RESUMO

Acute physical activity leads to several changes in metabolic, cardiovascular, and immune pathways. Although studies have examined selected changes in these pathways, the system-wide molecular response to an acute bout of exercise has not been fully characterized. We performed longitudinal multi-omic profiling of plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells including metabolome, lipidome, immunome, proteome, and transcriptome from 36 well-characterized volunteers, before and after a controlled bout of symptom-limited exercise. Time-series analysis revealed thousands of molecular changes and an orchestrated choreography of biological processes involving energy metabolism, oxidative stress, inflammation, tissue repair, and growth factor response, as well as regulatory pathways. Most of these processes were dampened and some were reversed in insulin-resistant participants. Finally, we discovered biological pathways involved in cardiopulmonary exercise response and developed prediction models revealing potential resting blood-based biomarkers of peak oxygen consumption.

BACKGROUND: People with HIV (PWH) have lower exercise capacity compared to peers without HIV, which may be explained by chronotropic incompetence (CI), the inability to increase heart rate during exercise. METHODS: The Exercise for Healthy Aging Study included adults ages 50-75 with and without HIV. Participants completed 12 weeks of moderate intensity exercise, before randomization to moderate or high intensity for 12 additional weeks. We compared adjusted heart rate reserve (AHRR; CI <80%) on cardiopulmonary exercise testing by HIV serostatus and change from baseline to 12 and 24 weeks using mixed effects models. RESULTS: Among 32 PWH and 37 controls (median age 56, 7% female, mean BMI 28 kg/m2), 28% of PWH compared to 11% of controls had CI at baseline (p = 0.067). AHRR was lower among PWH (91 vs 101%; difference 10%, 95% CI 1.9-18.9; p = 0.02). At week 12, AHRR normalized among PWH (+8%, 95% CI 4-11; p < 0.001) and was sustained at week 24 (+5, 95%CI 1-9; p = 0.008) compared to no change among controls (95%CI -4 to 4; p = 0.95; pinteraction = 0.004). After 24 weeks of exercise, only 15% PWH and 10% of controls had CI (p = 0.70). CONCLUSIONS: Chronotropic incompetence contributes to reduced exercise capacity among PWH and improves with exercise training.

Vanadium oxides have aroused attention as cathode materials in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) due to their low cost and high safety. However, low ion diffusion and vanadium dissolution often lead to capacity decay and deteriorating stability during cycling. Herein, vanadium dioxides (VO2) nanobelts are coated with a single-atom cobalt dispersed N-doped carbon (Co-N-C) layer via a facile calcination strategy to form Co-N-C layer coated VO2 nanobelts (VO2@Co-N-C NBs) for cathodes in AZIBs. Various in-/ex situ characterizations demonstrate the interfaces between VO2 layers and Co-N-C layers can protect the VO2 NBs from collapsing, increase ion diffusion, and enhance the Zn2+ storage performance. Additional density functional theory (DFT) simulations demonstrate that Co─O─V bonds between VO2 and Co-N-C layers can enhance interfacial Zn2+ storage. Moreover, the VO2@Co-N-C NBs provided an ultrahigh capacity (418.7 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1), outstanding long-term stability (over 8000 cycles at 20 A g-1), and superior rate performance.

In this paper, periodic arrays of identicalV-shaped gold nanostructures and variableV-shaped gold nanostructures are designed on top of a gold-coated silicon dioxide (SiO2) substrate with a thin spacer layer of vanadium dioxide (VO2) to realize multi-wavelength and broadband plasmonic switches, respectively. The periodic array of identicalV-shaped nanostructures (IVNSs) with small inter-particle separation leads to coupled interactions of the elementary plasmons of aV-shaped nanostructure (VNS), resulting in a hybridized plasmon response with two longitudinal plasmonic modes in the reflectance spectra of the proposed switches when the incident light is polarized in thex-direction. Thex-direction is oriented along the axis that joins theV-junctions of all VNSs in one unit cell of the periodic array. On exposure to temperature, electric field, or optical stimulus, the VO2layer transforms from its monoclinic semiconducting state to its rutile metallic state, leading to an overall change in the reflectance spectra obtained from the proposed nanostructures and resulting in an efficient multi-wavelength switching action. Finite difference time domain modelling is employed to demonstrate that an extinction ratio (ER) >12 dB at two wavelengths can be achieved by employing the proposed switches based on periodic arrays of IVNSs. Further, plasmonic switches based on variableV-shaped nanostructures-i.e. multiple VNSs with variable arm lengths in one unit cell of a periodic array-are proposed for broadband switching. In the broadband operation mode, we report an ER >5 dB over an operational wavelength range >1400 nm in the near-IR spectral range spanning over all optical communication bands, i.e. theO, E, S, C, LandUbands. Further, it is also demonstrated that the wavelength of operation for these switches can be tuned by varying the geometrical parameters of the proposed switches. These switches have the potential to be employed in communication networks where ultrasmall and ultrafast switches with multi-wavelength operation or switching over a wide operational bandwidth are inevitably required.

