RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the occurrence and recovery of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) of preventive treatment in the elderly population with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). Methods: A total of 2 583 elderly patients with LTBI were recruited in Zhongmu, Henan Province from July 1 to October 17, 2015. Face-to-face surveys and physical examinations were used to obtain the basic information of the participants, and the body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Fasting venous blood was collected from the participants for blood biochemical and routine blood tests. The random numbers were generated by Excel 2010, and the participants were divided into group A (1 284 cases) and group B (1 299 cases) by simple randomization. Both group A and group B received combination treatment of isoniazid and rifapentine. Group A was treated for 8 weeks with weekly doses of isoniazid at 15 mg/kg and 900 mg for those with body weight ≤50 and>50 kg, respectively, and the doses of rifapentin were 750 and 900 mg, respectively. Group B was treated twice a week for 6 weeks, the doses of isoniazid in patients with body weight ≤50 and>50 kg were [600-(50-body weight)×15] (rounded up) and 600 mg, respectively, and the doses of rifapentin were 600 and 450 mg, respectively. During the treatment period, doctors observed, inquired about and recorded symptoms related to ADRs, and blood biochemical and routine blood tests were performed at 4 weeks after taking the drug, the end of the treatment, and 3 months after the end of the treatment. The patients with ADRs were treated accordingly by severity. The ADRs and graded treatment outcomes of LTBI patients in group A and group B were compared. Results: The ageï¼»M(Q1,Q3)]of the participants was 60 (55,65) years old, and 54.7% (1 412/2 583) were males. There were no statistical differences in age, gender, BMI and baseline biochemical indexes between groups A and B (all P values>0.05). The incidence of ADRs in group A and group B were 18.5% (237/1 279) and 16.3% (209/1 279), respectively, and those with alanine aminotransferase (ALT)≥5 ULN accounted for 0.8% (7/931) and 1.1% (11/987), aspartate aminotransferase (AST)≥5 ULN accounted for 0.3% (3/931) and 0.3% (3/987), respectively, and there were no statistically significant differences (all P values>0.05). There were 7 and 11 patients with ALT≥5 ULN in group A and group B, respectively, and 3 patients with AST≥5 ULN for each group, respectively. After treatment, except for 2 patients with ALT≥5 ULN in group B, ALT and AST levels in all the other patients returned to normal. There were 15 and 10 patients with abnormal white blood cell count in group A and group B, respectively, and 10 and 9 patients returned to normal after treatment. Conclusion: LTBI preventive treatment has a high incidence of adverse drug reactions, but it can be effectively controlled through active monitoring and graded management.

RESUMO

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) virus infection remains the leading cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in China. Oral antiviral drugs have been shown to significantly reduce the HCC risk in CHB patients, but it cannot completely eliminate the HCC occurrence. Therefore, accurate HCC risk assessment and standardized screening in CHB patients are essential for early diagnosis and improved prognosis. In recent years, medical researchers have established a variety of HCC risk prediction models for CHB patients, providing clinicians with a good assessment method. However, due to the differences in the baseline characteristics of each model when deriving and verifying the population, the applicable population and prediction effectiveness are still different, and it is difficult to achieve a "one-size-fits all" . To this end, this paper reviews the common HCC risk assessment model for CHB patients during antiviral therapy, and introduces the monitoring and screening strategies of domestic and foreign guidelines for high-risk HCC patients in order to help clinicians better manage such patients.

