RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We describe a case of acute pancreatitis (AP) and hypofibrinogenemia associated with drug treatment with the aim to increase awareness of uncommon yet possibly life-threatening adverse reactions of tigecycline and furosemide. CASE SUMMARY: A 75-year-old Chinese male was hospitalized for acute non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction and acute heart failure. The patient underwent successful percutaneous coronary intervention and MitraClip. Furosemide was taken since admission. Because Acinetobacter baumannii was detected in the blood and sputum, the patient was treated with tigecycline from the 14th day of hospitalization. Abnormal pancreatitis parameters were observed, and pancreatic CT was undertaken 12 days after the treatment of tigecycline. AP was diagnosed and symptomatic treatment was carried out, but no significant improvement was observed. On the 33rd day of hospitalization, the patient presented with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding and decreased levels of fibrinogen and platelets. After withdrawal of tigecycline, the coagulation and pancreatitis parameters improved significantly. However, the pancreatitis parameters increased again after stopping somatostatin. Therefore, somatostatin was given again for 1 day, and furosemide was discontinued. After that, the pancreatitis parameters returned to baseline levels after a slight recovery. CONCLUSION: Clinicians should pay attention to clinical signs, symptoms, and pancreatic enzymes during tigecycline or furosemide treatment, especially when used in combination. In addition, regular monitoring of fibrinogen and platelet count during tigecycline treatment is suggested.

RESUMO

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an important endogenous gas signal molecule in living system, which participates in a variety of physiological processes. Very recent evidence has accumulated to show that endogenous H2S is closely associated with various cancers and can be regarded as a biomarker of cancer. Herein, we have constructed a new near-infrared fluorescent probe (DCP-H2S) based on isophorone-xanthene dye for sensing hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The probe shows remarkable NIR turn-on signal at 770 nm with a large Stokes shift of 200 nm, together with high sensitivity (15-fold) and rapid detection ability for H2S (4 min). The probe also possesses excellent selectivity for H2S over various other analytes including biothiols containing sulfhydryl (-SH). Moreover, DCP-H2S has been successfully applied to visualize endogenous and exogenous H2S in living cells (293T, Caco-2 and CT-26 cells). In particular, the excellent ability of DCP-H2S to distinguish normal mice and tumor mice is shown, and it is expected to be a powerful tool for detection of H2S in cancer diagnosis.

RESUMO

Cancer is one of the biggest public enemies of global health with its high morbidity and mortality. Achieving early diagnosis is the most effective means of reducing cancer harm, which requires the use of powerful tools to accurately identify biomarkers. However, most of the reported fluorescent probes for cancer diagnosis can only detect one substance, which makes it difficult to meet the requirements of high accuracy. Here, a fluorescent nanoprobe (CPQ@ZIF-90) for sequential detection of ATP and ONOO- is constructed by encapsulating the ONOO- sensitive unit CPQ within ZIF-90. CPQ@ZIF-90 first reacts with ATP to release CPQ, which greatly enhances the fluorescence at 740 nm. Then, the released CPQ continues to react with ONOO- and is oxidatively cleaved by ONOO- to form a coumarin product with a small π-conjugated structure, which significantly enhances the fluorescence at 510 nm. CPQ@ZIF-90 shows high sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of ATP and then ONOO-. Moreover, CPQ@ZIF-90 has good biocompatibility and successfully realizes the sequential detection of a dual-channel fluorescence change of ATP and ONOO- in living cells and zebrafish and accurately distinguishes normal cells from cancer cells. CPQ@ZIF-90 is expected to be a potential tool for accurate cancer diagnosis through sequential detection of two cancer markers.

