RESUMO

We search for the dark photon dark matter (DPDM) using a cryogenic millimeter-wave receiver. DPDM has a kinetic coupling with electromagnetic fields with a coupling constant of χ and is converted into ordinary photons at the surface of a metal plate. We search for signal of this conversion in the frequency range 18-26.5 GHz, which corresponds to the mass range 74-110 µeV/c^{2}. We observed no significant signal excess, allowing us to set an upper bound of χ<(0.3-2.0)×10^{-10} at 95% confidence level. This is the most stringent constraint to date and tighter than cosmological constraints. Improvements from previous studies are obtained by employing a cryogenic optical path and a fast spectrometer.

RESUMO

Radio absorptive materials (RAMs) are key elements for receivers in the millimeter-wave range. We previously established a method for production of RAM by using a 3D-printed mold. An advantage of this method is a wide range of choices for absorptive materials to be used. To take advantage of this flexibility, we added a range of absorptive materials to a base epoxy resin, STYCAST-2850FT, and examined the optical performance of the resultant RAM across a wide frequency range under cryogenic conditions. We found that adding a particular type of carbon fiber produced the best performance with a reflectance at 77 K estimated as 0.01%-3% over a frequency range of 20-300 GHz.

RESUMO

Using only cosmic microwave background polarization data from the polarbear experiment, we measure B-mode polarization delensing on subdegree scales at more than 5σ significance. We achieve a 14% B-mode power variance reduction, the highest to date for internal delensing, and improve this result to 22% by applying for the first time an iterative maximum a posteriori delensing method. Our analysis demonstrates the capability of internal delensing as a means of improving constraints on inflationary models, paving the way for the optimal analysis of next-generation primordial B-mode experiments.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Epidemiological studies have shown that consumption of dairy products reduces the risk of dementia and cognitive decline in older individuals. Tryptophan-tyrosine-related ß-lactopeptides and their representative ß-lactolin of glycine-threonine-tryptophan-tyrosine tetra-peptide have been identified as agents in dairy products, which improve cognitive function as well as memory function via the activation of the dopaminergic system in a mouse model of amnesia. Previous clinical trials have shown that supplementation with ß-lactolin improves memory retrieval in healthy older adults. Specifically, ß-lactolin improved the scores in some neuropsychological tests. However, the effects of ß-lactolin on memory function have not been clarified. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ß-lactolin on memory function using statistical methods. DATA SOURCES: We searched the Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and JDream III until November 2021 to identify relevant randomized controlled trials for integrated analysis. DATA SYNTHESIS: Three randomized controlled trials evaluating the effect of ß-lactolin on memory in healthy adults were selected for the integrated analysis. The results showed that the score of cued recall among the neuropsychological tests in the ß-lactolin group was significantly higher than that in the placebo group (g=0.33; 95% CI: 0.10, 0.55). In addition, the total memory score was higher but this difference was not significant (g=0.17; 95% CI: -0.09, 0.43). CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, these results suggest that supplementation with ß-lactolin improves cued recall in healthy older adults.

RESUMO

We established a production method of a millimeter-wave absorber by using a 3D-printed mold. The mold has a periodic pyramid shape, and an absorptive material is filled into the mold. This shape reduces the surface reflection. The 3D-printed mold is made from a transparent material in the millimeter-wave range. Therefore, unmolding is not necessary. A significant benefit of this production method is easy prototyping with various shapes and various absorptive materials. We produced a test model and used a two-component epoxy encapsulant as the absorptive material. The test model achieved a low reflectance: ∼1% at 100 GHz. The absorber is sometimes maintained at a low temperature condition for cases in which superconducting detectors are used. Therefore, cryogenic performance is required in terms of a mechanical strength for the thermal cycles, an adhesive strength, and a sufficient thermal conductivity. We confirmed the test-model strength by immersing the model into a liquid-nitrogen bath.

