Soil microorganisms play a major role in shaping plant diversity, not only through their direct effects as pathogens, mutualists, and decomposers, but also by altering the outcome of plant interactions. In particular, previous research has shown that the soil community often generates frequency-dependent feedback loops among plants that can either stabilize or destabilize species interactions and thereby promote or hinder species coexistence. However, recent insights from modern coexistence theory have shown that microbial effects on plant coexistence depend not only on these stabilizing or destabilizing effects, but also on the degree to which they generate competitive fitness differences. While many previous experiments have generated the data necessary for evaluating microbially mediated fitness differences, these effects have rarely been quantified in the literature. Here, we present a meta-analysis of data from 50 studies, which we used to quantify the microbially mediated (de)stabilization and fitness differences derived from a classic plant-soil feedback model. We found that across 518 plant species pairs, soil microbes generated both stabilization (or destabilization) and fitness differences, but also that the microbially mediated fitness differences dominated. As a consequence, if plants are otherwise equivalent competitors, the balance of soil microbe­generated (de)stabilization and fitness differences drives species exclusion much more frequently than coexistence or priority effects. Our work shows that microbially mediated fitness differences are an important but overlooked effect of soil microbes on plant coexistence. This finding paves the way for a more complete understanding of the processes that maintain plant biodiversity.

Pairwise interactions between species can be modified by other community members, leading to emergent dynamics contingent on community composition. Despite the prevalence of such higher-order interactions, little is known about how they are linked to the timing and order of species' arrival. We generate population dynamics from a mechanistic plant-soil feedback model, then apply a general theoretical framework to show that the modification of a pairwise interaction by a third plant depends on its germination phenology. These time-dependent interaction modifications emerge from concurrent changes in plant and microbe populations and are strengthened by higher overlap between plants' associated microbiomes. The interaction between this overlap and the specificity of microbiomes further determines plant coexistence. Our framework is widely applicable to mechanisms in other systems from which similar time-dependent interaction modifications can emerge, highlighting the need to integrate temporal shifts of species interactions to predict the emergent dynamics of natural communities.

BACKGROUND: Weight management is an effective prevention and treatment strategy for diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of diabetic patients towards weight management. METHODS: Diabetic patients treated at Qidong City, Jiangsu Province, between January 2023 and June 2023 were included in this cross-sectional study. A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect their demographic characteristics and KAP toward weight management. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to examine the inter-relationships among KAP scores. RESULTS: Among a total of 503 valid questionnaires that were collected, 55.07% were filled out by men and 54.67% by those aged < 60 years. The mean scores for knowledge, attitude, and practice were 8.03 ± 3.525 (possible range: 0-13), 31.88 ± 3.524 (possible range: 10-50), and 22.24 ± 3.318 (possible range: 9-45), respectively. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed the knowledge was positively associated with attitude (r = 0.295, P < 0.001) and practice (r = 0.131, P < 0.001), and attitude was positively associated with practice (r = 0.140, P = 0.002). SEM demonstrated positive associations between knowledge and attitude (ß = 0.28, P < 0.001), and attitude and practice (ß = 0.09, P = 0.019). Moreover, older age was negatively associated with knowledge (ß=-0.04, P = 0.001), while higher education (ß = 1.220, P < 0.001), increased monthly income (ß = 0.779, P < 0.001), diagnosis of fatty liver (ß = 1.03, P = 0.002), and screening for excess visceral fat (ß = 1.11, P = 0.002) were positively associated with knowledge. CONCLUSION: Diabetic patients showed moderate knowledge, neutral attitudes, and inappropriate practices toward weight management. Knowledge was positively associated with attitude and practice. These findings provided valuable directions for healthcare interventions targeting improved KAP status of weight management among diabetic patients.

