RESUMO

Previous studies suggest a role for inflammation in hepatocarcinogenesis. However, no study has comprehensively evaluated associations between circulating inflammatory proteins and risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) among the general population. We conducted a nested case-control study in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS) with 56 pairs of incident HCC cases and controls. External validation was performed in the UK Biobank (34 HCC cases and 48,471 non-HCC controls). Inflammatory protein levels were measured in pre-diagnostic plasma using the Olink® Inflammation Panel. We used conditional logistic regression to calculate multivariable odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between a 1-standard deviation (SD) increase in biomarker levels and HCC risk, considering a statistically significant threshold of false discovery rate (FDR)-adjusted p < .05. In the NHS/HPFS, among 70 analyzed proteins with call rates >80%, 15 proteins had significant associations with HCC risk (pFDR < .05). Two proteins (stem cell factor, OR per SD = 0.31, 95% CI = 0.16-0.58; tumor necrosis factor superfamily member 12, OR per SD = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.31-0.85) were inversely associated whereas 13 proteins were positively associated with risk of HCC; positive ORs per SD ranged from 1.73 for interleukin (IL)-10 to 2.35 for C-C motif chemokine-19. A total of 11 proteins were further replicated in the UK Biobank. Seven of the eight selected positively associated proteins also showed positive associations with HCC risk by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, with ORs ranging from 1.56 for IL-10 to 2.72 for hepatocyte growth factor. More studies are warranted to further investigate the roles of these observed inflammatory proteins in HCC etiology, early detection, risk stratification, and disease treatment.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) may have a negative impact on bowel habits. We aimed to assess the association between UPF and unprocessed or minimally processed food (MPF) intake and bowel habits among adults in the United States (U.S.). METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2010). We used two 24-hour dietary recalls and, based on the Nova classification, calculated intakes of UPFs and MPFs. Constipation and diarrhea were defined using the Bristol Stool Form Scale and stool frequency. We performed survey-weighted logistic regression and substitution analysis to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Among 12,716 U.S. adults, there were 1290 cases of constipation and 1067 cases of diarrhea. Median UPF and MPF intakes were 26.5% and 66.2% of total grams per day, respectively. Greater UPF consumption (in % gram/d) was associated with higher odds of constipation (adjusted OR [aORQ4 vs Q1], 2.20; 95% CI, 1.76-2.74) (Ptrend < .001) but not diarrhea (aORQ4 vs Q1, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.62-1.09) (Ptrend = .12). Increased MPF consumption was associated with lower odds of constipation (aORQ4 vs Q1, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.370-0.57) (Ptrend < .001). Associations with constipation were attenuated after adjusting for diet quality (aORQ4 vs Q1, UPF, 1.53; MPF, 0.69). Substituting 10% of UPF intake with an equivalent proportion of MPFs was associated with lower odds of constipation (aOR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.87-0.93). CONCLUSIONS: UPF intake was associated with higher odds of constipation, whereas the odds were lower with greater MPF consumption. The effect of food processing on bowel habits was independent of diet quality.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Research into the relationship between an Energy-adjusted Diet-Inflammatory Index (E-DII) and a wider health-related biomarkers profile is limited. Much of the existing evidence centers on traditional metabolic biomarkers in populations with chronic diseases, with scarce data on healthy individuals. Thus, this study aims to investigate the association between an E-DII score and 30 biomarkers spanning metabolic health, endocrine, bone health, liver function, cardiovascular, and renal functions, in healthy individuals. METHODS AND RESULTS: 66,978 healthy UK Biobank participants, the overall mean age was 55.3 (7.9) years were included in this cross-sectional study. E-DII scores, based on 18 food parameters, were categorised as anti-inflammatory (E-DII < -1), neutral (-1 to 1), and pro-inflammatory (>1). Regression analyses, adjusted for confounding factors, were conducted to investigate the association of 30 biomarkers with E-DII. Compared to those with an anti-inflammatory diet, individuals with a pro-inflammatory diet had increased levels of 16 biomarkers, including six cardiometabolic, five liver, and four renal markers. The concentration difference ranged from 0.27 SD for creatinine to 0.03 SD for total cholesterol. Conversely, those on a pro-inflammatory diet had decreased concentrations in six biomarkers, including two for endocrine and cardiometabolic. The association range varied from -0.04 for IGF-1 to -0.23 for SHBG. CONCLUSION: This study highlighted that a pro-inflammatory diet was associated with an adverse profile of biomarkers linked to cardiometabolic health, endocrine, liver function, and renal health.

