RESUMO

The widespread adoption of arc additive manufacturing techniques across various industries has advanced the field of SS316L stainless steel manufacturing. It is crucial to acknowledge that different welding modes exert distinct influences on the forming and mechanical performance. This study analyzed the thermal input associated with four specific welding modes in LORCH MIG welding, clarifying the transition dynamics of molten droplets through waveform analysis and examining the resultant effects on microstructure and performance characteristics. The Pulse, Speed-Pulse-XT, and Twin-Pulse modes were found to induce spatter during the manufacturing process, consequently reducing molding efficiency in comparison to the SA-XT mode. Notably, the Twin-Pulse mode, characterized by double-pulse agitation, generated fish scale patterns along the lateral surfaces of the fabricated parts, promoting anisotropic grain growth. This microstructural refinement, compared to single-pulse samples with equivalent thermal input, resulted in enhanced mechanical properties. Nevertheless, the horizontal tensile strength of the three pulse modes was lower than the industrial standard for SA-XT mode and forging. In contrast, the SA-XT mode with an average hardness of 168.1 ± 6.9 HV and a tensile strength of 443.58 ± 5.7 MPa. Therefore, while three pulse modes offer certain microstructural advantages, the SA-XT mode demonstrates superior overall performance.

Composite materials made from aluminum foam are increasingly used in aerospace and automotive industries due to their low density, high energy absorption capacity, and corrosion resistance. Additive manufacturing processes offer several advantages over conventional manufacturing methods, such as the ability to produce significantly more geometrically complex components without the need for expensive tooling. Direct Energy Deposition processes like Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) enable the additive production of near-net-shape components at high build rates. This paper presents a technology for producing aluminum foam structures using WAAM. This paper's focus is on the development of welding wires that are mixed with a foaming agent (TiH2) and produce a foamed weld metal as well as their processing using MIG welding technology.

In this paper, a metal inert gas (MIG) shielded welding method was used for high-quality welding of 6063-T6 aluminum alloy sheet with a thickness of 2.5 mm. The welding process of MIG welding was accurately simulated and the welding temperature field and thermal cycle curve were calculated using a combination of Gaussian body heat source and double ellipsoidal heat source. As the welding current increased from 75 A to 90 A, the reinforcing phase precipitated under the microstructure of the joint gradually became larger and re-solidified into the body, resulting in a reduction in mechanical properties. When the welding current is 85 A, the pitting resistance of weld forming and weld area reaches its optimum. At this time, the tensile strength of the joint is up to 110.9 MPa, the elongation is up to 16.3% and the Vickers Microhardness is up to 46.9 HV.

The tandem metal inert gas (MIG) process uses two wires that are continuously fed through a special welding torch and disbursed to form a single molten pool. Within the contact tip of the modern approach, the wires are electrically insulated from one another. This study identified the effect of welding electrode spacing on the distortion of AA5052 aluminum plates and different mechanical properties including hardness and thermal cycle using grey relational analysis. Plate distortion was subsequently predicted using the grey prediction model GM (1, 6). This research used a pair of 400 mm × 75 mm × 5 mm of AA5052 plates and electrode distances of 18, 27, and 36 mm. The welding current, voltage, welding speed, and argon flow rate were 130 A, 23 V, 7 mm/s, and 17 L/min, respectively. The temperature was measured using a type-K thermocouple at 10, 20, 30, and 40 mm from the center of the weld bead. The smallest distortion at an electrode distance of 27 mm was 1.4 mm. At an electrode distance of 27 mm, the plate may reach a proper peak temperature where the amount of heat input and dissipation rate are similar to those for electrode distances of 18 mm and 36 mm. The highest relative VHN of 57 was found in the BM, while the lowest, 46, was found in the WM, showing good agreement with their respective grain sizes. Six parameters were designed using grey relational analysis (GRA) and subsequently employed in the grey prediction model GM (1, 6). Process evaluation results show that predictions for welding distortions are consistent with actual results, thus, the GM (1, 6) model can be used as a predictive model for welding distortions of 5052 aluminum plates.

In this work, AA1070 aluminium alloy sheets are joined using TIG and MIG welding after three different edge preparations. Shearing, water jet and plasma-cut processes were used to cut sheets, subsequently welded using ER5356 and ER4043 filler metals for TIG and MIG, respectively. Mechanical properties of the obtained sheets were assessed through tensile tests obtaining a relation between sheet preparation and welding tightness. Micro-hardness measures were performed to evaluate the effects of both welding and cutting processes on the micro-hardness of the alloy, highlighting that TIG welding gives rise to inhomogeneous micro-hardness behaviour. After tensile tests, surface fractures were observed employing scanning electron microscopy to highlight the relation between tensile properties and edge preparations. Fractures show severe oxidation in the water jet cut specimens, ductile fractures and gas porosities.