Face masks were recognized as one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus in adults. These benefits were extended to children and adolescents. However, the fear of negative consequences from wearing a face mask during physical exercise led to cancellations of physical education lessons. This further decreased the amount of physical activity available to children and adolescents during the pandemic. However, there is little published data on the potential adverse effects of wearing the most effective and partially mandatory FFP2/N95 face masks during PE or physical activity (PA) in this age. Even though the pandemic has been declared as passed by the WHO, the rise of a new pandemic and thus the use of face masks for limiting its spread is inevitable, so we need to be better prepared for alternative options to lockdown and limitation of PA in such a scenario. Twenty healthy children aged 8-10 years performed two identical cardiopulmonary exercise tests as an incremental step test on a treadmill within an interval of 2 weeks, one time without wearing a protective mask and one time wearing an FFP2 mask. The cardiopulmonary exercise parameter and especially the end-expiratory gas exchange for oxygen and carbon dioxide (petO2 and petCO2) were documented for each step, at rest and 1 min after reaching physical exhaustion. Twelve boys (mean age 8.5 ± 1.4 years) and 8 girls (mean age 8.8 ± 1.4 years) showed no adverse events until maximal exertion. The mean parameters measured at peak exercise did not differ significantly between both examinations (mean peak VO2 = 42.7 ± 9.5 vs 47.8 ± 12.9 ml/min/kg, p = 0.097, mean O2pulse 7.84 ± 1.9 ml/min vs. 6.89 ± 1.8, p = 0.064, mean VE/VCO2slope 33.4 ± 5.9 vs. 34.0 ± 5.3, p = 0.689). The only significant difference was the respiratory exchange rate (RER, 1.01 ± 0.08 vs 0.95 ± 0.08, p = 0.004). The measured respiratory gases (end-tidal O2 and CO2) decreased and respectively increased significantly in almost every step when wearing an FFP2 mask. However, these levels were well below hypercapnia and above hypoxia. CONCLUSION:  In this study, no significant differences in the cardiorespiratory function at peak exercise could be discerned when wearing an FFP2/N95 face mask. While the end-tidal values for CO2 increased significantly and the end-tidal values for O2 decreased significantly, these values did never reach levels of hypercapnia or hypoxia. Furthermore, the children terminated the exercise at a lower RER and heart rate (HR) suggesting a subconscious awareness of the higher strain. Since the detrimental effects of limiting sports during the pandemic are well documented, stopping PE lessons altogether because of the minor physiological effects of wearing these masks instead of simply stopping pushing children to perform at their best seems premature and should be reconsidered in the future. WHAT IS KNOWN: • Wearing a face mask has an influence on psychological, social, and physiological functions in adults. • Because of the observed effects of wearing face masks in adults, physical activity in children was limited during the pandemic. WHAT IS NEW: • Wearing an FFP2/N95 mask during physical activity did not lead to hypercapnia or hypoxia in children in this study. • Even though end-tidal CO2 values were significantly higher and end-tidal O2 values significantly lower when wearing an FFP2/N95 face mask, no pathological values were reached.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect sizes of different HIIT protocols on cardiorespiratory parameters when compared with the MICT in different HF subtypes. DATA SOURCES: Electronic databases were searched from their inception date until January 23rd, 2023. STUDY SELECTION: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included if they compared HIIT to MICT in HF patients. The primary outcomes was peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak). Two reviewers independently evaluated 99 initially identified studies, resulting in the selection of 15 RCTs that met the eligibility criteria. DATA EXTRACTION: Data was extracted independently by two observers using data extraction form drafted based on the CONSORT statement and the TIDieR; and the The methodological quality of the studies was analyzed individually based on the TESTEX scale. DATA SYNTHESIS: Fifteen RCTs with 553 HF patients were included in the systematic review. The studies included had moderate to good overall methodological quality. The results showed that HIIT was generally more effective than MICT at improving VO2peak in HF patients (n=541, 15 RCT; MD: 1.49 mL/kg/min, I2=66%, p<0.001). However, the effect size varied depending on the HF subtype and HIIT protocol used. For HFrEF patients, the long-interval (high-intensity interval lasting≥ 4 min) and high-volume HIIT (high-intensity efforts in total ≥ 15 min) showed the largest benefits over the MICT (n=261, 6 RCT; MD: 2.11 mL/kg/min, p<0.001); followed by the short-interval (≤ 1 min) and high-volume HIIT (≥ 15 min; n=71, 3 RCT; MD: 0.91 mL/kg/min, p=0.12); and the short-interval and low-volume HIIT showed the least superiority over MICT (n=68, 3 RCT; MD: 0.54 mL/kg/min; p=0.05). For HFpEF patients, there was a modest beneficial effect from HIIT over MICT (n=141, 3 RCT; MD: 0.55 mL/kg/min; p=0.32). CONCLUSIONS: The long-interval and high-volume HIIT protocol may produce greater benefits than MICT for improving cardiopulmonary fitness in HFrEF patients. Further research is needed to determine the optimal HIIT protocol for different HF subtypes and to provide definitive recommendations for clinical practice.

