RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the quality of life of patients with central precocious puberty (CPP) who required treatment and premature thelarche (PT) followed up without treatment and to compare the groups with and without treatment among themselves and with healthy children. DESIGN, PATIENTS AND MEASUREMENT: This study is designed as a case-control study. A total of 193 children including 59 children with CPP, 53 children with PT, 81 healthy children and their parents were included in the study. A questionnaire was applied to evaluate the sociodemographic characteristics that would affect the quality of life. The 'Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL)' was used to assess the quality of life. RESULTS: The PedsQL total scale score was 78.10 ± 17.13, 79.35 ± 11.54 and 79.52 ± 14.65, the psychosocial health summary score was 78.86 ± 16.83, 79.40 ± 12.54 and 79.94 ± 14.94 and physical health summary score was 75.81 ± 20.69, 79.41 ± 15.04 and 78.25 ± 17.52 in CPP, PT and control groups, respectively; however, there was no statistical difference (p > .05). In the scale administered to the parents, scores were similar in the three groups. No difference was found between CPP, PT and control groups in terms of sociodemographic data in the study (p > .05). CONCLUSION: Unlike previous studies, in this study the effects of sociodemographic characteristics and whether treatment was initiated or not on quality of life were investigated. Although the scale scores of the CPP group were lower than the PT and control group, there was no statistically significant difference, indicating that quality of life was not negatively affected in the CPP group receiving treatment.

