RESUMO

The short-beaked echidna is an iconic Australian animal and the most-widespread native mammal, inhabiting diverse environments. The cryptic nature of echidnas has limited research into their ecology in most areas; however, from the well-researched and endangered Kangaroo Island echidna population, we understand that the threats include habitat loss, roads, and invasive species. To obtain more information about echidnas Australia-wide, we established the Echidna Conservation Science Initiative (EchidnaCSI) citizen science project. EchidnaCSI calls on members of the public to submit photographs of wild echidnas and learn to identify and collect echidna scats for molecular analysis. To facilitate participation, we developed a smartphone application as well as ongoing social and traditional media activities and community events. In 3 y, more than 9,000 members of the public have downloaded the EchidnaCSI app, collecting 400 scats and submitting over 8,000 sightings of echidnas from across Australia. A subset of submitted scat samples were subjected to DNA extraction and PCR, which validated the approach of using citizen science for scat collection and viability for molecular analysis. To assess the impact of the project through public participation, we surveyed our participants (n = 944) to understand their demographics and motivations for engagement. Survey results also revealed that EchidnaCSI served as a gateway into citizen science more generally for many participants. EchidnaCSI demonstrates the potential for using citizen science approaches to collect high-quality data and material from a cryptic species over a very large geographic area and the considerable engagement value of citizen science research.

Tasmanian eucalypt forests are among the most carbon-dense in the world, but projected climate change could destabilize this critical carbon sink. While the impact of abiotic factors on forest ecosystem carbon dynamics have received considerable attention, biotic factors such as the input of animal scat are less understood. Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii)-an osteophageous scavenger that can ingest and solubilize nutrients locked in bone material-may subsidize plant and microbial productivity by concentrating bioavailable nutrients (e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus) in scat latrines. However, dramatic declines in devil population densities, driven by the spread of a transmissible cancer, may have underappreciated consequences for soil organic carbon (SOC) storage and forest productivity by altering nutrient cycling. Here, we fuse experimental data and modeling to quantify and predict future changes to forest productivity and SOC under various climate and scat-quality futures. We find that devil scat significantly increases concentrations of nitrogen, ammonium, phosphorus, and phosphate in the soil and shifts soil microbial communities toward those dominated by r-selected (e.g., fast-growing) phyla. Further, under expected increases in temperature and changes in precipitation, devil scat inputs are projected to increase above- and below-ground net primary productivity and microbial biomass carbon through 2100. In contrast, when devil scat is replaced by lower-quality scat (e.g., from non-osteophageous scavengers and herbivores), forest carbon pools are likely to increase more slowly, or in some cases, decline. Together, our results suggest often overlooked biotic factors will interact with climate change to drive current and future carbon pool dynamics in Tasmanian forests.

METHODS: Symptoms were assessed immediately following completion of a rugby match (median 60 minutes). Players removed from the match for assessment due to a head hit were classified as head injured. Controls completed match without head hit. RESULTS: 209 players (67 female; 33 ± 13 years) participated with 80 experiencing a head injury. Symptom severity was significantly greater in head injured (26.2 ± 17.6) compared with controls (8.9 ± 11.5, P < 0.001). 21% of control players reporting >16 symptom severity, misclassifying them as suspected concussion. There were no significant sex differences. Factor analysis produced four symptom clusters of which Headache was most discriminatory between the head injured (median = 1.7) and controls (median = 0.0). CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate that exercise and contact during a game affect symptom assessment, increasing the likelihood of misclassifying players with suspected concussion. Factor characterization of symptoms associated with head injury using an exercised comparison group provides more useful discrimination. These results highlight the necessity for objective measures to diagnose concussions outside of symptom self-report.