During prolonged running at moderate-to-high intensity, running economy (RE) deteriorates and attainable maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) decreases. Whether these changes appear similarly in trained and untrained runners exercising at the same relative intensity is not clear. We recruited 10 trained runners (TR) and 10 active adults (AA), and compared RE and attainable VO2max before and after 1 h of running at 70% of VO2max. Submaximal VO2 increased more (p = 0.019) in AA (0.20 ± 0.13 L min-1) than in TR (0.07 ± 0.05 L min-1). Attainable VO2max decreased in AA (-0.21 ± 0.15 L min-1, p = 0.002), but remained unchanged in TR (-0.05 ± 0.10 L min-1, p = 0.18). Relative intensity (i.e., VO2/attainable VO2max), increased more (p = 0.001) in AA (8.3 ± 4.4%) than in TR (2.6 ± 1.9%). These results demonstrate that the ability to resist changes in RE and VO2max following prolonged running is superior in trained versus untrained runners, when exercising at the same relative intensity.

RESUMO

Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) spectroscopy is a powerful technique for characterizing the local structure and dynamics of battery and other materials. It has been widely used to investigate bulk electrode compounds, electrolytes, and interfaces. Beside common ex situ investigations, in situ and operando techniques have gained considerable importance for understanding the reaction mechanisms and cell degradation of electrochemical cells. Herein, we present the recent development of in situ magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR methodologies to study batteries with high spectral resolution, setting into context possible advances on this topic. A mini cylindrical cell type insert for 4 mm MAS rotors is introduced here, being demonstrated on a Li/VO2F electrochemical system, allowing the acquisition of high-resolution 7Li MAS NMR spectra, spinning the electrochemical cell up to 15 kHz.

