RESUMO

Biochar (BC) is an organic compound formed by the pyrolysis of organic wastes. Application of BCs as soil amendments has many benefits including carbon sequestration, enhanced soil fertility and sustainable agriculture production. In the present study, we acidified the different BCs prepared from rice straw, rice husk, wheat straw, cotton stalk, poultry manure, sugarcane press mud and vegetable waste; following which, we applied them in a series of pot experiments. Comparisons were made between acidified and non- acidified BCs for their effects on seed germination, soil properties (EC, pH) nutrient contents (P, K, Na) and organic matter. The treatments comprised of a control, and all above-described BCs (acidified as well as non-acidified) applied to soil at the rate of 1% (w/w). The maize crop was selected as a test crop. The results showed that acidified poultry manure BC significantly improved germination percentage, shoot length, and biomass of maize seedlings as compared to other BCs and their respective control plants. However, acidified BCs caused a significant decrease in nutrient contents (P, K, Na) of soil, maize seedlings, and the soil organic matter contents as compared to non- acidified BCs. But when compared with control treatments, all BCs treatments (acidified and non-acidified) delivered higher levels of nutrients and organic matter contents. It was concluded that none of the BCs (acidified and non-acidified) had caused negative effect on soil conditions and growth of maize. In addition, the acidification of BC prior to its application to alkaline soils might had altered soil chemistry and delivered better maize growth. Moving forward, more research is needed to understand the long-term effects of modified BCs on nutrient dynamics in different soils. In addition, the possible effects of BC application timings, application rates, particle size, and crop species have to be evaluated systemtically.

RESUMO

The main objective of this study was to assess the usefulness of the sweet cherry stones for the production of carbonaceous adsorbents by means of direct physical activation method, using conventional and microwave variant of heating. The adsorbents were characterized in terms of textural parameters, acidic-basic character of the surface, electrokinetic properties and their suitability for drinking water purification. Adsorption tests were carried out against three organic compounds - Triton X-100 (surfactant), bovine serum albumin (protein) and methylene blue (synthetic dye). Depending on the variant of heating applied during activation procedure, the obtained activated biochars differed significantly in terms of the elemental composition, acidic-basic properties as well as degree of specific surface development and the type of porous structure generated. Adsorption tests have showed that the efficiency of organic pollutants removal from aqueous solutions depends significantly not only on the type of the adsorbent and adsorbate applied, but also on the temperature and pH of the system. The sample prepared by microwave-assisted direct activation proved to be very effective in terms of all tested organic pollutants adsorption. The maximum sorption capacity toward Triton X-100, bovine serum albumin and methylene blue reached the level of 86.5, 23.4 and 81.1 mg/g, respectively.

RESUMO

The aggregation behavior of ubiquitous dissolved black carbon (DBC) largely affects the fate and transport of its own contaminants and the attached contaminants. However, the photoaging processes and resulting effects on its colloidal stability remain yet unknown. Herein, dissolved biochars (DBioCs) were extracted from common wheat straw biochar as a proxy for an anthropogenic DBC. The influences of UV radiation on their aggregation kinetics were systematically investigated under various water chemistries (pH, electrolytes, and protein). The environmental stability of the DBioCs before and after radiation was further verified in two natural water samples. Hamaker constants of pristine and photoaged DBioCs were derived according to Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) prediction, and its attenuation (3.19 ± 0.15 × 10-21 J to 1.55 ± 0.07 × 10-21 J after 7 days of radiation) was described with decay kinetic models. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the surface properties and aggregation behaviors of DBioCs were significantly correlated with radiation time (p < 0.05), indicating its profound effects. Based on characterization and experimental results, we proposed a three-stage mechanism (contended by photodecarboxylation, photo-oxidation, and mineral exposure) that DBioCs might experience under UV radiation. These findings would provide an important reference for potential phototransformation processes and relevant behavioral changes that DBC may encounter.