RESUMO

Tree allometric models, essential for monitoring and predicting terrestrial carbon stocks, are traditionally built on global databases with forest inventory measurements of stem diameter (D) and tree height (H). However, these databases often combine H measurements obtained through various measurement methods, each with distinct error patterns, affecting the resulting H:D allometries. In recent decades, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has emerged as a widely accepted method for accurate, non-destructive tree structural measurements. This study used TLS data to evaluate the prediction accuracy of forest inventory-based H:D allometries and to develop more accurate pantropical allometries. We considered 19 tropical rainforest plots across four continents. Eleven plots had forest inventory and RIEGL VZ-400(i) TLS-based D and H data, allowing accuracy assessment of local forest inventory-based H:D allometries. Additionally, TLS-based data from 1951 trees from all 19 plots were used to create new pantropical H:D allometries for tropical rainforests. Our findings reveal that in most plots, forest inventory-based H:D allometries underestimated H compared with TLS-based allometries. For 30-metre-tall trees, these underestimations varied from -1.6 m (-5.3%) to -7.5 m (-25.4%). In the Malaysian plot with trees reaching up to 77 m in height, the underestimation was as much as -31.7 m (-41.3%). We propose a TLS-based pantropical H:D allometry, incorporating maximum climatological water deficit for site effects, with a mean uncertainty of 19.1% and a mean bias of -4.8%. While the mean uncertainty is roughly 2.3% greater than that of the Chave2014 model, this model demonstrates more consistent uncertainties across tree size and delivers less biased estimates of H (with a reduction of 8.23%). In summary, recognizing the errors in H measurements from forest inventory methods is vital, as they can propagate into the allometries they inform. This study underscores the potential of TLS for accurate H and D measurements in tropical rainforests, essential for refining tree allometries.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Screening for depression in people with epilepsy (PWE) is highly recommended in order to avoid underdiagnosis, misdiagnosis, or delayed diagnosis of this highly impacting comorbidity. Here we evaluated the impact of reporting and suggesting depression via the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) on medical decision-making, and thereby the value of a depression screening for good medical practice. METHODS: Of 445 BDI data sets, PWE with scores indicating moderate (BDI 19-29) to severe depressive disorder (BDI >29) were extracted and clinical reports were retrospectively reviewed regarding decisions on antidepressants, anti-seizure medications (ASMs), and non-pharmaceutical interventions. RESULTS: Sixty-four PWE (14%; 56% female; mean age 39.7 years) showed elevated BDI scores, with 40 (63%) categorized as moderate depression and 24 (37%) as severe depression. Thirty-nine percent of PWE already had a pre-existing diagnosis of depression and 53% left the clinic with the diagnosis of depression, half of them with antidepressants. High depression scores were associated with any intervention in 53%, interventions with potentially mood affecting ASM in 19%, treatment with antidepressants in 11%, and non-pharmaceutical interventions in 41%. Non-pharmaceutical interventions were related to BDI scores. Changes of potentially mood-affecting ASMs were more frequent in PWE with moderate scores, and introduction of antidepressants appeared as a trend related to higher depression scores. SIGNIFICANCE: The finding of an only weak relation between high depression scores, diagnoses of depression, and treatment consequences questions the diagnosis and treatment pathway and the clinical value of the BDI screening in PWE. Prospective standard procedures need to be established for depression diagnosis and treatment including follow-up evaluations of the validity of the diagnosis and effectiveness of the decisions taken.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The recent combination of genomics and single cell transcriptomics has allowed to assess a variety of non-conventional model organisms in much more depth. Single cell transcriptomes can uncover hidden cellular complexity and cell lineage relationships within organisms. The recent developmental cell atlases of the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis, a representative of the basally branching Cnidaria, has provided new insights into the development of all cell types (Steger et al Cell Rep 40(12):111370, 2022; Sebé-Pedrós et al. Cell 173(6):1520-1534.e20). However, the mapping of the single cell reads still suffers from relatively poor gene annotations and a draft genome consisting of many scaffolds. RESULTS: Here we present a new wildtype resource of the developmental single cell atlas, by re-mapping of sequence data first published in Steger et al. (2022) and Cole et al. (Nat Commun 14(1):1747, 2023), to the new chromosome-level genome assembly and corresponding gene models in Zimmermann et al. (Nat Commun 14, 8270 (2023). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-023-44080-7 ). We expand the pre-existing dataset through the incorporation of additional sequence data derived from the capture and sequencing of cell suspensions from four additional samples: 24 h gastrula, 2d planula, an inter-parietal region of the bodywall from a young unsexed animal, and another adult mesentery from a mature male animal. CONCLUSION: Our analyses of the full cell-state inventory provide transcriptomic signatures for 127 distinct cell states, of which 47 correspond to neuroglandular subtypes. We also identify two distinct putatively immune-related transcriptomic profiles that segregate between the inner and outer cell layers. Furthermore, the new gene annotation Nv2 has markedly improved the mapping on the single cell transcriptome data and will therefore be of great value for the community and anyone using the dataset.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Solid organ transplant surgeries including liver transplants constitute a substantial risk of bleeding complications and given frequent national blood shortages, supporting D-negative transplant recipients with D-negative red blood cell products perioperatively can be difficult for the transfusion services. This study was designed to compare the incidence of alloimmunization after D-mismatched red cell transfusions between patients with and without a history of solid organ transplant at a single tertiary care hospital. The patients undergoing solid organ transplants are on strong immunosuppressive regimens perioperatively to help reduce the risk of rejection. We hypothesized that the use of these immunosuppressive agents makes these patients very less likely to mount an immune response and form anti-D antibodies when exposed to the D-positive red blood cell products perioperatively. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: At our center, D-negative patients who received ≥1 unit of D-positive red blood cell products were identified using historical transfusion records. Antibody testing results were examined to determine the incidence of the formation of anti-D and any other red cell alloantibodies after transfusion and these results were compared between patients with and without a history of solid organ transplant. RESULTS: We were able to identify a total of 22 patients over 10 years with D-negative phenotype who had undergone a solid organ transplant and had received D-positive red blood cell products during the transplant surgeries. We also identified a second group of 54 patients with D-negative phenotype who had received D-positive red blood cell products for other indications including medical and surgical. A comparison of the data showed no new anti-D formation among patients with a history of D mismatched transfusion during solid organ transplant surgeries. CONCLUSION: Among our limited study population, we observed a very low likelihood of D alloimmunization among solid organ transplant recipients. A larger, prospective study could help further evaluate the need for prophylactic D matching for red cell transfusions during solid organ transplant surgeries.