OBJECTIVES: Two bolt-on dimensions (skin irritation, self-confidence) have been developed for the EQ-5D-5L to improve its content validity and responsiveness in psoriasis. However, the two bolt-ons are not strictly psoriasis-specific and are potentially relevant in other skin conditions. This study aims to explore the content validity of the EQ-5D-5L with two bolt-ons in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). METHODS: In 2021-2022, qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 adult AD patients at a university dermatology clinic in Hungary. We aimed for a heterogeneous sample in terms of age, gender, education and disease severity. Patients completed the EQ-5D-5L with two bolt-ons using a think-aloud protocol. Probing questions were posed to investigate item relevance, potential conceptual overlaps, missing concepts and the appropriateness of the recall period. Interview transcripts were subjected to thematic analysis. RESULTS: The EQ-5D-5L with the two bolt-ons covered the most important aspects of health-related quality of life in AD patients. Most patients found both the skin irritation and self-confidence bolt-ons relevant. Fifteen potential missing concepts were identified, but only two (social relationships, judgement by others) were identified by more than one patient. A smaller conceptual overlap was found between the skin irritation and pain/discomfort dimensions in 7 patients (35%). Half the patients expressed a preference for a recall period of 1 week rather than of 'today'. CONCLUSIONS: The EQ-5D-5L with skin irritation and self-confidence bolt-ons showed good relevance, comprehensiveness and comprehensibility in patients with AD. However, in terms of comprehensiveness, social relationships and judgement by others (stigma) may be missing from the questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period cause significant physical and psychological changes in mothers, leading to changes in their sexual self-concept and adverse effects on their sexual self-confidence and self-efficacy. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of sexual education on postpartum women's sexual self-efficacy and self-confidence. METHOD: This randomized interventional study was conducted on 115 women who had given birth at least six weeks ago and attended healthcare centers. Using convenience sampling, the researchers randomly allocated the participants into two intervention and control groups through a block size of six. The intervention group received six 90-minute online training sessions based on the sexual self-concept model over one month, while the control group received routine care. To collect data, the self-efficacy and sexual confidence questionnaires by Buzwell and Rosenthal were used before the intervention, immediately after the intervention, and one month later. RESULTS: The study findings demonstrated no significant differences in demographic characteristics, sexual self-confidence, and sexual self-efficacy scores between the two groups before the intervention. However, the repeated measures ANOVA results revealed a substantial increase in sexual self-confidence and self-efficacy scores over time in the intervention group immediately after participating in the training sessions and one month later. CONCLUSION: Considering the effect of training based on the sexual self-concept model on postpartum women, the researchers recommend using this model to improve their sexual self-efficacy and self-confidence after childbirth. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study is registered at the Iranian Registry Clinical Trial (IRCT20220530055025N1).

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a global public health priority. The World Health Organization adopted a Global Action Plan on Dementia, with dementia awareness a priority. This study examined the knowledge, attitudes, and self-confidence with skills required for providing dementia care among primary health care providers in Vietnam. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 405 primary health care providers who worked at commune health stations and district health centers in eight provinces across Vietnam. RESULTS: The results showed that primary health care providers had poor knowledge and little confidence but more positive attitudes toward dementia care and management. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest the training needs for building capacity amongst primary health care providers, which will be critical as Vietnam's population ages.

