Many studies claim that visual regularities can be learned unconsciously and without explicit awareness. For example in the contextual cueing paradigm, studies often make claims using a standard reasoning based on two results: (1) a reliable response time (RT) difference between repeated vs. new stimulus displays and (2) a close-to-chance sensitivity when participants are asked to explicitly recognize repeated stimulus displays. From this pattern of results, studies routinely conclude that the sensitivity of RT responses is higher than that of explicit responses-an empirical situation we call Indirect Task Advantage (ITA). Many studies further infer from an ITA that RT effects were driven by a form of recognition that exceeds explicit memory: implicit recognition. However, this reasoning is flawed because the sensitivity underlying RT effects is never computed. To properly establish a difference, a sensitivity comparison is required. We apply this sensitivity comparison in a reanalysis of 20 contextual cueing studies showing that not a single study provides consistent evidence for ITAs. Responding to recent correlation-based arguments, we also demonstrate the absence of evidence for ITAs at the level of individual participants. This lack of ITAs has serious consequences for the field: If RT effects can be fully explained by weak but above-chance explicit recognition sensitivity, what is the empirical content of the label "implicit"? Thus, theoretical discussions in this paradigm-and likely in other paradigms using this standard reasoning-require serious reassessment because the current data from contextual cueing studies is insufficient to consider recognition as implicit.
RESUMO
Adults' ability to attain and retain nonnative speech sound categories vary substantially among individuals. While we know that speech-perceptual skills play a role, we know less about how consolidation-related changes in acoustic-phonetic memory contribute to perceptual tasks. The goal of this investigation was to examine contributions of memory and perceptual skills to the perceptual performance on a trained nonnative speech contrast over two days. Twenty-one adult participants (ages 18-24) completed four different experiments. Three of these assessed learning and memory: visual statistical learning (implicit), visual object recognition (explicit), and nonnative (Hindi dental-retroflex) speech-sound training. Participants completed the learning tasks around 8 p.m., and performance was measured shortly after learning and again 12 hours later. On a separate day, participants completed a categorical perception task on a native (/a/-/e/) vowel continuum. Nonnative speech perception was associated with implicit learning performance when both were assessed shortly after learning, and associated with the retention of explicit memory when both were assessed after an overnight delay. Native speech-sounds were at least marginally associated with nonnative speech perception performance on both days, but with a stronger association observed with performance assessed on Day 2. These findings provide preliminary support for the interpretation that speech-sounds are encoded by at least two memory systems in parallel, but that perceptual performance may reflect acoustic-phonetic knowledge learned by different memory systems over time since exposure. Moreover, performance on speech perception tasks in both native and nonnative speech-sounds may rely on similar retrieval mechanisms for long-term storage of speech-sound information.

We have only a partial understanding of how people remember nonverbal information such as melodies. Although once learned, melodies can be retained well over long periods of time, remembering newly presented melodies is on average quite difficult. People vary considerably, however, in their level of success in both memory situations. Here, we examine a skill we anticipated would be correlated with memory for melodies: the ability to accurately reproduce pitches. Such a correlation would constitute evidence that melodic memory involves at least covert sensorimotor codes. Experiment 1 looked at episodic memory for new melodies among nonmusicians, both overall and with respect to the Vocal Memory Advantage (VMA): the superiority in remembering melodies presented as sung on a syllable compared to rendered on an instrument. Although we replicated the VMA, our prediction that better pitch matchers would have a larger VMA was not supported, although there was a modest correlation with memory for melodies presented in a piano timbre. Experiment 2 examined long-term memory for the starting pitch of familiar recorded music. Participants selected the starting note of familiar songs on a keyboard, without singing. Nevertheless, we found that better pitch-matchers were more accurate in reproducing the correct starting note. We conclude that sensorimotor coding may be used in storing and retrieving exact melodic information, but is not so useful during early encounters with melodies, as initial coding seems to involve more derived properties such as pitch contour and tonality.

The mean estimation task, which explicitly asks observers to estimate the mean feature value of multiple stimuli, is a fundamental paradigm in research areas such as ensemble coding and cue integration. The current study uses computational models to formalize how observers summarize information in mean estimation tasks. We compare model predictions from our Fidelity-based Integration Model (FIM) and other models on their ability to simulate observed patterns in within-trial weight distribution, across-trial information integration, and set-size effects on mean estimation accuracy. Experiments show non-equal weighting within trials in both sequential and simultaneous mean estimation tasks. Observers implicitly overestimated trial means below the global mean and underestimated trial means above the global mean. Mean estimation performance declined and stabilized with increasing set sizes. FIM successfully simulated all observed patterns, while other models failed. FIM's information sampling structure provides a new way to interpret the capacity limit in visual working memory and sub-sampling strategies. As a model framework, FIM offers task-dependent modeling for various ensemble coding paradigms, facilitating research synthesis across different studies in the literature.

