With every saccadic eye movement, humans bring new information into their fovea to be processed with high visual acuity. Notably, perception is enhanced already before a relevant item is foveated: During saccade preparation, presaccadic attention shifts to the upcoming fixation location, which can be measured via behavioral correlates such as enhanced visual performance or modulations of sensory feature tuning. The coupling between saccadic eye movements and attention is assumed to be robust and mandatory and considered a mechanism facilitating the integration of pre- and postsaccadic information. However, until recently it had not been investigated as a function of saccade direction. Here, we measured contrast response functions during fixation and saccade preparation in male and female observers and found that the pronounced response gain benefit typically elicited by presaccadic attention is selectively lacking before upward saccades at the group level-some observers even showed a cost. Individual observer's sensitivity before upward saccades was negatively related to their amount of surface area in primary visual cortex representing the saccade target, suggesting a potential compensatory mechanism that optimizes the use of the limited neural resources processing the upper vertical meridian. Our results raise the question of how perceptual continuity is achieved and how upward saccades can be accurately targeted despite the lack of-theoretically required-presaccadic attention.

The ribosomal DNA (rDNA) in Drosophila is found as two additive clusters of individual 35 S cistrons. The multiplicity of rDNA is essential to assure proper translational demands, but the nature of the tandem arrays expose them to copy number variation within and between populations. Here, we discuss means by which a cell responds to insufficient rDNA copy number, including a historical view of rDNA magnification whose mechanism was inferred some 35 years ago. Recent work has revealed that multiple conditions may also result in rDNA loss, in response to which rDNA magnification may have evolved. We discuss potential models for the mechanism of magnification, and evaluate possible consequences of rDNA copy number variation.

Tropical small island developing states (SIDS), with their geographical isolation and limited resources, heavily rely on the fisheries industry for food and revenue. The presence of marine lipophilic phycotoxins (MLPs) poses risks to their economy and human health. To understand the contamination status and potential risks, the Republic of Kiribati was selected as the representative tropical SIDS and 55 species of 256 coral reef fish encompassing multiple trophic levels and feeding strategies were collected to analyze 17 typical MLPs. Our results showed that the potential risks of ciguatoxins were the highest and approximately 62% of fish species may pose risks for consumers. Biomagnification of ciguatoxins was observed in the food web with a trophic magnification factor of 2.90. Brevetoxin-3, okadaic acid, and dinophysistoxin-1 and -2 were first reported, but the risks posed by okadaic acid and dinophysistoxins were found to be negligible. The correlation analysis revealed that fish body size and trophic position are unreliable metrics to indicate the associated risks and prevent the consumption of contaminated fish. The potential risks of MLPs in Kiribati are of concern, and our findings can serve as valuable inputs for developing food safety policies and fisheries management strategies specific to tropical SIDS contexts.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate assessment of invasion depth of early rectal neoplasms is essential for optimal therapy. We aimed to compare three-dimensional endorectal ultrasound (3D-ERUS) with magnification chromoendoscopy (MCE) regarding their accuracy in assessing parietal invasion depth (T). METHODS: Patients with middle and distal rectum neoplasms were prospectively included. Two providers blinded to each other's assessment performed 3D-ERUS and MCE, respectively. The T stage assessed through ERUS was compared to the MCE evaluation. The results were compared to the surgical specimen anatomopathological report. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive (PPV), and negative (NPV) predictive values were calculated for the T stage and for the final therapy (local excision or radical surgery). RESULTS: In 8 years, 70 patients were enrolled, and all underwent both exams. MCE and ERUS showed an accuracy of 94.3% and 85.7%, sensitivity of 83.7 and 93.3%, specificity of 96.4 and 83.6%, PPV of 86.7 and 60.9%, and NPV of 96.4 and 97.9%, respectively. Kappa for T stage assessed through ERUS was 0.64 and 0.83 for MCE. CONCLUSION: MCE and 3D-ERUS had good diagnostic performance, but the endoscopic method had higher accuracy. Both methods reliably assessed lesion extension, circumferential involvement, and distance from the anal verge.

