RESUMO

Developing a convenient method to efficiently determine the size of nanoplastics in the environment is urgent in terms of ecological or human health protection. In this work, a novel strategy for discriminating the size of polystyrene (PS)-based nanoplastics was reported via regulating the radiative transition efficiency of NH2-UIO-66 (NU) with benzoic acid (BA) as the auxiliary ligand. The elaborately doped BA capped the defect sites and triggered nonradiative transition efficiency of NU. As a result, the formed composite (denoted as BA-NU) was more sensitive to interaction among neighboring NU and nanoplastics. The interaction between particles limited the rotation and vibration of the benzene ring within the BA-NU molecule, thus increasing the BA-NU fluorescence. The sensitivity of BA-NU on nanoplastics was well controlled by manipulating the doping contents of BA, leading to precisely tunable physicochemical properties for this structure. Deriving from the exquisitely designed nanostructures, the composite of BA-NU was successfully used to discriminate different size PS as an ultrasensitive turn-on probe. This work highlights the possibility of boosting the detection performance by regulating the main structure with guest molecules at the molecular level.

RESUMO

Four undescribed sesquiterpenes, atramacrolodes A-D (1-4), along with six known compounds 5-10 were isolated from the rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala. Compound 3 possessed a new skeleton based on an unprecedented carton-carton connection. Their structures were determined by UV, IR, HRESIMS, NMR spectra, 13C NMR calculation with DP4+ analysis, and the comparison of experimental and calculated ECD spectra. Compounds 5 and 8 showed protective effects against paracetamol-induced liver cell injury.

RESUMO

Detecting hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is important for human health and environmental protection due to its high toxicity, carcinogenicity and persistence, but developing a sensor to selectively detect Cr(VI) remains challenging. Here, we proposed a selective fluorescent sensor for Cr(VI) detection using cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) modified N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs-CTAC) synthesized via a post-modification strategy. Specifically, the introduced CTAC molecules could self-assemble into micelles for encapsulating fluorescent N-CDs, causing the aggregation of N-CD particles and then displaying enhanced fluorescence emission owing to the aggregation-induced emission effect. Moreover, the positively charged CTAC can interact with negatively charged Cr(VI) in the form of an anion (Cr2O72-), boosting the ability of the selective recognition of Cr(VI). Thus, a N-CDs-CTAC fluorescent probe was designed to selectively monitor Cr(VI) with an ultralow detection limit down to 40 nM, and was further used for Cr(VI) detection in real environmental samples. The fluorescence quenching mechanism of N-CDs-CTAC by Cr(VI) was attributed to dynamic quenching. The proposed assay opens an avenue for the selective detection of Cr(VI) in the environmental monitoring field.

RESUMO

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) may exert adverse effects on human and ecosystem health. However, as an ecologically fragile zone with strong interaction between river and groundwater, the POPs pollution in the riparian zone has received little attention. The goal of this research is to examine the concentrations, spatial distribution, potential ecological risks, and biological effects of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the riparian groundwater of the Beiluo River, China. The results showed that the pollution level and ecological risk of OCPs in riparian groundwater of the Beiluo River were higher than PCBs. The presence of PCBs (Penta-CBs, Hexa-CBs) and CHLs, respectively, may have reduced the richness of bacteria (Firmicutes) and fungi (Ascomycota). Furthermore, the richness and Shannon's diversity index of algae (Chrysophyceae and Bacillariophyta) decreased, which could be linked to the presence of OCPs (DDTs, CHLs, DRINs), and PCBs (Penta-CBs, Hepta-CBs), while for metazoans (Arthropoda) the tendency was reversed, presumably as a result of SULPHs pollution. In the network analysis, core species belonging to bacteria (Proteobacteria), fungi (Ascomycota), and algae (Bacillariophyta) played essential roles in maintaining community function. Burkholderiaceae and Bradyrhizobium can be considered biological indicators of PCBs pollution in the Beiluo River. Note that the core species of interaction network, playing a fundamental role in community interactions, are strongly affected by POPs pollutants. This work provides insights into the functions of multitrophic biological communities in maintaining the stability of riparian ecosystems through the response of core species to riparian groundwater POPs contamination.

