This study aimed to investigate altered static and dynamic functional network connectivity (FNC) and its correlation with clinical symptoms in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). One hundred and fifty-nine patients with KOA and 73 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects (HS) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and clinical evaluations. Group independent component analysis (GICA) was applied, and seven resting-state networks were identified. Patients with KOA had decreased static FNC within the default mode network (DM), visual network (VS), and cerebellar network (CB) and increased static FNC between the subcortical network (SC) and VS (p < 0.05, FDR corrected). Four reoccurring FNC states were identified using k-means clustering analysis. Although abnormalities in dynamic FNCs of KOA patients have been found using the common window size (22 TR, 44 s), but the results of the clustering analysis were inconsistent when using different window sizes, suggesting dynamic FNCs might be an unstable method to compare brain function between KOA patients and HS. These recent findings illustrate that patients with KOA have a wide range of abnormalities in the static and dynamic FNCs, which provided a reference for the identification of potential central nervous therapeutic targets for KOA treatment and might shed light on the other musculoskeletal pain neuroimaging studies.

BACKGROUND: Patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA)/HLA-B27-associated acute anterior uveitis (AAU) experience recurring acute flares, which pose significant visual and financial challenges. Despite established links between SpA and HLA-B27-associated AAU, the exact mechanism involved remains unclear, and further understanding is needed for effective prevention and treatment. METHODS: To investigate the acute pathogenesis of SpA/HLA-B27-associated AAU, Mendelian randomization (MR) and single-cell transcriptomic analyses were employed. The MR incorporated publicly available protein quantitative trait locus data from previous studies, along with genome-wide association study data from public databases. Causal relationships between plasma proteins and anterior uveitis were assessed using two-sample MR. Additionally, colocalization analysis was performed using Bayesian colocalization. Single-cell transcriptome analysis utilized the anterior uveitis dataset from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Dimensionality reduction, clustering, transcription factor analysis, pseudotime analysis, and cell communication analysis were subsequently conducted to explore the underlying mechanisms involved. RESULTS: Mendelian randomization analysis revealed that circulating levels of AIF1 and VARS were significantly associated with a reduced risk of developing SpA/HLA-B27-associated AAU, with AIF1 showing a robust correlation with anterior uveitis onset. Colocalization analysis supported these findings. Single-cell transcriptome analysis showed predominant AIF1 expression in myeloid cells, which was notably lower in the HLA-B27-positive group. Pseudotime analysis revealed dendritic cell terminal positions in differentiation branches, accompanied by gradual decreases in AIF1 expression. Based on cell communication analysis, CD141+CLEC9A+ classic dendritic cells (cDCs) and the APP pathway play crucial roles in cellular communication in the Spa/HLA-B27 group. CONCLUSIONS: AIF1 is essential for the pathogenesis of SpA/HLA-B27-associated AAU. Myeloid cell differentiation into DCs and decreased AIF1 levels are also pivotal in this process.

AIM: Wuzhi preparations (WZP) are commonly administrated with tacrolimus (TAC) in China to improve the liver function and increase the exposure of TAC. This study aims to investigate the effects of WZP on TAC in pediatric heart transplantation (HTx) patients carrying the CYP3A5*1 allele during the early period after transplantation and also make a comparison with these effects in adult recipients. METHODS: A total of 81 recipients with CYP3A5*1 allele were included and divided into the pediatric group (n = 29) and adult group (n = 52). The changes in TAC dose-corrected trough blood concentrations (C0 /D), dose requirement as well as intra-patient variability(IPV) of C0 /D after co-therapy with WZP were evaluated. RESULTS: The TAC C0 /D was significantly increased 1.7 and 1.8 times after co-administration of WZP in the pediatric and adult groups, respectively. We further analyzed the pediatric patients, found that no statistical difference was observed in TAC C0 /D before and after co-therapy with WZP in children <6 years old. The changes of C0 /D increased with the dose of the active ingredient (Schisantherin A) in adult patients, but not in pediatric patients. TAC IPV was reduced by 10.5% in pediatric patients and 4.8% in adult patients when co-administrated with WZP. Furthermore, after taking WZP, the AST and TB were dramatically lowered in pediatric recipients. CONCLUSION: Our study is the first attempt to demonstrate the effects of WZP on TAC in pediatric HTx recipients. By comparing these effects to those observed in adult recipients, valuable insights can be gained regarding the efficacy and potential benefits of WZP in the pediatric population.