Although various studies have been performed on the function of polymorphonuclear myeloid-derived suppressor cells (PMN-MDSCs) in RA, the results were conflicting. Here we were trying to clarify the role of PMN-MDSCs in the pathogenesis of RA and its specific mechanisms. We detected the frequencies and counts of PMN-MDSCs, TNF-α+ B cells and Ki67+ B cells in spleen and inflamed joints of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mice using flow cytometry. The pathological role of PMN-MDSCs was examined by anti-Ly6G neutralizing antibodies against PMN-MDSCs or adoptive transfer of PMN-MDSCs. And the modulation of PMN-MDSCs on B cells was conducted by coculture assays, RNA-Seq, RT-qPCR, and so on. The mechanism of BAFF regulating B cells was verified through western blot and flow cytometry. PMN-MDSCs accumulated in the spleen and joints of CIA mice. PMN-MDSCs depletion could alleviate the arthritis severity, which was accompanied by decreased TNF-α secretion and proliferation of B cells. And its adoptive transfer also facilitated disease progress. Furthermore, PMN-MDSCs from CIA mice had higher expression level of BAFF, which regulated TNF-α expression, proliferation and apoptosis of B cells in vitro. What's more, BAFF promoted phosphorylation of BTK/NF-κB signalling pathway. And Ibrutinib (BTK inhibitor) could reverse the effect of BAFF on TNF-α expression of B cells. Our study suggested that PMN-MDSCs enhanced disease severity of CIA and manipulated TNF-α expression, proliferation and apoptosis of B cells via BAFF, furthermore, BAFF promoted TNF-α expression through BTK/NF-κB signalling pathway, which demonstrated a novel pathogenesis of PMN-MDSCs in CIA.

BACKGROUND: Sirtuin 3 (Sirt3) is a controversial regulator of carcinogenesis. It residents in the mitochondria and gradually decays during aging. In this study, we tried to investigate the role of Sirt3 in carcinogenesis and to explore its involvement in metabolic alteration. METHODS: We generated conditional intestinal epithelium Sirt3-knockout mice by crossing ApcMin/+; Villin-Cre with Sirt3fl/fl (AVS) mice. The deacetylation site of Lon protease-1 (LONP1) was identified with Mass spectrometry. The metabolic flux phenotype was determined by Seahorse bioanalyzer. RESULTS: We found that intestinal epithelial cell-specific ablation of Sirt3 promotes primary tumor growth via stabilizing mitochondrial LONP1. Notably, we newly identified that Sirt3 deacetylates human oncogene LONP1 at N terminal residue lysine 145 (K145). The LONP1 hyperacetylation-mutant K145Q enhances oxidative phosphorylation to accelerate tumor growth, whereas the deacetylation-mutant K145R produces calorie-restriction like phenotype to restrain tumorigenesis. Sirt3 deacetylates LONP1 at K145 and subsequently facilitates the ESCRT0 complex sorting and K63-ubiquitination that resulted in the degradation of LONP1. Our results sustain the notion that Sirt3 is a tumor-suppressor to maintain the appropriate ubiquitination and degradation of oncogene LONP1. CONCLUSION: Sirt3 represents a targetable metabolic checkpoint of oncogenesis, which produces energy restriction effects via maintaining LONP1 K145 deacetylation and subsequent K63 ubiquitination.

BACKGROUND: Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is a global public health concern affecting women's health and quality of life, leading to productivity loss and increased medical expenses. As a non-pharmacological intervention, auricular acupoint therapy (AAT) has been increasingly applied to treat PD, but the overall effectiveness remains unclear. AIMS: The aim of this review was to synthesize the effects of AAT targeting menstrual pain among females with PD. METHODS: Eight databases (PubMed, EMBASE, AMED, CINAHL Plus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang Data) and three registries (ClinicalTrials.gov, ISRCTN Registry and the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry) were searched to identify existing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from inception to 21 August 2022. Two reviewers independently screened, extracted the data, and appraised the methodological quality and the evidence strength using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2) and the GRADE approach. RESULTS: A total of 793 participants from 11 RCTs were included. Despite substantial heterogeneity, AAT was more effective in reducing menstrual pain and related symptoms than placebo and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs). No significant subgroup differences were found between study locations as well as invasiveness, duration, type, acupoints number, ear selection and provider of AAT. Only minor adverse effects of AAT were reported. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: AAT can help women with PD, particularly those who are refrained from pharmaceuticals. Primary healthcare professionals, including nurses, can be well-equipped to provide evidence-based and effective AAT for people with PD. AAT can be used in a broader global clinical community. To provide an optimal effect and have wider usability, a unified practice standard is required, which would necessitate further adaptation of clinical care of people with PD. AAT effectively decreased menstrual pain and other accompanying symptoms of PD. More research is needed to identify effective AAT features and explore optimal therapy regimes for PD.

