Inconsistent alterations in skeletal muscle histology have been reported in adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) and whether alterations are present in young children and differ from older children is not yet known. This study aimed to define histological alterations in the medial gastrocnemius (MG) of ambulant CP (gross-motor classification system, GMFCS I-III) stratified in two age groups (preschool children, PS: 2-5 and school age children, SA: 6-9-yr old) compared with age-matched typically developing (TD) children. We hypothesized that alterations in muscle microscopic properties are already present in PS-CP and are GMFCS level specific. Ultrasound guided percutaneous microbiopsies were collected in 46 CP (24-PS) and 45 TD (13-PS) children. Sections were stained to determine fiber cross-sectional area (fCSA) and proportion, capillary, and satellite cell amount. Average absolute and normalized fCSA were similar in CP and TD, but a greater percentage of smaller fibers was found in CP. Coefficient of variation (CV) was significantly larger in PS-CP-GMFCS I-II and for type I fiber. In SA-CP, all fiber types contributed to the higher CV. Type IIx proportion was higher and type I was lower in PS-CP-GMFCS-III and for all SA-CP. Reduced capillary-to-fiber ratio was present in PS-CP-GMFCS II-III and in all SA-CP. Capillary fiber density was lower in SA-CP. Capillary domain was enhanced in all CP, but capillary spatial distribution was maintained as was satellite cell content. We concluded that MG histological alterations are already present in very young CP but are only partly specific for GMFCS level and age.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Inconsistent histological alterations have been reported in children with cerebral palsy (CP) but whether they are present in very young and ambulant CP children and differ from those reported in old CP children is not known. This study highlighted for the first time that enhanced muscle fiber size variability and loss of capillaries are already present in very young CP children, even in the most ambulant ones, and these alterations seem to extend with age.

MAIN CONCLUSION: The anatomical structures of Carex moorcroftii roots showing stronger plasticity during drought had a lower coefficient of variation in cell size in the same habitats, while those showing weaker plasticity had a higher coefficient of variation. The complementary relationship between these factors comprises the adaptation mechanism of the C. moorcroftii root to drought. To explore the effects of habitat drought on root anatomy of hygrophytic plants, this study focused on roots of C. moorcroftii. Five sample plots were set up along a soil moisture gradient in the Western Sichuan Plateau to collect experimental materials. Paraffin sectioning was used to obtain root anatomy, and one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis, linear regression analysis, and RDA ranking were applied to analyze the relationship between root anatomy and soil water content. The results showed that the root transverse section area, thickness of epidermal cells, exodermis and Casparian strips, and area of aerenchyma were significantly and positively correlated with soil moisture content (P < 0.01). The diameter of the vascular cylinder and the number and total area of vessels were significantly and negatively correlated with the soil moisture content (P < 0.01). The plasticity of the anatomical structures was strong for the diameter and area of the vascular cylinder and thickness of the Casparian strip and epidermis, while it was weak for vessel diameter and area. In addition, there was an asymmetrical relationship between the functional adaptation of root anatomical structure in different soil moisture and the variation degree of root anatomical structure in the same soil moisture. Therefore, the roots of C. moorcroftii can shorten the water transport distance from the epidermis to the vascular cylinder, increase the area of the vascular cylinder and the number of vessels, and establish a complementary relationship between the functional adaptation of root anatomical structure in different habitats and the variation degree of root anatomical structure in the same habitat to adapt to habitat drought. This study provides a scientific basis for understanding the response of plateau wetland plants to habitat changes and their ecological adaptation strategies. More scientific experimental methods should be adopted to further study the mutual coordination mechanisms of different anatomical structures during root adaptation to habitat drought for hygrophytic plants.