BACKGROUND: The traditional teaching methods of dental education are gradually being replaced with futuristic education methods based on the usage of educational tools such as mannequin-based simulation models and virtual reality. However, the effectiveness of mannequin-based simulation models as a learning method in the field of oral surgery remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of training on a tooth extraction model (TEM) in view of undergraduate dental students' experience and perception of their education. METHODS: A quasi-experimental trial was implemented with two consecutive year classes, totaling 136 students at the Dentistry Faculty of Altinbas University, Turkiye. Two cohorts were created from dental students in the classes of 2023 and 2022 graduates. Cohort 1 (n = 71) received 14 h of theoretical education followed by 10 h of preclinical education on TEM. Cohort 2 (n = 65) received only 14 h of theoretical education. An anonymous questionnaire was prepared with four main sections including the preferences of learning style, participants' perceptions of the preclinical training methods, the students' competency and free text comments. Students' opinions were quantified with both 7-point Likert scales and thematic analysis. Anxiety levels were measured with the interval scale of anxiety response (ISAR). Descriptive statistics, inferential statistical and thematic analyses were conducted according to survey responses. Student characteristics were summarized and compared for two cohorts using a t-test. For all statistical analyses, the significance level was set atP ≤ 0.05. RESULT: Cohort 1 was more comfortable with sequential motions performed with the forceps (P = 0.033) and felt more ready for their first clinical tooth extraction experience (P = 0.028). Cohort 2 showed a significantly higher preference for textbooks among supplementary materials (P = 0.04); however, they tended to exhibit lower self-confidence and higher anxiety levels, though without any statistical significance (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: It is clear that the students who have yet to start seeing patients benefit from increased practice with training models, which adequately reflect and represent real-life situations encountered in everyday practice.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes recently has been identified as a growing epidemic. Although insulin's vital role in both types of diabetes, it is considered one of the harmful medications if used incorrectly. In Egypt, effective usage of insulin remains a challenge due to insufficient knowledge of insulin and diabetes management, leading to errors in insulin therapy. As pharmacists are experts in pharmacological knowledge, they are uniquely situated to assess adherence to treatment regimens, the effect of drug therapy, or potential alterations in drug therapy to meet patient goals. To provide effective patient education and counseling, community pharmacists in Egypt should be efficiently knowledgeable about diabetes and insulin. OBJECTIVE: To identify the knowledge, attitude, and practice of pharmacists and patients about insulin. To identify pharmacists' educational preparedness and confidence in counseling diabetic patients. METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with two knowledge, attitude, and practice surveys. This study was carried out from September 2016 to February 2023. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with patients, and a paper-based questionnaire was administered to pharmacists. The two questionnaires were adapted from previous studies. RESULTS: A total of 492 patients and 465 pharmacists participated in this study. The mean knowledge score of correct answers among patients and pharmacists was 10.67 ± 1.9 and 15 ± 3.6. Most of the patients and pharmacists had a positive attitude regarding insulin's role in improving health and to better control blood glucose. On the negative side, around half of the patients reported that they believe that regular use of insulin leads to addiction, while only 14.5% of the pharmacists believed that insulin could cause addiction. Self-confidence scores for pharmacists differed statistically with sex, years of experience, and pharmacist's direct exposure to diabetic patients. CONCLUSIONS: This study uncovers considerable deficiencies in patients' and pharmacists' knowledge about insulin therapy. This study also strongly recommends higher education and a more structured pharmacist training schedule.

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between gambling behavior, self-confidence, and psychological resilience levels among university students. Additionally, the study aims to investigate the relationship between gambling behavior and socio-demographic variables. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted between April and June 2023. The research employed a questionnaire, the Brief Psychological Resilience Scale, the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), and the Self-Confidence Scale. The study was carried out online, reaching 229 students through Google Forms. According to the SOGS scores, 4.8% of the students are at risk of gambling addiction. Male students have statistically significantly higher SOGS scores than female students. The SOGS score is significantly higher in working students, smokers, and alcohol drinkers (p < 0.05). No statistically significant relationship was found between the students' SOGS scores and the self- confidence scale (p = 0.637) and the brief resilience scale (p = 0.675). It is thought that training should be given to risky groups in order to prevent gambling behavior. In addition, it is thought that supporting university students to be active in different arts and sports fields may have a positive effect on preventing and reducing addictions.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, simulation-based learning (SBL) serves as an alternative teaching strategy for nursing students facing restricted access to antenatal clinical practicum. However, the factors predicting nursing students' satisfaction, self-confidence, and their learning experiences remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To identify factors predict satisfaction and self-confidence and explore the learning experiences of antenatal SBL. METHODS: A Mixed methods research of the cross-sectional study design and descriptive qualitative research was conducted. A total of 100 third year nursing students who finished the Maternity-Newborn Nursing and Midwifery Practice course using antenatal simulation-based learning were invited to complete the online questionnaires. A total of seven questionnaires were administered, including a demographic questionnaire, the Attitude Scale toward Simulation-Based Education (SBE), the Professional Identity Scale for Nursing Students, the Perceived Stress Scale, the Evaluation of Teaching Competencies Scale, the Simulation Design Scale: Student Version, and the Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning. The 20 nursing students who completed survey were asked to participate a qualitative focus group discussion. Multiple regression analysis was performed to investigate predictors, while qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS: The quantitative results showed high levels of satisfaction (mean = 20.55, SD = 3.17) and self-confidence (mean = 32.44, SD = 4.76) after completing the antenatal SBL. In regression analysis, attitude toward SBE (Beta = 0.473, t = 5.376, p < 0.001) and attitude toward antenatal care simulation design (Beta = 0.338, t = 2.611, p < 0.011) were significantly associated with a high level of satisfaction with antenatal SBL, which accounted for 44.0% of the variance explained in satisfaction. Only attitude toward SBE was significantly associated with a high level of self-confidence in antenatal SBL (Beta = 0.331, t = 3.773, p < 0.001), which accounted for 45.0% of the variance explained in self-confidence. The qualitative results generated four themes: (1) positive attitude toward antenatal simulation; (2) turning reassurance into confidence; (3) I am really happy to learn; and (4) being a good nurse motivates and stresses me. CONCLUSIONS: Antenatal SBL is an effective teaching strategy that can support nursing students to build clinical confidence. Creating a positive learning environment allows students to have a positive attitude and experience with simulations.

