RESUMO

A metal-free route based on a carbon catalyst to synthesize biphenyls through oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of phenyl cyclohexene has been investigated. Among the samples examined, an air-oxidized active carbon exhibits the best activity with a 9.1 × 10-2 h-1 rate constant, yielding 74% biphenyl in 28 h at 140 °C under five bar O2 in anisole. The apparent activation energy is measured as 54.5 kJ⋅mol-1. The extended reaction scope, consisting of 15 differently substituted phenyl cyclohexenes, shows the wide applicability of the proposed method. The catalyst's good recyclability over six runs suggests this ODH method as a promising route to access the biaryl compounds. In addition, the reaction mechanism is investigated with a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, functional group blocking, and model compounds of carbon catalysts and is proposed to be based on the redox cycle of the quinoidic groups on the carbon surface. Additional experiments prove that the addition of the catalytic amount of acid (methanesulfonic acid) accelerates the reaction. In addition, Hammett plot examination suggests the formation of a carbonium intermediate, and its possible structure is outlined.

RESUMO

In this paper, we discuss how tetrahydrodibenzo[a,j]acridine (4-HA) loses its hydrogen, which makes dibenzo[a,j]acridine (ARM) and also how 4-HA can be synthesized effectively using 2-tetralone in high yield. Dehydrogenative condensation and dehydrogenation are the two processes that make up the overall reaction of this synthetic approach. In addition, the presence of BF3 caused a remarkable fluorescence shift in ARM. Test paper analysis was used for examining the practical usefulness of ARM, which can be seen under UV light, resulting in this unique phenomenon. The fluorescent bio imaging experiment demonstrates that the sensor ARM has the capability to detect BF3 in living HeLa cells.

RESUMO

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) serves as a pivotal intentional technique to produce propylene. The stability of PDH catalysts is generally restricted by the readsorption of propylene which can subsequently undergo side reactions for coke formation. Herein, we demonstrate an ultrastable PDH catalyst by encapsulating PtIn clusters within silicalite-1 which serves as an efficient promoter for olefin desorption. The mean lifetime of PtIn@S-1 (S-1, silicalite-1) was calculated as 37317 h with high propylene selectivity of >97% at 580 °C with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 4.7 h-1. With an ultrahigh WHSV of 1128 h-1, which pushed the catalyst away from the equilibrium conversion to 13.3%, PtIn@S-1 substantially outperformed other reported PDH catalysts in terms of mean lifetime (32058 h), reaction rates (3.42 molpropylene gcat-1 h-1 and 341.90 molpropylene gPt-1 h-1), and total turnover number (14387.30 kgpropylene gcat-1). The developed catalyst is likely to lead the way to scalable PDH applications.

RESUMO

Electrochemical methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is regarded as a promising pathway to obtain value-added chemicals and drive cathodic H2 production, while the rational design of catalyst and in-depth understanding of the structure-activity relationship remains challenging. Herein, the ultrathin NiV-LDH (u-NiV-LDH) with abundant defects is successfully synthesized, and the defect-enriched structure is finely determined by X-ray adsorption fine structure etc. When applied for MOR, the as-prepared u-NiV-LDH presents a low potential of 1.41 V versus RHE at 100 mA cm-2, which is much lower than that of bulk NiV-LDH (1.75 V vs RHE) at the same current density. The yield of H2 and formate is 98.2% and 88.1% as its initial over five cycles and the ultrathin structure of u-NiV-LDH can be well maintained. Various operando experiments and theoretical calculations prove that the few-layer stacking structure makes u-NiV-LDH free from the interlayer hydrogen diffusion process and the hydrogen can be directly detached from LDH laminate. Moreover, the abundant surface defects upshift the d-band center of u-NiV-LDH and endow a higher local methanol concentration, resulting in an accelerated dehydrogenation kinetics on u-NiV-LDH. The synergy of the proton detachment from the laminate and the methanol dehydrogenation oxidation contributes to the excellent MOR performance of u-NiV-LDH.

