RESUMO

Magnesium-lithium-ion hybrid batteries (MLIBs) have gained significant attention since the combination of a dendrite-free and low-cost magnesium anode with lithium-ion storage cathodes. However, the lack of high-performance cathodes has severely hindered their development, limited by the lower operating voltages of electrolytes. Herein, vanadium molybdenum disulfide nanosheets anchoring on flexible carbon cloth (VMS@CC) are constructed as high-performance cathodes for MLIBs, which inherit the electrochemical properties of high-voltage VS2 and high-capacity MoS2, simultaneously. By adjusting the V and Mo atomic ratio, the VMS@CC cathode for MLIBs delivers a record maximum energy density of 275.5 Wh kg-1 with a high working voltage of 1.07 V at 50 mA g-1. Meanwhile, under the synergistic effects of the conductive carbon cloth matrix, abundant hetero-interfaces and defects, as well as expanded interlayer spacing, the VMS@CC cathode displays superior rate capability and long-term cycling stability. Ex situ analyses demonstrate the VMS nanosheets cathode exhibits a Li+/Mg2+ co-insertion/extraction mechanism in MLIBs, following the in situ insertion of organic species in the hybrid electrolyte during the aging process. The fabricated flexible cathode herein provides a new insight into the construction of high-energy density cathodes for MLIBs.

RESUMO

It has been well-established that light-matter interactions, as manifested by diverse linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) processes, are mediated by real and virtual particles, such as electrons, phonons, and excitons. Polarons, often regarded as electrons dressed by phonons, are known to contribute to exotic behaviors of solids, from superconductivity to photocatalysis, while their role in materials' NLO response remains largely unexplored. Here, the NLO response mediated by polarons supported by a model ionic metal oxide, TiO2, is examined. It is observed that the formation of polaronic states within the bandgap results in a dramatic enhancement of NLO absorption coefficient by over 130 times for photon energies in the sub-bandgap regions, characterized by a 100 fs scale ultrafast response that is typical for thermalized electrons in metals. The ultrafast polaronic NLO response is then exploited for the development of all-optical switches for ultrafast pulse generation in near-infrared (NIR) fiber lasers and modulation of optical signal in the telecommunication band based on evanescent interaction on a planar waveguide chip. These results suggest that the polarons supported by dielectric ionic oxides can fill the gaps left by dielectric and metallic materials and serve as a novel platform for nonlinear photonic applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Among the neurological complications of influenza in children, the most severe is acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE), with a high mortality rate and neurological sequelae. ANE is characterized by rapid progression to death within 1-2 days from onset. However, the knowledge about the early diagnosis of ANE is limited, which is often misdiagnosed as simple seizures/convulsions or mild acute influenza-associated encephalopathy (IAE). OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate an early prediction model to discriminate the ANE from two common neurological complications, seizures/convulsions and mild IAE in children with influenza. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included patients with ANE (median age 3.8 (2.3,5.4) years), seizures/convulsions alone (median age 2.6 (1.7,4.3) years), or mild IAE (median age 2.8 (1.5,6.1) years) at a tertiary pediatric medical center in China between November 2012 to January 2020. The random forest algorithm was used to screen the characteristics and construct a prediction model. RESULTS: Of the 433 patients, 278 (64.2%) had seizures/convulsions alone, 106 (24.5%) had mild IAE, and 49 (11.3%) had ANE. The discrimination performance of the model was satisfactory, with an accuracy above 0.80 from both model development (84.2%) and internal validation (88.2%). Seizures/convulsions were less likely to be wrongly classified (3.7%, 2/54), but mild IAE (22.7%, 5/22) was prone to be misdiagnosed as seizures/convulsions, and a small proportion (4.5%, 1/22) of them was prone to be misdiagnosed as ANE. Of the children with ANE, 22.2% (2/9) were misdiagnosed as mild IAE, and none were misdiagnosed as seizures/convulsions. CONCLUSION: This model can distinguish the ANE from seizures/convulsions with high accuracy and from mild IAE close to 80% accuracy, providing valuable information for the early management of children with influenza.

