RESUMO
Superconductivity involving finite-momentum pairing1 can lead to spatial-gap and pair-density modulations, as well as Bogoliubov Fermi states within the superconducting gap. However, the experimental realization of their intertwined relations has been challenging. Here we detect chiral kagome superconductivity modulations with residual Fermi arcs in KV3Sb5 and CsV3Sb5 using normal and Josephson scanning tunnelling microscopy down to 30 millikelvin with a resolved electronic energy difference at the microelectronvolt level. We observe a U-shaped superconducting gap with flat residual in-gap states. This gap shows chiral 2a × 2a spatial modulations with magnetic-field-tunable chirality, which align with the chiral 2a × 2a pair-density modulations observed through Josephson tunnelling. These findings demonstrate a chiral pair density wave (PDW) that breaks time-reversal symmetry. Quasiparticle interference imaging of the in-gap zero-energy states reveals segmented arcs, with high-temperature data linking them to parts of the reconstructed vanadium d-orbital states within the charge order. The detected residual Fermi arcs can be explained by the partial suppression of these d-orbital states through an interorbital 2a × 2a PDW and thus serve as candidate Bogoliubov Fermi states. In addition, we differentiate the observed PDW order from impurity-induced gap modulations. Our observations not only uncover a chiral PDW order with orbital selectivity but also show the fundamental space-momentum correspondence inherent in finite-momentum-paired superconductivity.
RESUMO
The transition metal kagome lattice materials host frustrated, correlated and topological quantum states of matter1-9. Recently, a new family of vanadium-based kagome metals, AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb or Cs), with topological band structures has been discovered10,11. These layered compounds are nonmagnetic and undergo charge density wave transitions before developing superconductivity at low temperatures11-19. Here we report the observation of unconventional superconductivity and a pair density wave (PDW) in CsV3Sb5 using scanning tunnelling microscope/spectroscopy and Josephson scanning tunnelling spectroscopy. We find that CsV3Sb5 exhibits a V-shaped pairing gap Δ ~ 0.5 meV and is a strong-coupling superconductor (2Δ/kBTc ~ 5) that coexists with 4a0 unidirectional and 2a0 × 2a0 charge order. Remarkably, we discover a 3Q PDW accompanied by bidirectional 4a0/3 spatial modulations of the superconducting gap, coherence peak and gap depth in the tunnelling conductance. We term this novel quantum state a roton PDW associated with an underlying vortex-antivortex lattice that can account for the observed conductance modulations. Probing the electronic states in the vortex halo in an applied magnetic field, in strong field that suppresses superconductivity and in zero field above Tc, reveals that the PDW is a primary state responsible for an emergent pseudogap and intertwined electronic order. Our findings show striking analogies and distinctions to the phenomenology of high-Tc cuprate superconductors, and provide groundwork for understanding the microscopic origin of correlated electronic states and superconductivity in vanadium-based kagome metals.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Peritoneal fibrosis is the prevailing complication induced by prolonged exposure to high glucose in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. METHODS: To elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying this process, we conducted an integrated analysis of the transcriptome and chromatin accessibility profiles of human peritoneal mesothelial cells (HMrSV5) during high-glucose treatment. RESULTS: Our study identified 2775 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to high glucose-triggered pathological changes, including 1164 upregulated and 1611 downregulated genes. Genome-wide DEGs and network analysis revealed enrichment in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), inflammatory response, hypoxia, and TGF-beta pathways. The enriched genes included VEGFA, HIF-1α, TGF-ß1, EGF, TWIST2, and SNAI2. Using ATAC-seq, we identified 942 hyper (higher ATAC-seq signal in high glucose-treated HMrSV5 cells than in control cells) and 714 hypo (lower ATAC-seq signal in high glucose-treated HMrSV5 cells versus control cells) peaks with differential accessibility in high glucose-treated HMrSV5 cells versus controls. These differentially accessible regions were positively correlated (R = 0.934) with the nearest DEGs. These genes were associated with 566 up- and 398 downregulated genes, including SNAI2, TGF-ß1, HIF-1α, FGF2, VEGFA, and VEGFC, which are involved in critical pathways identified by transcriptome analysis. Integrated ATAC-seq and RNA-seq analysis also revealed key transcription factors (TFs), such as HIF-1α, ARNTL, ELF1, SMAD3 and XBP1. Importantly, we demonstrated that HIF-1α is involved in the regulation of several key genes associated with EMT and the TGF-beta pathway. Notably, we predicted and experimentally validated that HIF-1α can exacerbate the expression of TGF-ß1 in a high glucose-dependent manner, revealing a novel role of HIF-1α in high glucose-induced pathological changes in human peritoneal mesothelial cells (HPMCs). CONCLUSIONS: In summary, our study provides a comprehensive view of the role of transcriptome deregulation and chromosome accessibility alterations in high glucose-induced pathological fibrotic changes in HPMCs. This analysis identified hub genes, signaling pathways, and key transcription factors involved in peritoneal fibrosis and highlighted the novel glucose-dependent regulation of TGF-ß1 by HIF-1α. This integrated approach has offered a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis of peritoneal fibrosis and has indicated potential therapeutic targets for intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Endovascular therapy (EVT) is the most successful treatment for patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to large vessel occlusion (LVO) in the anterior circulation. However, futile recanalization (FR) seriously affects the prognosis of these patients. The aim of this study was to investigate predictors of FR after EVT in patients with AIS. METHOD: Patients diagnosed with AIS due to anterior circulation LVO and receiving EVT between June 2020 and October 2022 were prospectively enrolled. FR after EVT was defined as a poor 90-day prognosis (modified Rankin Scale [mRS] score ≥ 3) despite achieving successful reperfusion (modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction [mTICI] classification of 2b-3). All included patients were categorized into control group (mRS score < 3) and FR group (mRS score ≥ 3). Demographic characteristics, comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, smoking, etc.), stroke-specific data (NIHSS score, ASPECT score and site of occlusion), procedure data (treatment type [direct thrombectomy vs. bridging thrombectomy], degree of vascular recanalization [mTICI], procedure duration time and onset-recanalization time), laboratory indicators (lymphocytes count, neutrophils count, monocytes count, C-reactive protein, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio [NLR], monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio [MHR], lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio [LMR], lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio [LCR], lymphocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio[LHR], total cholesterol and triglycerides.) were compared between the two groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to explore independent predictors of FR after EVT. RESULTS: A total of 196 patients were included in this study, among which 57 patients were included in the control group and 139 patients were included in the FR group. Age, proportion of patients with hypertension and diabetes mellitus, median NIHSS score, CRP level, procedure duration time, neutrophil count and NLR were higher in the FR group than in the control group. Lymphocyte count, LMR, and LCR were lower in the FR group than in the control group. There were no significant differences in platelet count, monocytes count, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, gender, smoking, atrial fibrillation, percentage of occluded sites, onset-recanalization time, ASPECT score and type of treatment between the two groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that NLR was independently associated with FR after EVT (OR = 1.37, 95%CI = 1.005-1.86, P = 0.046). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that high NLR was associated with a risk of FR in patients with AIS due to anterior circulation LVO. These findings may help clinicians determine which patients with AIS are at higher risk of FR after EVT. Our study can provide a theoretical basis for interventions in the aforementioned population.

