RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major cause of chronic liver disease, in which liver stiffness increases. Liver stiffness measurements (LSM) are therefore essential in diagnosing liver diseases and predicting disease development. The study objective was to perform a comprehensive prospective assessment of the liver before, after and 4 years after treatment for HCV, including an assessment of the long-term outcome of fibrosis, steatosis and inflammation. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Patients eligible for HCV treatment were included prospectively in 2018 (n = 47). Liver stiffness was measured using transient elastography and 2D shear-wave elastography (SWE). Blood tests, B-mode ultrasound (US) and SWE, were performed before, after (end of treatment [EOT]), 3 months after (EOT3) and 4 years after treatment (4Y). At the final visit, we added attenuation imaging and shear-wave dispersion slope (SWDS) measurements to assess steatosis and inflammation. Three months after treatment, the sustained virologic response rate was 93%. The median liver stiffness for baseline, EOT, EOT3 and 4Y was 8.1, 5.9, 5.6 and 6.3 kPa, respectively. There was a significant reduction in liver stiffness from baseline to EOT, and from EOT to EOT3. After 4 years, the mean attenuation coefficient (AC) was 0.58 dB/cm/MHz, and the mean SWDS value was 14.3 (m/s)/kHz. CONCLUSION: The treatment for HCV was highly effective. Measurements of liver stiffness decreased significantly after treatment and remained low after 4 years. AC measurements indicated low levels of liver steatosis. Shear-wave dispersion values indicated inflammation of the liver, but the clinical implication is undetermined and should be explored in larger studies.Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT03434470. ABBREVIATIONS: AC: attenuation coefficient; APRI: aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index; ATI: attenuation imaging; cACLD: compensated advanced chronic liver disease; CAP: controlled attenuation parameter; FIB-4: Fibrosis-4 Index for liver fibrosis; HCC: hepatocellular carcinoma; LSM: liver stiffness measurement; NAFLD: non-alcoholic fatty liver disease; NASH: non-alcoholic steatohepatitis; SWDS: shear-wave dispersion slope; SWE: shear-wave elastography; US: ultrasound.

Objective: Glioma constitutes the most common primary malignant tumor in the central nervous system. In recent years, microwave ablation (MWA) was expected to be applied in the minimally invasive treatment of brain tumors. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of microwave ablation in ex vivo brain tissue by Shear Wave Elastography (SWE) to explore the application value of real-time SWE in monitoring the process of MWA of brain tissue. Methods: Thirty ex vivo brain tissues were treated with different microwave power and ablation duration. The morphologic and microscopic changes of MWA tissues were observed, and the diameter of the ablation areas was measured. In this experiment, SWE is used to quantitatively evaluate brain tissue's degree of thermal injury immediately after ablation. Results: This study It is found that the ablation range measured by SWE after ablation is in good consistency with the pathological range [ICCSWEL1-L1 = 0.975(95% CI:0.959 - 0.985), ICCSWEL2-L2 = 0.887(95% CI:0.779 - 0.938)]. At the same time, the SWE value after ablation is significantly higher than before (mean ± SD,9.88 ± 2.64 kPa vs.23.6 ± 13.75 kPa; p < 0.001). In this study, the SWE value of tissues in different pathological states was further analyzed by the ROC curve (AUC = 0.86), and the threshold for distinguishing normal tissue from tissue after ablation was 13.7 kPa. The accuracy of evaluating ablation tissue using SWE can reach 84.72%, providing data support for real-time quantitative observation of the ablation range. Conclusion: In conclusion the accurate visualization and real-time evaluation of the organizational change range of the MWA process can be realized by real-time SWE.

