RESUMO

Although host responses to the ancestral SARS-CoV-2 strain are well described, those to the new Omicron variants are less resolved. We profiled the clinical phenomes, transcriptomes, proteomes, metabolomes, and immune repertoires of >1,000 blood cell or plasma specimens from SARS-CoV-2 Omicron patients. Using in-depth integrated multi-omics, we dissected the host response dynamics during multiple disease phases to reveal the molecular and cellular landscapes in the blood. Specifically, we detected enhanced interferon-mediated antiviral signatures of platelets in Omicron-infected patients, and platelets preferentially formed widespread aggregates with leukocytes to modulate immune cell functions. In addition, patients who were re-tested positive for viral RNA showed marked reductions in B cell receptor clones, antibody generation, and neutralizing capacity against Omicron. Finally, we developed a machine learning model that accurately predicted the probability of re-positivity in Omicron patients. Our study may inspire a paradigm shift in studying systemic diseases and emerging public health concerns.

The switching behavior of the novel hybrid material (FA)Na[Fe(CN)5(NO)].H2O (1) in response to temperature (T), light irradiation and electric field (E) is studied using in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD). Crystals of 1 display piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, second and third harmonic generation. XRD shows that the FA+ are disordered at room-temperature, but stepwise cooling from 273-100 K induces gradual ordering, while cooling under an applied field (E=+40 kVcm-1) induces a sudden phase change at 140 K. Structural-dynamics calculations suggest the field pushes the system into a region of the structural potential-energy surface that is otherwise inaccessible, demonstrating that application of T and E offers an effective route to manipulating the crystal chemistry of these materials. Photocrystallography also reveals photoinduced linkage isomerism, which coexists with but is not correlated to other switching behaviors. These experiments highlight a new approach to in situ studies of hybrid materials, providing insight into the structure-property relationships that underpin their functionality.

The photocatalytic performance of graphitic phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is strongly influenced by its own microstructure as well as the precursor structure that causes the microstructure changes. In this paper, a composite precursor of sodium chloride and cyanamide (NaCl/CA-2) was obtained by freeze-drying, which possess an aggregated state different from that of the non-freeze-drying method. This new aggregation state with the introduction of sodium ions into the cyanamide lattice results in a higher activation energy of NaCl/CA-2 in the thermal polycondensation process of the molten salt-assisted preparation of g-C3N4, which prevented the condensation of two cyanamides to one dicyandiamide, ultimately obtaining FD-CN with an amino-rich structure. The nitrogen atoms on the amino group can provide the photocatalyst with more unpaired electrons that can participate in the photoexcitation process, further improving its electron-hole separation ability and charge transfer efficiency, thus effectively enhancing its photocatalytic activity. Compared to the original g-C3N4, the photocatalytic activity of FD-CN for the degradation of methylene blue increased 2.19 times.