RESUMO

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal areas severely affected the health of ecosystem and human beings. The HABs control by biological methods, especially for biofilms, has been research hotspots in freshwater ecosystem. However, the biofilm-relating control of HABs in marine environment was very limited. In the present study, we found the population growth of two harmful algal species, Prorocentrum obtusidens Schiller (formerly P. donghaiense Lu) and Heterosigma akashiwo, were inhibited by a diatom-bacteria biofilm. The highest inhibitory rate was 79.6 ± 2.1% for P. obtusidens when co-cultured with biofilm suspension, and was 88.6 ± 5.8% for H. akashiwo when co-cultured with the biofilm filtrate without nutrient replenishment. When nitrate and phosphate were added, the inhibition rate for P. obtusidens was 72.3 ± 2.0%, but the population inhibition was not found in H. akashiwo. It suggested that P. obtusidens was mainly inhibited via interference competition, while the inhibition of H. akashiwo was resulted from exploitation competition. We further investigated the role of fatty acids for the interference competition in P. obtusidens, and found that fatty acids at their environmental-relevance concentrations can inhibit the photosynthetic capacity of P. obtusidens, but cannot inhibit the population growth. The community of biofilm shifted, and was finally dominated by the photoheterotrophic bacterium Dinoroseobacter shibae, and the diatom Fistulifera sp. with relative abundance of higher than 90%. Our study indicated that the diatom-bacteria biofilm was likely the candidate for the HABs control in marine environment. D. shibae and Fistulifera sp. were probably the effective species in the biofilm.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: China's medical insurance schemes and poverty alleviation policy at this stage have achieved population-wide coverage and the system's universal function. At the late stage of the elimination of absolute poverty task, how to further exert the poverty alleviation function of the medical insurance schemes has become an important agenda for targeted poverty alleviation. To analyse the risk of catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) occurrence in middle-aged and older adults with vulnerability characteristics from the perspectives of social, regional, disease, health service utilization and medical insurance schemes. METHODS: We used data from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) database and came up with 9190 samples. The method for calculating the CHE was adopted from WHO. Logistic regression was used to determine the different characteristics of middle-aged and older adults with a high probability of incurring CHE. RESULTS: The overall regional poverty rate and incidence of CHE were similar in the east, central and west, but with significant differences among provinces. The population insured by the urban and rural integrated medical insurance (URRMI) had the highest incidence of CHE (21.17%) and health expenditure burden (22.77%) among the insured population. Integration of Medicare as a medical insurance scheme with broader benefit coverage did not have a significant effect on the incidence of CHE in middle-aged and older people with vulnerability characteristics. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the perspective of Medicare improvement, we conducted an in-depth exploration of the synergistic effect of medical insurance and the poverty alleviation system in reducing poverty, and we hope that through comprehensive strategic adjustments and multidimensional system cooperation, we can lift the vulnerable middle-aged and older adults out of poverty.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The treatment strategies for Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) are usually based on the risk stratification system. However, few risk signatures which integrate the revised international prognostic scoring system (IPSS-R) with gene mutations can be easily applied in the real world. METHODS: The training cohort of 63 MDS patients was conducted at Zhongda Hospital of Southeast University from January 2013 to April 2020. The validation cohort of 141 MDS patients was obtained from GSE129828. The mutation scoring system was based on the number of mutations and a unique favorable prognostic factor, which is SF3B1 mutation. Univariate Cox, multivariate Cox, and LASSO regression analyses were used to determine the significant factors that influenced the overall survival. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to evaluate the efficiency of the prognostic model. RESULTS: A novel risk scoring system we named "mutation combined with revised international prognostic scoring system (MIPSS-R)" was developed based on the results derived from multivariate analysis which assigned points to the IPSS-R and the mutation scores according to their relative statistical weight. Based on the quintile of the new scores, patients were divided into five risk levels. The Kaplan-Meier curves showed the superiority of MIPSS-R in separating patients from different groups, comparing with IPSS-R both in the training cohort (p = 1.71e-08 vs. p = 1.363e-04) and validation cohort (p = 1.788e-04 vs. p = 2.757e-03). The area under the ROC of MIPSS-R was 0.79 in the training cohort and 0.62 in the validation cohort. The retrospective analysis of our house patients showed that the risk levels of 57.41% of patients would adjust according to MIPSS-R. After changing risk levels, 38.71% of patients would benefit from treatment strategies that MIPSS-R recommends. CONCLUSION: A mutation scoring system was conducted based on the number of mutations and a unique favorable prognostic factor. MIPSS-R, the novel integral risk stratification system was developed by integrating IPSS-R and the mutation scores, which is more effective on prognosis and treatment guidance for MDS patients.

