Thyroid hormones and Cortisol level are the essential biomarkers in the assessment of stress condition. This study was done to estimate the metabolic hormonal profile of Tharparkar and Sahiwal during heat stress condition. The experiment was conducted on two groups consisting of Tharparkar and Sahiwal animals (5 in each group) and the experimental period comprised a 7-day acclimatization period, a heat exposure period of 21 days at control (25 °C), moderate (35 °C) and severe (42 °C) heat stress within a 9-10-day recovery period between each exposure. The hormonal concentrations of T3, T4 and cortisol were determined in serum. The serum concentration of Thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3) decreases whereas cortisol level increases in both the breeds when subjected to heat stress. However, the serum level of T4 was significantly (p < 0.05) more declined in Sahiwal as compared to Tharparkar but there was no significant difference found between the two breeds in serum T3 levels. The cortisol levels were elevated in both breeds during heat stress but significantly (p < 0.05) more elevated in the Sahiwal. Hence, observations of these hormonal profiles suggest a better thermo-adaptability in Tharparkar as compared to Sahiwal.

We report the first results of a search for leptophobic dark matter (DM) from the Coherent-CAPTAIN-Mills (CCM) liquid argon (LAr) detector. An engineering run with 120 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and 17.9×10^{20} protons on target (POT) was performed in fall 2019 to study the characteristics of the CCM detector. The operation of this 10-ton detector was strictly light based with a threshold of 50 keV and used coherent elastic scattering off argon nuclei to detect DM. Despite only 1.5 months of accumulated luminosity, contaminated LAr, and nonoptimized shielding, CCM's first engineering run has already achieved sensitivity to previously unexplored parameter space of light dark matter models with a baryonic vector portal. With an expected background of 115 005 events, we observe 115 005+16.5 events which is compatible with background expectations. For a benchmark mediator-to-DM mass ratio of m_{V_{B}}/m_{χ}=2.1, DM masses within the range 9 MeV≲m_{χ}≲50 MeV are excluded at 90% C. L. in the leptophobic model after applying the Feldman-Cousins test statistic. CCM's upgraded run with 200 PMTs, filtered LAr, improved shielding, and 10 times more POT will be able to exclude the remaining thermal relic density parameter space of this model, as well as probe new parameter space of other leptophobic DM models.

Nanoscale structures were produced on silicon surfaces by low-energy oxygen ion irradiation: periodic rippled or terraced patterns formed spontaneously, depending on the chosen combination of beam incidence angle and ion fluence. Atomic force microscopy image processing and analysis accurately described the obtained nanotopographies. Graphene monolayers grown by chemical vapour deposition were transferred onto the nanostructured silicon surfaces. The interfacial interaction between the textured surface and the deposited graphene governs the conformation of the thin carbon layer; the resulting different degree of regularity and conformality of the substrate-induced graphene corrugations was studied and it was related to the distinctive topographical features of the silicon nanostructures. Raman spectroscopy revealed specific features of the strain caused by the alternating suspension and contact with the underlying nanostructures and the consequent modulation of the silicon-graphene interaction. Lay Description In the field of nanosciences, nanotechnologies and advanced materials, it is pivotal to produce and integrate nanostructures in a controlled, cost-effective and possibly high-throughput manner. Currently, the surface nanopatterning by ion beam irradiation (IBI) is showing its potential in overcoming some of the limits that characterize the conventional lithographic techniques. IBI can produce self-organized and regular patterns of nanostructures, such as ripples, dots, and holes, having heights and lateral periodicities in a pre-defined range. The nanopatterns can develop over large surface areas of a broad class of materials and have been tested for different applications, e.g. microelectronic device fabrication, catalysis, nanoscale magnetism, surface-enhanced Raman scattering. Also, the ion-induced patterns allowed the control of physical properties such as wettability, reflectance, and photoluminescence. As a whole, this is a highly dynamic and continuously evolving field. Graphene was first obtained from bulk graphite by mechanical exfoliation; remarkable mechanical, thermal and optical properties came to light; they make graphene an ideal material for sensing. Also, the research on graphene paves the way for basic and applied studies on other ultrathin thickness materials, such as monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide or monolayer metal oxide, which also show peculiar properties as compared to their bulk version. Since graphene is a zero-gap semi-metal, a finite energy gap must be open to engineer graphene-based electronic devices. At this aim, researchers can take advantage of the mechanical properties of graphene, since its out-of-plane deformation can favourably modify its electronic structure. While the spontaneous, random self-folding of graphene to form wrinkles has thermodynamics reasons and is unavoidable above a certain material length, the interactions between graphene and substrates can generate, in principle, designed wrinkled structures. Therefore, a field of study has emerged, focused on the control and tuning of the geometry of graphene corrugations and their influence on specific physical and chemical properties. To the best of our knowledge, this work studies for the first time the geometry and strain in graphene wrinkles induced by silicon substrates that were suitably nanopatterned by ion beam irradiation.

