INTRODUCTION: To explore the potential impact of 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-HC) on trophoblast cell function in pre-eclampsia. RESULTS: The levels of 27-HC and the expression of CYP27A1 are upregulated in clinical samples of PE. Furthermore, high concentrations of 27-HC can inhibit the invasion and migration ability of trophoblast cells in vitro, and this inhibitory effect is weakened after LXR silencing. In HTR8/SVneo cells treated with 27-HC, the expression of ABCA1/ABCG1 are increased. Finally, we established a mouse model of PE using l-NAME (N-Nitro-l-Arginine Methyl Ester). We found an increase in the levels of 27-HC in the peripheral blood serum of the PE mouse model, and an upregulation of CYP27A1 and LXR expressions in the placenta of the PE mouse model. CONCLUSION: 27-HC inhibits the invasion and migration ability of trophoblast cells by activating the LXR signaling pathway, which is involved in the pathogenesis of Pre-eclampsia(PE).

RESUMO

Sinopodophylli Fructus is a traditional medicine used by the Tibetan people. It is known for its ability to regulate menstruation and promote blood circulation. Presently, bioactive constituents that have been isolated and identified from Sinopodophylli Fructus mainly include 15 lignans(e.g., podophyllotoxin, deoxypodophyllotoxin, and 4'-demethylpodophyllotoxin) and 20 flavonoids(e.g., quercetin, kaempferol, and rutin). These components exhibit pharmacological effects such as anticancer, antibacterial, and lipid-lowering activities. Additionally, Sinopodophylli Fructus contains other components such as proteins, fatty acids, polysaccharides, vitamins, amino acids, and trace elements. According to the relevant literature reports in China and abroad, this article reviewed the chemical constituents and pharmacological effects of Sinopodophylli Fructus, aiming to provide references for the development and rational clinical application of this medicinal resource.

This study aimed to explore the effect of Ganmai Dazao Decoction on the ethology of rats with posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) and study the related mechanism through the changes in magnetic resonance imaging and protein expression. Sixty rats were randomly divided into 6 groups, namely the normal group, the model group, the low(1 g·kg~(-1)), medium(2 g·kg~(-1)), and high-dose Ganmai Dazao Decoction groups(4 g·kg~(-1)), and the positive control group(intragastric administration with 10.8 mg·kg~(-1) of fluoxetine), with 10 rats in each group. Two weeks after inducing PTSD by single-prolonged stress(SPS) in rats, the positive control group was given fluoxetine hydrochloride capsule by gavage, the low, medium, and high-dose groups were given Ganmai Dazao Decoction by gavage, and both the normal group and the model group were given the same volume of normal saline by gavage, each for 7 days. The open field experiment, elevated cross elevated maze, forced swimming experiment, and new object recognition test were carried out for the behavioral test. Three rats in each group were selected to detect the expression of neuropeptide receptor Y1(NPY1R) protein in the hippocampus by Western blot. Then, the other three rats in each group were selected to use the 9.4T magnetic resonance imaging experiment to observe the overall structural changes in the brain region and the anisotropy fraction of the hippocampus. The results of the open field experiment showed that the total distance and central distance of rats in the model group were significantly lower than those in the normal group, and the total distance and central distance of rats in the middle and high-dose Ganmai Dazao Decoction groups were higher than those in the model group. The results of the elevated cross maze test showed that medium and high-dose Ganmai Dazao Decoction remarkably increased the number of open arm entries and the residence time of open arm of rats with PTSD. The results of the forced swimming experiment showed that the immobility time in the water of the model group rats was significantly higher than that of the normal group, and Ganmai Dazao Decoction hugely reduced the immobility time in the water of rats with PTSD. The results of the new object recognition test showed that Ganmai Dazao Decoction significantly increased the exploration time of new objects and familiar objects in rats with PTSD. The results of Western blot showed that Ganmai Dazao Decoction significantly reduced the expression of NYP1R protein in the hippocampus of rats with PTSD. The 9.4T magnetic resonance examination found that there was no significant difference in the structural image among the groups. In the functional image, the fractional anisotropy(FA value) of the hippocampus in the model group was significantly lower than that in the normal group. The FA value of the hippocampus in the middle and high-dose Ganmai Dazao Decoction groups was higher than that in the model group. Ganmai Dazao Decoction reduces the injury of hippocampal neurons by inhibiting the expression of NYP1R in the hippocampus of rats with PTSD, thereby improving the nerve function injury of rats with PTSD and playing a neuroprotective role.

