RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The superiority between remimazolam and propofol for anesthesia is controversial in elderly patients (≥60 years). This meta-analysis aimed to systematically compare anesthetic effect and safety profile between remimazolam and propofol in elderly patients under any surgery. METHODS: Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and PubMed were searched until December 25, 2023 for relevant randomized controlled trials. RESULTS: Ten studies with 806 patients receiving remimazolam (experimental group) and 813 patients receiving propofol (control group) were included. Time to loss of consciousness [standard mean difference (SMD) (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.347 (-0.362, 3.055), p = 0.122] and recovery time [SMD (95% CI): -0.022 (-0.300, 0.257), p = 0.879] were similar between experimental and control groups. Mean arterial pressure at baseline minus 1 min after induction [SMD (95% CI): -1.800 (-3.250, -0.349), p = 0.015], heart rate at baseline minus 1 min after induction [SMD (95% CI): -1.041 (-1.537, -0.545), p < 0.001], incidences of hypoxemia [relative risk (RR) (95% CI): 0.247 (0.138, 0.444), p < 0.001], respiratory depression [RR (95% CI): 0.458 (0.300, 0.700), p < 0.001], bradycardia [RR (95% CI): 0.409 (0.176, 0.954), p = 0.043], hypotension [RR (95% CI): 0.415 (0.241, 0.714), p = 0.007], and injection pain [RR (95% CI): 0.172 (0.113, 0.263), p < 0.001] were lower in the experimental group compared to the control group. Postoperative nausea and vomiting was not different between groups [RR (95% CI): 1.194 (0.829, 1.718), p = 0.341]. Moreover, this meta-analysis displayed a low risk of bias, minimal publication bias, and good robustness. CONCLUSION: Remimazolam shows comparative anesthetic effect and better safety profile than propofol in elderly patients under any surgery.