RESUMO

Objective: This study aims to investigate the beneficial effects of 17ß-estradiol supplementation on the function of osteoblastic cells through the Sirtuin-1/nuclear transcription factor-κB/matrix metalloproteinase-8 (Sirt1/NF-κB/MMP-8) pathway. Methods: Mouse primary osteoblasts were obtained from neonatal mouse calvaria, and the cells were treated with or without 17ß-estradiol. We first detected the effect of 17ß-estradiol on the function of osteoblastic cells. Then, the changes in estrogen receptor-α (ERα), Sirt1, NF-κB, and MMP-8 were determined after the osteoblasts were treated with 17ß-estradiol. During supplementation with 17ß-estradiol, knockdown of Sirt1 in osteoblasts was used to further measure the changes of NF-κB and MMP-8 and observe the cell function. Results: In primary osteoblastic cells, exposure to 17ß-estradiol improved cell viability and increased the levels of bone formation biomarkers, including osteocalcin, osteoprotegerin (OPG), procollagen type 1 N-terminal propeptide (P1NP), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). In addition, 17ß-estradiol supplement activated ERα and Sirt1 expression and inhibited NF-κB and MMP-8 expression. Moreover, these effects induced by 17ß-estradiol were reversed by knockdown of Sirt1 in mouse primary osteoblasts. Conclusion: 17ß-Estradiol replacement therapy may treat postmenopausal osteoporosis by improving osteoblastic cell function via the Sirt1/NF-κB/MMP-8 pathway.

RESUMO

Maximally entangled two-qubit states (Bell states) are of central importance in quantum technologies. We show that heralded generation of a maximally entangled state of two intrinsically open qubits can be realized in a one-dimensional (1D) system through strong coherent driving and continuous monitoring. In contrast to the natural idea that dissipation leads to decoherence and so destroys quantum effects, continuous measurement and strong interference in our 1D system generate a pure state with perfect quantum correlation between the two open qubits. Though the steady state is a trivial product state that has zero coherence or concurrence, we show that, with carefully tuned parameters, a Bell state can be generated in the system's quantum jump trajectories, heralded by a reflected photon. Surprisingly, this maximally entangled state survives the strong coherent state input-a classical state that overwhelms the system. This simple method to generate maximally entangled states using classical coherent light and photon detection may, since our qubits are in a 1D continuum, find application as a building block of quantum networks.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG; ATCC 53013) on growth performance and hepatotoxicity in calves fed a single dose of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and to investigate the absorption, distribution, and elimination of AFB1 and the hydroxylated metabolite aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in rumen fluid, blood, and excretions. Twenty-four male Holstein calves were blocked for body weight and age and were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups: (1) untreated control, (2) treated with 4.80 mg of AFB1 (AFB1 only), or (3) treated with 1 × 1010 cfu of LGG suspension and 4.80 mg of AFB1 (AFB1 plus LGG). The calves received LGG suspension in 50 mL of phosphate-buffered saline daily via oral administration for 14 d before and on the day they received a single oral dose of AFB1. Body weight was recorded at the beginning of the study (before LGG administration), at the day of AFB1 administration, and at the end of the trial. Rumen fluid, blood, urine, and feces samples were collected continuously for 96 h after AFB1 administration. Average daily gain (ADG) and plasma biochemical parameters were analyzed, and concentrations of AFB1 and AFM1 in the samples were determined for monitoring excretion pattern and toxicokinetics. The results showed that ADG was lower in AFB1-treated animals; LGG administration partially mitigated the decrease in ADG (0.85 ± 0.08 vs. 0.76 ± 0.18 kg of gain/d). The AFB1 treatment increased plasma aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and lactate dehydrogenase levels. Administration of LGG alleviated the AFB1-induced increase in plasma enzymes activity. The excretion patterns of AFB1 and AFM1 were surprisingly regular; toxins were rapidly detected