The rapid increase in the number of vehicles has led to increasing traffic congestion, traffic accidents, and motor vehicle crime rates. The management of various parking lots has also become increasingly challenging. Vehicle-type recognition technology can reduce the workload of humans in vehicle management operations. Therefore, the application of image technology for vehicle-type recognition is of great significance for integrated traffic management. In this paper, an improved faster region with convolutional neural network features (Faster R-CNN) model was proposed for vehicle-type recognition. Firstly, the output features of different convolution layers were combined to improve the recognition accuracy. Then, the average precision (AP) of the recognition model was improved through the contextual features of the original image and the object bounding box optimization strategy. Finally, the comparison experiment used the vehicle image dataset of three vehicle types, including cars, sports utility vehicles (SUVs), and vans. The experimental results show that the improved recognition model can effectively identify vehicle types in the images. The AP of the three vehicle types is 83.2%, 79.2%, and 78.4%, respectively, and the mean average precision (mAP) is 1.7% higher than that of the traditional Faster R-CNN model.
RESUMO
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of frequent complications of sepsis with high mortality. Mitochondria is the center of energy metabolism participating in the pathogenesis of sepsis-associated AKI, and SIRT1/PGC1-α signaling pathway plays a crucial role in the modulation of energy metabolism. Erythropoietin (EPO) exerts protective functions on chronic kidney disease. We aimed to assess the effects of EPO on cell damage and energy metabolism in a cell model of septic AKI. Renal tubular epithelial cells HK-2 were treated with LPS and human recombinant erythropoietin (rhEPO). Cell viability was detected by CCK-8 and mitochondrial membrane potential was determined using JC-1 fluorescent probe. Then the content of ATP, ADP and NADPH, as well as lactic acid, were measured for the assessment of energy metabolism. Oxidative stress was evaluated by detecting the levels of ROS, MDA, SOD and GSH. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1ß, were measured with ELISA. Moreover, qRT-PCR and western blot were performed to detect mRNA and protein expressions. shSIRT1 was used to knockdown SIRT1, while EX527 and SR-18292 were applied to inhibit SIRT1 and PGC1-α, respectively, to investigate the regulatory mechanism of rhEPO on inflammatory injury and energy metabolism. In LPS-exposed HK-2 cells, rhEPO attenuated cell damage, inflammation and abnormal energy metabolism, as indicated by the elevated cell viability, the inhibited oxidative stress, cell apoptosis and inflammation, as well as the increased mitochondrial membrane potential and energy metabolism. However, these protective effects induced by rhEPO were reversed after SIRT1 or PGC1-α inhibition. EPO activated SIRT1/PGC1-α pathway to alleviate LPS-induced abnormal energy metabolism and cell damage in HK-2 cells. Our study suggested that rhEPO played a renoprotective role through SIRT1/PGC1-α pathway, which supported its therapeutic potential in septic AKI.