BACKGROUND: Better prognostic outcome is closely correlated with early detection of bladder cancer. Current non-invasive urianalysis relies on simultaneously testing multiple methylation markers to achieve relatively high accuracy. Therefore, we have developed an easy-to-use, convenient, and accurate single-target urine-based DNA methylation test for the malignancy. METHODS: By analyzing TCGA data, 344 candidate markers with 424 primer pairs and probe sets synthesized were systematically screened in cancer cell lines, paired tissue specimens, and urine sediments from bladder cancer patients and normal controls. The identified marker was further validated in large case-control cohorts. Wilcoxon rank sum tests and c2 tests were performed to compare methylation levels between case-control groups and correlate methylation levels with demographic and clinical characteristics. In addition, MSP, qMSP, RT-PCR, western blot analysis, and immunohistochemistry were performed to measure levels of DNA methylation, mRNA transcription, and protein expression in cancer cell lines and tissues. RESULTS: A top-performing DMRTA2 marker identified was tested in both discovery and validation sets, showing similar sensitivity and specificity for bladder cancer detection. Overall sensitivity in the aggregate set was 82.9%(179/216). The specificity, from a control group consisting of patients with lithangiuria, prostatoplasia, and prostatitis, is 92.5%(468/506). Notably, the methylation assay had the highest sensitivities for tumors at stages of T1(90.4%) and T2(95.0%) compared with Ta (63.0%), T3(81.8%), and T4(81.8%). Furthermore, the test showed admirable detection rate of 80.0%(24/30) for recurring cancers. While methylation was observed in 39/54(72.2%) urine samples from patients with carcinomas of renal pelvis and ureter, it was detected at extremely low rate of 6.0%(8/133) in kidney and prostate cancers. Compared with SV-HUC-1, the normal bladder epithelial cell line, DMRTA2 was hypermethylated in 8/9 bladder cancer cell lines, consistent with the results of MSP and qMSP, but not correlated with mRNA and protein expression levels in these cell lines. Similarly, DMRTA2 immunostaining was moderate in some tissues but weak in others. Further studies are needed to address functional implications of DMRTA2 hypermethylation. CONCLUSIONS: Our data demonstrated that a single-target DNA methylation signature, mDMRTA2, could be highly effective to detect both primary and recurring bladder cancer via urine samples.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is an autoimmune disease that involves damage to the peripheral nervous system. The course of the disease can progress for more than 8 weeks, with frequent incidences of relapse-remission courses. This article reported a rare combination of CIDP with fluctuating symptoms, recurrence-remission, and comorbidity with psoriasis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old male patient with repeated limb weakness and numbness was admitted to the hospital several times in the past six months. He had a history of psoriasis for 6 years, and the medications (clobetasol propionate ointment and calcipotriol ointment) treated for psoriasis were discontinued 1 year ago. During the hospitalization, repeated intravenous injections of human immunoglobulin G (IVIg), immunoadsorption, and secukinumab were performed. Nerve electrophysiology tests, ganglioside autoantibody spectrum tests, and clinical MRC muscle strength scores were performed on a regular basis to confirm the diagnosis of CIDP. The patient was regularly followed up. RESULTS: After repeated rounds of human IVIg and immunoadsorption, the patient's MRC score was increased by ≥ 6 points. The first ganglioside autoantibody spectrum test showed anti-GQ1b IgG ( +) and anti-GM1 IgM ( +) antibodies, and all were negative after re-examination. Finally, the patient was treated with the IL-17A inhibitor secukinumab for psoriasis. During 7 months of follow-up, the CIDP and psoriasis symptoms are relatively stable. CONCLUSION: Combination of IVIg and immunoadsorption was highly effective in treating CIDP complicated with psoriasis. The clinical manifestations of CIDP are diverse. When relapse-remission occurs in the course of the disease, it is necessary to clarify whether it is combined with other autoimmune diseases and should control the autoimmune diseases as soon as possible.

To provide new insights for understanding the influence of B site cations on the structure in chlorometallate materials of the form ABn+Cln+2, we report novel organic-inorganic hybrid metallates (OIHMs) incorporating histammonium (HistNH3) dications and various transition-metal and main group B site cations. Single crystals of OIHMs with the basic formula (HistNH3Mn+Cln+2, M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, Sb, Sn, Pb, Bi) were grown and their structures characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. HistNH3CoCl4, HistNH3ZnCl4, and HistNH3SbCl5 were crystallized in a non-centrosymmetric space group and were subsequently studied with piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). While bulk measurements of crystals and poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF)/metallate composite films exhibited low bulk response values, the surface-measured local response values using PFM were 5.17 pm/V for HistNH3CoCl4, 22.6 pm/V for HistNH3ZnCl4, and 2.9 pm/V for HistNH3SbCl5 compared with 2.50 pm/V for PVDF reference samples. The magnitudes of the d33 coefficient, net dipole, and cation-Cl bond dipole obtained from the density functional theory calculations confirm the higher response in HistNH3ZnCl4 compared to HistNH3CoCl4. Density of states and crystal orbital Hamilton population analysis indicate that the higher net dipole in HistNH3ZnCl4 compared to HistNH3CoCl4 is due to the lower hybridization of the M-Cl bond.