in all samples after a single oral dose of AFB1, and the peak of toxins concentrations was sequentially reached in rumen fluid, plasma, urine, and feces (except AFM1 in rumen fluid), followed by an exponential decrease. The excretion curves showed that AFB1 and AFM1 concentrations were the highest in feces and urine, respectively. Administration of LGG decreased the concentrations of free AFB1 and AFM1 in rumen fluid and reduced the release of toxins into plasma and urine. Toxicokinetic parameters (except for the time of maximum concentration and the terminal half-life) were reduced by LGG administration. In conclusion, the absorption, distribution, and excretion of AFB1 and AFM1 were rapid in calves fed a single dose of AFB1. Urine was the main route for the excretion of AFM1, and the clearance pattern from the peak of concentration was well fitted by exponential decreasing function. Administration of LGG reduced the absorption of AFB1 in the gastrointestinal tract by increasing the excretion via the feces, thus alleviating the hepatotoxic effect of AFB1.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the current status of uterine rupture in pregnant women in China and analyze the impacts of different surgical histories on the pregnancy outcomes of pregnant women with uterine rupture. Methods: The clinical records and pregnancy outcomes of 84 uterine rupture cases were collected and analyzed retrospectively. All cases came from 21 hospitals of 13 provinces (or municipality) in China, dated from January 1st 2014 to December 31st 2015. The total deliveries were 283 614 during the period. For 84 pregnant women with symptomatic uterine rupture, the impacts of different surgical histories on pregnancy outcomes were compared and the results were statistically analyzed. Results: (1) Totally, 84 cases of uterine rupture were with symptoms and diagnosed. The median age, median gestational age were 32.5 years old (23.0-44.0 years old) and 35.7 weeks (9.3-41.0 weeks), respectively. The incidence of uterine rupture was 0.03% (84/283 614). The proportion of patients with cesarean section history was 66.7% (56/84). The proportion of patients with other gynecological surgery history was 20.2% (17/84). (2)Compared with the group of cesarean section history, the group with other gynecological surgery history had a significant increase in complete uterine rupture (16/17 vs 66.1%, P<0.05). Meanwhile, regarding the massive blood transfusion (red blood cell transfusion≥1 000 ml) in the treatment of uterine rupture, patients with other gynecological surgery history had significant more cases than the group with cesarean section history (9/17 vs 23.2%, P<0.05). There was no statistical difference for the other outcomes. Compared with the patients with cesarean section history, the rate of hysterectomy was higher in the group without major surgery history when uterine rupture happened (4/11 vs 7.1%, P<0.05). The incidence of postpartum hemorrhage significantly increased in patients without major surgery history, compared with those with cesarean section (8/11 vs 28.6%, P<0.05). There were no statistic difference for other outcomes. (3) Patients with uterine rupture in the non-abdominal pain group had a significantly increased risk of massive blood transfusion (5/8 vs 27.6%, P<0.05),and the incidence of neonatal asphyxia and hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (4/7 vs 22.2%, P<0.05) were significantly increased. There were no significant difference between two groups regarding the other outcomes, such as preoperative diagnosis, complete rupture of uterus, hysterectomy, postpartum hemorrhage, shock, intrauterine fetal death or neonatal death, admission to neonatal ICU. Conclusions: In addition to considering cesarean section history as one of the known risk factors, patients with non-cesarean section uterine surgery history should also be considered. The management of these patients should be strengthened during their pregnancy and delivery. There might be much more dangerous maternal and neonatal outcomes for the patients with uterine rupture who does not have any abdominal pain during pregnancy and delivery. To reduce the incidence of severe complications, uterine rupture should be diagnosed earlier. The early recognition and diagnosis of uterine rupture helps to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes.