RESUMO

Australia prohibits the sale of nicotine-vaping products unless prescribed by medical practitioners. Significant policy reforms were announced on the 28th of November 2023 including a ban on single-use disposable vapes with and without nicotine, and the removal of the personal importation scheme. Despite stringent regulations, loopholes exist such that e-cigarette vendors are getting around it, and online markets provide a route to do so. We discuss strategies used by vendors to covertly market e-cigarettes online through social media. In this perspective, we highlight three proposed policies to strengthen social media regulations that may be feasible to implement. Our proposed strategies to regulate e-cigarette product listings on social media involve implementing robust age verification measures, enhancing the system for flagging and reporting prohibited content, and developing a more effective system to identify and flag content related to e-cigarettes.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The rising popularity of TikTok among adolescents may influence their awareness and perceptions of e-cigarette use via user-generated content. This study aimed to examine how e-cigarette/vaping-related videos are portrayed on TikTok. METHODS: The nine most viewed hashtag based keywords were used to identify popular e-cigarette/vaping-related videos on TikTok (n=1000) from its inception (earliest upload date: January 2019) to November 2020. Five researchers independently coded the number of views, likes, user category and theme. RESULTS: A final sample of 808 e-cigarette/vaping-related videos that met study criteria were included. Collectively, these videos were viewed over 1.5 billion times, with a median view count of 1 000 000 (range 112 900-78 600 000) and a median 'likes' count of 143 000 (range 10 000-1 000 000). A majority of the videos portrayed e-cigarette use positively (63%; collectively viewed over 1.1 billion times). Neutral depictions of e-cigarette use were viewed a total of 290 million times (24%) and negative depictions of e-cigarettes were viewed a total of 193 million times (13%). The video themes included (not mutually exclusively): 'comedy and joke' (52%; total of 618 million views), 'lifestyle and acceptability' (35%; 459 million), 'marketing' (29%; 392 million), 'vaping tricks' (20%; 487 million), 'nicotine and addiction' (20%; 194 million), 'creativity' (16%; 322 million) and 'warning' (11%; 131 million). CONCLUSION: Our findings illustrated that positively framed e-cigarette and vaping-related postings available without age restrictions on TikTok-a rising video-sharing platform that is popular among adolescents-have been viewed many times. Effective age restrictions are needed to reduce adolescents' potential exposure to videos that portray vaping positively.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Smoking remains prevalent in many countries despite rigorous tobacco control strategies. The use of Swedish snus, a type of low-nitrosamine smokeless tobacco, has been promoted as a tobacco harm reduction strategy. DATA SOURCES AND STUDY SELECTION: Three databases were searched for studies that assessed the effectiveness of snus in promoting smoking abstinence. A total of 28 studies were reviewed (5 randomised controlled trials (RCTs), 7 longitudinal and 16 cross-sectional studies). DATA EXTRACTION: Separate meta-analyses were conducted by study type, pooling effect estimates where outcome measures and design were sufficiently comparable. Study details and quality assessment (Risk of Bias 2 for RCTs, Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for observational studies) are provided for each study. DATA SYNTHESIS: While the meta-analysis of RCTs did not show a significant association between snus use and smoking cessation (risk ratio (RR)=1.33, 95% CI 0.71 to 2.47 and RR=0.62, 95% CI 0.27 to 1.41), the results of the meta-analysis of longitudinal cohort studies (RR=1.38, 95% CI 1.05 to 1.82, p=0.022) and cross-sectional studies (OR=1.87, 95% CI 1.29 to 2.72, p=0.001) indicated that use of snus was associated with an increased likelihood of quitting or having quit smoking. There was significant heterogeneity in the cross-sectional studies, and leave-one-out analysis indicated that the longitudinal cohort results were driven by one study. Most studies examined were subject to an elevated risk of bias. CONCLUSION: There is weak evidence for the use of snus for smoking cessation. Better RCTs and longitudinal studies are needed; meanwhile, existing cessation aids may be better placed than snus to promote abstinence.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and synthesise the findings of modelling studies on the population impacts of e-cigarette use and to identify potential gaps requiring future investigation. DATA SOURCE AND STUDY SELECTION: Four databases were searched for modelling studies of e-cigarette use on population health published between 2010 and 2023. A total of 32 studies were included. DATA EXTRACTION: Data on study characteristics, model attributes and estimates of population impacts including health outcomes and smoking prevalence were extracted from each article. The findings were synthesised narratively. DATA SYNTHESIS: The introduction of e-cigarettes was predicted to lead to decreased smoking-related mortality, increased quality-adjusted life-years and reduced health system costs in 29 studies. Seventeen studies predicted a lower prevalence of cigarette smoking. Models that predicted negative population impacts assumed very high e-cigarette initiation rates among non-smokers and that e-cigarette use would discourage smoking cessation by a large margin. The majority of the studies were based on US population data and few studies included factors other than smoking status, such as jurisdictional tobacco control policies or social influence. CONCLUSIONS: A population increase in e-cigarette use may result in lower smoking prevalence and reduced burden of disease in the long run, especially if their use can be restricted to assisting smoking cessation. Given the assumption-dependent nature of modelling outcomes, future modelling studies should consider incorporating different policy options in their projection exercises, using shorter time horizons and expanding their modelling to low-income and middle-income countries where smoking rates remain relatively high.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Delayed encephalopathy after acute carbon monoxide poisoning (DEACMP) is a severe complication that can arise from acute carbon monoxide poisoning (ACOP). This study aims to identify the independent risk factors associated with DEACMP and to develop a nomogram to predict the probability of developing DEACMP. METHODS: The data of patients diagnosed with ACOP between September 2015 and June 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were divided into the two groups: the DEACMP group and the non-DEACMP group. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were conducted to identify the independent risk factors for DEACMP. Subsequently, a nomogram was constructed to predict the probability of DEACMP. RESULTS: The study included 122 patients, out of whom 30 (24.6%) developed DEACMP. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that acute high-signal lesions on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), duration of carbon monoxide (CO) exposure, and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score were independent risk factors for DEACMP (Odds Ratio = 6.230, 1.323, 0.714, p < 0.05). Based on these indicators, a predictive nomogram was constructed. CONCLUSIONS: This study constructed a nomogram for predicting DEACMP using high-signal lesions on DWI and clinical indicators. The nomogram may serve as a dependable tool to differentiate high-risk patients and enable the provision of personalized treatment to lower the incidence of DEACMP.