AIMS: Submaximal tests estimating VO2max have inherent biases; hence, using VO2max estimations from the same test is essential for reducing this bias. This study aimed to establish sex- and age-specific reference values for estimated VO2max using the Åstrand-test (Å-test) and the Ekblom-Bak test (EB-test). We also assessed the effects of age, exercise level, and BMI on VO2max estimations. METHODS: We included men and women (20-69 years) from the Swedish working population participating in Health Profile Assessments between 2010 and 2020. Excluding those on heart rate-affecting medicines and smokers, n = 263,374 for the Å-test and n = 95,043 for the EB-test were included. VO2max reference values were based on percentiles 10, 25, 40, 60, 75, and 90 for both sexes across 5-year age groups. RESULTS: Estimated absolute and relative VO2max were for men 3.11 L/min and 36.9 mL/min/kg using the Å-test, and 3.58 L/min and 42.4 mL/min/kg using the EB-test. For women, estimated absolute and relative VO2max were 2.48 L/min and 36.6 mL/min/kg using the Å-test, and 2.41 L/min and 35.5 mL/min/kg using the EB-test. Higher age (negative), higher exercise level (positive), and higher BMI (negative) were associated with estimated VO2max using both tests. However, explained variance by exercise on estimated VO2max was low, 10% for the Å-test and 8% for the EB-test, and moderate for BMI, 23% and 29%. CONCLUSION: We present reference values for estimated VO2max from two submaximal cycle tests. Age, exercise, and BMI influenced estimated VO2max. These references can be valuable in clinical evaluations using the same submaximal tests.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the health and exercise performance effects of street football training on very small pitches surrounded by boards in young habitually active men in comparison to small-sided football training on grass. METHODS: Thirty-nine habitually active men (30.7 ± 6.7 years, 90.9 ± 16.6 kg, 183.8 ± 4.5 cm, 39.6 ± 6.0 mL/min/kg) were randomly assigned to a street football training group (ST) or grass football group (GR) playing small-sided games for 70 min, 1.5 and 1.7 times per week for 12 weeks, respectively, or an inactive control group (CO). Intensity during training was measured using heart rate (HR) and GPS units. Pre- and post-intervention, a test battery was completed. RESULTS: Mean HR (87.1 ± 5.0 vs. 84.0 ± 5.3%HRmax; P > 0.05) and percentage of training time above 90%HRmax (44 ± 28 vs. 34 ± 24%; P > 0.05) were not different between ST and GR. VO2max increased (P < 0.001) by 3.6[95% CI 1.8;5.4]mL/min/kg in GR with no significant change in ST or CO. HR during running at 8 km/h decreased (P < 0.001) by 14[10;17]bpm in ST and by 12[6;19]bpm in GR, with no change in CO. No changes were observed in blood pressure, resting HR, total body mass, lean body mass, whole-body bone mineral density, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, plasma insulin, total cholesterol(C), LDL-C or HDL-C. Moreover, no changes were observed in Yo-Yo IE2 performance, 30-m sprint time, jump length or postural balance. CONCLUSION: Small-sided street football training for 12 weeks with 1-2 weekly sessions led to improvements in submaximal exercise capacity only, whereas recreational grass football training confirmed previous positive effects on submaximal exercise capacity as well as cardiorespiratory fitness.

PURPOSE: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is critical for cardiovascular health. Normal-weight obesity (NWO) and metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) may be at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, but a comparison of CRF and submaximal exercise dynamics against rigorously defined low- and high-risk groups is lacking. METHODS: Four groups (N = 40; 10/group) based on body mass index (BMI), body fat %, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk factors were recruited: healthy controls (CON; BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2, body fat < 25% [M] or < 35% [F], 0-1 risk factors), NWO (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2, body fat ≥ 25% [M] or ≥ 35% [F]), MHO (BMI > 30 kg/m2, body fat ≥ 25% [M] or ≥ 35% [F], 0-1 risk factors), or metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO; BMI > 30 kg/m2, body fat ≥ 25% [M] or ≥ 35% [F], 2 + risk factors). All participants completed a V ˙ O2peak test on a cycle ergometer. RESULTS: V ˙ O2peak was similarly low in NWO (27.0 ± 4.8 mL/kg/min), MHO (25.4 ± 6.7 mL/kg/min) and MUO (24.6 ± 10.0 mL/kg/min) relative to CON (44.2 ± 11.0 mL/kg/min) when normalized to total body mass (p's < 0.01), and adjusting for fat mass or lean mass did not alter these results. This same differential V ˙ O2 pattern was apparent beginning at 25% of the exercise test (PGroup*Time < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: NWO and MHO had similar peak and submaximal CRF to MUO, despite some favorable health traits. Our work adds clarity to the notion that excess adiposity hinders CRF across BMI categories. VO2 has shown great promise for sensors, smart windows, and energy storage devices, because of its drastic semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT) near 340 K coupled with a structural transition. To push its application toward room-temperature, effective transition temperature (Tc) tuning in VO2 is desired. In this study, tailorable SMT characteristics in VO2 films have been achieved by the electrochemical intercalation of foreign ions (e.g., Li ions). By controlling the relative potential with respect to Li/Li+ during the intercalation process, Tc of VO2 can be effectively and systematically tuned in the window from 326.7 to 340.8 K. The effective Tc tuning could be attributed to the observed strain and lattice distortion and the change of the charge carrier density in VO2 introduced by the intercalation process. This demonstration opens up a new approach in tuning the VO2 phase transition toward room-temperature device applications and enables future real-time phase change property tuning.

The elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in cancer patients and survivors is likely the result of normal age-related pathologies coupled with the direct and indirect effects of cancer therapy that extend across multiple systems. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) on CVD patients with a history of cancer.In this study, patients who had participated in the outpatient CR program were enrolled and were divided into 2 groups (cancer survivor group and no-cancer group) based on their history of cancer. The cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) was performed at the beginning (baseline) and at the end of the CR program (follow-up). The results of CPET at baseline and those at follow-up were analyzed retrospectively.A total of 105 patients were analyzed in this study. The cancer survivor group had 25 patients, and the non-cancer group 80. At baseline, peak oxygen uptake (peak VO2) (14.7 [11.9 to 17.6] mL/kg/minute versus 11.3 [9.7 to 14.7] mL/kg/minute; P = 0.003) was significantly lower in cancer survivors. The percent changes in peak VO2 between baseline and follow-up were not significantly different between the 2 groups (7.9 % [-11.5 to 24.5] versus 9.4 % [-7.5 to 27.3] P = 0.520).The percent changes in peak VO2 of CR participants were not significantly different despite their cancer history.

Due to the versatile bioreactivity of aroyldihydrazone complexes as cost-effective alternatives with different transition metals, two novel bimetallic homo-complexes (VOLph and CuLph) were prepared via the coordination of a terephthalic dihydrazone diisatin ligand (H2Lph) with VO2+ and Cu2+ ions, respectively. The structure elucidation was confirmed by alternative spectral methods. Biologically, the H2Lph ligand and its MLph complexes (M2+ = VO2+ or Cu2+) were investigated as antimicrobial and anticancer agents. Their biochemical activities towards ctDNA (calf thymus DNA) were estimated using measurable titration viscometrically and spectrophotometrically, as well as the gel electrophoresis technique. The growth inhibition of both VOLph and CuLph complexes against microbial and cancer cells was measured, and the inhibition action, MIC, and IC50 were compared to the inhibition action of the free H2Lph ligand. Both VOLph and CuLph showed remarkable interactive binding with ctDNA compared to the free ligand H2Lph, based on Kb = 16.31, 16.04 and 12.41 × 107 mol-1 dm3 and ΔGb≠ = 47.11, -46.89, and -44.05 kJ mol-1 for VOLph, CuLph, and H2Lph, respectively, due to the central metal ion (VIVO and CuII ions). VOLph (with a higher oxidation state of the V4+ ion and oxo-ligand) exhibited enhanced interaction with the ctDNA molecule compared to CuLph, demonstrating the role and type of the central metal ion within the performed electronegative and electrophilic characters.

Recent research has shown more favorable training adaptations for inactive adults when cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) exercise is prescribed with the use of ventilatory thresholds compared to percentages of heart rate reserve (HRR). However, there is limited research on changes in health-related outcomes with the use of these CRF methods in combination with muscular fitness exercises. The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two training programs for improving CRF, muscular fitness, and cardiometabolic risk factors. Inactive men and women (n=109, aged 49.3±15.5 years) were randomized to a non-exercise control group or one of two exercise training groups. The exercise training groups consisted of 13 weeks of structured exercise with progression using either CRF exercise prescribed with the use of ventilatory thresholds and functional training for muscular fitness (THRESH group) or HRR and traditional muscular fitness training (STND group). After the 13-week protocol, there were significant differences in body weight, body composition, systolic blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), VO2max, 5-repetition maximum (RM) bench press, and 5-RM leg press for both treatment groups compared to the control group after controlling for baseline values. However, the THRESH group had significantly more desirable outcomes for VO2max, 5-RM bench press, 5-RM leg press, body composition, and HDL-c when compared to both the STND and control group. Additionally, the proportion of individuals estimated as likely to respond above 3.5 mL·kg-1·min-1 in VO2max (i.e., the minimal clinically important difference) was 76.4%, 20.8%, and 0.13% for the THRESH, STND, and control groups, respectively. While both exercise programs elicited favorable health-related adaptations after 13 weeks, these results suggest that a personalized program with exercise prescribed based on ventilatory threshold and with the use of functional muscular fitness training may yield greater training adaptations.