Dual-phase xenon detectors lead the search for keV-scale nuclear recoil signals expected from the scattering of weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter, and can potentially be used to study the coherent nuclear scattering of MeV-scale neutrinos. New capabilities of such experiments can be enabled by extending their nuclear recoil searches down to the lowest measurable energy. The response of the liquid xenon target medium to nuclear recoils, however, is not well characterized below a few keV, leading to large uncertainties in projected sensitivities. In this work, we report a new measurement of ionization signals from nuclear recoils in liquid xenon down to the lowest energy reported to date. At 0.3 keV, we find that the average recoil produces approximately one ionization electron; this is the first measurement of nuclear recoil signals at the single-ionization-electron level, approaching the physical limit of liquid xenon ionization detectors. We discuss the implications of these measurements on the physics reach of xenon detectors for nuclear-recoil-based WIMP dark matter searches and the detection of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering.

Taenia solium cysticercosis is a major public health problem in developing countries. Swine cysticercosis results in economic losses for pig farmers in disease endemic areas. Consumption of cysticercotic pork leads to taeniasis in humans. Eggs excreted in the faeces of T. solium carriers disseminate to humans and pigs through the faecal-oral route, thus maintaining the life cycle in endemic areas. An enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB) assay was developed using whole crude T. solium cysticercus antigens (WCA) for the diagnosis of swine cysticercosis. Sera from 30 swine with cysticercosis confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging were subjected to EITB assay. Sera from 50 swine that were raised in a government farm and not allowed to roam freely were included as negative controls. Two or more bands of 8, 11, 14, 24, 26 and 29 kDa were immunoreactive on blot with sera from all infected swine except two, and none from swine raised on the government farm. The overall sensitivity and specificity of EITB assay for diagnosis of swine cysticercosis were 93.3% and 100%, respectively. Hence, EITB assay based on WCA may be a suitable diagnostic tool for swine cysticercosis in endemic areas.

BACKGROUND: Ethnic diversity between different populations may affect treatment safety and efficacy. AIMS AND METHODS: A subanalysis to a global trial (study 326) was carried out to ascertain the safety and efficacy of donepezil 23 mg/day compared with donepezil 10 mg/day in Asian patients with moderate-to-severe Alzheimer's disease. Changes in cognition and global functioning were measured by the Severe Impairment Battery (SIB) and Clinician's Interview-Based Impression of Change Plus Caregiver Input (CIBIC-Plus), respectively, at week 24. RESULTS: Cognitive improvement measured by SIB score was greater with donepezil 23 mg than with donepezil 10 mg (+1.36 vs -1.56]; difference, 2.92). There was no difference between the groups in global function measured by the CIBIC-Plus (3.94 and 3.95, respectively). Overall, 119 patients (82.1%) receiving donepezil 23 mg and 56 (71.8%) receiving donepezil 10 mg experienced ≥1 treatment emergent adverse events (TEAEs). In the donepezil 23 mg group, the incidence of TEAEs was higher among patients of lower weight (<55 kg) at baseline than in those of higher weight (64 of 75 patients [85.3%] vs 55 of 70 patients [78.5%]). CONCLUSIONS: The benefits and risks associated with donepezil 23 mg in Asian patients are comparable to those of the global study population.