Cyclic dinucleotides (CDNs) are a promising class of immune agonists that trigger the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) to activate both innate and acquired immunity. However, the efficacy of CDNs is limited by drug delivery barriers. Therefore, we developed a combined immunotherapy strategy based on injectable reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive hydrogels, which sustainably release 5,6-dimethylxanthenone-4-acetic acid (DMXAA) as known as a STING agonist and indocyanine green (ICG) by utilizing a high level of ROS in the tumor microenvironment (TME). The STING agonist combined with photothermal therapy (PTT) can improve the biological efficacy of DMXAA, transform the immunosuppressive TME into an immunogenic and tumoricidal microenvironment, and completely kill tumor cells. In addition, this bioreactive gel can effectively leverage local ROS to facilitate the release of immunotherapy drugs, thereby enhancing the efficacy of combination therapy, improving the TME, inhibiting tumor growth, inducing memory immunity, and protecting against tumor rechallenge.

PURPOSE: To investigate the predictive role of pre-thrombolytic high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) on the safety and efficacy of intravenous thrombolysis in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). METHODS: Patients with AIS who underwent intravenous thrombolysis with recombinant plasminogen activator (rtPA) or urokinase without endovascular therapy from June 2019 to June 2022 were retrospectively analysed. All patients were grouped into two groups (high or low hs-CRP group) according to the median value of hs-CRP before intravenous thrombolysis. The baseline NIHSS, NIHSS changes before and after thrombolysis (ΔNIHSS), the rate of good thrombolysis response (NIHSS decreased ≥ 2 points from baseline), the rate of any intracranial hemorrhage, age, sex, hypertension, diabetes, uric acid and platelet count were compared between the two groups. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify possible prognostic factors for a good thrombolysis response. RESULTS: A total of 212 patients were included in the analysis, with a mean age of 66.3 ± 12.5 years. In total, 145 patients received rtPA, and 67 patients received urokinase. Patients were divided into a high hs-CRP group (> 1.60 mg/L) and a low hs-CRP group (≤ 1.60 mg/L) according to the median hs-CRP level (1.60 mg/L). The ΔNIHSS of the high hs-CRP group was significantly smaller than that of the low hs-CRP group (0 [-1 ~ 0] vs. -1 [-2 ~ 0], P < 0.05). The good rate of thrombolysis response in the high hs-CRP group was significantly lower than that in the low hs-CRP group (21.9% vs. 36.5%, P < 0.05). Similar results were shown in the rtPA subgroup between the high and low hs-CRP groups but not in the urokinase subgroup. Logistic regression analysis showed that hs-CRP > 1.60 mg/L was negatively correlated with a good thrombolysis response rate (OR = 0.496, 95% CI = 0.266-0.927, P = 0.028). CONCLUSION: hs-CRP > 1.6 mg/L may serve as a poor prognosis predictive factor for patients with AIS receiving intravenous thrombolysis. However, due to the small sample size of this study, further studies are needed to verify our results.

