Estrone and estradiol differentially modulate neuroplasticity and cognition. How they influence the maturation of new neurons in the adult hippocampus, however, is not known. The present study assessed the effects of estrone and estradiol on the maturation timeline of neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus (DG) of ovariectomized (a model of surgical menopause) young adult Sprague-Dawley rats using daily subcutaneous injections of 17ß-estradiol, estrone or vehicle. Rats were injected with a DNA synthesis marker, 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU), and were perfused 1, 2, or 3 weeks after BrdU injection and daily hormone treatment. Brains were sectioned and processed for various markers including: sex-determining region Y-box 2 (Sox2), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), antigen kiel 67 (Ki67), doublecortin (DCX), and neuronal nuclei (NeuN). Immunofluorescent labeling or co-labelling of BrdU with Sox2 (progenitor cells), Sox2/GFAP (neural progenitor cells), Ki67 (cell proliferation), DCX (immature neurons), NeuN (mature neurons) was used to examine the trajectory and maturation of adult-born neurons over time. Estrogens had early (1 week of exposure) effects on different stages of neurogenesis (neural progenitor cells, cell proliferation and early maturation of new cells into neurons) but these effects were less pronounced after prolonged treatment. Estradiol enhanced, whereas estrone reduced cell proliferation after 1 week but not after longer exposure to either estrogen. Both estrogens increased the density of immature neurons (BrdU/DCX-ir) after 1 week of exposure compared to vehicle treatment but this increased density was not sustained over longer durations of treatments to estrogens, suggesting that the enhancing effects of estrogens on neurogenesis were short-lived. Longer duration post-ovariectomy, without treatments with either of the estrogens, was associated with reduced neural progenitor cells in the DG. These results demonstrate that estrogens modulate several aspects of adult hippocampal neurogenesis differently in the short term, but may lose their ability to influence neurogenesis after long-term exposure. These findings have potential implications for treatments involving estrogens after surgical menopause.

Persistent activation of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα)-mediated estrogen signaling plays a pivotal role in driving the progression of estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer (BC). In the current study, LINC00173, a long non-coding RNA, was found to bind both ERα and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) factor (LITAF), then cooperatively to inhibit ERα protein degradation by impeding the nuclear export of ERα. Concurrently, LITAF was found to attenuate TNFα transcription after binding to LINC00173, and this attenuating transcriptional effect was quite significant under lipopolysaccharide stimulation. Distinct functional disparities between estrogen subtypes emerge, with estradiol synergistically promoting ER+ BC cell growth with LINC00173, while estrone (E1) facilitated LITAF-transcriptional activation. In terms of therapeutic significance, silencing LINC00173 alongside moderate addition of E1 heightened TNFα and induced apoptosis, effectively inhibiting ER+ BC progression.

