RESUMO

The practical application of Li-CO2 batteries is significantly hindered by high charge potential and short lifespan, mainly due to sluggish reaction kinetics and inadequate reaction reversibility. Homogeneous catalysts added to the electrolyte provide a promising strategy to address these issues. In this work, the third-generation Grubbs catalyst (G-III), which is efficient for olefin metathesis reactions, has been adopted as a homogeneous catalyst for Li-CO2 batteries. Batteries with G-III exhibited a low overpotential of 0.86 V and a lifespan of 1300 h at a current density of 300 mA g-1. Even at a high current density of 2000 mA g-1, the batteries remained stable for over 300 cycles, with an initial overpotential of 1.11 V. A two-step discharge/charge reaction involving Li2C2O4 as an intermediate was well illustrated, attributed to both low overpotentials and high specific capacity. These findings provide insights into catalyst selection and mechanism analysis for Li-CO2 batteries, offering practical strategies for Li-CO2 battery performance enhancement and practical applications.

RESUMO

The self-assembled structure has a significant impact on the performance of ion conductors. We prepared a new type of electrolyte with self-assembled structures from an azobenzene-based liquid crystalline (LC) monomer and its corresponding polymer. By doping different amounts of monomers and lithium salt LiTFSI, the self-assembled nanostructure of the electrolyte was changed from lamellae to double gyroid. The ionic conductivity of the azobenzene-based electrolytes with the double gyroid structure was 1.64 × 10-4 S cm-1, higher than most PEO-based polymer electrolytes. The azobenzene-based system provides a new strategy to design solid electrolytes with self-assembled structures that may be potentially used in solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence linking the age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (aCCI), an assessment tool for multimorbidity, to fragility fracture and fracture-related postoperative complications. However, the role of multimorbidity in osteoporosis has not yet been thoroughly evaluated. We aimed to investigate the association between aCCI and the risk of osteoporosis in older adults at moderate to high risk of falling. METHODS: A total of 947 men were included from January 2015 to August 2022 in a hospital in Beijing, China. The aCCI was calculated by counting age and each comorbidity according to their weighted scores, and the participants were stratified into two groups by aCCI: low (aCCI < 5), and high (aCCI ≥5). The Kaplan Meier method was used to assess the cumulative incidence of osteoporosis by different levels of aCCI. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to estimate the association of aCCI with the risk of osteoporosis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was adapted to assess the performance for aCCI in osteoporosis screening. RESULTS: At baseline, the mean age of all patients was 75.7 years, the mean BMI was 24.8 kg/m2, and 531 (56.1%) patients had high aCCI while 416 (43.9%) were having low aCCI. During a median follow-up of 6.6 years, 296 participants developed osteoporosis. Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that participants with high aCCI had significantly higher cumulative incidence of osteoporosis compared with those had low aCCI (log-rank test: P < 0.001). When aCCI was examined as a continuous variable, the multivariable-adjusted model showed that the osteoporosis risk increased by 12.1% (HR = 1.121, 95% CI 1.041-1.206, P = 0.002) as aCCI increased by one unit. When aCCI was changed to a categorical variable, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios associated with different levels of aCCI [low (reference group) and high] were 1.00 and 1.557 (95% CI 1.223-1.983) for osteoporosis (P <  0.001), respectively. The aCCI (cutoff ≥5) revealed an area under ROC curve (AUC) of 0.566 (95%CI 0.527-0.605, P = 0.001) in identifying osteoporosis in older fall-prone men, with sensitivity of 64.9% and specificity of 47.9%. CONCLUSIONS: The current study indicated an association of higher aCCI with an increased risk of osteoporosis among older fall-prone men, supporting the possibility of aCCI as a marker of long-term skeletal-related adverse clinical outcomes.

RESUMO

Construction of sub-5 nm long-range ordered structures through self-assembly has received increasing attention. Herein, a series of ODMS-based thermotropic liquid crystals (LCs) containing perylene diimide (PDI) were designed and synthesized. These LCs can form ordered nanostructures with periodic sizes around 5 nm including smectic J (SmJ), oblique columnar (Colob ), and hexagonal columnar (Colh ) phases with change in the volume fraction of ODMS, where the layer spacing of the SmJ phase is less than 5 nm. Thin films with parallel oriented nanolines with line width less than 5 nm can be obtained on PDMS-modified silicon substrates by spin-casting and simple thermal annealing processes. Moreover, owing to the strong π-π interaction between PDI cores, these nanolines are long-range ordered with uniaxial orientation in relatively large areas (1.5×1.5 µm2 ) with over 300 continuous microdomains without pre-patterning. These nanostructures provide the possibility of preparing nanotemplates by oxygen plasma etching.