The current study was set out to investigate the mechanism by which silenced long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) colon cancer-associated transcript 2 (CCAT2) modulates the cell growth, migration, invasion, and drug sensitivity of breast cancer (BC) cells to 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) with the involvement of miR-145 and p53. First, high CCAT2 expression was presented in BC cells and tissues. Subsequently, the links between CCAT2 expression and BC clinicopathological features were analyzed. Highly-expressed CCAT2 was linked to lymph node metastasis, positive progesterone receptor, estrogen receptor, and Ki-67 of BC cells. Then, the gain- and loss-of-function approaches were performed to measure the regulatory role of CCAT2 in the biological processes of BC cells. Silencing of CCAT2 suppressed in vitro cell growth, proliferation, invasion, migration abilities, and epithelial-mesenchymal transformation, increased cell apoptosis, and enhanced drug sensitivity of BC cells. Silencing of CCAT2 upregulated miR-145, which was poorly expressed in drug-resistant BC cells. p53 can bind to the miR-145 promoter region and increase miR-145 expression. Upregulation of miR-145 induced by silencing of CCAT2 can be invalidated by p53-siRNA. To conclude, p53-induced activation of miR-145 could be inhibited by CCAT2, while overexpression of CCAT2 could improve the drug resistance of BC cells to 5-Fu.

BACKGROUND: Vitreoretinal lymphoma (VRL) can commonly masquerade as chronic idiopathic uveitis due to its nonspecific clinical presentation. Thus, its early diagnosis is difficult. In this study, new logistic regression models were used to classify VRL and uveitis. Additionally, the diagnostic performance of interleukin (IL)-10, the IL-10/IL-6, and the Interleukin Score for IntraOcular Lymphoma Diagnosis (ISOLD) are evaluated. METHODS: Sixty-nine aqueous humors (AH) (46 VRL, 23 uveitis) and 65 vitreous humors (VH) (49 VRL, 16 uveitis) were collected from a single-center retrospective cohort. Logistic regression models were conducted based on IL-6 and IL-10. The cut-off values, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) curve (AUC), sensitivity and specificity of IL-10, the IL-10/IL-6, the ISOLD, and the models were calculated from the ROC. Furthermore, Spearman's rank correlation analysis was performed to determine cytokine levels in VH and AH. RESULTS: We redefined the cut-off values of IL-10, the IL-10/IL-6, the ISOLD, and the logistic regression models. In AH, the AUC values of IL-10, ISOLD, IL10/IL6, and the model were 0.91, 0.953, 0.952, and 0.967. In VH, they were 0.93, 0.95, 0.954, and 0.954, respectively. IL-6 (r = 0.7844) and IL-10 (r = 0.8506) in AH and VH showed a strong correlation. CONCLUSIONS: IL-6 and IL-10 levels were introduced into new logistic regression models. The diagnostic efficacy of the models improved compared to the indicators mentioned above among Chinese patients. Additionally, the models could predict the probability of VRL more accurately. A strong correlation of cytokine levels showed the great potential of AH as prioritized auxiliary diagnostic for VRL.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the sensitivity of median and ulnar nerve sensory latency differences in diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) at different severities. METHODS: CTS patients were divided into three groups based on disease severity (mild, moderate, and severe). Distal latency of sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) for the median and ulnar nerves was recorded. The sensitivity of SNAP distal latency to CTS and its correlation with CTS severity were analyzed. RESULTS: Significant differences were found in the median nerve sensory action potential distal latency (MSDL) and in the median and ulnar sensory latency difference to ring finger (MUD) but not in the ulnar nerve sensory action potential distal latency (USDL) between CTS and control. The sensitivity and specificity were 92.2 and 99.4% with an MSDL cutoff value of 2.40 ms, respectively, and were both 100% with a MUD cutoff value of 0.33 ms. There was no significant difference in USDL among the CTS and control groups. Significant differences were found in MSDL and MUD among the CTS severities and between mild and moderate CTS, but not between mild and severe CTS or between moderate and severe CTS. Correlations with CTS severity were observed for MSDL and MUD but not for USDL. CONCLUSION: The ulnar nerve of the CTS patients was not damaged. A smaller MSDL reflected median nerve damage, which can be used for the early diagnosis of CTS. MUD correlated with CTS severity with a higher sensitivity than MSDL, which can provide therapeutic insight without pain to patients.