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are associated with abnormal cardiovascular biomarkers and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, studies investigating associations between sleep problems and CVD biomarkers have reported conflicting findings. This study examined the associations between sleep problems and CVD biomarkers in the United States. METHODS: Data were from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2007-2018) and analyses were restricted to adults ≥ 20 years (n = 23,749). CVD biomarkers [C-reactive Protein (CRP), low-density lipoproteins, high-density lipoproteins (HDL), triglycerides, insulin, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and fasting blood glucose] were categorized as abnormal or normal using standardized cut-off points. Sleep problems were assessed by sleep duration (short [≤ 6 h], long [≥ 9 h], and recommended [> 6 to < 9 h) and self-reported sleep disturbance (yes, no). Multivariable logistic regression models explored the associations between sleep duration, sleep disturbance, and CVD biomarkers adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle behaviors. RESULTS: The mean sleep duration was 7.1 ± 1.5 h and 25.1% of participants reported sleep disturbances. Compared to participants with the recommended sleep duration, those with short sleep duration had higher odds of abnormal levels of HDL (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.05-1.39), CRP (aOR = 3.08, 95% CI = 1.18-8.05), HbA1c (aOR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.05-1.49), and insulin (aOR = 1.24, 95% CI = 1.03-1.51). Long sleep duration was associated with increased odds of abnormal CRP (aOR = 6.12, 95% CI = 2.19-17.15), HbA1c (aOR = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.09-2.17), and blood glucose levels (aOR = 1.45, 95% CI = 1.07-1.95). Sleep disturbance predicted abnormal triglyceride (aOR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.01-1.37) and blood glucose levels (aOR = 1.24, 95% CI = 1.04-1.49). CONCLUSION: Short and long sleep durations were positively associated with abnormal CRP, HDL, HbA1c, blood glucose, and insulin levels, while sleep disturbance was associated with abnormal triglyceride and blood glucose levels. Since sleep is a modifiable factor, adopting healthy sleeping habits may create a balanced metabolism and reduce the risk of developing a CVD. Our study may provide insights into the relationship between sleep duration, sleep disturbance, and CVD risk.

BACKGROUND: Cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea), a progeny of the cross between A. duranensis and A. ipaensis, is an important oil and protein crop from South America. To date, at least six Arachis genomes have been sequenced. WRKY transcription factors (TFs) play crucial roles in plant growth, development, and response to abiotic and biotic stresses. WRKY TFs have been identified in A. duranensis, A. ipaensis, and A. hypogaea cv. Tifrunner; however, variations in their number and evolutionary patterns across various Arachis spp. remain unclear. RESULTS: WRKY TFs were identified and compared across different Arachis species, including A. duranensis, A. ipaensis, A. monticola, A. hypogaea cultivars (cv.) Fuhuasheng, A. hypogaea cv. Shitouqi, and A. hypogaea cv. Tifrunner. The results showed that the WRKY TFs underwent dynamic equilibrium between diploid and tetraploid peanut species, characterized by the loss of old WRKY TFs and retention of the new ones. Notably, cultivated peanuts inherited more conserved WRKY orthologs from wild tetraploid peanuts than their wild diploid donors. Analysis of the W-box elements and protein-protein interactions revealed that different domestication processes affected WRKY evolution across cultivated peanut varieties. WRKY TFs of A. hypogaea cv. Fuhuasheng and Shitouqi exhibited a similar domestication process, while those of cv. Tifrunner of the same species underwent a different domestication process based on protein-protein interaction analysis. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides new insights into the evolution of WRKY TFs in Arachis spp.