KEY MESSAGE: Immunofluorescence staining with frozen sections of plant tissues and a nest tube is convenient and effective, and broadens the applicability of immunofluorescence staining. Immunofluorescence staining is an indispensable and extensively employed technique for determining the subcellular localization of chloroplast division proteins. At present, it is difficult to effectively observe the localization of target proteins in leaves that are hard, or very thin, or have epidermal hair or glands with the current immunofluorescence staining methods. Moreover, signals of target proteins were predominantly detected in mesophyll cells, not the cells of other types. Thus, the method of immunofluorescence staining was further explored for improvement in this study. The plant tissue was embedded with 50% PEG4000 at -60℃, which was then cut into sections by a cryomacrotome. The sections were immediately immersed in fixation solution. Then, the sample was transferred into a special nested plastic tube, which facilitated the fixation and immunofluorescence staining procedures. The use of frozen sections in this method enabled a short processing time and reduced material requirements. By optimizing the thickness of the sections, a large proportion of the cells could be well stained. With this method, we observed the localization of a chloroplast division protein FtsZ1 in the wild-type Arabidopsis and various chloroplast division mutants. Meanwhile, the localization of FtsZ1 was also observed not only in mesophyll cells, but also in guard cells and epidermal cells in a lot of other plant species, including many species with hard leaf tissues. This method is not only easy to use, but also expands the scope of applicability for immunofluorescence staining.

Postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) is the most common functional dyspepsia (FD) subtype. Early satiety is one of the cardinal symptoms of the PDS subtype in FD patients. The heterogeneity of symptoms in FD patients hampered therapy for patients based on specific symptoms, necessitating a symptom-based understanding of the pathophysiology of FD. To investigate the correlation between reward circuit and symptom severity of PDS patients, seed (Nucleus accumbens, NAc, a key node in the reward circuit) based resting-state functional connectivity (FC) was applied in the neuroimaging data analysis. The results demonstrated that the patients with PDS manifested strengthened FC between NAc and the caudate, putamen, pallidum, amygdala, hippocampus, thalamus, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and insula. Moreover, the FC between NAc and ACC, insula, thalamus, and hippocampus exhibited significant positive associations with symptom severity. More importantly, the strengthened FC between NAc and the ACC, insula, amygdala, and hippocampus were found associated with the early satiety symptom of patients with PDS. This study indicated that the altered FC of reward circuit regions may play a role in the pathophysiology of patients with PDS, and some of the aberrant NAc-based FC within the reward circuit were more related to the early satiety of patients with PDS. These findings improve our symptom-based understanding of the central pathophysiology of FD, lay the groundwork for an objective diagnosis of FD, and shed light on the precise prescription for treating FD based on symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Tumor microenvironment plays an important role in tumor progression. This study aims to explore the role of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in GC and the underlying mechanism. METHODS: Cell viability, proliferation, invasion and migration were assessed by MTT, EdU, transwell and wound healing assays, respectively. Sphere formation assay was used to evaluate cell stemness. Glucose consumption, lactate production and ATP consumption were measured to assess glycolysis. In addition, The RNA and protein expression were detected by qRT-PCR and western blot. The interaction between wingless Type MMTV Integration Site Family, Member 5 A (WNT5A) and hexokinase 2 (HK2) was verified by Co-immunoprecipitation. The xenograft model was established to explore the function of CAFs on GC tumor growth in vivo. RESULTS: CAFs promoted the proliferation, metastasis, stemness and glycolysis of GC cells. WNT5A was upregulated in CAFs, and CAFs enhanced WNT5A expression in GC cells. Knockdown of WNT5A in either GC cells or CAFs repressed the progression of GC cells. In addition, WNT5A promoted HK2 expression, and overexpression of HK2 reversed the effect of WNT5A knockdown in CAFs on GC cells. Besides, knockdown of WNT5A in CAFs inhibits tumor growth in vivo. CONCLUSION: CAF-derived WNT5A facilitates the progression of GC via regulating HK2 expression.