This study used visible/near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology combined with chemometric methods to assess the freshness of pearl gentian grouper. The partial least square discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling-PLS-DA (CARS-PLS-DA) models were used to classify fresh, refrigerated, and frozen-thawed fish. The PLS-DA model achieved better classification of fresh, refrigerated, and frozen-thawed fish with the accuracy of 100%, 96.43%, and 96.43%, respectively. Further, the PLS regression (PLSR) and CARS-PLS regression (CARS-PLSR) models were used to predict the storage time of fish under different storage conditions, and the prediction accuracy was assessed using the prediction correlation coefficients (Rp2), root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP), and residual predictive deviation (RPD). For the prediction of storage time, the CARS-PLS model presented the better result of room temperature (Rp2 = 0.948, RMSEP = 0.255, RPD = 4.380) and refrigeration (Rp2 = 0.9319, RMSEP = 1.188, RPD = 3.857), while the better prediction of freeze was by obtained by the PLSR model (Rp2 = 0.9250, RMSEP = 2.910, RPD = 3.469). Finally, the visualization of storage time based on the PLSR model under different storage conditions were realized. This study confirmed the potential of HSI as a rapid and non-invasive technique to identify fish freshness.

Wastewater generated during mining remains a significant source of antimony pollution, because techniques to quickly and efficiently remove antimony from wastewater do not exist. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a specific type of Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs), was successfully used to remove trace levels (1 mg L-1) of Sb(V) with a high removal efficiency when the ZIF-8 dose was 0.5 g L-1. Scanning electron microscopy-X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) indicated that Sb(V) was adsorbed onto the ZIF-8surface. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of ZIF-8 before and after adsorption of Sb(V) indicated that ZIF-8 was successfully synthesized, and remained structurally stable after Sb(V) was adsorbed. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) both suggested complexation of zinc on ZIF-8 with Sb(V), where removal of Sb(V) by ZIF-8 followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm with pseudo second-order kinetics. Thus, a possible removal mechanism was proposed which involved Sb(V) complexing with the zinc hydroxyl groups on ZIF-8 (Zn-OH-Sb). Practically, ZIF-8, could remove 78.6% of Sb(V) from a mining wastewater containing 20 µg L-1 Sb(V). Furthermore, ZIF-8 could be remain active after repeated uses and could still remove and 42.3% of Sb(V) from wastewater containing 1 mg L-1) Sb(V) even when the ZIF-8 was reused five time. This indicated that ZIF-8 had potential for practical removal of Sb(V) from mining wastewaters.

Chemoresistance represents a major challenge in breast cancer (BC) treatment. This study aimed to probe the roles of LINC00160 in paclitaxel- and doxorubicin-resistant BC cells. Three pairs of BC and adjacent normal tissue were used for lncRNA microarray analysis. Paclitaxel-resistant MCF-7 (MCF-7/Tax) and doxorubicin-resistant BT474 (BT474/Dox) cells were generated by exposure of parental drug-sensitive MCF-7 or BT474 cells to gradient concentrations of drugs. Correlation between LINC00160 expression and clinical response to paclitaxel in BC patients was examined. Short interfering RNAs specifically targeting LINC00160 or TFF3 were designed to construct LINC00160- and TFF3-depleted BC cells to discuss their effects on biological episodes of MCF-7/Tax and BT474/Dox cells. Interactions among LINC00160, transcription factor C/EBPß and TFF3 were identified. MCF-7/Tax and BT474/Dox cells stable silencing of LINC00160 were transplanted into nude mice. Consequently, up-regulated LINC00160 led to poor clinical response to paclitaxel in BC patients. LINC00160 knockdown reduced drug resistance in MCF-7/Tax and BT474/Dox cells and reduced cell migration and invasion. LINC00160 recruited C/EBPß into the promoter region of TFF3 and increased TFF3 expression. LINC00160-depleted MCF-7/Tax and BT474/Dox cells showed decreased tumour growth rates in nude mice. Overall, we identified a novel mechanism of LINC00160-mediated chemoresistance via the C/EBPß/TFF3 axis, highlighting the potential of LINC00160 for treating BC with chemoresistance.

