PURPOSE: Anastomotic leakage is a serious complication of colorectal cancer surgery, prolonging hospital stays and impacting patient prognosis. Preventive colostomy is required in patients at risk of anastomotic fistulas. However, it remains unclear whether the commonly used loop colostomy(LC) or loop ileostomy(LI) can reduce the complications of colorectal surgery. This study aims to compare perioperative morbidities associated with LC and LI following anterior rectal cancer resection, including LC and LI reversal. METHODS: In this meta-analysis, the Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for prospective cohort studies, retrospective cohort studies, and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on perioperative morbidity during stoma development and reversal up to July 2023, The meta-analysis included 10 trials with 2036 individuals (2 RCTs and 8 cohorts). RESULTS: No significant differences in morbidity, mortality, or stoma-related issues were found between the LI and LC groups after anterior resection surgery. However, patients in the LC group exhibited higher rates of stoma prolapse (RR: 0.39; 95%CI: 0.19-0.82; P = 0.01), retraction (RR: 0.45; 95%CI: 0.29-0.71; P < 0.01), surgical site infection (RR: 0.52; 95%CI: 0.27-1.00; P = 0.05) and incisional hernias (RR: 0.53; 95%CI: 0.32-0.89; P = 0.02) after stoma closure compared to those in the LI group. Conversely, the LI group showed higher rates of dehydration or electrolyte imbalances(RR: 2.98; 95%CI: 1.51-5.89; P < 0.01), high-output(RR: 6.17; 95%CI: 1.24-30.64; P = 0.03), and renal insufficiency post-surgery(RR: 2.51; 95%CI: 1.01-6.27; P = 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our study strongly recommends a preventive LI for anterior resection due to rectal cancer. However, ileostomy is more likely to result in dehydration, renal insufficiency, and intestinal obstruction. More multicenter RCTs are needed to corroborate this.

BACKGROUND: Appendicitis is one of the most common acute surgical conditions globally. However, the association between nighttime appendectomy and patients' morbidity and mortality is unclear. This study aims to compare outcomes following nighttime versus daytime appendectomy. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases up to March 26, 2024 (updated on July 1, 2024) were searched. The primary outcomes were postoperative complications and mortality. Secondary outcomes included intraoperative complications, reoperation, readmission, conversion to laparotomy, hospital stay and operation time. Mean difference (MD) or odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. RESULTS: Fifteen studies totaling 33,596 patients were included. There were no differences between nighttime and daytime appendectomy for rates of overall postoperative complications (OR 0.93, 95% CI 0.87, 1.00, 14 studies), mortality (OR 1.70, 95% CI 0.37, 7.88, 7 studies), intraoperative complications (OR 0.88, 95% CI 0.08, 9.86; 2 studies), reoperation (OR 0.39, 95% CI 0.06, 2.55; 3 studies) and readmission (OR 0.86, 95% CI 0.65, 1.13; I2 = 0%, 5 studies). However, the conversion to laparotomy risks (OR 1.92, 95% CI 1.12, 3.29; 6 studies) among patients who underwent appendectomy during nighttime was significantly elevated compared to daytime. CONCLUSIONS: There was no increased risk or difference in postoperative mortality and complication rates associated with nighttime compared with daytime appendectomy. However, future studies should assess the reasons for higher conversion rates during the night.

The aim of this study was to assess effects of MnO2 addition (CK-0%, T1-2% and T2-5%) on humification and bacterial community during municipal sludge (MS) composting. The results suggested that MnO2 addition inhibited the growth of Nitrospira but stimulated Nonomuraea, Actinomadura, Streptomyces and Thermopolyspora, facilitating the lignocellulose degradation and humification with the increase in organic matter degradation by 13.8%-19.2% and humic acid content by 10.9%-20.6%. Compared to CK, the abundances of exoglucanase (EC:3.2.1.91), endo-1,4-beta-xylanase (EC:3.2.1.136) and endomannanase (EC:3.2.1.78) increased by 88-99, 52-66 and 4-15 folds, respectively. However, 5%-MnO2 induced the enrichment of Mizugakiibacter that harms the environment of agricultural production. The addition of 2%-MnO2 was recommended for MS composting. Furthermore, metabolic function analysis indicated that MnO2 addition altered amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism, especially enhancing propanoate metabolism and butanoate metabolism but inhibiting citrate cycle. Structural equation modeling revealed that Nonomuraea and Actinomadura were the main drivers for lignocellulose degradation. This study provided theoretical guidance in regulating humification via MnO2 for MS composting.