RESUMO

Atmospheric aerosols can change vegetation photosynthesis through the effects of aerosols on radiation, which will affect the peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality at global scales. In this study, we quantify the aerosol-induced direct radiation forcing (ADRF) in China from 2001 to 2014 based on the radiation flux simulation used by the Fu-Liou radiation transfer model under with-aerosols and no-aerosols scenarios. Using the radiation simulation results, we modify the atmospheric forcing datasets to drive Community Land Model 4.5 (CLM4.5) to gain the changes in carbon fluxes in China caused by ADRF. The results show that these two models are accurate in estimating radiation (R2 = 0.78-0.88) and carbon fluxes (R2 = 0.73-0.75) in China. High levels of ADRFs were captured in China, especially with increasing diffuse fraction, resulting in the diffusing fertilization effect occurring in most areas of China. The ADRF can increase cumulative gross primary productivity (GPP) and total ecosystem respiration (ER) by 3.20 gC m-2 and 5.13 gC m-2 per year, respectively. From 2001 to 2014, the diffusing fertilization effects experienced trends of increasing first and then decreasing. However, ADRFs in some regions of China show negative effects on carbon fluxes due to vulnerable vegetation functional types and high aerosol loading. The ADRF will also enable soil temperature decreases and volumetric soil water increases, which is closely related to changes in carbon fluxes. Meanwhile, due to changes in soil water and heat conditions, N2O and CH4 production will also be disturbed, and ADRF increases the global warming potential (GWP) for both greenhouse gases. This phenomenon indicated that atmospheric aerosol pollution control is far-reaching significance for peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030.

RESUMO

Perinereis aibuhitensis was used to assess adverse biological effects caused by acute and chronic Pb²âº exposure in artificial seawater under controlled laboratory conditions. In 96-hr acute toxicity experiments, the morphological changes showed a positive time/dose-dependent tendency, and the 96-hr LC50 value of Pb²âº was 686.41 mg/L. The responses of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants in tissues including catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), malondialdehyde (MDA) and the content of total soluble protein (TSP), were investigated on days 1, 4, 7 and 10 after Pb²âº exposure under chronic toxicity testing. Results showed that the activation of the antioxidant system in P. aibuhitensis depended on the Pb²âº concentration and the duration of exposure time. Specifically, POD and SOD activities were induced on the first day of the exposure and decreased to the control level on day 10 after exposure. Therefore, these two indexes could be used to indicate oxidative stress associated with P. aibuhitensis exposure to Pb²âº.

RESUMO

River ecosystems currently face a significant threat of degradation and loss of biodiversity resulting from continuous emissions of persistent organic pollutants and human activities. In this study, multi-trophic communities were assessed using DNA metabarcoding in a relatively stable riverine sediment compartment to investigate the biodiversity dynamics in the Beiluo River, followed by an evaluation of their response to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and land use changes. A total of 48 bacterial phyla, 4 fungal phyla, 4 protist phyla, 9 algal phyla, 31 metazoan phyla, and 12 orders of fish were identified. The total concentration of PAHs in the Beiluo River sediments ranged from 25.95 to 1141.35 ng/g, with low molecular weight PAHs constituting the highest proportion (68.67%), followed by medium (22.19%) and high (9.14%) molecular weight PAHs. Notably, in contrast to lower trophic level aquatic communities such as bacteria, algae, and metazoans, PAHs exhibited a significant inhibitory effect on fish. Furthermore, the diversity of aquatic communities displayed obvious heterogeneity across distinct land use groups. A high proportion of cultivated land reduced the biodiversity of fish communities but increased that of metazoans. Conversely, an elevated proportion of built-up land reduced metazoan biodiversity, while simultaneously enhancing that of fungi and bacteria. Generally, land use changes exert both indirect and direct effects on aquatic communities. The direct effects primarily influence the abundance of aquatic communities rather than their diversity. Nevertheless, PAHs pollution may have limited potential to disrupt community structures through complex species interactions, as the hub species identified in the co-occurrence network did not align with those significantly affected by PAHs. This study indicates the potential of PAHs and land use changes to cause biodiversity losses. However, it also highlights the possibility of mitigating these negative effects in riverine sediments through optimal land use management and the promotion of enhanced species interactions.

