RESUMO

Talbot-Lau x-ray interferometry has been implemented to map electron density gradients in High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) experiments. X-ray backlighter targets have been evaluated for Talbot-Lau X-ray Deflectometry (TXD). Cu foils, wires, and sphere targets have been irradiated by 10-150 J, 8-30 ps laser pulses, while two pulsed-power generators (∼350 kA, 350 ns and ∼200 kA, 150 ns) have driven Cu wire, hybrid, and laser-cut x-pinches. A plasma ablation front generated by the Omega EP laser was imaged for the first time through TXD for densities >1023 cm-3. Backlighter optimization in combination with x-ray CCD, image plates, and x-ray film has been assessed in terms of spatial resolution and interferometer contrast for accurate plasma characterization through TXD in pulsed-power and high-intensity laser environments. The results obtained thus far demonstrate the potential of TXD as a powerful diagnostic for HEDP.

RESUMO

The availability of genomic datasets in association with clinical, phenotypic, and drug sensitivity information represents an invaluable source for potential therapeutic applications, supporting the identification of new drug sensitivity biomarkers and pharmacological targets. Drug discovery and precision oncology can largely benefit from the integration of treatment molecular discriminants obtained from cell line models and clinical tumor samples; however this task demands comprehensive analysis approaches for the discovery of underlying data connections. Here we introduce PATRI (Platform for the Analysis of TRanslational Integrated data), a standalone tool accessible through a user-friendly graphical interface, conceived for the identification of treatment sensitivity biomarkers from user-provided genomics data, associated with information on sample characteristics. PATRI streamlines a translational analysis workflow: first, baseline genomics signatures are statistically identified, differentiating treatment sensitive from resistant preclinical models; then, these signatures are used for the prediction of treatment sensitivity in clinical samples, via random forest categorization of clinical genomics datasets and statistical evaluation of the relative phenotypic features. The same workflow can also be applied across distinct clinical datasets. The ease of use of the PATRI tool is illustrated with validation analysis examples, performed with sensitivity data for drug treatments with known molecular discriminants.

RESUMO

Talbot-Lau x-ray interferometers can map electron density gradients in High Energy Density (HED) samples. In the deflectometer configuration, it can provide refraction, attenuation, elemental composition, and scatter information from a single image. X-ray backlighters in Talbot-Lau deflectometry must meet specific requirements regarding source size and x-ray spectra, amongst others, to accurately diagnose a wide range of HED experiments. 8 keV sources produced in the high-power laser and pulsed power environment were evaluated as x-ray backlighters for Talbot-Lau x-ray deflectometry. In high-power laser experiments, K-shell emission was produced by irradiating copper targets (500 × 500 × 12.5 µm3 foils, 20 µm diameter wire, and >10 µm diameter spheres) with 30 J, 8-30 ps laser pulses and a 25 µm copper wire with a 60 J, 10 ps laser pulse. In the pulsed power environment, single (2 × 40 µm) and double (4 × 25 µm) copper x-pinches were driven at ∼1 kA/ns. Moiré fringe formation was demonstrated for all x-ray sources explored, and detector performance was evaluated for x-ray films, x-ray CCDs, and imaging plates in context of spatial resolution, x-ray emission, and fringe contrast.

RESUMO

Talbot-Lau X-ray deflectometry (TXD) has been developed as an electron density diagnostic for High Energy Density (HED) plasmas. The technique can deliver x-ray refraction, attenuation, elemental composition, and scatter information from a single Moiré image. An 8 keV Talbot-Lau interferometer was deployed using laser and x-pinch backlighters. Grating survival and electron density mapping were demonstrated for 25-29 J, 8-30 ps laser pulses using copper foil targets. Moiré pattern formation and grating survival were also observed using a copper x-pinch driven at 400 kA, ∼1 kA/ns. These results demonstrate the potential of TXD as an electron density diagnostic for HED plasmas.

