RESUMO

Even though the physical nature of shear and longitudinal moduli are different, empirical correlations between them have been reported in several biological systems. This correlation is of fundamental interest and immense practical value in biomedicine due to the importance of the shear modulus and the possibility to map the longitudinal modulus at high-resolution with all-optical spectroscopy. We investigate the origin of such a correlation in hydrogels. We hypothesize that both moduli are influenced in the same direction by underlying physicochemical properties, which leads to the observed material-dependent correlation. Matching theoretical models with experimental data, we quantify the scenarios in which the correlation holds. For polymerized hydrogels, a correlation was found across different hydrogels through a common dependence on the effective polymer volume fraction. For hydrogels swollen to equilibrium, the correlation is valid only within a given hydrogel system, as the moduli are found to have different scalings on the swelling ratio. The observed correlation allows one to extract one modulus from another in relevant scenarios.

RESUMO

The vibrational eigenmodes of dumbbell-shaped polystyrene nanoparticles are recorded by Brillouin light spectroscopy (BLS), and the full experimental spectra are calculated theoretically. Different from spheres with a degeneracy of (2l+1), with l being the angular momentum quantum number, the eigenmodes of dumbbells are either singly or doubly degenerate owing to their axial symmetry. The BLS spectrum reveals a new, low-frequency peak, which is attributed to the out-of-phase vibration of the two lobes of the dumbbell. The quantization of acoustic modes in these molecule-shaped dumbbell particles evolves from the primary colloidal spheres as the separation between the two lobes increases.

RESUMO

Spider silks are remarkable materials designed by nature to have extraordinary elasticity. Their elasticity, however, remains poorly understood, as typical stress-strain experiments only allow access to the axial Young's modulus. In this work, micro-Brillouin light spectroscopy (micro-BLS), a noncontact, nondestructive technique, is utilized to probe the direction-dependent phonon propagation in the Nephila pilipes spider silk and hence solve its full elasticity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration on the determination of the anisotropic Young's moduli, shear moduli, and Poisson's ratios of a single spider fiber. The axial and lateral Young's moduli are found to be 20.9 ± 0.8 and 9.2 ± 0.3 GPa, respectively, and the anisotropy of the Young's moduli further increases upon stretching. In contrast, the shear moduli and Poisson's ratios exhibit very weak anisotropy and are robust to stretching.

RESUMO

Controlling thermomechanical anisotropy is important for emerging heat management applications such as thermal interface and electronic packaging materials. Whereas many studies report on thermal transport in anisotropic nanocomposite materials, a fundamental understanding of the interplay between mechanical and thermal properties is missing, due to the lack of measurements of direction-dependent mechanical properties. In this work, exceptionally coherent and transparent hybrid Bragg stacks made of strictly alternating mica-type nanosheets (synthetic hectorite) and polymer layers (polyvinylpyrrolidone) were fabricated at large scale. Distinct from ordinary nanocomposites, these stacks display long-range periodicity, which is tunable down to angstrom precision. A large thermal transport anisotropy (up to 38) is consequently observed, with the high in-plane thermal conductivity (up to 5.7 W m-1 K-1 ) exhibiting an effective medium behavior. The unique hybrid material combined with advanced characterization techniques allows correlating the full elastic tensors to the direction-dependent thermal conductivities. We, therefore, provide a first analysis on how the direction-dependent Young's and shear moduli influence the flow of heat.

RESUMO

There is a high demand from aging people for facial fillers with desirable biocompatibility and lasting filling effects to overcome facial depression. Novel injectable regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) microparticles were facilely printed from a glycidyl methacrylate-modified silk fibroin hydrogel to address this issue. The ß-sheet content and mechanical properties of the RSF hydrogel can be simply modulated by the number of freeze-thawing cycles, and the swelling rate of the RSF hydrogel in saline was negligible. The printed RSF microparticles were uniform, and their diameter was about 300-500 µm, which could be adjusted by the pore sizes of the printed screens. After the injection with a 26-gauge needle, the size distribution of RSF microparticles had no noticeable variation, suggesting that the microparticles could bear the shear strain without breaking during the injection. The in vitro experiments demonstrated that RSF not only had desirable biocompatibility but also facilitated fibroblast migration. The subcutaneous injection experiments demonstrated that the RSF microparticles formed a lasting spot in the injected site. The tissue sections revealed that the RSF microparticles were still distinct on week 8, and blood vessels formed around the microparticles. These promising data demonstrate that the printed RSF microparticles have great potential for facial rejuvenation.

