OBJECTIVE: Flavored non-cigarette tobacco product (NCTP) use is common among US adult tobacco users. To update the estimates of use patterns of flavored NCTPs, this study assessed current NCTP use among adults by flavor use and flavor categories from 2010 to 2019. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2010-2019 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey to estimate the weighted proportion of adult NCTP users by flavor use across survey waves. Flavor use was defined as past 30-day use of any menthol/mint or fruit/other flavors. We used the 2018-2019 data to examine the differences in demographic characteristics and tobacco use patterns among users of menthol/mint or fruit/other flavors compared to exclusive users of tobacco flavor, by product type. RESULTS: Compared to 2014-2015, electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) users were more likely (79.0% vs. 66.6%, p < 0.001) to report flavor use in 2018-2019, whereas cigar (26.9% vs. 31.2%, p = 0.030) and pipe (56.3% vs. 65.5%, p = 0.015) smokers were less likely to report flavor use in 2018-2019. In 2018-2019, the most prevalent flavor categories were exclusive use of tobacco flavor among cigar (73.1%) and smokeless tobacco (48.3%) users, and use of fruit/other flavors among ENDS (64.9%) and pipe (48.4%) users. Flavored users were more likely to be young adults aged 18-24 years (cigars, ENDS, smokeless tobacco) and Non-Hispanic Black or Hispanic persons (cigars, ENDS, pipes) compared to tobacco-flavored users. CONCLUSIONS: Flavored product use increased among adult ENDS users but decreased among cigar and pipe smokers. These findings could inform tobacco regulatory efforts concerning flavored NCTPs.

PURPOSE: This study estimated the prevalence of and factors associated with secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, and assessed attitudes and knowledge about SHS among pregnant women in Cairo, Egypt. METHODS: Pregnant women in the third trimester were recruited to participate in a survey assessing tobacco smoking and SHS exposure during their current pregnancy. Participants were recruited from three antenatal clinics in Cairo, Egypt, from June 2015 to May 2016. We examined differences in sociodemographic characteristics and SHS exposure, attitudes, and knowledge by smoking/SHS status. We used multivariable ordinary least squares regression to examine the association between husbands' smoking and pregnant women's mean daily hours of SHS exposure, adjusting for women's smoking status, age group, education, and urban (vs. suburban/rural) residence. RESULTS: Of two hundred pregnant women aged 16-37 years, about two-thirds (69%) had a husband who smoked tobacco. During their current pregnancy, most women reported being non-smokers (71%), and 38% of non-smokers reported being SHS-exposed. Non-smokers exposed to SHS tended to live in more rural areas and have husbands who smoked in the home. In adjusted analyses, having a husband who smoked was significantly associated with a greater mean number of hours of SHS exposure per day exposed, and this difference was driven by husbands who smoked in the home (p < 0.001). Women in the SHS-exposed group were less likely than other groups to agree that SHS exposure was harmful to their own or their future child's health; however, all groups agreed that SHS was harmful to newborn health. CONCLUSION: Among our sample of pregnant women in Cairo, Egypt, there was a high rate of SHS exposure as well as misconceptions about the safety of SHS exposure to a developing fetus. Our findings suggest a need for targeted education and gender-sensitive messaging about SHS exposure, along with improved enforcement of existing tobacco control policies.


Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) remains a major contributor to health problems in pregnant women and their children. Using a survey, this study sought to estimate how many pregnant women in Cairo Metropolitan Area, Egypt, were exposed to SHS and the factors contributing to that exposure, and to assess attitudes towards SHS. During their current pregnancy, 38% of non-smokers reported being exposed to SHS. Non-smokers exposed to SHS tended to live in more rural areas and have husbands who smoked in the home. In newly commissioned drinking-water polyethylene (PE) pipes, biofilm develops on the inner pipe surface. The microbial community composition from colonization to the establishment of mature biofilms is less known, including the effect on the distributed water quality. Biofilm development was followed through 1.5 years in PE-pipe side streams at two locations of a full-scale, non-chlorinated drinking-water distribution system (leaving a waterworks versus 5-6 km from a waterworks) along with inlet and outlet water quality. Mature biofilms were established after ∼8-9 months, dominated by Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Saccharibacteria (61-93% relative abundance), with a higher diversity (OTUs/Shannon Index/16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing) in pipes in the far end of the distribution system. Comamonadaceae, and specifically Aquabacterium (>30% of reads), dominated young (∼1.5-month-old) biofilms. Young biofilms were linked to increased microbiological counts in drinking water (HPC/ATP/qPCR), while the establishment of mature biofilms led to a drop in HPC and benefited the water quality, highlighting the importance of optimizing commissioning procedures for rapidly achieving mature and stable biofilms.