RESUMO

As a common gaseous signaling molecule, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays a vital role in physiology and pathology. The development of fluorescent probes for detecting H2S has attracted widespread attention. However, most of the reported fluorescent probes with nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD) as the recognition group have been widely used to simultaneously detect biothiols and H2S, instead of specifically detecting H2S. Herein, a novel NBD-based near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe named CX-N for the detection of H2S is synthesized. The selectivity of CX-N for H2S is significantly higher than that for biothiols and other potential interferences. After reacting with H2S, CX-N shows a significant increase in NIR fluorescence (75-fold), large Stokes shift (155 nm) and fast response (4 min). And the possible response mechanism of CX-N to H2S is given and confirmed by HPLC and HRMS. Based on the low cytotoxicity of CX-N, it has been used for H2S imaging in live cells and zebrafish. More importantly, CX-N has also been successfully applied for the real-time imaging of H2S in inflammatory and tumor mice based on its NIR emission, which provides a reliable platform for the specific recognition of H2S in complex biological systems.

RESUMO

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: New hypoglycaemic agents consist of dipeptidyl peptidase four inhibitors (DPP4is), glucagon-like peptide one receptor agonists (GLP1RAs) and sodium-glucose cotransporter two inhibitors (SGLT2is). We aimed to define the association between each category of these new hypoglycaemic drugs and various cardiovascular diseases. METHODS: Large randomized trials comparing DPP4is, GLP1RAs or SGLT2is with placebo were included. Outcomes of interest were 95 kinds of cardiovascular diseases. Meta-analysis was conducted to generate pooled risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Twenty-one large randomized trials were included in this meta-analysis. Compared with placebo, SGLT2is were associated with the lower risks of hypertension (RR 0.67, 95% CI 0.49-0.93), atrial fibrillation (RR 0.78, 95% CI 0.67-0.91), bradycardia (RR 0.60, 95% CI 0.40-0.89) and heart failure (RR 0.74, 95% CI 0.68-0.80); GLP1RAs were associated with the lower risk of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (RR 0.73, 95% CI 0.56-0.97) and with the higher risk of deep vein thrombosis (RR 2.12, 95% CI 1.32-3.4), while DPP4is were associated with the lower risk of peripheral ischaemia (RR 0.57, 95% CI 0.37-0.89). WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis revealed that SGLT2is were associated with the lower risks of hypertension, atrial fibrillation, bradycardia and heart failure; GLP1RAs were associated with the lower risk of peripheral arterial occlusive disease and with the higher risk of deep vein thrombosis, while DPP4is were associated with the lower risk of peripheral ischaemia. These findings propose that each category of these new hypoglycaemic agents should be avoided or preferred in patients at high risks of specific cardiovascular diseases.

RESUMO

Treatment options for unresectable local recurrence or metastatic well-differentiated/dedifferentiated liposarcoma (WDLS/DDLS) remain limited. Different liposarcoma subtypes have varying clinical features and sensitivities to treatment regimens. The multitarget tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), such as pazopanib and regorafenib, have been approved for use in nonadipocytic soft tissue sarcomas (STS). Anlotinib, another TKI, has been approved in China for treating metastatic STS that has progressed after the use of anthracycline-based regimens. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the role of anlotinib in the treatment of local recurrence or metastatic WDLS/DDLS. From August 2018 to June 2020, 17 patients with unresectable local recurrence or metastatic WDLS/DDLS treated with anlotinib in our center were included. The follow-up cutoff time was set as 20 October 2020. Baseline and observation indicators were collected and analyzed. Estimated median progression-free survival (PFS) was 27.9 weeks, the PFS rate at 24 weeks was 58.8%, overall survival (OS) was 56.6 weeks, the disease control rate was 64.7% and no complete response or partial response was detected. Grade 3/4 adverse events occurred in four cases and could be managed. Anlotinib is a potential treatment option for unresectable local recurrence or metastatic WDLS/DDLS.