BACKGROUND: Decision making is a pivotal component of nursing education worldwide. This study aimed to accomplish objectives: (1) Cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric validation of the Nursing Anxiety and Self-Confidence with Clinical Decision Making (NASC-CDM©) scale from English to Spanish; (2) Comparison of nursing student groups by academic years; and (3) Analysis of the impact of work experience on decision making. METHODS: Cross-sectional comparative study. A convenience sample comprising 301 nursing students was included. Cultural adaptation and validation involved a rigorous process encompassing translation, back-translation, expert consultation, pilot testing, and psychometric evaluation of reliability and statistical validity. The NASC-CDM© scale consists of two subscales: self-confidence and anxiety, and 3 dimensions: D1 (Using resources to gather information and listening fully), D2 (Using information to see the big picture), and D3 (Knowing and acting). To assess variations in self-confidence and anxiety among students, the study employed the following tests: Analysis of Variance tests, homogeneity of variance, and Levene's correction with Tukey's post hoc analysis. RESULTS: Validation showed high internal consistency reliability for both scales: Cronbach's α = 0.920 and Guttman's λ2 = 0.923 (M = 111.32, SD = 17.07) for self-confidence, and α = 0.940 and λ2 = 0.942 (M = 80.44, SD = 21.67) for anxiety; and comparative fit index (CFI) of: 0.981 for self-confidence and 0.997 for anxiety. The results revealed a significant and gradual increase in students' self-confidence (p =.049) as they progressed through the courses, particularly in D2 and D3. Conversely, anxiety was high in the 1st year (M = 81.71, SD = 18.90) and increased in the 3rd year (M = 86.32, SD = 26.38), and significantly decreased only in D3. Work experience positively influenced self-confidence in D2 and D3 but had no effect on anxiety. CONCLUSION: The Spanish version (NASC-CDM-S©) was confirmed as a valid, sensitive, and reliable instrument, maintaining structural equivalence with the original English version. While the students' self-confidence increased throughout their training, their levels of anxiety varied. Nevertheless, these findings underscored shortcomings in assessing and identifying patient problems.

This study set out to examine to what extent a set of psychological, health and socio-demographic factors are associated with self-efficacy (SE) in a large sample of over 12,000 participants over a two-year period. We were interested in the correlates of self-efficacy (criterion variable) with gender, age, education and occupation, the Big-Five personality factors and cognitive ability, as well as mental and physical health (predictor variables). Regression analyses showed that four of the Big-Five personality factors (extraversion, neuroticism, conscientiousness, and openness), cognitive ability, mental and physical health, gender, education and occupation were all significant and independent predictors of self-efficacy, accounting for 23% of the variance of the outcome variable. Personality variables, particularly Neuroticism and Conscientiousness, were the most powerful predictors of SE two years later. The implications for encouraging SE in individuals are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which in-service physical education teachers construct their self-efficacy beliefs toward teaching students with disabilities in general physical education classes. Using a qualitative descriptive approach situated within self-efficacy theory, data were collected via semistructured audio-recorded interviews with 16 in-service physical educators. Three interrelated themes were constructed: (a) The more I do it, the better I feel: the importance of professional experiences; (b) I've learned from others: the influence of colleagues; and (c) Being in the general educational setting is a challenge: the impact of contextual factors. Findings supported the influence of the four sources of self-efficacy (i.e., mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and affective and physiological state), in addition to potential contextual factors (i.e., class sizes and availability of hands-on support), impacting participants' self-efficacy to teach students with disabilities in general physical education classes.