RESUMO

The synergies of nanoconfinement and catalysis is an effective strategy to improve the kinetic and thermodynamic properties of Mg-based materials. However, obtaining Mg-based materials with high loading, anti-aggregation, and containing nanocatalysts to achieve dehydrogenation at room temperature remains a huge challenge. Herein, a novel and universal preparation strategy for Mg-Co@C nanocomposites with 9.5 nm Mg nanoparticles and 9.4 nm Co nanocatalysts embedded in carbon scaffold is reported. The 9.3 nm MgBu2 nanosheets precipitated by solvent displacement are encapsulated in ZIF-67 to prepare MgBu2@ZIF-67 precursors, then removing excess MgBu2 on the precursor surface and pyrolysis to obtain Mg-Co@C. It is worth noting that the Mg loading rate of Mg-Co@C is as high as rare 69.7%. Excitingly, the Mg-Co@C begins to dehydrogenate at room temperature with saturate capacity of 5.1 wt.%. Meanwhile, its dehydrogenation activation energy (Ea(des) = 68.8 kJ mol-1) and enthalpy (ΔH(des) = 61.6 kJ mol-1) significantly decrease compared to bulk Mg. First principles calculations indicate that the hydrogen adsorption energy on the Mg2CoH5 surface is only -0.681 eV. This work provides a universally applicable novel method for the preparation of nanoscale Mg-based materials with various nanocatalysts added, and provides new ideas for Mg-based materials to achieve room temperature hydrogen storage.

RESUMO

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of NiCo LDH electrocatalysts can be improved through fluorine doping. The roles of Ni and Co active sites in such catalysts remain ambiguous and controversial. In addressing the issue, this study draws upon the molecular orbital theory and proposes the active center competitive mechanism between Ni and Co. The doped F-atoms can directly impact the valence state of metal atoms or exert an indirect influence through the dehydrogenation, thereby modulating the active center. As the F-atoms are progressively aggregate, the eg orbitals of Ni and Co transition from e2 g to e1 g , and subsequently to e0 g . The corresponding valence state elevates from +2 to +3, and then to +4, signifying an initial increase followed by a subsequent decrease in the electrocatalytic performance. Furthermore, a series of F-NiCo LDH catalysts are synthesized to verify the eg orbital occupancy analysis, and the catalytic OER overpotentials are 303, 243, 240, and 246 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2 , respectively, which coincides well with the theoretical prediction. This investigation not only provides novel mechanistic insights into the transition and competition of Ni and Co in F-NiCo LDH catalysts but also establishes a foundation for the design of high-performance catalysts.

RESUMO

Borocarbonitride (BCN) catalysts, boasting multiple redox sites, have shown considerable potential in alkane oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) to olefin molecules. However, their catalytic efficiency still lags behind that of leading commercial catalysts, primarily due to the limited reactivity of oxygen functional groups. In this study, a groundbreaking hybrid catalyst is developed, featuring BCN nanotubes (BCNNTs) encapsulated with manganese (Mn) clusters, crafted through a meticulous supramolecular self-assembly and postcalcination strategy. This novel catalyst demonstrates a remarkable enhancement in activity, achieving 30% conversion and ≈100% selectivity toward styrene in ethylbenzene ODH reactions. Notably, its performance surpasses both pure BCNNTs and those hosting Mn nanoparticles. Structural and kinetic analyses unveil a robust interaction between BCNNTs and the Mn component, substantially boosting the catalytic activity of BCNNTs. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidate that BCNNTs encapsulated with Mn clusters not only stabilize key intermediates (─B─O─O─B─) but also enhance the nucleophilicity of active sites through electron transfer from the Mn cluster to the BCNNTs. This electron transfer mechanism effectively lowers the energy barrier for ─C─H cleavage, resulting in a 13% improvement in catalytic activity compared to pure BCNNTs.

RESUMO

Monocarbonyl rhodium complex LRh(CO), 1, which is stabilized by a pyrrole-based bis(phosphinimine) pincer ligand (L=κ3 -NNN'=2,5-[i Pr2 P=N(4-i PrC6 H4 )]2 -N'(C4 H2 )- ), serves as a versatile platform for the dehydrogenation of group 14 substrates. Reaction with primary and secondary silanes and germanes (MesSiH3 , Et2 SiH2 , Ph2 GeH2 , t BuGeH3 ; Mes=mesityl) liberates H2 and yields base-stabilized tetrylene compounds of the form κ2 -L(CO)Rh(ER2 ) (E=Si: R=Mes, H, 2; R=Et, 5; E=Ge: R=Ph, 6; R=t Bu, H, 8). The ":ER2 " fragment in these species bridges between the rhodium center and a phosphinimine donor. Preliminary reactions between pinacol (Pin) and κ2 -L(CO)Rh(ER2 ), E=Si, Ge, indicate that such complexes can serve as silylene and germylene synthons, releasing :ER2 and catalytically generating PinER2 . In contrast, combination of complex 1 and MesGeH3 does not yield the anticipated dehydrogenation product, but rather, transmetalation similar to that observed upon reaction between 1 and 3,5-dimethylphenylborane prevails.