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric surgeons are experiencing burnout at similar rates to other subspecialists; however, little is known about the prevalence of burnout in pediatric general surgery fellows. This study aims to determine the prevalence of burnout in pediatric general surgery trainees. METHODS: The Maslach Burnout Inventory and a survey of personal and training characteristics were distributed to current and recently graduated pediatric surgery fellows. Higher Maslach Burnout Inventory subscores of emotional exhaustion (EE) and depersonalization (DP) indicate higher levels of burnout. Descriptive statistics were used to describe respondent characteristics. Burnout, as a dichotomous variable, was compared by chi-square test, and subscale scores werecompared by nonparametric tests for a variety of factors. RESULTS: The response rate was 41% (52/126); 15% were first-year fellows, 54% were second-year fellows, and 31% were recent graduates. The majority were 30-39 y old (83%) and female (71%). The median [IQR] scores for EE, DP, and personal accomplishment were 23 [17-36], 8 [2-12.3], and 38 [34-41], respectively, with no significant differences by training year. Eighteen percent of respondents met burnout criteria based on high-risk EE subscores in combination with high-risk DP subscores, and 44% and 23.1% of respondents had high-risk EE and DP subscores, respectively. Factors associated with higher EE subscores were fewer hours of sleep and taking home call. CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric surgery fellows experience high levels of burnout along with a high frequency of high-risk EE and DP scores. Lack of sleep and home call may be contributory, and efforts to combat burnout should specifically address these factors.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Dementia is caused by various diseases, including Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). We often encounter patients with dementia who have limited shoulder joint range of motion (ROM), especially those with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). But the relationship between the diseases of dementia and restricted shoulder joint ROM is currently unclear. METHODS: We examined cognitive function and shoulder joint ROM in 234 new outpatients at 7 memory clinics in Japan. We assessed cognitive function using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Revised Hasegawa Dementia Scale (HDS-R) and BPSD using the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire (NPI-Q). Patients were categorized by dementia diagnosis (ADD, DLB, other dementia, and control). Right, left, and total shoulder joint ROM was assessed using validated the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score. RESULTS: We found significant associations of lower right, left, and total shoulder joint ROM scores with male sex, advanced age, higher NPI-Q score, lower HDS-R, and MMSE scores. Little difference was found between right and left shoulder joint ROM scores. Restricted shoulder joint ROM was related to serial 7, verbal frequency domain scores on the HDS-R and repeat score on the MMSE. It was also related to the hallucinations, irritability/lability and nighttime disturbances scores on the NPI-Q. Furthermore, the dementia groups, especially the DLB group, showed worse shoulder joint ROM than the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Dementia was significantly related to restricted shoulder joint ROM. Maintaining communication and social interaction may help maintain shoulder joint ROM.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Pediatric Quality of Life InventoryTM Version 4.0 Generic Core Scales (PedsQL GCS), comprising 23 items covering four sub-scales (physical, emotional, social, and school functioning), is a widely applied generic measure of childhood health-related quality of life, but does not provide health utilities for cost-effectiveness-based decision-making. This study aimed to develop a reduced item version of PedsQL GCS amenable to health utility derivation in Australia. METHODS: Data sources were two cohorts of the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children, including proxy responses for all PedsQL GCS versions (Toddlers, Young Children, Children, Teens), and the CheckPoint sample containing child self-report to the Children version. Three analytic samples were: CheckPoint sample (n=1,874); Mallinson sample containing one measurement per child from one of the Young Children, Children or Teens versions (n=7,855); and Toddlers sample (n=7,401). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses assessed dimensionality. Psychometric analyses used Rasch and classical criteria on three randomly selected subsamples (n=500) per sample. Item selection prioritised psychometric performance in CheckPoint sample, also considering performance in other samples and conceptual content. RESULTS: Dimensionality assessments did not generate an alternative empirical structure for the measure, and psychometric analyses were conducted on the original four sub-scales. The selected items were: 'Get aches and pains' for physical functioning; 'Feel sad/blue' for emotional functioning; 'Other kids not friends' for social functioning; and 'Keeping up with school work' for school functioning. CONCLUSIONS: The final four-item set, pending further psychometric validation and valuation, can generate health utilities from the widely used PedsQL GCS to inform cost-effectiveness-based decision-making.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dimension reduction methods do not always reduce their underlying indicators to a single composite score. Furthermore, such methods are usually based on optimality criteria that require discarding some information. We suggest, under some conditions, to use the joint probability density function (joint pdf or JPD) of p-dimensional random variable (the p indicators), as an index or a composite score. It is proved that this index is more informative than any alternative composite score. In two examples, we compare the JPD index with some alternatives constructed from traditional methods. METHODS: We develop a probabilistic unsupervised dimension reduction method based on the probability density of multivariate data. We show that the conditional distribution of the variables given JPD is uniform, implying that the JPD is the most informative scalar summary under the most common notions of information. B. We show under some widely plausible conditions, JPD can be used as an index. To use JPD as an index, in addition to having a plausible interpretation, all the random variables should have approximately the same direction(unidirectionality) as the density values (codirectionality). We applied these ideas to two data sets: first, on the 7 Brief Pain Inventory Interference scale (BPI-I) items obtained from 8,889 US Veterans with chronic pain and, second, on a novel measure based on administrative data for 912 US Veterans. To estimate the JPD in both examples, among the available JPD estimation methods, we used its conditional specifications, identified a well-fitted parametric model for each factored conditional (regression) specification, and, by maximizing the corresponding likelihoods, estimated their parameters. Due to the non-uniqueness of conditional specification, the average of all estimated conditional specifications was used as the final estimate. Since a prevalent common use of indices is ranking, we used measures of monotone dependence [e.g., Spearman's rank correlation (rho)] to assess the strength of unidirectionality and co-directionality. Finally, we cross-validate the JPD score against variance-covariance-based scores (factor scores in unidimensional models), and the "person's parameter" estimates of (Generalized) Partial Credit and Graded Response IRT models. We used Pearson Divergence as a measure of information and Shannon's entropy to compare uncertainties (informativeness) in these alternative scores. RESULTS: An unsupervised dimension reduction was developed based on the joint probability density (JPD) of the multi-dimensional data. The JPD, under regularity conditions, may be used as an index. For the well-established Brief Pain Interference Inventory (BPI-I (the short form with 7 Items) and for a new mental health severity index (MoPSI) with 6 indicators, we estimated the JPD scoring. We compared, assuming unidimensionality, factor scores, Person's scores of the Partial Credit model, the Generalized Partial Credit model, and the Graded Response model with JPD scoring. As expected, all scores' rankings in both examples were monotonically dependent with various strengths. Shannon entropy was the smallest for JPD scores. Pearson Divergence of the estimated densities of different indices against uniform distribution was maximum for JPD scoring. CONCLUSIONS: An unsupervised probabilistic dimension reduction is possible. When appropriate, the joint probability density function can be used as the most informative index. Model specification and estimation and steps to implement the scoring were demonstrated. As expected, when the required assumption in factor analysis and IRT models are satisfied, JPD scoring agrees with these established scores. However, when these assumptions are violated, JPD scores preserve all the information in the indicators with minimal assumption.

