RESUMO

The quick proliferation of pandemic diseases has been imposing many concerns on the international health infrastructure. To combat pandemic diseases in smart cities, Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) technology, based on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with the Internet of Things (IoT), is commonly used to promote efficient control and diagnosis during the outbreak, thereby minimizing possible losses. However, the presence of multi-source institutional data remains one of the major challenges hindering the practical usage of AIoT solutions for pandemic disease diagnosis. This paper presents a novel framework that utilizes multi-site data fusion to boost the accurateness of pandemic disease diagnosis. In particular, we focus on a case study of COVID-19 lesion segmentation, a crucial task for understanding disease progression and optimizing treatment strategies. In this study, we propose a novel multi-decoder segmentation network for efficient segmentation of infections from cross-domain CT scans in smart cities. The multi-decoder segmentation network leverages data from heterogeneous domains and utilizes strong learning representations to accurately segment infections. Performance evaluation of the multi-decoder segmentation network was conducted on three publicly accessible datasets, demonstrating robust results with an average dice score of 89.9% and an average surface dice of 86.87%. To address scalability and latency issues associated with centralized cloud systems, fog computing (FC) emerges as a viable solution. FC brings resources closer to the operator, offering low latency and energy-efficient data management and processing. In this context, we propose a unique FC technique called PANDFOG to deploy the multi-decoder segmentation network on edge nodes for practical and clinical applications of automated COVID-19 pneumonia analysis. The results of this study highlight the efficacy of the multi-decoder segmentation network in accurately segmenting infections from cross-domain CT scans. Moreover, the proposed PANDFOG system demonstrates the practical deployment of the multi-decoder segmentation network on edge nodes, providing real-time access to COVID-19 segmentation findings for improved patient monitoring and clinical decision-making.

RESUMO

Three paradigms to deal with urban water issues are compared. The analysis focuses on their definition and objectives, the role of different stakeholders, the issues they deal with, and the possible solutions suggested. The paradigms differ in scope (from the narrow focus of the sponge city paradigm to the broad goals of eco-city paradigm) and in terms of the governance structures used to coordinate different stakeholders. The smart and sponge paradigms mainly use existing government structures. In the eco-cities approach, the citizens want to be involved through newly created governance structures. Smart and eco-city initiatives emphasize the involvement of stakeholders, while in the sponge cities approach, the initiative is often taken by the local government. Finally, in terms of expected solutions, the paradigms want to create eco- or healthy cities or improve water management to create a more healthy urban environment. After identifying the issue, alternative water-related technologies are available, like generating energy from wastewater or separating grey and brown water. Cities require different governance structures, and managing information flows in an integrated way to solve water and other issues. The experience in Europe, China, and India may help other cities choose the right paradigm.

RESUMO

The emergence of 6G communication technologies brings both opportunities and challenges for the Internet of Things (IoT) in smart cities. In this paper, we introduce an advanced network slicing framework designed to meet the complex demands of 6G smart cities' IoT deployments. The framework development follows a detailed methodology that encompasses requirement analysis, metric formulation, constraint specification, objective setting, mathematical modeling, configuration optimization, performance evaluation, parameter tuning, and validation of the final design. Our evaluations demonstrate the framework's high efficiency, evidenced by low round-trip time (RTT), minimal packet loss, increased availability, and enhanced throughput. Notably, the framework scales effectively, managing multiple connections simultaneously without compromising resource efficiency. Enhanced security is achieved through robust features such as 256-bit encryption and a high rate of authentication success. The discussion elaborates on these findings, underscoring the framework's impressive performance, scalability, and security capabilities.

This paper describes a novel architecture that aims to create a template for the implementation of an IT platform, supporting the deployment and integration of the different digital twin subsystems that compose a complex urban intelligence system. In more detail, the proposed Smart City IT architecture has the following main purposes: (i) facilitating the deployment of the subsystems in a cloud environment; (ii) effectively storing, integrating, managing, and sharing the huge amount of heterogeneous data acquired and produced by each subsystem, using a data lake; (iii) supporting data exchange and sharing; (iv) managing and executing workflows, to automatically coordinate and run processes; and (v) to provide and visualize the required information. A prototype of the proposed IT solution was implemented leveraging open-source frameworks and technologies, to test its functionalities and performance. The results of the tests performed in real-world settings confirmed that the proposed architecture could efficiently and easily support the deployment and integration of heterogeneous subsystems, allowing them to share and integrate their data and to select, extract, and visualize the information required by a user, as well as promoting the integration with other external systems, and defining and executing workflows to orchestrate the various subsystems involved in complex analyses and processes.