Red coloration is considered an economically important trait in some fish species, including spotted scat, a marine aquaculture fish. Erythrophores are gradually covered by melanophores from the embryonic stage. Despite studies of black spot formation and melanophore coloration in the species, little is known about erythrophore development, which is responsible for red coloration. 1-phenyl 2-thiourea (PTU) is a tyrosinase inhibitor commonly used to inhibit melanogenesis and contribute to the visualization of embryonic development. In this study, spotted scat embryos were treated with 0.003% PTU from 0 to 72 h post fertilization (hpf) to inhibit melanin. Erythrophores were clearly observed during the embryonic stage from 14 to 72 hpf, showing an initial increase (14 to 36 hpf), followed by a gradual decrease (36 to 72 hpf). The number and size of erythrophores at 36 hpf were larger than those at 24 and 72 hpf. At 36 hpf, LC-MS and absorbance spectrophotometry revealed that the carotenoid content was eight times higher than the pteridine content, and ß-carotene and lutein were the main pigments related to red coloration in spotted scat larvae. Compared with their expression in the normal hatching group, rlbp1b, rbp1.1, and rpe65a related to retinol metabolism and soat2 and apoa1 related to steroid hormone biosynthesis and steroid biosynthesis were significantly up-regulated in the PTU group, and rh2 associated with phototransduction was significantly down-regulated. By qRT-PCR, the expression levels of genes involved in carotenoid metabolism (scarb1, plin6, plin2, apoda, bco1, and rep65a), pteridine synthesis (gch2), and chromatophore differentiation (slc2a15b and csf1ra) were significantly higher at 36 hpf than at 24 hpf and 72 hpf, except for bco1. These gene expression profiles were consistent with the developmental changes of erythrophores. These findings provide insights into pigment cell differentiation and gene function in the regulation of red coloration and contribute to selective breeding programs for ornamental aquatic animals.

The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) -related psychostimulant use in the context of concussion risk and symptom recovery. Data were obtained from the National Collegiate Athletic Association Department of Defense Grand Alliance Concussion Assessment, Research, and Education (NCAA-DOD CARE) Consortium from 2014 to 2017. Relative to individuals without diagnosed ADHD (i.e., control), both ADHD diagnosis and the combination of ADHD diagnosis and psychostimulant use were associated with a greater risk of incurring a concussive injury. Following a concussive injury, ADHD diagnosis was associated with longer symptom recovery time relative to the control group. However, individuals with ADHD who use psychostimulants did not take longer to resolve symptoms than controls, suggesting that psychostimulants may have a positive influence on recovery. Regardless of time point, ADHD diagnosis was associated with an elevated number of concussion-related symptoms; however, this effect appears mitigated by having used ADHD-related psychostimulants.

The aim of the present investigation was to provide insight into how postconcussion symptomatology may be altered in individuals exhibiting attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-related behaviors and examine factors that may be responsible for driving such relationships. A total of 99 individuals were assessed during the subacute phase of concussion recovery. Inattentive symptomatology, but not diagnosis of ADHD, was related to greater concussion-symptom severity and overall symptoms endorsed. Cluster and factor analyses highlighted that the relationship between ADHD symptomatology and concussion symptomatology was not a function of overlapping constructs being assessed (i.e., concussion-related symptomatology was not a proxy of ADHD-related symptomatology). These relationships were not mediated by parental observations of impairments in behaviors associated with executive functioning (i.e., executive dysfunction was not driving the greater concussion-related symptomatology associated with ADHD-related symptomatology). These findings highlight the importance of moving beyond categorical frameworks of ADHD to, instead, consider the continuum of underlying behaviors.

Objective: To assess discrepancies between child and parent symptom reports following concussion.Methods: Prospective cohort study involving 61 patients, age 7-21 years, diagnosed with a concussion within the previous 14 days. Children/parents completed the Child SCAT-3 symptom inventory at enrollment and 4 weeks post-injury. A within-subjects t-test was used to compare differences in child/parent response for each of 20 individual symptoms, 4 symptom domains, and total symptom severity. Pearson correlations were used to measure agreement between child/parent responses. A repeated measures analysis of variance assessed the effect of time on child/parent symptom discrepancy.Results: At enrollment, children reported higher symptom severity for 'distracted easily' (adj. p = .015) and 'confused' (adj. p = .015). There was moderate-to-high (r > 0.3) agreement between children and parents for more individual symptoms at enrollment (18/20) than at 4 weeks post-injury (14/20). Age had no effect (p > .05) on the discrepancy between child/parent reports.Conclusions: Although there was moderate-to-strong agreement between child/parent reports of concussion symptoms, discrepancies in individual cognitive symptom reports exist, in both children and adolescents. Therefore, collection of parent scales may provide useful information when tracking cognitive symptoms in adolescent patients, who may under-report or under-recognize cognitive deficits.