RESUMO

Al-KBC was produced through the simple pyrolysis of Al-modified kapok fibres at high temperatures. Using the N2 adsorption Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) process, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the sorbent changes and characteristics were analysed. As a result of Al's addition to the fibre's surface, Al-KBC exhibited superior As(V) adsorption performance compared to KBC due to better pore structures. Experiments on the kinetics of As(V) adsorption revealed that the adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order model and that intradiffusion was not the only factor governing the adsorption. Experiments with isotherms indicated that the adsorption mechanism corresponded to the Langmuir model, and the adsorption capacity Qm of Al-KBC at 25 °C was 483 µg/g. The thermodynamic experiments suggested that the adsorption reactions were spontaneous endothermic with a random approach at the adsorption interface. 25 mg/L of coexisting ions such as sulphate and phosphate reduced the sorbent As(V) removal ability to 65% and 39%. After seven cycles of adsorption/desorption, Al-KBC demonstrated satisfactory performance in terms of reusability, adsorbing 53% of 100 µg/L As(V) from the water. This novel BC can probably be used as a filter to purify groundwater with high As(V) concentration in the rural zone.

RESUMO

In this study, the feasibility of Mg/Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) functionalized coffee ground waste biochars (LDHMgAl@CWGB) as a potential adsorbent to selectively recover phosphate (PO43-) and nitrate (NO3-) ions in aqueous phases and their consecutive uses as a slow-release fertilizer for stimulating the plant growth were identified. The higher adsorption capacity of PO43- and NO3- ions by LDHMgAl@CWGB (PO43- = 6.98 mgP/g, NO3- = 2.82 mgN/g) compared with pristine coffee ground waste biochars (CWGB; PO43- = 0.19 mgP/g, NO3- = 0.32 mgN/g) was mainly due to the incorporation of Mg/Al mixed oxides and Cl contents. Chemisorption and intra-particle mainly controlled the adsorptive recovery of PO43- and NO3- ions by CWGB and LDHMgAl@CWGB in aqueous phases and their adsorption toward CWGB and LDHMgAl@CWGB proceeded endothermically and spontaneously. The changes in the major adsorption mechanisms of PO43- and NO3- ions from ligand exchange (CWGB) to electrostatic surface complexation and anion-exchange (LDHMgAl@CWGB) supported the conclusion that the alternation of the surface features through Mg/Al LDH functionalization might improve selectivity and adsorption capacity of PO43- and NO3- ions onto CWGB under the co-existence of Cl-, SO42-, and HCO3- ions. Since PO43-- and NO3--loaded LDHMgAl@CWGB exhibited much higher seed germination, root and shoot growth rates of garden cress seeds (Lepidium sativum L) than other liquid and solid matrices, including 5 mgP/L PO43- and 5 mgN/L NO3-, 10 mgP/L PO43- and 10 mgN/L NO3-, and LDHMgAl@CWGB, it can be postulated that PO43-- and NO3--loaded LDHMgAl@CWGB could be practically applicable to the agricultural field as a slow-release fertilizer to facilitate the seed germination, root and shoot growth of the plants.