RESUMO

We describe the Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) used for in-field testing of the POLARBEAR receiver, an experiment located in the Atacama Desert of Chile which measures the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization. The POLARBEAR-FTS (PB-FTS) is a Martin-Puplett interferometer designed to couple to the Huan Tran Telescope (HTT) on which the POLARBEAR receiver is installed. The PB-FTS measured the spectral response of the POLARBEAR receiver with signal-to-noise ratio >20 for ∼69% of the focal plane detectors due to three features: a high throughput of 15.1 sr cm2, optimized optical coupling to the POLARBEAR optics using a custom designed output parabolic mirror, and a continuously modulated output polarizer. The PB-FTS parabolic mirror is designed to mimic the shape of the 2.5 m-diameter HTT primary reflector, which allows for optimum optical coupling to the POLARBEAR receiver, reducing aberrations and systematics. One polarizing grid is placed at the output of the PB-FTS and modulated via continuous rotation. This modulation allows for decomposition of the signal into different harmonics that can be used to probe potentially pernicious sources of systematic error in a polarization-sensitive instrument. The high throughput and continuous output polarizer modulation features are unique compared to other FTS calibrators used in the CMB field. In-field characterization of the POLARBEAR receiver was accomplished using the PB-FTS in April 2014. We discuss the design, construction, and operation of the PB-FTS and present the spectral characterization of the POLARBEAR receiver. We introduce future applications for the PB-FTS in the next-generation CMB experiment, the Simons Array.

RESUMO

Gangliosides, sialic acid-containing glycosphingo-lipids, are enriched in the mammalian nervous system. Since mutant mice with disrupted beta1,4-N-acetylgalactosaminyl-transferase (GM2/GD2 synthase) were generated, there have been several studies on the pathology of the mutant mice, i.e. mild functional disorders and Wallerian degeneration in the peripheral nervous system. To further analyze the chronological alteration in the mutant mice, we examined the peripheral and CNS mainly with morphological approaches, such as electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Accordingly with the sensory dysfunction, neural degeneration, glial proliferation and synaptic remodeling in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord were found in adult mice. Thick astrocytic processes with densely packed glial filaments were extended among the neuropils and around blood vessels. Morphological changes in the synaptic vesicles and modes of synaptic contacts with central terminals were detected, suggesting synaptic remodeling following the degeneration. These results suggest that complex gangliosides are essential in the maintenance of integrity in architecture and function of the nervous system, lack of which results in neural degeneration in a sensory nerve-dominant manner.

RESUMO

Expression of protein kinase C isoforms at the mRNA level was examined with papilloma and carcinoma of mouse skin. Of the nine isoforms examined, the alpha, delta and eta isoforms were expressed in papilloma and carcinoma at high levels, whereas expressions of beta, epsilon and zeta isoforms were very weak. No or little signals for the gamma and theta isoforms were observed in skin tumors. When compared with normal skin, only the delta isoform was highly expressed in carcinoma at about 2-fold the normal skin or papilloma, while the remaining isoforms were at a similar level to normal skin.

RESUMO

Gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) and cell proliferation were studied in control and 1,1'-bis(p-chlorophenyl)-2, 2,2,-trichloroethane (DDT) treated precision-cut liver slices of rat by evaluating connexin 32 (Cx32) expression and 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation. In addition, the effect of different culture media (RPMI and WME) on control and DDT influenced Cx32 expression and cell proliferation was determined. Cx32 expression in control precision-cut liver slices was maintained during 8 h of culturing, but decreased after prolonged culturing. Control cell proliferation was significantly higher when WME was used as culture medium than when RPMI was used. In slices treated with DDT Cx32 expression was decreased. In slices cultured in RPMI medium, this decrease preceded a dose-dependent increase in cell proliferation. These results show the usefulness of precision-cut liver slices in studying cellular proliferation and intercellular communication.

RESUMO

For the accurate analysis of possible interactive effects of chemicals in a defined mixture, statistical designs are necessary to develop clear and manageable experiments. For instance, factorial designs have been successfully used to detect two-factor interactions. Particularly useful for this purpose are fractionated factorial designs, requiring only a fraction of all possible combinations of a full factorial design. Once the potential interaction has been detected with a fractionated design, a more accurate analysis can be performed for the particular binary mixtures to ensure and characterize these interactions. In this paper this approach is illustrated using an in vitro cytotoxicity assay to detect the presence of mixtures of Fusarium mycotoxins in contaminated food samples. We have investigated interactions between five mycotoxin species (Trichothecenes, Fumonisins, and Zearalenone) using the DNA synthesis inhibition assay in L929 fibroblasts. First, a central composite design was applied to identify possible interactive effects between mycotoxins in the mixtures (27 combinations from 5(5) possible combinations). Then two-factor interactions of particular interest were further analyzed by the use of a full factorial design (5 x 5 design) to characterize the nature of those interactions more precisely. Results show that combined exposure to several classes of mycotoxins generally results in effect addition with a few minor exceptions indicating synergistic interactions. In general, the nature of the interactions characterized in the full factorial design was similar to the nature of those observed in the central composite design. However, the magnitude of interaction was relatively small in the full factorial design.