RESUMO

Amine-borane dimers and oligomers with varied steric and electronic profiles were prepared via capping agent-controlled AA/BB polycondensations. They were used for transfer hydrogenations to aldehydes, ketones, imines as well as electron-poor alkene/alkyne moieties. The amine-borane Lewis-paired oligomers and the congested bis(amine-borane)s provided the highest yields. This was likely helped by facilitated dissociation (oligomers) or H-bond assistance. In the case of the oligomers, the second equivalent of H2 present was also engaged in the reaction. Solid-state NMR characterization provides evidence that the boron-containing materials obtained after transfer dehydrogenation are highly similar to those obtained from thermal dehydrogenation. The oligomers bridge the gap between simple amine-borane molecular reductants and the poly-amine-boranes and provide a full picture of the reactivity changes at the different scales.

RESUMO

The dehydrogenation of glycerol to lactic acid (LA) under both acceptorless and transfer dehydrogenation conditions using readily available, inexpensive, environmentally benign and earth-abundant base metal salt CoCl2 is reported here. The CoCl2 (0.5 mol %) catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenation of glycerol at 160 °C in the presence of 0.75 equiv. of KOH, gave up to 33 % yield of LA in 44 % selectivity apart from hydrogen. Alternatively, with acetone as a sacrificial hydrogen acceptor, the CoCl2 (0.5 mol %) catalyzed dehydrogenation of glycerol at 160 °C in the presence of 1.1 equiv. of NaOt Bu resulted in up to 93 % LA with 96 % selectivity along with another value-added product isopropanol. Labelling studies revealed a modest secondary KIE of 1.68 which points to the involvement of C-H bond activation as a part of the catalytic cycle but not as a part of the rate-determining step. Catalyst poisoning experiments with PPh3 and CS2 are indicative of the homogeneous nature of the reaction mixture involving molecular species that are likely to be in-situ formed octahedral Co(II) as inferred from EPR, HRMS and Evans magnetic moment studies. The net transfer dehydrogenation activity is attributed to exclusive contribution from the alcoholysis step.

RESUMO

Glycerol is one of the important biomass-derived feedstocks and the high-value utilizations of glycerol have attracted much attentions in recent years. Herein, we report a manganese catalyzed dehydrogenative coupling of glycerol with amines for the synthesis of substituted 2-methylquinoxalines, 2-ethylbenzimidazoles, and α-aminoketones without any external oxidant. In these reactions, NHC-based pincer manganese complex featuring a pyridine backbone displayed high catalytic activity and selectivity, in which hydrogen and water were produced as the only by-products using glycerol as a C3 synthon.

RESUMO

In the pursuit of enhancing the applications of hydrogen as an energy carrier, this research delved into the utilization of a singular hybrid catalyst capable of performing both dehydrogenation and hydrogenation processes for Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHCs). This study presents the synthesis and characterization of a hybrid catalyst, combining an organometallic pincer complex with Pd-Ru heterostructures supported on γ-alumina. Unlike conventional transition and noble metal nanoparticles, the use of a pincer complex offers exceptional thermal stability due to its aryl backbone, which is advantageous for various endothermic dehydrogenation reactions of hydrocarbons in LOHCs. This pioneering hybrid catalyst is a novel approach, demonstrating a proof of concept. In this study, we utilized the hybrid catalyst to investigate the dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of a lower enthalpic system, specifically the cyclooctane-cyclooctene system. The dehydrogenation of cyclooctane was conducted at 443 K using tertiary butyl ethylene as a sacrificial hydrogen acceptor, while the hydrogenation of cyclooctene reaction catalyzed by Pd-Ru nanostructures occurred at 298 K and 1 atm H2. The results showed successful tandem dehydrogenation-hydrogenation reactions. However, challenges were noted in terms of catalytic activity and recyclability, providing valuable insights for further refinement and optimization.