RESUMO

ISSUES ADDRESSED: The increase of youth vaping in Australia has raised concerns, especially with increasing promotions of vaping products. We observed the visibility of vaping products near high-adolescent-traffic areas. METHODS: We examined stores within walking distance of high schools and the central business district (CBD) in Brisbane, Australia, observing the number and proportion of stores selling or displaying vaping products. Using an observational approach, we analysed advertisements and open displays of vaping products at tobacconists, vape stores, and convenience stores. RESULTS: We identified 61 eligible stores located near schools or in the CBD. Overall, 20% of stores displayed vaping products externally, with higher proportions among vape stores (78%) compared to tobacconists (36%). Additionally, 46% of stores had visible interior displays, with vape stores (89%) displaying them more frequently than tobacconists (71%). Among the 28 stores displaying vaping products, 57% included warnings, one store featured only flavoured products, and 25% showcased nicotine-containing products. Youth-appealing features were present in all but one store, with cartoons (61%) as the most common feature. CONCLUSION: Vapes were displayed near high schools and in the city, often featuring youth-appealing features, such as colours and flavours. SO WHAT?: The exposure to such promotions could normalise vaping and contribute to increased youth uptake. Continued monitoring of vaping product promotions is essential, particularly considering recent policy changes.

RESUMO

Background Oxidative stress and inflammation play important roles in the development of diabetes. Metformin (MET) is considered as the first-line therapy for patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC) are vital in obesity and diabetes. However, there have been few studies on the effects of MET on inflammatory reaction and oxidative stress in the PVN and ARC of T2D diabetic rats. Methods Male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were fed with high-fat diet (HFD), and intraperitoneally injected with low-dose streptozotocin (STZ, 30 mg/kg) at 6th week to induce T2D diabetes. After injection of STZ, they were fed with HFD continually. Starting from the 8th week of HFD feeding, T2D rats received intragastrical administration of MET (150 mg/kg/day) in addition to the HFD for another 8 weeks. At the end of the 15th week, the rats were anaesthetized to record the sympathetic nerve activity and collect blood and tissue samples. Results In comparison with control rats, T2D diabetic rats had higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (PICs) and excessive oxidative stress in the PVN and ARC, accompanied with more activated astrocytes. The renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) and the plasma norepinephrine (NE) increased in T2D diabetic rats. The expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) increased and the expression of 67-kDa isoform of glutamate decarboxylase (GAD67) decreased in T2D diabetic rats. Supplementation of MET decreased blood glucose, suppressed RSNA, decreased PICs (TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-6) in PVN and ARC, attenuated oxidative stress and activation of astrocytes in ARC and PVN of T2D diabetic rats, as well as restored the balance of neurotransmitter synthetase. The number of Fra-LI (chronic neuronal excitation marker) positive neurons in the ARC and PVN of T2D diabetic rats increased. Chronic supplementation of MET also decreased the number of Fra-LI positive neurons in the ARC and PVN of T2D diabetic rats. Conclusion These findings suggest that the PVN and ARC participate in the beneficial effects of MET in T2D diabetic rats, which is possibly mediated via down-regulating of inflammatory molecules, attenuating oxidative stress and restoring the balance of neurotransmitter synthetase by MET in the PVN and ARC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Multiple tobacco and e-cigarette product (MTEP) use, the concurrent use of two or more different types of tobacco and/or e-cigarettes products, is common among young people in the US. Changes in patterns of MTEP use among US youth between 2014 and 2020 were identified and the determinants of MTEP use were examined. METHODS: Four years of repeated cross-sectional data from the US National Youth Tobacco Survey of middle and high school students from grade 6 to 12 (Ntotal=77 402). Multigroup latent class analysis (LCA) was applied to the data series to allow for simultaneous identification of MTEP use patterns between 2014 and 2020. Logistic regression was used to predict class membership on demographic and tobacco-related variables. FINDINGS: Over the 7-year period, LCA identified three patterns: minimal/non-users (MNU: ~89.8%), mostly occasional e-cigarette and cigarette users (MOEC: ~9%) and polytobacco users (POLY: ~1.2%). From 2014 to 2020, MNU increased from 86.4% to 92% (p<0.05), while MOEC and POLY decreased from 11.2% to 7.9% and from 2.4% to 0.1%, respectively. The probability of regular e-cigarette use increased from 0 to 2.3% among MNU, 6% to 31.9% among MOEC and 29.6% to 67.6% among POLY (p<0.05). In binomial logistic regression, being male, in high school, non-heterosexual, living with someone who uses tobacco at home, having cognitive difficulties, having lower perceptions of tobacco's danger and exposure to tobacco marketing were associated with greater odds of MOEC and POLY than MNU. CONCLUSIONS: There was an increase in regular e-cigarette use in all three classes, but a corresponding decrease in the proportion of MTEP use. Public health interventions to discourage uptake of e-cigarettes, such as tighter restrictions on marketing to minors, are warranted and there is a need to consider disparities in the determinants of MTEP use.