RESUMO

Oxidation of reactive mine tailings and subsequent generation of acid mine drainage (AMD) have been long recognized as the largest environmental concern for the mining industry. Laboratory studies on utilization of coal fly ash in management of reactive mine tailings have shown reducing water and oxygen infiltration into tailings matrix, thus preventing oxidation of sulphide minerals and acid generation. However, few data from field studies to evaluate the performance of co-placement of mine tailings and fly ash (CMF hereafter) are reported in the open literature. This paper documents the construction and instrumentation of three CMF systems on the Musselwhite mine located in Ontario, Canada and presents results of 3-year real time monitoring. The field data indicates that the CMFs reduced the ingress of water due to cementation generated by hydration of fly ash. It was also found that the electrical conductivity of leachate from CMFs decreased in the early stage of co-placement, compared to the control. With further study, the principle and approach demonstrated in this paper can be adopted as a sustainable technology in the mine tailings management.

RESUMO

AIM: To develop a new high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for simultaneous determination of the combined drugs (ceftriaxone sodium, metronidazole, and levofloxacin) in human urine. METHODS: Ceftriaxone sodium, metronidazole, and levofloxacin were separated on a Kromasil 100-5 C18 (250 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 µm, AKZO NOBEL, Bohus, Sweden) analytical column, using the mobile phase consisted of 1.5 mM KH(2) PO(4) (pH 4.5) with 0.0125% triethylamine-methnol (70:30, v/v). Ceftriaxone sodium, metronidazole, and levofloxacin were detected by a photodiode-array detector at 247, 320, 292 nm, respectively. RESULTS: Under optimal conditions, the effective separation of ceftriaxone sodium, metronidazole, and levofloxacin was achieved. A good linearity with the correlation coefficients more than 0.999 was demonstrated. The detection limits of ceftriaxone sodium, metronidazole, and levofloxacin were 0.05, 0.01, and 0.25 µg/ml, respectively, and the average recoveries in human urine were in the range from 97.73 to 100.7% with the average relative standard deviation (RSD) in the range of 2.5% and 3.0%. CONCLUSION: The proposed method was sensitive, accurate, and rapid. This work may provide a reference for clinical rational drug use and methodology for the pharmacokinetics study of the combined drugs.

RESUMO

The present study proposes a new approach to producing accurate estimates of fall dormancy (FD) in alfalfa in a rapid manner. Using near infrared spectroscopy, the approach produces results fast without causing damage to samples. Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy was applied to measuring the spectra of samples. Then principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted on the measurements. The top ten principal components were selected based on their cumulative contribution rates to build a support vector machine (SVM) model. Detailed analysis and discussions were conducted over their parameter and kernel classifications. The experiment found that when c = 0.339 2 and g = 32, the accuracy of the predictions of the test set can reach 98.182%. Therefore the approach can estimate the FD in alfalfa in a rapid and accurate manner. Moreover, it was compared with other approaches such as principal component regression, partial least squares regression, BP neural networks, and LVQ neural networks. The comparisons have shown that the PCA-SVM model can effectively address the small-sample-size problem and avoid local minimum.

RESUMO

Epistaxis due to ruptured internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysm embedded within a pituitary adenoma (PA) has seldom been reported in the literature. Here we want to elaborate the incidence, mechanisms, clinical manifestations, and treatment strategy for this condition. The first survived case of a patient with epistaxis and pituitary apoplexy due to ruptured aneurysm embedded within PA was reported and the literature was reviewed. A 53-year-old male patient presented to our institution with sudden onset epistaxis and progressive vision loss. Neurological examination revealed bilateral ptosis and dilated unresponsive pupils. A CT scan showed a large mass in the pituitary fossa with bony erosion. MRI revealed a large pituitary tumor and abnormal signal intensity in the tumor. No aneurysm was noted during the pre-operative MR angiography. Abundant arterial bleeding suddenly occurred during urgent transsphenoidal surgery. Digital subtraction angiography confirmed the presence of a 14 mm unexpected saccular aneurysm of right ICA in the cavernous sinus with the dome protruding into the sella turcica. Balloon test occlusion of the right ICA was undertaken and permanent occlusion was performed. The patient recovered well and received bromocriptine and thyroid hormone replacement therapy during the follow-up period. At 14-month followup, the patient had no neurological deficits, no features of ischaemia relating to the right ICA therapeutic occlusion. Our case indicated that epistaxis and pituitary apoplexy could be due to the rupture of an ICA aneurysm embedded in a PA. Clinical suspicion should remain high when evaluating any case of epistaxis and pituitary apoplexy. Optimal treatment should take into consideration individual features of the tumor, aneurysm, and patient. Making the correct diagnosis as well as identifying an appropriate management strategy is critical in the care of such patients.