RESUMO

AIM: To investigate the abnormalities of the upper gastrointestinal tract in liver transplant (LT) recipients, especially the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection and the incidence of chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG), and to explore the efficacy and safety of H pylori eradication treatment. METHODS: Endoscopic screening was performed prospectively on LT recipients who received regular follow-up in our center. A group of healthy subjects with same age and sex was selected as a control group at a ratio of 1:3 with propensity score matching. All H pylori-positive recipients received Bismuth-containing quadruple therapy (esomeprazole 20 mg + clarithromycin 500 mg + amoxicillin 1 g + bismuth 220 mg, all of the medicines were applied twice daily, for 14 days). RESULT: The prevalence of H pylori infection was significantly lower in LT group than control group [12/102 (11.8%) vs 98/306 (32.0%), P < .001], whereas the prevalence of CAG was similar between the two groups [48/102 (47.1%) vs 138/306 (45.1%), P = .731]. Meanwhile, the incidence of reflux esophagitis [18/102 (17.6%) vs 31/306 (10.1%), P = .043] and bile regurgitation [19/102 (18.6%) vs 30/306 (9.8%), P = .018] were higher in LT group. No correlation between the incidence of upper gastroduodenal abnormalities and postoperative time after liver transplantation was found. The success rate of H pylori eradication therapy was 100% (10/10). The blood concentration of immunosuppressants was 1.7-3.6 times above baseline values during H pylori eradication therapy; however, no severe adverse effects were observed during the proceed with dose adjustments of the immunosuppressants. CONCLUSION: Although the prevalence of H pylori infection was lower in LT recipients than in control subjects, the prevalence of CAG was like that of the general population. H pylori eradication therapy was safe and effective after liver transplantation in our preliminary study.

RESUMO

Metformin is a promising drug for cancer prevention and treatment, especially in the diabetic population. We aimed to test whether 14-3-3zeta affects the anticancer effect of metformin on colorectal carcinoma (CRC). In this study, we confirmed that higher 14-3-3zeta expression was found in CRC tissues than in pericarcinoma tissues, and in CRC tissue of patients with diabetes than in those without diabetes. A knockdown of 14-3-3zeta inhibited CRC proliferation and promoted apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. Then, we created stable cell lines with under-expressed 14-3-3zeta from SW480 and HCT15 cells after infection by a lentiviral vector carrying short hairpin RNA targeting 14-3-3zeta (named LV-sh14-3-3zeta). Of note, metformin induced apoptosis and retarded tumor growth in the CRCs with overexpressed 14-3-3zeta, whereas this action was attenuated when 14-3-3zeta was knocked down. Moreover, either metformin or downregulation of 14-3-3zeta noticeably activated AMP-dependent protein kinase (AMPK) signaling, whereas the effect of metformin was attenuated when the 14-3-3zeta expression was decreased. Taken together, our results suggest that 14-3-3zeta may be associated with carcinogenesis and poor prognosis of CRCs associated with diabetes, and metformin may reverse the AMPK inhibition caused by 14-3-3zeta in CRCs in the background of diabetes. Our study should lead to a better understanding of the anticancer activity of metformin and points to possible application of metformin to the treatment of cancers overexpressing 14-3-3zeta.

RESUMO

A colorimetric and turn-on fluorescent probe 1 bearing triphenylamine-thiophene and dicyanovinyl groups has been synthesized and used to detect cyanide anion via a nucleophilic addition reaction. Probe 1 exhibited prominent selectivity and sensitivity towards CN- in aqueous media, even in the presence of other anions such as S2-, HS-, SO32-, S2O32-, S2O82-, I-, Br-, Cl-, F-, NO2-, N3-, SO42-, SCN-, HCO3-, CO32- and AcO-. Moreover, a low detection limit (LOD, 51 nM) was observed. In addition, good cell membrane permeability and low cytotoxicity to HeLa cells were also observed, suggesting its promising potential in bio-imaging.

RESUMO

The combustion reaction of raw coals in the air was analyzed withThermal Gravimetric Analyzer 6300 and FTIR (Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy). The raw coals came from three different sources which were SL lignite, SH bitumite and TT anthracite. The chars were prepared by fixed bed pyrolysis equipment in different reaction temperature. The overlapping peaks were fitted into some sub-peaks by Gaussian function. The aromatic index (R), aromatic structure fused index (D) and organic maturity index (C) were calculated through sub-peaks areas. It showed that three kinds of ignition temperature of SL, SH and TT were 299.3, 408.2 and 441.0 ℃ respectively. The peak temperature of maximum weight loss rate were 348.6, 480.5 and 507.0 ℃ respectively. With the increase of coal rank, both ignition temperature and peak temperature of maximum weight loss rate increased in some degree. The result showed that coal structure was very complex. Vibration absorption peaks of hydroxyl (OH), aliphatic hydrocarbons (CH2,CH3), aromatic (CC), oxygen-containing functional group(CO, CO) and other major functional groups could be observed in the infrared spectral curves of all samples. With the increase of pyrolysis temperature, infrared vibration absorption peaks of aliphatic hydrocarbons (CH2, CH3) were gradually decreased. the stretching vibration peak of CO which was at 1 700 cm-1 almost disappeared after coked at 550 ℃. SL samples' absorption peak area infrared curve of oxygen functional groups at 1 000~1 800 cm-1 was more complex. With the increase of coking temperature they changed more significantly compared with others. While peak position and peak intensity for aromatic CC absorption peaks of SH and TT did not change apparently when temperature was changing. Variation trends of main functional groups among three ranks of coals were obviously different with changes of R, D and C values.