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive percutaneous transpedicular screw fixation (MIPTSF) is generally accepted as a minimally invasive treatment for thoracolumbar fracture. However, hidden blood loss (HBL) caused by this procedure is usually disregarded. This study aimed to investigate the amount of HBL and its influencing factors after MIPTSF in thoracolumbar fracture. METHODS: Between October 2017 and December 2020, a total of 146 patients (106 males and 40 females, age range 21-59 years) were retrospectively examined, and their clinical and radiological data were recorded and analyzed. The Pearson or Spearman correlation analysis was used to investigate an association between patient's characteristics and HBL. Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to elucidate the related clinical or radiological factors of HBL. RESULTS: A substantial amount of HBL (164.00 ± 112.02 ml, 40.65% of total blood loss (TBL)) occurred after transpedicular screw internal fixation. Multivariate linear regression analysis revealed that HBL was positively associated with TBL (p < .001), percentage of vertebral height loss (VHL) (p < .001), percentage of vertebral height restoration (VHR) (p < .001), numbers of fractured vertebrae (P = .013), and numbers of fixed vertebral segments (P = .002). CONCLUSION: A large amount of HBL was incurred in patients undergoing MIPTSF in thoracolumbar fracture. More importantly, TBL, percentage of VHL, percentage of VHR, the numbers of fractured vertebrae and fixed vertebral segments were independent risk factors for HBL.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Isoflurane is an extensively used inhalational anesthesia, and its carcinogenic or anti-cancerous effect has been identified recently. However, the specific role of isoflurane in cervical cancer remains unclear. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the function of isoflurane in cervical cancer as well as the underlying mechanism. METHODS: After isoflurane treatment, HeLa cell viability, percentage of apoptotic cells, expression of active caspase-3/9 were examined by CCK-8 assay, Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining, and Western blot analysis, respectively. ROS generation, ratio of NAD+/NADH, and ATP level after isoflurane stimulation were determined using commercial assay kits. Afterwards, activation of AMPK and autophagy was assessed through Western blot analysis and immunofluorescence. Whether AMPK mediated the isoflurane-induced apoptosis and autophagy was explored by adding an AMPK inhibitor (Compound C). The in vivo function of isoflurane was finally investigated on a HeLa cell xenograft model. RESULTS: Isoflurane inhibited cell viability and induced apoptosis evidenced by upregulation of active caspase-3/9 in HeLa cells. Oxidative stress was triggered by isoflurane, as isoflurane elevated ROS level, and lowered ratio of NAD+/NADH and ATP level. Further results showed isoflurane activated the AMPK/mTOR pathway and induced autophagy. In addition, inhibition of AMPK led to ameliorated effects of isoflurane on apoptosis and autophagy. In vivo experiments proved isoflurane could repress tumorigenesis, activate AMPK, and induce autophagy in Xenograft mouse. CONCLUSIONS: Isoflurane activated AMPK to inhibit proliferation and promote apoptosis and autophagy both in vitro and in vivo.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Inflammation and oxidative stress play important roles in energy imbalance and its complications. Recent research indicates that hypothalamic inflammation may contribute to the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome and cardiac dysfunction, but the mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesized that suppression of the proinflammatory IKKß/NF-κB pathway in the hypothalamus can improve energy balance and cardiac function in type 2 diabetic (T2D) rats. METHODS: Normal and T2D rats received bilateral hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC) infusions of the IKKß inhibitor SC-514 or vehicle via osmotic minipump. Metabolic phenotyping, immunohistochemical analyses, and biochemical analyses were used to investigate the outcomes of inhibition of the hypothalamic IKKß. Echocardiography and glucometer were used for measuring cardiac function and blood glucose, respectively. Blood samples were collected for the evaluation of circulating proinflammatory cytokines. Heart was harvested for cardiac morphology evaluations. The ARC was harvested and analyzed for IKKß, NF-κB, proinflammatory cytokines, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and NAD(P)H (gp91phox, p47phox) oxidase activity levels and neuropeptides. RESULTS: Compared with normal rats, T2D rats were characterized by hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, glucose intolerance, cardiac dysfunction, as well as higher ARC levels of IKKß, NF-κB, proinflammatory cytokines, ROS, gp91phox, and p47phox. ARC infusion of the IKKß inhibitor SC-514 attenuated all these changes in T2D rats, but not in normal rats. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that the hypothalamic IKKß/NF-κB pathway plays a key role in modulating energy imbalance and cardiac dysfunction, suggesting its potential therapeutic role during type 2 diabetes mellitus.

