RESUMO

AIMS: This study aimed to measure sleep quality and its possible association with fear of progression (FOP) in patients with chronic heart failure (HF). DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: A total of 254 patients with chronic HF were recruited from two tertiary hospitals in China. The sociodemographic and clinical data of participants were collected using a general information questionnaire. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form were used to evaluate sleep quality over 1 month and FOP. Pearson correlation and hierarchical regression were conducted to analyse the relationship between sleep quality and FOP. RESULTS: Of all participants, 85.8% had poor sleep quality, with a mean score of 12.3 ± 4.2 (possible score could be 0 to 21). The severity of FOP was positively correlated with poor sleep quality. HF hospitalization in the past year, numbers of HF drugs, monthly income and total score of FOP were strong predictors of decreased sleep quality, accounting for 24.2% of the variance in the sleep quality of these patients. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with chronic HF generally reported poor sleep quality, which should be highly concerned for medical workers. Alleviating FOP as a therapeutic strategy may improve sleep quality. IMPACT: It is urgent to raise clinical attention that Chinese patients with chronic HF have poor sleep quality, which is not just due to the symptoms of HF itself. FOP is an important psychological factor influencing sleep quality in patients with chronic HF, which has not been explored in China. This study provides a new perspective on targeted interventions for poor sleep quality in chronic HF. PATIENT AND PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT: No patient or public involvement.

The electrical and mechanical properties of graphene-based materials can be tuned by the introduction of nanopores, which are sensitively related to the size, morphology, density, and location of nanopores. The synthesis of low-dimensional graphene nanostructures containing well-defined nonplanar nanopores has been challenging due to the intrinsic steric hindrance. Herein, we report the selective synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) containing periodic nonplanar [14]annulene pores on Ag(111) and two-dimensional (2D) porous graphene nanosheet containing periodic nonplanar [30]annulene pores on Au(111), starting from a same precursor. The formation of distinct products on the two substrates originates from the different thermodynamics and kinetics of coupling reactions. The reaction mechanisms were confirmed by a series of control experiments, and the appropriate thermodynamic and kinetic parameters for optimizing the reaction pathways were proposed. In addition, the combined scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed the electronic structures of porous graphene structures, demonstrating the impact of nonplanar pores on the π-conjugation of molecules.

Our previous study revealed that under monochromatic red light (RL), the melatonin nuclear receptor reduces the proliferation activity of broiler thymic lymphocytes through the P65 signaling pathway. The main objective of this study was to investigate the signal mechanism by which RL decreases thymic lymphocyte proliferation. Initially, broilers were purchased and randomly assigned to be fed under white light (WL), red light (RL), green light (GL), and blue light (BL). Pinealectomy was performed 3 d later, and the broilers were euthanized after 14 d. The results showed that the expression of the antiapoptotic proteins Bcl-2/Bcl-xl decreased under RL, while the expression of the pro-apoptotic factor Bax/caspase-3 and the pro-inflammatory factors INF-γ/TNF-α/IL-6 increased. After pinealectomy, the expression of Bax/TNF-α/IL-6 increased in conjunction with the decrease in Bcl-2 expression. In vitro experiments demonstrated that exogenous melatonin decreased the expression of Bax/TNF-α/IL-6 in thymic lymphocytes of chicks reared under RL. This melatonin-induced effect was enhanced by SR1078 (RORα/RORγ agonist) but attenuated by SR3335 (RORα antagonist) and BAY (P65 antagonist). These findings revealed that the melatonin nuclear receptor RORα/RORγ promotes the expression of the pro-apoptotic factor Bax/caspase-3 and the pro-inflammatory factors INF-γ/TNF-α/IL-6, while inhibiting the expression of the antiapoptotic factor Bcl-2/Bcl-xl. Our research suggested the signaling pathway of monochromatic red light impacts the apoptosis of thymus lymphocytes in broiler.