BACKGROUND: Focused ultrasound ablation surgery (FUAS) has been widely employed to treat patients with uterine fibroid (UF). This study aimed to estimate myometrial stiffness changes in patients who received FUAS for UFs or myomectomy (ME) and compare the recovery of surrounding myometrium between FUAS and ME groups. Our results may provide more evidence for guiding the proper conception timing in patients with UF. METHODS: This study enrolled 173 patients from May 2022 to August 2023. Shear wave elastography (SWE) was used to dynamically monitor myometrial elasticity changes in patients before and after surgery. Moreover, our study monitored and analyzed the stiffness changes in the targeted fibroid after FUAS, as well as in the myometrium around after FUAS or ME. RESULTS: The stiffness of the myometrium around the resected fibroid was significantly higher than at the preoperative level until 6 months. Conversely, the stiffness of the surrounding myometrium was only temporarily increased 1 day after FUAS. The comparison between FUAS and ME groups regarding the stiffness of the surrounding myometrium showed that nonsignificant differences were detected between the two groups before the treatment. The stiffness of the surrounding myometrium in the ME group was statistically significantly higher than that of the FUAS group 1 day as well as 1, 3, and 6 months after the treatment, respectively. CONCLUSION: The FUAS had less impact on the surrounding myometrium than the ME, which may be more conducive to the recovery of myometrial elasticity in patients with UF.

PURPOSE: The liver is known to be protected from steatosis under the influence of high GH/IGF-1. Cytokeratin 18 (CK18) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 7 (IGFBP7) increase in liver steatosis and fibrosis. The aim of this study was to use quantitative ultrasound techniques and biochemical markers to assess liver steatosis and liver fibrosis in newly diagnosed acromegaly. METHODS: This single-center, cross-sectional study included 23 patients with newly diagnosed acromegaly and 46 age, sex, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC)-matched controls. Liver steatosis was assessed using tissue attenuation imaging (TAI), and stiffness, indicative of fibrosis, was assessed by shear wave elastography (SWE). Serum IGFBP7 and CK18 were studied by ELISA. RESULTS: The acromegaly group had significantly lower liver steatosis (p = 0.006) and higher liver stiffness (p = 0.004), serum IGFBP7 (p = 0.048) and CK18 (p = 0.005) levels than the control group. The presence of fibrosis (p = 0.012) was significantly higher in the acromegaly group than in the control group. Moreover, CK18 was positively correlated with liver stiffness, WC, HOMA-IR, HbA1c, and triglyceride. In the acromegaly group, liver steatosis was negatively correlated with GH level. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis revealed that BMI (p = 0.008) and CK18 (p = 0.015) were independent risk factors for increased liver stiffness. CONCLUSION: This study showed that there was an increased presence of liver fibrosis independent of liver steatosis in newly diagnosed acromegaly. Serum CK18 appears to be a potential marker of increased liver fibrosis in acromegaly.

BACKGROUND: Parathyroid glands are important endocrine glands, and the identification of normal parathyroid glands is crucial for their protection. The aim of this study is to explore the sonographic characteristics of normal parathyroid glands and analyze the factors affecting their display. METHODS: Seven hundred three subjects who underwent physical examination at our hospital were included. The number, location, size, morphology, echogenicity and blood flow distribution of parathyroid glands were recorded. The ultrasound characteristics and display rate were also summarized. Meanwhile, shear wave elastography was performed in 50 cases to provide the stiffness measurements, and 26 cases received contrast-enhanced ultrasonography for the assessment of microcirculatory perfusion. Furthermore, we analyzed the factors affecting parathyroid display, including basic information of the subjects and ultrasound features of the thyroid. RESULTS: â A total of 1038 parathyroid glands were detected, among which, 79.29% were hyperechoic, 20.71% were isoechoic, 88.15% were oval-shaped, and 86.71% had blood flow of grade 0-I. â¡ 81.79% of the subjects had at least one parathyroid gland detected. ⢠The Emean, Emax, PI and AUC of the parathyroid glands were significantly lower than those of the adjacent thyroid tissue (P < 0.05). ⣠The display of normal parathyroid glands was related to BMI, thyroid echogenicity and thyroid volume of the subjects (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Normal parathyroid glands tend to appear as oval-shaped hyperechoic nodules with blood flow of grade 0-I. BMI, thyroid echogenicity and thyroid volume are independent factors affecting the display of parathyroid glands.

