RESUMO

To simulate a topological neural network handling weak signals via stochastic resonance (SR), it is necessary to introduce an inherent nonlinearity into nanoscale devices. We use the self-assembly method to successfully fabricate a phase-change quantum-dot string (PCQDS) crossing Pd/Nb:AlNO/AlNO/Nb:AlNO/Pd multilayer. The inherent nonlinearity of phase change couples with electron tunneling so that PCQDS responds to a long signal sequence in a modulated output style, in which the pulse pattern evolves to that enveloped by two sets of periodic wave characterized by neural action potential. We establish an SR mode consisting of several two-state systems in which dissipative tunneling is coupled to environment. Size oscillations owing to NbO QDs adaptively adjust barriers and wells, such that tunneling can be periodically modulated by either asymmetric energy or local temperature. When the external periodic signals are applied, the system first follows the forcing frequency. Subsequently, certain PCQDs oscillate independently and consecutively to produce complicated frequency and amplitude modulations.

The relationship between human genetic variation and disease has not been fully elucidated. According to the present view on infectious diseases pathogen resistance is linked to human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I/II variants and their individual capacity to present pathogen-derived peptides. Yet, T cell education in the thymus occurs through negative and positive selection, and both processes are controlled by a combination of HLA class I/II variants and peptides from the self. Therefore, the capacity of given HLA class I/II variants to bind pathogen-derived peptides is only one part of the selective process to generate effective immune responses. We thus propose that peptidome variation contributes to shaping T cell receptor (TCR) repertoires and hence individual immune responses, and that this variation represents inherent modulator epitopes.

1D compound semiconductor nanomaterials possess unique physicochemical properties that strongly depend on their size, composition, and structures. ZnS has been widely investigated as one of the most important semiconductors, and the control of crystallographic orientation of 1D ZnS nanostructures is still challenging and crucial to exploring their anisotropic properties. Herein, a solution-processed strategy is developed to synthesize 1D wurtzite (w-)ZnS nanostructures with the specific <002> and <210> orientations by co-decomposing the copper dibutyldithiocarbamate {[(C4 H9 )2 NCS2 ]2 Cu, i.e., R2 Cu} and zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate (R2 Zn) precursors in the mixed solvents of oleylamine and 1-dodecanethoil. A solution-solid-solid (SSS)-Oriented growth mechanism is proposed, which includes oriented nucleation dominated and SSS growth dominated stages. The crystallographic orientation mainly depends on the interfacial energy and ligand effect. The 1D w-ZnS nanostructures with controlled crystallographic orientation display unique morphologies, i.e., <002>-oriented w-ZnS nanorod enclosed with {110} facets while <210>-oriented w-ZnS nanobelt enclosed with wide (002) and narrow (110) facets. The bandgap of 1D w-ZnS nanostructures can be tuned from 3.94 to 3.82 eV with the crystallographic growth direction varied from <002> to <210>, thus leading to the tunable band-edge emission from ≈338 to ≈345 nm.

Naturally occurring iron (Fe) minerals have been proved to activate persulfate (PS) to generate reactive species, but the role of soil-inherent Fe minerals in activating PS as well as the underlying mechanisms remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation by PS in two Fe-rich soils and one Fe-poor soil. Unlike with the radical-dominant oxidation processes in Fe-poor soil, PS was effectively activated through nonradical pathways (i.e., surface electron-transfer) in Fe-rich soils, accounting for 68.4%-85.5% of SMX degradation. The nonradical mechanism was evidenced by multiple methods, including electrochemical, in situ Raman, and competition kinetics tests. Inherent Fe-based minerals, especially those containing Fe(II) were the crucial activators of PS in Fe-rich soils. Compared to Fe(III) minerals, Fe(II) minerals (e.g., ilmenite) were more liable to form Fe(II) mineral-PS* complexes to initiate the nonradical pathways, oxidizing adjacent SMX via electron transfer. Furthermore, mineral structural Fe(II) was the dominant component to coordinate such a direct oxidation process. After PS oxidation, low-crystalline Fe minerals in soils were transformed into high-crystalline Fe phases. Collectively, our study shows that soil-inherent Fe minerals can effectively activate PS in Fe-rich soils, so the addition of exogenous iron might not be required for PS-based in situ chemical oxidation. Outcomes also provide new insights into the activation mechanisms when persulfate is used for the remediation of contaminated soils.