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the risk factors and sonographic findings of pregnancies complicated by placenta increta or placenta percreta. Methods: Totally, 2 219 cases were retrospectively analyzed from 20 tertiary hospitals in China from January 2011 to December 2015. The data were collected based on the original case records. All cases were divided into two groups, the placenta increta (PI) group (79.1%, 1 755/2 219) and the placenta percreta (PP) group (20.9%, 464/2 219) , according to the degree of placental implantation. The risk factors and sonographic findings of placenta increta or percreta were analyzed by uni-factor and logistic regression statistic methods. Results: The risk factors associated with the degree of placental implantation were age, gravida, previous abortion or miscarriage, previous cesarean sections, and placenta previa (all P<0.05), especially, previous cesarean sections (χ(2)=157.961) and placenta previa (χ(2)=91.759). Sonographic findings could be used to predict the degree of placental invasion especially the boundaries between placenta and uterine serosa, the boundary between placenta and myometrium, the disruption of the placental-uterine wall interface and loss of the normal retroplacental hypoechoic zone(all P<0.01). Conclusions: Previous cesarean sections and placenta previa are the main independent risk factors associated with the degree of placenta implantation. Ultrasound could be used to make a prenatal suggestive diagnosis of placenta accreta spectrum disorders.

RESUMO

In individuals with latent tuberculosis (TB) infection, those living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) had a 20-37 times higher risk of developing active TB compared to those without HIV infection. Systematic testing and treatment of latent TB infection are priorities in HIV-infected persons. In China, the prevalence of HIV infection in men who have sex with men (MSM) has gradually increased in the past decade. However, the prevalence of TB infection has been studied sparsely in HIV-infected MSM. Hence, we conducted a pilot study in MSM living with HIV infection in Xi'an city to evaluate TB infection status by means of interferon-γ release assay (IGRA). A total of 182 HIV-infected MSM were included in this study, the prevalence of IGRA positivity was observed to be 8·79% (16/182). IGRA quantitative results were not statistically influenced by the CD4 cell counts of the study participants. However, IGRA positivity was found to be lower than our previously reported data from the general population. This suggests that immunological deficiency might decrease the sensitivity of IGRA and thus increase the number of false negatives. Our primary results, suggesting systematic testing and treatment of latent TB infection together with active case-finding, were equally important for TB control in persons living with HIV infection.

RESUMO

Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been identified as etiologic agent of various cancers for both men and women. However, HPV vaccine has not been recommended for men in China by far. To provide more evidences to promote HPV vaccination among males at high-risk of infection, this study investigated genital HPV genotypes among male attendees of sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic. Male attendees (⩾18 years old) were recruited from STD clinic of Beijing Ditan Hospital. Data on sociodemographic characteristics and self-reported sexual behaviors were collected based on questionnaire. Genital swab specimens were collected for HPV genotypes. Finally, a total of 198 eligible participants were included in the study. Nearly half of them were infected with at least one type of HPV. The prevalence of genital infection among participants with only heterosexual behaviors (50·91%, 56/110) was significantly higher than those with only homosexual behaviors (36·36%, 32/88) (P < 0·001). However, the distribution pattern of the most frequently observed HPV subtypes were found to be similar between these two subgroups. HPV31, HPV18, HPV16 and HPV58 were the most frequently identified high-risk types and HPV11, HPV6, HPV81 and HPV61 were the most frequently observed low-risk types. Our results, although need further verification by larger sample size, suggested that currently available HPV vaccines covered most prevalent HPV types observed in Chinese men. As HPV vaccine has been approved for application in females in China, molecular epidemiological studies and intervention studies among high-risk males should be promoted as well.

RESUMO

The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of different dietary ratios of forage and concentrate (F:C) on ruminal odd- and branched-chain fatty acids (OBCFAs) contents and to evaluate the relationships between OBCFA and ruminal fermentation parameters as well as bacterial populations tested by real-time PCR technique. The experimental design was a 3 × 3 Latin square. Three rumen-fistulated dry Holstein cows were fed three rations with different dietary F:C ratios (F:C; 30:70, 50:50 and 70:30). The rumen samples were collected every two hours (0600, 0800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1600, 1800, 2000, 2200, 2400, 0200 and 0400 h) over three consecutive days in each sampling period. The results showed that rumen OBCFA profiles are significantly (p < 0.05) affected by the dietary F:C ratios. The concentrations of C11:0, C13:0, iso-C15:0, iso-C16:0, iso-C17:0 and C17:0 were higher in the cows fed dietary F:C ratio of 70:30 than those fed with other two rations. However, the concentrations of anteiso-C15:0, C15:0 and total OBCFA were on the lowest level in the high forage diet. Correlation and regression analysis showed that ruminal OBCFAs had strong relationships with ruminal fermentation parameters and bacterial populations. In particular, the iso-fatty acids had potential power to predict butyrate and isoacids metabolized in the rumen, whereas the fatty acids with 17 carbon atoms correlated with ruminal NH3 -N content. The OBCFA contents have different relationships with fibrolytic and starch bacteria in the rumen. C17:0 and its isomers might be used to predict populations of fibrolytic bacteria.