PURPOSE: Aromatase inhibitor (AI) therapy reduces risk of recurrence and death for postmenopausal women with breast cancer (BC); however, AI-induced arthralgia (AIIA) can lead to discontinuation of treatment. Curcumin, a bioactive polyphenolic substance, may help ameliorate inflammation-related conditions including osteoarthritis and pain. METHODS: We conducted a multisite randomized placebo-controlled, double-blind pilot trial (Alliance A22_Pilot9) to evaluate the effects of nanoemulsion curcumin (NEC, 200 mg/day) in postmenopausal women experiencing AIIA for ≥ 3 months. The primary objective was to determine the feasibility of using Functional Assessment of Cancer Treatment-Endocrine Symptoms (FACT-ES) to detect changes from 0 (T0) to 3 months (T3) of NEC treatment in AI-induced symptoms and well-being; secondary objectives included evaluation of changes in Disabilities of the Shoulder, Arm, and Hand (DASH), Brief Pain Inventory-short form (BPI-SF), grip strength, and biomarkers at T0 and T3. RESULTS: Forty-two patients were randomized to NEC or placebo; 34 women completed the 3-month study. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs: FACT-ES, DASH, BPI-SF) and biospecimens were collected at T0-T3 in > 80% of participants. Adherence was ≥ 90% for both arms. PROMs and grip strength did not differ significantly by treatment arm. Plasma curcumin was detected only in NEC arm participants. Serum estradiol and estrone levels were below detection or low on study agent. Gastrointestinal adverse effects were commonly reported in both arms. CONCLUSION: NEC versus placebo in a multisite randomized trial is feasible and well-tolerated. Additional studies with larger sample size are needed to further evaluate the efficacy and safety of NEC in treatment of AIIA. Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (PDAC), representing over 90 % of pancreatic cancer diagnoses, is an aggressive disease with survivability among the worst of all cancers due to its difficulty in detection and its high metastatic properties. Current therapies for PDAC show limited success at extending life expectancies, primarily due to cancer resistance and lack of patient-specific targeted therapies. This work highlights the design and evaluation of estrone-derived analogs with both heterocyclic side-chain functionality and 11-oxygenated functionality for use in pancreatic cancer. First-round heterocyclic analogs show preliminary promise in AsPC-1 and Panc-1 cell lines, with IC50 values as low as 10.16 ± 0.83 µM. Their success, coupled with design choices from other studies, led to the synthesis of novel 11-hydroxyl and 11-keto estrone analogs that show potent in-vitro toxicity against various pancreatic cancer models. The three most cytotoxic analogs, KA1, KA2, and KA9 demonstrated low micromolar activities in both MTT and CellTiter assays in three pancreatic cancer cell lines: AsPC-1, Panc-1, and BxPC-3, as well as in a co-culture of Panc-1 and pancreatic stellate cells. IC50 values for KA9 (4.17 ± 0.90, 5.28 ± 1.87, and 5.70 ± 0.65 µM respectively) shows consistency in all cell lines tested. KA9 is also able to cause an increase in caspases 3 and 7 activity, key markers for apoptosis, at non-cytotoxic concentrations. Additional work was performed by generating 3D pancreatic cancer spheroids to better modulate the pancreatic tumor microenvironment, and KA9 continued to show the best IC50 values (21.0 and 24.3 µM) in both cell types tested. KA9 was also able to prevent the growth of spheroids whereas the standard chemotherapy, Gemcitabine, could not, suggesting that it may be a potent analog for future development of treatments. Molecular dynamic simulations were also performed to confirm biological findings and uncovered that KA9's preferential binding location is in the active site pocket of key proteins involved in cytotoxicity.

This study explores the application of a tyrosinase cantilever nanobiosensor for detecting 17ß-estradiol and estrone in typical water systems. The physical-chemical parameters of water were evaluated within the Tigre River micro-basin in Erechim, RS, to determine water potability for urban populations. Water clarity, conductivity, and pH levels were essential markers, adhering to recognized standards for water quality and human consumption. The cantilever nanobiosensor demonstrated strong sensitivity and a broad linear range, with a limit of detection (<0.00051 ppb) surpassing other enzymatic biosensors and covering a range of 0.0001-100 ppb. The real water sample quality investigated in relation to contamination with 17ß-estradiol and estrone by nanobiosensor showed values below the LOD for both compounds. Recovery studies demonstrated the reliability of the nanobiosensor. Selectivity tests indicated minimal interference from structurally similar substances. This study validates the nanobiosensor's potential for environmental monitoring and hormone detection, aligning with standard practices.

We have synthesized a series of novel coumarin-steroid and triterpenoid hybrids and evaluated their potential anticancer activity through molecular docking calculations and in vitro antiproliferative assays. These hybrids, derived from estrone and oleanolic acid, were linked via hydrocarbon spacers of varying lengths. Molecular docking studies against human aromatase revealed strong interactions, particularly for compound 11d, which exhibited significant binding affinity (-12.6308 kcal/mol). In vitro assays demonstrated that compounds 6b and 11d had notable antiproliferative effects, with GI50 values of 5.4 and 7.0 µM against WiDr (colon) and HeLa (cervix) cancer cells, respectively. These findings highlight the potential of these hybrids as novel anticancer agents targeting aromatase, warranting further investigation and optimization.