BACKGROUND: Despite numerous observational studies, the causal relationship between obesity-measured by body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC)-as well as type 2 diabetes (T2D), lifestyle habits, and susceptibility to low back pain (LBP) remains obscure. METHODS: This investigation employed two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore causality, using genetic variants linked to relevant factors from genome-wide association studies (GWASs). Specifically, we selected independent genetic variants related to BMI, WC, T2D, smoking, alcohol consumption, and coffee intake from established GWASs, all of which demonstrated genome-wide significance. The comparative data for LBP were derived from a GWAS involving European subjects, under the auspices of the renowned MRC-IEU (Medical Research Council Integrative Epidemiology Unit) consortium. RESULTS: Elevated BMI and WC were associated with odds ratios of 1.002 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.001-1.004, p < 0.001) and 1.003 (95% CI = 1.002-1.004, p < 0.001) for LBP per standard deviation (SD) increase, respectively. Regarding smoking initiation and coffee consumption, the odds ratios stood at 1.002 (95% CI = 1.001-1.004, p = 0.001) and 1.004 (95% CI = 1.001-1.008, p = 0.034) for LBP, respectively. However, an augmented log odds ratio for T2D and each SD rise in alcohol consumption frequency revealed no significant causal impact on LBP risk. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate a potential causal link between obesity, smoking, and coffee intake in the genesis of LBP, suggesting that mitigating these factors could contribute to LBP prevention.

Environmental photocatalysis is a promising technology for treating antibiotics in wastewater. In this study, a supercritical carbonization method was developed to synthesize a single-atom photocatalyst with a high loading of Ni (above 5 wt.%) anchored on a carbon-nitrogen-silicate substrate for the efficient photodegradation of a ubiquitous environmental contaminant of tetracycline (TC). The photocatalyst was prepared from an easily obtained metal-biopolymer-inorganic supramolecular hydrogel, followed by supercritical drying and carbonization treatment. The low-temperature (300°C) supercritical ethanol treatment prevents the excessive structural degradation of hydrogel and greatly reduces the metal clustering and aggregation, which contributed to the high Ni loading. Atomic characterizations confirmed that Ni was present at isolated sites and stabilized by Ni-N and Ni-O bonds in a Ni-(N/O)6C/SiC configuration. A 5% Ni-C-Si catalyst, which performed the best among the studied catalysts, exhibited a wide visible light response with a narrow bandgap of 1.45 eV that could efficiently and repeatedly catalyze the oxidation of TC with a conversion rate of almost 100% within 40 min. The reactive species trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests demonstrated that the h+, and ·O2- were mainly responsible for TC degradation. The TC degradation mechanism and possible reaction pathways were provided also. Overall, this study proposed a novel strategy to synthesize a high metal loading single-atom photocatalyst that can efficiently remove TC with high concentrations, and this strategy might be extended for synthesis of other carbon-based single-atom catalysts with valuable properties.

The effect of glutamine on postoperative complications and postoperative recovery in rectal cancer (RC) patients receiving neoadjuvant therapy (NT) is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of intravenous glutamine supplementation on short-term postoperative outcomes in these patients. This retrospective study included patients with RC who received NT and underwent radical surgery between January 2013 and July 2022 and were either administered glutamine (glutamine group) or not administered glutamine (non-glutamine group). Propensity score matching method was used to analyze and compare postoperative complications and other outcome indicators. A total of 208 patients were reviewed, and 53 were included in each group post matching. While no significant difference in the time to first solid food intake between the two groups was observed, the glutamine group had a significantly reduced incidence of postoperative complications, shorter length of hospital stay, and shorter time to first defecation, first exhaust, and first fluid diet intake than those of the control group. Moreover, glutamine alleviated the reduction in albumin and prealbumin levels. Perioperative parenteral glutamine supplementation effectively reduces the incidence of postoperative complications, promotes postoperative recovery, and improves albumin levels in patients undergoing RC surgery and receiving NT.