During an investigation of freshwater fungi in Jiangxi province, China, a new hyphomycetous fungus, Aquapteridospora jiangxiensis, was collected and isolated. Aquapteridospora jiangxiensis is characterized by its unbranched and guttulate conidiophores with multi-septa swollen at the base, polyblastic conidiogenous cells with sympodial proliferations, and denticles, and guttulate conidia with a sheath. A photo plate of the macro- and micro-morphology and a muti-loci (ITS, LSU, SSU, TEF1 and RPB2) phylogenetic tree are provided. A key to the species of Aquapteridospora is also presented in this paper.

BACKGROUND: The association between serum total indoxyl sulfate (tIS), and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality is a matter of debate. In the current study we sought to determine the association, if any, between serum tIS, and all-cause and CVD-associated mortality in patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted involving 500 MHD patients at Dalian Municipal Central Hospital from 31 December 2014 to 31 December 2020. Serum tIS levels were measured at baseline and classified as high (≥44.16 ng/ml) or low (< 44.16 ng/ml) according to the "X-tile" program. Besides, the associations between continuous serum tIS and outcomes were also explored. Predictors were tested for colinearity using variance inflation factor analysis. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using Cox proportional hazards regression models. Restricted cubic spline model was performed to assess dose-response relationships between tIS concentration and all-cause and CVD mortality. RESULTS: During a 58-month median follow-up period, 224 deaths (132 CVD deaths) were documented. After adjustment for potential confounders, the serum tIS level was positively associated with all-cause mortality (HR = 1.02, 95% = 1.01-1.03); however, we did not detect a significant association when tIS was a dichotomous variable. Compared with the MHD population with a serum tIS level < 44.16 ng/ml, the adjusted HR for CVD mortality among those with a serum tIS level ≥ 44.16 ng/ml was 1.76 (95% = 1.10-2.82). Furthermore, we also noted the same association when the serum tIS level was a continuous variable. CONCLUSION: The serum tIS level was associated with higher risk of all-cause and CVD mortality among MHD patients. Further prospective large-scale studies are required to confirm this finding.

Newborn hearing screening is not designed to detect delayed-onset prelingual hearing loss or aminoglycoside-antibiotic-induced ototoxicity. Cases with severe to profound hearing loss have been reported to have been missed by newborn hearing screens. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of concurrent hearing and genetic screening in the general population and demonstrate its benefits in practice. Enrolled newborns received concurrent hearing and genetic screens between September 1, 2015 and January 31, 2018. Of the 239,636 eligible infants (median age, 19 months), 548 (0.23%) had prelingual hearing loss. Genetic screening identified 14 hearing loss patients with positive genotypes and 27 patients with inconclusive genotypes who had passed the hearing screens. In addition, the genetic screen identified 0.23% (570/239,636) of the newborns and their family members as at-risk for ototoxicity, which is undetectable by hearing screens. In conclusion, genetic screening complements newborn hearing screening by improving the detection of infants at risk of hereditary hearing loss and ototoxicity, and by informing genotype-based clinical management for affected infants and their family members. Our findings suggest that the practice should be further validated in other populations and rigorous cost-effectiveness analyses are warranted.

Interactions between plants and soil microbes can strongly influence plant diversity and community dynamics. Soil microbes may promote plant diversity by driving negative frequency-dependent plant population dynamics, or may favor species exclusion by providing one species an average fitness advantage over others. However, past empirical research has focused overwhelmingly on the consequences of frequency-dependent feedbacks for plant species coexistence and has generally neglected the consequences of microbially mediated average fitness differences. Here we use theory to develop metrics that quantify microbially mediated plant fitness differences, and show that accounting for these effects can profoundly change our understanding of how microbes influence plant diversity. We show that soil microbes can generate fitness differences that favour plant species exclusion when they disproportionately harm (or favour) one plant species over another, but these fitness differences may also favor coexistence if they trade off with competition for other resources or generate intransitive dominance hierarchies among plants. We also show how the metrics we present can quantify microbially mediated fitness differences in empirical studies, and explore how microbial control over coexistence varies along productivity gradients. In all, our analysis provides a more complete theoretical foundation for understanding how plant-microbe interactions influence plant diversity.