Objective: To characterize balance deficits in community-dwelling adults following acute concussion.Design: Cross-sectional observational study.Methods: Individuals with acute concussion (n=100) and healthy controls (n=20) completed the BESS (Balance Error Scoring System) and quiet standing trials on forceplates with the eyes open, closed, or during a cognitive dual task. BESS score and centre-of-pressure root mean square and high-frequency power (0.4-3Hz) were used to characterize group differences. In a secondary analysis, participants were subdivided based on self-reported symptoms of balance problems and dizziness using the SCAT-3 (Sport Concussion Assessment Tool - Third Edition) Symptom Checklist.Results: In comparing individuals with concussion and controls, BESS score (16.0 ± 6.0 vs 12.6 ± 3.8; F(1,116) = 5.814, p = .017) and anteroposterior [F(1.78, 204.2) = 11.93, p < .001] and mediolateral [F(1, 114) = 10.05, p = .002] high-frequency power revealed significant group differences. Dividing individuals based on self-reported symptoms revealed significant differences in mediolateral high frequency power, such that participants reporting balance and dizziness problems as well as those participants not reporting balance or dizziness symptoms following concussion were less stable than controls.Conclusions: Deficits in clinical and posturographic measures of balance occur in community-dwelling adults with concussion. These measures do not align with self-reported balance symptoms. Future research and clinical practice aimed at careful selection of optimized balance assessment is recommended.

We investigated sex-based differences in the presence and severity of aggregated symptom indicators as well as individual concussion symptoms.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional examination of sex differences in symptoms reported by adolescents upon initial concussion evaluation at a concussion clinic. Nine hundred and eighty-six adolescents completed the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT5) symptom checklist. Chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for differences in the presence and severity of symptoms, respectively. Sex differences in global indices of symptom distress were compared.Results: Females endorsed more symptoms (Female: Median (M)=15, Interquartile range (IQR):9-18 vs. Male: M=11, IQR: 6-15, p<0.001) and a greater total symptom score (Female: M=37, IQR:16-45 vs. Male: M=20, IQR:8-39). After False Discovery Rate (FDR) adjustment, females endorsed the presence of 21 of 22 individual symptoms more frequently than males (p≤ 0.039), with greater symptom severity for 20 of 22 individual symptoms (p≤0.036). Moderate ESs were observed for sex-based differences in the total symptom score and the global severity index. Small ESs was observed for differences in most individual symptoms.Conclusions: The greater frequency and severity of concussion symptoms reported by female adolescents highlights the importance of considering sex as a modifier for the management of concussion.

Gaelic football (GF) is a high-impact sport and Sport-Related Concussion (SRC) is an issue within the game. Our aim was to evaluate the characteristics of Potential Concussive Events (PCEs) that occur in the Gaelic Athletic Association National Football League and extrapolate this data to reduce the incidence and severity of SRC. PCEs may or may not lead to a clinical diagnosis of SRC, but represent high-risk events and therefore may be a useful indicator. A video-analysis approach was undertaken to identify PCEs throughout two seasons of play using broadcast footage, and characteristics of each PCE were measured based on previously validated methods. A total of 242 PCEs were identified over 111 matches (2.18 per match, 58.14 per 1000 hours of exposure). PCEs were frequently not anticipated by the player (40.5%, n = 98). The most common impact locations were the mandibular region (33.1%, n = 80) and the temporal region (21.1%, n = 51), and the most frequently observed mechanism was hand/fist to head (27.3%, n = 66). A second-hit was observed in 34 PCEs (14.0%). The findings provide initial guidance for the development of player protection strategies to reduce the incidence and severity of SRC in Gaelic Football.