RESUMO

The main aim of this paper is to present an innovative approach to addressing the challenges of smart mobility exploiting digital twins within the METACITIES initiative. We have worked on this issue due to the increasing complexity of urban transportation systems, coupled with the urgent need to improve efficiency, safety, and sustainability in cities. The work presented in this paper is part of the project METACITIES, an Excellence Hub that spans a large geographical area, that of Southeastern Europe. The approach of the Greek innovation ecosystem of METACITIES involves leveraging digital twin technology to create intelligent replicas of urban mobility environments, enabling real-time monitoring, analysis, and decision making. Through use cases such as "Smart Parking", "Environmental Behavior Analysis on Traffic Incidents", and "Emergency Management", we demonstrate how digital twins can optimize traffic flow, mitigate environmental impact, and enhance emergency response; these use cases will be tested on a small scale, before deciding on implementation at a larger and more expensive scale. The final outcome is the METACITIES Architecture for smart mobility, which will be part of an Open Digital Twin Framework capable of evolving a smart city into a metacity.

The vast amount of information stemming from the deployment of the Internet of Things and open data portals is poised to provide significant benefits for both the private and public sectors, such as the development of value-added services or an increase in the efficiency of public services. This is further enhanced due to the potential of semantic information models such as NGSI-LD, which enable the enrichment and linkage of semantic data, strengthened by the contextual information present by definition. In this scenario, advanced data processing techniques need to be defined and developed for the processing of harmonised datasets and data streams. Our work is based on a structured approach that leverages the principles of linked-data modelling and semantics, as well as a data enrichment toolchain framework developed around NGSI-LD. Within this framework, we reveal the potential for enrichment and linkage techniques to reshape how data are exploited in smart cities, with a particular focus on citizen-centred initiatives. Moreover, we showcase the effectiveness of these data processing techniques through specific examples of entity transformations. The findings, which focus on improving data comprehension and bolstering smart city advancements, set the stage for the future exploration and refinement of the symbiosis between semantic data and smart city ecosystems.

The reliability and scalability of Linear Wireless Sensor Networks (LWSNs) are limited by the high packet loss probabilities (PLP) experienced by the packets generated at nodes far from the sink node. This is an important limitation in Smart City applications, where timely data collection is critical for decision making. Unfortunately, previous works have not addressed this problem and have only focused on improving the network's overall performance. In this work, we propose a Distance-Based Queuing (DBQ) scheme that can be incorporated into MAC protocols for LWSNs to improve reliability and scalability without requiring extra local processing or additional signaling at the nodes. The DBQ scheme prioritizes the transmission of relay packets based on their hop distance to the sink node, ensuring that all packets experience the same PLP. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposal, we developed an analytical model and conducted extensive discrete-event simulations. Our numerical results demonstrate that the DBQ scheme significantly improves the reliability and scalability of the network by achieving the same average PLP and throughput for all nodes, regardless of traffic intensities and network sizes.

This study proposes wide-band frequency selective surfaces (FSS) with polarization-independent characteristics that are tailored for IoT applications. The design consists of two different layers with band-stop characteristics that target key frequency bands in sub-6 GHz: 3.7 GHz (n77) and 4.5 GHz (n79), offering a 1.39 GHz bandwidth spanning from 3.61 GHz to 5.0 GHz. This study also presents a double-layer structure with a WB property with a fractional bandwidth of 32%. Simulations have been conducted to observe variations in insertion loss across incident and polarization angles ranging from 0 to 60 degrees for both TE and TM modes in the suggested FSS structures. These simulations demonstrate the design's polarization independence. Transparent polyvinyl chloride with a dielectric constant of 2.77 and a thickness of 1.48 mm has been utilized as the substrate material. The optical transmittance is calculated to be 96.7% for Layer 1, 95.7% for Layer 2, and 92.4% for the double-layer structure, and these calculated optical transmittance values were found to be higher compared to the studies in the literature. The proposed design is well-suited for sub-6 GHz IoT applications due to their high transparency, cost-effectiveness, robust high-performance capabilities in suppression, and polarization-independent features. The results of 3D full-wave simulations were compared with measurement and the equivalent circuit model outcomes, and a good agreement between the results was observed.