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of testa triticum tricum purif for the treatment of functional constipation(FC) in the late middle-aged and elderly patients. Methods: This study was designed as a multicenter randomized controlled trial. Patients who met Rome Ⅲ diagnostic criteria of FC were enrolled, with age between 55-85 years old. Those with organic diseases were excluded. The patients were randomly allocated to receive testa triticum tricum purif (3.5 g bid) or polyethylene glycol 4000 powder (PEG4000, 10g bid) for 8 weeks, followed by single dose of maintenance therapy for 4 weeks. Follow-up visits were at 4 and 12 weeks after treatment discontinuation. The independent investigators in each center evaluated the constipation symptoms scores. The primary endpoints included rates of significant improvement, improvement and overall improvement at the end of 2, 4 and 8 weeks of therapy, which were calculated by the reduction of symptom scores ≥75%, 50%-74%, ≥25% respectively. Results: A total of 127 FC subjects were enrolled from 3 centers, and 122 cases valid for final analysis. The mean age was (69.4±6.9) years old, including 62 cases in testa triticum tricum purif group and 60 cases in PEG4000 group. The demographic data, constipated symptoms scores and proportion of FC subtypes at baseline were comparable. The rates of significant improvement, improvement and overall improvement in testa triticum tricum purif and PEG4000 groups at the end of 2, 4 and 8 weeks were 37.70% (23/61) vs 59.32% (35/59) (P=0.018), 57.38% (35/61) vs 74.14% (43/58) (P=0.054), and 64.41% (38/59) vs 79.31% (46/58) (P=0.073) respectively. Testa triticum tricum purif therapy significantly improved the proportion of spontaneous bowel movement(SBM) ≥3 times/week from 43.55% (27/62) to 80.33% (49/61), 83.61% (51/61) and 93.22% (55/59) at 2, 4, and 8 weeks respectively (all P<0.01), which were comparable with PEG4000 group (all P>0.05). The proportion of normalized stool forms in study group was significant higher than that of control group at the end of 8 weeks [86.44% (51/59) vs 67.24% (39/58), P=0.014]. Only one patient complained mild abdominal distension during testa triticum tricum purif therapy. Conclusions: The efficacy of testa triticum tricum purif for the treatment of FC in late middle-aged and older patients is comparable with osmotic laxatives PEG4000, which has significant effect on normalization of fecal forms and reliable safety.

RESUMO

Two experiments were conducted to reveal the effects of grain-induced subacute rumen acidosis (SARA) on thiamine status in blood and rumen fluid in dairy cows. In both experiments, 6 multiparous, rumen-fistulated Holstein dairy cows were used in a 2-treatment, 2-period crossover design. Each experimental period consisted of 21d (total of 42d). Experiment 1 was to investigate the effects of SARA on thiamine status in blood and rumen fluid. Treatments were either control (20% starch, dry matter basis) or SARA-inducing diet (SAID, 33.2% starch, dry matter basis). In experiment 2, the effects of dietary thiamine supplementation on attenuating SARA and ruminal fermentation characteristics in dairy cows were studied. All cows received the same SAID diet during the whole experimental period; treatments were with or without thiamine (180mg of thiamine/kg of dry matter intake). In both experiments, rumen fluid samples were collected at 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12h after morning feeding on d 21 and 42 of the experiments for measurement of pH, thiamine, volatile fatty acid, and lactate contents. Peripheral blood was also collected at 3h after morning feeding on d 21 and 42 to measure thiamine, carbohydrate metabolites, and enzyme activities. In experiment 1, cows fed the SAID diet had lower ruminal and plasma thiamine concentrations and higher lactate than cows fed the control diet. The ruminal thiamine contents were positively related to pH and the concentrations of acetate in the rumen, and negatively correlated with the lactate contents. Experiment 2 demonstrated that ruminal pH and the concentrations of thiamine, acetate, and total volatile fatty acids in the rumen were increased, whereas ruminal lactate contents were reduced by thiamine supplementation. The concentrations of lactate and the activity of lactate dehydrogenase in blood were reduced in the thiamine supplemented group, and the opposite was true for the nonesterified fatty acids and α-ketoneglutarate dehydrogenase contents. In conclusion, the thiamine status was affected by SARA in dairy cows and ruminal infusion of thiamine could help attenuate SARA by improving theproportions of ruminal volatile fatty acids and reducing lactate contents in rumen fluid and blood.