BACKGROUND: The retinal morphological change has been detected in Parkinson's disease. However, the previous studies had a controversial conclusion. The aim of this study was to observe the changes of retinal morphology in patients with Parkinson's disease with different clinical stages based on Hoehn-Yahr stage by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). METHOD: Fifty-three PD patients and forty-one healthy controls (HC) were enrolled. Subjects were assessed for the retinal structure using SD-OCT and general ophthalmic examinations. The PD group was divided into three subgroups by the Hoehn and Yahr scale: H-Y I stage group, H-Y II stage group, and H-Y III stage group. RESULTS: The mean deviation of visual field had a significant difference among the four groups. The macular retinal thickness (MRT) and macular volume (MV) were obviously decreased in PD patients. And the further statistical analysis showed that the difference appeared between the H-Y III stage group and HC group. The other subgroups had no differences compared with the HC group. CONCLUSION: SD-OCT examination can detect the changes in retinal morphology in PD patients, and it may not be found the difference until the patients are in the H-Y III stage (the middle stage of PD).

BACKGROUND: Intravitreal methotrexate has been proven to be an effective treatment method for vitreoretinal lymphoma. However, keratopathy occurs as the major side effect during treatment in most cases. The purpose of this study is to describe the characteristics of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) with intraocular involvement and to attempt to reduce the incidence of keratopathy caused by intravitreal methotrexate. METHODS: The medical records of 22 PCNSL patients with intraocular involvement (33 eyes) were reviewed. Patients were divided into two groups. Group A (22 eyes) received the induction-consolidation-maintenance regimen, which consisted of intravitreal methotrexate injection at a dosage of 400 µg/0.1 ml twice a week for the first four weeks, weekly for the following eight weeks, and then monthly for the last nine months. Patients with a poor systemic condition were assigned to Group B (8 eyes), who were started on the treatment protocol described above and switched directly to monthly injection (9 months) when ocular remission was achieved. RESULTS: Blurred vision (31%) and floaters (25%) were common presenting symptoms. Vitritis was the most common clinical sign and was present in 29 eyes (90%) on B-ultrasound examination. Diagnosis was made by 25G-pars plana vitrectomy, and most diagnoses were diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Ocular remission was achieved after 8.2 (SD = 4.6) injections of methotrexate. The mean VA (visual acuity) was improved from LogMAR 0.65 to 0.3 (P = 0.002). Keratopathy was observed in 21 eyes (66%) after an average of 8.2 (SD = 2.3) injections. With a reduced injection frequency, the incidence of keratopathy was lowered from 86.4% (Group A) to 25.0% (Group B) without ocular recurrence during follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Intravitreal methotrexate is a safe, effective and flexible treatment for PCNSL patients with intraocular involvement. Keratopathy is the most common adverse effect and can be controlled by reducing the injection frequency.