The Shoreline Response Program (SRP) is an adjustment within an Incident Management System (IMS) intended to improve current practices during planning and preparedness for and from the initial response to an oil spill. An SRP builds on the recognized strengths of an IMS-based organization and of a Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique (SCAT) program that utilizes an integrated and focused approach to streamline and better coordinate the decision and planning processes and the operational implementation activities. An SRP is an extension of the traditional SCAT program but with a broader focus on strategic and tactical planning to minimize the short- and long-term impacts of oil on shorelines, the efforts and costs involved in a shoreline response, and the volumes of waste that would be generated. The objective of this discussion is to identify and address five specific areas for improvement in the shoreline component of an IMS that are associated with the separation of responsibility, streamlining the Environmental Unit (EU), internal communications, Operations support and training. These improvements essentially constitute a paradigm shift and are described in the context of the integration of an SRP into the IMS, the relationship between an SRP and the Environmental Unit, and the enabling of a more formal support approach to the Operations Section by an SRP SCAT-OPS Liaison program. The inclusion of an SRP concept in drills, exercises and preparedness training can directly change the management culture and improve the ability to respond quickly and effectively during the initial response phase. Not implementing an SRP at the very outset of a spill response, when typically the best opportunities exist for the removal of bulk oil, can have significant long-term consequences. Shifting an emphasis of management and physical resources from, often only partially successful, on-water activities to onshore shoreline activities when oil can be picked up more rapidly and effectively can significantly reduce i) the footprint of the response, ii) the duration and scale of the shoreline operation, iii) the exposure of shore zone resources to the oil, and so accelerates ecological and socio-economic recovery. The concept of an SRP as an integrated "single point of contact" for all shoreline-related issues and activities is likely to become more significant as IMS models evolve with potentially fewer people in a more decentralized Command Post and with a greater number of IMS planners, managers, and decision-makers participating from remote locations and/or in a virtual environment.

The ghost bat (Macroderma gigas) is endemic to Australia but is under threat, with scarce information available on the genetic health of remaining populations. Here, we develop molecular assays for microsatellite genotyping and molecular sexing of non-invasive samples as a genetic monitoring tool to identify individuals, measure genetic diversity and investigate spatial and temporal patterns of habitat use by ghost bats. We identified novel microsatellites through high-throughput sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq platform. Of 48 loci tested, six markers were added to five previously developed microsatellite loci. We developed three Y-linked (DDX3Y, Zfy and SRY) and one X-linked markers (Zfx) to enable molecular identification of sex. To assess performance, all 11 microsatellite and four sex-linked markers were amplified in three multiplex reactions in 160 M. gigas faecal samples from the Pilbara region, Western Australia. The combined markers offered a high level of individual discrimination (PIDsibs = 0.00002) and we detected 19 bats in total (11 males, 4 females and 4 sex undetermined). The number of alleles per locus ranged from 5 to 14 and the average observed and expected heterozygosity across loci were Ho = 0.735 (0.58-0.91) and uHe = 0.785 (0.59-0.89) respectively. Our molecular assays allowed identification of individuals from faecal samples at multiple time points and spatial locations and enabled us to elucidate patterns of habitat usage at the study site. This study highlights the value of our molecular assays as a potential capture-mark-recapture technique for population monitoring for this species.

OBJECTIVES: Sport-related concussions are an increasingly recognized health problem. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world although recent studies on concussion incidence are scarce. Here, a nationwide prospective study on concussion incidence, symptom severity, risk factors, gender differences, and return-to-play after concussion was performed in 51 Swedish elite soccer teams during the 2017 season. METHODS: In the 1st and 2nd soccer leagues for men and women, a Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT)-based questionnaire study was performed at preseason (baseline) and from 48 hours to 3 months post-concussion. RESULTS: We followed 959 players (389 women, 570 men) for 25 146 player game hours (9867 hours for women, 15 279 hours for men). Concussion incidence (n = 36 concussions during the season) was 1.19/1000 player game hours (females 1.22/1000 hours, males 1.18/1000 hours; P = .85). Twenty-seven percent of all players (8% of females, 40% of males) continued to play immediately after the concussion. When compared to male players, female players had worse initial symptom severity scores (median and IQR 30 (17-50.5) vs 11 (4-26.25), P = .02) on SCAT and longer return-to-play (P = .02). Risk factors for concussion were baseline symptoms and previous concussion. CONCLUSION: In Swedish elite soccer, the concussion incidence was 1.19/1000 without gender differences. Most players recovered to play within 4 weeks post-injury. Almost one third of players continued to play at time of concussion. Female players had worse initial symptoms and longer return-to-play time than males, and a prolonged recovery beyond 3 months was only observed among female players.