OBJECTIVES: Design of simulation training can have important implications for learning outcomes. This paper describes a pilot simulation training program for baccalaureate nursing students that includes intensive preparations, peer-to-peer skills training (P2P), prior to full-scale scenario training. METHODS: A quality improvement analysis of a large scale experimental, mixed methods study. The project describes the design, analysis, and potential effects of a simulation education program containing P2P for third year nursing students (163 in treatment; 148 in control, n=311). RESULTS: The intervention group was found to be significantly more confident in both technical and non-technical nursing skills. Results suggest that the addition of P2P training may have a direct positive impact and increase the impact on full-scale simulations and debriefing. CONCLUSIONS: Enhanced focus on preparation activities prior to full-scale scenarios, including the use of P2P training methods are advocated.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has revealed gender-specific differences between general practitioners in adapting to the posed challenges. As primary care workforce is becoming increasingly female, in many countries, it is essential to take a closer look at gender-specific influences when the global health care system is confronted with a crisis. OBJECTIVE: To explore gender-specific differences in the perceived working conditions and gender-specific differences in challenges facing GPs at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. DESIGN: Online survey in seven countries. PARTICIPANTS: 2,602 GPs from seven countries (Austria, Australia, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Slovenia). Of the respondents, 44.4% (n = 1,155) were women. MAIN MEASURES: Online survey. We focused on gender-specific differences in general practitioners' perceptions of working conditions at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. KEY RESULTS: Female GPs rated their skills and self-confidence significantly lower than male GPs (f: 7.1, 95%CI: 6.9-7.3 vs. m: 7.6, 95%CI 7.4-7.8; p < .001), and their perceived risk (concerned about becoming infected or infecting others) higher than men (f: 5.7, 95%CI: 5.4-6.0 vs. m: 5.1, 95%CI: 4.8-5.5; p = .011). Among female GPs, low self-confidence in the treatment of COVID-19 patients appear to be common. Results were similar in all of the participating countries. CONCLUSIONS: Female and male GPs differed in terms of their self-confidence when dealing with COVID-19-related issues and their perceptions of the risks arising from the pandemic. To ensure optimal medical care, it is important that GPs realistically assess their own abilities and overall risk.

OBJECTIVE: Significant attention has been devoted to knowledge of and attitudes toward epilepsy among teachers, and the importance of their previous experience with epilepsy has been proved. However, no information about a specific group of homeroom teachers is available despite their importance in forming a positive climate in class and preventing related stigma. Thus, we aim to evaluate knowledge of and attitudes towards epilepsy in this group and compare the results with previously studied groups of 136 teachers in training and 123 primary school teachers not having, in most cases, experience with children with epilepsy. METHODS: One hundred and four homeroom teachers of children with epilepsy attending mainstream schools were involved in the study. They fulfilled an 18-item knowledge test, a 5-item questionnaire focusing on epilepsy-related self-confidence, and a 21-item Czech version of the Attitudes Towards People with Epilepsy scale. All instruments were used and validated in our previous research focusing on the other groups of teachers, making possible the direct comparison of the results. RESULTS: We found that homeroom teachers had significantly better knowledge of epilepsy (total score of 11.75 ± 2.29 points compared with 10.21 ± 2.08 points for primary school teachers and 9.60 ± 2.08 points for teachers in training) as well as more positive attitudes (30.81 ± 11.11 vs. 24.80 ± 11.01, and 25.81 ± 10.20, respectively). Regarding self-confidence, homeroom teachers were comparable with primary school teachers (total score of 18.31 ± 3.74 compared with 17.71 ± 3.86) but significantly better than teachers in training (16.37 ± 3.20). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that despite having a higher level of epilepsy-related knowledge, self-confidence, and attitudes, homeroom teachers still have significant shortages in some specific issues, especially regarding the ability to recognize the adverse effects of antiepileptic drugs. Tailored education interventions focusing on these groups and topics are thus highly needed.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which adolescent asthma management self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and asthma responsibility were associated with asthma control and quality-of-life. Adolescent self-efficacy and outcome expectations are important components of social cognitive theory, which guided this research. METHODS: English- and Spanish-speaking adolescents ages 11-17 with persistent asthma were recruited at four pediatric clinics. Adolescents were interviewed and parents completed questionnaires. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Three hundred and fifty-nine adolescents were recruited. Older adolescent age, male gender, and higher adolescent asthma management self-efficacy were significantly associated with higher adolescent responsibility; outcome expectations were not significantly associated with responsibility. Adolescent ratings of their own responsibility were higher than parent ratings of their child's responsibility for almost all asthma management tasks. Adolescents with higher reported asthma management self-efficacy were significantly more likely to have better quality-of-life and controlled asthma. Adolescents with more positive outcome expectations were significantly more likely to have controlled asthma. Being Native American was associated with worse quality-of-life and asthma not being controlled. Being Black was associated with asthma not being controlled. CONCLUSIONS: Parents and providers should work to improve adolescent self-efficacy in managing their asthma because it is associated with asthma responsibility, asthma control, and quality-of-life. Providers need to especially work with Native American and Black adolescents to improve quality-of-life and asthma control.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of childhood's most common skin conditions. Although pediatricians often diagnose and manage it, more than half refer even mild cases to dermatologists. In this study, we aimed to evaluate pediatric residents' and pediatricians' self-confidence regarding their ability to diagnose and manage AD. A cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted with Israeli pediatric residents and pediatricians in 2022. The questionnaire was designed to distinguish participants with high vs. low self-confidence characteristics regarding their ability to diagnose and treat AD. In total, 171 participants completed the questionnaire (59.4% women; age, 41.1 ± 10.6 years); 39.1% of the participants were residents, while 60.9% were board-certified pediatricians. Overall, 64.4% of the responders reported below or average confidence (score ≤ 3, on a scale of 1-5) in diagnosing and treating AD in children. The group with higher self-confidence was significantly older (44.39 vs. 39.14 years, P = 0.003), had more years of experience in evaluating pediatric AD (P = 0.004), had trained in dermatology during their residency (P = 0.02) with a longer training period (P = 0.01), and with more than three training methods (P = 0.009). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that high self-confidence was associated with age older than 40 years and training in dermatology during residency (odds ratios = 5.63 [P = 0.04] and 3.36 [P = 0.05], respectively).  Conclusion: Most pediatric residents and pediatricians were not particularly confident in treating children with AD. Those with high self-confidence were older, had been exposed to more patients, and had been trained in dermatology during their residency with various methods and for longer periods. Therefore, we encourage the implementation of a training program in dermatology during pediatric residency programs. What is Known: • Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of childhood's most common skin conditions and often presents to pediatricians for diagnosis and management. • Many pediatricians refer children with even mild cases of AD to dermatologists. What is New: • Most pediatric residents and pediatricians report low confidence in diagnosing and treating pediatric AD. • Physicians with high self- confidence were older, exposed to more AD patients, and had been trained in dermatology during their residency with various methods and for longer periods. Therefore, the implementation of a training program in dermatology during pediatric residency programs is warranted.