Regressing the accelerated degradation of skeletal muscle protein is a significant goal for cancer cachexia management. Here, we show that genetic deletion of Pgam5 ameliorates skeletal muscle atrophy in various tumor-bearing mice. pgam5 ablation represses excessive myoblast mitophagy and effectively suppresses mitochondria meltdown and muscle wastage. Next, we define BNIP3 as a mitophagy receptor constitutively associating with PGAM5. bnip3 deletion restricts body weight loss and enhances the gastrocnemius mass index in the age- and tumor size-matched experiments. The NH2-terminal region of PGAM5 binds to the PEST motif-containing region of BNIP3 to dampen the ubiquitination and degradation of BNIP3 to maintain continuous mitophagy. Finally, we identify S100A9 as a pro-cachectic chemokine via activating AGER/RAGE. AGER deficiency or S100A9 inhibition restrains skeletal muscle loss by weakening the interaction between PGAM5 and BNIP3. In conclusion, the AGER-PGAM5-BNIP3 axis is a novel but common pathway in cancer-associated muscle wasting that can be targetable. Cancer immunotherapy is an attractive strategy because it stimulates immune cells to target malignant cells by regulating the intrinsic activity of the immune system. However, due to lacking many immunologic markers, it remains difficult to treat glioma, a representative "cold" tumor. Herein, to wake the "hot" tumor immunity of glioma, Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) is customized with a coating to create an immunogenic tumor microenvironment and further prove the effect in combination with the immune checkpoint agent anti-PD-1, exhibiting elevated therapeutic efficacy. This is accomplished not by enhancing the delivery of PD-1 blockade to enhance the effect of immunotherapy, but by introducing bacterial photothermal therapy to promote greater involvement of M1 cells in the immune response. After reaching glioma, the bacteria further target glioma cells and M2 phenotype macrophages selectively, enabling precise photothermal conversion for lysing tumor cells and M2 phenotype macrophages, which thereby enhances the positive feedback loop of cancer cells-M1 macrophages-T cells. Collectively, the bacteria synergized with PD-1 blockade strategy may be the key to overcoming the immunosuppressive glioma microenvironment and improving the outcome of immunotherapy toward glioma.

Melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) functions as a crucial neuroendocrine G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) in the central nervous system of mammals, displaying agonist-independent constitutive activity that is mainly determined by its N-terminal domain. We previously reported that zebrafish MC4R exhibited a much higher basal cAMP level in comparison to mammalian MC4Rs. However, the functional evolution of constitutive activities in chordate MC4Rs remains to be elucidated. Here we cloned and compared the constitutive activities of MC4Rs from nine vertebrate species and showed that the additive action of the N-terminus with the extracellular region or transmembrane domain exhibited a combined pharmacological effect on the MC4R constitutive activity. In addition, we demonstrated that four residues of F149, Q156, V163, and K164 of the second intracellular loop played a vital role in determining MC4R constitutive activity. This study provided novel insights into functional evolution and identified a key motif essential for constitutive modulation of MC4R signaling.

Coexistence of radical and nonradical reaction pathways during advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) makes it challenging to obtain flexible regulation of high efficiency and selectivity for the requirement of diverse degradation. Herein, a series of Fe3O4/MoOxSy samples coupling peroxymonosulfate (PMS) systems enabled the switching of radical and nonradical pathways through the inclusion of defects and adjustment of Mo4+/Mo6+ ratios. The silicon cladding operation introduced defects by disrupting the original lattice of Fe3O4 and MoOxS. Meanwhile, the abundance of defective electrons increased the amount of Mo4+ on the catalyst surface, promoting PMS decomposition with a maximum k value up to 1.530 min-1 and a maximum free radical contribution of 81.33%. The Mo4+/Mo6+ ratio in the catalyst was similarly altered by different Fe contents, and Mo6+ contributed to the production of 1O2, allowing the whole system to attain a nonradical species-dominated (68.26%) pathway. The radical species-dominated system has a high chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate for actual wastewater treatment. Conversely, the nonradical species-dominated system can considerably improve the biodegradability of wastewater (biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)/COD = 0.997). The tunable hybrid reaction pathways will expand the targeted applications of AOPs.