Double-atom catalysts (DACs) for harmful nitrate (NO3-) electroreduction to valuable ammonia (eNO3RR) is attractive for both environmental remediation and energy transformation. However, the limited metal loading in most DACs largely hinders their applications in practical catalytic applications. Therefore, exploring ultrahigh-density (UHD) DACs with abundant active metal centers and excellent eNO3RR activity is highly desired under the site-distance effect. Herein, starting from the experimental M2N6 motif deposited on graphene, we firstly screened the low-density (LD) Mn2N6 and Fe2N6 DACs with high eNO3RR activity and then established an appropriate activity descriptor for the LD-DAC system. By utilizing this descriptor, the corresponding Mn2N6 and Fe2N6 UHD-DACs with dynamic, thermal, thermodynamic, and electrochemical stabilities, are identified to locate at the peak of activity volcano, exhibiting rather-low limiting potentials of -0.25 and -0.38 V, respectively. Further analysis in term of spin state and orbital interaction, confirms that the electronic state effect similar to that of LD-DACs enable the excellent eNO3RR activity to be maintained in the UHD-DACs. These findings highlight the promising application of Mn2N6 and Fe2N6 UHD-DACs in nitrate electroreduction for NH3 production and provide impetus for further experimental exploration of ultrahigh-density DACs based on their intrinsic electronic states.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening faces two major challenges: insufficient screening coverage and poor adherence. A smartphone applet named "Early Screening Assistant (ESA)" was developed to create an online risk-assessment and fecal occult blood test (FOBT) at home. This retrospective study was designed to evaluate whether the new CRC screening strategy can improve the colonoscopy participation rate (PR) and lesion detection rate (DR). METHODS: In total, 6194 individuals who accepted normal health examinations and CRC screening based on the ESA from June 2020 to May 2022 were assigned to the ESA group. Accordingly, 7923 inhabitants who only accepted normal health examinations were assigned to the control group. The colonoscopy PR and neoplastic lesion DR were then compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Overall, a higher proportion of subjects in the ESA group (285 of 6194 [4.6%]) completed colonoscopy than in the control group (126 of 7923, [1.6%]), p < 0.01). The neoplastic lesion DR also significantly increased in the ESA group (76 of 6194 [1.22%]) compared with the control group (15 of 7923 [0.19%]) (p < 0.01). The adjusted diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of the "Online assessment + FOBT at home" were 41.5% and 62.6% for neoplastic lesions, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This retrospective cohort study confirmed that the new CRC screening strategy based on the "Online assessment + FOBT at home" can improve colonoscopy participation and the neoplastic lesion detection rate and may represent a promising screening strategy for CRC. The prognosis of patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) with a low CHA2DS2-VASc score (0-1) following a stroke is not well studied. In this investigation, stroke risk factors and prognostic markers in low-risk NVAF patients who are nonetheless at risk for stroke were examined.From January 2012 to January 2022, we retrospectively assessed atrial fibrillation (AF) patients at Xiamen University's Zhongshan Hospital for ischemic stroke. Along with a control group of patients with CHA2DS2-VASc scores of 0-1 who weren't suffering from a stroke, patients with CHA2DS2-VASc scores of 0-1 at the time of stroke were included in the study. Using multivariate logistic regression, independent risk factors were identified. To assess the cumulative occurrences of in-hospital mortality in patients with NVAF-related stroke, the Kaplan-Meier method was used.The study included 156 out of 3.237 inpatients with AF-related stroke who had CHA2DS2-VASc ratings of 0-1. Left atrial diameter (LAD) (odds ratio [OR]: 1.858, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.136-3.036, P = 0.013), D-dimer (OR: 2.569, 95% CI 1.274-5.179, P = 0.008), and NT-proBNP (OR: 4.558, 95% CI 2.060-10.087, P = 0.000) were found to be independent risk factors for stroke in NVAF patients with a low CHA2DS2-VASc score. During hospitalization, nine patients with NVAF-related stroke died. In patients with NVAF-related stroke, NT-proBNP (hazard ratio: 3.504, 95% CI 1.079-11.379, P = 0.037) was an indicator of mortality risk.Patients with NVAF and CHA2DS2-VASc scores of 0-1 had independent risk factors for stroke in the form of LAD, D-dimer, and NT-proBNP. Notably, in low-risk NVAF patients with stroke, NT-proBNP was discovered to be a potent predictor of in-hospital death.