RESUMO

Burnout among radiologists is increasingly prevalent, with the potential for having a substantial negative impact on physician well-being, delivery of care, and health outcomes. To evaluate this phenomenon using reliable and accurate means, validated quantitative instruments are essential. Variation in measurement can contribute to wide-ranging findings. This article evaluates radiologist burnout rates globally and dimensions of burnout as reported using different validated instruments; it also provides guidance on best practices to characterize burnout. Fifty-seven studies published between 1990 and 2023 were included in a systematic review, and 43 studies were included in a meta-analysis of burnout prevalence using random-effects models. The reported burnout prevalence ranged from 5% to 85%. With the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), burnout prevalence varied significantly depending on the instrument version used. Among MBI subcategories, the pooled prevalence of emotional exhaustion was 54% (95% CI, 45-63%), depersonalization was 52% (95% CI, 41-63%), and low personal accomplishment was 36% (95% CI, 27-47%). Other validated burnout instruments showed less heterogeneous results; studies using the Stanford Professional Fulfillment Index yielded a burnout prevalence of 39% (95% CI, 34-45%), whereas the validated single-item instrument yielded a burnout prevalence of 34% (95% CI, 29-39%). Standardized instruments for assessing prevalence alongside multidimensional profiles capturing experiences may better characterize radiologist burnout, including change occurring over time.

