RESUMO
The aesthetic preferences of potential mates have driven the evolution of a baffling diversity of elaborate ornaments. Which fitness benefit-if any-choosers gain from expressing such preferences is controversial, however. Here, we simulate the evolution of preferences for multiple ornament types (e.g., "Fisherian," "handicap," and "indicator" ornaments) that differ in their associations with genes for attractiveness and other components of fitness. We model the costs of preference expression in a biologically plausible way, which decouples costly mate search from cost-free preferences. Ornaments of all types evolved in our model, but their occurrence was far from random. Females typically preferred ornaments that carried information about a male's quality, defined here as his ability to acquire and metabolize resources. Highly salient ornaments, which key into preexisting perceptual biases, were also more likely to evolve. When males expressed quality-dependent ornaments, females invested readily in costly mate search to locate preferred males. In contrast, the genetic benefits associated with purely arbitrary ornaments were insufficient to sustain highly costly mate search. Arbitrary ornaments could nonetheless "piggyback" on mate-search effort favored by other, quality-dependent ornaments. We further show that the potential to produce attractive male offspring ("sexy sons") can be as important as producing offspring of high general quality ("good genes") in shaping female preferences, even when preferred ornaments are quality dependent. Our model highlights the importance of mate-search effort as a driver of aesthetic coevolution.

INTRODUCTION: As Hearing loss and dementia affect people with the same profile, several epidemiological studies have evaluated their relationship. However, the link between age-related hearing loss and Alzheimer's disease is still unclear. METHODS: We selected subjects with no history of exposure to loud noises, blasts, head trauma with hearing loss, or sudden sensorineural hearing loss from a cohort intended to study preclinical phases of Alzheimer's disease. Participants are volunteers over 55 years without cognitive impairment. We correlated the results of an objective auditory evaluation with brain amyloid and p-tau181 levels and with the outcomes of a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment. RESULTS: Fifty-five subjects at different stages of the Alzheimer's disease continuum were evaluated. There were no statistically significant correlations between amyloid-ß and p-tau levels and any of the objective auditory measures. A weak but significant correlation was found between amyloid-ß values and the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly. The neuropsychological domains more correlated to hearing loss were executive function and processing speed. DISCUSSION: Age-related hearing loss is not linked to any pathological markers of Alzheimer's disease nor to neuropsychological domains typically affected in this disease. The Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly has an important component of subjectivity and further studies are needed to explore its relationship with amyloid-ß levels.

In many vertebrates, the enzymatic oxidation of dietary yellow carotenoids generates red keto-carotenoids giving color to ornaments. The oxidase CYP2J19 is here a key effector. Its purported intracellular location suggests a shared biochemical pathway between trait expression and cell functioning. This might guarantee the reliability of red colorations as individual quality signals independent of production costs. We hypothesize that the ornament type (feathers vs. bare parts) and production costs (probably CYP2J19 activity compromising vital functions) could have promoted tissue-specific gene relocation. We review current avian tissue-specific CYP2J19 expression data. Among the ten red-billed species showing CYP2J19 bill expression, only one showed strong hepatic expression. Moreover, a phylogenetically-controlled analysis of 25 red-colored species shows that those producing red bare parts are less likely to have strong hepatic CYP2J19 expression than species with only red plumages. Thus, both production costs and shared pathways might have contributed to the evolution of red signals.