RESUMO

Phosphorus (P) represents a major pollutant of water resources and at the same time a vital element for human and plants. P recovery from wastewaters and its reuse is a necessity in order to compensate the current important depletion of P natural reserves. The use of biochars for P recovery from wastewaters and their subsequent valorization in agriculture, instead of synthetic industrial fertilizers, promotes circular economy and sustainability concepts. However, P retention by pristine biochars is usually low and a modification step is always required to improve their P recovery efficiency. The pre- or post-treatment of biochars with metal salts seems to be one of the most efficient approaches. This review aims to summarize and discuss the most recent developments (from 2020- up to now) in: i) the role of the feedstock nature, the metal salt type, the pyrolysis conditions, and the experimental adsorption parameters on metallic-nanoparticles-loaded biochars properties and effectiveness in recovering P from aqueous solutions, as well as the dominant involved mechanisms, ii) the effect of the eluent solutions nature on the regeneration ability of P-loaded biochars, and iii) the practical challenges facing the upscaling of P-loaded biochars production and valorization in agriculture. This review shows that the synthesized biochars through slow pyrolysis at relatively high temperatures (up to 700-800 °C) of mixed biomasses with Ca- Mg-rich materials or impregnated biomasses with specific metals in order to from layered double hydroxides (LDHs) biochars composites exhibit interesting structural, textural and surface chemistry properties allowing high P recovery efficiency. Depending on the pyrolysis's and adsorption's experimental conditions, these modified biochars may recover P through combined mechanisms including mainly electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, surface complexation, hydrogen bonding, and precipitation. Moreover, the P-loaded biochars can be used directly in agriculture or efficiently regenerated with alkaline solutions. Finally, this review emphasizes the challenges concerning the production and use of P-loaded biochars in a context of circular economy. They concern the optimization of P recovery process from wastewater in real-time scenarios, the reduction of energy-related biochars production costs and the intensification of communication/dissemination campaigns to all the concerned actors (i.e., farmers, consumers, stakeholders, and policymakers) on the benefits of P-loaded biochars reuse. We believe that this review is beneficial for new breakthroughs on the synthesis and green application of metallic-nanoparticles-loaded biochars.

RESUMO

Chromium (Cr) is a potentially toxic metal occurring in the soil as a result of natural and anthropogenic activities and is mainly found in Cr3+ and Cr6+. The hexavalent chromium has toxic effects on plants, animals, humans and microorganisms depending on exposure level, duration and doses. Biochar is a stable carbon-based material that has been widely documented to immobilize metals in contaminated soils and for soil remediation effectively. The present 90 days incubation study was conducted to investigate the potential use of rice stubble and sawdust-derived modified biochars on Cr6+ remediation and their effects on nutrient availability. Among the treatments, modified rice stubble biochar (RSB-M) contained the highest surface area, pore volume and CEC. The unmodified and modified biochars significantly increased soil pH, EC, CEC, and N, K availability ((p < 0.001)). Statistical analysis showed that modified rice stubble (RSB-M) and sawdust biochars (SDB-M) significantly reduced the Cr6+ with incubation days compared to unmodified biochars, possibly due to the greater porous structure and various functional groups. The submerged incubation condition also greatly impacted Cr6+ reduction since a gradual decrease (up to ~70 mg kg-1 of Cr6+) was observed in control treatments. Therefore, applying modified biochars is imperative to alleviate Cr6+ polluted soils and improve soil fertility.

RESUMO

Antibiotic residues are of significant concern in the ecosystem because of their capacity to mediate antibiotic resistance development among environmental microbes. This paper reviews recent technologies for the abatement of antibiotics from human urine and wastewaters. Antibiotics are widely distributed in the aquatic environment as a result of the discharge of municipal sewage. Their existence is a cause for worry due to the potential ecological impact (for instance, antibiotic resistance) on bacteria in the background. Numerous contaminants that enter wastewater treatment facilities and the aquatic environment, as a result, go undetected. Sludge can act as a medium for some chemicals to concentrate while being treated as wastewater. The most sewage sludge that has undergone treatment is spread on agricultural land without being properly checked for pollutants. The fate of antibiotic residues in soils is hence poorly understood. The idea of the Separation of urine at the source has recently been propagated as a measure to control the flow of pharmaceutical residues into centralized wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). With the ever increasing acceptance of urine source separation practices, visibility and awareness on dedicated treatement technologies is needed. Human urine, as well as conventional WWTPs, are point sources of pharmaceutical micropollutants contributing to the ubiquitous detection of pharmaceutical residues in the receiving water bodies. Focused post-treatment of source-separated urine includes distillation and nitrification, ammonia stripping, and adsorption processes. Other reviewed methods include physical and biological treatment methods, advanced oxidation processes, and a host of combination treatment methods. All these are aimed at ensuring minimized risk products are returned to the environment.