Fermentation stage is a crucial factor for flavor profiles formation of hawthon wine. Thus, comprehensive knowledge of dynamic relationship between nonvolatile (NVOCs) and volatile aroma compounds (VOCs) from hawthorn wine at different fermentation stages was investigated by GC-MS and HPLC coupled with multivariate analysis. The increase of alcohols/esters/acids but decrease of terpenes/aldehydes/ketones was observed as fermentation extension. Specifically, OAV of ethyl acetate, ethyl caprylate, and ethyl caprate was > 50 from the 3rd day to 10th day, giving more fruity properties. Multivariate analysis showed that 1-hexanol, ethyl myristate, isobutyric acid, et al., were linked to the sensory evaluation of "sweet", "floral" and "fruity", and fructose, glucose and bitter amino acids were responsible for reduction of "bitterness" and "astringency". Additionally, VOCs were positively correlated with organic acids while negative to amino acids/soluble sugars, probably due to metabolization as precursors, providing references for aroma enhancement by regulating NVOCs precursors.

Physicochemical properties and morphological features of pectin in high-pressure-processing (JHPP) and thermal-processing (JTP) treated cloudy hawthorn juice were investigated based on acid heating extraction. Pectin from hawthorn juice was identified as low methoxy pectin (41.77%), which was significantly reduced to 34.56%-39.51% from JHPP, while pectin esterification degree (DE) from JTP increased to 45.58%, which can also be confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In comparison to control, pectin linearity of JHPP and JTP significantly decreased with more highly branched-chains. However, no significate difference was observed in thermostability, crystallinity and main functional groups. Interestingly, a large number of aggregations was observed in JHPP pectin, and the intermodular distance of JTP pectin was enhanced, which was consistent with the results of viscosity, molecular weight and DE. These findings provided insights into utilization of hawthorn pectin and application of high-pressure processing (HPP) for improving quality property of fruit products by pectin modification.

AIMS: Studies have shown that symptom perception is associated with fear of progression (FOP) in many diseases and regulated by psychological factors. Whether the association also occurs in patients with chronic heart failure (HF) remains unclear, as do the specific mechanisms involved. This study aimed to explore the multiple mediation effects of self-care confidence and mental resilience on the relationship between symptom perception and FOP in Chinese patients with chronic HF. METHODS AND RESULTS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 247 patients with chronic HF recruited from two hospitals in Yangzhou, China. The sociodemographic and clinical data and self-reported questionnaires including heart failure somatic perception, fear of progression, self-care confidence, and mental resilience were collected. Data analysis relating to correlations and mediating effects was carried out by SPSS 26.0 and PROCESS v3.3 macro. Fear of progression was positively correlated with symptom perception (r = 0.599, P < 0.01), but negatively correlated with self-care confidence (r = -0.663, P < 0.01), mental resilience-strength (r = -0.521, P < 0.01), and mental resilience-toughness (r = -0.596, P < 0.01). The relationship between symptom perception and FOP was mediated by self-care confidence [effect = 0.095, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.054-0.142)] and mental resilience-toughness [effect = 0.033, 95% CI (0.006-0.074)], respectively, and together in serial [effect = 0.028, 95% CI (0.011-0.050)]. The proportion of the mediating effect accounting for the total effect was 31.0%. CONCLUSION: Self-care confidence and mental resilience-toughness were multiple mediators of the association between symptom perception and FOP in patients with chronic HF. Interventions targeted at strengthening self-care confidence and mental resilience may be beneficial for the reduction of FOP, especially with regard to toughness.