BACKGROUND: Binaural beat stimulation (BBS) involve presenting two sinusoidal waves with specific frequency differences to induce neural changes in the brain, often used for mental state induction and symptom reduction. However, there are limited studies on its effectiveness for tinnitus. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of combining binaural beats with music containing nature sounds for chronic tinnitus. METHODS: A total of 30 men, aged 45.87 on average (SD = 8.09), who had chronic tinnitus and symmetrical mild to moderate hearing loss, were included in this study. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups: MT group (Music therapy; n = 15), which received relaxing music containing the sound of sea waves, and MT + BBS group (Music therapy plus binaural beats; n = 15), which received the same music combined with alpha frequency (8 Hz) binaural beats. The therapy sessions were conducted twice a day for 15 min, over a period of 4 weeks. Outcome measures, including the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the pitch and loudness of tinnitus were administered before, immediately after, and during the three-month follow-up period. RESULTS: The findings revealed improvements in loudness and annoyance VAS, as well as THI total and all subscale scores in both groups (p < 0.001). Additionally, TFI total score showed improvement in both groups (MT: p = 0.001; MT + BBS: p < 0.001) except for the sense of control subscale in both groups and the cognitive subscale in the MT group after the treatment and during the three-month follow-up period. Furthermore, both groups exhibited a decrease in scores for both subscales of HADS. However, there were no significant differences between the two groups in any of the measurement outcomes (p > 0.05), except for the emotional subscale scores of TFI (p = 0.049) and the functional subscale scores of THI (p = 0.034). In other words, during the follow-up period, the MT + BBS group exhibited lower scores in these two subscales compared to the MT group. CONCLUSION: Although our study failed to demonstrate the superiority of combining binaural beats with music, both groups experienced significant improvements. This suggest that there are potential benefits to be gained from these types of stimuli. Given the sustained effect of both methods and the even greater improvements in follow-up observed in the binaural beats group for some scales, it seems that the changes in neural response and brain waves caused by our stimulations are persistent. This necessitates further research involving brain mapping, especially with longer follow-up durations.

OBJECTIVE: Dysphagia is multifactorial in unilateral vocal fold immobility (UVFI). Severe dysphagia could indicate greater functional deficits in UVFI. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association of dysphagia with the need for surgical voice restoration in patients with UVFI. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. SETTING: Single-institution, tertiary referral center. METHODS: Records of UVFI patients from 2008 to 2018 were examined. Dysphagia severity was extracted from patient history. Etiology of UVFI and other relevant variables were analyzed to determine their association with dysphagia. Dysphagia severity and other clinical variables were then analyzed for their association with surgical voice restoration. RESULTS: Eighty patients met selection criteria out of 478 patients with UVFI. There was significant concordance between dysphagia severity extracted from patient history and patient-reported EAT-10 scores (R = 0.59, p = 0.000035). Patients' EAT-10 scores were correlated with VHI-10 scores (R = 0.45, p = 0.011). Severe dysphagia (p = 0.037), high VHI-10 score on presentation (p = 0.0009), and longer duration of hoarseness before presentation (p = 0.008) were associated with surgical voice restoration in UVFI patients. CONCLUSION: In this pilot study, severe dysphagia and increased voice handicap on presentation were associated with the need for surgical voice restoration in UVFI patients. Presenting dysphagia may be an additional variable for clinicians to consider for management of UVFI.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in benign vocal fold lesions. METHODS: MEDLINE, Cochrane Central, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched in April 2023 for relevant clinical trials. Inclusion criteria were clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of PRP in benign vocal fold lesions. We conducted a comparative double-arm analysis using the pooled mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Outcomes of interest included the vocal handicap index (VHI), the Jitter and Shimmer percentages, and the noise-to-harmonic ratio (NHR). RESULTS: Six studies matched the inclusion criteria. The pooled analysis shows that PRP was associated with significantly lower VHI scores compared with the control (MD = - 5.06, p < 0.01). Regarding the Jitter percentage, the PRP group was not superior to the control group at 2 and 4 weeks. However, the results revealed that PRP significantly reduced the Jitter percentage at 3 months (MD = - 0.61, p = 0.0008). The overall analysis favored the PRP arm significantly (p < 0.001). As for the Shimmer percentage, the combined effect estimate favored the PRP group (MD = - 1.22, p = 0.002). Subgroup analysis according to the time did not reveal any significant differences between studies at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 3 months. The analysis of the NHR outcome revealed a significant difference between both groups (MD = -1.09, p = 0.01). However, at 4 weeks, the treatment group had a significantly lower NHR % compared to the control group (MD = - 0.61, p = 0.02). There was no significant difference at 3 months (MD = - 2.14, p = 0.14). CONCLUSIONS: Platelet-rich plasma is effective in reducing VHI scores, Jitter and Shimmer percentages, and NHR values. This effect is more evident after follow-up, especially 3 months.