BACKGROUND: Anshen Buxin Liuwei pill (ABLP) is a Mongolian medicinal formula that is composed of six medicinal materials: the Mongolian medicine Bos taurus domesticus Gmelin, Choerospondias axillaris (Roxb.) Burtt et Hill, Myristica fragrans Houtt., Eugenia caryophµllata Thunb., Aucklandia lappa Decne., and Liqui dambar formosana Hance. ABLP is considered to have a therapeutic effect on symptoms such as coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, arrhythmia, depression and irritability, palpitation, and shortness of breath. METHODS: H9c2 cardiomyocytes were used to construct a hypoxia/reoxygenation (HR) injury model. CCK-8 assay and Annexin V-FITC cell apoptosis assays were used for cell viability and cell apoptosis determination. The LDH, SOD, MDA, CAT, CK, GSH-Px, Na+-K+-ATPase, and Ca2+-ATPase activities in cells were determined to assess the protective effects of ABLP. The mRNA levels of Sirtuin3 (Sirt3) and Cytochrome C (Cytc) in H9c2 cells were determined by quantitative real-time PCR. RESULTS: The results indicate that HR-treated cells began to shrink from the spindle in an irregular shape with some floated in the medium. By increasing the therapeutic dose of ABLP (5, 25, and 50 µg/mL), the cells gradually reconverted in a concentration-dependent manner. The release of CK in HR-treated cells was significantly increased, indicating that ABLP exerts a protective effect in H9c2 cells against HR injury and can improve mitochondrial energy metabolism and mitochondrial function integrity. The present study scrutinized the cardioprotective effects of ABLP against HR-induced H9c2 cell injury through antioxidant and mitochondrial pathways. CONCLUSIONS: ABLP could be a promising therapeutic drug for the treatment of myocardial ischemic cardiovascular disease. The results will provide reasonable information for the clinical use of ABLP.

BACKGROUND: Drug repositioning, meanings finding new uses for existing drugs, which can accelerate the processing of new drugs research and development. Various computational methods have been presented to predict novel drug-disease associations for drug repositioning based on similarity measures among drugs and diseases. However, there are some known associations between drugs and diseases that previous studies not utilized. METHODS: In this work, we develop a deep gated recurrent units model to predict potential drug-disease interactions using comprehensive similarity measures and Gaussian interaction profile kernel. More specifically, the similarity measure is used to exploit discriminative feature for drugs based on their chemical fingerprints. Meanwhile, the Gaussian interactions profile kernel is employed to obtain efficient feature of diseases based on known disease-disease associations. Then, a deep gated recurrent units model is developed to predict potential drug-disease interactions. RESULTS: The performance of the proposed model is evaluated on two benchmark datasets under tenfold cross-validation. And to further verify the predictive ability, case studies for predicting new potential indications of drugs were carried out. CONCLUSION: The experimental results proved the proposed model is a useful tool for predicting new indications for drugs or new treatments for diseases, and can accelerate drug repositioning and related drug research and discovery.

To explore structure-activity relationships with respect to light-harvesting behavior, a family of neutral iridium complexes [Ir(ppy)2(LR)] 1-4 (where ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, and N̂N = 2-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine and its functionalized derivatives) were designed and synthesized. The structural modifications in metal complexes are accomplished through the attributions of electron-donating CH3 in 2, OCH3 in 3, and electron-withdrawing CF3 in 4. The structural analysis displays that the pyridylpyrrole acts as one-negative charged bidentated ligand to chelate the iridium center. The electrochemical and photophysical properties of these complexes were systematically studied. The neutral 1-4 as well as the ionic structurally analogous [Ir(ppy)2(bpy)](PF6) (5) were utilized as PSs in photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water with [Co(bpy)3](PF6)2 as catalyst and triethanolamine (TEOA) as electron sacrificial agent in the presence of salt LiCl. Complex 1 maintains activity for more than 144 h under irradiation, and the total turnover number is up to 1768. The electrochemical properties and the quenching reaction indicate the H2 generation by neutral complexes 1-4 is involved exclusively in the oxidative quenching process.