RESUMO

Phononic materials exhibit mechanical properties that alter the propagation of acoustic waves and are widely useful for metamaterials. To fabricate acoustic materials with phononic bandgaps, colloidal nanoparticles and their assemblies allow access to various crystallinities in the submicrometer scale. We fabricated anisotropic crystals with dumbbell-shaped nanoparticles via field-directed self-assembly. Brillouin light spectroscopy detected the formation of direction-dependent hypersonic phononic bandgaps that scale with the lattice parameters. In addition, the local resonances of the constituent nanoparticles enable metamaterial behavior by opening hybridization gaps in disordered structures. Unexpectedly, this bandgap frequency is robust to changes in the dumbbell aspect ratio. Overall, this study provides a structure-property relationship for designing anisotropic phononic materials with targeted phononic bandgaps.

RESUMO

Remote sensing scene classification (RSSC) is a hotspot and play very important role in the field of remote sensing image interpretation in recent years. With the recent development of the convolutional neural networks, a significant breakthrough has been made in the classification of remote sensing scenes. Many objects form complex and diverse scenes through spatial combination and association, which makes it difficult to classify remote sensing image scenes. The problem of insufficient differentiation of feature representations extracted by Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) still exists, which is mainly due to the characteristics of similarity for inter-class images and diversity for intra-class images. In this paper, we propose a remote sensing image scene classification method via Multi-Branch Local Attention Network (MBLANet), where Convolutional Local Attention Module (CLAM) is embedded into all down-sampling blocks and residual blocks of ResNet backbone. CLAM contains two submodules, Convolutional Channel Attention Module (CCAM) and Local Spatial Attention Module (LSAM). The two submodules are placed in parallel to obtain both channel and spatial attentions, which helps to emphasize the main target in the complex background and improve the ability of feature representation. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets show that our method is better than state-of-the-art methods.

RESUMO

Layered nanomaterials fascinate researchers for their mechanical, barrier, optical, and transport properties. Nacre is a biological example thereof, combining excellent mechanical properties by aligned submicron inorganic platelets and nanoscale proteinic interlayers. Mimicking nacre with advanced nanosheets requires ultraconfined organic layers aimed at nacre-like high reinforcement fractions. We describe inorganic/polymer hybrid Bragg stacks with one or two fluorohectorite clay layers alternating with one or two poly(ethylene glycol) layers. As indicated by X-ray diffraction, perfect one-dimensional crystallinity allows for homogeneous single-phase materials with up to a 84% clay volume fraction. Brillouin light spectroscopy allows the exploration of ultimate mechanical moduli without disturbance by flaws, suggesting an unprecedentedly high Young's modulus of 162 GPa along the aligned clays, indicating almost ideal reinforcement under these conditions. Importantly, low heat conductivity is observed across films, κ⊥ = 0.11-0.15 W m-1 K-1, with a high anisotropy of κ∥/κ⊥ = 28-33. The macroscopic mechanical properties show ductile-to-brittle change with an increase in the clay volume fraction from 54% to 70%. Conceptually, this work reveals the ultimate elastic and thermal properties of aligned layered clay nanocomposites in flaw-tolerant conditions.

RESUMO

Photothermal energy conversion is of fundamental importance to applications ranging from drug delivery to microfluidics and from ablation to fabrication. It typically originates from absorptive processes in materials that-when coupled with non-radiative dissipative processes-allow the conversion of radiative energy into heat. Microstructure design provides versatile strategies for controlling light-matter interactions. In particular, the deliberate engineering of the band structure in photonic materials is known to be an effective approach to amplify absorption in materials. However, photonic amplification is generally tied to high optical contrast materials which limit the applicability of the concept to metamaterials such as microfabricated metal-air hybrids. This contribution describes the first observation of pronounced amplification of absorption in low contrast opals formed by the self-assembly of polymer-tethered particles. The dependence of the amplification factor on the length scale and degree of order of materials as well as the angle of incidence reveal that it is related to the slow photon effect. A remarkable amplification factor of 16 is shown to facilitate the rapid "melting" of opal films even in the absence of "visible" absorption. The results point to novel opportunities for tailoring light-matter interactions in hybrid materials that can benefit the manipulation and fabrication of functional materials.