BACKGROUND: Signal reliability poses a central problem for explaining the evolution of communication. According to Zahavi's Handicap Principle, signals are honest only if they are costly at the evolutionary equilibrium; otherwise, deception becomes common and communication breaks down. Theoretical signalling games have proved to be useful for understanding the logic of signalling interactions. Theoretical evaluations of the Handicap Principle are difficult, however, because finding the equilibrium cost function in such signalling games is notoriously complicated. Here, we provide a general solution to this problem and show how cost functions can be calculated for any arbitrary, pairwise asymmetric signalling game at the evolutionary equilibrium. RESULTS: Our model clarifies the relationship between signalling costs at equilibrium and the conditions for reliable signalling. It shows that these two terms are independent in both additive and multiplicative models, and that the cost of signalling at honest equilibrium has no effect on the stability of communication. Moreover, it demonstrates that honest signals at the equilibrium can have any cost value, even negative, being beneficial for the signaller independently of the receiver's response at equilibrium and without requiring further constraints. Our results are general and we show how they apply to seminal signalling models, including Grafen's model of sexual selection and Godfray's model of parent-offspring communication. CONCLUSIONS: Our results refute the claim that signals must be costly at the evolutionary equilibrium to be reliable, as predicted by the Handicap Principle and so-called 'costly signalling' theory. Thus, our results raise serious concerns about the handicap paradigm. We argue that the evolution of reliable signalling is better understood within a Darwinian life-history framework, and that the conditions for honest signalling are more clearly stated and understood by evaluating their trade-offs rather than their costs per se. We discuss potential shortcomings of equilibrium models and we provide testable predictions to help advance the field and establish a better explanation for honest signals. Last but not least, our results highlight why signals are expected to be efficient rather than wasteful.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored whether select patient attributes were significant predictors of readiness to pursue hearing aids (HAs) and estimated the impacts of hearing aid self-efficacy (HASE) and emotional states, on the relationship between perceived hearing handicap and readiness to pursue HAs. DESIGN & STUDY SAMPLE: Sixty-two adults with self-reported hearing difficulties and no previous experience with HAs self-reported their hearing handicap, HASE, personality, emotional states in varying contexts, and readiness to pursue HAs. RESULTS: Individuals with greater hearing handicap and who had experienced hearing loss for a shorter duration were more ready to pursue HAs. Having higher HASE, more positive emotional states in "Social" situations, higher scores for the Agreeableness, and having lower Conscientiousness personality trait scores also independently predicted readiness. Neither HASE nor reported emotional states had a significant impact on the relationship between perceived hearing handicap and readiness to pursue HAs. CONCLUSIONS: Certain patient characteristics independently motivate people towards or away from pursuing HAs. However, it remains unclear whether targeted modification of these attributes would directly facilitate behaviour change. Future research should further explore these questions to facilitate a more individualised audiologic rehabilitation.
RESUMO
INTRODUCTION: This study explores the quality of life among patients with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) after vocal fold surgery as measured by the outcome scores of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) and the Distress Thermometer and Problem List in Patients with Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (DT&PL). Differences in quality of life were explored within the independent variables age, surgical frequency, weeks since last vocal fold operation, gender, HPV type, surgical location, vaccination with Gardasil©, and a patient's request to speak with a speech-language pathologist. METHODS: A single-center, observational cohort study was conducted using VHI and DT&PL scores and demographic and clinical data obtained from patient files. Inclusion criteria were a confirmed HPV type, age 18 years or older, the ability to fill in both questionnaires in Dutch, and having undergone at least one surgical procedure to remove laryngeal papilloma. Relationships of the independent variables with VHI and Distress Thermometer (DT) scores were explored using univariable and multivariable regressions and linear regression models. RESULTS: Of 271 RRP patients, 100 met the inclusion criteria and responded to requests to fill in both questionnaires with a minimum of 12 weeks after their last operation. Our study showed a statistically significant negative relationship between age and VHI scores (p = 0.02) in the univariable, and multiple linear regressions (p = 0.01), indicating that patients experienced fewer self-perceived functional voice disabilities with each increase in age. A parallel negative relationship is seen between the variables age (p = 0.03) and DT scores. Our results showed a statistically significant positive relationship between the number of vocal fold surgeries and DT scores (p = 0.03). CONCLUSION: The results of this study show a significant relationship between age, surgical frequency, and quality of life in patients with RRP. Older patients have lower Voice Handicap Index (VHI) and Distress Thermometer (DT) scores, indicating fewer self-perceived voice and disease-related quality of life problems. Conversely, a rise in surgical frequency is significantly associated with higher DT scores, reflecting greater disease-related distress.