There is a lack of knowledge regarding the contribution of central and peripheral factors to the increases in VO2max following sprint-interval training (SIT). This study investigated the importance of maximal cardiac output (Qmax ) in relation to VO2max improvements following SIT and the relative importance of the hypervolemic response on Qmax and VO2max . We also investigated whether systemic O2 extraction increased with SIT as has been previously suggested. Healthy men and women (n = 9) performed 6 weeks of SIT. State-of-the-art measurements: right heart catheterization, carbon monoxide rebreathing and respiratory gas exchange analysis were used to assess Qmax , arterial O2 content (ca O2 ), mixed venous O2 content (cv O2 ), blood volume (BV) and VO2max before and after the intervention. In order to assess the relative contribution of the hypervolemic response to the increases in VO2max , BV was re-established to pre-training levels by phlebotomy. Following the intervention, VO2max , BV and Qmax increased by 11% (P < 0.001), 5.4% (P = 0.013) and 8.8% (P = 0.004), respectively. cv O2 decreased by 12.4% (P = 0.011) and systemic O2 extraction increased by 4.0% (P = 0.009) during the same period, both variables were unaffected by phlebotomy (P = 0.589 and P = 0.548, respectively). After phlebotomy, VO2max and Qmax reverted back to pre-intervention values (P = 0.064 and P = 0.838, respectively) and were significantly lower compared with post-intervention (P = 0.016 and P = 0.018, respectively). The decline in VO2max after phlebotomy was linear to the amount of blood removed (P = 0.007, R = -0.82). The causal relationship between BV, Qmax and VO2max shows that the hypervolemic response is a key mediator of the increases in VO2max following SIT. KEY POINTS: Sprint-interval training (SIT) is an exercise model involving supramaximal bouts of exercise interspersed with periods of rest known for its efficiency in improving maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max ). In contrast to the commonly accepted view where central haemodynamic adaptations are considered to be the key mediators of increases in VO2max there have been propositions highlighting peripheral adaptations as the main mediators in the context of SIT-induced changes in VO2max . By combining right heart catheterization, carbon monoxide rebreathing and phlebotomy, this study shows that increases in maximal cardiac output due to the expansion of the total blood volume is a major explanatory factor for the improvement in VO2max following SIT, with a smaller contribution from improved systemic oxygen extraction. The present work not only clarifies a controversy in the field by using state-of-the-art methods, but also encourages future research to investigate regulatory mechanisms that could explain how SIT can lead to improvements in VO2max and maximal cardiac output similar to those that have previously been reported for traditional endurance exercise.

