RESUMO

Rechargeable hydrogen gas batteries, driven by hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions (HER/HOR), are emerging grid-scale energy storage technologies owing to their low cost and superb cycle life. However, compared with aqueous electrolytes, the HER/HOR activities in nonaqueous electrolytes have rarely been studied. Here, for the first time, we develop a nonaqueous proton electrolyte (NAPE) for a high-performance hydrogen gas-proton battery for all-climate energy storage applications. The advanced nonaqueous hydrogen gas-proton battery (NAHPB) assembled with a representative V2(PO4)3 cathode and H2 anode in a NAPE exhibits a high discharge capacity of 165 mAh g-1 at 1 C at room temperature. It also efficiently operates under all-climate conditions (from -30 to +70 °C) with an excellent electrochemical performance. Our findings offer a new direction for designing nonaqueous proton batteries in a wide temperature range.

Heat shock protein 47 (HSP47) serves as an endoplasmic reticulum residing collagen-specific chaperone and plays an important role in collagen biosynthesis and structural assembly. HSP47 is encoded by the SERPINH1 gene, which is located on chromosome 11q13.5, one of the most frequently amplified regions in human cancers. The expression of HSP47 is regulated by multiple cellular factors, including cytokines, transcription factors, microRNAs, and circular RNAs. HSP47 is frequently upregulated in a variety of cancers and plays an important role in tumor progression. HSP47 promotes tumor stemness, angiogenesis, growth, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and metastatic capacity. HSP47 also regulates the efficacy of tumor therapies, such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy. Inhibition of HSP47 expression has antitumor effects, suggesting that targeting HSP47 is a feasible strategy for cancer treatment. In this review, we highlight the function and expression of regulatory mechanisms of HSP47 in cancer progression and point out the potential development of therapeutic strategies in targeting HSP47 in the future.

Aluminum (Al) metal is an attractive anode material for next-generation rechargeable batteries, because of its low cost and high capacities. However, it brings some fundamental issues such as dendrites, low Coulombic efficiency (CE), and low utilization. Here, we propose a strategy for constructing an ultrathin aluminophilic interface layer (AIL) to regulate the Al nucleation and growth behaviors, which enables highly reversible and dendrite-free Al plating/stripping under high areal capacity. Metallic Al can maintain stable plating/stripping on the Pt-AIL@Ti for over 2000 h at 10 mAh cm-2 with an average CE of 99.9%. The Pt-AIL also enables reversible Al plating/stripping at a record high areal capacity of 50 mAh cm-2, which is 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than the previous studies. This work provides a valuable direction for further construction of high-performance rechargeable Al metal batteries.

Aqueous proton batteries (APBs) have emerged as one of the most promising batteries for large-scale energy storage technology. However, they usually show an undesirable electrochemical performance. Herein, we demonstrate a novel aqueous catalytic hydrogen gas powered organic proton (HOP) battery, which is driven by hydrogen evolution/oxidation redox reactions via commercial nanocatalysts on the anode and coordination/decoordination reactions of C═O with H+ on the cathode. The HOP battery shows an excellent rate capacity of 190.1 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 and 71.4 mAh g-1 at 100 A g-1. It also delivers a capacity of 96.6 mAh g-1 after 100000 cycles and operates at temperatures down to -70 °C. Moreover, the HOP battery is fabricated in a large-scale pouch cell with an extended capacity, exhibiting its potential for practical energy storage applications. This work provides new insights into the building of sustainable APBs, which will broaden the horizons of high-performance aqueous batteries.

RESUMO

Oral cancer is a common malignancy with a high mortality rate. Although surgery is the best treatment option for patients with cancer, this approach is ineffective for advanced metastases. Molecular agents are irreplaceable in preventing and treating distant metastases. This review aims to summarise the molecular agents used for the treatment of oral cancer in the last decade and describe their sources and curative effects. These agents are classified into phenols, isothiocyanates, anthraquinones, statins, flavonoids, terpenoids, and steroids. The mechanisms of action of these agents include regulating the expression of cell signalling pathways and related proteases to affect the proliferation, autophagy, migration, apoptosis, and other biological aspects of oral cancer cells. This paper may serve as a reference for subsequent studies on the treatment of oral cancer.