The ability of cortical networks to integrate information from different sources is essential for cognitive processes. On one hand, sensory areas exhibit fast dynamics often phase-locked to stimulation; on the other hand, frontal lobe areas with slow response latencies to stimuli must integrate and maintain information for longer periods. Thus, cortical areas may require different timescales depending on their functional role. Studying the cortical somatosensory network while monkeys discriminated between two vibrotactile stimulus patterns, we found that a hierarchical order could be established across cortical areas based on their intrinsic timescales. Further, even though subareas (areas 3b, 1, and 2) of the primary somatosensory (S1) cortex exhibit analogous firing rate responses, a clear differentiation was observed in their timescales. Importantly, we observed that this inherent timescale hierarchy was invariant between task contexts (demanding vs. nondemanding). Even if task context severely affected neural coding in cortical areas downstream to S1, their timescales remained unaffected. Moreover, we found that these time constants were invariant across neurons with different latencies or coding. Although neurons had completely different dynamics, they all exhibited comparable timescales within each cortical area. Our results suggest that this measure is demonstrative of an inherent characteristic of each cortical area, is not a dynamical feature of individual neurons, and does not depend on task demands.

INTRODUCTION: Sense of authentic inner compass (AIC) is the feeling that one knows what is important to oneself because one has values, aspirations, and goals with which one deeply identifies. Past research demonstrated the benefits of AIC, but there is no published research on parental dispositions promoting youth AIC. To increase knowledge of this issue, we examined whether mothers' sense of AIC is associated with a corresponding sense of AIC in their children, and explored autonomy-supportive child-rearing practices that may serve as pathways linking mothers' AIC with adolescents' AIC and subsequent well-being. We examined a Bedouin Israeli sample because it represents a fairly patriarchal, autonomy-eschewing, context, where the benefits of mothers' authenticity and autonomy-support are not obvious. METHOD: One hundred and thirty-six mothers (Mean age = 44.33, SD = 5.22) and their children (Mean age = 13.79, SD = 0.45; 60% females) participated in a study conducted in June 2019. RESULTS: SEM analyses supported a model where mothers' sense of firm AIC was linked with adolescents' sense of firm AIC via adolescents' experience of their mothers as using the practices of inherent value demonstration and fostering inner valuing. Adolescent reported AIC in turn was associated with adolescents reported vitality and low levels of depressive symptoms. Mothers' AIC was associated with minimal use of conditional regard, which was negatively associated with depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that mothers' AIC may be an important parenting resource, enabling mothers to convincingly demonstrate their values, as well as foster children's attunement to their authentic preferences, even in patriarchal-hierarchical contexts.

The presence of a pneumothorax within a pressurized chamber represents unique diagnostic and management challenges. This is particularly the case in the medical and geographic remoteness of many chamber locations. Upon commencing chamber decompression, unvented intrapleural air expands. If its initial volume and/or degree of chamber pressure reduction is significant enough, a tension pneumothorax will result. Numerous reports chronicle failure to diagnose and manage in-chamber pneumothorax with resultant morbidity and one fatal outcome. Such cases have occurred in both medically remote and clinically based settings. This paper reviews pneumothorax and tension pneumothorax risk factors and clinical characteristics. It suggests primary medical management using the principle of oxygen-induced inherent unsaturation in concert with titrated chamber decompression designed to prevent intrapleural air expanding faster than it contracts. Should this conservative approach prove unsuccessful, and surgical venting becomes necessary or otherwise immediately indicated, interventional options are reviewed.