Friction characteristics of graphene deposited on different substrates have been studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). In particular, we compared mechanically exfoliated graphene transferred over Si/SiO2 with respect to monolayer (ML) graphene grown in our laboratory by low temperature chemical vapor deposition on Ni(111) single crystal. Friction force measurements by AFM have been carried out as function of load under different environment conditions, namely vacuum (10(-5) Torr), nitrogen and air. The typical decrease of friction force with increasing number of layers has been observed on graphene over Si/SiO2 in all environment including vacuum. Continuum mechanical approximation has been used to analyze the friction versus load curves of ML graphene on Ni(111). Analysis shows that Derjaguin-Mueller-Toporov model is in good agreement with our experimental data indicating that overall behavior of the interface graphene-Ni(111) is relatively rigid respect to out of plane deformations. This result is consistent with the structural characteristics of the interface since graphene grows in registry with Ni(111) surface with covalent bonding character. Finally, the shear strength and the work of adhesion of the two systems with respect to AFM tip in vacuum have been compared. The result of this procedure indicates that shear strength and work of adhesion measured on graphene-Si/SiO2 interface are always greater than those on graphene-Ni(111) interface.

Panchagavya Ghrita (PG), according to Ayurvedic formulary of India (AFI), is used to treat epilepsy (apasmara), fever (jvara), mania (unmade) and jaundice (kamala). In the present study, we examined its effect on convulsions, oxidative stress and cognitive impairment in pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) induced seizures in rats. PG @ 250, 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 mg/kg was administered orally for 7 days to male Wistar rats. On day 7, PTZ (60 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally 2 h after the last dose of PG. Sodium valproate (300 mg/kg) was used as positive control. Latency to myoclonic jerks, clonus and generalized tonic clonic seizures (GTCS) were recorded for seizure severity. Cognitive impairment was assessed using elevated plus maze and passive avoidance tests. Malondialdehyde and reduced glutathione levels were measured in rat brain. The results have shown that pretreatment with PG @ 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 mg/kg exhibited 16.6, 33.3, 50 and 100% protection against occurrence of GTCS. The pretreatment with PG has significantly improved cognitive functions and the oxidative stress induced by seizures demonstrating its protective effect against PTZ induced seizures, and further, use of PG as an anticonvulsant in Ayurvedic system of medicine.

Cyanobacteria are known to produce array of compounds. In an earlier report, we reported antibacterial and antifungal activities in methanolic crude extracts of laboratory grown Lyngbya aestuarii and Aphanothece bullosa isolated from Chilka Lake and local paddy field respectively. In this report the same methanolic crude extracts were subjected to TLC purification twice by altering the solvents and UV—illuminated bands bioassayed. Such UV illuminated potent bands obtained after 2nd TLC were subjected to spectroscopic analysis (UV, IR, 1H NMR and LCMS/MS). We have screened malyngolide and dragonamide C from L. aestuarii and a diterpenoid and majusculoic acid from A. bullosa. Dragonamide C and malyngolide were found to be antifungal while majusculoic acid and a diterpenoid as antibacterial. As far as our knowledge goes, this is the first ever report where fresh water A. bullosa was found to be a source of diterpenoid and majusculoic acid. Likewise, L. aestuarii was also established as a source of malyngolide and dragonamide C. This again indicated that cyanobacteria are inherently endowed with the capacity to produce metabolites according to niche and species specific manner emphasising fresh water cyanobacterial strain are as important as marine one.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) insertion/deletion polymorphism and ICH with an ACE level in a North Indian population. Patient with ICH and age- and sex- matched control subjects were recruited. Case control study design was used. Genotyping was performed by using Polymerase chain reaction. Serum ACE levels were measured by colorimetric method. Our results were integrated with other reported studies across different countries in a meta-analysis. One hundred and six patients with ICH and 106 age- and sex- matched control subjects were recruited. Mean age of cases and control subjects were 53.4 ± 1 and 52.9 ± 13.4, respectively. The DD genotypes were more frequency distributed in cases compared with controls (OR 2; 95 % CI, 1.02-3.8, P = 0.04) under a recessive model of inheritance. Meta-analysis suggests significant association between ACE I/D polymorphism and risk of ICH (OR 1.98; 95 % CI, 1.53-2.57) under the recessive model of inheritance and under the dominant model of inheritance (OR 1.31; 95 % CI, 1.18-1.45). The findings of the present study show a significant association between ACE insertion/deletion polymorphism and ICH. Meta-analysis indicate that ACE I/D polymorphism may be a susceptible marker for risk factor of ICH in Asian population.