Literature values vary widely for within-subject test-retest reproducibility of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) measured with edited magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Reasons for this variation remain unclear. Here, we tested whether three acquisition parameters-(1) sequence complexity (two-experiment MEscher-GArwood Point RESolved Spectroscopy [MEGA-PRESS] vs. four-experiment Hadamard Encoding and Reconstruction of MEGA-Edited Spectroscopy [HERMES]); (2) editing pulse duration (14 vs. 20 ms); and (3) scanner frequency drift (interleaved water referencing [IWR] turned ON vs. OFF)-and two linear combination modeling variations-(1) three different coedited macromolecule models (called "1to1GABA", "1to1GABAsoft", and "3to2MM" in the Osprey software package); and (2) 0.55- versus 0.4-ppm spline baseline knot spacing-affected the within-subject coefficient of variation of GABA + macromolecules (GABA+). We collected edited MRS data from the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex from 20 participants (mean age: 30.8 ± 9.5 years; 10 males). Test and retest scans were separated by removing the participant from the scanner for 5-10 min. Each acquisition consisted of two MEGA-PRESS and two HERMES sequences with editing pulse durations of 14 and 20 ms (referred to here as MEGA-14, MEGA-20, HERMES-14, and HERMES-20; all TE = 80 ms, 224 averages). We identified the best test-retest reproducibility following postprocessing with a composite model of the 0.9- and 3-ppm macromolecules ("3to2MM"); this model performed particularly well for the HERMES data. Furthermore, sparser (0.55- compared with 0.4-ppm) spline baseline knot spacing yielded generally better test-retest reproducibility for GABA+. Replicating our prior results, linear combination modeling in Osprey compared with simple peak fitting in Gannet resulted in substantially better test-retest reproducibility. However, reproducibility did not consistently differ for MEGA-PRESS compared with HERMES, for 14- compared with 20-ms editing pulses, or for IWR-ON versus IWR-OFF. These results highlight the importance of model selection for edited MRS studies of GABA+, particularly for clinical studies that focus on individual patient differences in GABA+ or changes following an intervention.

Meta-analyses traditionally compare the difference in means between groups for one or more outcomes of interest. However, they do not compare the spread of data (variability), which could mean that important effects and/or subgroups are missed. To address this, methods to compare variability meta-analytically have recently been developed, making it timely to review them and consider their strengths, weaknesses, and implementation. Using published data from trials in major depression, we demonstrate how the spread of data can impact both overall effect size and the frequency of extreme observations within studies, with potentially important implications for conclusions of meta-analyses, such as the clinical significance of findings. We then describe two methods for assessing group differences in variability meta-analytically: the variance ratio (VR) and coefficient of variation ratio (CVR). We consider the reporting and interpretation of these measures and how they differ from the assessment of heterogeneity between studies. We propose general benchmarks as a guideline for interpreting VR and CVR effects as small, medium, or large. Finally, we discuss some important limitations and practical considerations of VR and CVR and consider the value of integrating variability measures into meta-analyses.

In multiple myeloma (MM) bone marrow infiltration by monoclonal plasma cells can occur in both focal and diffuse manner, making staging and prognosis rather difficult. The aim of our study was to test whether texture analysis of 18 F-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) images can predict survival in MM patients. Forty-six patients underwent 18 F-FDG-PET/CT before treatment. We used an automated contouring program for segmenting the hottest focal lesion (FL) and a lumbar vertebra for assessing diffuse bone marrow involvement (DI). Maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), mean standardized uptake value (SUVmean) and texture features such as Coefficient of variation (CoV), were obtained from 46 FL and 46 DI. After a mean follow-up of 51 months, 24 patients died of myeloma and were compared to the 22 survivors. At univariate analysis, FL SUVmax (p = 0.0453), FL SUVmean (p = 0.0463), FL CoV (p = 0.0211) and DI SUVmax (p = 0.0538) predicted overall survival (OS). At multivariate analysis only FL CoV and DI SUVmax were retained in the model (p = 0.0154). By Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank testing, patients with FL CoV below the cut-off had significantly better OS than those with FL CoV above the cut-off (p = 0.0003), as well as patients with DI SUVmax below the threshold versus those with DI SUVmax above the threshold (p = 0.0006). Combining FL CoV and DI SUVmax by using their respective cut-off values, a statistically significant difference was found between the resulting four survival curves (p = 0.0001). Indeed, patients with both FL CoV and DI SUVmax below their respective cut-off values showed the best prognosis. Conventional and texture parameters derived from 18F-FDG PET/CT analysis can predict survival in MM patients by assessing the heterogeneity and aggressiveness of both focal and diffuse infiltration.