RESUMO

Blue mold induced by Penicillium choerospondiatis is a primary cause of growth and postharvest losses in the fruit of Phyllanthus emblica. There is an urgent need to explore novel and safe fungicides to control this disease. Here, we demonstrated osthole, a natural coumarin compound isolated from Cnidium monnieri, exhibited a strong inhibitory effect on mycelia growth, conidial germination rate and germ tube length of P. choerospondiatis, and effectively suppressed the blue mold development in postharvest fruit of P. emblica. The median effective concentration of osthole was 9.86 mg/L. Osthole treatment resulted in cellular structural disruption, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, and induced autophagic vacuoles containing cytoplasmic components in fungal cells. Transcriptome analysis revealed that osthole treatment led to the differentially expressed genes mainly enriched in the cell wall synthesis, TCA cycle, glycolysis/ gluconeogenesis, oxidative phosphorylation. Moreover, osthole treatment led to increase genes expression involved in peroxisome, autophagy and endocytosis. Particularly, the autophagy pathway related genes (PcATG1, PcATG3, PcATG15, PcATG27, PcYPT7 and PcSEC18) were prominently up-regulated by osthole. Summarily, these results revealed the potential antifungal mechanism of osthole against P. choerospondiatis. Osthole has potentials to develop as a natural antifungal agent for controlling blue mold disease in postharvest fruits.

RESUMO

Chinese olive (Canarium album Raeusch.) is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant, mainly cultivated in Guangdong and Fujian provinces in China (Lai et al. 2022). In October 2023, Chinese olive fruit spots were observed in all the Chinese olive orchards surveyed in Chaozhou city (23.75°N, 116.67°E) of Guangdong, with an incidence up to 15%. Early disease symptoms on fruits appeared as circular or irregular, dark brown to black spots with yellowish lesions, and later the spots slowly coalesced to form large necrotic areas, which seriously affected the fruit marketability. To isolate the causal agent, small pieces (~0.3 mm2) of fruit tissue were excised from the lesion margins, and surface-disinfested with 75% (v/v) ethanol for 1 min, followed by 1% NaClO for 3 min, and rinsed three times with sterile water. The pieces were then placed on potato-dextrose-agar (PDA) and incubated at 27°C. Ultimately, four fungal isolates were obtained with similar morphology phenotypes, colonies initially appeared white with irregular margins and after 4-6 days turned dark gray gradually with dense aerial myceliu. Microscopy revealed conidia were single-celled, hyaline, aseptate, fusiform to subclavate, and measured 18.1-22.5 µm × 6.4-9.3 µm (19.8 × 7.4 m on average, n = 30), which were consistent with those descriptions of Botryosphaeria dothidea (Vasic et al. 2013; Zhang et al. 2023). To further identity the isolates, partial sequences of ribosomal transcribed spacer (ITS), translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF1-α), and ß-tubulin (TUB2) genes were amplified using primers ITS1/ITS5, TEF-F/R, TUB2-F/R, respectively (Xu et al., 2023; Hong et al. 2006). The sequences of four isolates were identical, and those of representative strain GDCZ-1 were deposited in GenBank (ITS, OR584295; TEF1-α, OR685157; TUB2, OR685158). Using Neighbor-Joining algorithm, phylogenetic tree based on concatenated sequences of ITS, TEF1-α, and TUB2 showed that GDCZ-1 clustered with B. dothidea. To fulfill Koch's postulates, pathogenicity tests were performed on healthy Chinese olive fruits using the needle-prick inoculation method. The fruits were wounded with a sterile needle at the equatorial area (depth of 3-4 mm), and inoculated with 10 µL of spore suspension (106 /mL). The control fruits were inoculated with sterile water. Inoculated fruits were placed in sterile plastic containers to maintain high relative humidity (almost 100%) and incubated at 27°C. After 4 days, the inoculated fruits showed similar symptoms with those observed in the field infected fruits, while the control remained asymptomatic. Pathogen re-isolated from the inoculated fruits showed identical morphological characteristics to the original isolate GDCZ-1. As far as we know, fruit rot caused by Alternaria alternata has been recently reported on C. album in China (Shao et al. 2024). To our knowledge, this is the first report of B. dothidea causing fruit rot disease on C. album in Guangdong. Our report will provide crucial information for studying the epidemiology and management of this disease.