RESUMO

Light-emitting diode (LED) lights are becoming more affordable for agricultural applications. Despite many lab-scale studies concerning impact of LED on poultry, little research has been documented under field production conditions, especially for laying hens. This 15-month field study was carried out to evaluate the effects of LED vs. fluorescent (FL) lights on laying hens (Dekalb white breed) using 4 (2 pairs) aviary hen houses each at a nominal capacity of 50,000 hens. The evaluation was done regarding operational characteristics of the lights and hen production traits. The results show that spatial distribution of the LED light was less uniform than that of the FL light. Light intensity of the LED light decreased by 27% after 3,360 h use but remained quite steady from 3,360 to 5,760 h use. Eleven out of 762 (1.44%) LED lamps (new at onset of the study) in the 2 houses failed during the 15-month experiment period. The neck area of the LED lamp was hottest, presumably the primary reason for the lamp failure as cracks were noticed in the neck region of all failed LED lamps. No differences were observed in egg weight, hen-day egg production, feed use, and mortality rate between LED and FL regimens. However, hens under the FL had higher eggs per hen housed and better feed conversion than those under the LED during 20 to 70 wk production (P < 0.05). Hens under the LED tended to have less feather uniformity and insulation than those under the FL (P < 0.05). Moreover, hens under the LED showed a larger median avoidance distance than those under the FL at 36 wk age (P < 0.05), indicating that hens under the LED were more alert; but no difference at 60 wk age. More comparative research to quantify behavioral and production responses of different breeds of hens to LED vs. FL lighting seems warranted.

RESUMO

In this 60-wk study, egg quality, egg shelf-life, egg cholesterol content, total yolk lipids, and yolk fatty acid composition of eggs produced by Dekalb white laying hens in commercial aviary houses with either light-emitting diode (LED) or fluorescent (FL) lighting were compared. All parameters were measured at 27, 40, and 60 wk of age, except for egg shelf-life, which was compared at 50 wk of age. The results showed that, compared to the FL regimen, the LED regimen resulted in higher egg weight, albumen height, and albumen weight at 27 wk of age, thicker shells at 40 wk of age, but lower egg weight at 60 wk of age. Egg quality change was similar between the lighting regimens during the 62-d egg storage study, indicating that LED lighting did not influence egg shelf-life. Eggs from both lighting regimens had similar cholesterol content. However, cholesterol concentration of the yolk (15.9 to 21.0 mg cholesterol/g wet weight yolk) observed in this study was higher than that of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) database (10.85 mg/g). No significant differences in total lipids or fatty acid composition of the yolks were detected between the two lighting regimens.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the bowel symptoms and psychological status of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with diarrhea (IBS-D), and to verify whether sigmoid colon mucosal mast cells (MCs) and their activation have effect on the symptoms and psychological status of IBS-D patients. METHODS: Patients meeting Rome Ⅲ diagnostic and subtyping criteria of IBS-D who visited the outpatient clinic of gastroenterology of Peking Union Medical College Hospital were consecutively enrolled between July 2009 and June 2012. IBS symptoms questionnaire was completed using face-to-face interview, and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA)/ Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) were administrated to evaluate psychological status, both by well-trained investigators. Mast cell tryptase monoclonal antibody was used for immunohistochemical staining to detect MCs and degranulated MCs in mucosal biopsy of sigmoid colon. MCs and degranulated MCs were blindly counted by a senior pathologist, and presented as number of cells in high power field (HPF) and percentage of activated MCs. Correlation analysis was performed using Spearman rank correlation analysis. RESULTS: Ninety-seven patients with IBS-D were enrolled in this study, with mean age of (44±11) years. 70.10%(68 cases) of the IBS-D patients had comorbid anxiety and/or depression. The median total numbers of MCs, activated MCs, and percentage of activated MCs in sigmoid mucosa were 11.60 (7.09)/HPF, 2.00 (1.40) /HPF, and 17.50% (10.90%), respectively. Patients having abdominal pain/discomfort before bowel movement "every day with intermediate to high severity" had significantly larger numbers of total MCs in sigmoid colon compared with those with pain or discomfort "not every day and mild" [13.80(4.85)vs 7.60(5.90)/HPF, P=0.019]; the patient having "frequent" urge to have a bowel movement and mushy stools showed significantly higher percentage of activated MCs in sigmoid colon mucosa compared to those having the symptoms "some of the time" [18.75%(9.12%) vs 14.50%(13.14%), P=0.031; 21.33%(7.43%)vs 11.51%(10.65%)vs 18.42%(8.61%), P=0.030]. There was a positive correlation between the bowel movement during IBS-D onset and the percentage of activated MCs (r=0.221, P=0.030). There were no statistically significant differences in the total number of MCs and percentage of activated MCs between the patients with anxiety/depression and those without anxiety/depression (P=0.255, P=0.315). Scores of HAMA and HAMD were found not correlated with either total MCs number or percentage of activated MCs in sigmoid colon mucosa(all P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The majority of IBS-D patients had comorbid anxiety and/or depression. The total number and activation status of MCs in sigmoid colon mucosa might be related with some intestinal symptoms in IBS-D patients. Psychological disorders might influence the pathogenesis and regression of IBS-D through brain-gut axis other than MCs in sigmoid colon mucosa.