This study investigates the methods for controlling porosity in thermal pipes manufactured using selective laser melting (SLM) technology. Experiments conducted include water permeability tests and surface roughness measurements, which are complemented by SEM image ML-based analysis for pore recognition. The results elucidate the impact of SLM printing parameters on water permeability. Specifically, an increase in hatch and point distances leads to a linear rise in permeability, while higher laser power diminishes permeability. Using machine learning (ML) techniques, precise pore identification on SEM images depicting surface microstructures of the samples is achieved. The average percentage of the surface area containing detected pores for microstructure samples printed with laser parameters (laser power (W) _ hatch distance (µm) _ point distance (µm)) 175_ 80_80 was found to be 5.2%, while for 225_120_120, it was 4.2%, and for 275_160_160, it was 3.8%. Pore recognition was conducted using the Haar feature-based method, and the optimal patch size was determined to be 36 pixels on monochrome images of microstructures with a magnification of 33×, which were acquired using a Leica S9 D microscope.

Ferromagnetic pipes are widely used in the oil and gas industry. They are subject to cracks due to corrosion, pressure, and fatigue. It is significant to detect cracks for the safety of pipes. A residual magnetic field testing (RMFT) system is developed for crack detection in ferromagnetic pipes. Based on this background, a detection probe based on an array of tunneling magneto-resistive (TMR) sensors and permanent magnets is exploited. The probe is able to partially magnetize the pipe wall and collect magnetic signals simultaneously. First, a theoretical analysis of RMFT is presented. The physics principle of RMFT is introduced, and a finite element model is built. In the finite element simulations, the effects of the crack length and depth on the RMFT signal are analyzed, and the signal characteristics are selected to represent the crack size. Next, the validated experiments are conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed RMFT method in this paper.

In the management of urban drainage networks, great interest has been generated in the removal of sediments from sewer systems. The unsteady three-dimensional (3D) flow and turbulent coherent structures surrounding sediment reduction plates in a sewer system are investigated by means of the detached-eddy simulation (DES). Particular emphasis is given to detailing the instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields within the grooves, along with an examination of the three-dimensional, long-term, average flow structure at a Reynolds number of approximately 105. Velocity vectors demonstrate continuous flapping of the flow on the groove wall, periodically interacting with ejections of positive and negative vorticity originating from the grooves. The interaction between the three-dimensional groove flow and the shear flow leads to the downstream transport of patches of positive and negative vorticity, which significantly influence sediment transport. The high-velocity shear flows and strong vortices generated in undulating topography, as identified by the Q-criteria, are the key factors contributing to the efficient sediment reduction capabilities of the sediment reduction plates. The sediment reduction plates with partially enclosed structures exhibit low sedimentation rates in grooves on the plate, a broader acceleration region, and a lesser impact on the flow capacity. The results improve the understanding of the hydrodynamics and turbulent coherent structures surrounding the sediment reduction plates while elucidating the driving factors behind the enhancement of sediment scouring and suspension capacities. These results indicate that the redesign of the plates as partially enclosed structures contributes to further improving their sediment reduction performance.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The prevailing view from the areocladogenesis of molecular phylogenies is that the iconic South African Cape Proteaceae (subfamily Proteoideae) arrived from Australia across the Indian Ocean in the Upper Cretaceous (100‒65 million years ago, Ma). Since fossil pollen indicates that the family probably arose in North-West Africa during the early Cretaceous, an alternative view is that it migrated to the Cape from North-Central Africa. The plan therefore was to collate fossil pollen records throughout Africa to determine if they are consistent with an African (para-autochthonous) origin for the Cape Proteaceae, and to seek further support from other paleo-disciplines. METHODS: Palynology (identity, date and location of records), molecular phylogeny and chronogram preparation, biogeography of plate tectonics, and paleo-atmospheric and ocean circulation models. KEY RESULTS: Our collation of the rich assemblage of Proteaceae palynomorphs stretching back to 107 Ma (Triorites africaensis) in North-West Africa showed its progressive overland migration to the Cape by 75‒65 Ma. No key palynomorphs recorded in Australia-Antarctica have morphological affinities with African fossils but specific clade assignment of the preMiocene records is not currently possible. The Cape Proteaceae encompass three molecular-based clades (tribes) whose most-recent apparent ancestors are sisters to those in Australia. However, our chronogram shows that the major Adenanthos/Leucadendron-related clade, originating 54‒34 Ma, would have 'arrived' too late as species with Proteaceae affinities were already present ~20 My earlier. The Franklandia/Protea-related clade arose 118‒81 Ma so its distinctive pollen should have been the foundation for the scores of palynomorphs recorded at 100‒80 Ma but it was not. Also, the prevailing winds and ocean currents trended away from South Africa rather than towards, as the 'out-of-Australia' hypothesis requires. Based on the evidence assembled here, we list three points favouring an Australian origin and nine against; four points favouring an Antarctic origin and seven against; and nine points favouring a North-Central African origin and three against. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that a gradual migration of the Proteaceae from North-Central Africa southeast→south→southwest to the Cape and surrounds occurred via adaptation and speciation during the period 90‒70 Ma. We caution that incorrect conclusions may be drawn from literal interpretations of molecular phylogenies that neglect the fossil record and do not recognize the possible confounding effects of selection under matched environments leading to parallel evolution and extinction of bona fide sister clades.