RESUMO

The catalytic dehydrogenation of light alkanes is key to transform low-cost hydrocarbons to high value-added chemicals. Although Pt is extremely efficient at catalyzing this reaction, it suffers from coke formation that deactivates the catalyst. Dopants such as Sn are widely used to increase the stability and lifetime of Pt. In this work, the dehydrogenation reaction of ethane catalyzed by Pt3 and Pt2X (X=Si, Ge, Sn, P and Al) nanocatalysts has been studied computationally by means of density functional calculations. Our results show how the presence of dopants in the nanocluster structure affects its electronic properties and catalytic activity. Exploration of the potential energy surfaces show that non-doped catalyst Pt3 present low selectivity towards ethylene formation, where acetylene resulting from double dehydrogenation reaction will be obtained as a side product (in agreement with the experimental evidence). On the contrary, the inclusion of Si, Ge, Sn, P or Al as dopant agents implies a selectivity enhancement, where acetylene formation is not energetically favoured. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of such dopant elements for the design of Pt-based catalysts on ethane dehydrogenation.

RESUMO

The dehydrogenation and dehydration of isopropanol on the SrO and TiO2 terminated surfaces, of the SrTiO3 perovskite, is addressed by periodic DFT calculations in order to shed light on the involved mechanisms. The results show that the dehydrogenation occurs through a mechanism involving the dissociative adsorption of the alcohol on the SrO terminated surface, followed the nucleophilic attack of a hydride species on the previously adsorbed hydrogen atom to form molecular hydrogen and the corresponding carbonyl compound. The dehydration instead occurs by the molecular adsorption of the alcohol on the TiO2 terminated surface, followed by various possible E1 elimination pathways leading to the formation of the corresponding alkene and a water molecule. The article reports a thorough study on the involved mechanisms, including identification of the transition states and intermediates along the reaction paths, and evaluation of the respective activation barriers, as well. Thus, this article provides significant insights about the mechanisms of dehydrogenation and dehydration of isopropanol on the SrTiO3 , not reported earlier in literature. The calculated barrier energies are in good agreement with experimental values.

RESUMO

Selective ethane dehydrogenation (EDH) is an attractive on-purpose strategy for industrial ethylene production. Design of an effective, stable, and earth-abundant catalyst to replace noble metal Pt is the main obstacle for its large-scale application. Herein, we report an experimentally validated theoretical framework to discover promising catalysts for EDH, which combines descriptor-based microkinetic modeling, high-throughput computations, machine-learning concepts, and experiments. Our approach efficiently evaluates 1,998 bimetallic alloys by using accurately calculated C and CH3 adsorption energies and identifies a small number of new promising noble-metal-free catalysts for selective EDH. A Ni3Mo alloy predicted to be promising is successfully synthesized, and experimentally proven to outperform Pt in selective ethylene production from EDH, representing an important contribution to the improvement of light alkane dehydrogenation to olefins. These results will provide essential additions in the discovery and application of earth-abundant materials in catalysis.

RESUMO

The oriental tobacco budworm Helicoverpa assulta (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a specialist pest that may cause serious damages to important crops such as chili pepper and tobacco. Various man-made insecticides have been applied to control the infestation of this pest. To understand how this pest copes with insecticides, it is required to identify key players involved in insecticide transformation. In this study, a P450 gene of CYP6B subfamily was identified in the oriental tobacco budworm, and its expression pattern was revealed. Moreover, the activities of HassCYP6B6 against 12 insecticides were explored using recombinant enzymes produced in the facile Escherichia coli. Data from metabolic experiments showed that HassCYP6B6 was able to metabolize conventional insecticides including organophosporates (diazinon, malathion, phoxim), carbamate propoxur, and pyrethroid esfenvalerate, while no significant metabolism was observed towards new-type pesticides such as neonicotinoids (acetamiprid, imidacloprid), diamides (chlorantraniliprole, cyantraniliprole), macrocyclic lactone (emamectin benzoate, ivermectin), and metaflumizone. Structures of metabolites were proposed based on mass spectrometry analyses. The results demonstrate that HassCYP6B6 plays important roles in the transformation of multiple insecticides via substrate-dependent catalytic mechanisms including dehydrogenation, hydroxylation and oxidative desulfurization. The findings have important applied implications for the usage of insecticides.