RESUMO

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are emerging contaminants that pose a threat to the biodiversity of the Beiluo River, a polluted watercourse on the Loess Plateau impacted by diverse human activities. However, the occurrence, spatial distribution, and substitution characteristics of PFASs in this region remain unclear. This study aimed to unravel PFAS distribution patterns and their impact on the aquatic ecosystems of the Beiluo River Basin. The total PFAS concentration in the area ranged from 16.64-35.70 ng/L, with predominantly perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) and perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs), collectively contributing 94%. The Mantel test revealed threats to aquatic communities from both legacy long-chain (perfluorooctanoic acid and sodium perfluorooctane sulfonic acid) and emerging (6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid, 2-Perfluorohexyl ethanoic acid, and hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (Gen-X)) PFSAs. The canonical correspondence analysis ordination indicated that trace quantities of emerging PFASs, specifically 2-Perfluorohexyl ethanoic acid and hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (Gen-X), significantly influenced geographical variations in aquatic communities. In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of comprehensively exploring the ecological implications and potential risks associated with PFASs in the Beiluo River Basin.

RESUMO

Tiandong is a vital traditional Chinese herbal medicine. It is derived from the tuber root of the Asparagus cochinchinensis according to the Pharmacopoeia of the people's republic of China (2020 Edition). On account of the similar morphology, Asparagus meioclados and Asparagus munitus were used as Tian-Dong in southwest China. Chloroplast (cp) genomes are highly active genetic components of plants and play an extremely important role in improving the efficiency of the identification of plant species. To differentiate the medicinal plants belonging to the genus Asparagus, we sequenced and analyzed the complete plastomes (plastid genomes) of A. meioclados and A. munitus and obtained two plastomes whose length changed to 156,515 bp and 156,381 bp, respectively. A total of 111 unique genes have been detected in plastome, which included 78 protein-coding genes, 29 tRNA genes and 4 rRNA genes. In plastomes of A. meioclados and A. munitus, 14,685 and 14,987 codons were detected, among which 9942 and 10,207 had the relative synonymous codon usage (RSCU) values higher than 1, respectively. A. meioclados and A. munitus have 26 SSRs patterns, among which A. meioclados was 25 and A. munitus 21. The average Ka/Ks value was 0.36, and positive selection was detected in genes of the photosynthetic system (ndhF and rbcL) in Asparagus species. To perform the comparative analysis of plastomes, the two newly sequenced plastomes of the A. meioclados and A. munitus species were compared with that of A. cochinchinensis, and 12 hotspots, including 5 coding regions and 7 inter-genomic regions, were identified. Based on the whole plastome of Asparagus, 2 divergent hotspots (accD and rpl32-trnL-UAG) and 1 international barcode fragment (rbcL) were screened, which may be used as particular molecular markers for the identification of Asparagus species. In addition, we determined the phylogenetic relationship between A. meioclados and A. munitus in the genus Asparagus. This study enriches our knowledge of the molecular evolutionary relationships of the Asparagus genus and provides treasured data records for species identification, molecular breeding, and evolutionary analysis of this genus.

RESUMO

The distribution and source of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) pollution in the Beiluo River, the secondary tributary of the Yellow River, still remain unclear. With the purpose of determining the distribution, origins, and pollution levels of PCBs and their consequences on ecological risks, the concentrations of 27 PCBs at 17 locations in the sediments of the Beiluo River were examined in this study. The results showed that the mass concentrations of ∑PCBs in the sediment ranged from 0.12 to 1.25 ng∙g-1 (DW), with the highest point at sampling site B13 downstream of the river. Compared to most river sediments, both domestically and internationally, the concentration of PCBs in the sediment of the Beiluo River was at a low level, with 10-PCB and 6-PCB as the main components, indicating that the PCBs that are difficult to volatilise and degrade are more likely to remain in the sediment. The origins of PCBs in the sediments of the Beiluo River were examined by using positive matrix factorisation (PMF). The results revealed that the contamination of PCBs in the sediments of the Beiluo River mainly resulted from industrial emissions, technical PCB mixtures, and coal and wood combustion. The results of the ecological risk assessment indicated that PCBs in the sediments of the study area rarely contribute to adverse biological effects and the potential low risk to the environment.