RESUMO

This study comparatively investigated the influence of changes in pyrolysis temperature on the physicochemical, structural, and adsorptive properties of biochars derived from a green waste (Cynodon dactylon L.). For this purpose, the biophysically dried green wastes were pyrolyzed at 400 °C, 600 °C, and 800 °C under the same pyrolysis conditions. The results revealed that the physicochemical and structural properties were varied, depending upon the pyrolysis temperatures. With the increase of pyrolysis temperature, the surface functional groups were escaped, the structure became more porous (pore volume of 0.089 ± 0.001), the metal oxides were remained consistent, and the biochars turned into more alkaline nature (pH of 11.9 ± 0.2). Furthermore, as referring to the adsorptive performance for potentially toxic elements, with experimental adsorption capacity of up to 33.7 mg g-1 and removal rate up to 96% for a multi-metals containing solution, the biochars pyrolyzed at high temperature (800 °C) was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than those pyrolyzed at low temperature (400 °C). According to the physicochemical and structural properties, and the adsorptive performances of the biochars, the optimal pyrolysis temperature was herein recommended to be 800 °C.

RESUMO

To develop high-performance biochar adsorbents, the adsorption ability and rate of untreated (BC-CK) and six modified biochars with amino (BC-NH), epoxy (BC-C2H2O), ethoxy (BC-C2H5O), hydrosulfuryl (BC-SH), selenium (BC-Se), and chitosan (BC-Chitosan) on Hg(II) and MeHg were investigated by simulated experiment. The results indicated that the some modified biochars (BC-NH, BC-C2H2O, BC-C2H5O and BC-Chitosan) showed lower adsorption capacity than the untreated, possibly due to the decreased specific surface area and pore volume. Whereas, BC-SH and BC-Se was improved immensely by forming stable -SH-Hg and Hg-Se with the adsorption capacity 1.26 and 1.51 times as much as BC-CK, respectively. In spite of that, Hg desorption capacities and rates of all biochars were extremely low, exhibiting great adsorption stability of biochars on Hg in another way. In addition, BC-Chitosan performed the highest adsorption speed. These provided insights on the adsorption effectiveness for Hg in the aqueous solution that was critical for evaluating the application of modified biochars.

RESUMO

Environmental (pH, temperature ionic strength, cations, anions) and process (pyrolysis temperature, particle size, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration) parameters were evaluated for ciprofloxacin and acetaminophen sorption onto a series of sustainable banana peel biochars. Ciprofloxacin and acetaminophen were chosen as model pharmaceuticals for removal owing to their worldwide presence in aquatic systems. After pyrolytic preparation from 450 to 750 °C, the biochars were qualitatively and quantitatively characterized by physicochemical, morphological, mineralogical and elemental analyses. Batch sorption studies were employed to evaluate the pH effects from 2 to 10, biochar pyrolysis temperatures (450, 550, 650, and 750 °C), particle sizes (30-50, 50-100, 100-150 BSS mesh), adsorbent dosages (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 g/L), adsorbate concentrations (0.5-200 ppm) and uptake temperatures (10, 25, 40 °C) on sorption efficiency. Maximum pharmaceutical sorption is achieved by the biochar prepared at 750 °C. Sorption rate increased with decrease in biochar particle size from 30 to 50 to 100-150 BSS mesh. Relationships between biochar properties and their sorptive potential showed positive correlations with surface area, total pore volume, %C, %ash and C/N molar ratios. Sorption data was modelled using different isotherm models and both kinetic and thermodynamic equations. Maximum Langmuir capacities of ciprofloxacin and acetaminophen on BPBC750 were 23.3 and 40.8 mg/g at 10 °C; 21.0 and 49.93 mg/g at 25 °C and 20.42 and 57.3 mg/g at 45 °C, respectively. Langmuir isotherm fittings and thermodynamic parameters confirmed the exothermic sorption (for ciprofloxacin) and endothermic sorption (for acetaminophen). The role of ionic strength, cations and anions on pharmaceuticals sorption were evaluated. H-bonding, π-π-interactions and pore diffusion were major contributors to pharmaceutical sorption.

