The genus Geobacillus is composed of thermophilic bacteria that exhibit diverse biotechnological potentialities. Specifically, Geobacillus stearothermophilus is included as a test bacterium in commercial microbiological inhibition methods, although it exhibits limited sensitivity to aminoglycosides, macrolides, and quinolones. Therefore, this article evaluates the antibiotic susceptibility profiles of five test bacteria (G. stearothermophilus subsp. calidolactis C953, Geobacillus thermocatenulatus LMG 19007, Geobacillus thermoleovorans LMG 9823, Geobacillus kaustophilus DSM 7263 and Geobacillus vulcani 13174). For that purpose, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 21 antibiotics were determined in milk samples for five test bacteria using the radial diffusion microbiological inhibition method. Subsequently, the similarities between bacteria and antibiotics were analyzed using cluster analysis. The dendrogram of this multivariate analysis shows an association between a group formed by G. thermocatenulatus and G. stearothermophilus and another by G. thermoleovorans, G. kaustophilus and G. vulcani. Finally, future microbiological methods could be developed in microtiter plates using G. thermocatenulatus as test bacterium, as it exhibits similar sensitivities to G. stearothermophilus. Conversely, G. vulcani, G. thermoleovorans and G. kaustophilus show higher MICs than G. thermocatenulatus.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that the number of low residue diet (LRD) days does not influence the bowel cleansing quality in non-selected patients. However, there are not data in the subgroup of patients with risk factors of inadequate bowel cleansing. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess whether a 3-day LRD improved the bowel cleansing quality in patients with risk factors of poor bowel cleansing. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Post hoc analysis of a randomized controlled trial carried out between December 2017 and March 2018 in a tertiary care hospital. Patients with high risk of poor bowel cleansing were selected following a validated score. The patients were randomized to the 1-day LRD or 3-day LRD groups. All patients received a 2-L split-dose of polyethylene glycol plus ascorbic acid. Intention-to-treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) analyses were conducted for the main outcome. RESULTS: 135 patients (1-day LRD group=67, 3-day LRD=68) were included. The rate of adequate cleansing quality was not significantly different between the groups in the ITT analysis: 76.1%, 95% CI: [64.6-84.8] vs. 79.4%, 95% CI: [68.2-87.4]; odds ratio (OR) 1.2, 95% CI [0.54-2.73]) or in the PP analysis: 77.3%, 95% CI: [65.7-85.8] vs. 80.3%, 95% CI: [69.0-88.3]; OR 1.2, 95% CI [0.52-2.77]). Compliance with the diet or cleansing solution, satisfaction or difficulties with the LRD and the polyp/adenoma detection rates were not significantly different. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that 1-day LRD is not inferior to 3-day LRD in patients with risk factors of inadequate bowel cleansing.

RESUMO

The goal of the present study was to evaluate the encapsulation of Weissella paramesenteroides, isolated from bee bread, as a technological tool for its use in biological fish silage. The pH decrease in fish silages using the bacteria encapsulated and in a non-encapsulated form was compared. W. paramesenteroides showed a good performance in the development of biological fish silage. The alginate encapsulation method showed an encapsulation efficacy of 85% and provides a reliable technological application.

In the present work, a yeast strain Pichia kudriavzevii was identified on the basis of 18S rDNA, showing maximum growth at 30°C and pH 7.0. Among all the complex polysaccharides used, wheat bran proved to be the best substrate as indicated by the maximum growth of the yeast strain. The yeast isolate was capable of producing xylanase both intra- and extra-cellularly, the dominant form being extracellular. The maximum enzyme activity was determined at pH 5.0 and at 50°C. Na+, Mg2+ and Fe2+ presence caused a substantial increase in enzyme activity while a slight decrease (4.5%) was observed in the presence of Mn2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+. Pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC) and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activities were assayed to confirm the presence of the ethanol pathway and PDC activity was much more pronounced (73%) compared to ADH activity (51%). The yeast strain can be employed to utilize hemicellulose containing agroindustrial residues for ethanol production.