Using linked birth and death certificates for participants served by a Healthy Start program in South Carolina and community controls, we found that the Healthy Start program contributed to significant improvements in prenatal care, breastfeeding initiation, and participation in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children and significant reductions in inadequate weight gain and large-for-gestational-age births. However, Healthy Start participants were more likely to gain excessive weight during pregnancy, and there were no significant differences in perinatal outcomes. Images captured during marine engineering operations suffer from color distortion and low contrast. Underwater image enhancement helps to alleviate these problems. Many deep learning models can infer multi-source data, where images with different perspectives exist from multiple sources. To this end, we propose a multichannel deep convolutional neural network (MDCNN) linked to a VGG that can target multi-source (multi-domain) underwater image enhancement. The designed MDCNN feeds data from different domains into separate channels and implements parameters by linking VGGs, which improves the domain adaptation of the model. In addition, to optimize performance, multi-domain image perception loss functions, multilabel soft edge loss for specific image enhancement tasks, pixel-level loss, and external monitoring loss for edge sharpness preprocessing are proposed. These loss functions are set to effectively enhance the structural and textural similarity of underwater images. A series of qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate that our model is superior to the state-of-the-art Shallow UWnet in terms of UIQM, and the performance evaluation conducted on different datasets increased by 0.11 on average.

Importance: Approximately 65% of adults in the US consume sugar-sweetened beverages daily. Objective: To study the associations between intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, artificially sweetened beverages, and incidence of liver cancer and chronic liver disease mortality. Design, Setting, and Participants: A prospective cohort with 98 786 postmenopausal women aged 50 to 79 years enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative from 1993 to 1998 at 40 clinical centers in the US and were followed up to March 1, 2020. Exposures: Sugar-sweetened beverage intake was assessed based on a food frequency questionnaire administered at baseline and defined as the sum of regular soft drinks and fruit drinks (not including fruit juice); artificially sweetened beverage intake was measured at 3-year follow-up. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcomes were (1) liver cancer incidence, and (2) mortality due to chronic liver disease, defined as death from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, alcoholic liver diseases, and chronic hepatitis. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate multivariable hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for liver cancer incidence and for chronic liver disease mortality, adjusting for potential confounders including demographics and lifestyle factors. Results: During a median follow-up of 20.9 years, 207 women developed liver cancer and 148 died from chronic liver disease. At baseline, 6.8% of women consumed 1 or more sugar-sweetened beverage servings per day, and 13.1% consumed 1 or more artificially sweetened beverage servings per day at 3-year follow-up. Compared with intake of 3 or fewer servings of sugar-sweetened beverages per month, those who consumed 1 or more servings per day had a significantly higher risk of liver cancer (18.0 vs 10.3 per 100 000 person-years [P value for trend = .02]; adjusted HR, 1.85 [95% CI, 1.16-2.96]; P = .01) and chronic liver disease mortality (17.7 vs 7.1 per 100 000 person-years [P value for trend <.001]; adjusted HR, 1.68 [95% CI, 1.03-2.75]; P = .04). Compared with intake of 3 or fewer artificially sweetened beverages per month, individuals who consumed 1 or more artificially sweetened beverages per day did not have significantly increased incidence of liver cancer (11.8 vs 10.2 per 100 000 person-years [P value for trend = .70]; adjusted HR, 1.17 [95% CI, 0.70-1.94]; P = .55) or chronic liver disease mortality (7.1 vs 5.3 per 100 000 person-years [P value for trend = .32]; adjusted HR, 0.95 [95% CI, 0.49-1.84]; P = .88). Conclusions and Relevance: In postmenopausal women, compared with consuming 3 or fewer servings of sugar-sweetened beverages per month, those who consumed 1 or more sugar-sweetened beverages per day had a higher incidence of liver cancer and death from chronic liver disease. Future studies should confirm these findings and identify the biological pathways of these associations.