INTRODUCTION: Although reproductive hormones are implicated in cerebral small vessel disease in women, few studies consider measured hormones in relation to white matter hyperintensity volume (WMHV), a key indicator of cerebral small vessel disease. Even fewer studies consider estrone (E1), the primary postmenopausal estrogen, or follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), an indicator of ovarian age. We tested associations of estradiol (E2), E1, and FSH to WMHV among women. METHODS: Two hundred twenty-two women (mean age = 59) underwent hormone assays (E1, E2, FSH) and 3T brain magnetic resonance imaging. Associations of hormones to WMHV were tested with linear regression. RESULTS: Higher E2 (B[standard error (SE)] = -0.17[0.06], P = 0.008) and E1 (B[SE] = -0.26[0.10], P = 0.007) were associated with lower whole-brain WMHV, and higher FSH (B[SE] = 0.26[0.07], P = 0.0005) with greater WMHV (covariates age, race, education). When additionally controlling for cardiovascular disease risk factors, associations of E1 and FSH to WMHV remained. DISCUSSION: Reproductive hormones, particularly E1 and FSH, are important to women's cerebrovascular health. HIGHLIGHTS: Despite widespread belief that sex hormones are important to women's brain health, little work has considered how these hormones in women relate to white matter hyperintensities (WMH), a major indicator of cerebral small vessel disease. We considered relations of estradiol (E2), estrone (E1), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) to WMH in midlife women. Higher E2 and E1 were associated with lower whole-brain WMH volume (WMHV), and higher FSH with higher whole-brain WMHV. Associations of E1 and FSH, but not E2, to WMHV persisted with adjustment for cardiovascular disease risk factors. Findings underscore the importance of E2 and FSH to women's cerebrovascular health.

Directed structural modifications of natural products offer excellent opportunities to develop selectively acting drug candidates. Natural product hybrids represent a particular compound group. The components of hybrids constructed from different molecular entities may result in synergic action with diminished side effects. Steroidal homo- or heterodimers deserve special attention owing to their potentially high anticancer effect. Inspired by our recently described antiproliferative core-modified estrone derivatives, here, we combined them into heterodimers via Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reactions. The two trans-16-azido-3-(O-benzyl)-17-hydroxy-13α-estrone derivatives were reacted with 3-O-propargyl-D-secoestrone alcohol or oxime. The antiproliferative activities of the four newly synthesized dimers were evaluated against a panel of human adherent gynecological cancer cell lines (cervical: Hela, SiHa, C33A; breast: MCF-7, T47D, MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-361; ovarian: A2780). One heterodimer (12) exerted substantial antiproliferative activity against all investigated cell lines in the submicromolar or low micromolar range. A pronounced proapoptotic effect was observed by fluorescent double staining and flow cytometry on three cervical cell lines. Additionally, cell cycle blockade in the G2/M phase was detected, which might be a consequence of the effect of the dimer on tubulin polymerization. Computational calculations on the taxoid binding site of tubulin revealed potential binding of both steroidal building blocks, mainly with hydrophobic interactions and water bridges.

CONTEXT: 17ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (17ß-HSD2) may be involved in the local modulation of estradiol (E2) availability in adipose tissues. OBJECTIVE: To assess the conversion of E2 into estrone (E1) as well as the expression of 17ß-HSD2 and its localization in omental (OM) and subcutaneous (SC) adipose tissues obtained from women. METHODS: Rates of 14 C-E1 formation from 14 C-E2 were measured in OM and SC adipose tissue homogenates from 29 women. Specific 17ß-HSD2 inhibitor EM-919 was tested in OM and SC adipose tissue homogenates (n = 6). 17ß-HSD2 mRNA expression was measured in whole OM and SC adipose tissues (n = 14). Cellular localization of the enzyme was examined using immunohistochemistry. Anthropometric measurements were obtained and body composition as well as body fat distribution were measured. RESULTS: Significant 14 C-E1 formation from 14 C-E2 in OM and SC tissue homogenates was detected. The rate of 14 C-E1 formation was significantly higher in OM than SC adipose tissue (p < .0001). The conversion of 14 C-E2 to 14 C-E1 was significantly inhibited by EM-919 in OM (p < .05) and SC (p < .05) adipose tissues. Significantly higher expression of 17ß-HSD2 mRNA in OM versus SC fat was found (p = .03). 17ß-HSD2 was localized in the vasculature of OM and SC tissues. Significant negative associations were detected between OM 17ß-HSD2 activity and body mass index, WC, lean body mass as well as SC adipose tissue areas. CONCLUSION: 17ß-HSD2 converts E2 to E1 in OM and SC adipose tissues of women. The activity of this enzyme decreases with increasing adiposity.