This paper studies the microstructure and mechanical properties of MIG (Melt Inert Gas) lap welded 6005 aluminum alloy plates. Microstructure analysis (OM) of the joint showed that 15~30 µm small grains were observed at the fusion line. Mechanical analysis shows that the small grains are broken by shielding gas and molten pool flow force. Hardness test shows that there is a softening zone (41~43 HV) in HAZ much lower than BM and WZ. The low cycle fatigue test showed that the performance of lap joint decreased sharply, and the fatigue strength of weld decreased significantly, which was only 27.34% of the base metal. The fatigue fracture (SEM) of the weld observed slip band cracking and a large number of brittle fracture characteristics. Using the stress concentration factor Kt for analysis, it was found that the cause of brittle fracture was mostly stress concentration. Lap joint stress concentration model appears in two ways: firstly, at the weld toe, the weld is subjected to eccentric force, secondly, there is a small gap between the two plates at the weld root, which cracks along the direction of 45° of the maximum shear stress.

RESUMO

Nanosecond laser cleaning effectively removes oxide film and dirt from the surface of aluminum body parts for rail transit, as well as improving surface properties. The effect of laser cleaning on the quality of weld was studied in detail for different scanning frequencies and cleaning speeds. The effect of post-weld laser cleaning on weld quality was investigated. After laser cleaning at different parameters, the surface oxygen content was decreased and the surface roughness and surface hardness were increased. Variation of surface oxygen content was related to energy density and spot density. The lowest oxygen content was obtained at 150 W, 100 Hz and 0.8 m/min. Laser-generated craters changed surface morphology and improved surface roughness. The mechanical properties of the welded joints were slightly improved, which relates to a decrease in porosity. The minimum porosity of the laser-cleaned weld was 0.021%. This work provides new ideas for the nanosecond laser cleaning of aluminum alloy and its welding properties.

Low-cost high-resolution metal 3-D printing remains elusive for the scientific community. Low-cost gas metal arc wire (GMAW)-based 3-D printing enables wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) for near net shape applications, but has limited resolution due to the complexities of the arcing process. To begin to monitor and thus control these complexities, the initial designs of the open source GMAW 3-D printer have evolved to include current and voltage monitoring. Building on this prior work, in this study, the design, fabrication and use of the open source arc analyzer is described. The arc analyzer is a multi-sensor monitoring system for quantifying the processing during WAAM, which includes voltage, current, sound, light intensity, radio frequency, and temperature data outputs. The open source arc analyzer is tested here on aluminum WAAM by varying wire feed rate and measuring the resultant changes in the sensor data. Visual inspection and microstructural analysis of the printed samples looking for the presence of porosity are used as the physical indicators of quality. The value of the sensors was assessed and the most impactful sensors were found to be the light and radio frequency sensors, which showed arc extinction events and a characteristic "good weld" peak frequency.

Pure argon metal inert gas (MIG) welding is expected to offer the possibility to obtain high toughness weld joints. However, due to its arc instability and low wettability, it is difficult to apply pure argon MIG to a practical welding structure. In order to solve these problems, an improved MIG welding process with a duplex current feeding (DCF-MIG) mechanism was developed. In the DCF-MIG process, the welding current and the wire feeding speed are independently controlled by an additionally feeding secondary current from a secondary power source. Thereby, DCF-MIG can supply a large current compared to conventional MIG under the same deposition rate. In this study, to consider the influence of the secondary current feeding position of DCF-MIG on droplet heat quantity, droplet heat quantity was measured by calorimetry. As a result, the droplet heat quantity was found to be increased significantly with the increase of the distance between the primary current feeding point and secondary current feeding point. The increase of the droplet heat quantity in the DCF-MIG process had a strong effect on improving bead shape and penetration. The droplet heat quantity with the effective current value of DCF-MIG was derived from the simplified calculation and the results roughly agreed with the experimental data.

OBJECTIVES: The objective was to quantify the blue-light hazard from gas metal arc welding (GMAW) of aluminum alloys. The exposure level is expected to depend on the welding conditions. Therefore, it is important to identify the blue-light hazard under various welding conditions. METHODS: We experimentally conducted GMAW of aluminum alloys under various welding conditions and measured the spectral radiance of the arcs. The effective blue-light radiance, which the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists has defined to quantify the exposure level of blue light, was calculated from the measured spectral radiance. The maximum acceptable exposure duration per 10000 s for this effective blue-light radiance was calculated. RESULTS: The effective blue-light radiance measured in this study was in the range of 2.9-20.0 W cm-2·sr. The corresponding maximum acceptable exposure duration per 10000 s was only 5.0-34 s, so it is hazardous to view the welding arc. The effective blue-light radiance was higher at higher welding currents than at lower welding currents, when pulsed welding currents were used rather than steady welding currents, and when magnesium was included in the welding materials. CONCLUSIONS: It is very hazardous to view the arcs in GMAW of aluminum alloys. Welders and their helpers should use appropriate eye protection in arc-welding operations. They should also avoid direct light exposure when starting an arc-welding operation.