Spurred by the rapid growth of Ru-based complexes as molecular water oxidation catalysts (WOCs), we propose novel ruthenium(II) complexes bearing pyridylpyrrole-carboxylate (H2ppc) ligands as members of the WOC family. The structure of these complexes has 4-picoline (pic)/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in [Ru(ppc)(pic)2(dmso)] and pic/pic in [Ru(ppc)(pic)3] as axial ligands. Another ppc2- ligand and one pic ligand are located at the equatorial positions. [Ru(ppc)(pic)2(dmso)] behaves as a WOC as determined by electrochemical measurement and has an ultrahigh electrocatalytic current density of 8.17 mA cm-2 at 1.55 V (vs NHE) with a low onset potential of 0.352 V (vs NHE), a turnover number of 241, a turnover frequency of 203.39 s-1, and kcat of 16.34 s-1 under neutral conditions. The H2O/pic exchange of the complexes accompanied by oxidation of a ruthenium center is the initial step in the catalytic cycle. The cyclic voltametric measurements of [Ru(ppc)(pic)2(dmso)] at various scan rates, Pourbaix diagrams (plots of E vs pH), and kinetic studies suggested a water nucleophilic attack mechanism. HPO42- in a phosphate buffer solution is invoked in water oxidation as the proton acceptor.

Postsynthetic modification (PSM) has been demonstrated to be a powerful method for achieving new covalent organic frameworks (COFs) via single-step or multistep organic functional group transformations on established COF frameworks. PSM, however, might sometimes lead to collapse of the COF framework, decreases in crystallinity, or low postsynthetic yield due to the inherent limit of solid-state synthesis. Herein we report, for the first time, a new synthetic strategy that can generate new COFs via multicomponent one-pot in situ reactions. In total, 12 α-aminonitrile- and quinoline-linked COFs with high crystallinity and permanent porosity are successfully achieved by three-component one-pot in situ Strecker and Povarov reactions under solvothermal conditions in high yields. The obtained COFs feature the same structures as those obtained from the stepwise PSM approach on an established imine-linked COF. This in situ multicomponent assembly strategy, as a synthetic methodology parallel to PSM, might open a new route for constructing COFs that is not possible under PSM conditions.

BACKGROUND Thyroid cancer (TC) is one of the most prevalent endocrine malignancies and there may be many unclarified molecular events and gene types involved in TC. The objective of this study was to assess the clinical implications and potential mechanisms of serum response factor (SRF) in TC. MATERIAL AND METHODS RNA-sequencing and gene chip data with TC expression were collected from The Cancer Genome Atlas/Genotype-Tissue Expression, Gene Expression Omnibus, ArrayExpress, Sequence Read Archive, and Oncomine. SRF expression of all TC and adjacent non-cancerous tissue were calculated using the t test, STATA, and Meta-DiSc. The related pathways of the potential SRF target genes and target miRNAs were explored. Dual-luciferase reporter assay was performed to validate the association between SRF and its putative miRNA. RESULTS One RNA-sequencing and 15 gene chips were collected, and the pooled standardized mean difference of SRF was -1.00. Furthermore, the area under the curve of sROC of SRF in TC was 0.8251, indicating a dramatic decreased expression of SRF in TC tissues based on 1118 cases. The intersection of differentially expressed genes in TC, SRF co-expressed genes, and SRF potential target genes achieved from Cistrome Cancer led to 169 overlapped genes. miR-330-5p was predicted to target SRF, which was further confirmed by dual-luciferase reporter assay. CONCLUSIONS The reduction of SRF appears to play a crucial role in the origin of TC. These properties are accomplished by the target genes of SRF, as a transcription factor, or by the axes with the associated miRNAs.

AIMS: To evaluate the short- and long-term outcomes of 3 different endoscopic dissection techniques for upper gastrointestinal (GI) submucosal tumours (SMTs). METHODS: Data for 135 patients withGI SMTs who underwent multiband mucosectomy (MBM), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), or endoscopic submucosal excavation (ESE) were retrospectively assessed. The en bloc resection rate, endoscopic complete resection rate, operation time, potential complications and local recurrence rate were compared. RESULTS: No significant differences were observed in the rate of endoscopic complete resections and pathologic complete resections among the three groups. For SMTs > 15 mm in width, the lowest en bloc resection rate was found for MBM (P = 0.000). MBM was also associated with the shortest procedure time, lowest perforation rate and lowest rate of major bleeding. ESE was the most effective procedure for muscularis propria (MP) lesions but was associated with the longest operation time (P < 0.01). The ESD and ESE groups had similar perforation rates (P > 0.05). No differences were observed in 4-year local recurrence rates among the groups (P = 0.945). CONCLUSIONS: MBM is a simple and effective method for the treatment of small SMTs and achieves clinical success rates similar to those of ESD and ESE. However, ESD and ESE are preferable for larger and deep lesions and are associated with a longer operation time. Nonetheless, all 3 techniques resulted in a low 4-year local recurrence rate. Large-scale randomized clinical trials are needed to further investigate these results.