Composting was performed using a mixture of ovine manure and straw. Inoculum was extracted at five different phases of the composting process (18, 23, 28, 33 and 38 days after the start of the composting process) and its effect on reducing biotransformation time was evaluated in the composted ovine manure. The samples were preserved in a deep freezer, then lyophilized to obtain the inoculum, 50g of which was added to each treatment in the second experimental phase. Six treatments were established; C=straw (P)+ovine manure (E), T1=P+ E+inoculum 18 days after the start of the composting process (I18), T2=P+E+I23, T3=P+E+I28, T4=P+E+I33, T5=P+E+I38, with three replications. Treatments were placed in a controlled-environment chamber at 45% relative humidity and 30°C along with flasks containing 50g of material to measure daily production, CO2 accumulation, temperature, pH, electric conductivity (dS/m), organic matter (%), total nitrogen (%), total carbon (%), C: N ratio, particle size (Tp) and bulk density (g/l). CO2 production (mg) showed a significant difference (p ≤.05) of treatments T2 and T5 with respect to the others, which demonstrated that the inoculum of these treatments accelerated the dynamics of microorganisms and the composting process. The quality and maturity of the compost are guaranteed as the amount of CO2 decreases.

INTRODUCTION: No cases of human brucellosis caused by Brucella suis has been reported in Spain. METHODS: This study involved interviews with the case and his co-workers, inspection of their workplace, checking infection control measures, and typing the Brucella strain isolated in the blood culture. RESULTS: Brucella suis biovar 1 strain 1330 was isolated from a patient who worked in a waste treatment plant. Food borne transmission, contact with animals, and risk jobs were ruled out. An accidental inoculation with a contaminated needle from a research laboratory waste container was identified as the most probable mode of transmission. CONCLUSION: There should be controls to ensure that waste containers are sealed.

Hydrolytic enzyme production (cellulases, laminarinases and xylanases) was studied in cultures of Lentinula edodes on sterilized coffee pulp. Samples of substrate colonized by mycelia were taken after 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days of incubation at 25°C (W1 to W5) and during the fruiting period at different stages: formation of primordia (PF), first harvest (H) and one week after the first harvest (PH). The enzymatic activity was lower during the early mycelial growth and showed higher levels during the formation and development of fruiting bodies. During the reproductive stage of the fungus, the samples were subjected to a soaking treatment; however, it was not possible to relate this soaking treatment to the increase in enzyme production. The levels of enzymatic activity suggest that secretion of the studied enzymes does not influence the adaptability of the strains to the substrate.

The tons of organic waste that are annually generated by agro-industry, can be used as raw material for methane production. For this reason, it is important to previously perform biodegradability tests to organic wastes for their full scale methanization. This paper addresses biodegradability, methane production and the behavior of populations of eubacteria and archaeabacteria during anaerobic digestion of banana, mango and papaya agroindustrial wastes. Mango and banana wastes had higher organic matter content than papaya in terms of their volatile solids and total solid rate (94 and 75% respectively). After 63 days of treatment, the highest methane production was observed in banana waste anaerobic digestion: 63.89ml CH4/per gram of chemical oxygen demand of the waste. In the PCR-DGGE molecular analysis, different genomic footprints with oligonucleotides for eubacteria and archeobacteria were found. Biochemical methane potential results proved that banana wastes have the best potential to be used as raw material for methane production. The result of a PCR- DGGE analysis using specific oligonucleotides enabled to identify the behavior of populations of eubacteria and archaeabacteria present during the anaerobic digestion of agroindustrial wastes throughout the process.

Ingestion of marine debris can have lethal and sublethal effects on sea turtles and other wildlife. Although researchers have reported on ingestion of anthropogenic debris by marine turtles and implied incidences of debris ingestion have increased over time, there has not been a global synthesis of the phenomenon since 1985. Thus, we analyzed 37 studies published from 1985 to 2012 that report on data collected from before 1900 through 2011. Specifically, we investigated whether ingestion prevalence has changed over time, what types of debris are most commonly ingested, the geographic distribution of debris ingestion by marine turtles relative to global debris distribution, and which species and life-history stages are most likely to ingest debris. The probability of green (Chelonia mydas) and leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) ingesting debris increased significantly over time, and plastic was the most commonly ingested debris. Turtles in nearly all regions studied ingest debris, but the probability of ingestion was not related to modeled debris densities. Furthermore, smaller, oceanic-stage turtles were more likely to ingest debris than coastal foragers, whereas carnivorous species were less likely to ingest debris than herbivores or gelatinovores. Our results indicate oceanic leatherback turtles and green turtles are at the greatest risk of both lethal and sublethal effects from ingested marine debris. To reduce this risk, anthropogenic debris must be managed at a global level.