AIMS: To elucidate the clinical determinants of the coefficient of variation (CV) of glucose by analysing the pancreatic ß-cell function of subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: A total of 716 Chinese subjects with T2DM were included. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) was used to assess blood glucose, and the CV was calculated. C-peptide concentration at 0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 hours (Cp0h, Cp0.5h, Cp1h, Cp2h and Cp3h, respectively) was measured after a standard 100-g steamed bun meal test to assess pancreatic ß-cell function. The determinants of glucose variability defined by the CV of CGM values were explored from two perspectives: the CV of qualitative variables and the CV of quantitative variables. RESULTS: Our data revealed that C-peptide concentration (Cp0h, Cp0.5h, Cp1h, Cp2h, Cp3h), area under the curve for C-peptide concentration at 0.5 and 3 hours (AUC-Cp0.5h and AUC-Cp3h) decreased with increasing CV quartile (P < 0.05). The CV was negatively correlated with homeostatic model assessment of ß-cell function index, C-peptide concentration at all timepoints, and AUC-Cp0.5h and AUC-Cp3h (P < 0.001). Quantile regression analysis showed that AUC-Cp0.5h had an overall negative effect on the CV in the 0.05 to 0.95 quartiles, and AUC-Cp3h tended to have a negative effect on the CV in the 0.2 to 0.65 quartiles. After adjusting for confounders, multinomial logistic regression showed that each 1-unit increase in AUC-Cp0.5h was associated with a 31.7% reduction in the risk of unstable glucose homeostasis (CV > 36%; P = 0.036; odds ratio 0.683; 95% confidence interval 0.478-0.976). We also identified the AUC-Cp0.5h (0.735 ng/mL) and AUC-Cp3h (13.355 ng/mL) cut-off values for predicting unstable glucose homeostasis (CV >36%) in T2DM subjects. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that impaired pancreatic ß-cell function may be a clinical determining factor of CV of glucose in people with T2DM.

Despite frequent claims regarding radical extensions of human lifespan in the near future, many pragmatic scientists caution against excessive and baseless optimism on this front. In this study, we examine the compensation effect of mortality (CEM) as a potential challenge to substantial lifespan extension. The CEM is an empirical mortality regularity, often depicted as relative mortality convergence at advanced ages. Analysis of mortality data from 44 human populations, available in the Human Mortality Database, demonstrated that CEM can be represented as a continuous decline in relative mortality variation (assessed through the coefficient of variation and the standard deviation of the logarithm of mortality) with age, reaching a minimum corresponding to the species-specific lifespan. Through this method, the species-specific lifespan is determined to be 96-97 years, closely aligning with estimates derived from correlations between Gompertz parameters (95-98 years). Importantly, this representation of CEM can be achieved non-parametrically, eliminating the need for estimating Gompertz parameters. CEM is a challenge to lifespan extension, because it suggests that the true aging rate in humans (based on loss of vital elements, e.g., functional cells) remains stable at approximately 1% per year in the majority of human populations and is not affected by environmental or familial longevity factors. Given this rate of functional cell loss, one might anticipate that the total pool of functional cells could be entirely depleted by the age of 115-120 years creating physiological limit to human lifespan. Mortality pattern of supercentenarians (110 + years) aligns with this prediction.

