The phytochemical investigation of Viburnum chinshanense leaves led to the isolation and identification of four new phenolic glycosides, viburninsides A-D (1-4), and eight known analogues (5-12). The structures of the four undescribed compounds were determined by spectroscopic techniques, including 1D NMR, 2D NMR, and HRESIMS, and their containing sugar units were confirmed by acid hydrolysis and HPLC analysis of the monosaccharide's chiral derivatives. Additionally, the α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of the isolated compounds were assessed. Compounds 1, 2, 4, 9, and 10 exhibited potential inhibitory activities against α-amylase and α-glucosidase with IC50 values ranging from 35.07 µM to 47.42 µM and 18.27 µM to 43.65 µM, respectively. Molecular docking analysis of compound 4 with the strongest inhibition against the target enzymes was also conducted.

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus is the leading global pathogen of diarrhea-associated mortality and poses a great threat to public health in all age groups. This study aimed to explore the global burden and 30-year change patterns of rotavirus infection-associated deaths. METHODS: Based on the Global Burden of Disease 2019 Study (GBD 2019), we analyzed the age-standardized death rate (ASDR) of rotavirus infection by sex, geographical region, and sociodemographic index (SDI) from 1990 to 2019. A Joinpoint regression model was used to analyze the global trends in rotavirus infection over the 30 years, SaTScan software was used to detect the spatial and temporal aggregations, and a generalized linear model to explore the relationship between sociodemographic factors and death rates of rotavirus infection. RESULTS: Globally, rotavirus infection was the leading cause of diarrheal deaths, accounting for 19.11% of deaths from diarrhea in 2019. Rotavirus caused a higher death burden in African, Oceanian, and South Asian countries in the past three decades. The ASDR of rotavirus declined from 11.39 (95% uncertainty interval [95% UI] 5.46-19.48) per 100,000 people in 1990 to 3.41 (95% UI 1.60-6.01) per 100,000 people in 2019, with an average annual percentage change (AAPC) (- 4.07%, P < 0.05). However, a significant uptrend was found in high-income North America (AAPC = 1.79%, P < 0.05). The death rate was the highest among children under 5 years worldwide. However, the death rates of elderly individuals over 70 years were higher than those of children under 5 years in 2019 among high, high-middle, middle, and low-middle SDI regions. Current health expenditure, gross domestic product per capita, and the number of physicians per 1000 people were significantly negatively correlated with death rates of rotavirus. CONCLUSIONS: Although the global trends in the rotavirus burden have decreased substantially over the past three decades, the burden of rotavirus remained high in Africa, Oceania, and South Asia. Children under 5 years and elderly individuals over 70 years were the populations most at risk for rotavirus infection-associated deaths, especially elderly individuals over 70 years in relatively high SDI regions. More attention should be paid to these areas and populations, and effective public health policies should be implemented in the future.

Compatible solutes are key for the ability of halophilic bacteria to resist high osmotic stress. They have received wide attention from researchers for their excellent osmotic protection properties. Hydroxyectoine is a particularly important compatible solute, but its production by microbes faces several challenges, including low titer/yield, the presence of the byproduct ectoine, and the requirement of high salinity. Here, we aimed to metabolically engineer Escherichia coli to efficiently produce hydroxyectoine in the absence of osmotic stress without accumulating the byproduct ectoine. First, combinatorial optimization of the expression strength of key genes in the ectoine synthesis module and hydroxyectoine synthesis module was conducted. After optimization of the expression of these genes, 12.12 g/L hydroxyectoine and 0.24 g/L ectoine were obtained at 36 h in shake-flask fermentation with the addition of the co-substrate α-ketoglutarate. Further optimization of the addition of α-ketoglutarate achieved the sole production of hydroxyectoine (i.e., no ectoine accumulation), indicating that the supply of α-ketoglutarate is critically important for sole hydroxyectoine production. Finally, quorum sensing-based auto-regulation of intracellular α-ketoglutarate pool was implemented as an alternative to α-ketoglutarate addition by coupling the expression of sucA with the esaI/esaR circuit, which led to 14.93 g/L hydroxyectoine with a unit cell yield of 1.678 g/g and no ectoine accumulation in the absence of osmotic stress. This is the highest reported titer of sole hydroxyectoine production under salinity-free fermentation to date.