INTRODUCTION: The application of Lean methodology in the hospital environment can help to improve interprofessional communication and reduce non-value adding activities (waste). OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of the implementation of a visual management tool, in the ability to reduce the number of trips, to determine the location of patients in real time in the process of intra-hospital transfers (ITH) and discharges in a hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Before-after study in a hospital internal medicine unit. Several time wastes due to unnecessary transfers were detected. A multiprofessional group was formed to design a visual management tool for the resolution of these identified problems. The opinion of the professionals on the tool was evaluated and variables of staff displacement and completion of the tool were measured before and after its implementation. RESULTS: The personnel involved was trained. Completion of the tool improved over time, both in HIT and in discharges, reducing the number of trips. CONCLUSIONS: The application of a visual management tool in care processes, including all the personnel involved is effective and saves waste.

The phenomenon of global warming due to the increased emission of greenhouse gases makes it necessary to raise public awareness about the importance of promoting sustainable practices. The field of radiology is not an exception, as it consumes a large amount of energy and resources to operate equipment and generate images. Green radiology is a sustainable, innovative, and responsible approach in radiology practice that focuses on minimizing the negative environmental effects of the technologies and procedures used in radiology. Its primary goal is to reduce the carbon, water and ecological footprint in our services based on four strategic pillars: decreasing energy, water, and helium usage; properly recycling and/or disposing of waste and residues (including contrast media); minimizing the environmental impact of ionizing radiation; and promoting eco-friendly radiology practices.

Introduction: Objective: this research aims to develop a product with high sensory and nutritional quality to make paraprobiotics developed in banana peel consumable within the scope of waste evaluation. Methods: Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus casei probiotics were developed here by using banana peels as a medium, and paraprobiotics were obtained from these strains by the pasteurization method at 80 °C for 30 minutes. Two types of bars, with and without paraprobiotics, were produced, and the nutritional and sensory quality characteristics of the bars were examined. Results: bars with and without paraprobiotics showed similar properties in terms of energy, protein, carbohydrate, saturated fat, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, Na, and total sugar values and sensory criteria, but showed significantly different levels in terms of total fat, potassium, total fiber, total phenolic substance and antiradical activity values. Conclusion: bars with and without paraprobiotics are in the category of "protein added, protein source, or protein-containing", "high fiber", "low sodium" products.


Introducción: Objetivo: esta investigación tiene como objetivo desarrollar un producto con alta calidad sensorial y nutricional para hacer consumibles los paraprobióticos desarrollados a partir de la cáscara de plátano en el ámbito de la evaluación de residuos. Métodos: en este estudio, se desarrollaron probióticos Lactobacillus plantarum y Lactobacillus casei utilizando la cáscara de plátano como medio, y se obtuvieron paraprobióticos a partir de estas cepas mediante el método de pasteurización a 80 °C durante 30 minutos. Se produjeron dos tipos de barras, con y sin paraprobióticos, y se examinaron las características de calidad nutricional y sensorial de las barras. Resultados: las barras con y sin paraprobióticos mostraron propiedades similares en cuanto a energía, proteínas, carbohidratos, grasas saturadas, calcio, magnesio, zinc, hierro, sodio y valores totales de azúcar, así como criterios sensoriales, pero presentaron niveles significativamente diferentes en términos de grasa total, potasio, fibra total, sustancias fenólicas totales y valores de actividad antirradical. Conclusión: las barras con y sin paraprobióticos se encuentran en la categoría de productos "con agregado de proteínas, fuente de proteínas o con contenido de proteínas", "alto contenido de fibra" y "bajo contenido de sodio".

BACKGROUND: Single-cell oils obtained from oleaginous microorganisms by using lignocellulosic waste hydrolysates are an alternative for producing biodiesel. AIMS: To isolate a yeast strain able to produce lipids from centrifuged nejayote (CN), hydrolyzed nejayote solids (HNS) and hydrolyzed sugarcane bagasse (HSB). METHODS: In order to identify the yeasts recovered, 26S ribosomal DNA was sequenced. The metabolic profile was assessed by using API20C AUX strips. The nutritional characterization of CN, HNS and HSB was performed by quantifying reducing sugars, total carbohydrates, starch, protein and total nitrogen. The biomass and lipid production ability were evaluated by performing growth kinetics of Clavispora lusitaniae Hi2 in combined culture media. RESULTS: Six oleaginous yeast strains were isolated and identified, selecting C. lusitaniae Hi2 to study its lipids production by using nejayote. The C. lusitaniae Hi2 strain can use glucose, xylose, arabinose, galactose and cellobiose as carbon sources. Cultures of C. lusitaniae Hi2 presented the best biomass (5.6±0.28 g/L) and lipid production (0.99±0.09 g/L) at 20 h of incubation with the CN:HNS media in the 25:75 and 50:50 ratios, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The use of CN, HNS and HSB for the growth of C. lusitaniae Hi2 is an option to take advantage of these agro-industrial residues and generate compounds of biotechnological interest.