RESUMO

In recent years, growing concerns regarding energy efficiency and heat mitigation, along with the critical goal of carbon neutrality, have drawn human attention to the zero-energy-consumption cooling technique. Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) can be an invaluable tool for combating climate change by dispersing ambient heat directly into outer space instead of just transferring it across the surface. Although significant progress has been made in cooling mechanisms, materials design, and application exploration, PDRC faces challenges regarding functionality, durability, and commercialization. Herein, a silica nanofiber aerogels (SNAs) functionalized poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropene) (P(VDF-HFP)) membrane (SFP membrane), inspired by constructional engineering is constructed. As-prepared membranes with flexible network structure combined hierarchical structure design and practicability principal. As the host material for thermal comfort management (TCM) and versatile protection, the SFP membrane features a large surface area, porous structure, and a robust skeleton that can render excellent mechanical properties. Importantly, the SFP membrane can keep exceptional solar reflectivity (0.95) and strong mid-infrared emittance (0.98) drop the temperature to 12.5 °C below ambient and 96 W m-2 cooling power under typical solar intensities over 910 W m-2 . This work provides a promising avenue for high performance aerogel membranes that can be created for use in a wide variety of applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sertoli cell-only syndrome (SCOS) is the most serious pathological type of non-obstructive azoospermia. Recently, several genes related to SCOS have been identified, including FANCM, TEX14, NR5A1, NANOS2, PLK4, WNK3, and FANCA, but they cannot fully explain the pathogenesis of SCOS. This study attempted to explain spermatogenesis dysfunction in SCOS through testicular tissue RNA sequencing and to provide new targets for SCOS diagnosis and therapy. METHODS: We analyzed differentially expressed genes (DEGs) based on RNA sequencing of nine patients with SCOS and three patients with obstructive azoospermia and normal spermatogenesis. We further explored the identified genes using ELISA and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: In total, 9406 DEGs were expressed (Log2|FC|≥ 1; adjusted P value < 0.05) in SCOS samples, and 21 hub genes were identified. Three upregulated core genes were found, including CASP4, CASP1, and PLA2G4A. Thus, we hypothesized that testis cell pyroptosis mediated by CASP1 and CASP4 might be involved in SCOS occurrence and development. ELISA verified that CASP1 and CASP4 activities in the testes of patients with SCOS were significantly higher than those in patients with normal spermatogenesis. Immunohistochemical results showed that CASP1 and CASP4 in the normal spermatogenesis group were mainly expressed in the nuclei of spermatogenic, Sertoli, and interstitial cells. CASP1 and CASP4 in the SCOS group were mainly expressed in the nuclei of Sertoli and interstitial cells because of the loss of spermatogonia and spermatocytes. CASP1 and CASP4 expression levels in the testes of patients with SCOS were significantly higher than those in patients with normal spermatogenisis. Furthermore, the pyroptosis-related proteins GSDMD and GSDME in the testes of patients with SCOS were also significantly higher than those in control patients. ELISA also showed that inflammatory factors (IL-1 ß, IL-18, LDH, and ROS) were significantly increased in the SCOS group. CONCLUSIONS: For the first time, we found that cell pyroptosis-related genes and key markers were significantly increased in the testes of patients with SCOS. We also observed many inflammatory and oxidative stress reactions in SCOS. Thus, we propose that testis cell pyroptosis mediated by CASP1 and CASP4 could participate in SCOS occurrence and development.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Serratia marcescens has attracted increasing attention worldwide as a neglected opportunistic pathogen of public health concern, especially due to its antimicrobial resistance features, which usually cause nosocomial infections in immunocompromised or critically ill patients. METHODS: In our study, four carbapenem-resistant Serratia marcescens (CRSM) clinical isolates were characterized in our hospital from February 2018 to May 2018. The conjugation experiment confirmed the transferability of the carbapenem resistance gene. The types of carbapenem resistance genes were detected by PCR. The homology of the strains was analysed by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The characteristics of the plasmid and environment of carbapenem resistance genes were analysed after whole genome sequencing was performed. Then, we compared the amino acid sequence of the replication initiation protein and constructed a dendrogram by the neighbour-joining method. RESULTS: All four isolates showed carbapenem resistance conferred by a blaKPC-2-harbouring plasmid. They had exactly