RESUMO

We sought to determine the utility of the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) in screening for alcohol use disorder (AUD) among 688 users of antiretroviral therapy (ART). We used the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis to assess whether the AUDIT reliably detected AUD against the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM (SCID). Of the samples, 22.09% (CI: 19.05% to 25.38%) of participants met the diagnostic criteria for AUD. Among men (n = 135) and women (n = 553), the prevalence estimates were 31.9% and 19.7%, respectively. For men, a cut-off score of 6 predicted AUD with 88.36% (95%CI: 74.92-96.11) sensitivity and 88.04% (95%CI: 79.61-93.88) specificity. For women, a cut-off score of 4 on the AUDIT yielded an optimal sensitivity of 92.66% (95% CI: 86.05%-96.78%) and a specificity of 93.24% (95% CI: 90.49-95.40%). For men, the AUDIT yielded a positive predictive value (PPV) of 75.55% (95% CI: 66.26%-85.87%) and a negative predictive value (NPV) of 91.49% (95% CI: 87.63-97.37%); for women the PPV and NPV were 77.09% (70.34%-82.68%) and 98.11% (96.37%-99.02%), respectively. The instrument's good sensitivity and specificity indicate it is likely to be useful for screening and referral of ART users who are probably cases of AUD.

RESUMO

Private land protection is an important and growing tool to address biodiversity loss and climate change. Thus, better empirical evidence on the effectiveness of private land protection and organizational practices, such as targeting of lands for protection and choice of protection mechanism (i.e., fee simple land acquisition and conservation easements), is needed. We addressed this gap by estimating the impacts of The Nature Conservancy's (TNC) (a large nongovernmental organization with relatively decentralized management) conservation land acquisitions and easements from 1988 to 2016 in three regions of the United States (Mid-Atlantic, New England and New York, and California). We estimated impact in terms of avoided conversion by comparing natural land cover on 3179 protected parcels with matched unprotected parcels. Nineteen of 21 ecoregional plans used threats of agriculture and development to identify priorities for protection. When regions and protection mechanisms were pooled, on average there was no evidence of avoided conversion from 1988 to 2016. Accounting for mechanisms, TNC land acquisitions avoided conversion and easements did not. TNC's easements on parcels acquired by conservation partners did avoid conversion. Limitations of these results include focus on a single measure of impact, inability to capture future avoided conversion, and low land cover change accuracy in California. Our results suggest that private land protection managers who seek to avoid land conversion in the near to medium term should increase focus on areas with higher threats. Special attention should be paid to strengthening accountability and the role of partners, improving or clarifying how easements are used, and facilitating the flow of resources to work with the greatest potential impact.

As a substitute for brominated flame retardants, organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) have become a global concern due to their high toxicity and bioaccumulation. To paint an overall picture of OPFRs in the global environment, the present study develops a gridded global emission inventory of OPFRs on a spatial resolution of 1 × 1° from 2010 to 2020. Revealing a 3.31% average annual increase in emissions, totaling 21,324.42 tons. The production process is the primary source, accounting for 55.43% of emissions, with consumption processes making up the rest. Major sources are in Asia, North America, and Europe. The inventory is verified by implementing emission data into a global atmospheric transport model to predict OPFR concentrations in the global environment and comparing modeled concentrations with field sampled data. The results indicate that the inventory is reliable except for the pristine polar region, where the emission inventory and modeled concentrations underestimate OPFR levels in the atmosphere, likely resulting from ignorance of chemical reactions and the secondary derivative of parent OPFRs during their global long-distance atmospheric transport in the model. This comprehensive data set aids in formulating OPFR emission control policies and assessing health risks.