We quantified the occurrences and seasonal variations of the target endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) at four (two major municipals, and two academic institutions) WWTPs in Dehradun city, Uttarakhand, India. The results showed estrone in higher concentrations at µgL-1 levels in influent among the WWTPs, compared to triclosan (TCS) at ngL-1 levels. An astounding concentration of 123.95 µgL-1 was recorded for the estrone in the influent, which is to date the highest ever recorded, globally. Statistical data treatment was performed to test the distribution of the data (Shapiro-Wilk, Anderson-Darling, Lilliefors, and Jarque-Bera tests), and the significant difference between the mean of the wastewater sample population (ANOVA: F statistics, p values, Mann-Whitney test, Tukey's and Dunn's post hoc analysis). Statistical data treatment indicated EDCs concentration with a bi-modal distribution. The Shapiro-Wilk, Anderson-Darling, Lilliefors, and Jarque-Bera tests elucidate a non-normal distribution for the EDCs sample data. A statistically significant difference (F = 8.46; p < 0.0001) in the seasonal data for the abundance of the target EDCs at the WWTPs have been observed. Highest and significantly different mean EDCs concentrations were recorded during the monsoon, compared to the spring (p = 0.025) and summer (p = 0.0004) seasons in the influent waters. The mean influent concentrations of TCS and estrone in monsoon were 66.45 ngL-1 and 78.02 µgL-1, respectively. Maximum removals were recorded for TCS, while maximum negative removal of ∼293% was observed for estrone in the WWTPs. Particularly, the high levels of estrone in the wastewater pose a significant threat as estrone presence could be led to feminization, dysregulation of reproduction in organisms, and carcinogenesis processes in the environment. This study critically highlights the limitation of the WWTPs in the treatment, degradation, and assimilation of EDCs leading to their hyperaccumulation at WWTP effluents, thereby posing a substantial threat to nearby aquatic ecosystems, human health, and the ecological balance of the region.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether estrone and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) concentrations are associated with lipid concentrations in older postmenopausal women. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 6358 Australian women, aged 70-95 years, recruited between 2010 and 2014. Associations between estrone and SHBG and lipid concentrations were examined in participants not using medications that influence estrogen concentrations or lipid-lowering therapy. Linear regression models included age, body mass index, smoking, alcohol consumption, renal function and diabetes, with the lowest quartile (Q1) as the reference for estrone and SHBG. RESULTS: The study included 3231 participants with median age of 74.0 (interquartile range 71.7-77.9) years. Estrone concentration Q3 and Q4 were positively associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (p = 0.017 and p = 0.046, respectively). Inverse associations were seen for estrone Q4 with total cholesterol (p = 0.018), Q2 and Q4 with non-HDL-C (p = 0.045 and p = 0.002, respectively) and Q3 and Q4 with triglycerides (p = 0.030 and p = 0.001, respectively). For SHBG, Q2, Q3 and Q4 were positively associated with HDL-C (all p < 0.001), and inversely with non-HDL-C (all p = 0.001) and triglycerides (all p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Estrone and SHBG are associated with lipid concentrations in older women. SHBG, but not estrone, may provide additional clinical predictive utility for the assessment of cardiometabolic disease risk in older women.

Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are emerging contaminants that persist and contaminate the environment. They mimic hormones, block hormones, or modulate their synthesis, metabolism, transport, and action, affecting living organisms and their progeny. Steroid hormones from exogenous sources like water bodies are important EDCs. Their biodegradation is an urgent global need. The present study is a preliminary work to maximize the estrone degradation potential of Spirulina CPCC-695 and study the effect of optimized conditions on its laccase activity. It was observed that the exponential phase culture at pH 10.0, 30 ℃, and 200 rpm of agitation speed resulted in the maximum growth, estrone degradation efficiency (93.12%), and highest laccase activity (74%) of Spirulina CPCC-695.