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic reinforced the central role of the One Health (OH) approach, as a multisectoral and multidisciplinary perspective, to tackle health threats at the human-animal-environment interface. This study assessed Brazilian preparedness and response to COVID-19 and zoonoses with a focus on the OH approach and equity dimensions. We conducted an environmental scan using a protocol developed as part of a multi-country study. The article selection process resulted in 45 documents: 79 files and 112 references on OH; 41 files and 81 references on equity. The OH and equity aspects are poorly represented in the official documents regarding the COVID-19 response, either at the federal and state levels. Brazil has a governance infrastructure that allows for the response to infectious diseases, including zoonoses, as well as the fight against antimicrobial resistance through the OH approach. However, the response to the pandemic did not fully utilize the resources of the Brazilian state, due to the lack of central coordination and articulation among the sectors involved. Brazil is considered an area of high risk for emergence of zoonoses mainly due to climate change, large-scale deforestation and urbanization, high wildlife biodiversity, wide dry frontier, and poor control of wild animals' traffic. Therefore, encouraging existing mechanisms for collaboration across sectors and disciplines, with the inclusion of vulnerable populations, is required for making a multisectoral OH approach successful in the country.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between living near waste recycling sites and emotional or behavioral difficulties in schoolchildren. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study with schoolchildren aged 6-13 years old from disadvantaged communities in a Brazilian city, divided between those who live less than 100m away from the central point of the recycling site and those that live more than 150m away from the site, as a control group and classified through georeferencing. The emotional and behavioral difficulties were investigated using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire tool. Other variables were analyzed through logistic regression to determine their contribution to the outcomes. RESULTS: Children living near waste recycling sites had a higher prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems than children living farther away. In the logistic regression model, no other covariates had a significant impact on the results, except for attending preschool. As expected, the families of the exposed group had lower income and lower levels of schooling, thus being characterized as a highly vulnerable population. CONCLUSION: The association between living near waste recycling sites and lower test performance raises concerns about the impact of inappropriate waste management in urban centers on children's health.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the concentration of potentially toxic elements in Brachiaria decumbens, Stylosanthes guianensis, and Saccharum officinarum plants and soil samples in affected and unaffected areas by rupture of the Fundão dam, Brazil. Samples were collected in areas affected by residues from the Fundão dam (RAA1, RAA2, RAA3) and in an unaffected area (control). The material was analyzed for the composition of micronutrients and trace elements in soil and plants, as well as contamination factor (CF), accumulation factor, and translocation factor (TF). Overall, the results showed that soil and plant tissues had increased Fe, Mn, Cu, and Cr content and decreased Zn content in the affected areas, compared to the control. Leaves and roots of B. decumbens showed an increase in Fe content in affected areas, compared to the control, reaching a mean maximum value of 42 958 µg/g of roots of RAA2-collected plants. As a result, CF for Fe of B. decumbens was classified as very high and they presented low TF values. Furthermore, B. decumbens collected in affected areas showed an increase of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Cr in leaves, stems, and roots, whereas in Stylosanthes guianensis, there was an increase of Fe concentration in all tissues and Cr in leaves. Also, Saccharum officinarum showed the accumulation of Mn in the stem and Cu in leaves and stem. On the other hand, there was no contamination of plants by hazardous elements such as Pb, Cd, and As in the samples analyzed. In conclusion, increases in the content of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Cr were found in soil and several plant tissues of residue-affected areas, which could compromise plant growth and represent potential hazards arising from the biomagnification process in the food chain. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a concentração de elementos potencialmente tóxicos em plantas de Brachiaria decumbens, Stylosanthes guianensis e Saccharum officinarum e amostras de solos em áreas afetadas e não afetadas pelo rompimento da barragem de Fundão. As amostras foram coletadas em áreas afetadas por resíduos da barragem de Fundão (RAA1, RAA2, RAA3) e em uma área não afetada (controle). O material foi analisado quanto à composição de micronutrientes e elementos-traço no solo e plantas, além de fatores de contaminação (CF), bioacumulação e translocação (TF). No geral, os resultados mostraram que o solo e as plantas apresentaram maiores teores de Fe, Mn, Cu e Cr e menores teores de Zn nas áreas afetadas em comparação ao controle. Folhas e raízes de B. decumbens apresentaram aumento no teor de Fe nas áreas afetadas em relação ao controle, atingindo o valor máximo médio de 42.958 µg/g nas raízes de plantas coletadas em RAA2. Como resultado, CF para Fe de B. decumbens foi classificado como muito alto, mas com baixos valores de TF. Além disso, B. decumbens coletadas nas áreas afetadas apresentaram aumento de Fe, Mn, Cu e Cr nas folhas, caules e raízes, enquanto que em Stylosanthes guianensis houve aumento da concentração de Fe em todos as partes das plantas e Cr nas folhas. Saccharum officinarum também apresentou acúmulo de Mn no caule e Cu nas folhas e caule. Por outro lado, não há contaminação das plantas por elementos perigosos como Pb, Cd e As nas amostras analisadas. Concluindo, foram encontrados aumentos nos teores de Fe, Mn, Cu e Cr no solo e em vários tecidos vegetais, o que pode comprometer o crescimento das plantas e representar riscos potenciais decorrentes do processo de biomagnificação na cadeia alimentar. Introducción. La Organización Mundial dela Salud recomienda tres principios básicos para el manejo de residuos: reducirla generación de residuos innecesarios, separar los residuos ordinarios de los peligrosos, y tratarlos adecuadamente para minimizar los riesgos asociados. Objetivo. Determinar el nivel de conocimiento sobre el manejo de residuos hospitalarios del personal de enfermería del Hospital Regional de Caazapá. Materiales y métodos. Se realizó una investigación de corte transversal en el 2023 en el personal de enfermería. Se midió el nivel de conocimientos sobre manejo de residuos con la aplicación de un cuestionario validado. Resultados. Se incluyeron 168 personal de enfermería, 58% procedente de la zona rural, 75% de sexo femenino, 60% de 31 a 50 años de edad, 45% técnico en enfermería y 54% nombrado. El 75% tenía alto nivel de conocimiento en el manejo de residuos sólidos hospitalarios generales, 76,2% en el manejo de residuos sólidos hospitalarios bio-contaminados y 68,5% en el manejo de residuos hospitalarios comunes. La procedencia de zona rural y la condición de ser contratado se asociaron significativamente con niveles más bajos de conocimiento general, manejo de residuos especiales y manejo de residuos comunes. El menor nivel de conocimiento sobre manejo de residuos bio-contaminados también se relacionó con la procedencia rural. Conclusión. El nivel de conocimiento sobre manejo de residuo hospitalario en el personal de enfermería fue alto y estuvo relacionado con la procedencia y la condición laboral. Introduction. The World Health Organization recommends three basic principleson waste management: reducingunnecessary waste, separatingordinary waste fromhazardous waste and properly treating it to reduce risks. Objective.To determine the level of knowledge that nursing staffhave about the management of hospital waste at the Caazapá Regional Hospital. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional studywas carried outamong the nursing staff in 2023. The level of knowledge about waste management was measuredbya validated questionnaire. Results. A total of 168 nursing staff were included, 58% from rural areas, 75% female, 60% aged 31 to 50, 45% nursing technicians and 54% under permanent contract. 75% had a high level of knowledge inthe management of general hospital solid waste, 76.2% in the management of biocontaminated hospital solid waste and 68.5% inthe management of common hospital waste. Being from a rural area and with a temporary contractwere significantly associated withalowerlevel of general knowledge, with lowerknowledge of special waste management and with lower knowledge of common waste management. Lowerlevel of knowledge inthe management of biocontaminated waste was related to being from a rural area. Conclusion. The level of knowledge in the nursing staff was highand associated with origin and employment status. Key words: knowledge;waste management;medicalwaste