RESUMO

The presence of an excessive amount of lead iodide on the surface of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is a significant contributing factor that adversely affects the stability of these devices when exposed to continuous light. To address this issue, we developed an effective strategy involving polishing PbI2 on a perovskite surface using CsF. In this study, we investigated the effects of CsF post-treatment on perovskite films and their photovoltaic properties. The results of the time-resolved photoluminescence and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy tests reveal the significant positive impact of our passivation method based on CsF, which reduces the valence band offset between the perovskite and hole transport layers while simultaneously enhancing the carrier interface transport. PSCs treated with CsF exhibited a photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.25% and an increased fill factor (FF) of 81.72%, which surpassed those of the original PSCs (PCE = 22.12% and FF = 77.40%). Furthermore, after aging for over 2500 h at room temperature and in 30 ± 10% humidity, the PCE of the unpacked PSCs reduced to only 42% of the initial value. Furthermore, the devices treated with CsF maintained their impressive performance, with the PCE maintaining optimal levels at 91% of the initial efficiency.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer (BC) is a malignant disease that occurs worldwide and poses serious health burden. OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of BC burden in the Western Pacific region (WPR) from 1990 to 2019, and to predict trends from 2020 to 2044. To analyze the driving factors and put forward the region-oriented improvement. METHODS: Based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, BC cases, deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) cases, age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized death rate (ASDR), and age-standardized DALYs rate in WPR from 1990 to 2019 was obtained and analysed. Age-period-cohort (APC) model was used to analyze age, period, and cohort effects in BC, and Bayesian APC (BAPC) was used to predict trends over the next 25 years. RESULTS: In conclusion, BC incidence and deaths in the WPR have increased rapidly over the past 30 years and are expected to continue to increase between 2020 and 2044. Among behavioral and metabolic factors, high body-mass index was the main risk factor for BC mortality in middle-income countries, whereas alcohol use was the main risk factor in Japan. Age is a key factor in the development of BC, with 40 years being the critical point. Incidence trends coincide with the course of economic development. CONCLUSIONS: The BC burden remains an essential public health issue in the WPR and will increase substantially in the future. More efforts should be made in middle-income countries to prompt the health behavior and minimize the burden of BC because these nations accounts for the majority of BC burden in the WPR.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Light at night (LAN) is a physiological environmental factor related to thyroid cancer (TC). The spatial relationship between the number of TC incident cases, LAN, air pollution and other macro social factors and stationarity needs to be further examined to provide evidence for regional control of TC. METHODS: Spatial econometrics methods for spatial nonstationarity were used to explore the impacts of LAN, air pollutants, economic factors, and population size on the number of TC incident cases in 182 Chinese prefecture-level cities and the local coefficients were further tested for nonstationarity. Temporally weighted regression (TWR), geographically weighted regression (GWR), and geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) were compared in this study for model selection. RESULTS: Based on the ordinary least squares (OLS), LAN, air pollutants, and urbanization all significantly affected the number of TC incident cases. GWR had the best goodness of fit, and the coefficients of all the variables passed the nonstationarity test. The strong positive impact of LAN was mainly concentrated in North China, air pollutants in Central China and neighboring regions, and urbanization in the eastern coast of China. CONCLUSIONS: The locational factors of the prefecture-level city influence the spatial pattern of the number of TC incident cases. Governments should pay attention to this influence, adhere to the Health in All Policies principle, and formulate region-specific policies based on regional characteristics, which this study provides updated evidence for.

RESUMO

Pravastatin, used for lowering cholesterol and further decreasing blood lipid, has been frequently detected in the contaminated freshwaters, whereas its long-term exposure effects on non-target aquatic invertebrates remains undetermined. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the toxic effects of pravastatin (PRA) with the concentration gradients (0, 0.5, 50, 5000 µg/L) on a model water flea Daphnia magna (D. magna) over 21 d based on phenotypic and genome-wide transcriptomic analyses. After 21 d, exposure to PRA at 5000 µg/L significantly reduced the body length and increased the number of offspring. The 76, 167, and 499 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by using absolute log2 fold change < 1 and adj p < 0.05 as a cutoff in the 0.5, 50, and 5000 µg/L PRA treatment groups, respectively. Three pathways, including xenobiotic metabolism, insect hormone biosynthesis pathway, and energy metabolism were significantly (p < 0.05) enriched after exposure to PRA. These suggested that the upregulation of genes in insect biosynthetic hormone pathway increased the juvenile hormone III content, which further reduced the body length of D. magna. The positive effect of methyl farnesoate synthesis on the ovarian may result in the increased number of offspring. Furthermore, energy tended to be allocated to detoxification process and survival under stress conditions, as the amount of energy that an individual can invest in maintenance and growth is limited. Taken together, our results unraveled the toxic mechanism of cardiovascular and lipid pharmaceuticals in aquatic invertebrate.