Forty-four isolates of Bacillus thuringiensis like bacteria from various sources in different locations from Sudan were tested for their insecticidal activity. The toxicity of these isolates ranged from 6.6 to 70% to the neonates of cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera at 10 ppm concentration. The most effective ones are Kb-29, St-6 and Wh-1 comparable with HD-1. Toxicity of isolates to larvae of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum ranged from 20 to 100%. Isolates St-2 and St-23 gave 100% larval mortality within 15 days of exposure and were at par with Ab-8, Ab-12, Kb-26, Kb-30, Om-4, Po-2, Po-5, Po-7, Sa-8 and Wh-5 and were also comparable with E. coli clone expressing Cry3 toxin. The most effective five isolates viz., Kb-29, St-2, St-6, St-23 and Wh-1 belonged to B. thuringiensis. The St-6 isolate, which also showed high toxicity to T. castaneum larvae, had cry1 genes along with coleopteran active cry28 genes, but not cry3 genes. Of the 25 isolates characterized with 16s DNA sequencing, seven belonged to Paenibacillus spp., one Lysinibacillus sphaericus, one Bacillus pumilus, four Bacillus spp., and rest 12 belonged to B. thuringiensis. Biochemical characterization in each species showed variation. The present study shows potential of some isolates like Kb-29, St-2, St-6, St-23 and Wh-1 as promising bioinsecticides.