A differential evolution particle swarm optimization (DEPSO) is presented for the design of a high-phase-sensitivity surface plasmon resonance (SPR) gas sensor. The gas sensor is based on a bilayer metal film with a hybrid structure of blue phosphorene (BlueP)/transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and MXene. Initially, a Ag-BlueP/TMDCs-Ag-MXene heterostructure is designed, and its performance is compared with that of the conventional layer-by-layer method and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The results indicate that optimizing the thickness of the layers in the gas sensor promotes phase sensitivity. Specifically, the phase sensitivity of the DEPSO is significantly higher than that of the PSO and the conventional method, while maintaining a lower reflectivity. The maximum phase sensitivity achieved is 1.866 × 106 deg/RIU with three layers of BlueP/WS2 and a monolayer of MXene. The distribution of the electric field is also illustrated, demonstrating that the optimized configuration allows for better detection of various gases. Due to its highly sensitive characteristics, the proposed design method based on the DEPSO can be applied to SPR gas sensors for environmental monitoring.
RESUMO
Clinoptilolite based zeolite-geopolymer foams (abbreviated as CFs) were prepared from natural clinoptilolite and calcined clinoptilolite, using H2O2 solution as pore former through a straightforward process. Natural clinoptilolite and CFs are characterized by analytical techniques including optical microscope, XRF, FTIR, XRD, BET, MIP and SEM. The obtained CFs possesses micropores of zeolite and meso/macropores of geopolymer matrix. The porosities range from 66.7 to 69.5%. Clinoptilolite (partially dissolved) and impurity minerals (montmorillonite, illite and albite) contribute to the formation of geopolymer. CFs shows a good static sorption performance for toxic heavy metals at pH = 5 and sorption time of 24 h. Results show that the adsorption amount of CFs for Cr3+, Pb2+, Ni2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ in the 50 mg/L working solutions are 6.21 mg/g, 6.11-6.13 mg/g, 5.92-6.07 mg/g, 5.53-5.93 mg/g and 5.44-5.79 mg/g, respectively. In addition, CFs could reach a high removal rate (Cr removal rate >80% and Cd > 60%) for different heavy metals after three cycles. The elimination order of toxic metals is Cr3+ > Pb2+ > Ni2+ > Cu2+ > Cd2+. The sequence is in accordance with Hard-Soft-Acid-Base principle, it is also related to the speciation and the ionic radii of the hydrated metal ions. This research provides a feasible approach for preparation of promising foams sorbent based on natural zeolite for wastewater management.

Because of the extensive application of electromagnetic technology, its health impact on humans has attracted widespread attention. Due to the lack of a model organism with a stable response to electromagnetic waves, the research conclusions on the biological effects of electromagnetic waves have been vague. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of irradiation by pulsed 9.4 GHz high-power microwaves with a peak power density of 2126 W/cm2 using Caenorhabditis elegans. The development, movement, egg production, ROS, and lifespan of C. elegans were detected at different times after irradiation with different repetitive frequencies of 10, 20, and 50 Hz for 30 min. The results indicated that no obvious changes in basic life indices were induced compared with the sham radiation group, but the survival rate of positive control was significantly decreased compared with other groups, which is of interest for microwave protection research based on C. elegans and provides data for updating safety standards with respect to pulsed high-peak power microwave. © 2021 Bioelectromagnetics Society.

The yellowing process is the crucial step to form the characteristic sensory and chemical properties of yellow tea. To investigate the chemical changes and the associations with sensory traits during yellowing, yellow teas with different yellowing times (0-13 h) were prepared for sensory evaluation and chemical analysis. The intensities of umami and green-tea aroma were reduced whereas sweet taste, mellow taste and sweet aroma were increased under long-term yellowing treatment. A total of 230 chemical constituents were determined, among which 25 non-volatiles and 42 volatiles were the key chemical contributors to sensory traits based on orthogonal partial least squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA), multiple factor analysis (MFA) and multidimensional alignment (MDA) analysis. The decrease in catechins, flavonol glycosides and caffeine and the increase in certain amino acids contributed to the elevated sweet taste and mellow taste. The sweet, woody and herbal odorants and the fermented and fatty odorants were the key contributors to the characteristic sensory feature of yellow tea with sweet aroma and over-oxidation aroma, including 7 ketones, 5 alcohols, 1 aldehyde, 5 acids, 4 esters, 5 hydrocarbons, 1 phenolic compound and 1 sulfocompound. This study reveals the sensory trait-related chemical changes in the yellowing process of tea, which provides a theoretical basis for the optimization of the yellowing process and quality control of yellow tea.