RESUMO

Cadmium (Cd) due to its strong toxicity and high mobility, which poses a considerable threat to soil environment and human health, has aroused widespread concern. Biochar has been used for remediating Cd-contaminated soil recently, however this method has the risk of fixed-Cd re-release. Phytoremediation can make up for its shortcoming. In this study, a pot experiment was carried out, where Bidens pilosa L. (B.pilosa) was as the tested plant and biochars (maize straw biochar and wheat straw biochar with two particle sizes) were as amendments. The mechanism of how biochars promoted B.pilosa Cd accumulation in Cd-contaminated farmland soil was explored. Results showed that the application of 5% wheat straw fine biochar (WF), wheat straw coarse biochar (WC), maize straw fine biochar (MF) and maize straw coarse biochar (MC) increased the total Cd accumulation of B.pilosa to 251.57%, 217.41%, 321.64% and 349.66%, respectively. Biochars amendment significantly promoted B.pilosa growth and increased Cd accumulation by improving soil physical properties, nutrient levels (available nitrogen, available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK) and organic matter (OM)) and microbial activity, and changing the nutrients distribution in B.pilosa organs although tissues although DTPA-Cd reduced to some extent. The effect of MF on AP increase was better than MC, while the effect of WF on AK increase was better than WC. Fine-particle was superior to coarse-particle in increasing B.pilosa biomass of aboveground, OM and microbial activity in soil. The changes of N, P and K concentrations in B.pilsosa roots, stems and leaves were closely related to the changes of AN, AP and AK in soil after biochars application. The results indicated that the combination of straw biochars and hyperaccumulators had the synergistic effect. This study can provide data support and meaningful reference values for remediating actual Cd-contaminated soil.

RESUMO

Disposal of the pollutants arising from farming cattle and other livestock threatens the environment and public safety in diverse ways. Herein, we report on the synthesis of engineered biochars using cow dung as raw material, and investigating these biochars as antibacterial agents for water decontamination. By coating the biochars with N-halamine polymer and loading them with active chlorine (i.e., Cl+), we were able to regulate them on demand by tuning the polymer coating and bleaching conditions. The obtained N-halamine-modified biochars were found to be extremely potent against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. We also investigated the possibility of using these N-halamine-modified biochars for bacterial decontamination in real-world applications. Our findings indicated that a homemade filter column packed with N-halamine-modified biochars removed pathogenic bacteria from mining sewage, dairy sewage, domestic sewage, and artificial seawater. This proposed strategy could indicate a new way for utilizing livestock pollutants to create on-demand decontaminants.

RESUMO

In this study, the effect of biochar (BC) derived from Litchi chinensis Sonn. and its modification, including Ca-biochar (Ca-BC) and Fe-Mn-biochar (Fe-Mn-BC), on the transportation of oestrone (E1) in water and soil was investigated. Fe-Mn-BC showed better adsorption ability than other types of biochar (BC, Ca-BC) under different conditions (humic acid, pH, ionic strength) in an aqueous environment. The maximum mass of sorbent at 298 K increased from 1.12 mg g-1 (BC) to 4.18 mg g-1 (Fe-Mn-BC). Humic acid had a greater impact on aqueous E1 adsorption on these biochars than did the pH and ionic strength. Fe-Mn-BC as a soil amendment had a great control of E1 transport in soil, and no leachate of E1 was observed in the column experiment. E1 mobility showed strong retardation in amended soil with Ca-BC (Rf = 11.2) compared with raw soil (Rf = 7.1). These results suggested that Fe-Mn-BC was more effective in controlling E1 transportation, and Fe-Mn-BC could be used as an alternative and inexpensive adsorbent to reduce E1 contaminants from water and soil.

