RESUMO

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are considered one of the promising candidates for energy storage devices due to the low cost and low redox potential of sodium. However, their implementation is hindered by sluggish kinetics and rapid capacity decay caused by inferior conductivity, lattice deterioration, and volume changes of conversion-type anode materials. Herein, we report the design of a multicore-shell anode material based on manganese selenide (MnSe) nanoparticle encapsulated N-doped carbon (MnSe@NC) nanorods. Benefiting from the conductive multicore-shell structure, the MnSe@NC anodes displayed prominent rate capability (152.7 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1) and long lifespan (132.7 mA h g-1 after 2000 cycles at 5 A g-1), verifying the essence of reasonable anode construction for high-performance SIBs. Systematic in situ microscopic and spectroscopic methods revealed a highly reversible conversion reaction mechanism of MnSe@NC. Our study proposes a promising route toward developing advanced transition metal selenide anodes and comprehending electrochemical reaction mechanisms toward high-performance SIBs.

RESUMO

1T-MoS2 has become an ideal anode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the metastable feature of 1T-MoS2 makes it difficult to directly synthesize under normal conditions. In addition, it easily transforms into 2H phase via restacking, resulting in inferior electrochemical performance. Herein, the electron configuration of Mo 4d orbitals is modulated and the stable 1T-MoS2 is constructed by nickel (Ni) introduction (1T-Ni-MoS2). The original electron configuration of Mo 4d orbitals is changed via the electron injection by Ni, which triggers the phase transition from 2H to 1T phase, thus improving the electrical conductivity and accelerating the redox kinetics of the material. Consequently, 1T-Ni-MoS2 exhibits superior rate capability (266.8 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1) and excellent cycle life (358.7 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 350 cycles). In addition, the assembled Na3V2(PO4)3/C||1T-Ni-MoS2 full cells deliver excellent electrochemical properties and show great prospects in energy storage devices.

RESUMO

With the development of electric vehicles, exploiting anode materials with high capacity and fast charging capability is an urgent requirement for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Borophene, with the merits of high capacity, high electronic conductivity and fast diffusion kinetics, holds great potential as anode for LIBs. However, it is difficult to fabricate for the intrinsic electron-deficiency of boron atom. Herein, heterogeneous-structured MoB2 (h-MoB2) with amorphous shell and crystalline core, is prepared by solid phase molten salt method. As demonstrated, crystalline core can encapsulate the honeycomb borophene within two adjacent Mo atoms, and amorphous shell can accommodate more lithium ions to strengthen the lithium storage capacity and diffusion kinetics. According to theoretical calculations, the lithium adsorption energy in MoB2 is about -2.7 eV, and the lithium diffusion energy barrier in MoB2 is calculated to be 0.199 eV, guaranteeing the enhanced adsorption capability and fast diffusion kinetic behavior of Li+ ions. As a result, h-MoB2 anode presents high capacity of 798 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, excellent rate performance of 183 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 and long-term cyclic stability for 1200 cycles. This work may inspire ideas for the fabrication of borophene analogs and two-dimensional metal borides.

RESUMO

Aqueous iron-ion batteries with reversible storage of Fe2+ have undergone rapid development in recent years. Consistently throughout these studies, metallic iron is selected as the anode material. However, the large overpotential (250 mV) associated with the plating/stripping process of iron in aqueous solutions leads to unsatisfactory energy efficiency of the battery, although high capacity and Coulomb efficiency can be achieved. Herein, an iron-free anode material, 9,10-anthraquinone (AQ) is proposed in aqueous iron-ion batteries, which shows a low reaction potential and minimal polarization during storing iron ions. The organic anode exhibits favorable specific capacity of 106 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 and excellent cycling stability (92.6% retention after 500 cycles). In addition, an aqueous full iron-ion battery is constructed using AQ as the anode and 9,10-phenanthraquinone (PQ) as the cathode. The full battery demonstrates an enhanced energy efficiency of 72%, which is 206% higher than that of metal iron anode, and shows excellent cycling stability and Coulombic efficiency. This work provides a viable route to overcome the high polarization of metallic iron anode and promote the development of aqueous iron-ion batteries.