BACKGROUND: Phakic lenses (PIOLs, the most common and only disclosed type being the implantable collamer lens, ICL) are used in patients with large or excessive ametropia in cases where laser refractive surgery is contraindicated. The purpose of this study was to present a strategy based on anterior segment OCT data for calculating the refraction correction (REF) and the change in lateral magnification (ΔM) with ICL implantation. METHODS: Based on a dataset (N = 3659) containing Casia 2 measurements, we developed a vergence-based calculation scheme to derive the REF and gain or loss in ΔM on implantation of a PIOL having power PIOLP. The calculation concept is based on either a thick or thin lens model for the cornea and the PIOL. In a Monte-Carlo simulation considering, all PIOL steps listed in the US patent 5,913,898, nonlinear regression models for REF and ΔM were defined for each PIOL datapoint. RESULTS: The calculation shows that simplifying the PIOL to a thin lens could cause some inaccuracies in REF (up to ½ dpt) and ΔM for PIOLs with high positive power. The full range of listed ICL powers (- 17 to 17 dpt) could correct REF in a range from - 17 to 12 dpt with a change in ΔM from 17 to - 25%. The linear regression considering anterior segment biometric data and the PIOLP was not capable of properly characterizing REF and ΔM, whereas the nonlinear model with a quadratic term for the PIOLP showed a good performance for both REF and ΔM prediction. CONCLUSION: Where PIOL design data are available, the calculation concept should consider the PIOL as thick lens model. For daily use, a nonlinear regression model can properly predict REF and ΔM for the entire range of PIOL steps if a vergence calculation is unavailable.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative analysis of retinal nerve fibers is important for the diagnosis and treatment of optic nerve diseases. Peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) cross-sectional area may give a more accurate quantitative assessment of retinal nerve fibers than RNFL thickness but there have been no previous reports of the peripapillary RNFL cross-sectional area or other parameters. The purpose of the current study was to determine peripapillary RNFL cross-sectional area and its association with other factors in an adult Chinese population. METHODS: RNFL cross-sectional area was measured during peripapillary circular optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan with a diameter of 12° centered on the optic disc. Correlation between RNFL cross-sectional area and other parameters was evaluated by linear regression analysis in a cross-sectional study of an adult Chinese population. RESULTS: A total of 2404 eyes from 2404 subjects were examined. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that larger RNFL cross-sectional area correlated with younger age (p < 0.001), female gender (p = 0.001), no history of diabetes (p = 0.012) and larger optic disc area (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Peripapillary RNFL cross-sectional area is correlated positively with optic disc area, suggesting that eyes with larger optic discs have thicker RNFL. Further studies are needed to confirm whether this correlation is due to differences in the numbers of retinal nerve fibers or other factors.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the difference in anterior chamber depth (ACD) between two eyes among keratoconus patients with binocular very asymmetric ectasia (VAE) and to explore the influencing factors. METHODS: The corneal curvature and ACD in both eyes of patients with VAE were measured by Sirius (version 3.2, CSO, Italy) at the following points: corneal vertex, maximum curvature (apex), and the 1.5 mm, 2.5 mm, and 3.5 mm superior-, inferior-, nasal-, temporal-paracentral from center. The mean pupil power (MPP) and corneal morphology parameters were also measured. Correlations between ACD and curvature and morphology parameters were analyzed by linear regression. RESULTS: 172 eyes of 86 patients (9 to 45 years) were classified into the VAE-N (n = 86) group and the VAE-E group (n = 86) based on the corneal morphology. The central (3.32 ± 0.27 mm versus 3.43 ± 0.29 mm, P < 0.001) and paracentral ACDs increased significantly in the VAE-E group, and the corneal morphology parameters were also significantly higher. The central ACD was significantly correlated with the MPP (r = 0.465), KVf/b (Keratoconus Vertex front/back) (r = 0.306, r = 0.327), and BCVf/b (Baiocchi Calossi Versaci front/back) (r = 0.356, r = 0.416). Linear regression showed good relationships between △ACD and △MPP (R2 = 0.429) and △KVf/b (R2 = 0.504, R2 = 0.536). CONCLUSIONS: The ACD was larger in the VAE-E group. The difference in ACD between the VAE-E and VAE-N groups was significantly correlated with corneal curvature and the extent of corneal elevation, indicating the influences of both the corneal magnification effect and corneal ectasia on ACD.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to identify and describe the available evidence on the effect of magnifying devices (loupe or microscope) on the performance of restorative dental preparations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted according to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines for scoping reviews and registered on the INPLASY database. An electronic search was performed in four databases and Grey literature for articles published until November 2023. Eligibility criteria were determined using the PICOS strategy and comprised studies that evaluated the performance of magnification devices for restorative dental preparations. A bibliographic mapping of the evidence was conducted. RESULTS: Sixteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Most of the studies (n = 12) compared the performance of dental preparations using magnification loupes vs. no magnification. The magnification for loupes and microscopes ranged from 2.5x to 4.0x and 6.4x to 10x, respectively. The use of magnifying loupes improved the performance of restorative preparations in 66.6% of the evaluated studies. However, when the magnifications were compared, the greater magnification provided by microscopes did not improve preparation performance compared to magnification loupes. Regarding the place of publication, the American continent concentrates the most significant number of evidence. CONCLUSIONS: Although evidence for magnification improving the performance of dental preparations has increased over the last decade, basically only in vitro studies (most of which have taken place in the Americas) have been reported in the literature. The evidence suggests that magnification significantly improves restorative preparation performance when compared to non-magnification. However, higher magnifications (e.g., microscopes) do not appear to improve tooth preparation performance compared with lower magnification devices (e.g., magnification loupes). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Available evidence supports that using magnification can improve the performance of restored tooth preparations. However, high magnifications have no advantages over lower magnifications.