J-aggregation brings intriguing optical and electronic properties to molecular dyes and significantly expands their applicability across diverse domains, yet the challenge for rationally designing J-aggregating dyes persists. Herein, we developed a large number of J-aggregating dyes from scratch by progressively refining structure of a common heptamethine cyanine. J-aggregates with sharp spectral bands (full-width at half-maximum≤38 nm) are attained by introducing a branched structure featuring a benzyl and a trifluoroacetyl group at meso-position of dyes. Fine-tuning the benzyl group enables spectral regulation of J-aggregates. Analysis of single crystal data of nine dyes reveals a correlation between J-aggregation propensity and molecular arrangement within crystals. Some J-aggregates are successfully implemented in multiplexed optoacoustic and fluorescence imaging in animals. Notably, three-color multispectral optoacoustic tomography imaging with high spatiotemporal resolution is achieved, owing to the sharp and distinct absorption bands of the J-aggregates.

Dyes with extended conjugate structures are the focus of extensive design and synthesis efforts, aiming to confer unique and improved optical and electronic properties. Such advancements render these dyes applicable across a wide spectrum of uses, ranging from second-window near-infrared (NIR-II) bioimaging to organic photovoltaics. Nevertheless, the inherent benefits of long conjugation are often accompanied by persistent challenges like aggregation, fluorescence quenching, absorption blueshift, and low stability and poor water solubility. Herein, a unique structural design strategy termed "homo-dyad with outer hydration layer" is introduced to address these inherent problems, tailored for the development of imaging probes exhibiting long absorption/emission wavelengths. This approach involves bringing two heptamethine cyanines together through a flexible linker, forming a homo-dyad structure, while strategically attaching four polyethylene glycol (PEG9) chains to the terminal heterocycles. This approach imparts excellent water solubility, biocompatibility, and enhanced chemical, photo-, and spectral stability for the dyes. Utilizing this strategy, a biomarker-activatable probe (HD-FL-4PEG9-N) for NIR-II fluorescent and 3D multispectral optoacoustic tomography imaging is developed, and its effectiveness in disease visualization. It can not only serve as an injectable probe for acute kidney injury imaging due to its high water solubility, but also a sprayable probe for imaging bacterial-infected wounds.

Halide perovskites are rich in ionic diffusion phenomena due to their low activation energy. The soft lead iodide lattice can, in theory, endow the system with more complex defect collaborative motions. In this work, we systematically investigated the hopping mechanics of iodide interstitials with respect to various defect behaviors, such as anti-Frenkel disorder creation and annihilation. We found that the existence of iodide vacancies and interstitials can effectively lower the creation barrier of additional anti-Frenkel disorder in the halide perovskite. The free energy barriers for generating additional Frenkel defect pairs vary from 0.25 to 0.43 eV, in the proximity of those of the original iodide defects at 300 K. This finding suggests that the spontaneous creation of a specific level of anti-Frenkel disorder facilitates long-range annihilation and defect hopping processes.

Wounds infected with bacteria, if left untreated, have the potential to escalate into life-threatening conditions, such as sepsis, which is characterized by widespread inflammation and organ damage. A comprehensive approach to treating bacterial-infected wounds, encompassing the control of bacterial infection, biofilm eradication, and inflammation regulation, holds significant importance. Herein, a microneedle (MN) patch (FM@ST MN) has been developed, with silk fibroin (SF) and tannic acid-based hydrogel serving as the matrix. Encapsulated within the MNs are the AIEgen-based activatable probe (FQ-H2O2) and the NLRP3 inhibitor MCC950, serving as the optical reporter/antibacterial agent and the inflammation regulator, respectively. When applied onto bacterial-infected wounds, the MNs in FM@ST MN penetrate bacterial biofilms and gradually degrade, releasing FQ-H2O2 and MCC950. The released FQ-H2O2 responds to endogenously overexpressed reactive oxygen species (H2O2) at the wound site, generating a chromophore FQ-OH which emits noticeable NIR-II fluorescence and optoacoustic signals, enabling real-time imaging for outcome monitoring; and this chromophore also exhibits potent antibacterial capability due to its dual positive charges and shows negligible antibacterial resistance. However, the NLRP3 inhibitor MCC950, upon release, suppresses the activation of NLRP3 inflammasomes, thereby mitigating the inflammation triggered by bacterial infections and facilitating wound healing. Furthermore, SF in FM@ST MN aids in tissue repair and regeneration by promoting the proliferation of epidermal cells and fibroblasts and collagen synthesis. This MN system, free from antibiotics, holds promise as a solution for treating and monitoring bacterially infected wounds without the associated risk of antimicrobial resistance.