RESUMO

We show that coadsorbed oxygen atoms have a dramatic influence on the CO desorption dynamics from Ru(0001). In contrast to the precursor-mediated desorption mechanism on Ru(0001), the presence of surface oxygen modifies the electronic structure of Ru atoms such that CO desorption occurs predominantly via the direct pathway. This phenomenon is directly observed in an ultrafast pump-probe experiment using a soft x-ray free-electron laser to monitor the dynamic evolution of the valence electronic structure of the surface species. This is supported with the potential of mean force along the CO desorption path obtained from density-functional theory calculations. Charge density distribution and frozen-orbital analysis suggest that the oxygen-induced reduction of the Pauli repulsion, and consequent increase of the dative interaction between the CO 5σ and the charged Ru atom, is the electronic origin of the distinct desorption dynamics. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of CO desorption from Ru(0001) and oxygen-coadsorbed Ru(0001) provide further insights into the surface bond-breaking process.

RESUMO

Passive grain boundaries (GBs) are essential for polycrystalline solar cells to reach high efficiency. However, the GBs in Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 have less favorable defect chemistry compared to CuInGaSe2. Here, using scanning probe microscopy we show that lithium doping of Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 changes the polarity of the electric field at the GB such that minority carrier electrons are repelled from the GB. Solar cells with lithium-doping show improved performance and yield a new efficiency record of 11.8% for hydrazine-free solution-processed Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4. We propose that lithium competes for copper vacancies (forming benign isoelectronic LiCu defects) decreasing the concentration of ZnCu donors and competes for zinc vacancies (forming a LiZn acceptor that is likely shallower than CuZn). Both phenomena may explain the order of magnitude increase in conductivity. Further, the effects of lithium doping reported here establish that extrinsic species are able to alter the nanoscale electric fields near the GBs in Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4. This will be essential for this low-cost Earth abundant element semiconductor to achieve efficiencies that compete with CuInGaSe2 and CdTe.