The detection and location of pipeline leakage can be deduced from the time arrival leak signals measured by acoustic sensors placed at the pipe. Ongoing research in this field is primarily focused on refining techniques for accurately estimating the time delays. This enhancement predominantly revolves around the application of advanced signal processing methods. Additionally, researchers are actively immersed in the utilization of machine learning approaches on vibro-acoustic data files, to determine the presence or absence of leaks. Less attention has been given to evaluating the sensitivity, performance, and overall effectiveness of these sensors in leak detection; although acoustic methods have been successfully used for leak detection in metallic pipes, they are less effective in plastic pipes due to the high attenuation of leak noise signals. The primary thrust of this research centers on identifying sensors that not only possess sensitivity but also exhibit high efficiency. To accomplish this goal, we conducted an exhaustive evaluation of the performance of three distinct categories of acoustic sensors employed for detecting water leaks in plastic pipes: specifically, lead zirconate titanate (PZT) sensors, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) sensors, and surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors. Our evaluation encompassed the performance of PVDF and SAW sensors in leak detection, comparing them to PZT sensors under a variety of conditions, including different leak sizes, flow rates, and distances from the leak. The results showed that all three sensors, when they were placed in the same position, were able to detect water leaks in plastic pipes with different sensitivities. For small leaks (1 mm, 2 mm), the PVDF sensor showed the greatest sensitivity (0.4 dB/L/h, 0.33 dB/L/h), followed by the SAW sensor (0.16 dB/L/h, 0.14 dB/L/h), and finally the PZT (0.13 dB/L/h, 0.12 dB/L/h). Similarly, for larger leaks (4 mm, 10 mm), the PVDF sensor continued to show superior sensitivity (0.2 dB/L/h, 0.17 dB/L/h), followed by the SAW sensor (0.13 dB/L/h, 0.11), and finally the PZT sensor (0.12 dB/L/h, 0.1 dB/L/h), outperforming the PZT sensor. This suggests that SAW and PVDF sensors, have the potential to serve as valuable, cost-effective alternatives to traditional commercial leak noise transducers. The outcomes of this comparative study involving three acoustic sensors hold the potential to advance the development of robust and dependable systems for the detection of water leaks in plastic pipelines.

In order to ensure the safe operation of buried polyethylene pipelines adjacent to blasting excavations, controlling the effects of blasting vibration loads on the pipelines is a key concern. Model tests on buried polyethylene pipelines under blasting loads were designed and implemented, the vibration velocity and dynamic strain response of the pipelines were obtained using a TC-4850 blast vibrometer and a UT-3408 dynamic strain tester, and the distribution characteristics of blast vibration velocity and dynamic strain were analyzed based on the experimental data. The results show that the blast load has the greatest effect on the circumferential strain of the polyethylene pipe, and the dynamic strain response is greatest at the section of the pipe nearest to the blast source. Pipe peak vibration velocity (PPVV), ground peak particle velocity (GPPV), and the peak dynamic strain of the pipe were highly positively correlated, which verifies the feasibility of using GPPV to characterize pipeline vibration and strain level. According to the failure criteria and relevant codes, combined with the analysis of experimental results, the safety threshold of additional circumferential stress on the pipeline is 1.52 MPa, and the safety control vibration speed of the ground surface is 21.6 cm/s.