the same bands confirmed by PFGE and were defined as the homologous strains. The blaKPC-2 genes in all of the isolates were located in a 42,742 bp plasmid, which was located in the core region of antibiotic resistance and was composed of Tn3 family transposons, recombinant enzyme genes, ISKpn6 and ISKpn27. The core region of antibiotic resistance formed a 'Tn3-ISKpn6-blaKPC-ISKpn27-Tn3' structure, which was an independent region as a movable element belonging to transposon Tn6296 and its derivatives. The plasmid had a similar skeleton to incX6 plasmids and a similar amino acid sequence to the replication initiation protein. The plasmid was defined as an untypeable blaKPC-2-harbouring plasmid named the 'IncX6-like' plasmid. CONCLUSION: The four CRSM isolates were mainly clonally disseminated with a blaKPC-2-harbouring plasmid in our hospital. The pKPC-2-HENAN1602 plasmid (CP047392) in our study was first reported in Serratia marcescens, which belongs to an untypeable group named the 'IncX6-like' plasmid. The carbapenem-resistant gene structure surrounding blaKPC-2 as a sole accessory module can be acquired by horizontal gene transfer and might lead to serious nosocomial infection.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Although influenza primarily affects the respiratory system, it can cause severe neurological complications, especially in younger children, but knowledge about the early indicators of acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE) is limited. The main purpose of this article is to summarize the clinical characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological complications of influenza in children, and to identify factors associated with ANE. MATERIAL AND METHODS This was a retrospective study of children with confirmed influenza with neurological complications treated between 01/2014 and 12/2019 at Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center. A receiver operating characteristics curve analysis was performed to determine the prognostic value of selected variables. RESULTS Sixty-three children with IAE (n=33) and ANE (n=30) were included. Compared with the IAE group, the ANE group showed higher proportions of fever and acute disturbance of consciousness, higher alanine aminotransferase, higher aspartate aminotransferase, higher creatinine kinase, higher procalcitonin, higher cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein, and lower CSF white blood cells (all P<0.05). The areas under the curve (AUCs) for procalcitonin and CSF proteins, used to differentiate IAE and ANE, were 0.790 and 0.736, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of PCT >4.25 ng/ml to predict ANE were 73.3% and 100.0%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of CSF protein >0.48 g/L to predict ANE were 76.7% and 69.7%, respectively. Thirteen (43.3%) children with ANE and none with IAE died (P<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS High levels of CSF protein and serum procalcitonin might be used as early indicators for ANE. All children admitted with neurological findings, especially during the influenza season, should be evaluated for influenza-related neurological complications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Influenza-associated acute necrotizing encephalopathy (IANE) can be lethal and disabling and have a sudden onset and deteriorate rapidly but lacks early diagnostic indicators. We aimed to examine the early clinical diagnostic indicators in children with IANE. MATERIAL AND METHODS Acute influenza patients were grouped according to their clinical manifestations: flu alone (FA), flu with febrile seizure (FS), influenza-associated encephalopathy (IAE), and IANE. The clinical features, biomarkers, neuroelectrophysiological results, and neuroimaging examination results were compared. RESULTS A total of 31 patients were included (FA (n=4), FS (n=8), IAE (n=14), and IANE (n=5)). The IANE group, whose mean age was 3.7 years, was more likely to show rapid-onset seizure, acute disturbance of consciousness (ADOC), Babinski's sign, and death/sequela. More patients in the IANE group required tracheal intubation mechanical ventilation and received intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) and glucocorticoids. The alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels in the IANE group were significantly higher than in the FS and IAE groups. The aquaporin-4 (AQP-4) antibody and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were notably higher in IANE patients in the acute stage compared with FS and IAE patients. All patients in the IANE group had positive neuroimaging findings. CONCLUSIONS Early clinical warning factors for IANE include rapid-onset seizures in patients under 4 years of age, ADOC, and pathological signs. Increased AQP-4 antibodies and MDA levels in CSF might contribute to early diagnosis. Early magnetic resonance venography (MRV) and susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) sequences, or thrombelastography to identify deep vein thrombosis, might indicate clinical deterioration.