BACKGROUND: Serum ferritin (SF) test has been widely used in clinical practice. However, its reference intervals (RIs) vary depending on the analytical method and ethnic origin. This study was to establish the RIs using indirect method for SF in Chinese adults. METHODS: SF was assayed on Abbott i2000SR analyzer. The SF test results of all health examinees (8913 males aged 18-93 years and 5397 females aged 18-90 years) between December 2010 and April 2019 were obtained from our laboratory information system. After Box-Cox transformation of raw data and exclusion of outliers, parametric and non-parametric approaches were used to calculate 95% RIs. The correlation between SF levels and ages, and the differences in SF levels between subgroups were also analyzed. RESULTS: SF levels in females were significantly different from those in males (Z = 88.96, Z* = 23.17; Z > Z*) and showed a weak positive correlation with age (r = .466, P < .0001). The RIs based on parametric approach in males were 66.12-561.58 µg/L, whereas in all females were 3.59-269.59 µg/L, females aged <50 years 3.26-148.02 µg/L and those aged ≥50 years 17.28-303.27 µg/L. The RIs based on non-parametric approach in males were 65.00-571.37 µg/L whereas in all females were 4.00-254.00 µg/L, females aged <50 years 4.00-152.00 µg/L and those aged ≥50 years 16.00-304.05 µg/L. CONCLUSIONS: Our indirect RIs for SF were markedly different from the manufacturer's recommended RIs and might be more suitable for Chinese adults, which would be helpful in interpreting laboratory data and clinical decision-making.

Strong near-surface electromagnetic field formed by collective oscillation of electrons on Cu nanostructure a shows a strong dependence on geometry, offering a promising approach to boost the light absorption of ZnO photoactive layers with enhanced plasmon scattering. Here, a facile way to fabricate UV photodetectors with tunable configuration of the self-assembled Cu nanostructures on ZnO thin films is reported. The incident lights are effectively confined in ZnO photoactive layers with the existence of the uplayer Cu nanostructures, and the interdiffusion of Cu atoms during fabrication of the Cu nanostructures can improve the carrier transfer in ZnO thin films. The optical properties of the hybrid architectures are successfully tailored over a control of the geometric evolution of the Cu nanostructures, resulting in significantly enhanced photocurrent and responsivity of 2.26 mA and 234 A W-1 under a UV light illumination of 0.62 mW cm-2 at 10 V, respectively. The photodetectors also exhibit excellent reproducibility, stability, and UV-visible rejection ratio (R370 nm /R500 nm ) of ≈370, offering an approach of high-performance UV photodetectors for practical applications.

BACKGROUND: Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88 (E. coli K88) are considered as a major cause of diarrhea and death in newly weaned piglets. Oral passive immunization with chicken egg yolk immunoglobulins (IgY) have attracted considerable attention for treatment of gastrointestinal infection due to its high specificity. In this study it was estimated the protective effect of anti-K88 fimbriae IgY against E. coli K88 adhesion to piglet intestinal mucus in vitro and to investigate the potential use of IgY for controlling E. coli-induced diarrhea in weaned piglets in vivo. RESULTS: E. coli K88 was incubated with IgY for 24 h, and the bacterial growth profiles showed that specific IgY with a concentration higher than 5 mg/mL was observed to significantly inhibit the growth of E. coli K88 compared to nonspecific yolk powder in a liquid medium. Moreover, pretreatment with 50 mg/mL of IgY was found to significantly decrease the adhesion ability of E. coli K88 to porcine jejunal and ileal mucus, further supported by the observations from our immunofluorescence microscopic analysis. In vivo, administration of IgY successfully protected piglets from diarrhea caused by E. coli K88 challenge. Additionally, IgY treatment efficiently alleviated E. coli-induced intestinal inflammation in piglets as the gene expression levels of inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-22, IL-6 and IL-1ß in IgY-treated piglets remained unchanged after E. coli K88 infection. Furthermore, IgY significantly prevented E. coli K88 adhering to the jejunal and ileal mucosa of piglets with E. coli infection and significantly decreased E. coli and enterotoxin expression in colonic contents. CONCLUSION: Outcome of the study demonstrated that IgY against the fimbrial antigen K88 was able to significantly inhibit the growth of E. coli K88, block the binding of E. coli to small intestinal mucus, and protect piglets from E. coli-induced diarrhea. These results indicate that passive immunization with IgY may be useful to prevent bacterial colonization and to control enteric diseases due to E. coli infection. The study has great clinical implication to provide alternative therapy to antibiotics in E coli induced diarrhea.