RESUMO

To comprehensively assess conventional vs. some alternative laying-hen housing systems under U.S. production conditions, a multi-institute and multi-disciplinary project, known as the Coalition for Sustainable Egg Supply (CSES) study, was carried out at a commercial egg production farm in the Midwestern United States over two single-cycle production flocks. The housing systems studied include a conventional cage house (200,000 hen capacity), an aviary house (50,000 hen capacity), and an enriched colony house (50,000 hen capacity). As an integral part of the CSES project, continual environmental monitoring over a 27-month period described in this paper quantifies indoor gaseous and particulate matter concentrations, thermal environment, and building ventilation rate of each house. Results showed that similar indoor thermal environments in all three houses were maintained through ventilation management and environmental control. Gaseous and particulate matter concentrations of the enriched colony house were comparable with those of the conventional cage house. In comparison, the aviary house had poorer indoor air quality, especially in wintertime, resulting from the presence of floor litter (higher ammonia levels) and hens' activities (higher particulate matter levels) in it. Specifically, daily mean indoor ammonia concentrations had the 95% confidence interval values of 3.8 to 4.2 (overall mean of 4.0) ppm for the conventional cage house; 6.2 to 7.2 (overall mean of 6.7) ppm for the aviary house; and 2.7 to 3.0 (overall mean of 2.8) ppm for the enriched colony house. The 95% confidence interval (overall mean) values of daily mean indoor carbon dioxide concentrations were 1997 to 2170 (2083) ppm for the conventional cage house, 2367 to 2582 (2475) ppm for the aviary house, and 2124 to 2309 (2216) ppm for the enriched colony house. Daily mean indoor methane concentrations were similar for all three houses, with 95% confidence interval values of 11.1 to 11.9 (overall mean of 11.5) ppm. The 95% confidence interval values (overall mean) of daily mean PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations, in mg/m3, were, respectively, 0.57 to 0.61 (0.59) and 0.033 to 0.037 (0.035) for the conventional cage house, 3.61 to 4.29 (3.95) and 0.374 to 0.446 (0.410) for the aviary house, and 0.42 to 0.46 (0.44) and 0.054 to 0.059 (0.056) for the enriched colony house. Investigation of mitigation practices to improve indoor air quality of the litter-floor aviary housing system is warranted.

RESUMO

The US egg industry is exploring alternative housing systems for laying hens. However, limited published research related to cage-free aviary systems and enriched colony cages exists related to production, egg quality, and hen nutrition. The laying hen's nutritional requirements and resulting productivity are well established with the conventional cage system, but diminutive research is available in regards to alternative housing systems. The restrictions exist with limited availability of alternative housing systems in research settings and the considerable expense for increased bird numbers in a replicate due to alternative housing system design. Therefore, the objective of the current study was to evaluate the impact of nutrient and energy intake on production and egg quality parameters from laying hens housed at a commercial facility. Lohmann LSL laying hens were housed in three systems: enriched colony cage, cage-free aviary, and conventional cage at a single commercial facility. Daily production records were collected along with dietary changes during 15 production periods (28-d each). Eggs were analyzed for shell strength, shell thickness, Haugh unit, vitelline membrane properties, and egg solids each period. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) coupled with a principal components analysis (PCA) approach was utilized to assess the impact of nutritional changes on production parameters and monitored egg quality factors. The traits of hen-day production and mortality had a response only in the PCA 2 direction. This finds that as house temperature and Met intake increases, there is an inflection point at which hen-day egg production is negatively effected. Dietary changes more directly influenced shell parameters, vitelline membrane parameters, and egg total solids as opposed to laying hen housing system. Therefore, further research needs to be conducted in controlled research settings on laying hen nutrient and energy intake in the alternative housing systems and resulting impact on egg quality measures.

RESUMO

This paper is an integral part of the special publication series that arose from the multidisciplinary and multi-institutional project of the Coalition for Sustainable Egg Supply (CSES). The CSES project involves 3 housing systems for egg production at the same research farm site in the Midwest, USA, namely, a conventional cage (CC) house, an aviary (AV) house, and an enriched colony (EC) house. The CC house (141.4 m L×26.6 m W×6.1 m H) had a nominal capacity of 200,000 hens (6 hens in a cage at a stocking density of 516 cm2/hen), and the cages were arranged in 10 rows, 8 tiers per cage row, with a perforated aisle walkway at 4-tier height. The AV house (154.2 m L×21.3 m W×3.0 m H) and the EC house (154.2 m L×13.7 m W×4.0 m H) each had a nominal capacity of 50,000 hens. The AV house had 6 rows of aviary colonies, and the EC house had 5 rows of 4-tier enriched colonies containing perches, nestbox, and scratch pads (60 hens per colony at a stocking density of 752 cm2/hen). The overarching goal of the CSES project, as stated in the opening article of this series, was to comprehensively evaluate the 3 egg production systems from the standpoints of animal behavior and well-being, environmental impact, egg safety and quality, food affordability, and worker health. So that all the area-specific papers would not have to repeat a detailed description of the production systems and the management practices, this paper is written to provide such a description and to be used as a common reference for the companion papers.