In-chamber pneumothorax has complicated medically remote professional diving operations, submarine escape training, management of decompression illness, and hospital-based provision of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Attempts to avoid thoracotomy by combination of high oxygen partial pressure breathing (the concept of inherent unsaturation) and greatly slowed rates of chamber decompression proved successful on several occasions. When this delicate balance designed to prevent the intrapleural gas volume from expanding faster than it contracts proved futile, chest drains were inserted. The presence of pneumothorax was misdiagnosed or missed altogether with disturbing frequency, resulting in wide-ranging clinical consequences. One patient succumbed before the chamber had been fully decompressed. Another was able to ambulate unaided from the chamber before being diagnosed and managed conventionally. In between these two extremes, patients experienced varying degrees of clinical compromise, from respiratory distress to cardiopulmonary arrest, with successful resuscitation. Pneumothorax associated with manned chamber operations is commonly considered to develop while the patient is under pressure and manifests during ascent. However, published reports suggest that many were pre-existing prior to chamber entry. Risk factors included pulmonary barotrauma-induced cerebral arterial gas embolism, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and medical or surgical procedures usually involving the lung. This latter category is of heightened importance to hyperbaric operations as an iatrogenically induced pneumothorax may take as long as 24 hours to be detected, perhaps long after a patient has been cleared for chamber exposure.

Inherently chiral calix[4]arenes are an excellent structural scaffold for enantioselective synthesis, chiral recognition, sensing, and circularly polarized luminescence. However, their catalytic enantioselective synthesis remains challenging. Herein, we report an efficient synthesis of inherently chiral calix[4]arene derivatives via cascade enantioselective cyclization and oxidation reactions. The three-component reaction features a broad substrate scope (33 examples), high efficiency (up to 90 % yield), and excellent enantioselectivity (>95 % ee on average). The potential applications of calix[4]arene derivatives are highlighted by their synthetic transformation and a detailed investigation of their photophysical and chiroptical properties.

Inherent chirality is used to describe chiral cyclic molecules devoid of central, axial, planar, or helical chirality and has tremendous applications in chiral recognition and enantioselective synthesis. Catalytic and divergent syntheses of inherently chiral molecules have attracted increasing interest from chemists. Herein, we report the enantioselective synthesis of inherently chiral tribenzocycloheptene derivatives via chiral phosphoric acid (CPA)-catalyzed condensation of cyclic ketones and hydroxylamines. This chemistry paves the way to accessing the less stable derivatives of 7-membered rings with inherent chirality. A series of chiral tribenzocycloheptene oxime ethers was synthesized in good yields (up to 97 %) with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99 % ee).

Powdery mildew in cucumber is caused by the Podosphaera xanthii. No strategy for improving disease resistance can be successful in the absence of thorough insights into the physiological and biochemical responses of cucumber plants to powdery mildew. Therefore, a field experiment was executed to evaluate five commercial cucumber varieties (V1: Dynasty, V2: Long green, V3:Desi Kheera, V4:Thamin II, V5:Cucumber 363) for their inherent immunity to powdery mildew. Upon inoculating cucumber plants with Podosphaera xanthii, we noted differential responses among the varieties. Compared to other varieties, V1 and V2 showed higher values (P ≤ 0.05) for chlorophyll-a under control and pathogen-attacked plants respectively. The minimum value of anthocyanin content (-53.73%) was recorded in V3 as compared to other varieties post pathogen infection. All pathogen-infected cucumber varieties showed a considerable (P ≤ 0.05) loss in flavonoid content except V2. The maximum destruction for Phenolics under powdery mildew (179%) were recorded in V4, whereas V1 exhibited maximum phenolic content under control conditions. In pathogen-infected plants, the minimum AsA was recorded in V5 as compared to all other varieties. Pathogen invasion impacted significantly (P ≤ 0.05) the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD). Besides, cucumber plants after pathogen inoculation resulted in a considerable (P ≤ 0.05) increase of peroxidase (POD) activity in V1 (5.02%), V2 (7.5%), and V3 (11%) in contrast to V4. Our results confirmed that cucumber varieties perform differently, which was brought on by distinct metabolic and physiological modifications that have an impact on growth and development. The changes in different attributes were correlated with cucumber resistance against powdery mildew. The results would help us fully harness the potential of these varieties to trigger disease management initiatives and defense responses.

