RESUMO

The idea of decoupling "environmental bads" from "economic goods" has been proposed as a path towards sustainability by organizations such as the OECD and UN. Scientific consensus reports on environmental impacts (e.g., greenhouse gas emissions) and resource use give an indication of the kind of decoupling needed for ecological sustainability: global, absolute, fast-enough and long-enough. This goal gives grounds for a categorisation of the different kinds of decoupling, with regard to their relevance. We conducted a survey of recent (1990-2019) research on decoupling on Web of Science and reviewed the results in the research according to the categorisation. The reviewed 179 articles contain evidence of absolute impact decoupling, especially between CO2 (and SOX) emissions and evidence on geographically limited (national level) cases of absolute decoupling of land and blue water use from GDP, but not of economy-wide resource decoupling, neither on national nor international scales. Evidence of the needed absolute global fast-enough decoupling is missing.

RESUMO

The present study was designed to investigate the effects of combined treatment with a serotonin (5-HT)1A receptor agonist, 8-hydroxy-2-(dipropylamino)-tetralin (8-OH-DPAT), and a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, scopolamine, on water maze (WM) navigation. Treatment with either 8-OH-DPAT or scopolamine before daily behavioral training disrupted spatial navigation at medium doses and cue navigation at high doses. Pretraining treatment with a combination of subthreshold doses of 8-OH-DPAT and scopolamine impaired WM spatial and cue navigation, but did not impair the WM performance if the drugs were injected post-training. In trained rats, combined injections of subthreshold doses of 8-OH-DPAT and scopolamine given pretraining did not impair the rats' ability to find the platform in a familiar or in a novel position. The combination of 8-OH-DPAT and scopolamine also disrupted WM navigation in rats with central 5-HT depletion. A combination of a peripheral muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist and 8-OH-DPAT had no effect on WM navigation. These data suggest that combined treatment with drugs blocking muscarinic acetylcholine receptors and activating 5-HT1A receptors greatly impairs WM learning/performance, but does not impair spatial memory per se.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the applicability of SWOT analysis for measuring the quality of public oral health services from the adult client's perspective. METHODS: Data were collected using a structured questionnaire developed in an earlier study. The study group consisted of all adult (over 18 years of age) clients (n = 256) using public municipal oral health services in Kirkkonummi, Finland, during 2 weeks in 1995. Before treatment, patients filled out a questionnaire that measured the importance of their expectations in different aspects of oral care. After the appointment, they filled out a similar questionnaire that measured the enactment of these expectations in the treatment situation. The response rate was 51%. The difference between subjective importance and enactment of expectations was tested by Wilcoxon's signed rank test. Results were interpreted using both a conventional analysis of "expectation enacted or not" and SWOT analysis, which is used in strategic planning to identify areas of strengths (S), weaknesses (W), opportunities (O) and threats (T) in an organisation. RESULTS: In 28 statements out of 35, the two analyses revealed similar interpretations. In most areas the patient-perceived quality of the services was good. Weaknesses were found in the following areas: communicating to patients the causes and risk of developing oral diseases, informing them about different treatment possibilities, and including patients in decision-making when choosing restorative materials. CONCLUSION: SWOT analysis provided more structured interpretation of the results, and can be more easily transferred to development of services.

RESUMO

Transdermal hyoscine (Scopoderm, Ciba-Geigy) has been compared with placebo in 283 female patients. The hyoscine patch had no significant effect on postoperative nausea or vomiting. In contrast with earlier studies, there was no correlation between previous experiences of nausea (motion, pregnancy or surgery related) and nausea caused by the surgery or anaesthetic in this study. No correlation was found between nausea or vomiting and the type of operation.