High concentrations of plasma lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] have been inferred to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, such as coronary artery diseases, restenosis, and stroke. Apolipoprotein(a) [apo(a)] is one of the most important components of Lp(a) and contributes greatly to the increased concentration of plasma Lp(a). As a critical positive transacting factor of apo(a) gene, Ets1 has been proven as a target gene of several miRNAs, such as miR-193b, miR-125b-5p, miR-200b, miR-1, and miR-499. In this study, a series of experiments on miRNAs and relative miRNAs inhibitor delivered HepG2 cells were conducted, and two miRNAs that downregulate the apo(a) by targeting the 3'-UTR of Ets1 were identified. Results showed that apo(a) and Ets1 were differentially expressed in SMMC7721 and HepG2 cell lines. Meanwhile, apo(a) and Ets1 were inversely correlated with several hepatic endogenous miRNAs, such as miR-125b-5p, miR-23b-3p, miR-26a-5p, and miR-423-5p, which were predicted to bind to Ets1. Results show that miR-125b-5p and miR-23b-3p mimics could inhibit the synthesis of apo(a) by directly targeting Ets1 in HepG2, thereby reducing the plasma Lp (a) concentration.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether endoscopic resection (ER) and minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) are safe and effective for treating squamous intraepithelial neoplasia of the esophagus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed a total of 99 consecutive patients with pathologically confirmed early esophageal cancer between December 2007 and 2011. ER was performed in 59 patients, whereas MIE was performed in 40 patients. We compared the 2 groups according to R0 resection rates, treatment-related complications, mean hospital stay, local recurrence rates, and 3- and 4-year overall survival. RESULTS: No significant differences were found in the R0 resection rates between ER and MIE (94.9% vs. 97.5%, P>0.05). The occurrence rate of minor complications in the ER group was significantly lower than that in the thoracoscopic esophagectomy group (11.8% vs. 32.5%, P>0.05). The mean operative time in the ER group was 74±23 minutes, which was significantly shorter than that in the MIE group (298±46 min). The average length of hospital stay in the ER group was significantly shorter than that in the MIE group (P<0.001). No significant differences were observed in the local recurrence rates between the 2 groups (P>0.05). Similarly, no differences were found in the 3-year survival rate (ER: 96.6%, vs. MIE: 97.5%, P>0.05) and 4-year survival rate (ER: 91.5% vs. MIE: 90%, P>0.05) between the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS: ER achieves the same positive results as MIE in the treatment of early esophageal cancer and is associated with a lower complication rate, a shorter recovery time, and a similar survival rate. However, multiple ER procedures were required for several patients in this study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the association between Interleukin-18 (IL-18) gene polymorphisms of the donor and recipient in liver transplant patients with bacterial infections. METHODS: Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs7106524, rs5744247, rs1946518, rs549908 and rs187238) of the IL-18 gene from the donors were genotyped and their association with post-operative bacterial infections was evaluated in liver transplant patients (N=113). A second independent group of liver transplant patients from a different organ transplant centre was also recruited for validation purposes (N=44). RESULTS: IL-18 mRNA mean expression levels and protein levels were significantly lower in liver transplant patients with bacterial infections. For the donor SNP rs1946518, more recipients carried the A allele in the bacterial-infected group than the uninfected group (61.4% vs 39.7%; P ≤0.002). The mean IL-18 mRNA expression and protein levels were significantly lower in the transplanted livers of recipients carrying the rs1946518 AA genotype compared with those from recipients with CC genotype (3.64, 3.33 vs. 2.75, P≤0.048). The A allele of rs1946518 also resulted in lower luciferase activity than the C allele in a reporter assay. The area under ROC curve indicated that the rs1946518 SNP genotype in the donor liver predicted an increased risk of bacterial infection after liver transplantation (AUROC>0.82). CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that the IL-18 rs1946518 SNP in the donor liver is a risk factor for developing bacterial infection after liver transplantation.