RESUMO

The preparation of sub-5-nm ordered structures is very important to the development of today's nanotechnology. Block molecules have the potential to form structures with significantly small characteristic dimensions. Herein two novel organic-inorganic block molecules composed of a hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) core and two oligo(dimethylsiloxane) (ODMS) tails with C2 symmetry are reported. A hierarchical lamello-columnar structure with a two-dimensional rectangular lattice where HBC cores adopt a tilted arrangement was obtained from their bulk self-assembly. The feature sizes are all below 5 nm and can be regulated via the number of ODMS chains. Sub-5-nm line structures were obtained through spin-coating of the block molecules onto silicon substrates modified with poly(dimethylsiloxane). As organic-inorganic hybrid materials, these block molecules may be further applied in sub-5-nm nanopatterning.

RESUMO

Photo-induced alignment of the thin-film morphologies of azobenzene-containing block copolymers (BCPs) is an effective method to obtain a uniaxial pattern of nanocylinders. Although film thickness is an important factor affecting the self-assembly of BCP thin films, the influence of film thickness on the photo-induced alignment of BCP thin-film morphology has never been systematically studied. Herein, we report the thickness-dependent photo-aligned film morphologies of the BCP containing an azobenzene-based liquid crystalline polymer and a poly(ionic liquid) (PIL), with a perfect uniaxial pattern of PIL nanocylinders. For films aligned with the unpolarized light (UPL), the out-of-plane PIL nanocylinders can be obtained in the film with a thickness of only 1L0 (∼30 nm, where L0 is the layer spacing of the hexagonally packed cylinder array), which is far lower than the thickness (more than 4L0) of the thermally annealed film needed to obtain the same morphology. This change is attributed to the orientation effect of UPL on azobenzene mesogens that suppresses the excluded volume effect. For the films aligned with linearly polarized light (LPL), to take advantage of the excluded volume effect to obtain the planar orientation of azobenzene mesogens, the thickness should be controlled to be no more than 3L0 to achieve an in-plane uniaxial alignment of PIL nanocylinders. The above relationship between the morphology and thickness of photo-aligned film eliminates the obstacles encountered in preparing films with well-ordered photo-aligned morphologies.

RESUMO

The structural control of block copolymer (BCP) particles, which determines their properties and utilities, is quite important. Understanding the structural relationship between solution-cast samples and polymer particles in a confined space is necessary to precisely regulate the internal structure of polymer particles. Therefore, a facile method by choosing an appropriate selective solvent is reported to prepare spherical polymer particles with ordered network structures. The rod-coil BCP, poly(dimethylsiloxane)-b-poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)-oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PDMS-b-PMPCS), was chosen as a model polymer because of its strong phase segregation ability. First, the structures of the BCP with a thermodynamically stable lamellar structure cast from different selective solvents were systematically studied. Then, a polymer particle with the same internal structure as that of the solution-cast sample can be easily prepared by self-assembling in an emulsion confined space. The relatively large particle size is of importance in this process because the large value of the particle size to periodicity ratio can provide a weak confined environment. This method helps us understand the inherent self-assembling mechanism of polymer particles in an emulsion confined space and accurately control the internal structure of the polymer particle obtained.

RESUMO

The preparation of 3D functional isolated mesoscopic assemblies remains a challenge in the self-assembly of polymers. Here, well-defined 3D hexagonal and hexagram prisms with uniform dimensions are acquired by the crystallization of the inclusion complex composed of a crystalline molecule tris-o-phenylenedioxycyclotriphosphazene (TPP) and a block copolymer. The crystalline TPP plays an important role in the self-assembling process. The faceted morphologies of the hexagonal and hexagram prisms are infrequent in the self-assembly field of soft materials. The formation of the prisms experiences a 3D growth mechanism. The epitaxial growth, accompanied by the heterogeneous nucleation in the edges, yields the growth of inclusion crystals. This study provides a path to construct well-defined polymeric soft materials with broad utility based on numerous supramolecular complexes.