Tacrolimus (TAC) has high pharmacokinetic (PK) variability during the early transplantation period. The relationships between whole-blood and intracellular TAC concentrations and clinical outcomes remain controversial. This study identifies the factors affecting the PK variability of TAC and characterizes the relationships between whole-blood and intracellular TAC concentrations. Data regarding whole-blood TAC concentrations of 1,787 samples from 215 renal transplant recipients (<90 days postoperative) across two centers and intracellular TAC concentrations (648 samples) digitized from previous studies were analyzed using nonlinear mixed-effects modeling. The effects of potential covariates were screened, and the distribution of whole-blood to intracellular TAC concentration ratios (RWB:IC) was estimated. The final model was evaluated using bootstrap, goodness of fit, and prediction-corrected visual predictive checks. The optimal dosing regimens and target ranges for each type of immune cell subsets were determined using Monte Carlo simulations. A two-compartment model adequately described the data, and the estimated mean TAC CL/F was 23.6 L·h-1 (relative standard error: 11.5 %). The hematocrit level, CYP3A5*3 carrier status, co-administration with Wuzhi capsules, and tapering prednisolone dose may contribute to the high variability of TAC PK variability during the early post-transplant period. The estimated RWB:IC of all TAC concentrations in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was 4940, and inter-center variability of PBMCs was observed. The simulated TAC target range in PBMCs was 20.2-85.9 pg·million cells-1. Inter-center variability in intracellular concentrations should be taken into account in further analyses. TAC dosage adjustments can be guided based on PK/PD variability and simulated intracellular concentrations.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common condition that is characterized by metabolic impairments. Exercise therapy has proven effective in improving the physiological and psychological states of patients with T2DM; however, the influence of different exercise modalities on metabolic profiles is not fully understood. This study first aimed to investigate the metabolic changes associated with T2DM among patients and then to evaluate the potential physiological effects of different exercise modalities (Tai Chi and brisk walking) on their metabolic profiles. METHODS: This study included 20 T2DM patients and 11 healthy subjects. Patients were randomly allocated to either the Tai Chi or walking group to perform Dijia simplified 24-form Tai Chi or brisk walking (80-100 m/min), with 90 minutes each time, three times per week for 12 weeks, for a total of 36 sessions. The healthy group maintained daily living habits without intervention. Glycemic tests were conducted at the baseline and after 12 weeks. Serum and urine samples were collected for untargeted metabolomic analyses at baseline and 12 weeks to examine the differential metabolic profiles between T2DM and healthy subjects, and the metabolic alterations of T2DM patients before and after exercise therapy. RESULTS: Compared to the healthy group, T2DM patients exhibited metabolic disturbances in carbohydrates (fructose, mannose, galactose, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis), lipids (inositol phosphate), and amino acids (arginine, proline, cysteine, methionine, valine, leucine, and isoleucine) metabolism, including 20 differential metabolites in the serum and six in the urine. After exercise, the glycemic results showed insignificant changes. However, patients who practiced Tai Chi showed significant improvements in their post-treatment metabolic profiles compared to baseline, with nine serum and six urine metabolites, including branch-chained amino acids (BCAAs); while those in the walking group had significantly altered nine serum and four urine metabolites concerning steroid hormone biosynthesis and arachidonic acid metabolism compared to baseline. CONCLUSION: T2DM patients displayed impaired carbohydrate, lipid, and amino acid metabolism, and exercise therapy improved their metabolic health. Different modalities may act through different pathways. Tai Chi may improve disrupted BCAAs metabolism, whereas brisk walking mainly regulates steroid hormone biosynthesis and arachidonic acid metabolism.

Sudden hemorrhage stemming from internal organ wounds poses a grave and potentially fatal risk if left untreated. Injectable-hydrogel-based tissue sealants featuring multiple actions, including fit-to-shape in situ gelation, rapid hemostasis, pro-angiogenic, anti-bacterial and outcome tracking, are ideal for the management of organ trauma wounds. Herein, an injectable-hydrogel tissue sealant AN@CD-PEG&TQ which consists of four-arm 4-arm poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-SC) succinimidyl carbonate), AN@CD nanoprobe, and two bioactive peptides (anti-microbial peptide Tet213 and pro-angiogenic peptide QK) is developed. Among them, AN@CD nanoparticles form through host/guest complexation of amino-group-containing ß-cyclodextrin and adamantyl group, enabling in situ biomarker (NO)-activatable optoacoustic/NIR-II: Near-infrared second biological window fluorescent imaging. The ample ─NH2 groups on the surface of AN@CD readily engage in rapid cross-linking with succinimidyl ester groups located at the ends of four-arm PEG-SC. This cross-linking expedites the gelation process without necessitating additional initiators or cross-linking agents; thus, significantly enhancing both hydrogel's application convenience and biocompatibility. Bioactive peptides (Tet213 and QK) safeguard against possible bacterial infections, facilitate angiogenesis, and eventually, improve organ wounds healing. This hydrogel-based tissue sealant demonstrates superior therapeutic and bioimaging performance in various mouse models including liver hemorrhage, gastric perforation, and bacterial-infected skin wound mouse models, highlighting its potential as a high-performance wound sealant for organ bleeding wound management.