The renaissance of long-lasting nickel-hydrogen gas (Ni-H2) battery by developing efficient, robust, and affordable hydrogen anode to replace Pt is particularly attractive for large-scale energy storage applications. Here, we demonstrate an extremely facile corrosion induced fabrication approach to achieve a self-supporting hydrogen evolution/oxidation reaction (HER/HOR) bifunctional nanosheet array electrode for Ni-H2 battery. The electrode is constituted by ultrafine Ru nanoparticles on Ni(OH)2 nanosheets grown on nickel foam. Experimental and theoretical calculation results reveal that the electrode with optimized geometric and electronic structures ensures the efficient and robust catalytic hydrogen activities. The fabricated Ni-H2 battery using the Ru-Ni(OH)2/NF anode with an industrial scale areal capacity of 16 mAh cm-2 demonstrates a high energy density, good rate capability and excellent durability without capacity decay over 1800 h. This study casts light on the development of low manufacturing cost and high performance bifunctional hydrogen catalytic electrodes for future hydrogen energy applications.

Aqueous Zn batteries are emerging as promising energy storage devices. However, severe dendrite growth and side reactions of Zn anodes restrict their further development. Herein, we develop a nucleophilic interfacial layer (NIL) on Zn to achieve a highly stable Zn anode for rechargeable Zn batteries. The NIL in a composition of zinc acetate acetamide is homogeneous, compact, and Zn2+-conductive, rendering dendrite-free Zn deposition, which is observed by in situ optical microscopy. Benefiting from the advantages of NIL, the Zn||Zn symmetric cells show a low overpotential of 0.12 V at a high current density of 40 mA/cm2, enhanced Coulombic efficiency up to 99.9%, and extended lifespan over 2600 cycles. The Zn||Ti asymmetric cells exhibit a high areal capacity of 5 mAh/cm2. Moreover, the NIL functionalized Zn anode enables stable cycling of both anode-free Zn||Cl2 cells and zinc-ion capacitors, providing opportunities for the development of high-performance energy storage devices.

The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising strategy to alleviate excessive CO2 levels in the atmosphere and produce value-added feedstocks and fuels. However, the synthesis of high-efficiency and robust electrocatalysts remains a great challenge. This work reports the green preparation of surface-oxygen-rich carbon-nanorod-supported bismuth nanoparticles (SOR Bi@C NPs) for an efficient CO2RR toward formate. The resultant SOR Bi@C NPs catalyst displays a Faradaic efficiency of more than 91% for formate generation over a wide potential range of 440 mV. Ex situ XPS and XANES and in situ Raman spectroscopy demonstrate that the Bi-O/Bi (110) structure in the pristine SOR Bi@C NPs can remain stable during the CO2RR process. DFT calculations reveal that the Bi-O/Bi (110) structure can facilitate the formation of the *OCHO intermediate. This work provides an approach to the development of high-efficiency Bi-based catalysts for the CO2RR and offers a unique insight into the exploration of advanced electrocatalysts.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZBs) show promises for large-scale energy storage. However, the zinc utilization rate (ZUR) is generally low due to side reactions in the aqueous electrolyte caused by the active water molecules. Here, we design a novel solvation structure in the electrolyte by introduction of sulfolane (SL). Theoretical calculations, molecular dynamics simulations and experimental tests show that SL remodels the primary solvation shell of Zn2+ , which significantly reduces the side reactions of Zn anode and achieves high ZUR under large capacities. Specifically, the symmetric and asymmetric cells could achieve a maximum of ∼96 % ZUR at an areal capacity of 24 mAh cm-2 . In a ZUR of ∼67 %, the developed Zn-V2 O5 full cell can be stably cycled for 500 cycles with an energy density of 180 Wh kg-1 and Zn-AC capacitor is stable for 5000 cycles. This electrolyte structural engineering strategy provides new insight into achieving high ZUR of Zn anodes for high performance AZBs.

A facile and efficient approach to the synthesis of 1,2,5-trisubstituted imidazoles is developed via a multicomponent reaction under metal-free catalysis. Under Brønsted acid catalysis, the desired products can be obtained from readily available vinyl azides, aromatic aldehydes, and aromatic amines without generating any toxic waste. The convenient operations and high functional group compatibility indicate that this approach offers an attractive alternative method for the synthesis of imidazole derivatives.