RESUMO

Eurycomanone is a quassinoid compound that is derived from Eurycoma longifolia, and it is often used as an indicator to evaluate the active ingredients of Eurycoma longifolia. However, Eurycomanone has rarely been reported to have biological activity toward pests. In this study, we evaluated the antifeedant activity of eurycomanone against the diamondback moth(Plutella xylostella), with a non-selective AFC50(the concentration that corresponds to 50% antifeedant action) value and selective AFC50 of 17.5 mg/L and 14.2 mg/L, respectively, which were 2.1-fold (36.9 mg/L) and 2-fold (28.5 mg/L) lower than that of azadirachtin, respectively. In addition, eurycomanone was used to treat the roots of Brassica chinensis L. at a concentration of 100 µg/g for 72 h. The antifeedant index was found to reach 93% by tracking the leaves. After feeding with 20 µg/g eurycomanone, no pupae or eclosion were observed. To explore this mechanism, we used scanning electron microscopy to discover that eurycomanone could prevent the development of taste receptors on the maxillary palp of diamondback moth larvae. Additional electrophysiological measurements showed that eurycomanone exhibited excitatory action to the central taste neurons of diamondback moth and significantly inhibited the GABAA receptor current. Eurycomanone exhibited significant activity as an antifeedant, inhibited growth and excelled at systemic absorption.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of chromosome microarray analysis (CMA) and whole exome sequencing (WES) in fetuses with cerebellar vermis defects (CVD). METHODS: From 2013 to 2019, we performed CMA on 43 fetuses with CVD, who were divided into cerebellar vermis hypoplasia (CVH) group and Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) group according to morphological subtypes. Subsequently, WES was performed on 19 fetuses with normal CMA results to identify diagnostic genetic variants (DGVs). RESULTS: Chromosome aneuploidies and clinically significant copy number variants were identified in 23.3% (10/43) of fetuses, and a significantly higher positive rate was found in fetuses with multiple compared with isolated malformations (36% vs 5.6%, P = .028). STAG2 genes related to Xq25 duplication syndrome was possibly a novel candidate gene for CVD. WES detected eight DGVs in seven genes among the 19 fetuses tested. Autosomal recessive ciliopathies (4/8) caused by TMEM231, CSPP1, and CEP290 mutations, were the most frequent monogenetic diseases, followed by Opitz GBBB syndrome (2/8) caused by MID1 and SPECC1L variants. CONCLUSION: The combined use of CMA and WES has the potential to provide genetic diagnoses in 42% (18/43) of fetal CVD. WES should be offered when CMA results are normal.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: MicroRNA-1207-5p (miR-1207-5p) has been identified as a tumor suppressor in many types of cancer. In our previous research, we found that the expression of miR-1207-5p in cancer tissues and cell lines were both down-regulated, and miR-1207-5p may function as tumor suppressor in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, less research has been done with respect to the expression of plasma miR-1207-5p in CRC or colorectal adenoma (CRA). There was no research regarding the diagnostic ability nor on the prognostic value of plasma miR-1207-5p in CRC. We conducted a preliminary study on the plasma miRNA-1207-5p as a non-invasive biomarker in CRC. METHODS: Plasma miR-1207-5p expression was quantified by qRT-PCR from CRC patients (n = 64), CRA patients (n = 42), and normal controls (n = 36). The blood samples were collected after having been diagnosed by pathology but before surgical resection and radio-chemotherapy. The CRC patients were divided into low and high expression groups according to the mean expression level of plasma miR-1207-5p. The relation of expression levels of miR-1207-5p and overall survival were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier survival curves. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to assess the diagnostic ability of plasma miR-1207-5p in CRC. RESULTS: The expression of plasma miR-1207-5p was obvious down-regulated both in CRC patients (mean ± SD: 0.1661 ± 0.0083) and CRA patients (mean ± SD: 0.2480 ± 0.0162) compared to normal controls. The lower the ex-pression of plasma miR-1207-5p, the stronger the association with advanced TNM stage and positive lymph node metastasis compared with the high expression group (p = 0.027, p = 0.033). The lower the expressions of plasma miR-1207-5p, the shorter the overall survival time for CRC patients (p = 0.0404). There was no significant difference in the relative expression of plasma miR-1207-5p between the preoperative group and postoperative group. ROC analysis showed that the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity were 95.31% and 94.44% (at a cutoff = 0.2990) for CRC patients, 90.48% and 80.56% (at a cutoff = 0.4060) for CRA patients, respectively. The AUC value was 0.9852 (95% CI = 0.9870 - 1.0003, p < 0.0001), and 0.9530 (95% CI = 0.9117 - 0.9944, p < 0.0001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Significant down-regulation of plasma miR-1207-5p was correlated with poor survival and with strong diagnostic ability and may function as a potential biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis of colorectal cancer.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND This study summarizes the characteristics of children screened for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and reports the case of 1 child who was diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection in Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center and the cases of his family members. MATERIAL AND METHODS The medical records of 159 children who were admitted to our hospital from January 23 to March 20, 2020, were retrospectively analyzed. Samples from pharyngeal or/and anal swabs were subjected to reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing for SARS-CoV-2 within 12 h of patient admission; a second RT-PCR test was done 24 h after the first test. RESULTS Of the 159 patients, 151 patients had epidemiological histories, 14 patients had cluster onset, and 8 patients had no epidemiological history but had symptoms similar to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The most common symptom was fever (n=125), followed by respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms. A 7-year-old boy in a cluster family from Wuhan was confirmed with asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection with ground-glass opacity shadows on his lung computed tomography scan, and his swab RT-PCR test had not turned negative until day 19 of his hospitalization. In patients who did not test positive for SARS-CoV-2, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, and adenovirus were observed. A total of 158 patients recovered, were discharged, and experienced no abnormalities during follow-up. CONCLUSIONS For SARS-CoV-2 nosocomial infections, taking a "standard prevention & contact isolation & droplet isolation & air isolation" strategy can prevent infection effectively. Children with clustered disease need close monitoring.