Superpixel methods are widely used in the processing of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. In recent years, a number of superpixel algorithms for SAR images have been proposed, and have achieved acceptable results despite the inherent speckle noise of SAR images. However, it is still difficult for existing algorithms to obtain satisfactory results in the inhomogeneous edge and texture areas. To overcome those problems, we propose a superpixel generating method based on pixel saliency difference and spatial distance for SAR images in this article. Firstly, a saliency map is calculated based on the Gaussian kernel function weighted local contrast measure, which can not only effectively suppress the speckle noise, but also enhance the fuzzy edges and regions with intensity inhomogeneity. Secondly, superpixels are generated by the local k-means clustering method based on the proposed distance measure, which can efficiently sort pixels to different clusters. In this step, the distance measure is calculated by combining the saliency difference and spatial distance with a proposed adaptive local compactness parameter. Thirdly, post-processing is utilized to clean up small segments. The evaluation experiments on the simulated SAR image demonstrate that our proposed method dramatically outperforms four state-of-the-art methods in terms of boundary recall, under-segmentation error, and achievable segmentation accuracy under almost all of the experimental parameters at a moderate segment speed. The experiments on real-world SAR images of different sceneries validate the superiority of our method. The superpixel results of the proposed method adhere well to the contour of targets, and correctly reflect the boundaries of texture details for the inhomogeneous regions.

This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that dietary supplementation with anti-E. coli, chicken egg yolk immunoglobulins (IgY), may affect early weaned piglet (EWP) intestinal functions and enteric micro-organisms. One hundred and forty-eight ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Duroc) piglets, weaned at age day 21, were randomly assigned to receive one of three diets for 14 days. Treatment group one (control group) was fed the base diet. Treatment group two (antibiotics group) was fed the base diet which was supplemented with 100 ppm colistin sulphate and 15 ppm enramycin; treatment group three (IgY group) was fed the base diet which was supplemented with 500 mg/kg anti-E. coli IgY. The study evaluated the effects on EWPs of IgY on growth, serum biochemical, inflammatory profiles and also digestion content intestinal bacterial populations. Results showed no significant difference in diarrhoea rates between IgY-fed EWPs and antibiotic-treated EWPs. Serum biochemical analysis showed that EWPs fed an IgY-containing diet had both lower (p < 0.05) cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein compared to antibiotic-treated EWPs. Escherichia coli populations measured in IgY-fed EWP ileal contents, compared to the control group, were significantly reduced (p < 0.05). Enterococcus, Lactobacillus, Clostridium and Bifidobacterium populations were unaffected by the IgY treatment. Larger (p < 0.05) Enterococcus populations and lower (p < 0.05) expression levels of heat-stable enterotoxin b (STb) were observed in IgY-fed EWP caecal digesta compared to the control group. Enteric Lactobacillus significantly decreased (p < 0.05) in EWPs fed antibiotics while it was unaffected by IgY treatment. Dietary supplementation with anti-E. coli IgY has the potential to suppress enteric E. coli growth, but not Lactobacillus, Clostridium and Bifidobacterium. This promotes and maintains a healthy EWP intestinal environment. These findings suggest that IgY may be used as an alternative to antibiotics in EWP diets.

Inshore ship detection is an important research direction of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Due to the effects of speckle noise, land clutters and low signal-to-noise ratio, it is still challenging to achieve effective detection of inshore ships. To solve these issues, an inshore ship detection method based on the level set method and visual saliency is proposed in this paper. First, the image is fast initialized through down-sampling. Second, saliency map is calculated by improved local contrast measure (ILCM). Third, an improved level set method based on saliency map is proposed. The saliency map has a higher signal-to-noise ratio and the local level set method can effectively segment images with intensity inhomogeneity. In this way, the improved level set method has a better segmentation result. Then, candidate targets are obtained after the adaptive threshold. Finally, discrimination is employed to get the final result of ship targets. The experiments on a number of SAR images demonstrate that the proposed method can detect ship targets with reasonable accuracy and integrity.