BACKGROUND: Noncatalytic region of tyrosine kinase 1 (NCK1) plays a key role in extracellular matrix degradation, which is required for the metastasis of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). However, the role NCK1 plays in the metastatic progression of TNBC is unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: Based on online databases, NCK1 was found to be highly expressed in TNBC as compared to normal breast-like subjects, which was also confirmed using TNBC cells and a tissue microarray. NCK1 expression gradually decreased with increased tumor stage. High NCK1 expression displayed a poor prognosis in lymph node-positive metastatic TNBC patients, but not in lymph node-negative patients. Using transwell assays and immunoblotting, we confirmed that NCK1 overexpression promoted, while NCK1 downregulation inhibited migration capabilities, as well as the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP2/9), uridylyl phosphate adenosine, and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 in TNBC cells. Mechanistically, NCK1 upregulation mediated the activation of MMP2/9 through ERK1/2 activity. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) was positively correlated with NCK1. STAT3 could directly bind to the promoter region of NCK1 to promote its expression and was accompanied by the elevation of MMP2/9 and ERK1/2 signaling, which were partially abolished by the knockdown of NCK1 in TNBC cells. CONCLUSIONS: NCK1 may serve as a diagnostic and prognostic marker of metastatic TNBC. STAT3 upregulation promoted the expression of NCK1, which subsequently induced the migration and activity of MMPs in a ERK1/2 signaling-dependent manner in TNBC cells. NCK1 is a promising target for improving TNBC migration.

An aqueous electrolytic MnO2-Zn battery with eye-catching Mn2+/MnO2 cathode chemistry has been attracting immense interest for next-generation energy storage devices due to its irreplaceable advantages. However, the limited MnO2 conductivity restricts its long service life at high areal capacities. Here, we report a high-performance electrolytic MnO2-Zn battery via a bromine redox mediator, to enhance its electrochemical performance. The MnO2/Br2-Zn battery displays a high discharge voltage of 1.98 V with a capacity of ∼5.8 mAh cm-2. It also shows an excellent rate performance of 20 C with a long-term stability of over 600 cycles. Furthermore, the scaled-up MnO2/Br2-Zn battery with a capacity of ∼950 mAh exhibits a stable 100 cycles with a practical cell energy density of ∼32.4 Wh kg-1 and an attractively low energy cost of below 15 US$ kWh-1. The design approach can be generalized to other electrodes and battery systems, thus opening up new possibilities for large-scale energy storage.

Electrode materials are key components in typical batteries, where the electrodes are generally fabricated onto current collectors in solid forms and are isolated by a separator. However, the preparation of the electrodes increases the fabrication complexity, which speeds down their large-scale production. Here, series of static electrode-less MnO2 -metal batteries are presented that are facilely fabricated by using carbon current collectors and electrolytes. The MnO2 -metal batteries are operated in dual-deposition/stripping chemistries of Mn2+ /MnO2 on the cathode and M/Mx+ on the anode. The MnO2 -Cd/Zn/Cu batteries exhibit remarkable rates up to 200 C, excellent reversibility of 15 000 cycles, and realistic gravimetric and volumetric energy densities of 93.7 Wh kg-1 and 134 Wh L-1 , respectively. Impressively, the MnO2 -Cd battery can achieve over 160 000 cycles in the high current pulse test, showing promises in the applications of electrical vehicle's start-stop and large-scale energy storage.

A series of gem-chlorosulfurization products bearing difluoromethyl substituents were synthesized in high to excellent yields directly from p-toluenesulfonyl difluorodiazoethane (TsCF2CHN2), disulfides and PhICl2 without any catalysts or additives. The mild reaction conditions and high functional group compatibility indicated the utility and sustainability of the method. In addition, the gem-chlorosulfurization products could be efficiently converted to sulfur-containing and aryl substituted difluoromethyl derivatives by a feasible multi-component operation.

Soil salinity is a widespread stress in semi-arid forests worldwide, but how to manage nitrogen (N) nutrition to improve plant saline tolerance remains unclear. Here, the cuttings of a widely distributed poplar from central Asia, Populus russikki Jabl., were exposed to either normal or low nitrogen (LN) concentrations for two weeks in semi-controlled greenhouse, and then they were added with moderate salt solution or not for another two weeks to evaluate their physiological, biochemical, metabolites and transcriptomic profile changes. LN-pretreating alleviated the toxicity caused by the subsequent salt stress in the poplar plants, demonstrated by a significant reduction in the influx of Na+ and Cl- and improvement of the K+/Na+ ratio. The other salt-stressed traits were also ameliarated, indicated by the variations of chlorophyll content, PSII photochemical activity and lipid peroxidation. Stress alleviation resulted from two different processes. First, LN pretreatment caused a significant increase of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC), allowed for an increased production of osmolytes and a higher potential fueling ion transport under subsequent salt condition, along with increased transcript levels of the cation/H+ ATPase. Second, LN pretreatment enhanced the transcript levels of stress signaling components and phytohormones pathway as well as antioxidant enzyme activities. The results indicate that early restrictions of N supply could enhance posterior survival under saline stress in poplar plants, which is important for plantation programs and restoration activities in semi-arid areas.