BACKGROUND: The effect of physical activity (PA) and physical fitness (PF) on self-confidence and interpersonal relations in adolescents is uncertain. AIM: To analyzed the associations of PA and PF with self-confidence and interpersonal relations in adolescents. SAMPLE: A total of 268 (138 boys) adolescents (13.9 ± 0.3 years) from the DADOS study were included in the analysis. METHODS: PA was evaluated using GENEActiv accelerometers and the health-related PF components by the ALPHA health-related fitness test battery. The levels of self-confidence and interpersonal relations were determined by the Behavior Assessment System for Children Level 3. RESULTS: The associations of PA levels and PF components with self-confidence reported positive associations of moderate-vigorous PA (MVPA), standing long jump, and 20-m shuttle run (shuttle run test) tests (all p < 0.05), and negative association of 4 × 10-m shuttle run test (4 × 10-m test), but only the 4 × 10-m test remained significant in the adjusted model for the whole sample and only in boys (p ≤ 0.01) when analyzed by sex. Regarding interpersonal relations, positive associations of standing long jump and shuttle run test (all p < 0.05), and negative association of 4 × 10-m test were found in all the adolescents. The shuttle run test was associated with interpersonal relations in boys independently of confounders. PA levels were not associated with interpersonal relations. CONCLUSION: A higher level of lower-limb muscle strength, speed-agility, and cardiorespiratory fitness might improve self-confidence and interpersonal relations in adolescents, but these relationships seem to be influenced by sex, body mass index, and pubertal status. Speed-agility and cardiorespiratory fitness seem to have a stronger impact on boys. MVPA may improve self-confidence in adolescents.

