RESUMO

Emerging organophosphate flame retardants (eOPFRs) have attracted attention in recent times and are expected to gain extensive usage in the coming years. However, they may have adverse effects on organisms. Due to their novel nature, there are few relevant articles dealing with toxicological studies of the above eOPFRs, especially their information on the perturbation of cellular metabolism, which is, thus far, marginally understood. Our research initially assessed the cytotoxicity of eOPFRs, which include compounds like cresyl diphenyl phosphate (CDP), resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) (RDP), triallyl phosphate (TAP), and pentaerythritol phosphate alcohol (PEPA). This evaluation was conducted using the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay. Subsequently, we utilized a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS)-based metabolomic approach to investigate the metabolic disruptions induced by these four eOPFRs in A549 cells. The MTT results showed that, at high concentrations of 1 mM, their cytotoxicity was ranked as CDP > TAP > RDP > PEPA. In addition, metabolic studies at low concentrations of 10 µM showed that the metabolic interference of CDP, TAP, and PEPA focuses on oxidative stress, amino acid metabolism, and energy metabolism, while RDP mainly affects energy metabolism-galactose metabolism and gluconeogenesis. Therefore, from the perspective of cytotoxicity and metabolic analysis, RDP may be a more promising alternative. Our experiments provide important insights into the possible metabolic effects of potential toxic substances and complement the evidence on the human health risks of eOPFRs.

The aim of this paper is to increase understanding of the relative importance of the input of geographic and local environmental factors on richness and composition of epigaeic steppe beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae and Tenebrionidae) along a geographic (longitudinal/precipitation) gradient in the Inner Mongolia grassland. Specifically, we evaluate the associations of environmental variables representing climate and environmental heterogeneity with beetle assemblages. Beetles were sampled using pitfall traps at 25 sites scattered across the full geographic extent of the study biome in 2011-2012. We used variance partitioning techniques and multi-model selection based on the Akaike information criterion to assess the relative importance of the spatial and environmental variables on beetle assemblages. Species richness and abundance showed unimodal patterns along the geographic gradient. Together with space, climate variables associated with precipitation, water-energy balance and harshness of climate had strong explanatory power in richness pattern. Abundance pattern showed strongest association with variation in temperature and environmental heterogeneity. Climatic factors associated with temperature and precipitation variables and the interaction between climate with space were able to explain a substantial amount of variation in community structure. In addition, the turnover of species increased significantly as geographic distances increased. We confirmed that spatial and local environmental factors worked together to shape epigaeic beetle communities along the geographic gradient in the Inner Mongolia grassland. Moreover, the climate features, especially precipitation, water-energy balance and temperature, and the interaction between climate with space and environmental heterogeneity appeared to play important roles on controlling richness and abundance, and species compositions of epigaeic beetles.

This paper studies the taxonomy of the genus Osorius Guérin-Méneville, 1829 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae, Osoriinae) and reports 10 new species and three new records from China: Osorius depressicapitatus sp. nov. (Yunnan and Xizang), O. guizhouensis sp. nov. (Guizhou), O. huangi sp. nov. (Hunan), O. limatidepressus sp. nov. (Sichuan), O. micromidas sp. nov. (Yunnan), O. minutoserratus sp. nov. (Yunnan), O. rectomarginatus sp. nov. (Yunnan, Guangxi, Hainan, Fujian, Guangdong and Xizang), O. striolatus sp. nov. (Hunan and Guangdong), O. trichinosis sp. nov. (Guizhou and Zhejiang), O. tuberocapitatus sp. nov. (Hubei), O. aspericeps Fauvel, 1905, new record of China (Yunnan, Sichuan, Xizang and Zhejiang), O. frontalis Fauvel, 1905, new record of China (Sichuan), and O. punctulatus Motschulsky, 1857, new record of China (Yunnan and Fujian). The number of the Chinese Osorius species is thus increased to 21 in total. The paper provides line drawings for 21 species and redescriptions for the species recorded for the first time in China. A key to Chinese species is also included.