RESUMO

AIM: To compare the pregnancy outcomes after day 5 blastocyst-stage embryo transfers (BET) versus day 6 BET following vitrified-warmed cycle and to evaluate whether the number of embryos transferred and the chromosomal status of embryo influence effect estimates. METHODS: A literature search (PubMed, Embase and MEDLINE) up to January 2019 was conducted to identify studies where women with day 6 BET were compared to women with day 5 BET. Only studies published in English language, on peer-reviewed journal were considered eligible. The following subgroup analyses were performed: (i) number of embryos transferred and (ii) chromosomal status of embryo. RESULTS: From a total of 1956 articles identified, 23 observational studies were included in the meta-analysis. We observed that day 6 BET were associated with lower implantation rate (risk ratio, RR: 1.17, 95% confidence interval, CI: 1.10-1.24), clinical pregnancy rate (RR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.10-1.24), ongoing pregnancy rate (RR: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.07-1.24) and live birth rate (RR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.11-1.33) than day 5 BET following vitrified-warmed cycle. The subgroup analysis found that the superiority of day 5 BET compared with day 6 BET is influenced by the number of embryos transferred and chromosomal status of embryos. CONCLUSION: Current evidence shows that day 5 BET is superior to day 6 BET following vitrified-warmed cycle in clinical practice. Due to the overall low quality of available evidence, more larger and well-conducted studies are needed to compare the pregnancy outcomes between day 5 and day 6 BET before drawing a clear conclusion.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The objective of our meta-analysis was to estimate the effect of VTS on obstetric outcomes of ART singletons. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched up to January 2019 to find studies reporting the obstetric outcomes of ART singletons with VTS. Dichotomous data were expressed as odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Continuous data were expressed as weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% CI. RESULTS: A total of 17 observational studies encompassing more than 60,000 ART singletons were included in this meta-analysis. The impact of VTS on singletons was highly dependent on the definition of VTS, precisely, the vanishing timing and intrauterine growth stage. When VTS happened at or before 14 weeks, regardless of intrauterine growth stage, there were no differences in terms of gestational age (GA) [WMD = - 0.08, 95% CI = - 0.27, 0.10], preterm birth (< 37 weeks) (PTB) [OR = 1.23, 95% CI = 0.89, 1.70], and low birth weight (< 2.5 kg) (LBW) [OR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.00, 2.43] in original singletons versus singleton with VTS. On the contrary, VTS occurred after 14 weeks was associated with significantly shorter GW and lower BW, as well as higher risks of PTB and LBW. When the sac reduced in VTS was an empty gestational sac, there would be no differences in GW, PTB, and LBW between singletons versus singletons with VTS, whereas the loss of a fetus with cardiac-activity was associated with adverse obstetric outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis suggests whether or not VTS is harmful to obstetric outcomes is highly dependent on the vanishing timing and intrauterine growth stage.