OBJECTIVES: Dental imaging plays a key role in the diagnosis and treatment of dental conditions, yet limitations regarding the quality and resolution of dental radiographs sometimes hinder precise analysis. Super-resolution with deep learning refers to a set of techniques used to enhance the resolution of images beyond their original size or quality using deep neural networks instead of traditional image interpolation methods which often result in blurred or pixelated images when attempting to increase resolution. Leveraging advancements in technology, this study aims to enhance the resolution of dental panoramic radiographs, thereby enabling more accurate diagnoses and treatment planning. METHODS: About 1714 panoramic radiographs from 3 different open datasets are used for training (n = 1364) and testing (n = 350). The state of the art 4 different models is explored, namely Super-Resolution Convolutional Neural Network (SRCNN), Efficient Sub-Pixel Convolutional Neural Network, Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network, and Autoencoder. Performances in reconstructing high-resolution dental images from low-resolution inputs with different scales (s = 2, 4, 8) are evaluated by 2 well-accepted metrics Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) and Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR). RESULTS: SSIM spans between 0.82 and 0.98 while PSNR are between 28.7 and 40.2 among all scales and models. SRCNN provides the best performance. Additionally, it is observed that performance decreased when images are scaled with higher values. CONCLUSION: The findings highlight the potential of super-resolution concepts to significantly improve the quality and detail of dental panoramic radiographs, thereby contributing to enhanced interpretability.

Discovered as an apparent pattern, a universal relation between geometry and information called the holographic principle has yet to be explained. This relation is unfolded in the present paper. As it is demonstrated there, the origin of the holographic principle lies in the fact that a geometry of physical space has only a finite number of points. Furthermore, it is shown that the puzzlement of the holographic principle can be explained by a magnification of grid cells used to discretize geometrical magnitudes such as areas and volumes into sets of points. To wit, when grid cells of the Planck scale are projected from the surface of the observable universe into its interior, they become enlarged. For that reason, the space inside the observable universe is described by the set of points whose cardinality is equal to the number of points that constitute the universe's surface.