Objective: This study sought to examine the impacts of a high dietary fiber cereal meal in comparison to conventional dietary management for diabetes on body weight, distribution of adipose tissue, and cardiovascular risk among individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Methods: A cohort of 120 patients diagnosed with T2DM was enlisted as the study population and divided into two groups using a ratio of 2:1-namely, the W group (n=80) and the U group (n=40). The U group (control) received usual diet, while the W group (intervention) incorporated a high dietary fiber cereal meal in place of their regular staple food in addition to adhering to conventional diabetes dietary recommendations. The high dietary fiber cereal meal was based on whole grains, traditional Chinese medicinal foods, and prebiotics. A subsequent follow-up period of 3 months ensued, during which diverse parameters such as body mass index (BMI),waist-hip ratio (WHR), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c),fasting blood glucose(FBG),C-peptide levels, blood pressure, blood lipids, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP),10-year cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, and Lifetime CVD risk were assessed before and after the intervention. Results: Among the participants, a total of 107 successfully completed the intervention and follow-up, including 72 individuals from the W group and 35 from the U group. Following the intervention, both cohorts exhibited decrease in BMI, WHR, HbA1c, FBG, blood pressure, and blood lipid levels in contrast to their initial measurements. Remarkably, the improvements in BMI, WHR, HbA1c, FBG, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides(TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), the ratio of triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C), and the ratio of 2-hour C-peptide (2hCP) to fasting C-peptide (FCP) were more marked within the W group, exhibiting statistically significant disparities (P<0.05) in comparison to the U group. Furthermore, the levels of hsCRP declined among individuals in the W group, while the U group experienced an elevation.10-year CVD risk reduction were similar in the two groups. While, Lifetime CVD risk only decreased significantly in the W group. Conclusion: The intervention centred on a cereal-based dietary approach showcased favourable outcomes with regard to body weight, adipose distribution, and cardiovascular risk in overweight individuals grappling with T2DM.

OBJECTIVES: To analyse the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) distraction intervention for the management of dental anxiety in paediatric patients. DATA: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of VR distraction interventions for reducing anxiety in paediatric patients, published in English were included. SOURCES: Seven databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, MEDLINE via ProQuest, EMBASE, CINAHL and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, covering the period between January 2000 and September 2022 were searched. STUDY SELECTION: A total of 12 RCTs involving 818 participants were included. Quality appraisal was undertaken using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomised trials by two authors independently. Random-effects model was used to summarise the effects of the interventions and pool data. CONCLUSIONS: Results showed that VR distraction interventions were effective in reducing the dental anxiety of paediatric patients. In meta-analysis, the VR distraction interventions had a significant effect on reducing paediatric patients' anxiety (SMD = -1.74, 95%CI = -2.46, -1.02, p < 0.001, I² = 95%), pain (SMD = -1.57, 95%CI = -2.22, -0.91, p < 0.001, I² = 91%) and heart rate (MD = -10.54, 95%CI = -20.26, -0.81, p = 0.03, I² = 99%) during dental treatment. However, the evidence of VR in managing dental anxiety would become weak because of the publication bias. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: VR distraction interventions could be an effective approach to alleviate the dental anxiety of paediatric patients. Additional well-designed and high-quality RCTs with larger sample sizes are needed to determine the optimal way to deliver VR interventions in paediatric dental clinics.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative anxiety is prevalent amongst adults with elective surgery and is associated with multiple detrimental perioperative physiological effects. Increasing studies support the effectiveness of acupressure in managing preoperative anxiety. However, the magnitude of acupressure's positive association with preoperative anxiety is still unclear due to a lack of rigorous evidence synthesis. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the efficacy of acupressure on preoperative anxiety and physiological parameters amongst adults scheduled for elective surgery. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES: Search terms were combined for acupressure and preoperative anxiety in PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, CINAHL, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and WanFang Data Knowledge Service Platform to search for eligible randomised controlled trials from the inception of each database through September 2022. METHODS: Pairs of researchers independently screened and extracted data from included studies. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool Version 2.0. Meanwhile, random-effects meta-analysis of overall effects and prespecified subgroup (i.e., surgery types, intervention providers, and acupressure stimulation tools) was conducted using Review Manager Software 5.4.1. Meta-regression was performed to explore study-level variables that may contribute to heterogeneity using STATA 16. RESULTS: Of 24 eligible randomised controlled trials, there were a total of 2537 participants from 5 countries contributed to this synthesis. When comparing acupressure with usual care or placebo, acupressure showed a large effect size for preoperative anxiety (SMD = -1.30; 95%CI = -1.54 to -1.06; p < 0.001; I2 = 86%). The significant mean reduction of heart rate, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure was -4.58 BPM (95%CI = -6.70 to -2.46; I2 = 89%), -6.05 mmHg (95%CI = -8.73 to -3.37; p < 0.001; I2 = 88%), and -3.18 mmHg (95%CI = -5.09 to -1.27; p = 0.001; I2 = 78%), respectively. Exploratory subgroup analyses showed significant differences in surgery types and acupressure stimulation tools, whilst the intervention providers (i.e., healthcare professionals and self-administered) showed no statistically significant difference for acupressure therapy. None of the predefined participants and study-level characteristics moderated preoperative anxiety through meta-regression. CONCLUSION: Acupressure appears efficacious as a therapy for improving preoperative anxiety and physiological parameters amongst adults with elective surgery. Self-administered acupressure, which is effective with a large effect, may be considered as an evidence-based approach to managing preoperative anxiety. Hence, this review aids in the development of acupressure in different types of elective surgeries and the improvement of the rigour of acupressure therapy.