AIMS: Local failure remains the major concern in grade 4 glioma or glioblastoma (GBM). Pilot studies have shown a radiotherapy (RT) dose-response relationship in GBM. Here we present our preliminary data of RT dose escalation using 68Ga-Pentixafor PET scan. High 68Ga-pentixafor uptake in glioma cells helps in sharp demarcation between tumour and normal brain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This phase II prospective study was conducted from 2018 to 2020. Thirty, biopsy-proven cases of grade 4 glioma were included. All patients underwent post-operative MRI of the brain and 68Ga-Pentixafor PET scan. RT was planned in 2-phases. Phase-1 GTV (GTV1) comprised of T2/flair abnormality, PET-avid disease and post-op cavity. A margin of 2cm was given to GTV-1 to create phase-1 CTV (CTV1), which was further expanded to 0.5cm to generate phase-1 PTV (PTV1). A radiation dose of 46Gy/23fr was prescribed to PTV-1. Phase-2 GTV (GTV2) consisted of CT/MRI contrast-enhancing lesion, PET avid disease and post-op cavity. A margin of 0.5 cm was given to GTV2 to create phase-2 CTV (CTV2) which was expanded to 0.5 cm to create phase-2 PTV (PTV2). RT dose of 14 Gy/7 fr was prescribed to PTV2. PET avid disease was delineated as GTV PET and a margin of 3mm was given to generate PTV-PET which received escalated RT dose of 21 Gy/7fr by simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) in phase 2 (Total dose to PTV PET = 67 Gy/30 fr). All patients received concurrent and adjuvant temozolomide. The data was prospectively maintained in Microsoft Excel sheet. SPSS v 23 was used for statistical analysis. The primary endpoints were estimation of the overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), and secondary endpoint was to measure the incidence of radiation necrosis. Categorical variables were reported as frequency and percentage and quantitative variables were reported as median and range. RESULTS: Data from thirty patients were analysed. A median OS of 23 months was observed with estimated 1, 2 and 3 years OS of 90%, 40% and 17.8% respectively. A significant association of OS was seen with the extent of surgery (p = 0.04) and kernofsky performance status (p = 0.007). No patient developed significant radiation necrosis. CONCLUSIONS: The index study did not show any survival benefit from dose escalation RT. However, all of the patients tolerated the treatment well and none of them developed radiation necrosis. Considering the small sample size as a limitation of the index study, the role of 68Ga-pentixafor PET scan for radiation dose escalation should be further explored. 2D materials, given their form-factor, high surface-to-volume ratio, and chemical functionality have immense use in sensor design. Engineering 2D heterostructures can result in robust combinations of desirable properties but sensor design methodologies require careful considerations about material properties and orientation to maximize sensor response. This study introduces a sensor approach that combines the excellent electrical transport and transduction properties of graphite film with chemical reactivity derived from the edge sites of semiconducting molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) through a two-step chemical vapour deposition method. The resulting vertical heterostructure shows potential for high-performance hybrid chemiresistors for gas sensing. This architecture offers active sensing edge sites across the MoS2 flakes. We detail the growth of vertically oriented MoS2 over a nanoscale graphite film (NGF) cross-section, enhancing the adsorption of analytes such as NO2, NH3, and water vapor. Raman spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations and scanning probe methods elucidate the influence of chemical doping by distinguishing the role of MoS2 edge sites relative to the basal plane. High-resolution imaging techniques confirm the controlled growth of highly crystalline hybrid structures. The MoS2/NGF hybrid structure exhibits exceptional chemiresistive responses at both room and elevated temperatures compared to bare graphitic layers. Quantitative analysis reveals that the sensitivity of this hybrid sensor surpasses other 2D material hybrids, particularly in parts per billion concentrations.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal sepsis is associated with varied degree of hypoxemia and atelactasis in the lung and can enhance the onset of desaturation of arterial blood during apnea. AIMS: This study looked at methods to improve safety margin of apnea during induction of anesthesia in these high-risk patients. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: It was a randomized, single blind study on adult patients presenting for emergency laparotomy due to peritonitis in a university teaching hospital setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In group 1 (IS) (n = 32), three sessions of incentive spirometry (IS) were performed within one hour before induction of anesthesia. In group 2 (DB) (n = 34), patients were subjected to deep breathing sessions in a similar manner. All patients received preoxygenation (100%) by mask for 3 min, followed by rapid-sequence induction of anesthesia using fentanyl, thiopental, and suxamethonium and endotracheal intubation. Patients were subjected to a period of apnea by keeping the end of the endotracheal tube open to air till they developed 95% hemoglobin saturation (SpO 2) by pulse oxymetry. Positive pressure ventilation was resumed at the end. We observed for hemodynamic changes, apnea time, and SpO 2 (100%) recovery time on resuming ventilation. Arterial blood gas samples were taken before intervention, after IS or DB, after preoxygenation, and at the end of apnea. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), X 2 test, Kaplan-Meier graph, and log-rank tests were applied to compare the two study groups. RESULTS: Oxygenation level in group 1 (265 ± 76.7 mmHg) patients was significantly (P < 0.001) higher than in group 2 (221 ± 61.8 mmHg)at the end of preoxygenation. The apnea time (median: lower bound - upper bound Confidence Interval apnea time) (272:240-279 s) in group 1 (IS) patients was significantly higher P < 0.05) than in group 2 (180:163-209 s) patients. Saturation recovery time (35:34-46 s) in group 1 (IS) patients was also quicker than in group 2 patients (48:44-58 s). CONCLUSIONS: IS in the preoperative period is superior to deep breathing sessions for improving apnea tolerance during induction of anesthesia in abdominal sepsis patients.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) improve recovery after surgery. This study aimed to determine whether ERAS leads to a decrease in stay in the hospital and improves global and functional recovery after head and neck neoplasms surgery. METHODS: We performed a prospective case and historical control study after the ERAS application. The hospital database selected 50 confirmed eligible patients in control non-ERAS group. Prospectively 54 patients were included in the ERAS group. The primary outcome was time to readiness for discharge (TRD); secondary outcomes were the length of stay (LOS), readmission rate of up to 30 days and Quality of recovery score QoR-15. Data were compared with appropriate parametric and nonparametric tests. RESULTS: Baseline demographic data of patients were comparable between the two groups. Patients in ERAS group had significantly shorter TRD compared to the non-ERAS group 8 (6-10) vs 11 (8-16); p-value = 0.002. LOS was also significantly shorter in the ERAS group compared to the non-ERAS group [8 (7-11) vs 12 (9-17); p-value = 0.002]. Readmission at 30-days was no different, with six patients in each group. QoR-15 score was statistically better in ERAS group (94.88 ±â€¯12.50) compared to non-ERAS group (85.44 ±â€¯12.68) [p value < 0.001]. CONCLUSION: Implementing the ERAS programme decreased TRD and LOS and improved patient-reported recovery outcome QoR-15 in head and neck neoplasms surgery.