RESUMO

Advances in micro- and nanofabrication technologies have enabled the development of novel micro- and nanomechanical resonators which have attracted significant attention due to their fascinating physical properties and growing potential applications. In this review, we have presented a brief overview of the resonance behavior and frequency tuning principles by varying either the mass or the stiffness of resonators. The progress in micro- and nanomechanical resonators using the tuning electrode, tuning fork, and suspended channel structures and made of graphene have been reviewed. We have also highlighted some major influencing factors such as large-amplitude effect, surface effect and fluid effect on the performances of resonators. More specifically, we have addressed the effects of axial stress/strain, residual surface stress and adsorption-induced surface stress on the sensing and detection applications and discussed the current challenges. We have significantly focused on the active and passive frequency tuning methods and techniques for micro- and nanomechanical resonator applications. On one hand, we have comprehensively evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of each strategy, including active methods such as electrothermal, electrostatic, piezoelectrical, dielectric, magnetomotive, photothermal, mode-coupling as well as tension-based tuning mechanisms, and passive techniques such as post-fabrication and post-packaging tuning processes. On the other hand, the tuning capability and challenges to integrate reliable and customizable frequency tuning methods have been addressed. We have additionally concluded with a discussion of important future directions for further tunable micro- and nanomechanical resonators.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the correlation between glycemic control of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and brachial-ankle pulse velocity (baPWV). METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Beijing, China. Every subject underwent physical examinations, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), blood lipid and baPWV measurements and completed a standardized questionnaire. T2DM patients were divided into well controlled and poorly controlled groups according to HbA1c levels. The correlation between glycemic control of T2DM patients and baPWV was analyzed. RESULTS: In this study, 1 341 subjects were recruited, including 733 T2DM patients and 608 non-diabetes subjects. Compared with non-diabetes subjects, abnormal baPWV (baPWV≥1 700 cm/s) rate for T2DM patients was higher (40.8% vs. 26.8%, P<0.001). With HbA1c<6.5% or <7.0% as the aim of glycemic control in T2DM patients, the abnormal baPWV rates for non-diabetes subjects, well controlled and poorly controlled T2DM patients were significantly different (non-diabetes vs. HbA1c<6.5% T2DM vs. HbA1c≥6.5% T2DM: 26.8% vs. 32.8% vs. 42.6%, P<0.001; non-diabetes vs. HbA1c<7.0% T2DM vs. HbA1c≥7.0% T2DM: 26.8% vs. 36.1% vs. 43.4%, P<0.001). After being adjusted for gender, age, smoking status, diabetes mellitus family history, T2DM duration, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), waist hip ratio (WHR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), total triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), the Logistic regression models suggested that glycemic control status of T2DM patients was associated with abnormal baPWV. Compared with non-diabetes subjects, the ORs for abnormal baPWV in HbA1c<6.5% T2DM patients and HbA1c≥6.5% T2DM patients were 0.927(95%CI 0.560-1.537) and 1.826 (95%CI 1.287-2.591). Compared with non-diabetes subjects, the ORs for abnormal baPWV in HbA1c<7.0% T2DM patients and HbA1c≥7.0% T2DM patients were 1.210 (95%CI 0.808-1.811) and 1.898 (95%CI 1.313-2.745). CONCLUSION: The glycemic control status of T2DM patients from communities is significantly associated with baPWV. Poor glycemic control is a risk factor for abnormal baPWV. Keeping HbA1c under control might lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases in T2DM patients.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of the blood levels of MIR-21 and PTEN as novel biomarkers for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). We initially detected MIR-21 and PTEN using real-time RT-PCR from 90 blood samples and then compared their results with expression in cancer tissues from 10 OSCC patients. Finally, we examined the relationship between these markers and clinical parameters. Blood MIR-21 and PTEN had significant diagnostic value for OSCC and, to an extent, correlated with the expression level of tumour MIR-21 and PTEN. In addition, they were associated with differentiation and nodal status. Thus circulating MIR-21 and PTEN might represent new complementary tumour markers for OSCC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction (MI) is a serious complication of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). Previous