A group of steroidogenic enzymes, hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases are involved in steroid metabolism which is very important in the cell: signaling, growth, reproduction, and energy homeostasis. The enzymes show an inherent function in the interconversion of ketosteroids and hydroxysteroids in a position- and stereospecific manner on the steroid nucleus and side-chains. However, the biocatalysis of steroids reaction is a vital and demanding, yet challenging, task to produce the desired enantiopure products with non-natural substrates or non-natural cofactors, and/or in non-physiological conditions. This has driven the use of protein design strategies to improve their inherent biosynthetic efficiency or activate their silent catalytic ability. In this review, the innate features and catalytic characteristics of enzymes based on sequence-structure-function relationships of steroidogenic enzymes are reviewed. Combining structure information and catalytic mechanisms, progress in protein redesign to stimulate potential function, for example, substrate specificity, cofactor dependence, and catalytic stability are discussed.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is developing towards "targeted therapy", which faces challenges such as low sensitivity and drug resistance. Therefore, targeted drugs need to be used in combination with other drugs to overcome clinical problems. OBJECTIVE: AML cells and animal models were used to determine the synergistic anti-leukemic effect of Dactolisib (BEZ235) and Venetoclax (ABT199) and explore its mechanism. METHODS: In vitro experiments, we used cell counting kit-8 (CCK8), flow cytometry, real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR), and Western blot to detect the anti-leukemic effects of ABT199 and BEZ235. In vivo experiments, female nude mice were injected subcutaneously with THP-1 cells to form tumors, evaluate the combined effect of ABT199 and BEZ235 by indicators such as tumor size, tumor weight, Ki67 and cleaved-Caspase3 staining. The mice's body weight and HE staining were used to evaluate the liver injury and adverse drug reactions. RESULTS: The combination of BEZ235 and ABT199 has a synergistic effect through promoting apoptosis and inhibiting proliferation. The BEZ235 increased the drug sensitivity of ABT199 by reducing the MCL-1 protein synthesis and promoted the degradation of MCL-1 protein, which is considered as the mechanism of reversing ABT199 resistance. Furthermore, the BEZ235 and ABT199 can synergistically enhance the inhibition of PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. CONCLUSION: The combination of BEZ235 and ABT199 exhibits a synergistic anti-tumor effect in AML by down-regulating MCL-1 protein.

Data mining (DM) has been applied in many advanced science and technology fields, but it has still not been used for domino effect risk management to explore minimum risk scenarios. This work investigates the feasibility of DM in minimizing the risk of fire-induced domino effects in chemical processing facilities. Based on DM, an evidential failure mode and effects analysis (E-FMEA), which could bridge chemical facilities' operational reliability and domino effect risk, is combined with fault tree analysis (FTA) for the occurrence risk modeling of loss of containment (LOC) event of chemical facilities, which is often the triggering point of fire-induced domino effects. Industry specific data such as reliability data, inspection records, and maintenance records are of great value to model the potential occurrence criticality of LOC. The data are used to characterize the LOC risk priority number (RPN) of chemical facilities through FTA and E-FMEA, search and statistics rules are proposed to mine inspection records to assess LOC risk factors. According to the RPN scores of facilities, inherent safety strategies to minimize risk via inventory control are proposed, and their effectiveness is tested using a well-known probit model. In this way, the approach proposes a unit-specific evidence-based risk minimization strategy for fire-induced domino effects. A case study demonstrates the capability of DM in the risk minimization of fire-induced domino effects.