INTRODUCTION: Cluster randomised trials (CRTs) are the gold standard for measuring the community-wide impacts of malaria control tools. CRTs rely on well-defined sample size estimations to detect statistically significant effects of trialled interventions, however these are often predicted poorly by triallists. Here, we review the accuracy of predicted parameters used in sample size calculations for malaria CRTs with epidemiological outcomes. METHODS: We searched for published malaria CRTs using four online databases in March 2022. Eligible trials included those with malaria-specific epidemiological outcomes which randomised at least six geographical clusters to study arms. Predicted and observed sample size parameters were extracted by reviewers for each trial. Pair-wise Spearman's correlation coefficients (rs) were calculated to assess the correlation between predicted and observed control-arm outcome measures and effect sizes (relative percentage reductions) between arms. Among trials which retrospectively calculated an estimate of heterogeneity in cluster outcomes, we recalculated study power according to observed trial estimates. RESULTS: Of the 1889 records identified and screened, 108 articles were eligible and comprised of 71 malaria CRTs. Among 91.5% (65/71) of trials that included sample size calculations, most estimated cluster heterogeneity using the coefficient of variation (k) (80%, 52/65) which were often predicted without using prior data (67.7%, 44/65). Predicted control-arm prevalence moderately correlated with observed control-arm prevalence (rs: 0.44, [95%CI: 0.12,0.68], p-value < 0.05], with 61.2% (19/31) of prevalence estimates overestimated. Among the minority of trials that retrospectively calculated cluster heterogeneity (20%, 13/65), empirical values contrasted with those used in sample size estimations and often compromised study power. Observed effect sizes were often smaller than had been predicted at the sample size stage (72.9%, 51/70) and were typically higher in the first, compared to the second, year of trials. Overall, effect sizes achieved by malaria interventions tested in trials decreased between 1995 and 2021. CONCLUSIONS: Study findings reveal sample size parameters in malaria CRTs were often inaccurate and resulted in underpowered studies. Future trials must strive to obtain more representative epidemiological sample size inputs to ensure interventions against malaria are adequately evaluated. BACKGROUND: The pharmacokinetics of tacrolimus (TAC) show high intra-patient variability (IPV), which is associated with poor long-term outcomes following adult liver transplantation (LT). However, this relationship remains to be confirmed in pediatric liver transplant (PLT) recipients. The present study aimed to investigate the association between TAC IPV and grafts or patient outcomes after pediatric liver transplantion. METHODS: This retrospective study included 848 PLT recipients (including infants) between January, 2016, and June, 2021. The IPV of TAC concentrations was estimated by calculating the coefficient of variation (CV) of trough concentrations in whole blood within 1 month after transplantation. Patients were categorized into two groups, low IPV (CV < 45%) and high IPV (CV ≥ 45%), based on the third quartile of the CV distribution. RESULTS: A total of 848 patients were included in our study. The low CV group included 614 patients, with a mean TAC trough concentration of 8.59 ± 1.65 ng/ml and a median CV of 32.37%. In contrast, the high CV group included 214 patients, the mean TAC trough concentration and median CV were 8.81 ± 2.00 ng/ml and 54.88%, respectively. The median hospital duration was significantly higher in the high CV group (22 days vs. 20 days, P = 0.01). Univariate analysis was performed to evaluate the significant differences in 1-year recipient survival (P = 0.041) and 1-year graft survival (P = 0.005) between the high- and low-CV groups. Moreover, high CV (HR 2.316, 95%CI 1.026-5.231, P = 0.043) and persistent EBV viremia (HR 13.165, 95%CI 3.090-56.081, P < 0.001) were identified as independent risk factors for 1- year mortality after PLT. CONCLUSIONS: PLT recipients with high TAC trough concentration of CV in the first month were associated with poor 1-year outcomes. This CV calculation provides a valuable strategy to monitor TAC exposure.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the spatial coefficient of variation of arterial spin labeling (ASL-CoV) acquired in clinical settings can be used to estimate decreased cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) measured with single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and acetazolamide challenge in patients with atherosclerotic stenosis of intra- or extracranial arteries. METHODS: We evaluated the data of 27 atherosclerotic stenosis patients who underwent pseudocontinuous ASL and SPECT. After spatial normalization, regional values were measured using the distributed middle cerebral artery territorial atlas of each patient. We performed comparisons, correlations, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses between ASL-cerebral blood blow (CBF), ASL-CoV, SPECT-CBF and SPECT-CVR. RESULTS: Although the ASL-CBF values were positively correlated with SPECT-CBF values (r = 0.48, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.28-0.64), no significant difference in ASL-CBF values was detected between regions with and without decreased CVR. However, regions with decreased CVR had significantly greater ASL-CoV values than regions without decreased CVR. SPECT-CVR was negatively correlated with ASL-CoV (ρ = -0.29, 95% CI = -0.49 - -0.06). The area under the ROC curve of ASL-CoV in predicting decreased CVR (0.66, 95% CI = 0.51-0.81) was greater than that of ASL-CBF (0.51, 95% CI = 0.34-0.68). An ASL-CoV threshold value of 42% achieved a high specificity of 0.93 (sensitivity = 0.42, positive predictive value = 0.77, and negative predictive value = 0.75). CONCLUSION: ASL-CoV acquired by single postlabeling delay without an acetazolamide challenge may aid in the identification of patients with decreased CVR on SPECT.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to use electronic opioid dispensing data to develop an individual segmented trajectory approach for identifying opioid use patterns. The resulting opioid use patterns can be used for examining the association between opioid use and drug overdose. METHODS: We retrospectively assembled a cohort of members on long-term opioid therapy (LTOT) between January 1, 2006 and June 30, 2019 who were 18 years and older and enrolled in one of three health care systems in the US. We have developed an individual segmented trajectory analysis for identifying various opioid use patterns by scanning over the follow-up and finding distinct opioid use patterns based on variability measured with coefficient of variation and trends of milligram morphine equivalents levels. RESULTS: Among 31, 865 members who were on LTOT between January 1, 2006 and June 30, 2019, 58.3% were female, and the average age was 55.4 years (STD = 15.4). The study population had 152 557 person-years of follow-up, with an average follow-up of 4.4 years per enrollment per person (STD = 3.4). This novel approach identified up to 13 distinct patterns including 88 756 episodes of "stable" pattern (42.1%) with an average follow-up of 11.2 months, 29 140 episodes of "increasing" pattern (13.8%) with an average follow-up of 6.0 months, 13 201 episodes of ≤10% dose reduction (6.3%) with an average follow-up of 10.4 months, 7286 episodes of 11%-20% dose reduction (3.5%) with an average follow-up of 5.3 months, 4457 episodes of 21%-30% dose reduction (2.1%) with an average follow-up of 4.0 months, and 9903 episodes of >30% dose reduction (4.7%) with an average follow-up of 2.6 months. CONCLUSIONS: A novel approach was developed to identify 13 distinct opioid use patterns using each individual's longitudinal dispensing data and these patterns can be used in examining overdose risk during the time that these patterns are ongoing.