PURPOSE: To report normative stiffness parameters obtained using shear wave elastography in dorsiflexion from the Achilles tendons in asymptomatic professional ballet dancers and compare them with college-level athletes. METHODS: An Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved study consists of 28 professional ballet dancers and 64 asymptomatic collegiate athletes. The athletes were further subdivided into runner and non-runner disciplines. Shear wave elastography (SWE) measurements were made in maximum ankle dorsiflexion position. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Forty-eight (52%) males and 44 (48%) females were examined with an overall mean age of 22.2 (± 3.8 years). There were no significant SWE differences between dominant and non-dominant legs in both groups and comparing spin vs. non-spin leg of ballet dancers (p > 0.05). Ballet dancers had significantly higher short-axis velocity values than runners and non-runners (2.34 m/s increase and 2.79 m/s increase, respectively, p < 0.001). Long-axis velocity was significantly higher in ballet dancers compared to non-runners (by 0.80 m/s, p < 0.001), but was not different between ballet dancers and runners (p > 0.05). Short-axis modulus was significantly higher in dancers compared to runners and non-runners (by 135.2 kPa and 159.2 kPa, respectively, p < 0.001). Long-axis modulus (LAM) was not significantly different in ballet dancers when compared to runners. CONCLUSION: Asymptomatic professional ballet dancers exhibit greater short-axis tendon stiffness compared to athletes and greater long-axis tendon stiffness compared to non-runners but similar to runners. The functional benefit from elevated short-axis stiffness in dancers is not clear but may be related to greater axial loading and adaptations of the tendon matrix.

INTRODUCTION: Forced elbow flexion and pressure during bicycling result in ulnar nerve traction and pressure exerted in Guyon's canal or the nerve's distal branches. The compression of the nerves causes a change in their stiffness related to edema and eventually gradual fibrosis. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the elastography of terminal branches of the ulnar nerve in cyclists. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Thirty cyclists, 32 healthy individuals, and 32 volunteers with ulnar nerve entrapment neuropathies participated in the study. Each participant underwent a nerve examination of the cubital tunnel, Guyon's canal and the deep and superficial branches of the ulnar nerve using shear wave elastography. The cyclist group was tested before and after a 2-hour-long workout. RESULTS: Before cycling workouts, the ulnar nerve stiffness in the cubital tunnel and Guyon's canal remained below pathological estimates. Cycling workouts altered nerve stiffness in the cubital tunnel only. Notably, the stiffness of the ulnar terminal branches in cyclists was increased even before training. The mean deep branch stiffness was 50.85 ± 7.60 kPa versus 20.43 ± 5.95 kPa (p < 0.001) in the cyclist and healthy groups, respectively, and the mean superficial branch stiffness was 44 ± 12.45 kPa versus 24.55 ± 8.05 kPa (p < 0.001), respectively. Cycling contributed to a further shift in all observed values. DISCUSSION: These observations indicate the existence of persistent anatomical changes in the distal ulnar branches in resting cyclists that result in increased stiffness of these nerves. The severity of these changes remains, however, to be determined. CONCLUSIONS: These data show elastography values of the ulnar terminal branches in healthy individuals and cyclists where despite lack of clinical symptoms that they seem to be elevated twice above the healthy range.

INTRODUCTION: Transabdominal ultrasound (TU) pancreatic 2D-SWE elastography is a developing technique that needs to be protocolized. OBJECTIVES: Establish a protocol for image acquisition and measurement of TU pancreatic - 2D-SWE elastography and estimate the minimum number of measurements to be performed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten measurements of pancreatic elasticity were taken in healthy volunteers using TU-2D-SWE, following a strict protocol for image acquisition and measurement. RESULTS: The 70% of the participants were women, with an average age, weight, and BMI of 49.5±15.7 years, 65.9±11.9kg, and 24.5±4.2kg/m2, respectively. Measurements were taken from the body (70%), tail (16.7%), and pancreatic head (13.3%). The median mean velocity and elasticity were 1.46±0.25cm/sec and 6.46±2.87KPa, respectively. The ROI depth was 4.12±1cm and the SP-ROI distance was 5.2mm on average. There were no statistically significant differences between the 10 measurements. The reliability analysis of the measurements showed high internal consistency and repeatability. Taking 5-6 measurements ensured high concordance with the ten reference measurements. The measurements were significantly lower when the SP-ROI values were intermediate (0.3-0.6cm). The measurement accuracy was higher when performed at a depth less than 4.8cm. CONCLUSION: To measure pancreatic elasticity using TU-2D-SWE, we propose a strict protocol for image acquisition and measurement, taking a minimum of 5 measurements in the best visualized and accessible pancreatic portion, and preferably at a depth of less than 4.8cm.