Strengthening social support has been recognized as a potentially effective strategy to enhance parenting self-efficacy, but empirical evidence is limited. This study examined the association between perceived social support and parenting self-efficacy.Data of 647 parents of children aged 0-8 years, gathered in the CIKEO cohort study in the Netherlands, were analysed. Data were collected between October 2017 and December 2019. Multivariable linear regression models were used to examine the association between social support and parenting self-efficacy. The mean age of the participants was 33.8 years (SD = 4.9); 94.9% mothers. At the start of the study, 15.1% parents perceived low to moderate social support. Parents who experienced lower levels of social support at the start of the study reported lower parenting self-efficacy at follow-up (ß: 0.13; 95% CI: 0.05, 0.21), independent of potential socio-demographic confounders. Experiencing an increase in perceived social support during the study period was associated with an increase in parenting self-efficacy (ß: 0.15; 95% CI: 0.10, 0.21). Our findings indicate perceived social support is associated with parenting self-efficacy among parents of children aged 0-8 years. Future longitudinal studies need to confirm our findings and may examine which social support interventions are effective in strengthening parenting self-efficacy.

INTRODUCTION: Gender disparities exist in the OBGYN discipline. This study investigates, for the first time, whether gender impacts on the confidence of practical and surgical skills among OBGYN residents, and of being prepared to work as a specialist. METHODS: The gynecological societies of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland established a web-based survey of 30 questions that was sent to all registered OBGYN members-in-training from August to September 2020. Data collection, controlling and analysis were performed by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH). RESULTS: A total of 422 participants took part in the survey, of which 375 (88.9%) were female, 46 (10.9%) were male, and one (0.2%) was divers. The diverse participant was excluded from further analyses. The gender distribution was comparable in all three countries. Multiple regression analyses showed that gender is an independent variable significantly impacting on the confidence levels in performing standard gynaecological (p = 0.03) and obstetric (p < 0.001) procedures. Similarly, the feeling of confidence in being prepared for working as a specialist in a clinic showed to be gender-dependent (p < 0.001), however, not the feeling of being prepared for working as specialist in an outpatient setting (p = 0.37). The "female factor" significantly decreases the confidence rating for surgical and practical skills and for working in a hospital. Covariates including year of training, country, workload, receiving regular feedback, and implemented simulation training were included in all analyses. DISCUSSION: Improvements of residency programs to promote female doctors to overcome factors reducing their confidence in their own OBGYN skills are highly warranted.

OBJECTIVE: Clerkship is crucial for fourth-year medical students before entering the clinical environment. However, lack of confidence impairs clerks' performance during the clinical rotation. We assess the impact of formative Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) with immediate feedback on surgical clerks' self-confidence and clinical competence. METHODS: This is a prospective randomized controlled study. Thirty-eight fourth-year medical students starting their surgical clerkship were randomly divided into the control group (n = 19) and the OSCE group (n = 19), where an extra 6-station formative OSCE was given prior to the surgical rotation with immediate feedback on the participant's performance. Self-confidence assessment (SCA) was collected from each participant before, right after the formative OSCE and one month later. Clinical competence was assessed using a mini-clinical evaluation exercise (mini-CEX) with a case of acute abdominal pain and direct observation of procedural skills (DOPS) with incision and suture one month later. RESULTS: The SCAs were significantly improved in the OSCE group right after the training, and a month later, compared to the control group. The mini-CEX score was significantly higher in the OSCE group compared to the control group, but not the DOPS score of incision and suture. CONCLUSION: The formative OSCE with immediate feedback could significantly enhance surgical clerks' self-confidence and their clinical competence when taking the history, performing the physical examination, and in clinical reasoning; however, the formative OSCE did not improve their dexterity in performing the procedural skills.

BACKGROUND: Considering the positive influence of simulation from previous literature may encourage educators to regard it as a valuable teaching strategy in nursing schools. This literature review aims to investigate whether the use of simulation improves undergraduate nurses' self-confidence during clinical practice. METHODOLOGY: This study employed a literature-based design. Five academic databases, including CINAHL, EBSCO, ProQuest, PubMed and Medline, were utilised to extract relevant studies using appropriate keywords and Boolean operators. Studies published in the last 15 years (2005-2020) were included in the search. Studies were retrieved using the Exclusion and Inclusion criteria. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) was used to critically appraise the studies. RESULTS: A total of 15 primary research studies were extracted for review. Four major themes emerged from the review: Improved self-confidence to carry out clinical tasks, Increased ability to work in teams, Improved self-confidence to perform community work and Improved self-confidence in communicating with patients and team members. CONCLUSION: Clinical simulation is a useful tool in increasing the self-confidence of nursing students to perform clinical tasks, make clinical judgements, communicate with patients and team members and improve their teamwork. To improve the quality of care received by patients, it is recommended that clinical simulations be integrated into the nursing curriculum in Saudi Arabia. Increasing the confidence of students has been shown to be associated with greater confidence in performing clinical tasks.