ABSTRACT Objective: To detect spatial and spatiotemporal clusters of urban arboviruses and to investigate whether the social development index (SDI) and irregular waste disposal are related to the coefficient of urban arboviruses detection in São Luís, state of Maranhão, Brazil. Methods: The confirmed cases of Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya in São Luís, from 2015 to 2019, were georeferenced to the census tract of residence. The Bayesian Conditional Autoregressive regression model was used to identify the association between SDI and irregular waste disposal sites and the coefficient of urban arboviruses detection. Results: The spatial pattern of arboviruses pointed to the predominance of a low-incidence cluster, except 2016. For the years 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019, an increase of one unit of waste disposal site increased the coefficient of arboviruses detection in 1.25, 1.09, 1.23, and 1.13 cases of arboviruses per 100 thousand inhabitants, respectively. The SDI was not associated with the coefficient of arboviruses detection. Conclusion: In São Luís, spatiotemporal risk clusters for the occurrence of arboviruses and a positive association between the coefficient of arbovirus detection and sites of irregular waste disposal were identified.


RESUMO Objetivo: Detectar aglomerados espaciais e espaço-temporais de arboviroses urbanas e investigar se o índice desenvolvimento social (IDS) e o descarte irregular de lixo estão relacionados ao coeficiente de detecção das arboviroses urbanas em São Luís, Maranhão. Métodos: Os casos confirmados de dengue, Zika e chikungunya em São Luís, no período de 2015 a 2019, foram georreferenciados para o setor censitário de residência. O modelo de regressão Autorregressivo Condicional Bayesiano foi utilizado para identificar a associação entre o coeficiente de detecção de arboviroses urbanas, IDS e pontos de descarte irregular de lixo. Resultados: O padrão espacial de arboviroses apontou para a predominância de cluster de baixo coeficiente de detecção, exceto em 2016. Para os anos de 2015, 2016, 2017 e 2019, o aumento de uma unidade de ponto de lixo aumenta o coeficiente de detecção de arboviroses em 1,25, 1,09, 1,23 e 1,13 casos de arboviroses por 100 mil habitantes, respectivamente. O IDS não foi associado ao coeficiente de detecção de arboviroses. Conclusão: Em São Luís foram identificados aglomerados espaço-temporais de risco para a ocorrência de arboviroses e a associação positiva entre o coeficiente de detecção de arboviroses e os pontos de descarte irregular de lixo.

Objetivo: Desenvolver intervenção educativa sobre gerenciamento dos resíduos de serviços de saúde e uso de equipamentos de proteção individual com profissionais de enfermagem. Métodos: Pesquisa-ação, realizada com profissionais de enfermagem de um hospital da rede pública no nordeste brasileiro, entre janeiro a julho de 2018. Os dados foram organizados com apoio do software webQDA© e análise de conteúdo de Bardin. Resultados: Emergiram duas categorias: Gerenciamento dos Resíduos de Serviços de Saúde e Utilização de Equipamentos de Proteção Individuais. Parte dos profissionais possuíam conhecimento adequado sobre o gerenciamento dos resíduos de serviços de saúde. Os resultados apontam que parcela dos participantes reconhecem a periculosidade que os grupos de resíduos de serviços de saúde possuem, adotando cuidados, porém, reconhecem a ocorrência de condutas não seguras, como uso incorreto de equipamentos de proteção individual. Além disso, os técnicos de enfermagem demostraram conhecimento incipiente sobre os resíduos de serviços de saúde e expressaram mais exposição a riscos ocupacionais. Conclusão: A intervenção educativa realizada evidenciou a necessidade de efetivar a construção de conhecimentos coletivos no âmbito da educação permanente relacionado aos resíduos e riscos ocupacionais entre profissionais de enfermagem. Recomendam-se outros estudos para avaliar a efetividade e impacto da intervenção educativa no ambiente hospitalar. (AU)


Objective: Develop educational intervention on health care waste management and the use of personal protective equipment with nursing professionals. Methods: Action research, carried out with nursing professionals from a public hospital in northeastern Brazil, between January and July 2017. The data were organized with the support of webQDA © software and content analysis by Bardin. Results: Two categories emerged: Waste Management from Health Services and Use of Personal Protective Equipment. Part of the professionals had adequate knowledge about the management of waste from health services. The results show that a portion of the participants recognize the dangerousness that the health service waste groups have, adopting care in relation to these, however, they recognize the occurrence of unsafe conduct, such as incorrect use of personal protective equipment. In addition, nursing technicians demonstrated incipient knowledge about health service waste and expressed more exposure to occupational risks. Conclusion: The educational intervention carried out showed the need to carry out the construction of collective knowledge within the scope of permanent education related to GRSS and occupational risks among nursing professionals. Further studies are recommended to assess the effectiveness and impact of educational intervention in the hospital environment. (AU)