Both microplastic and biofilm are contamination sources in drinking water, but their integrated impacts on water quality have been rarely studied, especially in drinking water distribution pipes with complex hydraulic conditions. This study explored the impacts of hydraulic conditions (0-2 m/s) on microplastic biofilm (MP-BM) development, shear stresses distribution, and microbial community structures. The research was conducted for two weeks using a pilot test device to simulate practical water pipes. The following were the primary conclusions: (1) According to morphology analysis, clusters (>5 µm) significantly increased in the plastisphere when the flow velocity ranged from 0.55 m/s to 0.95 m/s, and average size of clusters decreased when the flow velocity ranged from 1.14 m/s to 1.40 m/s (2) Characteristics of MP-BM impact shear stress on both plastisphere and pipe wall biofilm. Shear stresses were positively correlated with flow velocity, number of MP-BM, and size of MP-BM, while negatively correlated with diameters of pipes. (3) 31 genera changed strictly and monotonously with the fluid velocity, accounting for 15.42%. Opportunistic pathogens in MP-BM such as Sediminibacterium, Curvibacter, and Flavobacterium were more sensitive to hydraulic conditions. Moreover, microplastics (<100 µm) deserve more attention to avoid human ingestion and to prevent mechanical damage and bio-chemical risks.

Rationale: The Southeast Asian tuberculosis burden is high, and it remains unclear if urban indoor air pollution in this setting is exacerbating the epidemic. Objectives: To determine the associations of latent tuberculosis with common urban indoor air pollution sources (secondhand smoke, indoor motorcycle emissions, and cooking) in Southeast Asia. Methods: We enrolled child household contacts of patients with microbiologically confirmed active tuberculosis in Vietnam, from July 2017 to December 2019. We tested children for latent tuberculosis and evaluated air pollution exposures with questionnaires and personal aerosol sampling. We tested hypotheses using generalized estimating equations. Measurements and Main Results: We enrolled 72 patients with tuberculosis (27% with cavitary disease) and 109 of their child household contacts. Latent tuberculosis was diagnosed in 58 (53%) household contacts at baseline visit. Children experienced a 2.56-fold increased odds of latent tuberculosis for each additional household member who smoked (95% confidence interval, 1.27-5.16). Odds were highest among children exposed to indoor smokers and children <5 years old exposed to household smokers. Each residential floor above street-level pollution decreased the odds of latent tuberculosis by 36% (adjusted odds ratio, 0.64; 95% confidence interval, 0.42-0.96). Motorcycles parked inside children's homes and cooking with liquid petroleum gas compared with electricity increased the odds of latent tuberculosis, whereas kitchen ventilation decreased the effect, but these findings were not statistically significant. Conclusions: Common urban indoor air pollution sources were associated with increased odds of latent tuberculosis infection in child household contacts of patients with active tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Exposure to lead can harm a child's health, including damage to the nervous system, delayed growth, hearing loss, and many other adverse health effects, as well as implications for social, economic, educational and social well-being. Lead exposure in children is still a concern and cases require public health management to find the exposure source and interrupt the exposure pathway. Housing characteristics can indicate the presence of lead-contaminated paint and leaded water supply pipes. We aimed to explore the relationship between housing characteristics and elevated blood lead concentration (BLC) in children in England. METHODS: We used a retrospective cohort design and included all cases of lead exposure in children reported to the UK Health Security Agency between 2014 and 2020 via surveillance. A case was a child aged under 16 years, resident in England, BLC of ≥ 0.48 µmol/L (10 µg/dL) and referred for public health management. We collected case demographic details and housing characteristics (age and type). We explored associations between elevated BLC and risk factors, using generalised linear mixed effects models and compared cases' housing type to that expected nationally. RESULTS: Two hundred and sixty-six out of 290 cases met the case definition. There was no difference in BLCs between genders, age groups, deprivation, and housing type. After adjusting for reporting source, housing age and type, cases residing in housing built pre-1976 had a BLC of 0.32 (95%CI 0.02, 0.63) µmols/L (6.63 (95%CI 0.42, 13.0) µg/dL) higher than cases living in housing built after this time. Cases were 1.68 times more likely to be living in terraced housing (housing adjoined to one another) than other children and less likely to live in apartments and detached properties. CONCLUSION: This study suggests an association between housing characteristics and BLC in children. Housing age and type may act as a proxy for lead exposure risk through exposure to leaded paint, lead water pipes, and lead contaminated dust from indoor and outdoor sources. Public health action should consider targeting families more at risk in older housing by raising awareness of the potential presence of lead pipes and paint. Interventions should include working with wider stakeholders including other housing and environmental professionals, the private sector, as well as parents and carers.