Combined therapy provides a more effective method in the treatment of tumors and becomes a research hotspot. To improve treatment outcomes and reduce serious side effects, hydrogel-based local delivery was developed herein to form a drug depot in suit to eliminate tumors. Indocyanine green and imiquimod were coencapsulated in the novel temperature-sensitive chitosan hydrogel. After intratumoral injection of the hydrogel, indocyanine green that accumulated in the tumor area could induce thermal ablation of primary tumors under laser irradiation. In the presence of imiquimod, the immune effects increased the probability of complete ablation of primary tumors and inhibition of metastases. Combined with cyclophosphamide, the enhanced immunological responses would further inhibit tumors and prolong the survival time. In a word, this work offered an excellent local delivery platform that enabled a remarkable combined antitumor strategy and achieved synergistic therapeutic effects.

A novel method for the synthesis of N-difluoromethyl-2-pyridones was described. This protocol enables the synthesis of N-difluoromethyl-2-pyridones from readily available pyridines using mild reaction conditions that are compatible with a wide range of functional groups. The preliminary mechanistic study revealed that N-difluoromethylpyridinium salts were the key intermediates to complete this conversion.

The irrational NH3emission routinely poses a significant threat to human health and environmental protection even at low dose. In addition, high miniaturization and low power-consumption has been the critical requirements of Internet of Things. To meet these demands, it is greatly pressing to develop a novel gas sensor with the capability to detect trace NH3without external heating or light-irradiation elements. In this work, the organic conducting conjugated polymer PEDOT:PSS was combined with inorganic nitrogen-doped transition metal carbides and nitrides (N-MXene Ti3C2Tx) for chemiresistive NH3sensing at room temperature (20oC). By means of the organic-inorganicn-pheterojunctions via the synergistic effect, the results show that the composite film sensor with the optimal mass ratio of 1:0.5 between N-MXene and PEDOT:PSS components delivered favorable NH3sensing performance than individual N-MXene or PEDOT:PSS counterparts in terms of higher response and quicker response/recovery speeds under 20oC@36%RH air. Besides, decent repeatability, stability and selectivity were demonstrated. The incorporated N atoms served as excellent electron donors to promote the electron-transfer reactions and augment the sorption sites. Simultaneously, partial oxidation of MXene brought about some TiO2nanoparticles which acted as spacers to widen the interlayer spacing and probably suppress the MXene restacking during the film deposition, thus favoring the gas diffusion/penetration within the sensing layer and then a quick reaction kinetic. The modulation of consequent build-in field within the heterojunctions was responsible for the reversible NH3sensing. In addition, pre-adsorbed water molecules facilitated to establish a swift adsorption/desorption balance. The proposed strategy expanded the application range of MXene based composite materials and enrich the current sensing mechanisms of NH3gas sensors.
RESUMO
Zoonoses are increasingly recognized as an important burden on global public health in the 21st century. High-resolution, long-term field studies are critical for assessing both the baseline and future risk scenarios in a world of rapid changes. We have used a three-decade-long field study on hantavirus, a rodent-borne zoonotic pathogen distributed worldwide, coupled with epidemiological data from an endemic area of China, and show that the shift in the ecological dynamics of Hantaan virus was closely linked to environmental fluctuations at the human-wildlife interface. We reveal that environmental forcing, especially rainfall and resource availability, exert important cascading effects on intra-annual variability in the wildlife reservoir dynamics, leading to epidemics that shift between stable and chaotic regimes. Our models demonstrate that bimodal seasonal epidemics result from a powerful seasonality in transmission, generated from interlocking cycles of agricultural phenology and rodent behavior driven by the rainy seasons.