Métodos: Investigación acción, realizada con la profesión de un hospital público en el noreste de Brasil, entre enero y julio de 2017. Los datos se organizan con el apoyo del software webQDA © y el análisis de contenido Bardin. Resultados: Surgieron dos categorías: Gestión de dos Residuos de Servicios de Salud y Uso de Equipos de Protección Personal. Los profesionales de la segunda parte tienen el conocimiento o manejo adecuado de dos residuos de los servicios de salud. Los resultados indican que dos participantes reconsideran la peligrosidad que representaban los grupos de residuos del servicio de salud, adhiriéndose cuidados, por lo que reconsideran la ocurrencia de conductas inseguras, como el uso incorrecto de equipos de protección personal. Además, los técnicos de enfermería demostrarán un conocimiento incipiente sobre el desperdicio de servicios de salud y expresarán una mayor exposición a los riesgos laborales. Conclusión: La intervención educativa realizada mostró la necesidad de realizar la construcción de conocimientos colectivos fuera del ámbito de la educación permanente relacionada con los GRSS y los riesgos laborales entre los profesionales de la enfermedad. Recomendamos otros estudios para evaluar la efectividad y el impacto de la intervención educativa en el ámbito hospitalario. (AU)

Introducción: la gestión inadecuada de residuos en el sector de la salud, especialmente en odontología, conlleva riesgos para la salud y el medio ambiente. En Chile, el reglamento sobre manejo de residuos de establecimientos de atención de salud (REAS) clasifica los residuos según su riesgo. La odontología sostenible, mediante prácticas como las 3 R y un modelo ampliado de 5 R, reduce impactos ambientales y costos, atrayendo a pacientes ecoconscientes. Objetivos: identificar el impacto ambiental de residuos en odontología y, utilizando el modelo de 5R, proponer acciones ecológicas basadas en evidencia, que se puedan aplicar en Chile. Materiales y Métodos: se realizó una revisión narrativa sobre el manejo de residuos generados en servicios dentales y prácticas sustentables durante la atención. Se utilizaron 30 artículos para lograr los objetivos. Resultados: los residuos odontológicos, en especial los quirúrgicos, provocan un impacto desmesurado en el medio ambiente. La generación y gestión de estos residuos dependen directamente de los profesionales. La odontología ecológica se centra en la adopción de prácticas sustentables y diferentes tecnologías e innovaciones para reducir el consumo de energía y la generación de residuos. Se presentan alternativas basadas en las 5R (reducir, reutilizar, reciclar, reflexionar e investigar) para disminuir la huella ambiental en la odontología. Conclusión: abordar el impacto ambiental de la odontología es crucial. La odontología sostenible requiere un enfoque interdisciplinario, prácticas más ecoamigables y políticas públicas adecuadas. La educación continua, la investigación y la concienciación ambiental son esenciales para este cambio. El método de las 5R es clave para fomentar la sostenibilidad en la odontología.


Introduction: Inadequate waste management in the healthcare sector, especially in dentistry, poses risks to health and the environment. In Chile, regulations on waste management from health care facilities (REAS) classify waste according to its risk level. Sustainable dentistry, through practices such as the 3 Rs and an expanded model of the 5 Rs, reduces environmental impacts and costs, appealing to eco-conscious patients. Materials and Methods: A review of the literature was performed on the management of waste generated in dental services and sustainable practices during care. Thirty articles were used to achieve the objectives. Results: Dental waste, especially surgical waste, has a disproportionate impact on the environment. The generation and management of these wastes depend directly on professionals. Ecological dentistry focuses on adopting sustainable practices and different technologies and innovations to reduce energy consumption and waste generation. Alternatives based on the 4 Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle, and reflect) are presented to reduce the environmental footprint in dentistry. Alternatives based on the 5Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink, and research) are presented to reduce the environmental footprint in dentistry. Conclusion: Addressing the environmental impact of dentistry is crucial. Sustainable dentistry requires an interdisciplinary approach, eco-friendly practices, and appropriate public policies. Continuous education, research, and environmental awareness are essential for this change. The 5R method is key to promoting sustainability in dentistry.