Hydrogen energy is considered to be one of the most promising clean energy sources. The development of highly active, low-cost catalysts, and good stability is essential for hydrogen production. Herein, the catalytic activity of a two-dimensional ß-Sb surface doped with main-group elements (N, P, As, O, S, Se, and Te) for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was investigated by density functional theory, and the catalytic activity of the ß-Sb monolayer can be improved by doping group VIA atoms. The catalytic activity of Se@Sb and O@Sb structures at the doping concentration of 2.78% and the S@Sb structure at the doping concentration of 5.56% may be as good as the Pt(111) surface, while keeping energetically stable. In addition, the catalytic performance could be optimized under biaxial strain. Further analysis suggests that the activity is caused by hole states in the lone pair electrons, which are created by the group VIA atom dopants. And our work also reveals that the density of states at the Fermi level could be an appropriate descriptor of the hydrogenation Gibbs free energy. This work not only proposes a novel non-platinum HER catalyst but also provides physical foundations for further application on antimonene-based catalysts.

BACKGROUND: Nitrate (NO3-) is the major source of nitrogen (N) for higher plants aside from its function in transducing the N signaling. Improving N use efficiency of crops has been an effective strategy for promotion of the sustainable agriculture worldwide. The regulatory pathways associating with N uptake and the corresponding biochemical processes impact largely on plant N starvation tolerance. Thus, exploration of the molecular mechanism underlying nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and the gene wealth will pave a way for molecular breeding of N starvation-tolerant crop cultivars. RESULTS: In the current study, we characterized the function of TaNBP1, a guanine nucleotide-binding protein subunit beta gene of wheat (T. aestivum), in mediating the plant N starvation response. TaNBP1 protein harbors a conserved W40 domain and the TaNBP1-GFP (green fluorescence protein) signals concentrate at positions of cytoplasm membrane and cytosol. TaNBP1 transcripts are induced in roots and leaves upon N starvation stress and that this upregulated expression is recovered by N recovery treatment. TaNBP1 overexpression confers improved phenotype, enlarged root system architecture (RSA), and increased biomass for plants upon N deprivation relative to the wild type, associating with its role in enhancing N accumulation and improving reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis. Nitrate transporter (NRT) gene NtNRT2.2 and antioxidant enzyme genes NtSOD1, NtSOD2, and NtCAT1 are transcriptionally regulated under TaNBP1 and contribute to the improved N acquisition and the increased AE activities of plants. CONCLUSIONS: Altogether, TaNBP1 is transcriptional response to N starvation stress. Overexpression of this gene enhances plant N starvation adaptation via improvement of N uptake and cellular ROS homeostasis by modifying transcription of NRT gene NtNRT2.2 and antioxidant enzyme genes NtSOD1, NtSOD2, and NtCAT1, respectively. Our research helps to understand the mechanism underlying plant N starvation response and benefits to genetically engineer crop cultivars with improved NUE under the N-saving cultivation conditions.

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction plays a crucial role in advancing solar fuels, and enhancing the efficiency of the chosen photocatalysts is essential for sustainable energy production. This study demonstrates advancements in the performance of g-C3N4 as a photocatalyst achieved through surface modifications such as exfoliation to increase surface area and surface oxidation for improved charge separation. We also introduce reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in various ratios to both bulk and exfoliated g-C3N4, which effectively mitigates charge recombination and establishes an optimal ratio for enhanced efficiency. g-C3N4/rGO serves to fabricate a hybrid organic/inorganic heterojunction with Cs3Bi2Br9, resulting in a g-C3N4/rGO/Cs3Bi2Br9 composite. This leads to a remarkable increase in photocatalytic conversion of CO2 and H2O to CO, H2 and CH4 at rates of 54.3 (±2.0) µmole- g-1 h-1, surpassing that of pure Cs3Bi2Br9 (11.2 ± 0.4 µmole- g-1 h-1) and bulk g-C3N4 (5.5 ± 0.5 µmole- g-1 h-1). The experimentally determined energy diagram indicates that rGO acts as a solid redox mediator between g-C3N4 and Cs3Bi2Br9 in a Z-scheme heterojunction configuration, ensuring that the semiconductor (Cs3Bi2Br9) with the shallowest conduction band drives the reduction and the one with the deepest valence band (g-C3N4) drives the oxidation. The successful formation of this high-performance heterojunction underscores the potential of the developed composite as a photocatalyst for CO2 reduction, offering promising prospects for advancing the field of solar fuels and achieving sustainable energy goals.