RESUMO

Sludge-based biochars (SBB) were prepared to evaluate their physiochemical properties and safety performance for the possible application in soil amendments in this study. SBB were produced at the temperatures ranging from 300 to 900 °C at 200 °C intervals. Both the solid fraction and the soluble organic fraction of SBB were analyzed. The pyrolysis temperature was found to affect the characteristics of solid fraction of the SBB greatly, in terms of the pH, surface area and functional groups. The content and composition of dissolved organic matter in SBB were influenced evidently by pyrolysis temperatures, which was mainly comprised of humic-like compounds with the molecular weight in a range of 0.13-2.4 × 105 kDa. The safety performance of heavy metals in SBB at different temperatures were analyzed: (i) The bioavailable fractions (F1+F2+F3) of heavy metals significantly decreased from 91.65% to 9.44% for Cu, from 98.82% to 63.34% for Zn, from 97.91% to 52.11% for As, from 55.91% to 4.87% for Pb, from 78.20% to 12.50% for Cd, and from 73.51% to 9.57% for Cr when sludge was pyrolyzed to biochars at 900 °C.; (ii) Acid and alkaline conditions promoted the leaching of heavy metals from SBB. The luminescence inhibition of Vibrio fischeri was significantly decreased from 81.41% to 6.01% with the increasing pyrolysis temperatures. Compared with the raw sludge addition, the shoot length, root length and activities of soil microbes in sandy soil and loamy soil with pyrolyzed sludge under different pyrolysis temperatures were increased by 37.5-53.32%, 66.81-96.45%, 92.31-157.69% and 154.74-195.76%, respectively. The biotoxicity tests indicated the relatively safe and reliable performance of SBB. The study provided significant perspectives on the application of SBB as the potential soil amendments.

RESUMO

Effects of sewage sludge biochars (SSBCs) on the growth of wheat and the specific toxicological mechanisms were investigated from a metabolic perspective for better ecological risk assessment. We observed that conversion of sludge to biochar remarkably changed the properties, and also caused a significant (p < 0.05) reduction of the toxicity towards wheat. Wheat growth under exposure to SSBCs was influenced by the pyrolysis temperature (300 °C, 500 °C and 700 °C), with root length being promoted by SSBCs prepared at higher temperatures (500 °C and 700 °C). In addition to the contaminants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) detected in SSBCs, the morphological characteristics of biochars contributed substantially to the wheat growth. Metabolomics analysis revealed the remarkable differences in the metabolic profiles among the control (CK), SS300- and SS700-treated samples. The toxicological mechanisms involved were found to be associated with the regulation of metabolisms pathways of protein, fatty acids and carbohydrates, among which protein metabolism was most affected by SSBCs. This work presents an innovative concept that SSBCs produced at a proper temperature may minimize the toxic effects on plant growth by regulating the metabolic fluxes in vivo.

RESUMO

The conversion of organic wastes into biochar via the pyrolysis technique could be used to produce soil amendments useful as a source of plant nutrients. In this study, we investigated the effects of fruit peels and milk tea waste-derived biochars on wheat growth, yield, root traits, soil enzyme activities and nutrient status. Eight amendment treatments were tested: no amendment (CK), chemical fertilizer (CF), banana peel biochar 1% (BB1 + CF), banana peel biochar 2% (BB2 + CF), orange peel biochar 1% (OB1 + CF), orange peel biochar 2% (OB2 + CF), milk tea waste biochar 1% (TB1 + CF) and milk tea waste biochar 2% (TB2 + CF). The results indicated that chlorophyll values, plant height, grain yield, dry weight of shoot and root were significantly (p < 0.05) increased for the TB2 + CF treatment as compared to other treatments. Similarly, higher contents of nutrients in grains, shoots and roots were observed for TB2 + CF: N (61.3, 23.3 and 7.6 g kg-1), P (9.2, 10.4 and 8.3 g kg-1) and K (9.1, 34.8 and 4.4 g kg-1). Compared to CK, the total root length (41.1%), surface area (56.5%), root volume (54.2%) and diameter (78.4%) were the greatest for TB2 + CF, followed by BB2 + CF, OB2 + CF, TB1 + CF, BB1 + CF, OB1 + CF and CF, respectively. However, BB + CF and OB + CF treatments increased ß-glucosidase and dehydrogenase, but not urease activity, as compared to the TB + CF amendment, while all enzyme activity decreased with the increased biochar levels. We concluded that the conversion of fruit peels and milk tea waste into biochar products contribute the benefits of environmental and economic issues, and should be tested as soil amendments combined with chemical fertilizers for the improvement of wheat growth and grain yield as well as soil fertility status under field conditions.