RESUMO

Despite the apparent high availability of psychiatric services in Japan, the quality and type of care have historically been lower than that provided in Western society. However, Japanese psychiatry is undergoing a period of transition. Recent changes in the provision of health care, the adoption of internationally standardized diagnostic criteria, the availability of newer antidepressant drugs such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and other social and economic factors mean that psychiatric services are improving at various levels.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To provide primary care physicians with a better understanding of transcultural issues in depression and anxiety. PARTICIPANTS: The 4 members of the International Consensus Group on Depression and Anxiety were James C. Ballenger (chair), Jonathan R. T. Davidson, Yves Lecrubier, and David J. Nutt. Five faculty invited by the chair also participated: Laurence J. Kirmayer, Jean-Pierre Lepine, Keh-Ming Lin, Osamu Tajima, and Yutaka Ono. EVIDENCE: The consensus statement is based on the 5 review articles that are published in this supplement and the scientific literature relevant to the issues reviewed in these articles. CONSENSUS PROCESS: Group meetings were held over a 2-day period. On day 1, the group discussed the review articles, and the chair identified key issues for further debate. On day 2, the group discussed these issues to arrive at a consensus view. After the group meetings, the consensus statement was drafted by the chair and approved by all attendees. CONCLUSION: The consensus statement underlines the prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders across all cultures and nations while recognizing that cultural differences exist in symptom presentation and prevalence estimates. In all countries, the recognition of depression by clinicians in the primary care setting is low (generally less than 50%), and the consensus group recommends a 2-step process to aid the recognition and diagnosis of depression. In line with the low recognition of depression and anxiety disorders is the finding that only a small proportion of patients with depression or anxiety are receiving appropriate treatments for their condition. Biological diversity across ethnic groups may account for the differential sensitivity of some groups to psychotropic medication, but this area requires further investigation.

RESUMO

The membrane protein syntaxin (originally named HPC-1) is involved in vesicle trafficking and required for neurotransmitter release at nerve terminals. The presence of syntaxin on target membranes is hypothesized to confer specificity to targeting and fusion via interactions with complementary vesicle-associated proteins. To elucidate the function of syntaxin 1A in exocytosis, HPC-1/syntaxin 1A-reduced PC12h cells (PC12h/Deltasyx) that were stably transfected with a plasmid for antisense syntaxin 1A expression were constructed. Depolarizing stimulation of PC12h/Deltasyx enhanced dopamine release, compared with PC12h. There was a strong inverse correlation between syntaxin 1A protein expression and enhancement of dopamine release. Reduction of syntaxin 1A had no effect on increase of the cytoplasmic free Ca2+ concentration by depolarized stimulation. Moreover, PC12h/Deltasyx clones similarly enhanced of exocytosis by native secretagogues. These results indicate that syntaxin 1A has more than one function in exocytosis.

RESUMO

Bone metabolism is strongly influenced by heredity and environmental factors. To investigate interaction of the effects between vitamin D receptor polymorphism by Fok I and resistance exercise training on bone metabolism, young male subjects with FF genotype (F, n = 10) and Ff or ff genotypes (f, n = 10) followed 1 mo of weight training, and changes in bone metabolism were compared. An additional 14 subjects served as a sedentary control. Biomarkers of bone formation, bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, and osteocalcin were significantly increased by training in both F and f groups. 1, 25-Dihydroxyvitamin D(3), known to upregulate bone formation, was also increased by the training in the f but not in the F group. Bone resorption assessed by cross-linked NH(2)-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen was significantly suppressed by the training, and the decrease in F was greater and longer lasting than that in f group. In conclusion, stimulation of bone formation and suppression of bone resorption occurred within 1 mo in young men. Despite a significant increase in 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) in the f group but not in the F group, the response of bone metabolism to the training in the F was similar to or greater than that in f group, suggesting a functional difference between vitamin D receptor genotypes f and F.

RESUMO

1. Zonisamide, an anticonvulsant developed in Japan, is structurally similar to serotonin. Zonisamide has been proven to have a pharmacological profile that is very similar to that of carbamazepine. Thus, the effect of zonisamide was examined in 24 psychiatric patients: 15 with bipolar manic state, 6 with schizoaffective manic state, and 3 schizophrenic excitement. 2. Approximately 25% of all the patients and 33% of the bipolar manic patients showed remarkable global improvement with the addition of zonisamide. Approximately 71% of all the patients and 80% of the bipolar group had more than moderate global improvement. 3. No serious adverse reactions were found and no patients required zonisamide withdrawal. One patient developed both leukocytosis and mildly abnormal liver function test. One developed leukocytosis and another reported mild sleepiness. These reactions disappeared when zonisamide was discontinued.