How variable is the functionally defined structure of early visual areas in human cortex and how much variability is shared between twins? Here we quantify individual differences in the best understood functionally defined regions of cortex: V1, V2, V3. The Human Connectome Project 7T Retinotopy Dataset includes retinotopic measurements from 181 subjects (109 female, 72 male), including many twins. We trained four "anatomists" to manually define V1-V3 using retinotopic features. These definitions were more accurate than automated anatomical templates and showed that surface areas for these maps varied more than threefold across individuals. This threefold variation was little changed when normalizing visual area size by the surface area of the entire cerebral cortex. In addition to varying in size, we find that visual areas vary in how they sample the visual field. Specifically, the cortical magnification function differed substantially among individuals, with the relative amount of cortex devoted to central vision varying by more than a factor of 2. To complement the variability analysis, we examined the similarity of visual area size and structure across twins. Whereas the twin sample sizes are too small to make precise heritability estimates (50 monozygotic pairs, 34 dizygotic pairs), they nonetheless reveal high correlations, consistent with strong effects of the combination of shared genes and environment on visual area size. Collectively, these results provide the most comprehensive account of individual variability in visual area structure to date, and provide a robust population benchmark against which new individuals and developmental and clinical populations can be compared.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Areas V1, V2, and V3 are among the best studied functionally defined regions in human cortex. Using the largest retinotopy dataset to date, we characterized the variability of these regions across individuals and the similarity between twin pairs. We find that the size of visual areas varies dramatically (up to 3.5×) across healthy young adults, far more than the variability of the cerebral cortex size as a whole. Much of this variability appears to arise from inherited factors, as we find very high correlations in visual area size between monozygotic twin pairs, and lower but still substantial correlations between dizygotic twin pairs. These results provide the most comprehensive assessment of how functionally defined visual cortex varies across the population to date.

BACKGROUND: White light (WL) and weak-magnifying (WM) endoscopy are both important methods for diagnosing gastric neoplasms. This study constructed a deep-learning system named ENDOANGEL-MM (multi-modal) aimed at real-time diagnosing gastric neoplasms using WL and WM data. METHODS: WL and WM images of a same lesion were combined into image-pairs. A total of 4201 images, 7436 image-pairs, and 162 videos were used for model construction and validation. Models 1-5 including two single-modal models (WL, WM) and three multi-modal models (data fusion on task-level, feature-level, and input-level) were constructed. The models were tested on three levels including images, videos, and prospective patients. The best model was selected for constructing ENDOANGEL-MM. We compared the performance between the models and endoscopists and conducted a diagnostic study to explore the ENDOANGEL-MM's assistance ability. RESULTS: Model 4 (ENDOANGEL-MM) showed the best performance among five models. Model 2 performed better in single-modal models. The accuracy of ENDOANGEL-MM was higher than that of Model 2 in still images, real-time videos, and prospective patients. (86.54 vs 78.85%, P = 0.134; 90.00 vs 85.00%, P = 0.179; 93.55 vs 70.97%, P < 0.001). Model 2 and ENDOANGEL-MM outperformed endoscopists on WM data (85.00 vs 71.67%, P = 0.002) and multi-modal data (90.00 vs 76.17%, P = 0.002), significantly. With the assistance of ENDOANGEL-MM, the accuracy of non-experts improved significantly (85.75 vs 70.75%, P = 0.020), and performed no significant difference from experts (85.75 vs 89.00%, P = 0.159). CONCLUSIONS: The multi-modal model constructed by feature-level fusion showed the best performance. ENDOANGEL-MM identified gastric neoplasms with good accuracy and has a potential role in real-clinic.

We investigated the trophic magnification potential of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in a terrestrial food web by using a chemical activity-based approach, which involved normalizing concentrations of PFAS in biota to their relative biochemical composition in order to provide a thermodynamically accurate basis for comparing concentrations of PFAS in biota. Samples of hawk eggs, songbird tissues, and invertebrates were collected and analyzed for concentrations of 18 perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) and for polar lipid, neutral lipid, total protein, albumin, and water content. Estimated mass fractions of PFCA C8-C11 and PFSA C4-C8 predominantly occurred in albumin within biota samples from the food web with smaller estimated fractions in polar lipids > structural proteins > neutral lipids and insignificant amounts in water. Estimated mass fractions of longer-chained PFAS (i.e., C12-C16) mainly occurred in polar lipids with smaller estimated fractions in albumin > structural proteins > neutral lipids > and water. Chemical activity-based TMFs indicated that PFNA, PFDA, PFUdA, PFDoA, PFTrDA, PFTeDA, PFOS, and PFDS biomagnified in the food web; PFOA, PFHxDA, and PFHxS did not appear to biomagnify; and PFBS biodiluted. Chemical activity-based TMFs for PFCA C8-C11 and PFSA C4-C8 were in good agreement with corresponding TMFs derived with concentrations normalized to only total protein in biota, suggesting that concentrations normalized to total protein may be appropriate proxies of chemical activity-based TMFs for PFAS, which predominantly partition to albumin. Similarly, TMFs derived with concentrations normalized to albumin may be suitable proxies of chemical activity-based TMFs for longer-chained PFAS, which predominantly partition to polar lipids.