RESUMO

Methane emissions from the global oil and gas value chain are a major contributor to climate change, and their mitigation could avoid 0.1 °C of warming by 2050. Here, we synthesize nearly a decade of research encompassing thousands of multiscale methane measurements along the oil and gas value chain (production to end use) to better constrain estimates of methane emissions from Canada's energy sector and to identify research gaps contributing to uncertainty in current estimates. We find that total value chain methane emissions are 2,600 (2,100-3,700) kt, which broadly agrees with Canada's latest official inventory that now includes atmospheric measurement data in some of their oil and gas methane estimates. Accurate understanding of emission magnitudes is critical because Canada committed to a 75% reduction of oil and gas methane emissions by 2030. We also identify and discuss information gaps in both emissions and activity data, namely, from the midstream, downstream, and end-use sectors. While they make up a smaller portion of the total inventory, accurate quantification of these emissions is still important and could point to more cost-effective mitigation solutions. This work emphasizes the need for frequent, comprehensive measurements to better constrain the climate impacts of the oil and gas sector and to validate reductions and commitments pledged by industry and governments.

RESUMO

Excessive anthropogenic phosphorus (P) emissions put constant pressure on aquatic ecosystems. This pressure can be quantified as the freshwater eutrophication potential (FEP) by linking P emissions, P fate in environmental compartments, and the potentially disappeared fraction of species due to increase of P concentrations in freshwater. However, previous fate modeling on global and regional scales is mainly based on the eight-direction algorithm without distinguishing pollution sources. The algorithm fails to characterize the fate paths of point-source emissions via subsurface pipelines and wastewater treatment infrastructure, and exhibits suboptimal performance in accounting for multidirectional paths caused by river bifurcations, especially in flat terrains. Here we aim to improve the fate modeling by incorporating various fate paths and addressing multidirectional scenarios. We also update the P estimates by complementing potential untreated point-source emissions (PSu). The improved method is examined in a rapidly urbanizing area in Taihu Lake Basin, China in 2017 at a spatial resolution of 100 m × 100 m. Results show that the contribution of PSu on FEP (62.6%) is greater than that on P emissions (58.5%). The FEP is more spatially widely distributed with the improved fate modeling, facilitating targeted regulatory strategies tailored to local conditions.

RESUMO

Intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs) are important precursors to secondary organic aerosols (SOAs), but they are often neglected in studies concerning SOA formation. This study addresses the significant issue of IVOCs emissions in the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau (QTP), where solid fuels are extensively used under incomplete combustion conditions for residential heating and cooking. Our field measurement data revealed an emission factor of the total IVOCs (EFIVOCs) ranging from 1.56 ± 0.03 to 9.97 ± 3.22 g/kg from various combustion scenarios in QTP. The markedly higher EFIVOCs in QTP than in plain regions can be attributed to oxygen-deficient conditions. IVOCs were dominated by gaseous phase emissions, and the primary contributors of gaseous and particulate phase IVOCs are the unresolved complex mixture and alkanes, respectively. Total IVOCs emissions during the heating and nonheating seasons in QTP were estimated to be 31.7 ± 13.8 and 6.87 ± 0.45 Gg, respectively. The estimated SOA production resulting from combined emissions of IVOCs and VOCs is nearly five times higher than that derived from VOCs alone. Results from this study emphasized the pivotal role of IVOCs emissions in air pollution and provided a foundation for compiling emission inventories related to solid fuel combustion and developing pollution prevention strategies.

RESUMO

Inland waters (rivers, lakes, and reservoirs) and wetlands (marshes and coastal wetlands) represent large and continuous sources of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, in view of adequate biomass and anaerobic conditions. Considerable uncertainties remain in quantifying spatially explicit N2O emissions from aquatic systems, attributable to the limitations of models and a lack of comprehensive data sets. Herein, we conducted a synthesis of 1659 observations of N2O emission rates to determine the major environmental drivers across five aquatic systems. A framework for spatially explicit estimates of N2O emissions in China was established, employing a data-driven approach that upscaled from site-specific N2O fluxes to robust multiple-regression models. Results revealed the effectiveness of models incorporating soil organic carbon and water content for marshes and coastal wetlands, as well as water nitrate concentration and dissolved organic carbon for lakes, rivers, and reservoirs for predicting emissions. Total national N2O emissions from inland waters and wetlands were 1.02 × 105 t N2O yr-1, with contributions from marshes (36.33%), rivers (27.77%), lakes (25.27%), reservoirs (6.47%), and coastal wetlands (4.16%). Spatially, larger emissions occurred in the Songliao River Basin and Continental River Basin, primarily due to their substantial terrestrial biomass. This study offers a vital national inventory of N2O emissions from inland waters and wetlands in China, providing paradigms for the inventorying work in other countries and insights to formulate effective mitigation strategies for climate change.