PURPOSE: Alternative splicing (AS) events were reportedly associated with the development of multiple cancers. The study was designed to provide a comprehensive analysis of AS events and explore their potential prognostic value in uveal melanoma (UM). METHODS: The prognostic AS events, identified based on the data of 80 UM patients obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas, were further screened and analyzed for construction of prognostic signatures by using LASSO regression and multivariate Cox model. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to evaluate the prognostic value. The AS events-related functional pathways were explored by gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA). The difference between two subgroups in terms of treatment options was investigated. The regulatory network between prognostic AS events and splicing factors (SFs) was then constructed. RESULTS: A total of 1014 AS events were identified as prognostic AS events. Five prognostic AS events were involved in the construction of prognostic signatures, including AKAP2/87175/AP, RGMA/32575/ES, DNASE1L1/90581/ES, BIN1/55198/ES and ERCC2/50430/AT. UM patients were then divided into two subgroups. Prognostic AS signatures had an excellent performance in predicting the survival of UM patients, with an area under curve (AUC) of 0.962. GSEA results suggested several splicing-associated mechanisms, including cellular metabolic process and apoptosis. Low-risk subgroup could be more sensitive to drugs. A higher expression of immune checkpoint genes was observed in high-risk group than in low-risk group. SFs-AS regulatory network also revealed significant association between AS events and SFs. CONCLUSIONS: Aberrant AS events in UM patients might serve as prognostic predictors.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between the behavioral performance and the expressions of substance P (SP) and neurokinin-1 receptor (NK-1R) in the posterior horn of the L5-S2 spinal cord in rats with chronic prostatitis (CP). METHODS: A CP model was made in 30 adult male SD rats by intraperitoneal injection of 0.5 ml dyphtheria pertussis tetanus (DPT) vaccine and mixed solution of 1 ml prostatein extract and complete adjuvant in a 1∶1 ratio, and another 10 rats were injected with the same volume of normal saline as controls. At 45 (n = 10), 60 (n = 10) and 90 days (n = 10) after modeling, the behavioral changes of the rats were observed by open-field and sucrose consumption tests, the prostatic indexes and levels of serum TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-2 and IL-10 were obtained, and the expressions of SP and NK1-R in the L5-S2 spinal cord were determined by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Compared with the controls, the CP model rats showed obviously decreased horizontal and vertical movement scores and sucrose consumption, particularly in the 90 d group (P < 0.05), significantly reduced prostatic indexes in the 45 d, 60 d and 90 d groups (all P < 0.05), even lower in the 90 d than in the 45 d and 60 d groups (P < 0.05). Edema and lymphocytes were increased in the prostatic tissue with the prolonged time of modeling. The levels of serum TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-2 and IL-10 were markedly elevated in all the CP rats as compared with those in the controls (P < 0.05), and so were the expressions of SP and NK-1R in the L5-S2 spinal cord (P < 0.05), even more significantly in the 90 d than in the 45 d and 60 d groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Rats with chronic prostatitis are characterized by behavioral manifestation of depression, increased levels of serum TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-2 and IL-10, and a time-dependent upregulation of the expressions of SP and NK-1R in the posterior horn of the L5-S2 spinal cord, which suggests a correlation between the behavioral performance and the expressions of SP and NK-1R in the L5-S2 spinal cord of the rats.