BACKGROUND: Our recent study has demonstrated that kinesiophobia is common in Chinese inpatients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Symptoms of heart failure (HF), coping mode, self-efficacy for exercise (SEE), and social support have been reported to be associated with kinesiophobia. However, little is known about the relationships between these four variables and kinesiophobia in older patients with CHF. OBJECTIVE: To test a model of influencing factors of kinesiophobia in older CHF patients. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was conducted from January 2021 to October 2021. The general information questionnaire, the Chinese version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia Heart (TSK-SV Heart-C), Symptom Status Questionnaire-Heart Failure, SEE, the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire, and Social Support Rating Scale were used. Spearman correlation analysis and structural equation model (SEM) were performed for data analysis. RESULTS: A total of 270 older patients with CHF were recruited. Symptom status of HF (r = 0.455, p < .01), avoidance coping mode (r = 0.393, p <.01), and yielding coping mode (r = 0.439, p < .01) were positively correlated with kinesiophobia, while SEE (r = -0.530, p < .01), facing coping mode (r = -0.479, p < .01), and social support (r = -0.464, p < .01) were negatively correlated with kinesiophobia. SEM analysis showed that social support could affect kinesiophobia through the mediating variables of symptom status of HF, avoidance coping mode, and exercise self-efficacy. CONCLUSIONS: Symptoms of HF, coping mode, SEE, and social support may play role in kinesiophobia in older CHF patients. We should pay more attention to the synergies among these four variables in the improvement of kinesiophobia.

The adulteration of soymilk (SM) into raw bovine milk (RM) to gain profit without declaration could cause a health risk. In this study, electronic nose (E-nose) and headspace-gas chromatography ion-mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) were applied to establish a rapid and effective method to identify adulteration in RM with SM. The obtained data from HS-GC-IMS and E-nose can distinguish the adulterated samples with SM by principal component analysis. Furthermore, a quantitative model of partial least squares was established. The detection limits of E-nose and HS-GC-IMS quantitative models were 1.53% and 1.43%, the root mean square errors of prediction were 0.7390 and 0.5621, the determination coefficients of prediction were 0.9940 and 0.9958, and the relative percentage difference were 10.02 and 13.27, respectively, indicating quantitative regression and good prediction performances of SM adulteration levels in RM were achieved. This research can provide scientific information on the rapid, non-destructive and effective adulteration detection for RM.

The Kagome lattice structures based on metal-organic coordination have garnered widespread interest because of their topologically Dirac/flat bands and other exotic electronic structures. However, the experimental fabrication of large-area two-dimensional (2D) Kagome lattice structures of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) via on-surface synthesis remains limited. Herein, we successfully construct two kinds of large-scale 2D Kagome-type lattices stabilized by 4-fold N-Ag coordination on the Ag(111) surface. With the aid of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SRPES), we clearly elucidate the reaction pathway and mechanism of fabrication of the two Kagome lattices. This work provides a novel platform for investigating related intriguing physical properties.

Kinesiophobia is related with adverse outcomes in various diseases, but it has not been studied in chronic heart failure (CHF). Fatigue often causes movement avoidance in CHF patients, and thereby, leads to a worsening of condition and increasing severity of symptom burden. The purpose of this study was to explore kinesiophobia and its related factors and the relationship between the kinesiophobia and fatigue in CHF patients. We recruited (n = 236) inpatients with CHF from October 2020 to March 2021 and administered a self-designed demographic questionnaire, the Chinese version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia Heart (TSK-Heart-C), and the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20), and collected related electronic medical record data. Findings revealed that 63% of participants had kinesiophobia. was a moderate correlation between fatigue and kinesiophobia (r = .49, p < .01). Educational background, monthly family income, disease course, and fatigue explained 41% of the variance in kinesiophobia, of which fatigue independently accounted for 9%.

Kagome nanoporous graphenes (NPGs) are fascinating due to their exotic electronic and magnetic properties. The emerging on-surface synthesis (mostly on metal surfaces) provides a new opportunity to fabricate Kagome NPGs with atomic resolution. Previously the Kagome NPGs synthesized on surfaces were largely heteroatom-doped and suffer from morphological defects (evidently on metal surfaces). The on-surface synthesis of pristine Kagome NPG with improved structural quality is extremely desirable. In this paper, using a halogenated precursor, we report a bottom-up fabrication of pristine NPG with Kagome topology on Ag(111) via classic Ullmann coupling. The templating effect of organometallic (OM) intermediates for subsequent covalent coupling is determined by comparing the OM phase and resultant covalent product. The reaction parameters are found to have a significant impact on the topology and quality of OM intermediates. Specifically, a higher surface temperature and lower evaporation rate favor the growth of better-quality and higher-yield OM Kagome NPGs. The covalent Kagome NPGs obtained by further annealing of these OM networks are affected likewise due to the template effect of OM intermediates. Our work further confirms the generality of the OM template effect. It also offers a novel method to achieve the selective synthesis of Kagome lattice networks.