RESUMO

The cloud optical depth (COD) is one of the important parameters used to characterize atmospheric clouds. We analyzed the seasonal variations in the COD over East Asia in 2011 using cloud mode data from the AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) ground-based observational network. The applicability of the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) COD product was verified and compared with the AERONET cloud mode dataset. There was a good correlation between the AERONET and the MODIS. The spatial and temporal distribution and trends in the COD over China were then analyzed using MODIS satellite data from 2003 to 2016. The seasonal changes in the AERONET data and the time sequence variation of the satellite data suggest that the seasonal variations in the COD are significant. The result shows that the COD first decreases and then increases with the season in northern China, and reaches the maximum in summer and minimum in winter. However, the spatial distribution change is just the opposite in southern China. The spatial variation trend shows the COD in China decreases first with time and gradually increases after 2014. And the trend of COD in the western and central China is consistent with that in China. While the trend of COD shows a continuously increasing over time in northeast China and the Pearl River Delta.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Tobacco product excise taxes are a cost-effective method for reducing tobacco consumption, but industry pricing and marketing strategies encourage consumers to engage in price-minimizing behaviours (PMBs). We investigated the relationship between tobacco tax increases and PMBs, measuring whether PMBs intensify following tax increases, whether low-income consumers with higher nicotine dependence are more likely to engage in PMBs and whether PMBs are negatively related to smoking cessation. METHOD: This was a systematic review with meta-analysis of cross-sectional and longitudinal studies from seven databases up to March 2023, using studies that reported any product- and purchasing-related smoking behaviours post-tobacco tax increase in a general representative population. Sixty-eight studies were quality-assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. All studies were narratively synthesized, with five studies involving 13 068-26 575 participants providing data for pooled analyses on PMBs [purchasing lower-priced brands, roll-your-own (RYO) tobacco and cartons] pre- and post-tax increases using a random effects meta-analytical model. RESULTS: Fifty-seven studies reported on legal PMBs, and 17 studies reported illicit cigarette purchasing. Meta-analysis showed that consecutive tax increases were positively associated with purchasing RYO [odds ratio (OR) = 1.60, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.04-2.46], especially in higher tobacco taxing environments, with substantial heterogeneity (I2 = 96%). Lower income and higher nicotine dependence were associated with purchasing lower-priced brands and RYO, whereas higher income and nicotine dependence were associated with purchasing cartons, large-sized packs and cross-border sales. Less evidence associated illicit tobacco purchases with tax increases or PMBs with smoking cessation. CONCLUSIONS: Tobacco purchasers' PMBs vary widely by state, country and time-period within countries. Both legal and illegal PMBs, potentially influenced by industry pricing tactics, may exacerbate health inequalities and dilute the public health benefits of tobacco tax increases.