RESUMO

Because of its high specific capacity and superior rate performance, porous carbon is regarded as a potential anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, porous carbon materials with wide pore diameter distributions suffer from low structural stability and low electrical conductivity during the application process. During this study, the calcium carbonate nanoparticle template method is used to prepare coal tar pitch-derived porous carbon (CTP-X). The coal tar pitch-derived porous carbon has a well-developed macroporous-mesoporous-microporous hierarchical porous network structure, which provides abundant active sites for Li+ storage, significantly reduces polarization and charge transfer resistance, shortens the diffusion path and promotes the rapid transport of Li+. More specifically, the CTP-2 anode shows high charge capacity (496.9 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1), excellent rate performance (413.6 mAh g-1 even at 500 mA g-1), and high cycling stability (capacity retention rate of about 100 % after 1,000 cycles at 2 A g-1). The clean and eco-friendly large-scale utilization of coal tar pitch will facilitate the development of high-performance anodes in the field of LIBs.

RESUMO

Phosphorene has been widely used as anode material for batteries. However, the huge volume change during charging and discharging process, the semiconductor properties, and the high open circuit voltage limit its application. Based on this, by introducing the electron-deficient boron atoms into blue phosphorene, we proposed a P-rich sandwich-like BP4monolayer by density functional theory calculation and particle swarm optimization. The BP4monolayer shows good thermodynamic and dynamic stability, as well as chemical stability in O2atmosphere, mainly due to the strengthened P-P bond of the outer layer by the middle boron atoms adoptingsp3hybridization. According to the band structure, the BP4monolayer shows metallic property, which is beneficial to electron conductivity. Furthermore, compared with blue phosphorene and black phosphorene, the P-rich BP4monolayer shows higher theoretical capacity for Li, Na, and K of 1193.90, 1119.28, and 397.97 mA h g-1, respectively. The lattice constant of BP4monolayer increases only 3.73% (Li), 2.52% (Na) after Li/Na fully adsorbed on the anode. More importantly, the wettability of BP4monolayer in the electrolyte is comparable to that of graphene. These findings show that the stable sandwich-like BP4monolayer has potential as a lightweight anode material.

RESUMO

In sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), TiO2or sodium titanates are discussed as cost-effective anode material. The use of ultrafine TiO2particles overcomes the effect of intrinsically low electronic and ionic conductivity that otherwise limits the electrochemical performance and thus its Na-ion storage capacity. Especially, TiO2nanoparticles integrated in a highly conductive, large surface-area, and stable graphene matrix can achieve an exceptional electrochemical rate performance, durability, and increase in capacity. We report the direct and scalable gas-phase synthesis of TiO2and graphene and their subsequent self-assembly to produce TiO2/graphene nanocomposites (TiO2/Gr). Transmission electron microscopy shows that the TiO2nanoparticles are uniformly distributed on the surface of the graphene nanosheets. TiO2/Gr nanocomposites with graphene loadings of 20 and 30 wt% were tested as anode in SIBs. With the outstanding electronic conductivity enhancement and a synergistic Na-ion storage effect at the interface of TiO2nanoparticles and graphene, nanocomposites with 30 wt% graphene exhibited particularly good electrochemical performance with a reversible capacity of 281 mAh g-1at 0.1 C, compared to pristine TiO2nanoparticles (155 mAh g-1). Moreover, the composite showed excellent high-rate performance of 158 mAh g-1at 20 C and a reversible capacity of 154 mAh g-1after 500 cycles at 10 C. Cyclic voltammetry showed that the Na-ion storage is dominated by surface and TiO2/Gr interface processes rather than slow, diffusion-controlled intercalation, explaining its outstanding rate performance. The synthesis route of these high-performing nanocomposites provides a highly promising strategy for the scalable production of advanced nanomaterials for SIBs.