RESUMO
Plant cell walls are complex structures mainly made up of carbohydrate and phenolic polymers. In addition to their structural roles, cell walls function as external barriers against pathogens and are also reservoirs of glycan structures that can be perceived by plant receptors, activating Pattern-Triggered Immunity (PTI). Since these PTI-active glycans are usually released upon plant cell wall degradation, they are classified as Damage Associated Molecular Patterns (DAMPs). Identification of DAMPs imply their extraction from plant cell walls by using multistep methodologies and hazardous chemicals. Subcritical water extraction (SWE) has been shown to be an environmentally sustainable alternative and a simplified methodology for the generation of glycan-enriched fractions from different cell wall sources, since it only involves the use of water. Starting from Equisetum arvense cell walls, we have explored two different SWE sequential extractions (isothermal at 160 ºC and using a ramp of temperature from 100 to 160 ºC) to obtain glycans-enriched fractions, and we have compared them with those generated with a standard chemical-based wall extraction. We obtained SWE fractions enriched in pectins that triggered PTI hallmarks in Arabidopsis thaliana such as calcium influxes, reactive oxygen species production, phosphorylation of mitogen activated protein kinases and overexpression of immune-related genes. Notably, application of selected SWE fractions to pepper plants enhanced their disease resistance against the fungal pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. These data support the potential of SWE technology in extracting PTI-active fractions from plant cell wall biomass containing DAMPs and the use of SWE fractions in sustainable crop production.

BACKGROUND: Staging of liver fibrosis traditionally relied on liver histology; however, transient elastography (TE) and more recently two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) evolved to noninvasive alternatives. Hence, we evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of 2D-SWE assessed by the Canon Aplio i800 ultrasound system using liver biopsy as reference and compared the performance to TE. METHODS: In total, 108 adult patients with chronic liver disease undergoing liver biopsy, 2D-SWE and TE were enrolled prospectively at the University Hospital Zurich. Diagnostic accuracies were evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) analysis, and optimal cut-off values by Youden's index. RESULTS: Diagnostic accuracy of 2D-SWE was good for significant (≥F2; AUROC 85.2%, 95% confidence interval (95%CI):76.2-91.2%) as well as severe fibrosis (≥F3; AUROC 86.8%, 95%CI: 78.1-92.4%) and excellent for cirrhosis (AUROC 95.6%, 95%CI: 89.9-98.1%), compared to histology. TE performed equally well (significant fibrosis: 87.5%, 95%CI: 77.7-93.3%; severe fibrosis: 89.7%, 95%CI: 82.0-94.3%; cirrhosis: 96%, 95%CI: 90.4-98.4%), and accuracy was not statistically different to 2D-SWE. 2D-SWE optimal cut-off values were 6.5, 9.8 and 13.1 kPa for significant fibrosis, severe fibrosis and cirrhosis, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Performance of 2D-SWE was good to excellent and well comparable with TE, supporting the application of this 2D-SWE system in the diagnostic workup of chronic liver disease.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to modify recognized clinically relevant post-operative pancreatic fistula (CR-POPF) risk evaluation models with quantitative ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE) values and identified clinical parameters to improve the objectivity and reliability of the prediction. METHODS: Two prospective, successive cohorts were initially designed for the establishment of CR-POPF risk evaluation model and the internal validation. Patients who scheduled to receive pancreatectomy were enrolled. Virtual touch tissue imaging and quantification (VTIQ)-SWE was used to quantify pancreatic stiffness. CR-POPF was diagnosed according to 2016 International Study Group of Pancreatic Fistula standard. Recognized peri-operative risk factors of CR-POPF were analyzed, and the independent variables selected from multivariate logistic regression were used to build the prediction model. RESULTS: Finally, the CR-POPF risk evaluation model was built in a group of 143 patients (cohort 1). CR-POPF occurred in 52/143 (36%) patients. Constructed from SWE values and other identified clinical parameters, the model achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.866, with sensitivity, specificity, and likelihood ratio of 71.2%, 80.2%, and 3.597 in predicting CR-POPF. Decision curve of modified model revealed a better clinical benefit compared to the previous clinical prediction models. The models were then examined via internal validation in a separate collection of 72 patients (cohort 2). CONCLUSIONS: Risk evaluation model based on SWE and clinical parameters is a potential non-invasive way to pre-operatively, objectively predict CR-POPF after pancreatectomy. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Our modified model based on ultrasound shear wave elastography may provide an easy access in pre-operative and quantitative evaluating the risk of CR-POPF following pancreatectomy and improve the objectivity and reliability of the prediction compared to previous clinical models. KEY POINTS: ⢠Modified prediction model based on ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE) provides an easy access for clinicians to pre-operatively, objectively evaluate the risk of clinically relevant post-operative pancreatic fistula (CR-POPF) following pancreatectomy. ⢠Prospective study with validation showed that the modified model provides better diagnostic efficacy and clinical benefits compared to previous clinical models in predicting CR-POPF. ⢠Peri-operative management of CR-POPF high-risk patients becomes more possible.

In patients with COVID-19-induced pneumonia, shear wave elasticity (SWE) was used to assess liver stiffness. This study included 48 cases of COVID-19-induced pneumonia and 48 cases of normal physical examination. Basic and clinical data, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST), were evaluated. Color ultrasonography was used to test the liver's SWE. A biopsy of the liver was also performed. In patients with COVID-19-induced pneumonia, AST and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were higher than those in the control group. Liver SWE showed that liver stiffness is hard (8.745 ± 0.2104) compared with the control group (7.386 ± 0.1521) (P < 0.0001). Pathological biopsy showed that liver inflammation accounted for 89.58%, steatosis accounted for 81.25%, necrosis accounted for 10.42%, and fibrosis accounted for 33.33% in patients with COVID-19-induced pneumonia. ROC curve analysis showed that the SWE is highly sensitive and specific for the diagnosis of liver inflammation and steatosis. The sensitivity was 88.76% and the specificity was 77.01% for the evaluation of liver inflammation. For steatosis, the sensitivity was 90.20%, and the specificity was 78.40%. The SWE of liver is useful to assess liver function and pathological status in COVID-19 patients.

Two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) is widely used as a noninvasive method to quantify liver stiffness. In humans, liver stiffness approximates histologic hepatic fibrosis. While histology is the gold standard for diagnosing liver disease, 2D-SWE may be a minimally invasive alternative to biopsy in feline patients. The objectives of this prospective, observational, crossover study were trifold: (1) to assess the feasibility of performing 2D-SWE in awake cats, (2) to determine whether anesthesia altered shear wave velocity (SWV) measurements, and (3) to correlate hepatic stiffness with histologically quantified hepatic fibrosis. Eleven healthy, purpose-bred cats underwent 2D-SWE in awake and anesthetized states. SWV measurements were compared with histologic fibrosis measurements obtained from liver biopsies during the anesthetic period. The mean velocities were not significantly different between awake (1.47 ± 0.18 m/s) and anesthetized (1.47 ± 0.24 m/s) cats. Premedication and anesthetic drugs did not impact mean SWV. There was a higher variability in the SWV values in the awake group. The data points were reliably replicated, with an interquartile range of 0.24 and 0.32 in anesthetized and awake groups, respectively. There was moderate agreement between observers (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.66). All cats had clinically insignificant fibrosis. There was no correlation between the SWV measurements and the histological fibrosis values. This study demonstrates that 2D-SWE is feasible in awake cats and that the anesthetic protocol employed did not significantly alter mean SWV. This work is the first to histologically validate normal SWV values in cats and show that 2D-SWE cannot differentiate minimal differences in feline hepatic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Low specificity in current breast imaging modalities leads to increased unnecessary follow-ups and biopsies. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of combining the quantitative parameters of high-definition microvasculature imaging (HDMI) and 2D shear wave elastography (SWE) with clinical factors (lesion depth and age) for improving breast lesion differentiation. METHODS: In this prospective study, from June 2016 through April 2021, patients with breast lesions identified on diagnostic ultrasound and recommended for core needle biopsy were recruited. HDMI and SWE were conducted prior to biopsies. Two new HDMI parameters, Murray's deviation and bifurcation angle, and a new SWE parameter, mass characteristic frequency, were included for quantitative analysis. Lesion malignancy prediction models based on HDMI only, SWE only, the combination of HDMI and SWE, and the combination of HDMI, SWE and clinical factors were trained via elastic net logistic regression with 70% (360/514) randomly selected data and validated with the remaining 