Tetracycline (TC), widely found in various environments, poses significant risks to ecosystems and human health. While efficient biodegradation removes TC, the mechanisms underlying this process have not been elucidated. This study investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying TC biosorption and transfer within the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of strain DX-21 and its biodegradation process using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, molecular docking, and multiomics. Under TC stress, DX-21 increased TC biosorption by secreting more extracellular polysaccharides and proteins, particularly the latter, mitigating toxicity. Moreover, specialized transporter proteins with increased binding capacity facilitated TC movement from the EPS to the cell membrane and within the cell. Transcriptomic and untargeted metabolomic analyses revealed that the presence of TC led to the differential expression of 306 genes and significant alterations in 37 metabolites. Notably, genes related to key enzymes, such as electron transport, peroxidase, and oxidoreductase, exhibited significant differential expression. DX-21 combated and degraded TC by regulating metabolism, altering cell membrane permeability, enhancing oxidative defense, and enhancing energy availability. Furthermore, integrative omics analyses indicated that DX-21 degrades TC via various enzymes, reallocating resources from other biosynthetic pathways. These results advance the understanding of the metabolic responses and regulatory mechanisms of DX-21 in response to TC.

BACKGROUND: Silymarin is recognized for its excellent hepato-protective properties. Recent clinical studies have examined the effects of silymarin on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), highlighting the necessity of further exploration into optimal dosages, active components, and mechanisms of action. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study assessed the anti-inflammatory activity of the principal constituents of silymarin at the cellular level. The therapeutic effects of varying silymarin doses and components on MASLD in mouse models induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) were also examined. These findings indicate the superior efficacy of 80 mg kg-1 silymarin in mitigating liver steatosis and reducing lipid accumulation compared to 30 mg kg-1 silymarin or a combination of silybin and isosilybin A. The mechanism of silymarin involves regulating gut microbiota homeostasis and influencing the TLR4/NF-κB signalling pathway through LPS. Bile acid-targeted metabolomics analysis revealed that silymarin significantly decreases the HFD-induced increase in 7-keto-deoxycholic acid (7-KDCA). Further investigations suggested that 7-KDCA as an antagonist targeted farnesoid X receptor (FXR) and that both silybin and isosilybin A could directly interact with FXR. CONCLUSION: These findings elucidate that 80 mg kg-1 of silymarin can exert therapeutic effects on MASLD mice and offer novel insights into the mechanism of silymarin in treating MASLD. Especially, it was found that silymarin could regulate bile acid metabolism, reduce the concentration of 7-KDCA, and thus perform negative feedback regulation on FXR.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic surgery without general anesthesia can be traced back to the First World War, and thoracic epidural block was used to complete the operation due to a large number of patients with gunshot wounds who needed emergency thoracic surgery. By reducing the intraoperative opioid dose, intraoperative and postoperative opioid-related adverse events such as respiratory depression, nausea and vomiting, delirium, hyperalgesia, and other side effects can be reduced to the benefit of patients. METHODS: A 72-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital with a 5-day history of multifocal pain throughout the body caused by a fall. The injury was not treated at that time, and the pain gradually increased, accompanied by cough with difficulty expelling sputum. DIAGNOSES: Left lung contusion; traumatic pneumonia; multiple left rib fractures; left fluid pneumothorax; thyroid tumor of unknown nature, possibly malignant. Grade I tracheal stenosis; Sequelae of cerebral infarction. Because of goiter and severe tracheal compression, the patient was not intubated and received deopiated general anesthesia combined with epidural anesthesia to preserve spontaneous breathing. OUTCOMES: At the end of the video-assisted thoracoscopic exploration, the patient was immediately conscious and returned directly to the ward 6 min later. The patient was able to move freely after surgery and eat normally within 6 h of surgery. The postoperative visual analog scale score was 2 points, and there were no anesthetic complications during the follow-up. CONCLUSION: The opioid-free anesthesia strategy of tubeless general anesthesia, allowing spontaneous breathing combined with epidural anesthesia in elderly patients with tracheal stenosis undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery can not only avoid accidents and injuries caused by tracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation, but can also significantly reduce postoperative respiratory complications, optimize postoperative analgesia, and help achieve enhanced recovery after surgery.