RESUMO

In this study, Co3O4@MoS2 is prepared as anodic catalytic material for microbial fuel cells (MFCs). As the mass fraction of MoS2 is 20%, the best performance of Co3O4@MoS2 composite catalytic material is achieved, and the addition of MoS2 enhances both the electrical conductivity and catalytic performance of the composite catalyst. Through the structural characterization of Co3O4@MoS2 composite catalytic material, nanorod-like Co3O4 and lamellar MoS2 interweaved and stacked each other, and the agglomeration of Co3O4 is weakened. Among the four groups of single-chamber MFCs constructed, the Co3O4@MoS2-MFC shows the best power production performance with a maximum stable output voltage of to 539 mV and a maximum power density of up to 2221 mW/m2. Additionally, the ammonia nitrogen removal rate of the MFCs loaded with catalysts is enhanced by about 10% compared with the blank carbon cloth MFC. Overall, the findings suggest that Co3O4@MoS2 composite catalysts can significantly improve the performance of MFCs, making them more effective for both energy production and wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have been widely studied owing to the abundant reserves, widespread distribution, and easy extraction of potassium (K) resources. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has received a great deal of attention as a key anode material for PIBs owing to its two-dimensional diffusion channels for K+ ions. However, due to its poor electronic conductivity and the huge influence of embedded K+ ions (with a large ionic radius of 3.6 Å) on MoS2 layer, MoS2 anodes exhibit a poor rate performance and easily collapsed structure. To address these issues, the common strategies are enlarging the interlayer spacing to reduce the mechanical strain and increasing the electronic conductivity by adding conductive agents. However, simultaneous implementation of the above strategies by simple methods is currently still a challenge. Herein, MoS2 anodes on reduced graphene oxide (MoS2/rGO) composite were prepared using one-step hydrothermal methods. Owing to the presence of rGO in the synthesis process, MoS2 possesses a unique scaled structure with large layer spacing, and the intrinsic conductivity of MoS2 is proved. As a result, MoS2/rGO composite anodes exhibit a larger rate performance and better cycle stability than that of anodes based on pure MoS2, and the direct mixtures of MoS2 and graphene oxide (MoS2-GO). This work suggests that the composite material of MoS2/rGO has infinite possibilities as a high-quality anode material for PIBs.

RESUMO

The development of cost-effective transition metal catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for the production of hydrogen fuel from water splitting. Low-cost and efficient stainless steel-based catalysts are expected to replace the scarce platinum group metals for large-scale energy applications. Here in this work, we report the conversion of commonly available inexpensive and easily accessible 434-L stainless steel (SS) into highly active and stable electrodes by corrosion and sulfuration strategies. The Nix Fe1-x S layer as a pre-catalyst and S-doped Nix Fe oxyhydroxides in situ formed on the catalyst surface are the true active species for OER. The optimized 434-L stainless steel-based electrocatalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 298 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH with a small OER kinetics (the Tafel slope of 54.8 mV dec-1 ) and good stability. This work reveals the 434-L alloy stainless steel with Fe and Cr as the main elements can be used as qualified OER catalysts by surface modification, along with a new mentality to solve the energy and resource waste problems.

RESUMO

Generally, graphynes have been generated by the insertion of acetylenic content (-C≡C-) in the graphene network in different ratios. Also, several aesthetically pleasing architectures of two-dimensional (2D) flatlands have been reported with the incorporation of acetylenic linkers between the heteroatomic constituents. Prompted by the experimental realization of boron phosphide, which has provided new insights on the boron-pnictogen family, we have modelled novel forms of acetylene-mediated borophosphene nanosheets by joining the orthorhombic borophosphene stripes with different widths and with different atomic constituents using acetylenic linkers. Structural stabilities and properties of these novel forms have been assessed using first-principles calculations. Investigation of electronic band structure elucidates that all the novel forms show the linear band crossing closer to the Fermi level at Dirac point with distorted Dirac cones. The linearity in the hole and electronic bands impose the high Fermi velocity to the charge carriers close to that of graphene. Finally, we have also unravelled the propitious features of acetylene-mediated borophosphene nanosheets as anodes in Li-ion batteries.

RESUMO

Fe3O4/CNT composites are synthesized with ethylene glycol as solvent by a one-step solvothermal method and used as anode materials for asymmetric supercapacitors (ASC). An appropriate amount of water in ethylene glycol can accelerate the formation of Fe3O4and reduce the average size of Fe3O4to around 20 nm. However, spherical Fe3O4particles larger than 100 nm will form in pure ethylene glycol for long reaction time. The Fe3O4/CNT composite with small Fe3O4nanoparticles exhibits a high specific surface area, promoted electron transfer ability, as well as a high utilization rate of active materials. The optimized electrode shows a high specific capacity of 689 C g-1at 1 A g-1, and remains 443 C g-1at 10 A g-1. The inferior long-term cycling stability is due to the phase transition of Fe3O4and a reductive effect to form metallic Fe. An ASC using Fe3O4/CNT and NiCoO2/C composites as anode and cathode, respectively, delivers a high energy density of 58.1 Wh kg-1at a power density of 1007 W kg-1in a voltage window of 1.67 V and has a capacity retention of 63% after 5000 cycles. The self-discharge behavior of the ASC is also investigated.