RESUMO

In this Letter we report the first experimental observation of the double emittance minimum effect in the beam dynamics of high-brightness electron beam generation by photoinjectors; this effect, as predicted by the theory, is crucial in achieving minimum emittance in photoinjectors aiming at producing electron beams for short wavelength single-pass free electron lasers. The experiment described in this Letter was performed at the SPARC photoinjector site, during the first stage of commissioning of the SPARC project. The experiment was made possible by a newly conceived device, called an emittance meter, which allows a detailed and unprecedented study of the emittance compensation process as the beam propagates along the beam pipe.

RESUMO

Collaboration between the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and nephrology nurses is needed to ensure adequate care of critically ill patients with acute renal failure (ARF). To improve this collaboration a questionnaire was circulated to the 122 ICU nurses in the hospital to appraise their knowledge on ARF. A Refresher Course to update on ARF was then organised. Colleagues' interest in the initiative was elevated: 66% of questionnaires were completed which included 88% of nurses attending the course. The experience showed, through measurable results, that team work is essential to collaborative nursing plans. The initiative allowed improvement in the quality of nurses' communication and was accompanied with a significant reduction in short-term mortality rate of dialyzed ARF patients (45 versus 50%; p = 0.045, chi-square test). Despite the limitations of this short period of observation one year) the results are judged as useful. Collaboration ensures support for colleagues on a daily basis and during critical moments and can encourage appreciation of the nursing profession.

RESUMO

Purpose of this study was to evaluate the modification of some biohumoral parameters in a group of road-race cyclists during a sporting season. The following conclusions can be drawn: at the beginning of physical exercise, an inverse relationship between serum iron and haemoglobin content can be found. This can be probably attributed to the physiological response to fatigue. Hepatic and renal functions were normal during continuous and severe physical stress like Giro d'Italia. This can be due either to correct alimentary and hydric intake and to an appropriate pharmacological therapy.

RESUMO

This work represents the first experimental demonstration that planar molecules tend to travel as a "frisbee" when a gaseous mixture with lighter carriers expands into a vacuum, the orientation being due to collisions. The molecule is benzene, the prototype of aromatic chemistry. The demonstration is via two complementary experiments: interrogating benzene by IR-laser light and controlling its orientation by selective scattering on rare gas targets. The results cast new light on the microscopic mechanisms of collisional alignment and suggest a useful way to produce intense beams of aligned molecules, permitting studies of steric effects in gas-phase processes and in surface catalysis.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine the incidence and case-fatality rate of status epilepticus (SE) in adults in Hessen, Germany, we performed a prospective, population-based study from July 1997 through June 1999. METHODS: All adult patients residing within the zip-code area 35 (area-35) with SE were included. Area-35 had 743.285 adult inhabitants, including 123.353 adult inhabitants of the primary service area of the University Hospital Marburg (PS-area). Patients were reported by 16 hospitals in the area and were prospectively identified and carefully reviewed within 5 days by one of the authors. Based on the crude annual incidence of SE and a rate of underascertainment of 10% determined for the PS-area, the corrected, age-adjusted incidence of SE in area 35, more representative of the population of Germany, was calculated. RESULTS: The crude annual incidence in the PS-area was 15.8/100,000 [95% confidence interval (CI), 11.2-21.6]. The calculated, corrected, age-adjusted incidence of SE in area 35 was 17.1/100,000. It was higher for men compared with women (26.1 vs. 13.7) and for those aged 60 years and older (54.5 vs. 4.2/100,000, p < 0.0001). The etiology was mainly remote symptomatic due to cerebrovascular disease. Epilepsy was previously diagnosed in only 50% of the patients. The case-fatality rate was 9.3%. CONCLUSIONS: Based on our data, at least 14,000 patients would be affected by SE in Germany, associated with approximately 1,300 deaths annually. The incidence of SE in Germany is similar to that found in the white United States population. Furthermore, this study confirms the higher incidence of SE in male patients and in the elderly population. This may be due to a higher incidence of cerebrovascular disease in these subpopulations.