RESUMO

Neuroimaging technology provides objective and visualized research tool to study the mechanisms of acupuncture effects. Building on a systematic review of previous clinical studies on acupuncture treatment for functional dyspepsia using neuroimaging technology, this paper summarizes and synthesizes past researches from 4 aspects: acupoint-specific effects, factors influencing the effects, different physiological responses, and predictive factors for acupuncture efficacy. It suggests that acupuncture treatment for FD involves central integration with disease-targeted (acupuncture treatment can target and regulate abnormal brain functional activity patterns in patients with FD), meridian-specific (stimulation of specific acupuncture points along the stomach meridian can significantly regulate abnormal brain functional activity patterns in FD patients), and dynamic conditional features(the effects of acupuncture treatment for FD are influenced by multiple factors). Lastly, considering the current research status, this paper outlines prospects in terms of research subjects, influencing factors, and result validation, aiming to provide references for future in-depth research.

Enhancing the flame retardancy of electrolytes and the stability of lithium anodes is of great significance to improve the safety performance of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. It is well known that the most commonly used ether based electrolyte solvents in Li-S batteries have a lower flash point and higher volatility than the ester electrolyte solvents in Li-ion batteries. Hence, lithium-sulfur batteries have greater safety risks than lithium-ion batteries. Herein, ethoxy(pentafluoro)cyclotriphosphazene (PFPN), which is commonly used as a flame retardant for ester electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries, is utilized as both a film-forming electrolyte additive and a flame retardant additive for the ether electrolyte to investigated its applicability in Li-S batteries. It is found that the ether electrolyte containing PFPN not only has good flame retardant properties and a wide potential window of about 5 V, but also can form a stable SEI film on the surface of a lithium anode. As a result, with the ether-based electrolyte containing 10 wt% PFPN, Li-Cu and Li-S batteries all delivered a stable cycling performance with a high coulombic Efficiency and a long-lifespan performance, which were all superior to the batteries using the ether-based electrolyte without PFPN. This study demonstrates an effective solution to solve the problems of flammable ether-based electrolytes and reactive lithium anodes, and it may contribute to the development of safe Li-S batteries.

There are the differences in the location of some acupoints between textbooks Meridians and Acupoints and Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Both of the textbooks are in the category of the "14th Five-Year Plan". The differences in acupoint location have brought some confusion for students, full-time teachers and researchers in the field of traditional Chinese medicine. In the paper, based on GB/T 12346-2021: Nomenclature and Location of Meridian Points, published in2021, and in reference with GB/T 12346-2006: Nomenclature and Location of Acupuncture Points, published in 2006, the discrepancy in the acupoint location was systematically collated in the aspects of the expression style and layout, text expression and potential difference of location between these two textbooks, published by China Press of Traditional Chinese Medicine, People's Medical Publishing House and China Science Publishing. Based on the historical evolution and the academic controversy of acupoint positioning, the reasons of the differences in acupoint location were analyzed, the potential influences on the teaching, examination, competition and research of Chinese medicine acupuncture were explored, and the suggestions for solution were proposed.