RESUMO

Germanium and germanium-based compounds are widely used in microelectronics, optics, solar cells, and sensors. Recently, germanium and its oxides, nitrides, and phosphides have been studied as active electrode materials in lithium- and sodium-ion battery anodes. Herein, the newly introduced highly soluble germanium oxide (HSGO) was used as a versatile precursor for germanium-based functional materials. In the first stage, a germanium-dioxide-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite was obtained by complete precipitation of GeO2 nanoparticles on the GO from an aqueous solution of HSGO and subsequent thermal treatment in argon at low temperature. The composition of the composite, GeO2-rGO (20 to 80 wt.% of crystalline phase), was able to be accurately determined by the HSGO to GO ratio in the initial solution since complete deposition and precipitation were achieved. The chemical activity of germanium dioxide nanoparticles deposited on reduced graphene oxide was shown by conversion to rGO-supported germanium nitride and phosphide phases. The GeP-rGO and Ge3N4-rGO composites with different morphologies were prepared in this study for the first time. As a test case, composite materials with different loadings of GeO2, GeP, and Ge3N4 were evaluated as lithium-ion battery anodes. Reversible conversion-alloying was demonstrated in all cases, and for the low-germanium loading range (20 wt.%), almost theoretical charge capacity based on the germanium content was attained at 100 mA g-1 (i.e., 2595 vs. 2465 mAh g-1 for Ge3N4 and 1790 vs. 1850 mAh g-1 for GeP). The germanium oxide was less efficiently exploited due to its lower conversion reversibility.

RESUMO

Although silicon is being researched as one of the most promising anode materials for future generation lithium-ion batteries owing to its greater theoretical capacity (3579 mAh g-1), its practical applicability is hampered by its worse rate properties and poor cycle performance. Herein, a silicon/graphite/amorphous carbon (Si/G/C) anode composite material has been successfully prepared by a facile spray-drying method followed by heating treatment, exhibiting excellent electrochemical performance compared with silicon/amorphous carbon (Si/C) in lithium-ion batteries. At 0.1 A g-1, the Si/G/C sample exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 1886 mAh g-1, with a high initial coulombic efficiency of 90.18%, the composite can still deliver a high initial charge capacity of 800 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1, and shows a superior cyclic and rate performance compared to the Si/C anode sample. This work provides a facile approach to synthesize Si/G/C composite for lithium-ion batteries and has proven that graphite replacing amorphous carbon can effectively improve the electrochemical performance, even using low-performance micrometer silicon and large size flake graphite.

RESUMO

The high specific capacity of transition metal sulfides (TMSs) opens up a promising new development direction for lithium-ion batteries with high energy storage. However, the poor conductivity and serious volume expansion during charge and discharge hinder their further development. In this work, trimetallic sulfide Zn-Co-Fe-S@nitrogen-doped carbon (Zn-Co-Fe-S@N-C) polyhedron composite with a core-shell structure is synthesized through a simple self-template method using ZnCoFe-ZIF as precursor, followed by a dopamine surface polymerization process and sulfidation during high-temperature calcination. The obvious space between the internal core and the external shell of the Zn-Co-Fe-S@N-C composites can effectively alleviate the volume expansion and shorten the diffusion path of Li ions during charge and discharge cycles. The nitrogen-doped carbon shell not only significantly improves the electrical conductivity of the material, but also strengthens the structural stability of the material. The synergistic effect between polymetallic sulfides improves the electrochemical reactivity. When used as an anode in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the prepared Zn-Co-Fe-S@N-C composite exhibits a high specific capacity retention (966.6 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles at current rate of 100 mA g-1) and good cyclic stability (499.17 mA h g-1 after 120 cycles at current rate of 2000 mA g-1).

RESUMO

Cattail-grass-derived porous carbon as high-capacity anode materials were prepared via high-temperature carbonization and activation with KOH. The samples exhibited different structures and morphologies with increasing treatment time. It was found that the cattail grass with activation treatment-1 (CGA-1) sample obtained at 800 °C for 1 h presented excellent electrochemical performance. As an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, CGA-1 showed a high charge-discharge capacity of 814.7 mAh g-1 at the current density of 0.1 A g-1 after 400 cycles, which suggests that it has a great potential for energy storage.