RESUMO

In recent years, the demand for clinical bone grafting has increased. As a new solution for orthopedic implants, polyether ether ketone (PEEK, crystalline PAEK) has excellent comprehensive performance and is practically applied in the clinic. In this research, a noteworthy elevated scheme to enhance the performance of PEEK scaffolds is presented. The amorphous aggregated poly (aryl ether ketone) (PAEK) resin is prepared as the matrix material, which maintains high mechanical strength and can be processed through the solution. So, the tissue engineering scaffolds with multilevel pores can be printed by low-temperature deposited manufacturing (LDM) to improve biologically inert scaffolds with smooth surfaces. Also, the feature of PAEK's solution processing is profitable to uniformly add the functional components for bone repair. Ultimately, A system of orthopedic implantable PAEK material based on intermolecular interactions, surface topology, and surface modification is established. The specific steps include synthesizing PAEK that contain polar carboxyl structures, preparing bioinks and fabricating scaffolds by LDM, preparation of scaffolds with strontium-doped mineralized coatings, evaluation of their osteogenic properties in vitro and in vivo, and investigation on the effect and mechanism of scaffolds in promoting osteogenic differentiation. This work provides an upgraded system of PAEK implantable materials for clinical application.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Medicinal cannabis is now legal in 44 US jurisdictions. Between 2020 and 2021 alone, four US jurisdictions legalised medicinal cannabis. The aim of this study is to identify themes in medicinal cannabis tweets from US jurisdictions with different legal statuses of cannabis from January to June 2021. METHODS: A total of 25,099 historical tweets from 51 US jurisdictions were collected using Python. Content analysis was performed on a random sample of tweets accounting for the population size of each US jurisdictions (n = 750). Results were presented separately by tweets posted from jurisdictions where all cannabis use (non-medicinal and medicinal) is 'fully legalised', 'illegal' and legal for 'medical-only' use. RESULTS: Four themes were identified: 'Policy', 'Therapeutic value', 'Sales and industry opportunities' and 'Adverse effects'. Most of the tweets were posted by the public. The most common theme was related to 'Policy' (32.5%-61.5% of the tweets). Tweets on 'Therapeutic value' were prevalent in all jurisdictions and accounted for 23.8%-32.1% of the tweets. Sales and promotional activities were prominent even in illegal jurisdictions (12.1%-26.5% of the tweets). Fewer than 10% of tweets were about intoxication and withdrawal symptoms. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: This study has explored if content themes of medicinal cannabis tweets differed by cannabis legal status. Most tweets were pro-cannabis and they were related to policy, therapeutic value, and sales and industry opportunities. Tweets on unsubstantiated health claims, adverse effects and crime warrants continued surveillance as these conversations could allow us to estimate cannabis-related harms to inform health surveillance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Stem cell-based therapy (SCT) is an important component of regenerative therapy that brings hope to many patients. After decades of development, SCT has made significant progress in the research of various diseases, and the market size has also expanded significantly. The transition of SCT from small-scale, customized experiments to routine clinical practice requires the assistance of standards. Many countries and international organizations around the world have developed corresponding SCT standards, which have effectively promoted the further development of the SCT industry. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature review to introduce the clinical application progress of SCT and focus on the development status of SCT standardization. RESULTS: We first briefly introduced the types and characteristics of stem cells, and summarized the current clinical application and market development of SCT. Subsequently, we focused on the development status of SCT-related standards as of now from three levels: the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), important international organizations, and national organizations. Finally, we provided perspectives and conclusions on the significance and challenges of SCT standardization. CONCLUSIONS: Standardization plays an important role in the sustained, rapid and healthy development of SCT.

RESUMO

Surface electromyography (sEMG) has emerged as a valuable tool for assessing muscle activity in various clinical and research settings. This review focuses on the application of sEMG specifically in the context of paraspinal muscles. The paraspinal muscles play a critical role in providing stability and facilitating movement of the spine. Dysfunctions or alterations in paraspinal muscle activity can lead to various musculoskeletal disorders and spinal pathologies. Therefore, understanding and quantifying paraspinal muscle activity is crucial for accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring therapeutic interventions. This review discusses the clinical applications of sEMG in paraspinal muscles, including the assessment of low back pain, spinal disorders, and rehabilitation interventions. It explores how sEMG can aid in diagnosing the potential causes of low back pain and monitoring the effectiveness of physical therapy, spinal manipulative therapy, and exercise protocols. It also discusses emerging technologies and advancements in sEMG techniques that aim to enhance the accuracy and reliability of paraspinal muscle assessment. In summary, the application of sEMG in paraspinal muscles provides valuable insights into muscle function, dysfunction, and therapeutic interventions. By examining the literature on sEMG in paraspinal muscles, this review offers a comprehensive understanding of the current state of research, identifies knowledge gaps, and suggests future directions for optimizing the use of sEMG in assessing paraspinal muscle activity.