RESUMO

MnFe(P,Ge) is a promising magnetocaloric material for potential refrigeration applications near room temperature. However, its relatively large hysteresis and large temperature/field range of two-phase [paramagnetic (PM) and ferromagnetic (FM)] coexistence displayed in the cyclic first order magnetic transition (FOMT) cause energy losses and reduce the energy conversion efficiency. In this work, we explore the underlying causes of phase coexistence, hysteresis and structural transformation based on determination of the Ge distribution in MnFeP1-xGex (0.10 < x < 0.50) materials. We find that all the samples crystallize in the Fe2P-type structure [P6[combining macron]2m (No. 189), Z = 3] and Ge displays a strong preference for the 2c site. First principles total energy calculations confirm this site preference of Ge, and Ge entering the 2c site changes the electronic structures and enhances the Fe and Mn 3d exchange splitting across the Fermi level as well as the FM exchange interactions, consequently leading to a linear increase in the transition temperature with increasing Ge content. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy reveal the inhomogeneous distribution of Ge in grains, which makes the grains with larger Ge content transform from the PM to the FM phase first when cooling and thus causes the phase coexistence. Maximum entropy method electron-densities show that weakening the coplanar Fe-P/Ge(2c) and Mn-P(1b) bonding strengths across the PM to FM phase transition can release some 3d-electrons to enhance the Fe-Mn FM exchange interaction and result in coupling between the magnetic and structural degrees of freedom. This provides first direct evidence for the dominant role of Fe-Mn exchange interaction in the ferromagnetic ordering and may provide a method to observe the exchange interaction. Diminishing the variances in covalent bonding strengths across the FOMT gives rise to an exponential decay in the heat hysteresis when increasing the Ge occupancy at the 2c site. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a relationship between the variances in covalent bonding strengths and hysteresis is proposed. This material thus provides an example of a FOMT and hysteresis driven by reversible weakening and strengthening of covalent bonds. Based on these, a strategy of designing better magnetocaloric materials is suggested.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The increase in blaNDM-1 in Enterobacteriaceae has become a major concern worldwide. In previous study, we investigated clonal dissemination and mechanisms of resistance to carbapenem in China. METHODS: We carried out retrospective surveillance for blaNDM-1 among carbapenem-resistant enterobacter strains, which were isolated from patients at our hospital by bacterial strains selection, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, species identification, and molecular detection of resistance gene. RESULTS: We found three blaNDM-1 -positive isolates which were identified as Enterobacter aerogenes in clinical patients in China. The blaNDM-1 -positive Enterobacter aerogenes isolates were first found. CONCLUSION: It is important to mandate prudent usage of antibiotics and implement infection control measures to control the spread of these resistant blaNDM-1 -positive strains.