Introduction: Acupuncture is effective for patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP), which can relieve pain intensity and regulate negative emotional states such as pain-related anxiety and depression. Previous studies mainly discuss the analgesic mechanism of acupuncture treatment of CLBP, but there are multiple dimensions to pain, including sensation, emotion and cognition. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the central mechanism of acupuncture for CLBP from the perspective of emotional regulation by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Methods and Analysis: A total of 72 patients with CLBP will be recruited in the study and randomly assigned to the verum acupuncture group or the sham acupuncture group. The trail will last for 18 weeks including a 2-week baseline, a 4-week treatment and a 12-week for follow-up period. The primary outcomes are the visual analog scale (VAS) and the Japanese Orthopaedic Association Scores (JOA) score. The secondary outcomes are the 12-item short form health survey (SF-12), the state trait anxiety inventory (STAI), the self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS). The VAS, JOA, STAI SAS and SDS will be collected at baseline, week 2, week 4, and after follow-up. The SF-12 will be evaluated at baseline, week 2 and week 4. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data will be collected at baseline and the end of treatment. Emotion-related brain regions will be chosen as regions of interest (ROIs). The gray matter volume (GMV), amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), regional homogeneity (ReHo), functional connectivity (FC), and large-scale functional brain network based on these ROIs will be analyzed within and between the two groups. Discussion: This study will verify the emotional regulation of acupuncture and explore the mechanism of acupuncture for emotion regulation in patients with CLBP. The hypothalamus is a well-established core structure in the sleep-wake cycle. While previous studies have not consistently found whole hypothalamus volume changes in chronic insomnia disorder (CID), differences may exist at the smaller substructural level of the hypothalamic nuclei. The study aimed to investigate the differences in total and subfield hypothalamic volumes, between CID patients and healthy controls (HCs) in vivo, through an advanced deep learning-based automated segmentation tool. A total of 150 patients with CID and 155 demographically matched HCs underwent T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance scanning. We utilized FreeSurfer v7.2 for automated segmentation of the hypothalamus and its five nuclei. Additionally, correlation and causal mediation analyses were performed to investigate the association between hypothalamic volume changes, insomnia symptom severity, and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis-related blood biomarkers. CID patients exhibited larger volumes in the right anterior inferior, left anterior superior, and left posterior subunits of the hypothalamus compared to HCs. Moreover, we observed a positive association between blood corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) levels and insomnia severity, with anterior inferior hypothalamus (a-iHyp) hypertrophy mediating this relationship. In conclusion, we found significant volume increases in several hypothalamic subfield regions in CID patients, highlighting the central role of the HPA axis in the pathophysiology of insomnia.

The blotched snakehead Channa maculata is an important economical freshwater species in East Asia. However, there has been relatively little research conducted on the correlation between gender and gut microbes. In this study, 36 of 1000 blotched snakeheads were randomly selected for growth performance measurement and gut microbiota high-throughput sequencing. Results showed that microbial diversity, composition, and metabolic functions were altered by gender and growth performance except the microbial network. In our study, Proteobacteria were the most abundant phylum, with Fusobacteria showing enrichment in males and Bacteroidetes in females. Notably, phylum Deinococcus-Thermus was identified as a significant biomarker. The Cetobacterium was the most abundant genus-level taxon. Furthermore, gut microbes specializing in the production of gut-healthy substances, such as coenzymes and vitamins, were identified as biomarkers in the fast-growing group. Our investigation highlighted the impact of gender on the composition and abundance of gut microbial biomarkers in both males and females, thereby influencing differential growth performance through the modulation of specific metabolic functions.

BACKGROUND: Renal sympathetic denervation (RDN) reduces blood pressure (BP). METHODS: This single-arm open-label study enrolled patients with resistant hypertension (RH) and treat them by CT-guided ozone mediated lumbar-renal sympathetic denervation (L-RDN). The primary endpoint was to assess the changes of BP over 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) and to evaluate the anti-hypertensive medication burden (AHMB) at 3-month follow-up. This study was registered in Chictr.org.cn (ChiCTR2300071375). RESULTS: 17 patients (mean age 65.12 ± 10.77 years) with AHMB of 4.12 ± 1.11 were enrolled. After the procedure, 7 patients (46.7 %) matched the criteria for antihypertensive medication reduction. The AHMB decreased to 3.87 ± 0.96 for the whole objectives and from 3.87 ± 0.96 to 3.55 ± 0.78 for patients with normal baseline renal function. On top of the lessened AHMB, L-RDN further reduced morning systolic BP (SBP) by -8.6 ± 4.0 mmHg (p = 0.034) and diastolic BP (DBP) by -4.6 ± 2.1 mmHg (p = 0.032) for all participants and morning SBP by -13.2 ± 3.6 mmHg (p < 0.001), morning DBP by -6.2 ± 2.4 mmHg (p = 0.011) and daytime SBP by -4.1 ± 1.6 mmHg (p = 0.009) for those with normal baseline renal function at 3-month of follow-up. No adverse events were reported intra- and post operation. CONCLUSIONS: CT-guided ozone-mediated L-RDN might be an innovative approach of RDN for treating RH. Confirmatory studies are warranted.