Aberrant neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are involved in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the specific pathway leading to NET formation in RA is poorly understood. Therefore, therapies targeting NETs are not available in RA. In this study, we demonstrated Src homology 2 domain-containing inositol phosphatase-1 (SHIP1) function as a hub to regulate NETosis through SHIP1/ p38 MAPK/TNF-α pathway both in vitro and ex vivo and inhibiting SHIP1 expression ameliorated RA symptoms in vivo. Neutrophils from RA patients showed enhanced NETosis as well as increased SHIP1, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) family expression and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) expression. Inhibiting SHIP1 in neutrophils using small molecules counteracted the above-mentioned dysregulations and resulted in decrease in NETosis, p38 expression and TNF-α concentration. Consistent with this, SHIP1 agonist led to upregulated p38MAPK and NET formation. Moreover, inhibiting SHIP1 in vivo led to decreased NETosis and showed beneficial therapeutic effects in Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mice. Taken together, these results indicated that activation of SHIP1/MAPK/TNF-α pathway was necessary for upregulated NETosis in RA, which provided evidence for targeting SHIP1 in RA treatment.

Background: Freshwater fungi refer to the fungi that depend on the freshwater habitats for the whole life cycle or part of their life cycle. In this context, a new aquatic hyphomycete was isolated from decaying wood in a freshwater habitat in Jiangxi Province, China. New information: Dictyochaetajiangxiensis sp. nov., a new aquatic hyphomycete, is characterised by its unbranched, septate, base-fertile conidiophores with multisepta and single phialide at the apex, brown, sterile seta, monophialidic, subcylindrical conidiogenous cells narrowing below the funnel-shaped collarette, hyaline, unicellular, thin-walled, smooth, guttulate, falcate to subclavate conidia narrowly rounded at both ends with hair-like appendages. Phylogenetically, the new species Dictyochaetajiangxiensis clustered together with Dictyochaetabrevis MFLU 19-0216 in a well-supported clade, but formed a separate branch. In order to better define the taxonomic status of the new species, a phylogenetic tree of most closely-related taxa in Chaetosphaeriaceae was established, based on multi-locus sequences (ITS and LSU). The novel species is described and illustrated. Newly-generated molecular data of Dictyochaetajiangxiensis is also provided.

BACKGROUND: Subgroups of individuals sharing similar patterns of postpartum depression (PPD) among Chinese women are unknown thus far. Using a group-based trajectory model, this study aimed to explore the subgroups of Chinese primiparous women that share similar patterns of PPD and to explore the predictors of PPD trajectory membership over the course of the first six months postpartum. METHODS: In total, 674 first-time Chinese mothers were recruited, and their depression status was assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at four time points. FINDINGS: Around 18.0% of participants belonging to Group 1 labeled as "few or no symptoms" remained stable, with an EPDS score of less than 5 during a six-month postpartum period. Almost one-third of subjects fell within the second trajectory, labeled "subclinical but present symptoms", and peaked into the range of mild PPD but mostly stayed in the minimal range and had few or no PPD symptoms. Group 3 included 31.2% of women labeled "minor PPD status", and their mean EPDS scores increased to a peak of 14.66 at six weeks postpartum. Group 4, with "major PPD status", comprised 19.2% of the population, and the mean EPDS scores dramatically increased, reaching a peak of 19.59 at 12 weeks postpartum. Fewer types of support and not attending parenting training were associated with membership in the minor and major PPD status trajectories. CONCLUSIONS: Almost half of the Chinese new mothers in the study were found to fall into the two groups with minor or major PPD status trajectories, who should be given more attention and awareness from health professionals and researchers. Understanding predictors of group membership could help health providers to identify folks to prioritize getting connected to care as well as forming targeted interventions. Less degree of received support and not attending parenting training were identified to predict PPD trajectory membership. The regular, routine screening of PPD should be conducted at least 12 weeks postpartum, especially for new mothers in the major PPD status trajectory.