RESUMO

Water contamination of As is a big issue in many areas around the globe. Therefore, cheap and efficient techniques are essential facing traditional treatment methods. Then, biochars (BC) emerged recently as material that can be used for As removal. However, research about efficiency of BC produced from local feedstock is still needed. The purpose of this study is to assess the efficiency of BC produced from sugarcane bagasse (SB) together with corncob husk (CH) with and without Fe(III) (BCFe) modification to be used for removal of As(III) from waters. The BC and BCFe produced at different pyrolysis temperatures were characterised using FTIR and SEM/EDS. Adsorption capacities of BC and BCFe were evaluated via batch adsorption, desorption and column tests and their performance was compared with adsorption using activated carbon. The results showed that Fe modification improve substantially the As(III) adsorption in a way that both BCFe-SB and BCFe-CH removed from 85% to 99.9% from 1000 µg/L As(III) solutions. Both materials fitted well in Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacity was 20 mg/g for BCFe-SB and 50 mg/g for BCFe-CH. The adsorption kinetics of BCFe was fast (≤ 30 min) and it had a better performance than activated carbon. The column tests showed that the process is efficient even at high As(III) concentrations. The fast removal process and good removal results make the BCFe-SB and BCFe-CH attractive for in situ and commercial (filters) use, since time and efficiency are required in new technologies.

RESUMO

Here, we report a pyrolyzed guinea fowl manure-derived biochar (GFM-BC) and cattle manure-derived biochar (CTM-BC) and their use as adsorbent for the removal of divalent copper from aqueous media was evaluated. The BCs physical and chemical properties were characterized by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Elemental dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared microscopy (FTIR) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The results presented that the BCs obtained higher content were quite effective for Cu (II) removal with maximum capacities of 43.60 and 44.50 mg g-1 for GFM-BC and CTM-BC, respectively. From simulation of experimental data with different adsorption isotherms and kinetics models it was found that the adsorption of both BCs was adequately fitted by Freundlich adsorption model and pseudo-second order kinetic model, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters suggested that the adsorption of Cu (II) onto both BCs was feasible, spontaneous and exothermic under evaluated parameters. Thus, the biomass used in this study proved to be effective adsorbents for the removal of Cu (II) from aqueous media.

RESUMO

The growing industrial application of imidazolium-type ionic liquids (ITILs) is likely to result in their release to the environment. Water-soluble ITILs are difficult to remove from wastewaters using traditional adsorbents. In this work, we developed different biochars derived from straw and wood (named as SBB and WBB, respectively) to improve the adsorption effectiveness for removal of ITILs from wastewaters. SBB had high O/C element ratio (0.143), while WBB had high ratio of Vmicro/Vtotal (61.5%) compared with commercial activated carbon (AC). Both of them showed greater adsorption of ITILs than AC with different adsorption mechanisms. FTIR spectra revealed that electrostatic interactions were the dominant driving force in SBB adsorption, while high micropore volume promoted adsorption in WBB. The adsorption of [C2mim][BF4] on SBB and WBB was strongly enhanced by trivalent PO4(3-) anions, suggesting that PO4(3-) anions could be used as promoter to increase the removal efficiency of ITILs from wastewater. Using HCl solution (pH=0.5) as regenerant, SBB and WBB were regenerated with nearly 100% recovery of adsorption capacity over ten consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. Straw-based biochar and wood-based biochar are efficient sorbents for removal of water-soluble ionic liquids from aqueous solutions.