Background: The role of soluble interleukin-1 receptor type 2 (sIL-1R2) in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains undocumented. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the possible associations of sIL-1R2 with left ventricular (LV) function, remodeling and future clinical events in the setting of AMI. Methods: Circulating sIL-1R2 levels were quantified after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) on day 1 of hospital admission for 204 AMI patients, and upon enrollment of 204 healthy controls. Echocardiography was conducted in the acute phase and at 12-month follow-up. Adverse clinical events were registered after 12 months. Results: Circulating sIL-1R2 levels were significantly higher in AMI patients than in healthy controls (medians respectively 6652.81 pg/mL, 3799.13 pg/mL, p < 0.0001). AMI patients with sIL-1R2 levels less than the median had a larger proportion of worsened LV ejection fraction [a decrease in LV ejection fraction (LVEF) of more than 10% units] and reduced LVEF (a final LVEF < 50%). After multivariate adjustment, sIL-1R2 levels less than the median were associated with an increased risk of worsened LVEF [odds ratio (OR): 3.7, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.6-8.5, p = 0.002] and reduced LVEF at 12 months (OR: 2.1, 95% CI: 1.1-4.3, p = 0.035). Moreover, low sIL-1R2 levels were associated with an increased risk of having an adverse clinical event during the first 12 months after AMI [hazard ratio (HR): 2.5, 95% CI: 1.0-6.1, p = 0.039]. Conclusions: Low levels of circulating sIL-1R2 were associated with impaired recovery of LV function and adverse clinical outcomes in AMI patients. These findings might contribute to understanding the important role of sIL-1R2 in postinfarction inflammation.

In recent years, with the further research on probiotics, probiotics may become an indispensable part in the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC) in the future. As one of the most common cancer, the incidence of CRC is still rising in developing countries. Nowadays, there are lacking in prevention methods with low side effect. Surgery and chemotherapy, as the main treatment of CRC, bring many complications and affect the quality of life of patients. Probiotics has provided new ideas to solve these problems. Probiotics have anti-inflammatory, immune-enhancing, tumor-suppressing and other beneficial effects. Probiotics may provide some safe and effective prevention strategies for CRC. In addition, probiotics can also reduce the complications of surgery and chemotherapy, and improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Target administration with probiotics or probiotics cooperated with TRAIL to treat CRC. This article aims to review the mechanisms of probiotics for the prevention and treatment of CRC, as well as specific ways to use probiotics, in order to provide more new strategies for the prevention and treatment of CRC in the future, and reduce the incidence of and improve the quality of life of patients.

OBJECTIVE: Anemia is common and harmful in patients undergoing colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery. Blood transfusion (BT) is used to treat anemia, but results in a poor oncology prognosis. Iron supplementation may be effective in improving anemia and reducing the need for BT, however, the results remain controversial. This meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of iron supplementation in improving hemoglobin concentrations (Hb) and reducing the need for BT. METHODS: Up to February 10, 2021, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase databases were searched for studies evaluating the effects of iron supplementation on CRC surgery patients. Meta-analysis was conduct using the random-effects model. RESULTS: Seven trials with 879 participants in total were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled findings suggested that iron supplementation effectively increased Hb (MD 0.41; 95% CI: 0.12, 0.69, P = 0.006) and reduced the risk of BT (RR 0.60, 95% CI 0.45, 0.78, P = 0.0002) compared with the control group. In addition, subgroup analyses showed that these benefits were observed with both oral and intravenous iron supplementation. CONCLUSION: Iron supplementation is effective in ameliorating anemia and reducing the need for BT in CRC surgery patients.