RESUMO

As a promising way to reduce the temperature for conventional thermolysis, plasmon-induced photocatalysis has been utilized for the dehydrogenation of methane. Here we probe the microscopic dynamic mechanism for plasmon-induced methane dissociation over a tetrahedral Ag20 nanoparticle with molecular orbital insights using time-dependent density functional theory. We ingeniously built the relationship between the chemical bonds and molecular orbitals via Hellmann-Feynman forces. The time- and energy-resolved photocarrier analysis shows that the indirect hot hole transfer from the Ag nanoparticle to methane dominates the photoreaction at low laser intensity, due to the strong hybridization of the Ag nanoparticle and CH4 orbitals, while indirect and direct charge transfer coexist to facilitate methane dissociation in intense laser fields. Our findings can be used to design novel methane photocatalysts and highlight the broad prospects of the molecular orbital approach for adsorbate-substrate systems.

RESUMO

The storage and transfer of energy require a safe technology to mitigate the global environmental issues resulting from the massive application of fossil fuels. Fuel cells have used hydrogen as a clean and efficient energy source. Nevertheless, the storage and transport of hydrogen have presented longstanding problems. Recently, liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) have emerged as a solution to these issues. The hydrogen storage technique in LOHCs is more attractive than those of conventional energy storage systems like liquefaction, compression at high pressure, and methods of adsorption and absorption. The release and acceptance of hydrogen should be reversible by LOHC molecules following favourable reaction kinetics. LOHCs comprise liquid and semi-liquid organic compounds that are hydrogenated to store hydrogen. These hydrogenated molecules are stored and transported and finally dehydrogenated to release the required hydrogen for supplying energy. Hydrogenation and dehydrogenation are conducted catalytically for multiple cycles. This review elaborates on the characteristics of different LOHC molecules, based on their efficacy as energy generators. Additionally, different catalysts used for both hydrogenation and dehydrogenation are discussed.

RESUMO

During the methanol-to-aromatics (MTA) process, a large amount of water is generated, while the influence and mechanism of water on the activity and selectivity of the light olefin aromatization reaction are still unclear. Therefore, a study was conducted to systematically investigate the effects of water on the reactivity and the product distribution in ethylene aromatization using infrared spectroscopy (IR), intelligent gravitation analyzer (IGA), and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) characterizations. The results demonstrated that the presence of water reduced ethylene conversion and aromatic selectivity while increasing hydrogen selectivity at the same contact time. This indicated that water had an effect on the reaction pathway by promoting the dehydrogenation reaction and suppressing the hydrogen transfer reaction. A detailed analysis using linear combination fitting (LCF) of Zn K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) on Zn/HZSM-5 catalysts showed significant variations in the state of existence and the distribution of Zn species on the deactivated catalysts, depending on different reaction atmospheres and water contents. The presence of water strongly hindered the conversion of ZnOH+ species, which served as the active centers for the dehydrogenation reaction, to ZnO on the catalyst. As a result, the dehydrogenation activity remained high in the presence of water. This study using IR and IGA techniques revealed that water on the Zn/HZSM-5 catalyst inhibited the adsorption of ethylene on the zeolite, resulting in a noticeable decrease in ethylene conversion and a decrease in aromatic selectivity. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the aromatization reaction process and provide data support for the design of efficient aromatization catalysts.

RESUMO

Compared to the currently widely used propane dehydrogenation process for propylene production, propane oxidative dehydrogenation (ODHP) offers the advantage of no thermodynamic limitations and lower energy consumption. However, a major challenge in ODHP is the occurrence of undesired over-oxidation reactions of propylene, which reduce selectivity and hinder industrialization. MOFs possess a large number of metal sites that can serve as catalytic centers, which facilitates the easier access of reactants to the catalytic centers for reaction. Additionally, their flexible framework structure allows for easier adjustment of their pores compared to metal oxides and molecular sieves, which is advantageous for the diffusion of products within the framework. This property reduces the likelihood of prolonged contact between the generated propylene and the catalytic centers, thus minimizing the possibility of over-oxidation. The research on MOF catalyzed oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) mainly focuses on the catalytic properties of MOFs with cobalt oxygen sites and boron oxygen sites. The advantages of cobalt oxygen site MOFs include significantly reduced energy consumption, enabling catalytic reactions at temperatures of 230 °C and below, while boron oxygen site MOFs exhibit high conversion rates and selectivity, albeit requiring higher temperatures. The explicit structure of MOFs facilitates the mechanistic study of these sites, enabling further optimization of catalysts. This paper provides an overview of the recent progress in utilizing MOFs as catalysts for ODHP and explores how they promote progress in ODHP catalysis. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of MOFs in the field of ODHP reactions are discussed.