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies on the association between coffee intake and cancer risk have yielded inconsistent results. To summarize and appraise the quality of the current evidence, we conducted an umbrella review of existing findings from meta-analyses of observational studies. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and the Cochrane database to obtain systematic reviews and meta-analyses of associations between coffee intake and cancer incidence. For each association, we estimated the summary effect size using the fixed- and random-effects model, the 95% confidence interval, and the 95% prediction interval. We also assessed heterogeneity, evidence of small-study effects, and excess significance bias. RESULTS: Twenty-eight individual meta-analyses including 36 summary associations for 26 cancer sites were retrieved for this umbrella review. A total of 17 meta-analyses were significant at P ≤ 0.05 in the random-effects model. For the highest versus lowest categories, 4 of 26 associations had a more stringent P value (P ≤ 10- 6). Associations for five cancers were significant in dose-response analyses. Most studies (69%) showed low heterogeneity (I2 ≤ 50%). Three and six associations had evidence of excessive significance bias and publication bias, respectively. Coffee intake was inversely related to the risk of liver cancer and endometrial cancer and was characterized by dose-response relationships. There were no substantial changes when we restricted analyses to meta-analysis of cohort studies. CONCLUSIONS: There is highly suggestive evidence for an inverse association between coffee intake and risk of liver and endometrial cancer. Further research is needed to provide more robust evidence for cancer at other sites.

BACKGROUND: The objective was to evaluate the effects of personal characteristics on the validation of self-reported type 2 diabetes among Chinese adults in urban Shanghai. METHODS: During 2015 through 2016, 4,322 participants were recruited in this validation study. We considered the criteria of diabetes verification to use the laboratory assays of fasting plasma glucose (FPG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), or self-reported use of diabetic medication. RESULTS: When taking diabetic medication or FPG ≥7.0 mmol/L was as identified diabetes, the measurements of sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and Kappa value of self-reported diabetes were 72.0%, 99.2%, 95.1%, 93.9%, and 0.78, respectively. If an additional HbA1c test was used for 708 subjects (aged <65 years), slightly lower values of sensitivity, NPV, and Kappa were observed. More potential diabetes cases were found compared to only using FPG. Subjects who were female, older, or had a family history of diabetes had sensitivity over 75% and excellent Kappa over 0.8, while the sensitivity and Kappa of opposite groups had poorer values. Specificity, PPV, and NPV were similar among groups with different demographic or disease characteristics. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes was 19.3% in the study (14.1% diagnosed diabetes, 5.2% undiagnosed diabetes). About 26.2% of subjects were pre-diabetic. Additional HbA1c test indicated an increased prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes and pre-diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: Findings support self-reported diabetes is sufficiently valid to be used in large-scale, population-based epidemiologic studies. Participants with different characteristics may have different indicators in terms of validation, such as age, gender, and family history of diabetes in first-degree relatives.

