RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the variations of parasites in the feces of brown bears Ursus arctos inhabiting the Cantabrian Mountains (NW Spain). A total of 248 bear fecal samples were collected throughout one year, spanning from August 2018 to September 2019, at an approximate frequency of 20 samples per month. The results were analyzed in relation to both the season and the biological activity of the brown bears, i.e., hibernation, mating and hyperphagia. Among the examined samples, eggs of Dicrocoelium dendriticum (32.2%; 95% Confidence Interval: 26.4-38.1), Baylisascaris sp. (44.8%; 38.5-50.9), ancylostomatids (probably belonging to Uncinaria spp.) (16.5%; 11.9-21.1) and Trichuris sp. (1.2%; 0-2.6) were observed. Significant seasonal differences were noted for Baylisascaris and ancylostomatids (χ2 = 21.02, P = 0.001 and χ2 = 34.41, P = 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, the presence of helminth eggs was correlated with the activity phase of the brown bears. Dicrocoelium attained the highest prevalence during the mating phase, while Baylisascaris and ancylostomatids were more frequent during hyperphagia. Notably, the highest egg-output counts for Dicrocoelium and Baylisascaris sp. were recorded during the mating phase and hibernation, respectively, whereas ancylostomatids eggs peaked during hyperphagia. Additionally, variations in egg-output counts were significant for all helminths concerning the season, with the exception of Trichuris sp., and for Dicrocoelium and Baylisascaris sp. According to bear activity. It is concluded that infection by gastrointestinal helminths depends on the season and the biological activity of the bears from the Cantabrian Mountains, and their health status could result influenced.

Our objectives were to determine whether the feedlot-level use of a direct fed microbial (DFM; Lactobacillus animalis LA51 and Propionibacterium freudenreichii PF24; Bovamine Defend®, 2x109 CFU/g) was associated with fecal prevalence and concentration of E. coli O157:H7, and determine pen- and feedlot-level risk factors associated with fecal E. coli O157:H7 prevalence in cattle pens from commercial feedlot operations. Twenty commercial feedlots in Nebraska, ten that included DFM (DFM) and ten that did not (no-DFM), were sampled during the summer of 2017. In each sampling month, 22 pen-floor fecal samples were collected from three pens in each feedlot. Samples were subjected to cultural and molecular procedures for detection of E. coli O157:H7 (immunomagnetic separation, plating on selective media, followed by PCR confirmation) and spiral plating for quantification. A total of 1,320 samples from 180 pens of finishing cattle belonging to 20 feedlots, which were sampled three times throughout a 12-week period, were processed and tested. Across all feedlots and sampling months, mean within-pen prevalence was 13.5% (95% CI = 2.6-47.4%). The association between DFM status and the within-pen prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 depended significantly (p<0.05) on the sampling month. The second sampling month between late July and mid-August, corresponded to the highest within-pen prevalence estimates reported in this study, with no-DFM pens having higher prevalence than DFM pens. After accounting for the DFM status, and based on multivariable analyses, sampling month, average pen body weight and weather conditions were significantly associated with the within-pen fecal prevalence of E. coli O157:H7. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that the use of a DFM containing Lactobacillus animalis LA51 and Propionibacterium freudenreichii PF26 in feedlots showed potential in reducing fecal E. coli O157:H7 prevalence in cattle during times when prevalence peaks.

Background and Aim: Campylobacter spp. are Gram-negative bacilli that are widely recognized as a primary cause of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide. Campylobacteriosis is the disease caused by this pathogen. Recently, greater attention has been given to the prevalence of campylobacteriosis in different animals, including pets. These animals are considered to be significant reservoirs for this zoonosis. In Lebanon, the occurrence of Campylobacter infection is high. Our first-of-its-kind pilot study in Lebanon aimed to estimate the fecal prevalence of Campylobacter species in house dogs. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five rectal swabs were collected from male and female house dogs of different ages, both with or without diarrhea. Samples obtained from the dogs were subjected to qualitative microbiological culture testing and molecular diagnosis by polymerase chain reaction assays after bacterial DNA extraction. Results: Fecal prevalence of Campylobacter spp. in house dogs in this study was 17%. There was a relatively higher prevalence among young females and a significant difference between healthy dogs and those suffering from diarrhea. Conclusion: Campylobacteriosis was found to be prevalent among house dogs in Lebanon, making them potential carriers of Campylobacter species.