RESUMO

Riparian zone, an important land-water interface, plays an essential role in maintaining the ecological health of rivers, whereas the effects of Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the health of biological communities in riparian groundwater remain undetermined. To understand the responses of multiple communities to environmental variables, the distribution and ecosystem risk of 16 PAHs have been investigated in the Beiluo River, China. The distribution of multiple communities in riparian groundwater was investigated by environmental DNA metabarcoding, including 16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, and COI gene sequencing for bacteria, microbial eukaryotes (including algae, fungi, and protozoa), and metazoan, respectively, followed by correlation analysis between multiple communities and PAH contamination levels. The concentration of PAHs in the Beiluo River ranged largely from 35.32 to 728.59 ng/L. Here, the Shannon's diversity index of bacteria (Firmicutes) decreased possibly due to the occurrence of Pyrene, which mainly derives from coal and biomass combustion. Furthermore, the reduced richness of fungi (Ascomycota, Basidiomycota) and algae (Chlorophyta, Chrysophyceae) can be attributed to the presence of medium molecular weight (MMW) PAHs (Pyrene, Benz(a)anthracene, Chrysene), and low molecular weight (LMW) PAHs (Naphthalene, Fluorene, Phenanthrene). The richness and Shannon's diversity index of metazoan (Arthropoda) were promoted owing to MMW PAHs (Chrysene, Fluoranthene) generated from coal and biomass combustion and traffic emission. The ecological risk of PAHs in the groundwater environment of the Beiluo River was characterized as low to medium, where LMW and MMW PAHs posed higher risk than the high molecular weight (HMW) compounds. Overall, this study provides insights into the structures of riparian multi-biological communities altered by PAHs.

RESUMO

The widespread application of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) has raised concerns over the adverse effects on aquatic species. In this study, transcriptomic analysis was applied to evaluate the chronic toxicity of ZnO NPs on the freshwater invertebrate Daphnia magna and the intergenerational effects were then further investigated. Parent daphnia (F0) were exposed to ZnO NPs at 3, 60, and 300 µg L-1 for 21 days. ZnO NPs significantly inhibited the reproduction (first pregnancy and spawning time, total number of offspring) and growth (molting frequency and body length) of F0. Here, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved in lysosomal and phagosome, energy metabolism and endocrine disruption pathways were significantly downregulated. Furthermore, disruption on the transport and catabolic processes probably resulted in the particle accumulation. The inhibited pathways related to energy metabolism may partially account for the body length, molting and reproductive restriction. The suppression of growth and reproduction may attribute to the down-regulation of insulin secretion and ovarian steroidogenesis pathways, respectively. Partial recovery of growth and reproductive inhibition in F1 - F3 descended from the F0 generation exposure did not support constant transgenerational effects. This study unravels the molecular mechanisms and transgenerational consequences of the toxicity of nanoparticles on Daphnia.

RESUMO

Several air pollution episodes occurred in China in the past decade, and high levels of aerosols load also caused the changes of radiation, which could further influence the gross primary productivity (GPP) in the terrestrial ecosystem. This paper focuses on the spatiotemporal variations and relationship of aerosol-radiation-GPP in China during a heavy pollution period (2001-2014). For this purpose, the Fu-Liou radiation transfer mechanism model was used to estimate total radiation (TR) and diffuse radiation (DIFR) at the spatial resolution of 1° × 1° based on the satellite aerosol optical depth (AOD) and other auxiliary data. This model shows excellent performance with an R2 of 0.88 and 0.79 for TR and DIFR, respectively. A significant increasing trend (0.23 W m-2 year-1) in TR was found in China in this phase, and it was mainly attributed to DIFR. Furthermore, a scenario without aerosols (AOD = 0) was simulated as a comparison to quantify the aerosol radiative forcing, which indicated that aerosols play a catalytic role in DIFR, increasing it by approximately 19.55%. Despite all this, aerosols have weakened the brightening of China due to the negative forcing on direct radiation. Meanwhile, 0.65-4.20 kgC m-2 year-1 increase of GPP was also captured in seven regions of China during this phase. However, the significant negative response of GPP to aerosol was found in most ecosystems in the growing season of vegetation, and the highest correlation of -0.76 (p < .01) existed in the central China forest regions. It suggests although aerosol causes a diffuse fertilization effect, GPP is still lost due to high levels of aerosol load in most areas of China during growing season of vegetation. This paper aims to determine the relationship among the aerosol-radiation-ecosystem productivity in different regions of China, which could provide a reference for the divisional strategy formulation and classification management in different ecosystems.