The ban/elimination of legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has led to a dramatic increase in the production and use of various emerging PFASs over the past decade. However, trophodynamics of many emerging PFASs in aquatic food webs remain poorly understood. In this study, samples of seawaters and marine organisms including 15 fish species, 21 crustacean species, and two cetacean species were collected from the northern South China Sea (SCS) to investigate the trophic biomagnification potential of legacy and emerging PFASs. Bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide was found in seawater via suspect screening (concentration up to 1.50 ng/L) but not in the biota, indicating its negligible bioaccumulation potential. A chlorinated perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) analytical interfering compound was identified with a predicted formula of C14H23O5SCl6- (most abundant at m/z = 514.9373). Significant trophic magnification was observed for 22 PFASs, and the trophic magnification factors of cis- and trans-perfluoroethylcyclohexane sulfonate isomers (1.92 and 2.25, respectively) were reported for the first time. Perfluorohexanoic acid was trophic-magnified, possibly attributed to the PFAS precursor degradation. The hazard index of PFOS was close to 1, implying a potential human health risk via dietary exposure to PFASs in seafood on the premise of continuous PFAS discharge to the SCS.

Information on pollutant trophodynamics can be crucial for public health, as contaminated food consumption may lead to deleterious effects. This study was performed in Puruzinho Lake, a remote body of water in the Brazilian Amazon from which a riparian human population obtains an important part of its animal protein intake. Samples from 92 individuals, comprising 13 species and four trophic guilds (iliophagous, planktivorous, omnivorous, and piscivorous fish) were analysed for the determination of trace elements (Fe, Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, Ca, Sr, Cd, Sn, Tl and Pb) and methylmercury concentrations. Samples from the same individuals had already been analysed for stable isotope (SI) measurements (δ13C and δ15N) in a previous investigation and the SI data have been statistically treated with those generated in this study for the evaluation of trophic dynamics of contaminants. Methylmercury was the only analyte that biomagnified, presenting TMF values of 4.65 and 4.55 for total and resident ichthyofauna, respectively. Trace elements presented either trophic dilution or independence from the trophic position, constituting a behaviour that was coherent with that found in the scientific literature. The similarity between Ni behaviour through the trophic web to that of essential elements contributes to the discussion on the essentiality of this metal to fish. Considering the Non-cancer Risk Assessment, the calculated Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) values were higher than 1.0 for all analysed individuals for methylmercury, as well as for only one individual for nickel. No other analyte rendered THQ values higher than 1.0.

BACKGROUND: Surgical planning depends on precise preoperative assessment of the radiological extent of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Despite different modalities used, reoperation rates for DCIS due to involved margins are high. PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of additional imaging views (spot magnification, tomosynthesis) on surgical reoperation rate of DCIS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The retrospective single institute study includes 157 patients with biopsy-proven pure DCIS seen on mammogram as microcalcifications and treated with breast-conserving surgery. Patients have been divided into three groups according to additional imaging performed: spot magnification, tomosynthesis, and none. All breast images (mammograms, spot magnification, tomosynthesis) were reviewed and the maximum extent of pathological microcalcifications was recorded. Radiological size was compared to final histopathological size. Reoperation rate due to inadequate margins was recorded. RESULTS: Reoperation rates (25%) due to inadequate margins were as follows: spot (18%), tomosynthesis (27%), none (31%); P = 0.488. Spot magnification, tomosynthesis, and digital zoom of full-field digital mammography predicted similarly the final histopathological size. Reoperation group had a significantly greater preoperative radiological median size (26 mm vs. 20 mm; P = 0.014) as well as median size of disease on final histopathological report (29 mm vs. 14 mm; P < 0.001). Discrepancy between radiological and final histopathological size became greater with increasing DCIS extent. CONCLUSION: The main factors for reoperations are DCIS size and discordance between radiological and histopathological sizes. The use of additional imaging views (spot magnification, tomosynthesis) did not reduce reoperation rate.