RESUMO

Isotopic source apportionment results revealed that nonagricultural sectors are significant sources of ammonia (NH3) emissions, particularly in urban areas. Unfortunately, nonagricultural sources have been substantially underrepresented in the current anthropogenic NH3 emission inventories (EIs). Here, we propose a novel approach to develop a gridded EI of nonagricultural NH3 in China for 2016 using a combination of isotopic source apportionment results and the emission ratios of carbon monoxide (CO) and NH3. We estimated that isotope-corrected nonagricultural NH3 emissions were 4370 Gg in China in 2016, accounting for an increase in the total NH3 emissions from 7 to 31%. As a result, compared to the original NH3 EI, the annual emissions of total NH3 increased by 35%. Thus, in comparison to the simulation driven by the original NH3 EI, the WRF-Chem model driven by the isotope-corrected NH3 EI has reduced the model biases in the surface concentrations and dry deposition flux of reduced nitrogen (NHx = gaseous NH3 + particulate NH4+) by 23 and 31%, respectively. This study may have wide-ranging implications for formulating targeted strategies for nonagricultural NH3 emissions controls, making it facilitate the achievement of simultaneously alleviating nitrogen deposition and atmospheric pollution in the future.

RESUMO

Agricultural ponds are a significant source of greenhouse gases, contributing to the ongoing challenge of anthropogenic climate change. Nations are encouraged to account for these emissions in their national greenhouse gas inventory reports. We present a remote sensing approach using open-access satellite imagery to estimate total methane emissions from agricultural ponds that account for (1) monthly fluctuations in the surface area of individual ponds, (2) rates of historical accumulation of agricultural ponds, and (3) the temperature dependence of methane emissions. As a case study, we used this method to inform the 2024 National Greenhouse Gas Inventory reports submitted by the Australian government, in compliance with the Paris Agreement. Total annual methane emissions increased by 58% from 1990 (26 kilotons CH4 year-1) to 2022 (41 kilotons CH4 year-1). This increase is linked to the water surface of agricultural ponds growing by 51% between 1990 (115 kilo hectares; 1,150 km2) and 2022 (173 kilo hectares; 1,730 km2). In Australia, 16,000 new agricultural ponds are built annually, expanding methane-emitting water surfaces by 1,230 ha yearly (12.3 km2 year-1). On average, the methane flux of agricultural ponds in Australia is 0.238 t CH4 ha-1 year-1. These results offer policymakers insights into developing targeted mitigation strategies to curb these specific forms of anthropogenic emissions. For instance, financial incentives, such as carbon or biodiversity credits, can mobilize widespread investments toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing the ecological and environmental values of agricultural ponds. Our data and modeling tools are available on a free cloud-based platform for other countries to adopt this approach.

RESUMO

Recent studies have shown that methane emissions are underestimated by inventories in many US urban areas. This has important implications for climate change mitigation policy at the city, state, and national levels. Uncertainty in both the spatial distribution and sectoral allocation of urban emissions can limit the ability of policy makers to develop appropriately focused emission reduction strategies. Top-down emission estimates based on atmospheric greenhouse gas measurements can help to improve inventories and inform policy decisions. This study presents a new high-resolution (0.02 × 0.02°) methane emission inventory for New York City and its surrounding area, constructed using the latest activity data, emission factors, and spatial proxies. The new high-resolution inventory estimates of methane emissions for the New York-Newark urban area are 1.3 times larger than those for the gridded Environmental Protection Agency inventory. We used aircraft mole fraction measurements from nine research flights to optimize the high-resolution inventory emissions within a Bayesian inversion. These sectorally optimized emissions show that the high-resolution inventory still significantly underestimates methane emissions within the New York-Newark urban area, primarily because it underestimates emissions from thermogenic sources (by a factor of 2.3). This suggests that there remains a gap in our process-based understanding of urban methane emissions.