RESUMO

Due to the low capacity, low working potential, and lithium coating at fast charging rates of graphite material as an anode for Li-ion batteries (LIBs), it is necessary to develop novel anode materials for LIBs with higher capacity, excellent electrochemical stability, and good safety. Among different transition-metal oxides, AB2O4 spinel oxides are promising anode materials for LIBs due to their high theoretical capacities, environmental friendliness, high abundance, and low cost. In this work, a novel, porous Zn0.5Mg0.5FeMnO4 spinel oxide was successfully prepared via the sol-gel method and then studied as an anode material for Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Its crystal structure, morphology, and electrochemical properties were, respectively, analyzed through X-ray diffraction, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry/galvanostatic discharge/charge measurements. From the X-ray diffraction, Zn0.5Mg0.5FeMnO4 spinel oxide was found to crystallize in the cubic structure with Fd3¯m symmetry. However, the Zn0.5Mg0.5FeMnO4 spinel oxide exhibited a porous morphology formed by interconnected 3D nanoparticles. The porous Zn0.5Mg0.5FeMnO4 anode showed good cycling stability in its capacity during the initial 40 cycles with a retention capacity of 484.1 mAh g-1 after 40 cycles at a current density of 150 mA g-1, followed by a gradual decrease in the range of 40-80 cycles, which led to reaching a specific capacity close to 300.0 mAh g-1 after 80 cycles. The electrochemical reactions of the lithiation/delithiation processes and the lithium-ion storage mechanism are discussed and extracted from the cyclic voltammetry curves.

RESUMO

Mn3O4 nano-octahedrons embedded in N-doped graphene oxide (MNGO) nanosheets were synthesized using a simple, energy-efficient, and rapid microwave-digested hydrothermal route in a single step. The structural and morphological aspects of synthesized materials were evaluated by XRD, IR, Raman, FE-SEM, and HR-TEM techniques. Then, the composite MNGO was tested for its Li-ion storage properties and compared with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and Mn3O4 materials. The MNGO composite exhibited superior reversible specific capacity, excellent cyclic stability, and outstanding structural integrity throughout the electrochemical studies. The MNGO composite showed a reversible capacity of 898 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g-1 and Coulombic efficiency of 97.8%. Even at a higher current density of 500 mA g-1, it exhibits a higher specific capacity of 532 mA h g-1 (~1.5 times higher than commercial graphite anode). These results demonstrate that Mn3O4 nano-octahedrons embedded on N-doped GO are a highly durable and potent anode material for LIBs. RESUMO

The poor conductivity of the pristine bulk covalent organic material is the main challenge for its application in energy storage. The mechanism of symmetric alkynyl bonds (C≡C) in covalent organic materials for lithium storage is still rarely reported. Herein, a nanosized (≈80 nm) alkynyl-linked covalent phenanthroline framework (Alkynyl-CPF) is synthesized for the first time to improve the intrinsic charge conductivity and the insolubility of the covalent organic material in lithium-ion batteries. Because of the high degree of electron conjugation along alkynyl units and N atoms from phenanthroline groups, the Alkynyl-CPF electrodes with the lowest HOMO-LUMO energy gap (ΔE=2.629 eV) show improved intrinsic conductivity by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. As a result, the pristine Alkynyl-CPF electrode delivers superior cycling performance with a large reversible capacity and outstanding rate properties (1068.0 mAh g-1 after 300 cycles at 100 mA g-1 and 410.5 mAh g-1 after 700 cycles at 1000 mA g-1 ). Moreover, by Raman, FT-IR, XPS, EIS, and theoretical simulations, the energy-storage mechanism of C≡C units and phenanthroline groups in the Alkynyl-CPF electrode has been investigated. This work provides new strategies and insights for the design and mechanism investigation of covalent organic materials in electrochemical energy storage.

RESUMO

Inferior electrical conductivity and large volume variation are two disadvantages of metal selenides. In this work, we have designed a core-shell structure of FeSe2@C composite with low cost using facile hydrothermal method. The FeSe2particles as the 'core' and the carbon layer as the 'shell' displayed good synergistic effect that attributed to alleviate volume expansion of electrode and improving the electrical conductivity, which achieved the fast potassium storage. The core-shell structural FeSe2@C electrode achieved 286 mA h g-1at 1 A g-1over 1000 cycles with 99.8% coulombic efficiency and delivered excellent rate capacity with 273 mA h g-1at 2 A g-1, which was ascribed to dispersed FeSe2particles and the strong carbon shell coating. This work will provide the basis for the further development of the application of metal selenides in the field of flexible electrodes.