AIM: The Sport Concussion Assessment Tool v3 (SCAT3) and its child version (ChildSCAT3) are composite tools including a symptom scale, a rapid cognitive assessment (standardised assessment of concussion (SAC)) and the modified Balance Error Scoring System (mBESS). It is unclear whether their use for the acute assessment of paediatric concussion in the emergency department (ED) may help predict persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS). We aim to assess the predictive value of the main SCAT3/ChildSCAT3 components for PPCS when applied in the ED. METHODS: A single-site, prospective longitudinal cohort study of children aged 5-18 years assessed within 48 h of their concussion at the ED of a state-wide tertiary paediatric hospital and followed up at the affiliated concussion clinic, between November 2013 and August 2017. PPCS was defined as ≥2 new or worsening symptoms at 1 month post-injury using the Post-Concussive Symptom Inventory. RESULTS: Of the 370 children enrolled, 213 (57.7% <13 years old) provided complete data. Of these, 34.7% had PPCS at 1 month post-injury (38.2% of children <13 years and 30.0% ≥13 years of age, P = 0.272). The adjusted ORs from multiple logistic regression models, for number and severity of symptoms, and for the SAC and mBESS performance in both the ChildSCAT3/SCAT3, were all not significant. The area under the curve of receiver operator characteristic curves for all analysed ChildSCAT3/SCAT3 components was below 0.6. CONCLUSIONS: Although SCAT3 and ChildSCAT3 are recommended tools to assist with concussion diagnosis and monitoring of patient recovery, their use in the ED does not seem to help predict PPCS.

RESUMO

In rugby union concussions are a player welfare concern, particularly in the community game where there is often minimal sideline medical support. New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has three primary goals around the management of concussions in the community game: (1) players with a suspected concussion are removed from the game or training; (2) players are referred into primary care for a diagnosis by a general practitioner(GPs) (doctor in primary care); (3) prior to returning to contact training that they are medically cleared by a doctor. Given their role in the diagnosis and medical clearance of players with a concussion, GPs are a key stakeholder in the concussion management pathway. Thus to ensure that players are safely returning to play, NZR acknowledged the need to better support and engage with GPs. This editorial is an opportunity for NZR to share our experience working collaboratively with GPs in New Zealand to support the diagnosis and medical clearance of players following a rugby-related concussion.

Objective: To investigate somatic and cognitive postconcussive symptoms (PCS) using the symptom evaluation subtest (cSCAT3-SE) of the Child Sports Concussion Assessment Tool 3 (Child SCAT) in tracking PCS up to 2 weeks postinjury.Methods: A total of 96 participants aged 5 to 12 years (Mage = 9.55, SD = 2.20) completed three assessment time points: 48 h postinjury (T0), 2 to 4 days postinjury (T1), and 2 weeks postinjury (T2). The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to analyze differences between cognitive and somatic symptoms over time, while the Friedman test was used to analyze differences within symptom type over time.Results: Cognitive PCS were found to be significantly higher than somatic PCS at all assessment time points and were also found to significantly decline from 4 days onwards postinjury; in contrast, somatic PCS significantly declined as early as 48 hpostinjury.Discussion: Differences between cognitive and somatic PCS emerge as early as a few days postinjury, with cognitive PCS being more persistent than somatic PCS across 2 weeks. Research in symptom-specific interventions may be of benefit in helping young children manage severe PCS as early as 2 weeks postinjury.