PURPOSE: The association between dietary protein intake and type 2 diabetes risk has been inconsistent in the previous epidemiological studies. We aimed to quantitatively assess whether dietary total, animal, and plant protein would be associated with type 2 diabetes risk. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify related articles by searching PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Wiley Online Library through 20th March 2018. Generalized least squares for trend estimation and restricted cubic spline regression model were applied in the dose-response analysis. RESULTS: Eight publications with ten prospective cohorts of 34,221 type 2 diabetes cases were included. After adjustment of potential confounders, a 5% of energy increment from dietary total and animal protein intake was related to a 9% (1.04, 1.13; I2 = 42.0%) and 12% (95% CI 1.08, 1.17; I2 = 14.0%) higher risk of type 2 diabetes respectively. However, for plant protein, a significant U-shaped curve was observed with the most risk reduction at intake of about 6% of energy intake from plant protein intake (Pnonlinearity = 0.001). The results were robust in sensitivity analysis and no publication bias was detected. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that the consumption of protein particularly animal protein may be associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Previous studies have suggested individual healthy lifestyle factors are related to lower risk of colorectal cancer. Their joint effects, however, have rarely been investigated. We aimed to assess the combined lifestyle impact on colorectal cancer risk and to estimate the population attributable risks of these lifestyle factors. Using data from the Shanghai Men's Health Study (2002-2013), we constructed healthy lifestyle index composing the following lifestyle factors: smoking, alcohol consumption, diet, waist-hip ratio and exercise participation. Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Over a median of 9.28 years' follow-up, 671 colorectal cancer cases occurred (400 colon cancer and 274 rectal cancer) among 59,503 men. Each increment of healthy lifestyle index was associated with a 17% lower risk of colorectal cancer (HR = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.78, 0.89), 10% of colon cancer (HR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.83, 0.99) and 27% of rectal cancer (HR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.66, 0.82). If all men in the cohort followed a lifestyle as defined by these five factors, 21% colorectal cancer cases would have been prevented (PAR = 21%, 95% CI: 4%, 36%). In conclusion, combined lifestyle factors are significantly related to lower risk of colorectal cancer and the effects are more pronounced on rectal cancer than on colon cancer.

BACKGROUND: Green tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages in Asia. While a possible protective role of green tea against various chronic diseases has been suggested in experimental studies, evidence from human studies remains controversial. METHODS: We conducted this study using data from Shanghai Men's Health Study (SMHS) and Shanghai Women's Health Study (SWHS), two population-based prospective cohorts of middle-aged and elderly Chinese adults in urban Shanghai, China. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality associated with green tea intake were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 8.3 and 14.2 years for men and women, respectively, 6517 (2741 men and 3776 women) deaths were documented. We found that green tea consumption was inversely associated with risk of all-cause mortality (HR 0.95; 95% CI, 0.90-1.01), particularly among never-smokers (HR 0.89; 95% CI, 0.82-0.96). The inverse association with cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality (HR 0.86; 95% CI, 0.77-0.97) was slightly stronger than that with all-cause mortality. No significant association was observed between green tea intake and cancer mortality (HR 1.01; 95% CI, 0.93-1.10). CONCLUSIONS: Green tea consumption may be inversely associated with risk of all-cause and CVD mortality in middle-aged and elderly Chinese adults, especially among never smokers.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have evaluated dietary antioxidant vitamins intake in relation to risk of mortality in Asia. METHODS: We examined the associations between total carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E from diet and risk of mortality from all causes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease in 134,358 participants (59,739 men and 74,619 women) from the Shanghai Men's Health Study and Shanghai Women's Health Study, two prospective cohort studies of middle-aged and elderly Chinese adults in urban Shanghai. Participants were followed up for a median period of 8.3 and 14.2 years for men and women, respectively. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence interval (CIs) were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS: During the 495,332 and 1,029,198 person-years of follow-up for men and women, respectively, there were 10,079 deaths (4170 men and 5909 women). For men, compared with the lowest quintiles, the multivariable-adjusted risk reductions in the highest categories were 17% (HR 0.83; 95% CI, 0.76-0.92) for dietary total carotene and 17% (HR 0.83; 95% CI, 0.75-0.91) for dietary vitamin C. Associations were weaker in women than in men, though they were still statistically significant (highest versus lowest quintiles of dietary total carotene, HR 0.87; 95% CI, 0.80-0.95; dietary vitamin C: HR 0.83; 95% CI, 0.77-0.91). Significant inverse associations were observed between dietary total carotene, vitamin C, and risk of cardiovascular disease mortality but not cancer mortality. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that total carotene and vitamin C intake from diet were inversely associated with deaths from all causes and cardiovascular disease in middle-aged or elderly people in China.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential influence of dietary Se intake on mortality among Chinese populations. DESIGN: We prospectively evaluated all-cause, CVD and cancer mortality risks associated with dietary Se intake in participants of the Shanghai Women's Health Study (SWHS) and the Shanghai Men's Health study (SMHS). Dietary Se intake was assessed by validated FFQ during in-person interviews. Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HR) and 95 % CI. SETTING: Urban city in China. SUBJECTS: Chinese adults (n 133 957). RESULTS: During an average follow-up of 13·90 years in the SWHS and 8·37 years in the SMHS, 5749 women and 4217 men died. The mean estimated dietary Se intake was 45·48 µg/d for women and 51·34 µg/d for men, respectively. Dietary Se intake was inversely associated with all-cause mortality and CVD mortality in both women and men, with respective HR for the highest compared with the lowest quintile being 0·79 (95 % CI 0·71, 0·88; P trend<0·0001) and 0·80 (95 % CI 0·66, 0·98; P trend=0·0268) for women, and 0·79 (95 % CI 0·70, 0·89; P trend=0·0001) and 0·66 (95 % CI 0·54, 0·82; P trend=0·0002) for men. No significant associations were observed for cancer mortality in both women and men. Results were similar in subgroup and sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS: Dietary Se intake was inversely associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in both sexes, but not cancer mortality.

Although in vitro and in vivo experiments have suggested that dietary fiber might have beneficial effects on health, results on the association between fiber intake and all-cause mortality in epidemiologic studies have been inconsistent. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies to quantitatively assess this association. Pertinent studies were identified by searching articles in PubMed and Web of Knowledge through May 2014 and reviewing the reference lists of the retrieved articles. Study-specific risk estimates were combined using random-effects models. Seventeen prospective studies (1997-2014) that had a total of 67,260 deaths and 982,411 cohort members were included. When comparing persons with dietary fiber intakes in the top tertile with persons whose intakes were in the bottom tertile, we found a statistically significant inverse association between fiber intake and all-cause mortality, with an overall relative risk of 0.84 (95% confidence interval: 0.80, 0.87; I(2) = 41.2%). There was a 10% reduction in risk for per each 10-g/day increase in fiber intake (relative risk = 0.90; 95% confidence interval: 0.86, 0.94; I(2) = 77.2%). The combined estimate was robust across subgroup and sensitivity analyses. No publication bias was detected. A higher dietary fiber intake was associated with a reduced risk of death. These findings suggest that fiber intake may offer a potential public health benefit in reducing all-cause mortality.

Findings on the association between television (TV) viewing and all-cause mortality in epidemiologic studies have been inconsistent. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis of data from prospective cohort studies to quantify this association. Relevant articles were identified by searching MEDLINE (PubMed; National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, Maryland) and EMBASE (Elsevier B.V., Amsterdam, the Netherlands) from inception to March 1, 2015, and reviewing the reference lists of retrieved articles. Study-specific results were pooled using a random-effects model. Of 2,578 citations identified by the search strategy, 10 cohort studies (61,494 deaths among 647,475 individuals) met the inclusion criteria. The summary relative risk of all-cause mortality for the highest category of TV viewing time versus the lowest was 1.33 (95% confidence interval: 1.20, 1.47), with heterogeneity among studies (I(2) = 66.7%, P(heterogeneity) = 0.001). In dose-response meta-analysis, TV viewing time was statistically significantly associated with all-cause mortality risk in a J-shaped fashion (P(nonlinearity) = 0.001). These results indicate that prolonged TV viewing time might increase the risk of all-cause mortality. Given the high prevalence of excessive TV viewing, public health recommendations or interventions aimed at decreasing the amount of TV viewing time in modern societies are warranted.