Objectives: Several countries have successfully eliminated measles, and China is making significant strides toward achieving this goal. This study focused on investigating the patterns of measles infections in Zhejiang Province, China, as well as control measures. The objective was to provide valuable insights that could contribute to the development of nationwide elimination strategies. Methods: We analyzed measles surveillance data from 2005 to 2022 in Zhejiang Province. We utilized a joinpoint regression model to examine trends in measles. Additionally, we employed SaTScan software (version 9.5) to identify spatial-temporal clusters. Finally, we used an age-period-cohort model to assess the effects of age, period, and cohort. Results: The age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of measles infection in Zhejiang Province from 2005 to 2022 was 5.24 per 100,000, showing a consistent and significant downward trend with an annual percentage change of -24.93% (p<0.05). After 2020, the ASIR for measles infection fell to below 0.1 per 100,000. The majority of measles cases occurred in individuals either without an immunization history or with an unknown immunization status, representing 41.06% and 41.40% of the cases from 2010 to 2022, respectively. According to data from the National Measles Surveillance System, the annual rate of discarded measles cases from 2009 to 2014, and the annual rate of discarded measles and rubella cases from 2015 to 2022, were both above 2 per 100,000, indicating the high sensitivity of the measles surveillance system. Conclusion: The significant reduction in measles incidence from 2005 to 2022 demonstrates substantial progress in Zhejiang Province towards the elimination of measles.

This paper reports the isolation of two undescribed phenolic glycosides (1 and 2), together with seven known compounds (3-9) from the branches of Viburnum chinshanense. The structures of undescribed compounds were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic methods (1D NMR, 2D NMR, and HRESIMS). The sugar units of compounds 1 and 2 were identified by acid hydrolysis and HPLC analysis of the chiral derivatives of the monosaccharides. Furthermore, the α­amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of all isolates were evaluated and compounds 1, 5, and 8 displayed potential α­amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities. The molecular docking analyses of compounds 1 and 8 with the potent inhibition towards the target enzymes were also performed.

In this article, we provided a comprehensive overview and in-depth analysis of global patterns and temporal trends in years lived with disability (YLDs) for musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders in individuals aged ≥70. Data on YLDs for MSK disorders in individuals aged ≥70 were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease 2019. The average annual percentage change (AAPC) was calculated to assess the temporal trends in the YLDs rate of MSK disorders. A Bayesian Age-Period-Cohort model was used to predict the YLDs rate up to the year 2040. In 2019, the global rate of YLDs for MSK disorders in individuals aged ≥70 were 4819.81 (95 % UI: 3402.91 - 6550.77) per 100,000 persons. The YLDs rate of MSK disorders in female was 1.36 times higher than that in male, and was highest in high SDI regions. From 1990 to 2019, the global YLDs rate showed a slightly downward trend (AAPC = -0.04 %, 95 % CI: -0.06 % to -0.03 %), while it significantly increased in high, low-middle, low SDI regions. Tobacco and high body mass index were the primary risk factors worldwide, while in low SDI regions, occupational risks emerged as the predominant factors. Up to 2040, the global YLDs rate of MSK disorders are expected to increase by 1.78 %, with 36.39 %, 20.66 %, 18.96 % and 5.32 % growth in other MSK disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, neck pain and osteoarthritis. MSK disorders are a significant and continuously growing public health concern among older adults. Tailored interventions should be developed for older adults, taking into account the variations across distributions, trends, and risk factors in terms of sex and SDI levels.