RESUMO

An ultrasound-microwave synergistic extraction coupled to headspace solid-phase microextraction was first employed to determine the volatile components in tobacco samples. The method combined the advantages of ultrasound, microwave, and headspace solid-phase microextraction. The extraction, separation, and enrichment were performed in a single step, which could greatly simplify the operation and reduce the whole pretreatment time. In the developed method, several experimental parameters, such as fiber type, ultrasound power, and irradiation time, were optimized to improve sampling efficiency. Under the optimal conditions, there were 37, 36, 34, and 36 components identified in tobacco from Guizhou, Hunan, Yunnan, and Zimbabwe, respectively, including esters, heterocycles, alkanes, ketones, terpenoids, acids, phenols, and alcohols. The compound types were roughly the same while the contents were varied from different origins due to the disparity of their growing conditions, such as soil, water, and climate. In addition, the ultrasound-microwave synergistic extraction coupled to headspace solid-phase microextraction method was compared with the microwave-assisted extraction coupled to headspace solid-phase microextraction and headspace solid-phase microextraction methods. More types of volatile components were obtained by using the ultrasound-microwave synergistic extraction coupled to headspace solid-phase microextraction method, moreover, the contents were high. The results indicated that the ultrasound-microwave synergistic extraction coupled to headspace solid-phase microextraction technique was a simple, time-saving and highly efficient approach, which was especially suitable for analysis of the volatile components in tobacco.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the effects of cigarette smoking in different manners on acute lung injury in rats. Methods: The commercially available cigarettes with tar of 1,5, 11 mg were smoked in Canada depth smoking (health canada method, HCM) manner, and those with tar of 11 mg were also smoked in international standard (ISO) smoking manner. Rats were fixed and exposed to mainstream in a manner of nose-mouth exposure. After 28 days, the bronchoalveolar lavage fluids from left lung were collected for counting and classification of inflammatory cells and determination of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1ß and TNF-α. The right lungs were subjected to histological examination and determination of myeloperoxidase (MPO) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and glutathione, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Results: In both HCM and ISO manners, the degree of lung injury was closely related to the tar content of cigarettes, and significant decrease in the body weight of rats was observed after smoking for one week. In a HCM manner, smoking with cigarette of 11 mg tar resulted in robust infiltration of macrophages, lymphocytes and neutrophils into lungs, significant increase in IL-1ß and TNF-α levels and MPO activities, and significant decrease in GSH levels and SOD activities and increase in ROS and MDA levels (all P<0.05). Smoking with cigarette of 5 mg tar led to moderate increase in IL-1ß and TNF-α levels, and MPO activities (all P<0.05), and moderate decrease in GSH levels and SOD activities and increase of ROS and MDA levels (all P<0.05). However, smoking with cigarette of 1 mg tar affected neither inflammatory cell infiltration nor IL-1ß and TNF-α levels. Conclusion: Cigarette smoking in nose-mouth exposure manner can induce acute lung injury in rats; and the degree of lung injury is closely related to the content of tar and other hazards in cigarettes.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To identify age risk factors of early recurrent intussusception after pneumatic enema reduction. Management opinions are proposed. METHODS: Two thousand two hundred and ninety-five intussusception patients' medical records from January 2009 to December 2011 were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 2295 patients, the intussusception of 1917 of them was initially reduced by pneumatic enema, with 127 cases recurring within 72 h. The early recurrence rate is 6.62%. The early recurrence rate of patients younger than 1 year old is 2.1% (22/1032), while the rate for those older than 1 year is 11.9% (105/885). The difference is significant (P = 0.0001). There were no significant differences between age groups older than 1 year. One hundred and seventeen cases of recurrence happened within 48 h, which accounted for 92.1% of all early recurrence. Recurrence patients were treated again with pneumatic enema, with a successful reduction in 93.7%. They were followed up for 2-4 years; the long-term recurrent rate was 11.8% (14/119). No patient had poor prognosis because of delayed treatment. CONCLUSION: Intussusception patients older than 1 year tend to have greater early recurrence rate after pneumatic enema reduction; 92.1% of the early recurrent cases happened in 48 h. There is no need to hospitalize patients after pneumatic enema reduction. A repeat pneumatic enema is a good choice before surgical approach.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Communicating bronchopulmonary foregut malformation (CBPFM) type IA is extremely rare and is associated with a high mortality rate. This malformation manifests with communication between the lung and the foregut, and this can lead to esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula (EA-TEF) to the distal pouch. PURPOSE: To detail radiographic findings of CBPFM type IA cases and to summarize an appropriate therapeutic strategy for the management of this disorder. METHODS: Medical data for two patients with CBPFM type IA were retrospectively reviewed with regard to radiographic characteristics, therapy, and outcome. RESULTS: Both cases were initially misdiagnosed due to the presence of EA-TEF. Unusual atelectasis of the lateral lung was observed in chest radiographs, while non-aerated hypoplastic right lung and agenesis of the right main bronchus were detected by computed tomography. A final diagnosis was made by esophagogram. Only one patient survived following surgery. CONCLUSION: CBPFM type IA is a rare condition and is extremely difficult to diagnose. However, CBPFM type IA should be suspected in patients manifesting EA and atelectasis of a unilateral lung on a chest radiograph. The decision to perform a pneumonectomy or bronchoplasty depends on the degree of exiting permitted due to pulmonary damage assessed by computed tomography.