The rapid and widespread global pandemic of 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has had unprecedented negative health and economic impacts. Immune responses play a key role in the development of COVID-19, including the disruption of immune balance and cytokine storms caused by excessive inflammatory responses. Due to the effects of cancer itself and treatment, patients often accompanied by immunosuppression appear to be a susceptible population for COVID-19. Worryingly, COVID-19 with cancer is associated with a poor prognosis. Cancer patients are a vulnerable group, threatened by COVID-19, finding a way to combat COVID-19 for them is urgent. Immunonutrition is closely related to balance and strong immune function. Supplementary immunonutrition can improve the immune function and inflammatory response of cancer patients after surgery, which provides evidence for the role of immunonutrition in combating COVID-19. We reviewed possible mechanisms of immunonutrition against COVID-19, including enhancing immune cell function, increasing immune cell count, ameliorating excessive inflammatory response, and regulating gut microbiota. Immunonutrition supplementation in cancer patients may be beneficial to enhance immune function in the early stage of COVID-19 infection and control excessive inflammatory response in the late stage. Therefore, immunonutrition is a potential strategy for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 in cancer.

As the effectiveness of glutamine supplementation for oral mucositis (OM) in patients with cancer remains controversial, a comprehensive summary and analysis of available evidence is necessary. The aim of the present meta-analysis was to evaluate the benefits of glutamine supplementation on OM and OM-related adverse reactions in patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy (CT) and/or radiotherapy (RT), using data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched for RCTs on the use of glutamine for treating OM, published until September 11, 2020. Risk ratios (RRs) or standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using RevMan 5.3. Fifteen studies with 988 participants were included. Glutamine did not reduce the incidence of OM (RR 0.94), but it reduced the severity of OM (SMD -0.73) and incidence of severe OM (RR 0.41). Additionally, glutamine reduced the incidence of opioid analgesic use (RR 0.84), feeding tube use (RR 0.46), hospitalization (RR 0.39), and treatment interruption (RR 0.49) caused by OM. Glutamine effectively improved OM and reduced OM-related adverse reactions in patients with cancer receiving CT and/or RT.

OBJECTIVE: Postoperative infection of hepatopancreatobiliary cancer (HPBC) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Probiotics and synbiotics are potential prevention strategies, but evidence on the efficacy of probiotics or synbiotics in the prevention of postoperative infection for HPBC remains controversial. This study aimed to define the impact of probiotics or synbiotics on the incidence of postoperative infection in HPBC patients. METHODS: A systematic search of the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases was conducted from inception to February 2, 2021 to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy of probiotics or synbiotics in HPBC. Data were pooled and expressed as the risk ratio (RR) and mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: Eight RCTs involving 445 participants were included. Supplementation with probiotics or synbiotics significantly reduced the incidence of postoperative infection (RR 0.55) in HPBC patients, and both probiotics (RR 0.68) and synbiotics (RR 0.41) were effective in reducing the incidence of postoperative infection. In addition, probiotics or synbiotics can reduce duration of antibiotic use (MD -3.52) and length of hospital stay (MD -4.21). CONCLUSION: Probiotics or synbiotics are effective strategies for the prevention of postoperative infection in HPBC patients.

RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the pregnancy outcomes of IVF vitrified-warmed embryo transfer (IVF-FET) carried out in a clinical setting located at an altitude of 3650 m in Tibet, China? DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of 238 infertility couples (n = 344 treatment cycles) who underwent FET treatment at the Xizang Fukang Hospital, Tibet. The overall clinical pregnancy rate, implantation rate, live birth rate, miscarriage rate and ectopic pregnancy rate were statistically analysed. Women were categorized into two groups based on age: 35 years or younger (n = 265 cycles) and over 35 years (n = 79 cycles). The general characteristics and pregnancy outcomes were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The clinical pregnancy rate, implantation rate, live birth rate, miscarriage rate, and ectopic pregnancy rate of the 344 FET cycles were 43.02%, 30.90%, 35.17%, 18.24% and 1.35%, respectively. The clinical pregnancy rate (46.04% versus 32.91%), implantation rate (33.92% versus 21.01%) and live birth rate (38.11% versus 25.32%) in the group aged 35 years or younger were significantly greater than those in the group aged over 35 years (P = 0.039, P = 0.004, P = 0.037). The miscarriage rate (17.21% versus 23.08%) and ectopic pregnancy rate (0.82% versus 3.85%) were not significantly different in the two groups. CONCLUSION: A live birth rate of 35.17% can be achieved with IVF-FET in high-altitude areas (3650 m above sea level). Maternal age is still an important determinant of clinical pregnancy rate, implantation rate, and live birth rate of infertile patients in high-altitude areas.

OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis was to assess the effect of fish oil supplementation on inflammation markers in adult patients receiving hemodialysis. METHODS: CENTRAL, EMBASE, MEDLINE databases were searched from inception to 10 April 2020. Two authors independently searched, selected, and screened the literature. The pooled results are represented by WMD or SMD with 95% confidence intervals. Subgroup analysis and meta-regression were used to explore sources of heterogeneity, and sensitivity analysis was used to assess the robustness of the pooled results. Funnel plots were used to assess publication bias. RESULTS: Eleven RCT (randomized control trials) studies were included. The pooled results showed that fish oil supplementation caused a significant reduction of the CRP(C-reactive protein) level (random model: WMD, -3.36, 95%CI: -5.46 to -1.26, P = .002), especially in patients with baseline CRP ≥ 5 mg/L (random model: WMD, -4.43, 95%CI: -6.10 to -2.76, P = .00001, I2  = 41%). Meta-regression analyses showed that CRP baseline level (CRP < 5 mg/L) was the main source of heterogeneity (P = .036). Sensitive analyses revealed that the result was hardly changed. Fish oil supplementation might not reduce the level of IL-6 (random model: WMD, -2.26, 95%CI: -19.61 to 15.09, P = .80) in four studies or the level of TNF-α (random model: SMD, -2.51, 95%CI: -6.08 to 1.06, P = .17) in three studies. CONCLUSIONS: Fish oil supplementation could reduce the level of CRP in hemodialysis patients, especially in patients with CRP ≥ 5 mg/L, but had no effects on IL-6 and TNF-α.

Pb- or Sn-based halide perovskites usually exhibit poor thermoelectric performance, arising from their low electrical conductivity or oxidation state instability. It is highly desired to search for new halide perovskites with good thermoelectric properties. In this work, the thermally stable mixed-valence halide perovskite Cs2Au(I)Au(III)I6 is revealed to be a highly promising thermoelectric material with high in-plane power factor and ultralow lattice thermal conductivity using first-principles calculations. The high in-plane power factor is achieved due to the novel two-dimensional electronic structure near the Fermi level driven by the weak interaction between AuI-5d and I-p orbitals. In addition, the small group velocities and short phonon lifetimes give rise to ultralow lattice thermal conductivity in Cs2Au(I)Au(III)I6. These excellent electronic and thermal properties lead to a high ZT value, which is close to 1 at 300 K and ∼4 at 800 K. Our results suggest that the 2D electronic structure from the weak interaction between d and p crystal orbitals is a promising route to design high-efficiency halide double perovskite thermoelectric materials.

This study compared the toxicity mechanisms of four X-ray-based iodinated contrast media (ICM) on Escherichia coli (E. coli) and yeast microarray assays, aiming to determine the diverse toxicity mechanisms among different exposed organisms and the relationship between toxicity and their physical and chemical characteristics. The conventional phenotypic endpoint cytotoxicity and the change in reactive oxygen species (ROS) level were employed in conjunction with toxicogenomics to quantify changes in the gene/protein biomarker level in the regulation of different damage/repair pathways. The results showed that molecular toxicity endpoints, named transcriptional effect level index (TELI) and protein effect level index (PELI) for E. coli and yeast, respectively, correlated well with the phenotypic endpoints. Temporal altered gene/protein expression profiles revealed dynamic and complex damage/toxic mechanisms. In particular, compared with E. coli cells, yeast cells exposed to ICM exhibited significantly higher stress intensity and diverse stress types, resulting in stress or damage to the organism. The toxic mechanisms of ICM are concentration/property-dependent and relevant to the cellular structure and defense systems in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. In particular, the toxicity of ionic ICM is higher than that of non-ionic ICM, and eukaryotes are more susceptible than prokaryotes to ICM exposure.