RESUMO

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a long-term and inflammatory disorder featured by cartilage erosion. Here, we describe nomilin (NOM), a triterpenoid with inflammation modulatory properties in variety of disorders. In this study, we demonstrated the latent mechanism of NOM in alleviating the progress of OA both in vitro and in vivo studies. The results showed that NOM pre-treatment suppressed the IL-1ß-induced over-regulation of pro-inflammation factors, such as NO, IL-6, PGE2 , iNOS, TNF-α and COX-2. Moreover, NOM also down-regulates the degradation of ECM induced by IL-1ß. Mechanistically, the NOM suppressed NF-κB signalling via disassociation of Keap1-Nrf2 in chondrocytes. Furthermore, NOM delays the disease progression in the mouse OA model. To sum up, this research indicated NOM possessed a new potential therapeutic option in osteoarthritis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The efficacy and safety of spinal anesthesia by intrathecal dexmedetomidine (DEX) for parturients undergoing cesarean section are still lack of evidence. This aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of intrathecal DEX for parturients undergoing cesarean section to provide more data evidence for intrathecal applications. METHODS: Three hundred parturients undergoing cesarean section under spinal anesthesia were randomly assigned into three groups: group B: 9.0 mg (1.2 ml) of 0.75% bupivacaine with saline (1 ml); group FB: 9.0 mg (1.2 ml) of 0.75% bupivacaine with 20 µg of fentanyl (1 ml); group DB: 9.0 mg (1.2 ml) of 0.75% bupivacaine with 5 µg of DEX (1 ml). Intraoperative block characteristics, parturients' postoperative quality of recovery, maternal and neonatal outcomes and the plasma concentration of DEX were measured. All parturients were followed up for 30 days to determine whether nerve injury occurred. RESULTS: Compared with group B, the duration of sensory block in group FB and group DB were significantly prolonged (108.4 min [95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 104.6-112.3] in group B, and 122.0 min [95% CI = 116.8-127.3] in group FB, 148.2 min [95% CI = 145.3-151.1] in group DB). The overall score of quality recovery in group DB (71.6 [95% CI = 71.0-72.2]) was significantly higher than that in group FB (61.5 [95% CI = 60.8-62.2]) and group B (61.7 [95% CI = 61.0-62.4]). There was no statistically significant difference among the three groups for PH, PaO2, and PaCO2 of newborn. The plasma concentration of DEX in umbilical artery and umbilical vein was low and cannot be detected. The 30-days follow-up of parturients did not show any new onset of back, buttock or leg pain or paresthesia. CONCLUSIONS: DEX is a potential local anesthetic adjuvant that the intrathecal combination of 5 µg DEX can safely exhibit a facilitatory block effect and improve parturients' recovery quality. RESUMO

Hybrids consisting of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) with a dumbbell topology and C2 symmetry were designed and synthesized. They self-assemble into 5 nm ordered structures. In particular, the increased steric effect with increasing POSS units stabilizes a square columnar phase (Colsqu ) which is important in nanotemplating. These hybrids containing discotic liquid crystal HBC and POSS units have an excellent etching contrast and present an approach to obtain 5 nm nanopatterns.

RESUMO

Obtaining nanoscale-ordered structures is important for the development of nanotechnology. We designed and synthesized a series of disk-cube triads containing one hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) and two polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) moieties, HBC-2POSS. The two POSS units were linked via ester or amide bonds. With the amide linkage used, the hydrogen bonding that was introduced affected the balance between the π-π interaction of HBC cores and crystallization interaction of POSS units. Hierarchically ordered structures were obtained from HBC-2POSS triads owing to the synergistic effect of multiple secondary interactions: π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding, and crystallization interaction. As organic-inorganic hybrid materials, these HBC-2POSS triads are promising candidates for templates <10 nm.