Due to the advantages of economics, safety, and efficiency, vision-based analysis techniques have recently gained conspicuous advancements, enabling them to be extensively applied for autonomous constructions. Although numerous studies regarding the defect inspection and condition assessment in underground sewer pipelines have presently emerged, we still lack a thorough and comprehensive survey of the latest developments. This survey presents a systematical taxonomy of diverse sewer inspection algorithms, which are sorted into three categories that include defect classification, defect detection, and defect segmentation. After reviewing the related sewer defect inspection studies for the past 22 years, the main research trends are organized and discussed in detail according to the proposed technical taxonomy. In addition, different datasets and the evaluation metrics used in the cited literature are described and explained. Furthermore, the performances of the state-of-the-art methods are reported from the aspects of processing accuracy and speed.

RESUMO

The movement capabilities of snake robots allow them to be applied in a variety of applications. We realized a snake robot climbing in crowded pipes. In this paper, we implement a sinusoidal curve control method that allows the snake robot to move faster. The control method is composed of a hybrid force-position controller that allows the snake robot to move more stably. We conducted experiments to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the proposed method is stable and effective compared to the previous control method that we had implemented in the snake robot.

As is already known, solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is a widely accepted technology for power generation worldwide. However, it is scientifically proven that its power output decreases with an increase in the temperature of the PV module. Such an important issue is controlled by adopting a number of cooling mechanisms for the PV module. The present experimental study assesses the effect of a fanless CPU heat pipe on the performance of a PV module. The experiment was conducted in June in real weather conditions in Yekaterinburg, Russian Federation. The comparative analysis of two PV panels (i.e., cooled, and uncooled) based on the electrical energy, exergy performance, economic, embodied energy and energy payback (5E) for the two systems is presented and discussed. The key results from the study are that the average temperature reduction from the cooling process is 6.72 °C. The average power for the cooled panel is 11.39 W against 9.73 W for the uncooled PV panel; this represents an increase of 1.66 W for the cooled module. Moreover, the average improvements in the electrical efficiency, and embodied energy recorded for a cooled PV panel 2.98%, and 438.52 kWh, respectively. Furthermore, the calculations of the levelized cost of energy (LCE) for the cooled PV panel indicate that it can range from 0.277-0.964 USD/kWh, while that for the uncooled PV panel also ranges from 0.205-0.698 USD/kWh based on the number of days of operation of the plant.

Determination of the amount (i.e., area and volume) of soil losses due to erosional landforms, especially collapsed pipes, plays a considerable role in different decision-making approaches. Further, mapping the spatial distribution and predicting the volumetric and areal losses of collapsed pipes (CPs) are essential for supporting ecosystem health. The study was conducted in relation to the area and volume of CPs and their related covariables. It focused on the estimation of soil losses due to collapsed pipes using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images as well as field covariates at the Chatal Watershed, Golestan Province, Iran. A total of 481 soil samples were collected from homogeneous units with an area of approximately 1,410 ha. The potential relationship between the area/volume of collapsed pipes and land use, several topographic attributes (i.e., altitude, slope, and aspect), and soil properties, including soil stability, soil organic matter, clay, silt, and sand contents were analyzed using five distance-based methods (i.e., kernel density (KD), average nearest neighbor (ANN), spatial autocorrelation, hotspot analysis (HSA), and ordinary least square (OLS) analysis. The average nearest neighbor (Ratio = 0.12, Z score = -20.30, p-value < 0.05) and Moran space solidarity (Moran index = 0.258, Z score = 5.50, p-value < 0.05) showed the cluster distribution of area and volume of CPs. Hot spots and cold spots in the southwestern part of the study area were identified using KD and HSA. The relationship between existing independent and dependent variables (area of CPs) using regression analysis of OLS showed that slope and aggregate stability (>2.5 standard deviation) had the highest positive relationship with the dependent variable. Regarding the volume of CPs, land use (especially agricultural lands) had the strongest relationship with the dependent variable. Thus, geometrical characteristics of collapsed pipes can be applied as a quantitative indicator for the identification of hotspot zones (hazardous areas), land use planning, and erosion hazard mitigation. However, more studies are required to measure geometrical characteristics of soil landforms.