RESUMO

We report here 4 patients with Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) who had classic symptoms including a history of bronchial asthma, severe eosinophilia and necrotizing vasculitis. The antineutrophil antibody (ANCA) against myeloperoxidase (MPO) titers was elevated (44-877 ELISA units), but the ANCA against proteinase-3 (PR3) was negative in all patients. One case was complicated with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and required plasmapheresis and continuous hemodiafiltration. One other patient clinically showed rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis and had hemodialysis 24 times. Two of 4 patients showed good responses with corticosteroid therapy alone, while 2 patients required the addition of cyclophosphamide. Urinary abnormalities such as proteinuria or microscopic hematuria were found in all patients. Three patients had a decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and renal biopsy specimens obtained from these patients showed crescentic glomerulonephritis. One patient had mild to moderate mesangial-proliferative glomerulonephritis with interstitial eosinophilic infiltration. These findings suggest that renal involvements in CSS may not be as uncommon a disorder as previously considered, especially when MPO-ANCA is positive. MPO-ANCA may be associated with the onset of glomerular disorders in CSS.

RESUMO

This paper presents a test strategy to detect interactive effects between several mycotoxins using a DNA synthesis inhibition assay in L929 cells. The joint action of the Fusarium mycotoxins T-2 toxin (T2), deoxynivalenol (DON), nivalenol (NIV), zearalenone (ZEA) and fumonisin (FB1) was studied in a tiered approach. In the first stage, the mycotoxins were tested either jointly in a five-compound mixture, or individually. At the highest dose level, the mixture showed a clear less than additive action of the mycotoxins, as compared to the effects of the five individual compounds, whereas at lower dose levels the mycotoxins behaved additive. In the second stage, the non-additivity as established in the first experiment was further analyzed with a central composite design to detect interactions between specific mycotoxins in the mixture. This experiment confirmed less than additivity for five of the mixes tested. However, it also revealed four significant synergistic interactions between mycotoxins. Finally, two interactions that were established in stage 2 were further studied in full factorial designs involving two mycotoxins. One of the interactions observed in the central composite design was retrieved whereas the other two-factor interaction was not. It was concluded that several classes of mycotoxins when present simultaneously in a mixture might show interaction. The effect of the mixture cannot be predicted solely on the basis of the effect of the individual compounds.

RESUMO

Salmonella enteritidis is the cause of human salmonellosis associated with contaminated eggs. In this study, we artificially challenged S. enteritidis to chicks just after hatching, and the effects of breeding conditions on the intestinal carriage of S. enteritidis were examined. S. enteritidis was not directly detected from spleen, liver and blood, but were constantly isolated from the cecal contents throughout the experiment. When chicks were reared in the unsanitary conditions and in the high housing density, the numbers of S. enteritidis increased. The subsequent experiment was undertaken to examine whether the antibacterial additive in a feed would have any impact on S. enteritidis colonization in chicks. Some antibiotic effective on the growth promotion had an influence on S. enteritidis colonization.

RESUMO

We developed a cryogenic system on a rotating table that achieves sub-Kelvin conditions. The cryogenic system consists of a helium sorption cooler and a pulse tube cooler in a cryostat mounted on a rotating table. Two rotary-joint connectors for electricity and helium gas circulation enable the coolers to be operated and maintained with ease. We performed cool-down tests under a condition of continuous rotation at 20 rpm. We obtained a temperature of 0.23 K with a holding time of more than 24 h, thus complying with catalog specifications. We monitored the system's performance for four weeks; two weeks with and without rotation. A few-percent difference in conditions was observed between these two states. Most applications can tolerate such a slight difference. The technology developed is useful for various scientific applications requiring sub-Kelvin conditions on rotating platforms.

RESUMO

We developed a system that continuously maintains a cryocooler for long periods on a rotating table. A cryostat that holds the cryocooler is set on the table. A compressor is located on the ground and supplies high-purity (>99.999%) and high-pressure (1.7 MPa) helium gas and electricity to the cryocooler. The operation of the cryocooler and other instruments requires the development of interface components between the ground and rotating table. A combination of access holes at the center of the table and two rotary joints allows simultaneous circulation of electricity and helium gas. The developed system provides two innovative functions under the rotating condition, cooling from room temperature and the maintenance of a cold condition for long periods. We have confirmed these abilities as well as temperature stability under a condition of continuous rotation at 20 rpm. The developed system can be applied in various fields, e.g., in tests of Lorentz invariance, searches for axion, radio astronomy, and cosmology, and application of radar systems. In particular, there is a plan to use this system for a radio telescope observing cosmic microwave background radiation.