VO2 material, as a promising intercalation host, is widely investigated not only in aqueous lithium-ion batteries, but also in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) owing to its stable tunnel-like framework and multivalence of vanadium. Different from lithium-ion storage, VO2 can provide higher capacity when storing zinc ions, even exceeding its theoretical capacity (323 mAh g-1 ), but the specific reason for this unconventional performance in AZIBs is still unclear. The present study proposes a catalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) coupled with an interface oxidation mechanism of VO2 during the initial charging to a high voltage. This coupling induces a phase transformation of VO2 into a high oxidation state of V5 O12 ∙6H2 O, enabling a nearly two-electron reaction and providing additional zinc storage sites to achieve super-theoretical capacity. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that these vanadium oxide cathodes (V2 O3 , VO2 , and V2 O5 ) will all undergo phase change after the first charge or short cycle. Notably, water molecules participate in the final formation of layered vanadium-based hydrate, highlighting their crucial role as "pillars" for stabilizing the structure. This work significantly enhances the understanding of vanadium-based oxide cathodes.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries have received continuous interests because of applying low-cost and eco-friendly aqueous electrolytes and having high safety. Beyond energetically to explore new-type cathode materials, it is of great significance to regulate the zinc storage behavior of the existing cathodes in order to understand the underlying working mechanism. Therefore, as a proof of concept, this work achieves the regulation of zinc storage behaviors of the tunnel structure tunnel structure B-phase vanadium dioxide (VO2 (B)) and vanadium oxide (V6 O13 ) cathodes via a simple chemical tungsten-doping induction approach. Under low-concentration tungsten-doping induction of 1, 2 and 3 at.%, the tunnel sizes of VO2 (B) can be controlled readily. Moreover, the V6 O13 with large size tunnels can be achieved by medium-concentration tungsten induction of 6 and 9 at.%. It is demonstrated that tungsten induced VO2 (B) can achieve zinc storage without lattice structure change via operando X-ray diffraction analyses. Remarkably, via operando and non-operando analyses, tungsten induced V6 O13 with lager size tunnels can realize the oriented 1D zinc ion intercalation/deintercalation. The further kinetics analysis shows that the zinc storage is mainly diffusion control, which is different from most of vanadium-based cathodes with capacitance control. This viable tungsten-doping induction strategy provides a new insight into achieving the controllable regulation of zinc storage behaviors.

OBJECTIVES: JIA is the most common type of arthritis in children and adolescents, causing joint damage, chronic pain and disability. Deconditioning is also prevalent in patients with JIA due to both inactivity and the disease progression, resulting in reduced cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). We aimed to evaluate CRF of patients with JIA compared with healthy controls. METHODS: This is a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies using cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) to examine differences in determinants of CRF between patients with JIA vs healthy controls. The primary outcome was peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak). Literature search involved PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases, manual search of article references and grey literature. Quality assessment was undertaken with Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. RESULTS: From 480 literature records initially retrieved, eight studies (538 participants) were included in final meta-analysis. VO2peak was significantly lower in patients with JIA compared with controls [weighted mean difference (WMD): -5.95 ml/kg/min (95% CI -9.26, -2.65)]. Exercise duration and VO2peak (% predicted) were found to be significantly impaired in patients with JIA compared with controls [standardized mean difference: -0.67 (95% CI -1.04, -0.29) and WMD: -11.31% (95% CI -20.09, -2.53), respectively], while no significant differences were found in maximum heart rate. CONCLUSION: VO2peak and other CPET variables were lower in patients with JIA compared with controls, indicating reduced CRF in the former. Overall, exercise programs for patients with JIA should be promoted as part of their treatment to improve physical fitness and reduce muscle atrophy. PROSPERO REGISTRATION: CRD42022380833.

BACKGROUND: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) of 4 minutes at 80%-90% of peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) has been shown to be feasible in patients with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). The effect of shorter bouts of HIIT, which reduce the anaerobic burden, has not been investigated compared to moderate continuous training (MCT). METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a prospective, monocentric study (NCT05121077) randomizing patients with LVADs into 20 minutes of MCT (n = 10) or short bouts (≤ 90 seconds) of HIIT (n = 10) following cardiopulmonary exercise testing at 50%-60% and 80%-90% of VO2peak. Each of the 18 supervised sessions (3×/week, t0-t1) included 10 minutes of strengthening training. The primary outcome was the increase of VO2peak in the 2 groups between t0 and t1. Secondary outcomes were changes in the 12-item Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire, the 6-minute walk distance and the percentage of VO2peak at the first ventilatory threshold. VO2peak significantly increased with HIIT (13.0 ± 4.6mL/kg/min vs 14.6 ± 4.3mL/kg/min; P = 0.037), but not with MCT (11.8 ± 3.3mL/kg/min vs 13.1 ± 3.3mL/kg/min; P = 0.322), without between-group differences (P = 0.853). Secondary outcomes improved from t0-t1 in MCT and HIIT, without differences between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Short bouts of HIIT are feasible, and they improved VO2peak and functional parameters in patients in this pilot prospective study.