30% (154/514) data. Prediction performances in the validation test set were compared across models with respect to area under the ROC curve as well as sensitivity and specificity based on optimized threshold selection. RESULTS: A total of 508 participants (mean age, 54 years ± 15), including 507 female participants and 1 male participant, with 514 suspicious breast lesions (range, 4-72 mm, median size, 13 mm) were included. Of the lesions, 204 were malignant. The SWE-HDMI prediction model, combining quantitative parameters from SWE and HDMI, with AUC of 0.973 (95% CI 0.95-0.99), was significantly higher than the result predicted with the SWE model or HDMI model alone. With an optimal cutoff of 0.25 for the malignancy probability, the sensitivity and specificity were 95.5% and 89.7%, respectively. The specificity was further improved with the addition of clinical factors. The corresponding model defined as the SWE-HDMI-C prediction model had an AUC of 0.981 (95% CI 0.96-1.00). CONCLUSIONS: The SWE-HDMI-C detection model, a combination of SWE estimates, HDMI quantitative biomarkers and clinical factors, greatly improved the accuracy in breast lesion characterization.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) is an accurate method for the non-invasive evaluation of liver fibrosis. We aimed to determine the reliability criteria and the number of necessary reliable measurements for 2D-SWE. METHODS: 788 patients with chronic liver disease underwent liver biopsy and 2D-SWE examination in three centers. The 4277 2D-SWE measurements performed were 2:1 randomly divided into derivation (n = 2851) and validation (n = 1426) sets. Reliability criteria for a 2D-SWE measurement were defined in the derivation set from the intrinsic characteristics given by the device (mean liver stiffness, standard deviation, diameter of the region of interest), with further evaluation in the validation set. RESULTS: In the whole population of 4277 measurements, AUROC for bridging fibrosis was 0.825 ± 0.006 and AUROC for cirrhosis was 0.880 ± 0.006. Mean stiffness and coefficient of variation (CV) were independent predictors of bridging fibrosis or cirrhosis. From these two parameters, new criteria were derived to define a reliable 2D-SWE measurement: stiffness <8.8 kPa, or stiffness between 8.8-11.9 kPa with CV <0.25, or stiffness ≥12.0 kPa with CV <0.10. In the validation set, AUROC for bridging fibrosis was 0.830 ± 0.013 in reliable measurements vs 0.667 ± 0.031 in unreliable measurements (P < .001). AUROC for cirrhosis was 0.918±0.014 vs 0.714 ± 0.027, respectively (P < .001). The best diagnostic accuracy for a 2D-SWE examination was achieved from three reliable measurements. CONCLUSIONS: Reliability of a 2D-SWE measurement relies on the coefficient of variation and the liver stiffness level. A 2D-SWE examination should include three reliable measurements according to our new criteria.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore whether collagen fiber features and collagen type I alpha 1 (COL1A1) are related to the stiffness of breast lesions and whether COL1A1 can predict axillary lymph node metastasis (LNM). METHODS: Ninety-four patients with breast lesions were consecutively enrolled in the study. Amongst the 94 lesions, 30 were benign, and 64 were malignant (25 were accompanied by axillary lymph node metastasis). Ultrasound (US) and shear wave elastography (SWE) were performed for each breast lesion before surgery. Sirius red and immunohistochemical staining were used to examine the shape and arrangement of collagen fibers and COL1A1 expression in the included tissue samples. We analyzed the correlation between the staining results and SWE parameters and investigated the effectiveness of COL1A1 expression levels in predicting axillary LNM. RESULTS: The optimal cut-off values for Emax, Emean, and Eratio for diagnosing the benign and malignant groups, were 58.70 kPa, 52.50 kPa, and 3.05, respectively. The optimal cutoff for predicting axillary LNM were 107.5 kPa, 85.15 kPa, and 3.90, respectively. Herein, the collagen fiber shape and arrangement features in breast lesions were classified into three categories. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that Emax, Emean, and Eratio differed between categories 0, 1, and 2 (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, elasticity parameters were positively correlated with collagen categories and COL1A1 expression. The COL1A1 expression level > 0.145 was considered the cut-off value, and its efficacy in benign and malignant breast lesions was 0.808, with a sensitivity of 66% and a specificity of 90%. Furthermore, when the COL1A1 expression level > 0.150 was considered the cut-off, its efficacy in predicting axillary LNM was 0.796, with sensitivity and specificity of 96% and 59%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The collagen fiber features and expression levels of COL1A1 positively correlated with the elastic parameters of breast lesions. The expression of COL1A1 may help diagnose benign and malignant breast lesions and predict axillary LNM.