BACKGROUND: Measles and rubella are vaccine-preventable diseases targeted for elimination in most World Health Organization regions, and China is considered to have momentum towards measles elimination. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the population immunity levels against measles and rubella in Zhejiang Province in China in order to provide valuable insights for informing future public health measures and contributing to the ongoing global campaign against these diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional serological survey was conducted in 2022. A total of 2740 blood samples were collected from healthy individuals spanning the age range of 0-59 years, representing diverse demographic strata across 11 prefectures in Zhejiang Province in China. The sera were tested for measles and rubella IgG antibodies to determine positivity rates and geometric mean concentrations (GMCs). RESULTS: The overall positivity rate for the measles IgG antibody was 85.3%, with a GMC of 588.30 mIU/mL. The positivity rate for the rubella IgG antibody was 70.9%, and the GMC was 35.30 IU/mL. Measles IgG antibody positivity rates across the 0-11 months, 12-23 months, 24-35 months, 3-5 years, 6-9 years, 10-14 years, 15-19 years, 20-29 years, and 30-59 years age groups were 63.1%, 92.5%, 97.0%, 94.0%, 85.8%, 77.3%, 86.9%, 84.9%, and 88.7%, respectively (trend χ2 = 118.34, p < 0.001). Correspondingly, rubella antibody positivity rates for these same age brackets were 55.9%, 87.9%, 94.7%, 88.2%, 69.9%, 54.2%, 72.6%, 67.5%, and 74.3% (trend χ2 = 199.18, p < 0.001). Both univariate and multivariate analyses consistently demonstrated that age, immunization history, and differing economic levels were significant factors contributing to variations in antibody levels. CONCLUSIONS: The seroprevalence of measles and rubella was lower than that required for herd immunity. Periodic vaccination campaigns should be launched to increase immunity.

The aim of this study was to investigate the global epidemiological trends in the incidence and deaths of acute respiratory infections (ARIs), encompassing both upper respiratory infections (URIs) and lower respiratory infections (LRIs), from 1990 to 2021. Using data from the Global Burden of Disease study 2021 (GBD 2021), we utilized the average annual percentage change (AAPC) to examine the trends in the age-standardized incidence rate and deaths rate (ASIR and ASDRs) of URIs and LRIs. In 2021, the global ASIR of URIs and LRIs were 166,770.73 (95 % UI: 148,098.16-189,487.93) per 100,000 and 4283.61 (95 % UI: 4057.03-4524.89) per 100,000, respectively. The highest ASIR of URIs occurred in high-sociodemographic index (SDI) regions (232744.64, 95 % UI: 206887.07-261694.81) per 100,000, whereas LRIs occurred in low-SDI regions (9261.1, 95 % UI: 8741.61-9820.86) per 100,000. In 2021, the global ASDRs of URIs and LRIs were 0.28 (95 % UI: 0.09-0.61) per 100,000 and 28.67 (95 % UI: 25.92-31.07) per 100,000, respectively. The highest ASDRs of both URIs and LRIs were observed in low-SDI regions, with 1.1 (95 % UI: 0.08-2.78) per 100,000 and 70.68 (95 % UI: 62.56-78.62) per 100,000, respectively. From 1990 to 2021, the global ASIR for URIs and LRIs decreased, with AAPCs of -0.17 % (95 % CI: 0.17 % to -0.16 %) and -1.28 % (95 % CI: -1.37 % to -1.22 %), respectively. The global ASDRs also decreased (-3.39 % for URIs; -2.46 % for LRIs). However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the ASIR of URIs increased in many countries, especially in high-SDI regions (rate difference before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in ASIR was 2210.19 per 100,000.) and low-SDI regions (rate difference in ASIR: 111.26 per 100,000). The global incidence and deaths related to ARIs have decreased over the past 32 years. However, it remains a significant public health concern, particularly due to the notable incidence of URIs in high SDI regions and the deaths associated with both URIs and LRIs in low SDI regions. Furthermore, an increase in the incidence of URIs was observed in both high- and low-SDI regions during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the need for increased attention.