Objective: To compare voice related quality of life of smoker and non-smoker university teachers. Method: This Cross-Sectional descriptive study was conducted at Riphah International University over a period of six months January to June, 2022. A sample of N=352 University teachers of both genders, aged 25 to 65 years, who were faculty members and working at least 8 hours per day in teaching positions with at least one-year experience were included in the study. Demographic sheet, Voice Related Quality of Life (VRQOL) and Voice Handicap Index (VHI) were used for data collection and analysis conducted on SPSS Version 21. Mean scores of VRQOL and VHI for smokers and non-smokers were compared using Mann Whitney U Test. & Spearman's correlation was utilized to determine any association between the tool scores. P<0.01 was considered significant. Results: Results reveal that the mean score of Voice related quality of life scale was significantly (p=0.000) higher in smokers compared to non-smokers indicating worse voice quality in smokers. Similarly, voice handicap index scores were much higher in smokers (p=0.000) indicating more handicap in the smokers. Conclusion: The study concludes that smoking has a detrimental effect on voice and voice related quality of life of university teachers and voice related quality of life as determined by VRQOL scale is significantly better in non-smokers.
RESUMO
This study examines the effectiveness of a voice training program designed for Islamic religious officials, who are occupational voice users with a significant vocal load. The participants included 34 healthy religious officials whose acoustic measures were within normal voice ranges for healthy adults (jitter < 1%; shimmer < 3%) and reported no voice complaints. Participants were randomly divided into two groups (experimental, n = 17; control, n = 17). The two-stage voice training program consisted of 32 sessions over 8 weeks with informative and voice exercise stages. Objective and subjective voice measurements were performed at the beginning and end of the research. Objective measurements included fundamental frequency, percentage of vocal pitch perturbation (jitter), percentage of vocal intensity perturbation (shimmer), and harmonics-to-noise ratio. Subjective voice measurements included the Singing Voice Handicap Index, Vocal Fatigue Index (VFI), and Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQoL) scores. All initial measurements other than VFI scores were within acceptable limits for both groups. There were no significant differences between the groups initially (p > 0.05) and no significant changes in the control group in the second evaluation (p > 0.05). However, there was significant improvement in the experimental group after the training program in all measures, including VFI scores (p < 0.05). This study shows the positive results of a voice training program. Voice training should be integrated into the formal education of occupational voice users or in-service training programs of relevant institutions.
RESUMO
People with disabilities are more often victims of sexual violence, especially women. Dependence due to disability encourages domination and control. Studies put forward significant figures, reflecting a growing awareness of the various forms of violence and a liberation of speech, though still insufficient. Professionals and associations, backed by the law, are trying to identify and support victims.

When caring for a patient with an intellectual disability, restraint is often an ambush. At the Institut Jérôme Lejeune, the nursing team has put in place a series of measures designed to help both patient and caregiver, whether in managing the pain induced by care or the apprehension it provokes. After a year's implementation, the number of heavy restraints has fallen significantly.

The term quality of life at work (QWL) first appeared in the 2000s, and in particular since December 2020, when working conditions were taken into account. QWL then became Quality of Life and Working Conditions (QWLWC). It therefore became an essential subject to promote, in which the occupational health nurse plays a crucial role. By working closely with employees, occupational health nurses play an active role in preventing occupational risks and promoting health and well-being.