Hair is an important component in scat that is commonly used for prey analyses in carnivores. Chemically, hair predominately consists of keratin. The recalcitrant fiber protein is degraded in nature only by a few insects and soil microorganisms. Common proteases such as pepsin do not decompose keratin. Infrared spectroscopy was used to detect chemical differences caused by pretreatment and fate of hairs. Three sample sets were compared: original untreated hair, original milled hair, and hairs extracted from scats of golden jackals (Canis aureus L.). The results revealed that only milling affected the infrared spectral pattern, whereas digestion had no impact. Moreover, hairs from different species (e.g., boar) could be distinguished due to their spectral characteristics. They did not change through the passage of the digestive system.

Objective: This study examined the extent symptoms associated with potential traumatic brain injury (TBI) in intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors overlap with sport-related concussions (SRC). IPV survivor responses on the Brain Injury Severity Assessment (BISA) tool, an IPV-specific questionnaire developed to assess TBI symptoms; and the widely-used Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT5), were compared. Additionally, psychopathological assessments of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety were completed to account for confounding influences. Design: Eighteen women who had experienced IPV were recruited from high-barrier community-based women's shelters. Results: The total number of reported TBI were higher when employing the BISA compared to SCAT5, the strongest symptom-based correlations associated TBI severity was associated with arousal states ("Fatigue", "Anxious", "Drowsiness", "Just Don't Feel Right") or aspects of memory/cognition ("Difficulty Concentrating", "Difficulty Remembering"). Furthermore, TBI severity was also related to the degree of depression and anxiety, but unrelated to PTSD. Conclusions: Taken together, these findings can contribute to the development of enhanced screening tools and supports to help front-line staff identify TBI as a possible contributor to challenges faced by IPV survivors. By this means, women who have experienced IPV will be more likely to break the cycle of abuse and have more positive long-term health outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the clinical utility of the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool-3 (SCAT3) in university athletes with concussion in the absence and presence of baseline data over time. METHODS: Athletes with concussion (n = 23) and uninjured controls (n = 22) were prospectively evaluated at three time-points (baseline, 3-5 days, 3 weeks post-injury) with the SCAT3 components: (1) Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS); (2) Standardized Assessment of Concussion (SAC); and (3) modified Balance Error Scoring System (m-BESS). Sensitivity and specificity were calculated using reliable change indices and normative data from 458 athletes who completed baseline testing. RESULTS: The PCSS total symptom score yielded highest sensitivity (47.4-72.2%) and specificity (78.6-91.7%) 3-5 days post-injury, with the SAC and m-BESS demonstrating little discriminative ability when used more than 3 days post-concussion. The utility of the SCAT3 was comparable when baseline or normative data was used for predicting concussion. CONCLUSION: The SCAT is a clinically useful tool for assessing concussion in the absence or presence of baseline data within the first 3-5 days post-injury. Clinical utility of the SCAT3 was driven by symptoms, which remains consistent in the SCAT5. Future research should explore whether additional cognitive elements in the SCAT5 improve utility beyond this timeframe.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: This study reviewed the available sideline Sport Concussion Assessment Tool-Third Edition (SCAT3) performance of players who were removed from play using the 'concussion interchange rule' (CIR), the available video footage of these incidences, and associated return to play and concussion diagnosis decisions. RESEARCH DESIGN: Descriptive, observational case series. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Data were collected from all NRL players who used the CIR during the 2014 season. MAIN OUTCOMES AND RESULTS: Complete SCAT3 and video analysis data were available for 38 (23%) of 167 uses of the concussion interchange rule, of which 20 (52.6%) players were medically diagnosed with concussion. Those with video evidence of unresponsiveness performed more poorly on the modified Balance Error Scoring System (M-BESS; p = .04; Cohen's d = .69) and reported greater symptoms (p = .03; d = .51). Similarly, players with a vacant stare reported greater symptoms (p = .05; d = .78). Those who demonstrated three signs (unresponsiveness, vacant stare and gait ataxia) performed more poorly on the M-BESS (p = .03; d = 1.4) and reported greater symptoms than those with no observable signs (p = .03; d = 1.4). CONCLUSIONS: The SCAT3 is sensitive to the acute effects of concussion in professional athletes; however, a minority of injured athletes might go undetected by this test.