This article reviewed the current situation of ethnomedicines in China, and propos that the important research on ethnomedicine is to focus on the theoretical and empirical characteristics of ethnomedicine and the special features in the processes of collecting,processing and clinical application of ethnomedicine, which will be benefit to find the research principles and methods with the characteristics of ethnomedicine. These principles include making clear of the effective substances and mechanisms, and theoretical and empirical characteristics of ethnomedicine. The three methods in the new drug discovery technology system for ethnomedicine are to solve the difference in varieties of traditional medical systems depending on finding the similarities of them, to find the conjunction in varieties of traditional medical systems through the key-herbs, and to find medicinal sources in varieties of traditional medical systems according to pharmaphylogeny.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: We compared the efficacy and safety of multiband mucosectomy (MBM) vs endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for the treatment of squamous intraepithelial neoplasia of the esophagus. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 78 patients with squamous intraepithelial neoplasia of the esophagus who received either ESD or MBM between January 2009 and January 2011 at the Tengzhou Central People's Hospital in China. We compared rates of bloc resection and curative resection, as well as complications and local recurrence, between groups. RESULTS: Overall, there was no statistical difference in the rate of complete resection between patients who received ESD (95.8%) vs MBM (93%) (P > .05). For tumors less than 15 mm in width, ESD produced a significantly higher rate of en bloc resection (100%) and curative resection (92.3%) than MBM (44.8% and 41%; P < .05). No significant differences were found between lesions less than 15 mm. MBM had a significantly shorter procedure time (38 ± 11 min) than ESD (84 ± 35 min) (P < .05). Major bleeding occurred in 1.85% of MBM procedures and in 16.7% of ESD procedures (P > .05). ESD led to perforations in 8.3% of cases, whereas MBM did not lead to any perforations (P < .05). No significant differences were found between groups in proportions of cases with postoperative esophageal strictures (16.7% vs 14.8%; P > .05) or the 3-year rate of local recurrence (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: Based on a retrospective comparison of patients who underwent ESD vs MBM for squamous intraepithelial neoplasia of the esophagus, ESD should be reserved for patients with larger neoplastic lesions (>15 mm), with respect to the success of attempted en bloc resection and the number of curative resections achieved. However, ESD has longer procedure times and higher rates of complication. MBM allows for safe and easy piecemeal resections, and is associated with similar levels of clinical success as ESD for lesions less than 15 mm. Large, randomized, controlled studies are needed to determine which endoscopic resection modality is superior for patients with high-grade intraepithelia neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: The number and survival rate of simultaneous liver-kidney transplant (SLKT) recipients have increased dramatically since 2002. However, the long-term effectiveness of SLKT in patients with hepatitis B is unknown. MATERIAL/METHODS: Forty-six patients who visited the Organ Transplant Center of the Shanghai First People's Hospital between January 2001 and May 2005 had hepatitis B virus infection and renal failure (any degree), and underwent organ transplantation: 21 patients underwent SLKT and 25 patients underwent liver transplant (LT) alone. RESULTS: The 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates of SLKT recipients were 90.5%, 81.0%, and 81.0%, respectively. Incidence of acute hepatic allograft rejection between SLKT recipients and LT recipients (33% vs. 16%) did not reach significance (P=0.170). Despite higher infection rate, more prevalent hepatitis B relapse, and longer stay in the intensive care unit, SLKT recipients experienced significantly higher 1-year survival rate (90.5%) compared with LT recipients (60%, P=0.019). Multivariate regression analysis revealed that postoperative renal failure (odds ratio (OR)=48, P=0.003) and Risk/Injury/Failure/Loss/End-stage (RIFLE) stage (OR=8, P=0.012) were independent risk factors for postoperative death after LT. CONCLUSIONS: SLKT in patients with hepatitis B had higher early-stage infection rate, but had a higher long-term survival rate compared with the LT group. Although the incidence of postoperative hepatitis B relapse in SLKT recipients was higher, timely and reasonable treatment can ensure long-term survival of patients. Worsening RIFLE stage of recipients can predict high mortality when only given LT. SLKT might be a better choice for RIFLE stage 2 or 3 patients than LT alone.

