohydramnios. MRI also provides unique physiologic information, including vessel blood flow, oxygen saturation and hematocrit, which may be helpful to investigate cardiac and placental diseases. Over recent years, technical developments resulting in the feasibility of fetal cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) have provided a new diagnostic tool for studying the human fetal heart and circulation. During the same period, we have witnessed the arrival of several minimally invasive fetal cardiac interventions (FCI) as a possible form of treatment in selected congenital heart diseases (CHDs). The role of fetal CMR in the planning and monitoring of FCI is not yet clear. Indeed, high-quality fetal CMR is not available or routinely offered at most centers caring for patients with prenatally detected CHD. However, in theory, fetal CMR could have much to offer in the setting of FCI by providing complementary anatomic and physiologic information relating to the specific intervention under consideration. Similarly, fetal CMR may be useful as an alternative imaging modality when ultrasound is hampered by technical limitations, for example, in the setting of oligohydramnios and in late gestation. In this review, we summarize current experience of the use of fetal CMR in the diagnosis and monitoring of fetuses with cardiopathies in the setting of a range of invasive in utero cardiac and vascular interventions and medical treatments and speculate about future directions for this versatile imaging medium.