Hepatitis E infection is typically caused by contaminated water or food. In July and August 2022, an outbreak of hepatitis E was reported in a nursing home in Zhejiang Province, China. Local authorities and workers took immediate actions to confirm the outbreak, investigated the sources of infection and routes of transmission, took measures to terminate the outbreak, and summarized the lessons learned. An epidemiological investigation was conducted on all individuals in the nursing home, including demographic information, clinical symptoms, history of dietary, water intake and contact. Stool and blood samples were collected from these populations for laboratory examinations. The hygiene environment of the nursing home was also investigated. A case-control study was conducted to identify the risk factors for this outbreak. Of the 722 subjects in the nursing home, 77 were diagnosed with hepatitis E, for an attack rate of 10.66 %. Among them, 18 (23.38 %, 18/77) individuals had symptoms such as jaundice, fever, and loss of appetite and were defined as the population with hepatitis E. The average age of people infected with hepatitis E virus (HEV) was 59.96 years and the attack rate of hepatitis E among women (12.02 %, 59/491) was greater than that among men (7.79 %, 18/231). The rate was the highest among caregivers (22.22 %, 32/144) and lowest among logistics personnel (6.25 %, 2/32); however, these differences were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Laboratory sequencing results indicated that the genotype of this hepatitis E outbreak was 4d. A case-control study showed that consuming pig liver (odds ratio (OR) = 7.50; 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 3.84-16.14, P < 0.001) and consuming raw fruits and vegetables (OR = 5.92; 95 % CI: 1.74-37.13, P = 0.017) were risk factors for this outbreak of Hepatitis E. Moreover, a monitoring video showed that the canteen personnel did not separate raw and cooked foods, and pig livers were cooked for only 2 min and 10 s. Approximately 1 month after the outbreak, an emergency vaccination for HEV was administered. No new cases were reported after two long incubation periods (approximately 4 months). The outbreak of HEV genotype 4d was likely caused by consuming undercooked pig liver, resulting in an attack rate of 10.66 %. This was related to the rapid stir-frying cooking method and the hygiene habit of not separating raw and cooked foods.

Subtype interference has a significant impact on the epidemiological patterns of seasonal influenza viruses (SIVs). We used attributable risk percent [the absolute value of the ratio of the effective reproduction number (Rₑ) of different subtypes minus one] to quantify interference intensity between A/H1N1 and A/H3N2, as well as B/Victoria and B/Yamagata. The interference intensity between A/H1N1 and A/H3N2 was higher in southern China 0.26 (IQR: 0.11-0.46) than in northern China 0.17 (IQR: 0.07-0.24). Similarly, interference intensity between B/Victoria and B/Yamagata was also higher in southern China 0.14 (IQR: 0.07-0.24) than in norther China 0.10 (IQR: 0.04-0.18). High relative humidity significantly increased subtype interference, with the highest relative risk reaching 20.59 (95% CI: 6.12-69.33) in southern China. Southern China exhibited higher levels of subtype interference, particularly between A/H1N1 and A/H3N2. Higher relative humidity has a more pronounced promoting effect on subtype interference.