Groundwater management requires a systematic approach since it is crucial to the long-term viability of livelihoods and regional economies all over the world. There is insufficient groundwater management and difficulties in storage plans as a result of increased population, fast urbanisation, and climate change, as well as unpredictability in rainfall frequency and intensity. Groundwater exploration using remote sensing (RS) data and geographic information system (GIS) has become a breakthrough in groundwater research, assisting in the assessment, monitoring, and conservation of groundwater resources. The study region is the Mand catchment of the Mahanadi basin, covering 5332.07 km2 and is located between 21°42'15.525″N and 23°4'19.746″N latitude and 82°50'54.503″E and 83°36'1.295″E longitude in Chhattisgarh, India. The research comprises the generation of thematic maps, delineation of groundwater potential zones and the recommendation of structures for efficiently and successfully recharging groundwater utilising RS and GIS. Groundwater Potential Zones (GPZs) were identified with nine thematic layers using RS, GIS, and the Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) method. Satty's Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to rank the nine parameters that were chosen. The generated GPZs map indicated regions with very low, low to medium, medium to high, and very high groundwater potential encompassing 962.44 km2, 2019.92 km2, 969.19 km2, and 1380.42 km2 of the study region, respectively. The GPZs map was found to be very accurate when compared with the groundwater fluctuation map, and it is used to manage groundwater resources in the Mand catchment. The runoff of the study area can be accommodated by the computing subsurface storage capacity, which will raise groundwater levels in the low and low to medium GPZs. According to the study results, various groundwater recharge structures such as farm ponds, check dams and percolation tanks were suggested in appropriate locations of the Mand catchment to boost groundwater conditions and meet the shortage of water resources in agriculture and domestic use. This study demonstrates that the integration of GIS can provide an efficient and effective platform for convergent analysis of various data sets for groundwater management and planning.