RESUMO

Long-term tracking of nanoparticles to resolve intracellular structures and motions is essential to elucidate fundamental parameters as well as transport processes within living cells. Fluorescent nanodiamond (ND) emitters provide cell compatibility and very high photostability. However, high stability, biocompatibility, and cellular uptake of these fluorescent NDs under physiological conditions are required for intracellular applications. Herein, highly stable NDs encapsulated with Cowpea chlorotic mottle virus capsid proteins (ND-CP) are prepared. A thin capsid protein layer is obtained around the NDs, which imparts reactive groups and high colloidal stability, while retaining the opto-magnetic properties of the coated NDs as well as the secondary structure of CPs adsorbed on the surface of NDs. In addition, the ND-CP shows excellent biocompatibility both in vitro and in vivo. Long-term 3D trajectories of the ND-CP with fine spatiotemporal resolutions are recorded; their intracellular motions are analyzed by different models, and the diffusion coefficients are calculated. The ND-CP with its brilliant optical properties and stability under physiological conditions provides us with a new tool to advance the understanding of cell biology, e.g., endocytosis, exocytosis, and active transport processes in living cells as well as intracellular dynamic parameters.

RESUMO

A sterically π-congested ortho-phenylated poly(p-phenylene) (PPP) has been synthesized with unprecedentedly high molecular weights up to 29 kDa after fractionation, as confirmed by gel permeation chromatography coupled with a multiangle laser light scattering detector. The chain translation diffusion coefficient obtained from dynamic light scattering experiments displayed strong scaling (∼L w -0.8) to the chain contour length, indicating a rodlike shape with remarkably high rigidity of this novel PPP. These results provide an interesting insight into the relationship between the structure and the chain stiffness of PPP-based polymers and challenge the validity of the existing diffusion models in polymer physics.

RESUMO

Controlling thermoelastic anisotropy of liquid crystals (LCs) is important for achieving reliable structural stability and efficient heat dissipation, especially for high-performance LC devices. A solid understanding of the thermoelastic anisotropy and its relation with the LC molecular structure is, however, still missing. Here, we studied the direction-dependent mechanical and thermal properties of 5-n-octyl-2-(4-n-octyloxy-phenyl)-pyrimidine (PYP8O8) in a wide temperature range, covering five phases (i.e., crystalline, smectic C, smectic A, nematic, and liquid), by Brillouin light spectroscopy and temperature wave analysis, respectively. We found that the mechanical anisotropy is much smaller than the thermal anisotropy at LC phases; both anisotropies show strong phase dependence, with the biggest change occurring at the crystalline to LC phase transition; and the anisotropy of the phonon mean-free path correlates with the structural anisotropy of the rigid core of the LC molecule. The analysis of the temperature-dependent thermoelastic anisotropy of LCs yields insights into structure-based phonon engineering.

RESUMO

Metal oxide based polymer nanocomposites find diverse applications as functional materials, and in particular thiol-ene/TiO2 nanocomposites are promising candidates for dental restorative materials. The important mechanical and thermal properties of the nanocomposites, however, are still not well understood. In this study, the elastic modulus and thermal conductivity of thiol-ene/TiO2 nanocomposite thin films with varying weight fractions of TiO2 nanoparticles are investigated by using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and 3ω measurements, respectively. As the TiO2 weight fraction increases from 0 to 90%, the effective elastic longitudinal modulus of the films increases from 6.2 to 37.5 GPa, and the effective thermal conductivity from 0.04 to 0.76 W/m K. The former increase could be attributed to the covalent cross-linking of the nanocomposite constituents. The latter one could be ascribed to the addition of high thermal conductivity TiO2 nanoparticles and the formation of possible conductive channels at high TiO2 weight fractions. The linear dependence of the thermal conductivity on the sound velocity, reported for amorphous polymers, is not observed in the present nanocomposite system.