Understanding disease transmission in the workplace is essential for protecting workers. To model disease outbreaks, the small populations in many workplaces require that stochastic effects are considered, which results in higher uncertainty. The aim of this study was to quantify and interpret the uncertainty inherent in such circumstances. We assessed how uncertainty of an outbreak in workplaces depends on i) the infection dynamics in the community, ii) the workforce size, iii) spatial structure in the workplace, iv) heterogeneity in susceptibility of workers, and v) heterogeneity in infectiousness of workers. To address these questions, we developed a multiscale model: A deterministic model to predict community transmission, and a stochastic model to predict workplace transmission. We extended this basic workplace model to allow for spatial structure, and heterogeneity in susceptibility and infectiousness in workers. We found a non-monotonic relationship between the workplace transmission rate and the coefficient of variation (CV), which we use as a measure of uncertainty. Increasing community transmission, workforce size and heterogeneity in susceptibility decreased the CV. Conversely, increasing the level of spatial structure and heterogeneity in infectiousness increased the CV. However, when the model predicts bimodal distributions, for example when community transmission is low and workplace transmission is high, the CV fails to capture this uncertainty. Overall, our work informs modellers and policy makers on how model complexity impacts outbreak uncertainty. In particular: workforce size, community and workplace transmission, spatial structure and individual heterogeneity contribute in a specific and individual manner to the predicted workplace outbreak size distribution.