BACKGROUND: Succinylcholine is used for rapid-sequence induction of anesthesia. Fasciculations and myalgia are adverse effects. The pretreatment modalities prevent or minimize its adverse effects. AIMS: The present study is designed to evaluate the efficacy of gabapentin on the incidence of fasciculation and succinylcholine-induced myalgia. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: The study was conducted at a tertiary care teaching hospital in a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled manner. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients of both genders undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy were randomly assigned to two groups. Patients in Group I (Gabapentin group) received 600 mg of gabapentin orally 2 h prior to surgery and patients in Group II (placebo group) received matching placebo. Anesthesia was induced with fentanyl 3 µg/kg, thiopentone 3-5 mg/kg and succinylcholine 1.5 mg/kg. All patients were observed and graded for fasciculations by a blinded observer and patients were intubated. Anesthesia was maintained with oxygen in air, sevoflurane and intermittent vecuronium bromide. After completion of surgery, neuromuscular blockade was reversed. A blinded observer recorded myalgia grade at 24 h. Patients were provided patient-controlled analgesia with fentanyl for postoperative pain relief. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Demographic data, fasciculation grade, fentanyl consumption, and myalgia grade were compared using student t test and test of proportions. RESULTS: The study included 76 American Society of Anesthesiologists' Grade I or II patients of either gender undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. But only 70 patients completed the study. Results demonstrated that the prophylactic use of gabapentin significantly decreases the incidence and the severity of myalgia (20/35 vs. 11/35) (P<0.05) and decreases fentanyl consumption significantly in the study group (620+164 µg vs. 989+238 µg) (P<0.05) without any effects on the incidence and severity of fasciculations. CONCLUSIONS: Prophylactic use of gabapentin 600 mg in laparoscopic cholecystectomy decreases the incidence and severity of myalgia and fentanyl consumption.

In inflammatory bowel disease [IBD], mucosal healing is a major therapeutic target and a reliable predictor of clinical course. However, endoscopic mucosal healing is not synonymous with histological healing, and the additional benefits of including histological remission as a target are unclear. In Crohn´s disease [CD], there are few studies highlighting the value of histological remission as a therapeutic target. Histological activity can persist in CD patients who are in endoscopic remission, and the absence of histological activity may be associated with lower relapse rates. Therefore, standardisation of procedures to evaluate CD histological activity is desirable. Topics that would benefit from standardisation and harmonisation include biopsy procedures, biopsy processing techniques, the content of histological scores, and the definitions of histological remission, histological response, and histological activity. In line with these needs, the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation [ECCO] assembled a consensus group with the objective of developing position statements on CD histology based on published evidence and expert consensus. There was agreement that definitions of histological remission should include absence of erosion, ulceration, and mucosal neutrophils; that the absence of neutrophilic inflammation is an appropriate histological target in CD; that CD histological scores, such as the Global Histological Disease Activity Score, lack formal validation; and that histological scoring systems for ulcerative colitis, including the Geboes Score, Robarts Histopathology Index, and Nancy Histological Index, can be used for scoring intestinal biopsies in CD patients.

Barrett's esophagus is a pre-malignant lesion that can progress to esophageal adenocarcinoma. We perform a multi-omic analysis of pre-cancer samples from 146 patients with a range of outcomes, comprising 642 person years of follow-up. Whole genome sequencing reveals complex structural variants and LINE-1 retrotransposons, as well as known copy number changes, occurring even prior to dysplasia. The structural variant burden captures the most variance across the cohort and genomic profiles do not always match consensus clinical pathology dysplasia grades. Increasing structural variant burden is associated with: high levels of chromothripsis and breakage-fusion-bridge events; increased expression of genes related to cell cycle checkpoint, DNA repair and chromosomal instability; and epigenetic silencing of Wnt signalling and cell cycle genes. Timing analysis reveals molecular events triggering genomic instability with more clonal expansion in dysplastic samples. Overall genomic complexity occurs early in the Barrett's natural history and may inform the potential for cancer beyond the clinically discernible phenotype.

Seasonal genetic variation was assessed in the common house fly Musca domestica. Allozymes at six gene enzyme system viz., ACPH, EST, G6PD, ME, AO and XDH were analyzed. Fourteen loci with twenty seven alleles were unraveled. The genetic variations were found to be affected to a great extent by environmental influence .F statistics has been used to calculate genetic variation which revealed that very little genetic variation has occurred among the house fly populations analyzed in the present study. Further, except ACPH-2, G6PD-2 and XDH-1 all the other loci show inbreeding (Fis>Fst). Thus it appears that the house fly populations analyzed are characterized by high level of inbreeding. Nei's genetic identity (I) and distance (D) values reveal a close similarity between summer and rainy season collections.