The resolution of the naked eye has been a challenge for the neurosurgical endeavor since the very first attempts of cranial surgery, and advances have been achieved over the centuries, driven by a synergism between the application of emerging technology into the surgical environment and the expansion of the capabilities of neurosurgery. The understanding of the principles of the optical properties of lenses by Abbè (1840-1905) led to the introduction of loupes in the surgical practice, increasing the visual performance during macroscopic procedures. Modern neurosurgery began with the possibility of illumination and magnification of the surgical field as provided by the microscope. Pioneering contributions from Donaghy and Yasargil opened the way to the era of minimalism with reduction of operative corridors and surgical trauma through the adoption of the microsurgical technique. Almost at the same time, engineering mirabilia of Hopkins in terms of optics and lenses allowed for introduction of rigid and flexible endoscopes as a viable tool in neurosurgery. Nowadays, neurosurgeons are aware of and confident using effective and modern tools of visualization in their armamentarium. Herein we present a cogent review of the evolution of visualization tools in neurosurgery, with a special glimpse into the current development and future achievements.

BACKGROUND: Gross total resection, when possible, is the first crucial treatment for high-grade gliomas, as it has been demonstrated to be associated with longer survival. Different intraoperative tools, such as neuronavigation, fluorescent agents, and intra-operative ultrasound, have been developed to help neurosurgeons to extend the resection. METHODS: We describe the high-magnification microsurgery technique used during the first surgical removal for high-grade gliomas. We illustrate the key anatomical "markers" of normal brain parenchyma, which guide the surgery. CONCLUSION: High-magnification microsurgery is an anatomically based approach that allows the identification of key anatomical "markers" of normal brain parenchyma in order to resect high-grade gliomas safely and effectively.

BACKGROUND: The observation of tympanic membrane displacement (TMD) opens up the possibility of indirect intracranial pressure (ICP) estimation. In this study, we applied a phase-based video motion magnification (VMM) algorithm to reveal spontaneous pulse TMD waveforms (spTMD) and compare them with invasively measured ICP in patients with intracranial pathologies. METHODS: Nine adults (six traumatic brain injury and three aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage; median age 44 (29-53) years admitted to the intensive care unit of Wroclaw Medical University between October 2021 and October 2022 with implanted ICP sensors were included in this retrospective study. Video recordings of the tympanic membrane were performed using a portable otoscope with a video camera and analysed by a custom-written VMM algorithm. ICP was monitored using intraparenchymal sensors and arterial blood pressure (ABP) was measured in the radial arterial lines. ICP, ABP, and spTMD videos were captured simultaneously. The pulse amplitudes of ICP (Amp_ICP), ABP (Amp_ABP) and spTMD (Amp_spTMD) were estimated using fast Fourier transform within the heart rate (HR)-related frequency range. RESULTS: Amp_spTMD was significantly correlated with mean ICP (rS = 0.73; p = 0.025) and with Amp_ICP (rS = 0.88; p = 0.002). Age was not a significant moderator of this association. There were no significant relationships between Amp_spTMD and either mean ABP, HR, or Amp_ABP. CONCLUSIONS: The study suggests that Amp_spTMD increases with the increase in mean ICP and Amp_ICP. Estimation of Amp_spTMD using the VMM algorithm has the potential to allow for non-invasive detection of the risk of elevated ICP; however, further investigation in a larger group of patients is required.

Chromium (Cr) pollution caused by the discharge of industrial wastewater into rivers poses a significant threat to the environment, aquatic and human life, as well as agricultural crops irrigated by these rivers. This paper employs artificial intelligence (AI) to introduce a new framework for modeling the fate, transport, and estimation of Cr from its point of discharge into the river until it is absorbed by agricultural products. The framework is demonstrated through its application to the case study River, which serves as the primary water resource for tomato production irrigation in Mashhad city, Iran. Measurements of Cr concentration are taken at three different river depths and in tomato leaves from agricultural lands irrigated by the river, allowing for the identification of bioaccumulation effects. By employing boundary conditions and smart algorithms, various aspects of control systems are evaluated. The concentration of Cr in crops exhibits an accumulative trend, reaching up to 1.29 µg/g by the time of harvest. Using data collected from the case study and exploring different scenarios, AI models are developed to estimate the Cr concentration in tomato leaves. The tested AI models include linear regression (LR), neural network (NN) classifier, and NN regressor, yielding goodness-of-fit values (R2) of 0.931, 0.874, and 0.946, respectively. These results indicate that the NN regressor is the most accurate model, followed by the LR, for estimating Cr levels in tomato leaves.