Cervical carcinoma is one of the most frequent malignant gynecological cancers in women of reproductive age. Because of the poor tolerability of currently available chemotherapeutic agents, efforts have been focused on developing innovative molecules, including steroids, that exert antineoplastic effects with a better safety profile. In addition to their endocrine properties, certain estrogens exhibit additional biological activities, such as antiangiogenic and anticancer effects. Based on previous studies, the antineoplastic properties of 13α-estrone sulfamate derivatives (13AES1-3) were investigated, and the mechanism of action for the most promising compound 13AES3 was explored. Based on their effects on the viability of different human adherent gynecological cancer cells, the SiHa cervical cell line was used for mechanistic experiments. The most active analog 13AES3 was shown to exert considerable proapoptotic effects, as evidenced by a colorimetric caspase-3 assay and fluorescent double staining. It also elicited antimigratory and anti-invasive effects in a concentration-dependent manner, as evidenced by wound healing and Boyden chamber assays, respectively. Regarding their mechanism of action, 13AES derivatives were shown to inhibit tubulin polymerization, and computer simulations provided a possible explanation for the importance of the presence of the chlorophenyl ring on the estrane skeleton. 13AES3 is considered to be the first 13α-estrone derivative with a significant antineoplastic potency against SiHa cancer cells. Therefore, it might serve as a valuable lead molecule for the design of anticancer agents targeting cervical carcinomas.

Four diastereomers of 16-azidomethyl substituted 3-O-benzyl estradiol (1-4) and their two estrone analogs (16AABE and 16BABE) were tested for their antiproliferative properties against human gynecological cancer cell lines. The estrones were selected for additional experiments based on their outstanding cell growth-inhibiting activities. Both compounds increased hypodiploid populations of breast cancer cells, and 16AABE elicited cell cycle disturbance as evidenced by flow cytometry. The two analogs substantially increased the rate of tubulin polymerization in vitro. 16AABE and 16BABE inhibited breast cancer cells' migration and invasive ability, as evidenced by wound healing and Boyden chamber assays. Since both estrone analogs exerted remarkable estrogenic activities, as documented by a luciferase reporter gene assay, they can be considered as promising drug candidates for hormone-independent malignancies.

In general, the risk of being diagnosed with cancer increases with age; however, the development of estrogen-receptor-positive (ER+) cancer types in women are more closely related to menopausal status than age. In fact, the general risk factors for cancer development, such as obesity-induced inflammation, show differences in their association with ER+ cancer risk in pre- and postmenopausal women. Here, we tested the role of the principal estrogens in the bloodstream before and after menopause, estradiol (E2) and estrone (E1), respectively, on inflammation, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cancer stem cell enrichment in the human ER+ cervical cancer cell line HeLa. Our results demonstrate that E1, contrary to E2, is pro-inflammatory, increases embryonic stem-transcription factors (ES-TFs) expression and induces EMT in ER+ HeLa cells. Moreover, we observed that high intratumoural expression levels of 17ß-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD17B) isoforms involved in E1 synthesis is a poor prognosis factor, while overexpression of E2-synthetizing HSD17B isoforms is associated with a better outcome, for patients diagnosed with ER+ ovarian and uterine corpus carcinomas. This work demonstrates that E1 and E2 have different biological functions in ER+ gynaecologic cancers. These results open a new line of research in the study of ER+ cancer subtypes, highlighting the potential key oncogenic role of E1 and HSD17B E1-synthesizing enzymes in the development and progression of these diseases.

With the development of livestock industry, contaminants such as divalent zinc ions (Zn (Ⅱ)) and estrone are often simultaneously detected in livestock wastewater. Nevertheless, the combined toxicity of these two pollutants on microalgae is still unclear. Moreover, microalgae have the potential for biosorption and bioaccumulation of heavy metals and organic compounds. Thus, this study investigated the joint effects of Zn (Ⅱ) and estrone on microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana, in terms of growth, photosynthetic activity and biomolecules, as well as pollutants removal by algae. Interestingly, a low Zn (Ⅱ) concentration promoted C. sorokiniana growth and photosynthetic activity, while the high concentration experienced inhibition. As the increase of estrone concentration, chlorophyll a content increased continuously to resist the environmental stress. Concurrently, the secretion of extracellular polysaccharides and proteins by algae increased with exposure to Zn (Ⅱ) and estrone, reducing toxicity of pollutants to microalgae. Reactive oxygen species and superoxide dismutase activity increased as the increase of pollutant concentration after 96 h cultivation, but high pollutant concentrations resulted in damage of cells, as proved by increased MDA content. Additionally, C. sorokiniana displayed remarkable removal efficiency for Zn (Ⅱ) and estrone, reaching up to 86.14% and 84.96% respectively. The study provides insights into the biochemical responses of microalgae to pollutants and highlights the potential of microalgae in pollutants removal.