studies have identified genetic variants on chromosome 9p21 and 6p24 that are associated with CAD, but further studies need to be conducted to investigate whether these genetic variants are associated with the pathogenesis of MI. We therefore performed this study to assess the association between the risk of MI and SNP rs10757274 on chromosome 9p21 and SNP rs6903956 on chromosome 6p24, and to explore the gene-environment interactions in a Chinese population. METHODS: A hospital-based case-control study, consisting of 502 MI patients and 308 controls, was conducted in a Chinese population. Demographic, behavioral information and clinical characteristics were collected, and genotyping of the two SNPs was performed using single base primer extension genotyping technology. The unconditional logistic regression (ULR) method was adopted to assess the association of the two SNPs with MI risk. Both generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction (GMDR) and ULR methods were applied to explore the effect of gene-environment interactions on the risk of MI. RESULTS: After adjusting for covariates, it was observed that SNP rs10757274 on chromosome 9p21 was significantly associated with MI. Compared with subjects carrying the AA genotype, subjects carrying the GA or GG genotypes had a higher MI risk (ORa = 1.52, 95% CI:1.06-2.19, pa = 0.0227; ORa = 2.40, 95% CI:1.51-3.81, pa = 0.0002, respectively). Furthermore, a two-factor gene-environment interaction model of CDKN2A/B (rs10757274) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was identified to be the best model by GMDR (p = 0.0107), with a maximum prediction accuracy of 59.18%, and a maximum Cross-validation Consistency of 10/10. By using the ULR method, additive interaction analysis found that the combined effect resulted in T2DM-positive subjects with genotype GG/GA having an MI risk 4.38 times that of T2DM-negative subjects with genotype AA (ORadd = 4.38, 95% CI:2.56-7.47, padd < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: These results show that gene polymorphism of CDKN2A/B (rs10757274) is associated with MI risk in a Chinese population. Furthermore, T2DM is likely to have an interaction with CDKN2A/B (rs10757274) that contributes to the risk of MI.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of decompression as the primary treatment of odontogenic cystic lesions of the jaw involving factors that affect relative shrinking speed and bone regeneration. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 32 patients with odontogenic cystic lesions of the jaw underwent decompression with customized thermoplastic resin stents. Clinical examinations and pre- and postdecompression panoramic radiographs were analyzed. RESULTS: The mean relative speed of shrinkage of radicular cysts (RCs; 3.37 cm(2)/month) was faster than those of keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs; 2.87 cm(2)/month) and unicystic ameloblastomas (UABs; 2.71 cm(2)/month). The relative shrinking size increased linearly in a time-dependent manner for KCOTs (r = 0.849, P < .001), RCs (r = 0.681, P = .319), and UABs (r = 0.146, P = .730); a similar relation was detected between the primary radiolucent area of cystic lesions before decompression and relative shrinking speed after decompression in KCOTs (r = 0.481, P = .032), RCs (r = 0.260, P = .673), and UABs (r = 0.370, P = .366), but patient age did not affect the relative speed of shrinkage (P > .05). Furthermore, the increase in bone density was more significant in RCs than in KCOTs (P = .026) and UABs (P = .012) after decompression. CONCLUSION: Decompression was effective in reducing odontogenic cystic lesions of the jaw and increasing bone density. For aggressive lesions, secondary definitive surgery was necessary.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Primary cardiac angiosarcoma (PCA) is a rare and fatal disease with a poor prognosis. Whether the survival of PCA patients can be prolonged with additional treatment following complete surgical excision is controversial. PATIENT CONCERNS: In this case study, a 52-year-old male complained of chest tightness and pain for 7 days before admission into the hospital. Subsequently, he revisited the hospital because of dizziness and headache. DIAGNOSES: Initially, the patient was diagnosed with PCA in the right atrium by thoracic computed tomography (CT). Palliative resection identified brain, lung, and liver metastases. INTERVENTION: The patient accepted multimodal combination therapy, including first-line chemotherapy and then second-line anlotinib concurrent with brain radiotherapy and immunotherapy. OUTCOME: Although anlotinib combined with brain radiotherapy controlled the growth of intracranial lesions, progression-free survival (PFS) was only 5 months, and the overall survival (OS) was only 12 months. LESSON: The treatment for metastatic PCA needs an in-depth exploration.

