RESUMO

Bioremediation is one of the most promising strategies for heavy metal immobilization. A new remediation system was demonstrated in this research, which combined phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) with nZVI@Carbon/Phosphate (nZVI@C/P) composite to remediate lead contaminated soil. Experimental results indicated that the new system (nZVI@C/P + PSB) could effectively convert the labile Pb into the stable fraction after 30 days of incubation, which increased the maximum residual fraction percentage of Pb by 70.58%. The characterization results showed that lead may exist in the forms of Pb5(PO4)3Cl, PbSO4 and 3PbCO3·2Pb(OH)2·H2O in the soil treated with nZVI@C/P + PSB. Meanwhile, soil enzyme activities and Leclercia abundance were enhanced in the treated soil compared with CK during the incubation time. In addition, the specialized functions (e.g. ABC transporters, siderophore metabolism, sulfur metabolism and phosphorus metabolism) in PSB and nZVI@C/P + PSB group were also enhanced. These phenomena proved that the key soil metabolic functions may be maintained and enhanced through the synergistic effect of incubated PSB and nZVI@C/P. The study demonstrated that this new bioremediation system provided feasible way to improve the efficacy for lead contaminated soil remediation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a complex infectious disease with high morbidity and mortality. The inflammation mechanism of IE is a complex network including interactions of inflammatory cytokines and other components of host response. As an important inflammation marker, the prediction ability of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in IE deserves further investigation. METHODS: NLR values were measured and compared between IE patients and healthy controls, good and bad clinical outcome groups. The receiver operating characteristic curves (ROCs) of NLR and cut-off values were measured in IE patients, pathogen-subgroups, and different clinical outcome groups. RESULTS: There were 678 IE patients and 2520 healthy controls enrolled in our study. The number of good and bad clinical outcome patients was 537 and 141, respectively. The value of NLR was significantly higher in IE patients than healthy controls (6.29 ± 9.36 vs. 1.87 ± 0.34, p < 0.001), and the area under the ROC (AUC) was 0.817 (95% CI (0.794, 0.839), p < 0.001). The critical value of NLR for diagnosis of IE was 2.68, with a sensitivity of 69%, and a specificity of 88%. The value of NLR was significantly higher in bad clinical outcome patients than in good clinical outcome patients (5.8 ± 6.02 vs. 3.62 ± 2.61, p < 0.001). The critical value of NLR to predict the outcome of IE was 5.557, with a sensitivity of 39.0% and a specificity of 85.3%. CONCLUSIONS: NLR is a predictive marker for IE patients, especially in Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacteria-infected IE patients. NLR also can predict the outcome of IE. Early detecting NLR upon admission may assist in early diagnosis and risk stratification of patients with IE.

RESUMO

As industrialized animal agriculture expanded rapidly in the last decade, the resultant pollution has generated widespread despoliation of natural resources and environmental victimization in rural China. This study examines the formulation and implementation of national environmental regulations from 2014 to 2019 and finds that the juxtaposing ministerial and provincial jurisdictions resulted in conflicting interpretations of the scale and evaluation criteria of the national policy. We argue that the regulations are more than centralized conservation programs designed to reduce environmental pollution caused by the expansion of animal husbandry. Instead, these regulations are fundamentally state-led rural development initiatives that utilize the designations of ecological protection zones to reconfigure land use and promote scale-up production in agricultural structural adjustment initiatives. The enforcement of these environmental regulations, therefore, constitutes a treadmill of law (ToL) that accelerated the geographical specialization and function intensification of the Chinese husbandry sector.

RESUMO

Meige syndrome (MS) is cranial dystonia characterized by the combination of upper and lower cranial involvement and including binocular eyelid spasms (blepharospasm; BSP) and involuntary movements of the jaw muscles (oromandibular dystonia; OMD). The etiology and pathogenesis of this disorder of the extrapyramidal system are not well-understood. Neurologic and ophthalmic examinations often reveal no abnormalities, making diagnosis difficult and often resulting in misdiagnosis. A small proportion of patients have a family history of the disease, but to date no causative genes have been identified to date and no cure is available, although botulinum toxin A therapy effectively mitigates the symptoms and deep brain stimulation is gaining increasing attention as a viable alternative treatment option. Here we review the history and progress of research on MS, BSP, and OMD, as well as the etiology, pathology, diagnosis, and treatment.

RESUMO

Objective: The emergence of carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacteria (CR-GNB) has brought great challenges to clinical anti-infection treatment around the world. Polymyxins are often considered as the last line of defense in the treatment of CR-GNB infections. In this study, we explored the microbiological efficacy of Polymyxin B (PMB) on different CR-GNB infections as well as the factors influencing microbiological efficacy. Methods: CR-GNB infected patients with PMB-based regimens were enrolled. Clinical and microbiological data were collected from the medical electronic record system of the Second Xiangya hospital. The efficacy of PMB on different CR-GNB was evaluated by the clearance rate at 7-days and within the course of treatment, as well as the 30-day mortality rate. Results: A total of 294 CR-GNB infected patients were enrolled: 154 CR-Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB), 55 CR-Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP), and 85 CR-Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA). The CRAB group had the highest 7-day bacterial clearance rate [(CRAB: 39.0%) vs. (CRKP: 29.4%) vs. (CRPA: 14.5%), P = 0.003] and total bacterial clearance rate [(CRAB: 49.0%) vs. (CRKP: 39.8%) vs. (CRPA: 18.2%), P < 0.001] among the three groups, while the bacterial clearance rate of the CRPA group was the lowest. Multivariate logistic regression showed that the differences among the three groups were multiple CR-GNB infections (P = 0.004), respiratory infections (P = 0.001), PMB resistance (P < 0.001), and the combination of tigecycline (P < 0.001). Binary logistic regression showed that multiple CR-GNB infection [(7-day bacterial clearance: P = 0.004) & (total bacterial clearance: P = 0.011)] and bacterial species [(7-day bacterial clearance: P < 0.001) & (total bacterial clearance: P < 0.001)] were independent risk factors for microbiological efficacy. Conclusion: PMB exhibited differential microbiological efficacy on different types of CR-GNB infections; it had the best effect on CRAB, followed by CRKP and CRPA. Multiple CR-GNB infections and bacterial species were independent risk factors for microbiological efficacy.