Cancers utilize sugar residues such as sialic acids (Sia) to improve their ability to survive. Sia presents a variety of functional group alterations, including O-acetylation on the C6 hydroxylated tail. Previously, sialylation has been reported to suppress EGFR activation and increase cancer cell sensitivity to Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors (TKIs). In this study, we report on the effect of deacetylated Sia on the activity of three novel EGFR-targeting Cucurbitacin-inspired estrone analogs (CIEAs), MMA 294, MMA 321, and MMA 320, in lung and colon cancer cells. Acetylation was modulated by the removal of Sialate O-Acetyltransferase, also known as CAS1 Domain-containing protein (CASD1) gene via CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing. Using a variety of cell-based approaches including MTT cell viability assay, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence assay and in-cell ELISA we observed that deacetylated Sia-expressing knockout cells (1.24-6.49 µM) were highly sensitive to all CIEAs compared with the control cells (8.82-20.97 µM). Apoptosis and varied stage cell cycle arrest (G0/G1 and G2/M) were elucidated as mechanistic modes of action of the CIEAs. Further studies implicated overexpression of CIEAs' cognate protein target, phosphorylated EGFR, in the chemosensitivity of the deacetylated Sia-expressing knockout cells. This observation correlated with significantly decreased levels of key downstream proteins (phosphorylated ERK and mTOR) of the EGFR pathway in knockout cells compared with controls when treated with CIEAs. Collectively, our findings indicate that Sia deacetylation renders lung and colon cancer cells susceptible to EGFR therapeutics and provide insights for future therapeutic interventions.

A new series of nitric oxide-releasing estra-1,3,5,16-tetraene analogs (NO-∆-16-CIEAs) was designed and synthesized as dual inhibitors for EGFR and MRP2 based on our previous findings on estra-1,3,5-triene analog NO-CIEA 17 against both HepG2 and HepG2-R cell lines. Among the target compounds, 14a (R-isomer) and 14b (S-isomer) displayed potent anti-proliferative activity against both HepG2 and HepG2-R cell lines in comparison to the reference drug erlotinib. Remarkably, compound 14a resulted in a prominent reduction in EGFR phosphorylation at a concentration of 1.20 µM with slight activity on the phosphorylation of MEK1/2 and ERK1/2. It also inhibits MRP2 expression in a dose-dependent manner with 24% inhibition and arrested the cells in the S phase of the cell cycle. Interestingly, compound 14a (estratetraene core) exhibited a twofold increase in anti-proliferative activity against both HepG2 and HepG2-R in comparison with the lead estratriene analog, demonstrating the significance of the designed ∆-16 unsaturation. The results shed a light on compound 14a and support further investigations to combat multidrug resistance in chemotherapy of hepatocellular carcinoma patients.

Novel 13α-estrone derivatives have been synthesized via direct arylation of the phenolic hydroxy function. Chan-Lam couplings of arylboronic acids with 13α-estrone as a nucleophilic partner were carried out under copper catalysis. The antiproliferative activities of the newly synthesized diaryl ethers against a panel of human cancer cell lines (A2780, MCF-7, MDA-MB 231, HeLa, SiHa) were investigated by means of MTT assays. The quinoline derivative displayed substantial antiproliferative activity against MCF-7 and HeLa cell lines with low micromolar IC50 values. Disturbance of tubulin polymerization has been confirmed by microplate-based photometric assay. Computational calculations reveal significant interactions of the quinoline derivative with the taxoid binding site of tubulin.

In this study, we examined the sorption of selected "chemicals of emerging concern" (CEC) on humic substances commonly found in water and municipal wastewater. These were ibuprofen, diclofenac, caffeine, carbamazepine, estrone, triclosan, bisphenol A, and isoproturon. The humic substances (HSs) were synthetic and not contaminated by the tested organic substances. The elemental composition and content of mineral micropollutants, gravimetric curves, and the IR spectrum of HSs were determined. We determined a relationship between the process efficiency and the characteristics of a sorbent and sorbate using the properties of organic substances sorbed on HSs. This relationship was confirmed by sorption tests on the HS complex, i.e., the HS-organic micropollutant. It has been shown that the given complexes have a greater affinity for hydrophobic surfaces than hydrophilic surfaces. To confirm the nature of the sorbent surfaces, we determined their zeta potential dependence on the pH of the solution. Studies have shown that HSs are carriers of both mineral substances and CEC in water and sewage environments.