RESUMO

In this study, a Ti3C2 MXene@g-C3N4 composite powder (TM-CN) was prepared by the ultrasonic self-assembly method and then loaded onto a carbon nanofiber membrane by the self-assembly properties of MXene for the treatment of organic pollutants in wastewater. The characterization of the TM-CN and the C-TM-CN was conducted via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) to ascertain the successful modification. The organic dye degradation experiments demonstrated that introducing an appropriate amount of Ti3C2 MXene resulted in the complete degradation of RhB within 60 min, three times the photocatalytic efficiency of a pure g-C3N4. The C-TM-CN exhibited the stable and outstanding photocatalytic degradation of the RhB solution over a wide range of pH values, indicating the characteristics of the photodegradation of organic pollutants in a wide range of aqueous environments. Furthermore, the results of the cyclic degradation experiments demonstrated that the C-TM-CN composite film maintained a degradation efficiency of over 85% after five cycles, thereby confirming a notable improvement in its cyclic stability. Consequently, the C-TM-CN composite film exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance and is readily recyclable, making it an auspicious eco-friendly material in water environment remediation.

RESUMO

In this work, we demonstrate the immunocapture and on-line fluorescence immunoassay of protein and virus based on porous polymer monoliths (PPM) in microfluidic devices. Poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)] monoliths were successfully synthesized in the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic channels by in situ UV-initiated free radical polymerization. After surface modification, PPM provides a high-surface area and specific affinity 3D substrate for immunoassays. Combining with well controlled microfluidic devices, the direct immunoassay of IgG and sandwich immunoassay of inactivated H1N1 influenza virus using 5 µL sample has been accomplished, with detection limits of 4 ng mL(-1) and less than 10 pg mL(-1), respectively. The enhanced detection sensitivity is due to both high surface area of PPM and flow-through design. The detection time was obviously decreased mainly due to the shortened diffusion distance and improved convective mass transfer inside the monolith, which accelerates the reaction kinetics between antigen and antibody. This work provides a novel microfluidic immunoassay platform with high efficiency thereby enabling fast and sensitive immunoassay.

RESUMO

Solution-gated graphene field effect transistors (SGGT) were integrated in microfluidic systems. The transfer characteristics of a SGGT with an Ag/AgCl gate electrode shifted horizontally with the change of the ionic concentration of KCl solution in the microchannel and the relationship can be fitted with the Nernst equation, which was attributed to the change of the potential drop at the Ag/AgCl electrode. Therefore the gate electrode is one important factor for the ion sensitive property of the SGGT. Then SGGTs were used as flow velocity sensors, which were based on measuring the streaming potentials in microfluidic channels. A linear relationship between the shift of the transfer curve of the SGGT and the flow velocity was obtained, indicating that the SGGT is a promising transducer for measuring flow velocity in a microchip. Since the streaming potential is influenced by the three physical quantities, including the flow velocity, the ionic strength of the fluid and the zeta potential of the substrate, the device can be used for sensing any one of the three quantities when the other two were known. It is noteworthy that SGGTs have been used for various types of chemical and biological sensors. Array of the devices integrated in multichannel microchips are expected to find many important applications in the lab-on-a-chip systems in the future.