Automating inspection of critical infrastructure such as sewer systems will help utilities optimize maintenance and replacement schedules. The current inspection process consists of manual reviews of video as an operator controls a sewer inspection vehicle remotely. The process is slow, labor-intensive, and expensive and presents a huge potential for automation. With this work, we address a central component of the next generation of robotic inspection of sewers, namely the choice of 3D sensing technology. We investigate three prominent techniques for 3D vision: passive stereo, active stereo, and time-of-flight (ToF). The Realsense D435 camera is chosen as the representative of the first two techniques wheres the PMD CamBoard pico flexx represents ToF. The 3D reconstruction performance of the sensors is assessed in both a laboratory setup and in an outdoor above-ground setup. The acquired point clouds from the sensors are compared with reference 3D models using the cloud-to-mesh metric. The reconstruction performance of the sensors is tested with respect to different illuminance levels and different levels of water in the pipes. The results of the tests show that the ToF-based point cloud from the pico flexx is superior to the output of the active and passive stereo cameras.

The article focuses on a high-resolution ultrasound sensor for real-time monitoring of liquid analytes in cylindrical pipes, tubes, or capillaries. The development of such a sensor faces the challenges of acoustic energy losses, including dissipation at liquid/solid interface and acoustic wave radiation along the pipe. Furthermore, we consider acoustic resonant mode coupling and mode conversion. We show how the concept of phononic crystals can be applied to solve these problems and achieve the maximum theoretically possible Q-factor for resonant ultrasonic sensors. We propose an approach for excitation and measurement of an isolated radial resonant mode with minimal internal losses. The acoustic energy is effectively localized in a narrow probing area due to the introduction of periodically arranged sectioned rings around the tube. We present a sensor design concept, which optimizes the coupling between the tubular resonator and external piezoelectric transducers. We introduce a 2D-phononic crystal in the probing region for this purpose. The Q-factor of the proposed structures show the high prospects for phononic crystal pipe sensors.

The most severe disturbance of the earth's surface occurs when the open-cut method of mineral deposits mining is used. The geoecological situation was assessed based on the nature of the soil cover based on the example of an industrial site of a diamond mining and processing plant located in the permafrost zone. During the period from 2007 to 2018, the soil cover of the industrial site is characterized by polyelement contamination. In the surface, soil horizons were an increase in the concentrations of mobile forms of Mn, Zn, Cd, Cr, Co, and Ni. It is identified that AO, ABcr, and CR are the accumulation horizons if the soil profile is preserved. Mobile forms Mn, Zn, Ni, Cr, Co, and As can migrate along with the soil profile to a depth of 40-50 cm depending on the amount of soil organic matter, the degree of its decomposition, and the scale of the cryoturbation. Research in 2018 allowed us to localize and confirm the increase in the area of contamination of the industrial site. Areas with an extremely dangerous category of soil cover contamination increased by 3 times compared to 2014. The results obtained are the basis for a more detailed study of the horizons of geochemical accumulation and the creation of artificial geochemical barriers with the development of technologies for the subsequent extraction of useful components.

The popularity of SPACs (Special Purpose Acquisition Companies) has grown dramatically in recent years as a substitute for the traditional IPO (Initial Public Offer). We modeled the average annual return for SPAC investors and found that this financial tool produced an annual return of 17.3%. We then constructed an information model that examined a SPAC's excess returns during the 60 days after a potential merger or acquisition had been announced. We found that the announcement had a major impact on the SPAC's share price over the 60 days, delivering on average 0.69% daily excess returns over the IPO portfolio and 31.6% cumulative excess returns for the entire period. Relative to IPOs, the cumulative excess returns of SPACs rose dramatically in the next few days after the potential merger or acquisition announcement until the 26th day. They then declined but rose again until the 48th day after the announcement. Finally, the SPAC's structure reduced the investors' risk. Thus, if investors buy a SPAC stock immediately after a potential merger or acquisition has been announced and hold it for 48 days, they can reap substantial short-term returns.