The aim of this study was to assess the value of high-resolution ultrasonic quantitative parameters of shear wave elastography (SWE) in basal cell carcinoma (BCC). A total of 86 cases of BCC were enrolled as the case group, and 38 other similar skin pigmented lesions were randomly selected as the control group. Using pathological results as the gold standard, the diagnostic test method was used to evaluate the ability of high-frequency ultrasonic elastography to diagnose BCC, and the 2D ultrasonographic features, blood flow image characteristics, and SWE of BCC were summarized.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the role of shear wave elastography (SWE) in characterizing different endometrial and subendometrial pathologies. METHODS: Seventy-three women with pathologically proven endometrial and subendometrial pathologies were enrolled in this prospective study and assessed with transvaginal SWE. The elasticity values (in kiloPascals), and the ratio of mean elasticity of the endometrial lesion to myometrial elasticity (E/M ratio) were compared in different pathologies. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference (P <.001) in the mean, minimum, and maximum elasticity of the pathologies as well as the E/M ratio (P <.00001). In the analysis of the subgroups, the mean elasticity of endometrial polyp was statistically significantly lower than other subgroups (P <.01), while submucosal leiomyoma and focal adenomyoma had significantly higher values than other subgroups (P <.01). No statistically significant difference was noted in the mean elasticity of carcinoma and hyperplasia (P-.19). CONCLUSION: SWE is a potential adjunct to ultrasound that provides an additional paradigm to characterize endometrial and subendometrial masses.

INTRODUCTION: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition that is very common all over the world, concerns about men and causes very important social problems. The aim of this study is to perform quantitative penile corpus cavernosum (CC) stiffness measurements by using SWE for patients with both types of vascular ED. METHODS: In our study, we handled the data of 101 participants in total. The average age of the participants was 56.36. We divided the participants after color Doppler US (CDUS) into three groups: normal group (n = 30), arterial insufficiency (n = 51), and venous insufficiency (n = 20). SWE measurements were made in both groups in the CC flaccid (f) and rigid (r) positions, and the results were noted. International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire and Erection score (ES) were evaluated. RESULTS: The mean CC f SWE and r SWE measurement values were 20.2 ± 0.8 and 17.15 ± 0.54 kPa, 3.84 ± 0.13 and 2.78 ± 0.11 m/s in the arterial insufficiency group; 15.72 ± 0.58 and 12.52 ± 0.33 kPa, 2.88 ± 0.06 and 2.09 ± 0.11 m/s in the venous insufficiency group; 14.75 ± 0.51 and 13.41 ± 0.36 kPa, 2.63 ± 0.1 and 2.34 ± 0.11 m/s in the control group, respectively. The CC measurement of f SWE and r SWE values as kPa showed significant differences between the groups (P < .001). CONCLUSION: SWE can provide quantitative data with high specificity and sensitivity while evaluating CC penile stiffness noninvasively. It seems to contribute to the radiological evaluation of ED cases with useful data.