RESUMO

The self-assembly of a rod-coil amphiphilic block copolymer (ABCP) led to Im3‾ m and Pn3‾ m polymer cubosomes and p6mm polymer hexasomes. This is the first time that these structures are observed in a rod-coil system. By varying the hydrophobic chain length, the initial concentration of the polymer solution, or the solubility parameter of the mixed solvent, head-tail asymmetry is adjusted to control the formation of polymer cubosomes or hexasomes. The formation mechanism of the polymer cubosomes was also studied. This research opens up a new way for further study of the bicontinuous and inverse phases in different ABCP systems.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical effect of modified Snodgrass surgical technique in the treatment of hypospadias. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data about 212 cases of hypospadias treated by urethroplasty from January 2008 to October 2016, 94 with the modified Snodgrass technique, namely with a silk line in addition to the urethral suture to make easier postoperative removal of the suture (group A), and the other 118 with the conventional Snodgrass technique (group B). The urethral suture was removed at 10 days after surgery for the patients in group A. We compared the success rate of surgery and incidence of postoperative complications between the two groups. RESULTS: Compared with group B, group A showed a significantly higher success rate of surgery (81.36% vs 91.49%, P <0.05) but lower incidence rates of postoperative incisional infection (12.71% vs 4.26%, P <0.05) and urinary fistula (16.10% vs 6.38%, P <0.05). No statistically significant difference was found in the incidence of urethral stenosis between the two groups (2.54% vs 2.13%, P >0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The modified Snodgrass technique can improve the success rate of surgery and reduce the incidence rates of incisional infection and urinary fistula, which deserves wide clinical application.

RESUMO

By making use of the host-guest interactions between the host molecule tris-o-phenylenedioxycyclotriphosphazene (TPP) and the rod-coil block copolymer (BCP) poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(octyl 4'-octyloxy-2-vinylbiphenyl-4-carboxylate) (PEO-b-PVBP), the supramolecular rod-rod block copolymer P(EO@TPP)-b-PVBP was constructed. It consists of a crystalline segment P(EO@TPP) with a hexagonal crystalline structure and a columnar nematic liquid-crystalline segment (PVBP). As the PVBP segments arrange themselves as columnar nematic phases, the crystalline structure of the inclusion complex P(EO@TPP), which has a smaller diameter, is destroyed. The self-assembled nanostructure is thus clearly affected by the interplay between the two blocks. On the basis of wide- and small-angle X-ray scattering analysis, we conclude that the supramolecular rod-rod BCP can self-assemble into a cylinder-in-cylinder double hexagonal structure.

RESUMO

A novel actinomycete, designated strain NEAU-FHS4T, was isolated from the root of black false hellebore (Veratrum nigrum L.). Strain NEAU-FHS4T formed single spores with smooth surfaces on substrate mycelium. The novel strain contained meso-diaminopimelic as amino acid of the peptidoglycan and xylose and glucose as whole-cell sugars. The predominant menaquinones were MK-10(H6) and MK-10(H8). Mycolic acids were not detected. The diagnostic phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C16 : 0, C18 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analysis showed that the novel isolate had characteristics typical of members of the genus Plantactinospora. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis also indicated that strain NEAU-FHS4T belonged to the genus Plantactinospora, with highest sequence similarities to Plantactinospora mayteni YIM 61359T (98.88 %) and Plantactinospora endophytica YIM 68255T (98.85 %). The results of DNA-DNA hybridization and physiological and biochemical tests allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of the novel strain from the most closely related strains. Based on morphological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain NEAU-FHS4T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Plantactinospora, for which the name Plantactinospora veratri sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-FHS4T ( = CGMCC 4.7143T = DSM 46718T).