RATIONALE: Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Opioid-free anesthesia (OFA) is an opioid-sparing technique that focuses on multimodal or balanced analgesia, relying on non-opioid adjuncts and regional anesthesia. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols, often under the auspices of a perioperative pain service, can help guide and promote opioid reduced and OFA, without negatively impacting perioperative pain management or recovery. Ultrasound-guided regional nerve block is currently a good option for OFA due to anesthesiologists' mastery of ultrasound techniques. The safety of the OFA strategy for quadratus lumborum block (QLB) + transversus abdominis plane block (TAP) in the super-elderly patients has not been reported and remains unclear. We report a case of OFA anesthesia in a super-elderly patient with colon cancer. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 102-year-old female was admitted to the hospital due to "abdominal pain for a week" and received conservative treatment for more than 20 days, with poor results. DIAGNOSES: The patient was diagnosed with colorectal cancer associated with bronchiectasis and infection, multiple nodules in the right lower lung, and sinus arrhythmia. INTERVENTIONS: As the patient was a super-elderly patient with multiple diseases, we used an OFA strategy with general anesthesia combined with QLB and TAP. OUTCOMES: The patient awakened quickly and completely after surgery, and extubation was successful 2 min after surgery without anesthesia complications, which is in line with the concept of ERAS. LESSONS: The OFA strategies of ultrasound guidance quadratus lumborum block (Ul-QLB) and ultrasound guidance transversus abdominis plane block (Ul-TAP) may be safe and effective for ERAS in super-elderly patients with colorectal cancer surgery.

As a barrier against external toxic effects, extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) directly affect the toxicity and removal efficiency of exogenous substances. The reaction of EPSs with exogenous substances has been taken into consideration. The contents of EPSs in sludge cultivated by different influent water vary greatly, which leads to great differences in the binding ability and reaction sequence between EPSs and exogenous substances. However, the results in this respect are very limited. In this study, the binding characteristics between exogenous tetracycline (TC)/copper ions (Cu2+) and EPSs from aerobic granular sludge cultured under single and coexisting TC/Cu2+ were assessed by three-dimensional fluorescence-parallel factor analysis. The pollutants in the influent water could directionally induce microorganisms to secrete more EPSs, while fluorescence substances in EPSs could combine with the exogenous substances to lessen their effects. In the presence of coexisting TC and Cu2+ in the influent water, the ability of fluorescence substances in EPSs to combine with exogenous TC or Cu2+ weakened, and humic substances in EPSs were more susceptible than protein substances to binding with exogenous substances. However, the reaction order between EPSs components and exogenous TC or Cu2+ was opposite, and the ability of fluorescence substances in EPSs to combine with exogenous TC or Cu2+ was enhanced under individual TC or Cu2+ existing in the influent water. This study provided new insights into the interaction between EPSs and exogenous substances.

To remove ammonium and tetracycline (TC) from wastewater, a new strain, DX-21, was isolated and exhibited simultaneous removal ability. The performance of DX-21 in TC removal, its removal mechanism, and the potential toxicities of the degradation products were investigated with genomics, mass spectrometry, density functional theory calculations, quantitative structure-activity relationship analyses, and Escherichia coli exposure experiments. DX-21 exhibited removal of ammonium (9.64 mg·L-1·h-1) via assimilation, and TC removal (0.85 mg·L-1·h-1) primarily occurred through cell surface bio-adsorption and biodegradation. Among the 12 identified degradation products, the majority exhibited lower toxicities than TC. Moreover, potential degradation pathways were proposed, including hydroxylation and deamination. Furthermore, DX-21 possessed TC resistance genes, various oxygenases and peroxidases that could potentially contribute to TC degradation. DX-21 colonized activated sludge and significantly enhanced the biodegradation of TC. Therefore, DX-21 showed potential for treating wastewater containing both ammonium and TC.

Ten previously undescribed iridoid constituents, viburnshosins A-E (1-5) and viburnshosides A-E (6-10), together with one known analogue (11), were isolated from the branches of Viburnum chinshanense. Their structures were unambiguously elucidated by a comprehensive analysis of 1D and 2D NMR data, together with HRESIMS spectroscopic data. The absolute configurations of compounds 1-10 were assigned by means of the calculated ECD spectra. Interestingly, compounds 2 and 3 are the first iridoids with an unusual C-3-C-7 oxo bridge. Compounds 4, 5, and 10 displayed remarkable inhibitory effects against α-amylase (IC50: 38.42, 37.65, and 21.64 µM, respectively) and α-glucosidase (IC50: 12.97, 19.34, and 25.71 µM, respectively), comparable to those of the positive control acarbose (IC50: 39.75 and 23.66 µM, respectively). The interaction modes of compounds 4 and 10 with two enzymes were analyzed by molecular modeling.