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence of acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with a higher risk of mortality in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study aimed to explore the relationship between serum magnesium levels and the risk of AKI in patients with TBI. METHODS: Patients with TBI were identified from the Medical Information Mart Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) 2008-2019. The relationship between serum magnesium levels at admission and magnesium coefficient of variation (CV) during hospitalization and the risk of AKI was analyzed using multivariable logistic regression analysis and expressed as odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Subgroup analyses were performed according to Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score (<14, ≥14), sepsis (no, yes), and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR; <60, ≥60). RESULTS: Of the 991 patients included, 140 (14.13%) developed AKI during hospitalization. Patients with magnesium levels ≤1.7 mg/dL (tertile 1) (OR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.01-2.81) were associated with a higher risk of AKI compared to those with magnesium levels of 1.7-2.0 mg/dL (tertile 2), but no association was found in those with magnesium levels >2.0 mg/dL (tertile 3) (p = 0.479). For magnesium CV, patients with magnesium CV >10% (tertile 3) (OR = 2.26, 95% CI: 1.16-4.41) were linked to an increased risk of AKI compared to those with magnesium CV ≤4% (tertile 1), but there may be a slight association between magnesium CV of 4%-10% (tertile 2) and AKI risk (OR = 1.86, 95% CI: 0.99-3.48; p = 0.053). Subgroup analyses showed that lower magnesium levels (≤1.7 mg/dL) or greater magnesium CV (>10%) were associated with a higher risk of AKI only in patients with a GCS score ≥14, non-sepsis, or eGFR ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Lower serum magnesium levels at admission or greater magnesium CV during hospitalization were associated with a higher risk of AKI in patients with TBI.

BACKGROUND: Adequate preoperative evaluation of the post-intubation hemodynamic instability (PIHI) is crucial for accurate risk assessment and efficient anesthesia management. However, the incorporation of this evaluation within a predictive framework have been insufficiently addressed and executed. This study aims to developed a machine learning approach for preoperatively and precisely predicting the PIHI index values. METHODS: In this retrospective study, the valid features were collected from 23,305 adult surgical patients at Peking Union Medical College Hospital between 2012 and 2020. Three hemodynamic response sequences including systolic pressure, diastolic pressure and heart rate, were utilized to design the post-intubation hemodynamic instability (PIHI) index by computing the integrated coefficient of variation (ICV) values. Different types of machine learning models were constructed to predict the ICV values, leveraging preoperative patient information and initiatory drug infusion. The models were trained and cross-validated based on balanced data using the SMOTETomek technique, and their performance was evaluated according to the mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and R-squared index (R2). RESULTS: The ICV values were proved to be consistent with the anesthetists' ratings with Spearman correlation coefficient of 0.877 (P < 0.001), affirming its capability to effectively capture the PIHI variations. The extra tree regression model outperformed the other models in predicting the ICV values with the smallest MAE (0.0512, 95% CI: 0.0511-0.0513), RMSE (0.0792, 95% CI: 0.0790-0.0794), and MAPE (0.2086, 95% CI: 0.2077-0.2095) and the largest R2 (0.9047, 95% CI: 0.9043-0.9052). It was found that the features of age and preoperative hemodynamic status were the most important features for accurately predicting the ICV values. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate the potential of the machine learning approach in predicting PIHI index values, thereby preoperatively informing anesthetists the possible anesthetic risk and enabling the implementation of individualized and precise anesthesia interventions.