Objective To observe the effect of needle embedded in Neiguan (PC6) on electro- cardiogram (ECG) changes in model mini-pigs with chronic myocardial ischemia. Methods The protein shrink narrow ring (Ameroid Ring) was placed in the proximal part of the left coronary anterior descend- ing branch of 12 Chinese mini-pigs to prepare animal model. One died during the modeling. Chronic myo- cardial ischemia mini-pig models were established after 4 weeks. Successfully modeled 11 mini-pigs were divided into the test group (n =6) and the control group (n =5). Needle were embedded in Neiguan (PC6) of the test group and Zusanli (ST36) of the control group at week 4 after modeling. Electroacupuncture (EA) at corresponding acupoint twice (once before embedding and at week 2 after embedding) , 20 min each time. Changes of Q wave of ECG, heart rate, and ST-T interval were observed in the two groups be- fore and after modeling, before and after EA. Results Compared with before modeling in the same group, the absolute value of Q wave both increased in the two groups after modeling (P <0. 05, P <0. 01J. No statistical difference existed in heart rate in the two groups between before and after modeling (P> 0. 05). Compared with before needling in the same group, ST-T interval was prolonged in the test group (P <0. 05). Compared with the control group at the same time point, the absolute value of Q wave was re- duced before EA, ST-T interval was prolonged after EA in the test group (P <0. 05). No statistical differ- ence existed in heart rate between the control group and the test group before EA (P >0. 05). Conclusion Needle embedded in Neiguan (PC6) could arrive at therapeutic effect of myocardial ischemia possibly through improving myocardial blood supply.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of litter thickness on growth performance, immune status, environmental condition, and welfare quality in yellow broilers. In total, 1,800 one-day-old Suqin yellow broilers were raised for 21 d. On d 22, 1,600 birds of similar BW (404±12 g) were randomly selected and placed into 20 indoor pens (8 birds/m2, 10 m2/pen). These birds were assigned to a litter treatment of 4, 8, 12, and 16 cm. Each treatment was repeated in five pens. The results showed that a thicker litter was related to increased BW, daily weight gain, and daily feed intake (P<0.001). Feed conversion ratio and mortality were unaffected by litter thickness (P=0.320, P=0.353, respectively). Absolute and relative liver weights showed a significant linear response to increasing litter thickness (P=0.01, P=0.001, respectively). The litter moisture content, air ammonia, and CO2 content decreased, whereas the air dust content increased with increasing litter thickness (P<0.001, P=0.017, P=0.033, P<0.001, respectively). Litter thickness had no effect on gait, plumage damage, hock burn or breast skin crusting (P = 0.076, P=0.964, P=0.131, P=0.401, respectively). Plumage cleanliness, foot pad dermatitis, hock swelling and breast blister varied significantly with litter thickness (P=0.027, P=0.011, P=0.014, P=0.042, respectively). The results of this study suggest that an increasing litter thickness has a beneficial effect on the growth performance, environmental condition and welfare of birds.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the echocardiographic diagnosis for ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy (NCCM) in foetus and to analyze the pathologic features of NCCM.
 METHODS: A total of 9 patients with fetal NCCM were examined by prenatal echocardiography from 2004 to 2013, which was compared with postnatal echocardiography or autopsy to analyze the fetal characteristic of myocardial ultrastructure.
 RESULTS: The results of echocardiography displayed an excessive muscle trabecular meshwork and muscle trabecular crypt, and the ventricular myocardium and non-compaction/compaction ratio was ≥2.0. Among the 9 fetuses of NCCM, 6 fetuses were involved in left ventricle, 2 in both left and right ventricles and 1 in right ventricle. Two fetuses were confirmed by postnatal echocardiography, the remaining 7 patients were chosen to terminate their pregnancies, which were confirmed by autopsy later. Muscle biopsies revealed the abnormal myocardial mitochondria, sarcomeres and myocardial fibrosis.
 CONCLUSION: It is feasible to accurately diagnose NCCM by prenatal echocardiography. Fetal NCCM most often involves the left ventricle, but it can involve the right ventricle or both, too. The myocardial ultrastructure of fetal NCCM possesses certain unique characteristics, such as the low maturation of the mitochondria, sarcomeres and myocardial fibers.