Ganoderic acids (GAs) are a type of highly oxygenated lanostane-type triterpenoids that are responsible for the pharmacological activities of Ganoderma lucidum. They have been investigated for their biological activities, including antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor, anti-HIV-1, antioxidation, and cholesterol reduction functions. Inducer supplementation is viewed as a promising technology for the production of GAs. This study found that supplementation with sodium acetate (4 mM) significantly increased the GAs content of fruiting bodies by 28.63% compared to the control. In order to explore the mechanism of ganoderic acid accumulation, the transcriptional responses of key GAs biosynthetic genes, including the acetyl coenzyme A synthase gene, and the expression levels of genes involved in calcineurin signaling and acetyl-CoA content have been analyzed. The results showed that the expression of three key GAs biosynthetic genes (hmgs, fps, and sqs) were significantly up-regulated. Analysis indicated that the acetate ion increased the expression of genes related to acetic acid assimilation and increased GAs biosynthesis, thereby resulting in the accumulation of GAs. Further investigation of the expression levels of genes involved in calcineurin signaling revealed that Na+ supplementation and the consequent exchange of Na+/Ca2+ induced GAs biosynthesis. Overall, this study indicates a feasible new approach of utilizing sodium acetate elicitation for the enhanced production of valuable GAs content in G. lucidum, and also provided the primary mechanism of GAs accumulation.

We investigate a new class of topological antiferromagnetic (AF) Chern insulators driven by electronic interactions in two-dimensional systems without inversion symmetry. Despite the absence of a net magnetization, AF Chern insulators (AFCI) possess a nonzero Chern number C and exhibit the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE). Their existence is guaranteed by the bifurcation of the boundary line of Weyl points between a quantum spin Hall insulator and a topologically trivial phase with the emergence of AF long-range order. As a concrete example, we study the phase structure of the honeycomb lattice Kane-Mele model as a function of the inversion-breaking ionic potential and the Hubbard interaction. We find an easy z axis C=1 AFCI phase and a spin-flop transition to a topologically trivial xy plane collinear antiferromagnet. We propose experimental realizations of the AFCI and QAHE in correlated electron materials and cold atom systems.
RESUMO
Malaria is an important vector-borne disease which is widespread in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide as well as in south China. Previous research has separately focused on the association between malaria incidence and meteorological variables or between malaria incidence and anti-malaria intervention measures in China, especially in Yunnan Province. Therefore, a typical county, Tengchong County, in Yunnan Province with high malaria incidence was selected as the study area to investigate the integrated influence of climate variance and anti-malaria intervention measures. Malaria incidence and meteorological variables were analyzed with a 2-month lag. The variables include average monthly temperature, minimum temperature, maximum temperature, cumulative precipitation, wind speed, maximum wind speed, relative humidity and minimum relative humidity. First, the principal component analysis was introduced to investigate the relationship between malaria incidence and meteorological variables; classification and regression trees were used to clarify contributions of key meteorological variables to malaria incidence afterwards. Second, based on existing anti-malaria intervention measures and above results, the integrated impact of climate variance and anti-malaria interventions on interannual trends of malaria incidence was analyzed. High malaria incidence occurred under one of the two meteorological conditions: 1) high minimum temperature combined with high minimum relative humidity or both precipitation and minimum relative humidity above middle level; 2) middle minimum temperature combined with both precipitation and minimum relative humidity below middle levels. Moreover, the steep interannual decline of malaria incidence in Tengchong was determined by slight climate variance and persistent anti-malaria intervention measures during malaria epidemics, predominantly by the latter. These findings will provide evidence data for developing malaria surveillance strategies in China.

The spatial spread of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 and its long-term persistence in Asia have resulted in avian influenza panzootics and enormous economic losses in the poultry sector. However, an understanding of the regional long-distance transmission and seasonal patterns of the virus is still lacking. In this study, we present a phylogeographic approach to reconstruct the viral migration network. We show that within each wild fowl migratory flyway, the timing of H5N1 outbreaks and viral migrations are closely associated, but little viral transmission was observed between the flyways. The bird migration network is shown to better reflect the observed viral gene sequence data than other networks and contributes to seasonal H5N1 epidemics in local regions and its large-scale transmission along flyways. These findings have potentially far-reaching consequences, improving our understanding of how bird migration drives the periodic reemergence of H5N1 in Asia.