BACKGROUND: We investigated whether non-enhancement MRI features, including measurement of the heterogeneity of the tumor with MR T2 imaging by calculating coefficient of variation (CV) values, were associated with the prognosis of non-metastatic malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST). METHODS: This retrospective study included 42 patients with MPNST who had undergone surgical resection (mean age, 50 years ± 21; 20 male participants). Non-enhancement MR images were evaluated for signal intensity heterogeneity on T1- and T2-weighted imaging, tumor margin definition on T1- and T2-weighted imaging, peritumoral edema on T2-weight imaging, and CV. We measured the signal intensities of MR T2-weighted images and calculated the corresponding CV values. CV is defined as the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean. The associations between factors and overall survival (OS) were investigated via the Kaplan-Meier method with log-rank tests and the Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS: The mean CV value of MR T2 images was 0.2299 ± 0.1339 (standard deviation) (range, 0.0381-0.8053). Applying receiver operating characteristics analysis, the optimal cut-off level for CV value was 0.137. This cut-off CV value was used for its stratification into high and low CV values. At multivariate survival analysis, a high CV value (hazard ratio = 3.63; 95% confidence interval = 1.16-16.0; p = 0.047) was identified as an independent predictor of OS. CONCLUSION: The CV value of the signal intensity of heterogenous MPNSTs MR T2-weighted images is an independent predictor of patients' OS.

Attempting to differentiate phenotypic variation caused by environmentally-induced alterations in gene expression from that caused by actual allelic differences can be experimentally difficult. Environmental variables must be carefully controlled and then interindividual genetic differences ruled out as sources of phenotypic variation. We investigated phenotypic variability of cardiorespiratory physiology as well as biometric traits in the parthenogenetically-reproducing marbled crayfish Procambarus virginalis Lyko, 2017, all offspring being genetically identical clones. Populations of P. virginalis were reared from eggs tank-bred at four different temperatures (16, 19, 22 and 25 °C) or two different oxygen levels (9.5 and 20 kPa). Then, at Stage 3 and 4 juvenile stages, physiological (heart rate, oxygen consumption) and morphological (carapace length, body mass) variables were measured. Heart rate and oxygen consumption measured at 23 °C showed only small effects of rearing temperature in Stage 3 juveniles, with larger effects evident in older, Stage 4 juveniles. Additionally, coefficients of variation were calculated to compare our data to previously published data on P. virginalis as well as sexually-reproducing crayfish. Comparison revealed that carapace length, body mass and heart rate (but not oxygen consumption) indeed showed lower, yet notable coefficients of variation in clonal crayfish. Yet, despite being genetically identical, significant variation in their morphology and physiology in response to different rearing conditions nonetheless occurred in marbled crayfish. This suggests that epigenetically induced phenotypic variation might play a significant role in asexual but also sexually reproducing species.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated coefficient of variation (CV), gait asymmetry (GA) and phase coordination index (PCI) in cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) patients during single-task walking (STW) and dual-task walking (DTW) and explored the relationship between above parameters with disease severity and cognitive function. METHODS: This cross-sectional study collected cognitive function indices and gait parameters from 23 healthy controls and 94 patients with CSVD during STW and DTW. According to the Fazekas scales, the severity of CSVD valued by white matter hyperintensity (WMH) were divided into control, mild, moderate, severe and control group. MRIs were analyzed for WMHs, CMB, lacunes, etc. RESULTS: The control group showed lower PCI than CSVD patients during STW; no differences were detected among the disease severity groups. During DTW, all four groups exhibited significant differences in PCI and CV. For the moderate and severe groups, coordination and variation significantly differed between the two walking methods. There were correlations between the PCI and GA in the moderate and severe groups (R = 0.376, R = 0.573 during DTW; R = 0.414, R = 0.643 during STW) and no correlations in the control group and mild CSVD group. CONCLUSION: PCI and CV may be vital for detecting the symptoms in the early stage of CSVD disease. We also verified that the PCI could become the bridge across the cognition and motor disorder in CSVD, which was helpful for evaluating clinical symptoms comprehensively.