PURPOSE: The femoral anteversion angle is considered to be the same as femoral torsion; however, the femoral anteversion angle is strongly influenced by the femoral posterior condylar morphology. It remains unclear whether the femoral anteversion angle and axial orientation of the femoral trochlea can predict patellar instability. This study aimed to redefine the femoral inherent torsion, verify whether the femoral anteversion angle reflects the femoral inherent torsion, and compare the validity and calculate the cut-off values of the femoral anteversion angle and femoral trochlear axial orientation for predicting patellar instability. METHODS: Seventy-three patients with patellar instability and 73 matched controls underwent computed tomography to measure the femoral anteversion angle, femoral inherent torsion, and femoral trochlear axial orientation. Pearson's product moment correlation coefficients and linear regression were calculated to determine correlations between measurements. Receiver operating characteristic curves and nomograms were plotted to evaluate the predictive validity of the femoral anteversion angle and femoral trochlear axial orientation for patellar instability. RESULTS: All measurements showed excellent intra- and inter-observer reliability. Compared with the control group, the patellar instability group had a significantly larger femoral anteversion angle (25.4 ± 6.4° vs. 20.2 ± 4.5°) and femoral inherent torsion (18.3 ± 6.7° vs. 15.8 ± 3.4°), and significantly smaller femoral trochlear axial orientation (58.1 ± 7.3° vs. 66.9 ± 5.1°). The femoral anteversion angle and femoral trochlear axial orientation had area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values of 79 and 84%, respectively, and cut-off values of 24.5° and 62.7°, respectively. The calibration curve and decision curve analysis showed that the femoral trochlear axial orientation performed better than the femoral anteversion angle in predicting patellar instability. There was a strong correlation between the femoral anteversion angle and femoral inherent torsion (r > 0.8). Linear regression analysis of the femoral inherent torsion with the femoral anteversion angle as the prediction variate showed moderate goodness-of-fit (adjusted R2 = 0.69). CONCLUSION: The femoral anteversion angle moderately reflects the femoral inherent torsion. The femoral trochlear axial orientation is better than the femoral anteversion in predicting patellar instability in terms of predictive efficiency, consistency with reality, and net clinical benefit. These findings warn orthopaedists against overstating the role of the femoral anteversion angle in patellar instability, and suggest that the femoral trochlear axial orientation could aid in identifying at-risk patients and developing surgical strategies for patellar instability. Unique identification of machine parts is critical to production and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) processes in the aerospace industry. Despite recent advances in automating these identification processes, many are still performed manually. This is time-consuming, labour-intensive and prone to error, particularly when dealing with visually similar objects that lack distinctive features or markings or when dealing with parts that lack readable identifiers due to factors such as dirt, wear and discolouration. Automation of these processes has the potential to alleviate these problems. However, due to the high visual similarity of components in the aerospace industry, commonly used object identifiers are not directly transferable to this domain. This work focuses on the challenging component spectrum engine tubes and aims to understand which identification method using only object-inherent properties can be applied to such problems. Therefore, this work investigates and proposes a comprehensive set of methods using 2D image or 3D point cloud data, incorporating digital image processing and deep learning approaches. Each of these methods is implemented to address the identification problem. A comprehensive benchmark problem is presented, consisting of a set of visually similar demonstrator tubes, which lack distinctive visual features or markers and pose a challenge to the different methods. We evaluate the performance of each algorithm to determine its potential applicability to the target domain and problem statement. Our results indicate a clear superiority of 3D approaches over 2D image analysis approaches, with PointNet and point cloud alignment achieving the best results in the benchmark.

Confronted with the treacherous digital wave and the aggressive environmental challenges, digital technology and green innovation are becoming critical tools for corporations to secure a sustainable advantage. The significance of identifying the role of digital technology application on corporate green innovation has been widely debated in the extant literature. Nevertheless, few researchers have investigated the inherent mechanism between them from the resource allocation perspective. From this research gap, we construct a theoretical model of the inherent mechanism by which digital technology application affects corporate green innovation, validate it using listed corporations in China from 2011 to 2020, and further investigate the differences in their inherent mechanism triggered by property rights and industry competition. We found that digital technology application is effective in promoting corporate green innovation. Stronger green innovation effect of digital technology application in state-owned corporations and those in highly competitive industries. The inherent mechanism between them manifest in optimizing the allocation of conventional labor, expanding the scale of non-conventional labor, and enhancing investment in R&D and digital infrastructure capital. We further explored that the impact of applying digital technology to optimize conventional labor allocation, expand non-conventional labor scale, and enhance investment in R&D and digital infrastructure capital is stronger for corporations in highly competitive industries than those in lowly competitive industries. The difference is that the role of the digital technology application in boosting capital investment in R&D does not differ across corporations with different property rights. Findings provide theoretical and empirical evidence on effectively developing the digital technology application's green innovative effects.