In neonatology and pediatric intensive care units, as in pediatric units, development support care practiced according to the approach of psychologist André Bullinger takes into account sensorimotor and psychological aspects. Considering the quality and quantity of movements, from the antenatal period, allows for individualized and early care. Sensitive periods of sensorimotor development, during which brain plasticity is optimal, are decisive for psychomotor and cognitive development. Observation and evaluation of movements, as well as postural support to enable active motor skills, constitute essential elements of the developmental support provided to vulnerable children of all ages.

In variable environments, habitats that are rich in resources often carry a higher risk of predation. As a result, natural selection should favour individuals that balance allocation of time to foraging versus avoiding predation through an optimal decision-making process that maximizes fitness. The behavioural trade-off between resource acquisition and risk avoidance is expected to be particularly acute during gestation and lactation, when the energetic demands of reproduction peak. Here, we investigated how reproductive female roe deer adjust their foraging activity and habitat use during the birth period to manage this trade-off compared with non-reproductive juveniles, and how parturition date constrains individual tactics of risk-resource management. Activity of reproductive females more than doubled immediately following parturition, when energy demand is highest. Furthermore, compared with non-reproductive juveniles, they increased their exposure to risk by using open habitat more during daytime and ranging closer to roads. However, these post-partum modifications in behaviour were particularly pronounced in late-parturient females who adopted a more risk-prone tactic, presumably to compensate for the growth handicap of their late-born offspring. In income breeders, individuals that give birth late may be constrained to trade risk avoidance for foraging during peak allocation to reproduction, with probable consequences for individual fitness.

BACKGROUND: Firefighters are routinely exposed to loud noise that put them at risk for hearing loss. A reliable and valid measure to assess firefighters' hearing function is important. This study aims to test the reliability and validity of the modified Amsterdam Inventory for Auditory Disability and Handicap ((m)AIADH) in firefighters. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a convenience sample of 239 career firefighters from six partnered fire departments in Central Texas and Northern California. The internal consistency, convergent and criterion validity, and the ability to discriminate groups by measured hearing, perceived hearing, and a combination of measured and perceived hearing, were examined using the total score and score for each of the five subscales of the (m)AIADH. RESULTS: The study participants were primarily men (93%). Satisfactory internal consistency was revealed for the (m)AIADH with Cronbach's alpha above 0.80 for all five subscales. Criterion analysis presented a moderate correlation between the (m)AIADH and the average of hearing threshold at high frequencies (4, 6, and 8 kHz). For convergent validity, the (m)AIADH was moderately to highly related with perceived hearing. There were statistically significant differences in the total (m)AIADH score and the five subscales for measured hearing thresholds except for "intelligibility in quiet." The (m)AIADH also showed a discriminative ability to distinguish between the group with good perceived hearing and the group with bad perceived hearing. CONCLUSION: The (m)AIADH is a reliable and valid measure to assess various dimensions of hearing function among firefighters.

Dysphagia Handicap Index (DHI) is a self-assessment questionnaire which consists of 25 statements to examine three aspects of dysphagia patients' quality of life (QoL): functional, physical, and emotional. The patient can get a maximum score of 100 points. The study goal was to validate and translate the Polish version of the DHI (PL-DHI). One hundred and seventy-eight (178) individuals with oropharyngeal dysphagia with different etiology and 35 (thirty-five) asymptomatic adults with no history of swallowing disorders filled out the PL-DHI. Internal consistency was determined using Cronbach alpha coefficient, which was high for the total PL-DHI score (0.962). The reproducibility was high (r-Spearman correlation coefficient was 0.97 for total PL-DHI score). The PL-DHI's total score and its subscales were significantly higher in the dysphagia patients study group (SG) than in the healthy controls group (CG) (SG median: 36; CG median: 4). A strong correlation was observed between the PL-DHI score and the self-reported dysphagia severity measure (Spearman's correlation coefficient was 0.859, p < 0.001). The Polish DHI is a reliable and valid questionnaire for assessing dysphagia patients' QoL.