Our studies found that melatonin mediates the monochromatic light-induced lymphocyte proliferation in chickens. However, melatonin receptor subtypes contain membrane receptor (Mel1a/Mel1b/Mel1c) and nuclear receptor (Retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor [ROR] α/RORß/RORγ) and are characteristic with cell specificity. This study compared receptor pathway of melatonin, which mediated the monochromatic light-induced T/B lymphocyte proliferations in chickens. Newly hatched chicks were randomly divided into white light, red light, green light (GL), and blue light groups. Green light promoted the membrane receptor expression in the spleen but decreased the nuclear receptor level compared with that of red light. These changes were accompanied by increase of T/B lymphocyte proliferation and plasma melatonin level under GL. Pinealectomy reversed aforementioned changes and resulted in no differences among the light-treated groups. Supplementation of exogenous melatonin enhanced GL-induced T/B lymphocyte proliferation in the spleen but was reversed by Mel1c antagonist prazosin and RORα agonist SR1078 and enhanced by RORα antagonist SR3335. However, Mel1b antagonist 4P-PDOT and RORγ antagonist GSK increased the stimulation effect of melatonin on GL-induced T lymphocyte proliferation but no effect on the B-lymphocyte proliferation. These results indicate that melatonin promotes the GL-induced T lymphocyte proliferation through Mel1b, Mel1c, and RORα/RORγ; however, the Mel1a, Mel1c, and RORα may be involved in the B lymphocyte proliferation.

Present study clarified role of melatonin nuclear receptor RORα in monochromatic light-induced T-lymphocyte proliferation in chicks. Green light elevated plasma melatonin level and organ index, T-lymphocyte proliferation and IL-2 production in thymus, but decreased RORα, p-P65 and p-IκB expressions relative to red light. By contrast, pinealectomy decreased the melatonin content and reversed the stimulatory effect of green light, and resulted in that these thymus parameters were not significantly different among the light-treated groups. Exogenous melatonin supplementation enhanced T-lymphocyte proliferation and IL-2 production in cultured thymocytes. This stimulatory effect of melatonin was reversed by RORα agonist but was enhanced by RORα antagonist. In contrast to RORα antagonist, RORα agonist decreased cytoplasmic P65 level and increased nuclear P65 level. Supplementation with P65 antagonist increased T-lymphocyte proliferation. We conclude that RORα could negatively regulate green light-enhanced T-lymphocyte proliferation in chick thymus by upregulating IκB phosphorylation, which promotes P65 nuclear translocation and NF-κB activation.

Sulfuretin is a major flavonoid found in Rhus verniciflua and carries anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties, but its potential use in the control of skin pigmentation is unknown. The purpose of the present study was to elucidate sulfuretin as a new active compound inhibiting melanogenesis and the underlying mechanism. The effects of sulfuretin on melanin production, tyrosinase activity, cAMP level, and MITF expression were examined in murine melanoma B16 cells challenged with forskolin or α-MSH. The inhibitory effect of sulfuretin on melanogenesis was further validated on neonatal human melanocytes. When tested in melanoma B16 cells treated with forskolin or α-MSH, sulfuretin inhibited the cellular melanogenesis. Sulfuretin also showed direct inhibitory effect on tyrosinase activity in vitro. In human primary melanocytes, the inhibitory effect of sulfuretin on melanin synthesis was also confirmed. Our current results support the depigmenting effect of sulfuretin and suggest a clinical strategy for using sulfuretin in the topical treatment of hyperpigmentation disorders.