Perception, representation, and memory of ensemble statistics has attracted growing interest. Studies found that, at different abstraction levels, the brain represents similar items as unified percepts. We found that global ensemble perception is automatic and unconscious, affecting later perceptual judgments regarding individual member items. Implicit effects of set mean and range for low-level feature ensembles (size, orientation, brightness) were replicated for high-level category objects. This similarity suggests that analogous mechanisms underlie these extreme levels of abstraction. Here, we bridge the span between visual features and semantic object categories using the identical implicit perception experimental paradigm for intermediate novel visual-shape categories, constructing ensemble exemplars by introducing systematic variations of a central category base or ancestor. In five experiments, with different item variability, we test automatic representation of ensemble category characteristics and its effect on a subsequent memory task. Results show that observer representation of ensembles includes the group's central shape, category ancestor (progenitor), or group mean. Observers also easily reject memory of shapes belonging to different categories, i.e. originating from different ancestors. We conclude that complex categories, like simple visual form ensembles, are represented in terms of statistics including a central object, as well as category boundaries. We refer to the model proposed by Benna and Fusi (bioRxiv 624239, 2019) that memory representation is compressed when related elements are represented by identifying their ancestor and each one's difference from it. We suggest that ensemble mean perception, like category prototype extraction, might reflect employment at different representation levels of an essential, general representation mechanism.

Surreptitious online measures can reveal the processing of stimuli that people do not report noticing or cannot describe. People seem to glean everything from low-level Gestalt grouping information to semantic meaning from unattended and unreported stimuli, and this information seems capable of influencing performance and of priming semantic judgments. Moore and Egeth (Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 23, 339-352, 1997) provided evidence that judgments about the lengths of two lines were influenced by the grouping of background dots, even when subjects did not notice the pattern the dots formed. Mack and Rock (1998) reported that subjects could be primed to complete a stem with a word to which they were inattentionally blind. In this registered report, we replicated these two classic findings using large online samples (Ns = 260 and 448), finding support for the influence of grouping despite inattentional blindness, but not for word-stem priming.

Contextual cueing can be enhanced by reward. However, there is a debate if reward is associated with the repeated target-distractor configurations or with the repeated target locations that occur in both repeated and new displays. Based on neuroimaging evidence, we hypothesized that reward becomes associated with the target location only in new displays, but not in repeated displays, where the repeated target location is overshadowed by the more salient repeated target-distractor configuration. To test this hypothesis, we varied the reward value associated with the same target location in repeated and new displays. The results confirmed the overshadowing hypothesis in that search facilitation in repeated target-distractor configurations was modulated by the variable value associated with the target location. This effect was observed mainly in early learning.

INTRODUCTION: Unconscious processing of words during general anaesthesia has been suggested. We used the process dissociation procedure (PDP) to test memory performance during sevoflurane and propofol anaesthesia in relation to hypnotic depth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred participants anaesthetised for elective surgery (50 with propofol and 50 with sevoflurane) and 50 non-anaesthetized listened to a list of words. The bispectral index (BIS) of the anaesthetised patients was recorded. Within 36 h after word presentation, memory was assessed using a word stem completion task, based on Buchner's model applied on the PDP. RESULTS: There was evidence of memory for words presented during light (BIS 61-80) (p = 0.001) and adequate (BIS 41-60) (p = 0.008) but not deep anaesthesia (BIS 21-40) (p = 0.09). The PDP showed a significant implicit but not explicit memory contribution (mean total explicit memory scores: 0.04 ±0.07 in all BIS categories; mean implicit memory scores: 0.01 ±0.04, 0.1 ±0.08, and 0.05 ±0.09 at BIS = 21-40, 41-60, and 61-80, respectively). There was a statistically significant difference between the mean implicit memory score (I) of the propofol and sevoflurane group in the BIS category 41-60 in general (p = 0.016), and after incision (IA.I.) (p = 0.005) in particular, with propofol depressing I more than sevoflurane in both cases. Memory performance of nonanaesthetized participants was better, with a higher contribution of explicit and a comparable contribution of implicit memory. CONCLUSIONS: During general anaesthesia, implicit memory persists even in adequate hypnotic states. Sevoflurane affects the implicit memory of adequately anaesthetised subjects less than propofol.