Dry grape peel powder was extracted by three different techniques, stirred tank reactor, Soxhlet and ultrasound extraction. The composition, physical and chemical structure and inherent stability of the extracts were characterized by various methods. The extracts and reference compounds were added to polyethylene and their stabilization efficiency was determined in multiple extrusion experiments. The composition of the extracts was quite similar. Ten main compounds were identified in the extracts, which contained a considerable number of polyphenols, but only small amounts of quercetin and trans-resveratrol. The extracts proved to be more efficient processing stabilizers than trans-resveratrol and the commercial stabilizer, Irganox 1010, irrespective of the extraction technology used. In spite of their good processing stabilization effect, polymers containing the extracts had poor residual stability. The differences in processing and long-term stabilization must be related to the different structures of the polyphenols contained by the extracts and the reference compounds. The results clearly prove that the IC50 value determined by the DPPH assay is not suitable for the estimation of the efficiency of a compound as a stabilizer for polymers.

For many purposes in England and Wales, the Court of Protection determines whether a person has or lacks capacity to make a decision, by applying the test within the Mental Capacity Act 2005. This test is regularly described as a cognitive test with cognitive processes discussed as internal characteristics. However, it is unclear how the courts have framed interpersonal influence as negatively impacting upon a person's decision-making processes in a capacity assessment context. We reviewed published court judgments in England and Wales in which interpersonal problems were discussed as relevant to capacity. Through content analysis, we developed a typology that highlights five ways the courts considered influence to be problematic to capacity across these cases. Interpersonal influence problems were constructed as (i) P's inability to preserve their free will or independence, (ii) restricting P's perspective, (iii) valuing or dependence on a relationship, (iv) acting on a general suggestibility to influence, or (v) P denying facts about the relationship. These supposed mechanisms of interpersonal influence problems are poorly understood and clearly merit further consideration. Our typology and case discussion are a start towards more detailed practice guidelines, and raise questions as to whether mental capacity and influence should remain legally distinct.

Single-cell bioelectrical properties are commonly used for blood cell phenotyping in a label-free manner. However, previously reported inherent single-cell bioelectrical parameters (e.g., diameter Dc , specific membrane capacitance Csm and cytoplasmic conductivity σcy ) of neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils were obtained from only tens of individual cells with limited statistical significance. In this study, granulocytes were separated into neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils based on fluorescent flow cytometry, which were further aspirated through a constriction-microchannel impedance flow cytometry for electrical property characterization. Based on this microfluidic impedance flow cytometry, single-cell values of Dc , Csm and σcy were measured as 10.25 ± 0.66 µm, 2.17 ± 0.30 µF/cm2 , and 0.37 ± 0.05 S/m for neutrophils (ncell  = 9442); 9.73 ± 0.51 µm, 2.07 ± 0.19 µF/cm2 , and 0.30 ± 0.04 S/m for eosinophils (ncell  = 2982); 9.75 ± 0.49 µm, 2.06 ± 0.17 µF/cm2 , and 0.31 ± 0.04 S/m for basophils (ncell  = 5377). Based on these inherent single-cell bioelectrical parameters, neural pattern recognition was conducted, producing classification rates of 80.8% (neutrophil vs. eosinophil), 77.7% (neutrophil vs. basophil) and 59.3% (neutrophil vs. basophil). These results indicate that as inherent single-cell bioelectrical parameters, Dc , Csm and σcy can be used to classify neutrophils from eosinophils or basophils to some extent while they cannot be used to effectively distinguish eosinophils from basophils.