Members of Prx family function as an important players in host defense against oxidative stress, and modulate immune responses. In the current study, two complete Prx sequences were isolated from bivalve Anodonta woodiana and respectively named AwPrx4a and AwPrx4b. Regulative characterizations of AwPrx4a and AwPrx4b derived from perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), perfluoroocanoic acid (PFOA), lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and polyinosinic:polycytidylic (Poly I:C) challenge in hepatopancreas, gill and hemocytes were measured by quantitative real-time PCR, respectively. The full-length cDNA of AwPrx4a had an open reading frame ORF of 588 bp encoding 196 amino acids. Two highly conserved Prxs signature motifs were observed in deduced amino acid sequence, one was FYPLDFTFACPTEI, and the other was GEVCPA. Complete cDNA sequence of AwPrx4b was comprised of a 5' untranslated region (UTR) of 120 nucleotides, a 426 bp ORF which was encoded 142 amino acids, and a long 3'-UTR of 412 nucleotides. Expressions of AwPrx4a and AwPrx4b showed a significant up-regulation pattern in groups at lower concentration treatment of PFOS and PFOA, a biphasic profile in groups with a higher concentration treatment. Compared with that of control group, expressions of AwPrx4a and AwPrx4b were significantly induced by LPS and Poly I:C treatment in the hepatopancreas, gill and hemocytes. These results indicate up-regulations of AwPrx4a and AwPrx4b expression are associated with eliminating oxidative stress derived from PFOS and PFOA administration as well as enhancing immune defense against LPS and Poly I:C challenge.

PURPOSE: To design a rigid contact lens (CL) to be used in combination with a wide-angle viewing system and analyze its protection for corneal epithelial during vitreous-retinal surgery. METHODS: A thin and lightweight rigid CL was designed and constructed. The impact of the CL on the visualized fundus range was evaluated using a concrete eye model. Patients with severe proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) were randomized to either the CL group, corneal protective agent (CPA) group, or balanced salt solution (BSS) group. All patients underwent phacoemulsification and a standard 23-gauge three-port vitrectomy. Surgery time and corneal fluorescein staining score (FSS) postoperatively were mainly measured. RESULTS: In the eye model, a larger area of fundus was visualized with the use of our CL under 128 D or 60 D Resight lens. The mean surgery time was 51.36±8.06 min, 50.89±8.26 min, and 55.46±9.14 in CL, CPA, and BSS group, respectively (F=2.325, P=0.105). In eight eyes in the BSS group, corneal epithelial layer was peeled off because the dryness of the cornea could not maintain a clear fundus image. The FSS in BSS group was markedly higher than that of CL and BSS group 1 day (P<0.001), 3 days (P<0.001), and 7 days (P=0.002) postoperatively. There was no statistical significance of the FSS between CL and CPA group at each follow-up endpoint. CONCLUSIONS: The CL that we designed can slightly enlarge the visible fundus range and efficiently protect corneal epithelium during vitrectomy for patients with PDR.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expressions of substance P (SP) and neurokinin-1 receptor (NK-1R) in the posterior horn of the L5-S2 spinal cord in the rat model of chronic nonbacterial prostatitis (CNP) at different time points of modeling. METHODS: Forty adult male SD rats were randomly divided into four groups of equal number, control, 45 d model, 60 d model, and 90 d model, and proteins were obtained from the prostatic tissue of another 30 rats. The CNP model was made by intraperitoneal injection of 0.5 ml DPT vaccineand intradermal injection of mixed solution of 1 ml prostatein extract and complete adjuvant at a 1∶1 ratio, while the control rats were injected with the same volume of normal saline. At 45, 60, and 90 days after modeling, we measured the paw withdrawal threshold (PWT) of the rats, determined the levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-2, and IL-10 in the prostate tissue by ELISA, observed the histomorphological changes in the prostate by transmission electron and light microscopy, and detected the expressions of SP and NK1-R in the L5-S2 spinal cord by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The model rats showed significantly increased sensitivity to pain, with remarkably lowered PWT at 45, 60, and 90 days after modeling. The levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-2, and IL-10 in the prostate tissue were markedly elevated in the CNP models as compared with those in the controls (all P<0.05), most significantly at 90 days (all P<0.05). Immunohistochemistry showed that the expressions of SP and NK-1R were remarkably higher in the CNP model groups than in the control (all P<0.05), the highest at 90 days. Light microscopy revealed no inflammatory cell infiltration in the prostate tissue of the control rats, and obvious edema and increased lymphocytes were observed with the prolonged time of modeling.Transmission electron microscopy showed inflammatory changes in the prostate tissue of the model rats and that peritubular interstitial edema was most obvious at 90 days, with widened intervals between peritubular cells and the epithelial base and increased numbers of fibroblasts and collagen fibrils. CONCLUSIONS: The synthesis of SP and the level of NK-1R were increased in the posterior horn of the L5-S2 spinal cord in the rat model of CNP.