Kansas State University (KSU) Engineering Extension conducted an abridged evaluation of eight consumer grade digital radon monitors. Using the KSU secondary radon chamber, these devices were exposed to three different radon concentrations for 7 d in average household temperature and relative humidity conditions. The three different radon concentration ranges used were: 12.8 pCi L-1to 15.5 pCi L-1(473.6 Bq m-3-573.5 Bq m-3), 27.7 pCi L-1to 29.4 pCi L-1(1024.9-10 857.8 Bq m-3), and ambient room level average radon concentration of 0.6 pCi L-1(22.2 Bq m-3). The American National Standards Institute/American Academy of Radon Scientists and Technologists Performance Specifications for Instrumentation Systems Designed to Measure Radon Gas in Air (ANSI/AARST MS-PC) (ANSI/AARST MS-PC 2022Performance Specifications for Instrumentation Systems Designed to Measure Radon Gas in Air(AARST Radon Standards)) minimum performance metrics were used to evaluate the accuracy and precision of each model type for each radon concentration tested. The eight different device models performed within the 0 ± 25% requirement for the individual percent error (IPE) for radon concentrations between 27.7 pCi L-1and 29.4 pCi L-1(1024.9-10 857.8 Bq m-3). For radon concentrations between 12.8 pCi L-1and 15.5 pCi L-1(444-592 Bq m-3) seven of the eight monitors fell within the IPE requirement and for ambient room radon concentrations six of the eight monitors fell within the IPE requirement for the ANSI/AARST MS-PC minimum performance requirement (ANSI/AARST MS-PC 2022Performance Specifications for Instrumentation Systems Designed to Measure Radon Gas in Air(AARST Radon Standards)) ranges. All eight device models fell within the ± 15% ANSI/AARST MS-PC minimum performance requirement (ANSI/AARST MS-PC 2022Performance Specifications for Instrumentation Systems Designed to Measure Radon Gas in Air(AARST Radon Standards)) coefficient of variation (CV) range for radon concentrations between 12.8 pCi L-1and 15.5 pCi L-1(444-592 Bq m-3) and for radon concentrations between 27.7 pCi L-1and 29.4 pCi L-1(1024.9-10 857.8 Bq m-3). In the future, evaluating the performance of these models over time to observe their long term accuracy and precision is anticipated.

Ecological sensitivity is an essential indicator for measuring the ecological environment's level, and its assessment results have significant reference value for regional ecological environment protection and resource development and utilization. Taking Xifeng County as the study area, we selected a total of 12 assessment factors in terms of ecological environment, geological environment, and human environment, including average annual rainfall, average annual temperature, average annual wind speed, river density, vegetation coverage, soil erodibility, elevation, slope, geological disaster susceptibility, road density, land use, and night light index, and explored the spatial distribution patterns of ecological sensitivities and the characteristics of the differences in the study area based on the coefficient of variation method and machine learning. The results show that the overall spatial distribution pattern of ecological sensitivity in Xifeng County shows a low sensitivity in the north and a high sensitivity in the south. 41.90% of the regional ecological sensitivity intensity is classified as very high and high sensitivity, mainly distributed in mountainous and hilly areas, while 35.51% is classified as very low and low sensitivity, mainly distributed in plains and low mountainous areas. The assessment results are consistent with the actual situation, enriching the ecological sensitivity assessment methods and models.

A traditional grid model for soil sampling may suffer from poor efficiency and low accuracy. With a nonferrous metal processing plant as the study area, a three-dimensional kriging interpolation model was built based on this plant's preliminary investigation data for arsenic (As), and a detailed survey sampling programme was proposed. The sampling density at the pollution interval of the surface soil was estimated by the coefficient of variation method, and the sampling depth was determined by the pollution interval of the vertical prediction results. The results showed that the encrypted soil sampling distribution optimisation method obtains greater pointing accuracy with fewer points. The sampling accuracy was 87.62% after optimising the depth of pointing. Moreover, this approach could save 66.13% of the sampling costs and 56.93% of the testing costs compared to a full deployment programme. This study provides a new and cost-effective method for predicting the extent of contamination exceedance at a site and provides valuable information to guide post-remediation strategies for contaminated sites.