RESUMO

Background: The protective effects of metformin (Met) against doxorubicin (Dox)-induced cardiotoxicity via potential hypotheses of mechanisms of action with unknown reliability and credibility. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of Met against Dox-induced cardiotoxicity and the underlying mechanisms of action, as well as examine their reliability and credibility. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted within the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, and CNKI databases from inception to 31 December 2023. Animal experiments evaluating the efficacy of Met against Dox-induced cardiotoxicity were included in this study. The primary efficacy outcomes were markers of myocardial injury. Effect size was measured using the standardized mean difference for continuous variables. Data were pooled using a random-effects model in the Stata 18 statistical software package. Results: Twenty-one studies involving 203-208 animals treated with Dox and 271-276 animals treated with Dox and Met were included in this analysis. Quality assessment revealed high-quality scores. Pooled results favored Met treatment based on the serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase-myocardial band (CK-MB), cardiac troponin I (cTnI), and aspartate aminotransferase levels. Sensitivity analysis using the leave-one-out method demonstrated stable results. Funnel plots, Egger's test, and Begg's test confirmed potential publication bias. The oxidative stress hypothesis has been investigated extensively based on abundant evidence. Conclusion: Met is effective and safe for protecting against Dox-induced cardiotoxicity, thus making it an appropriate drug for clinical investigation. The oxidative stress hypothesis of mechanism of action is well established with highest reliability and credibility.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Desmoid tumor (DT) is a rare soft tissue tumor that can occur anywhere in the body. Abdominal wall DT presents unique clinical challenges due to its distinctive manifestations, treatment modalities, and the lack of biomarkers for diagnosis and recurrence prediction, making clinical decisions exceedingly complex. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 32-year-old female who underwent radical resection combined with patch reinforcement for rectus abdominis DT, successfully alleviating abdominal discomfort, with no recurrence during the 6-month follow-up after surgery. DIAGNOSES: Based on the imaging studies and medical history, the patient underwent radical surgical resection. Histopathology reveals that the tumor cells predominantly composed of proliferative fibroblasts with local collagen deposition. The lesional cells show positive staining for ß-catenin, indicating a diagnosis of DT. INTERVENTIONS: The patient underwent radical surgical resection with patch reinforcement to repair the abdominal wall defect. Pathology confirmed negative margins, achieving an R0 resection, and genetic testing identified a T41A mutation in CTNNB1. Consequently, no additional adjuvant therapy was administered postoperatively. OUTCOMES: The patient was discharged with the incision healing well after 3 days postoperation. Upon reexamination 6 months later, no recurrence or adverse complications were observed. LESSONS: Abdominal wall DT treatment requires personalized plans from multidisciplinary team discussions. Genetic testing plays a crucial role in identifying novel biomarkers for abdominal wall DT. We have once again demonstrated the significant clinical significance of CTNNB1 mutations in the diagnosis and progression of abdominal wall DT. Additionally, genes such as CCND1, CYP3A4, SLIT1, RRM1, STIM1, ESR2, UGT1A1, among others, may also be closely associated with the progression of abdominal wall DT. Future research should delve deeper into and systematically evaluate the precise impact of these genetic mutations on treatment selection and prognosis for abdominal wall DT, in order to better guide patient management and treatment decisions.

RESUMO

The incidence of type 2 diabetes is high, and the existing metformin hydrochloride (MH) tablets of 250 mg cannot meet the demands of the Chinese drug market. This study aimed to evaluate the bioequivalence and safety of generic formulations of MH tablets (test formulation [T], 250 mg/tablet) and innovative products (reference formulation [R], 250 mg/tablet) under fasting conditions. This was an open-label, single-dose, 2-period, 2-sequence crossover, single-center, randomized phase I clinical trial. T and R were considered bioequivalent if the adjusted geometric mean ratios (GMRs) and 90% confidence intervals of the area under the curve (AUC) and maximum concentration (Cmax ) were within the range of 0.8-1.25. Thirty-five participants completed the trial. The T/R adjusted GMRs (95.7% for Cmax , 98.7% for AUC0→t , 98.8% for AUC0→∞ ) were within the acceptable bioequivalence range of 80%-125%. No serious adverse events or suspected or unexpected serious adverse reactions occurred during this trial. The study findings confirmed that generic MH is a well-tolerated and bioequivalent alternative to innovative products under fasting conditions in healthy Chinese participants. RESUMO

The type of self-assembled structure has a significant impact on the ionic conductivity of block copolymer or liquid crystalline (LC) ion conductors. In this study, we focus on the effect of self-assembled structures on the ionic conductivity of a non-block copolymer, LC ion conductor, which is a mixture of an azobenzene monomer (NbAzo), pentaerythritol tetre(3-mercapropionate) (PETMP), and a lithium salt, lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (LiTFSI). The self-assembled structures and ionic conductivities of ion conductors having different doping ratios of lithium salt to monomer were examined. With the increase in the doping ratio, the self-assembled structure transforms from lamellae (LAM) to double gyroid (GYR). The effect of self-assembled structure on ionic conductivity was analyzed; it was found that the conductivity of the GYR structure was about 3.6 times that of the LAM one, indicating that obtaining the GYR structure is more effective in improving ionic conductivity.