Smart power grids suffer from electricity theft cyber-attacks, where malicious consumers compromise their smart meters (SMs) to downscale the reported electricity consumption readings. This problem costs electric utility companies worldwide considerable financial burdens and threatens power grid stability. Therefore, several machine learning (ML)-based solutions have been proposed to detect electricity theft; however, they have limitations. First, most existing works employ supervised learning that requires the availability of labeled datasets of benign and malicious electricity usage samples. Unfortunately, this approach is not practical due to the scarcity of real malicious electricity usage samples. Moreover, training a supervised detector on specific cyberattack scenarios results in a robust detector against those attacks, but it might fail to detect new attack scenarios. Second, although a few works investigated anomaly detectors for electricity theft, none of the existing works addressed consumers' privacy. To address these limitations, in this paper, we propose a comprehensive federated learning (FL)-based deep anomaly detection framework tailored for practical, reliable, and privacy-preserving energy theft detection. In our proposed framework, consumers train local deep autoencoder-based detectors on their private electricity usage data and only share their trained detectors' parameters with an EUC aggregation server to iteratively build a global anomaly detector. Our extensive experimental results not only demonstrate the superior performance of our anomaly detector compared to the supervised detectors but also the capability of our proposed FL-based anomaly detector to accurately detect zero-day attacks of electricity theft while preserving consumers' privacy.

The location-based smartphone service brings new development opportunities for seamless indoor/outdoor positioning. However, in complex scenarios such as cities, tunnels, overpasses, forests, etc., using only GNSS on smartphones cannot provide stable and reliable positioning results. Usually, additional sensors are needed to assist GNSS. This paper investigates the GNSS positioning algorithm assisted by pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) in complex scenarios. First, we introduce a step detection algorithm based on the peak-valley of acceleration modulus, and the Weinberg model and the Mahony algorithm in PDR are used to estimate step length and heading. On this basis, we evaluated the performance of GNSS/PDR fusion positioning in an open scenario, a semiopen scenario, and a blocked scenario, respectively. Finally, we develop a GNSS/PDR real-time positioning software, called China University of Mining and Technology-POSitioning (CUMT-POS) version 1.0, on the Android 10 platform. By comparing GNSS solutions, PDR solutions, GNSS/PDR solutions, and real-time kinematic (RTK) solutions, we verify the potential auxiliary ability of PDR for GNSS positioning in complex environments, proving that multisource sensor fusion positioning significantly improves reliability and stability. Our research can help the realization of urban informatization and smart cities.

In this paper, we explore the use of visible light positioning (VLP) technology in vehicles in intelligent transportation systems (ITS), highlighting its potential for maintaining effective line of sight (LOS) and providing high-accuracy positioning between vehicles. The proposed system (V2V-VLP) is based on a position-sensitive detector (PSD) and exploiting car taillights to determine the position and inter-vehicular distance by angle of arrival (AoA) measurements. The integration of the PSD sensor in vehicles promises exceptional positioning accuracy, opening new prospects for navigation and driving safety. The results revealed that the proposed system enables precise measurement of position and distance between vehicles, including lateral distance. We evaluated the impact of different focal lengths on the system performance, achieving cm-level accuracy for distances up to 35 m, with an optimum focal length of 25 mm, and under low signal-to-noise conditions, which meets the standards required for safe and reliable V2V applications. Several experimental tests were carried out to validate the results of the simulations.

The rapid advancement toward smart cities has accelerated the adoption of various Internet of Things (IoT) devices for underground applications, including agriculture, which aims to enhance sustainability by reducing the use of vital resources such as water and maximizing production. On-farm IoT devices with above-ground wireless nodes are vulnerable to damage and data loss due to heavy machinery movement, animal grazing, and pests. To mitigate these risks, wireless Underground Sensor Networks (WUSNs) are proposed, where devices are buried underground. However, implementing WUSNs faces challenges due to soil heterogeneity and the need for low-power, small-size, and long-range communication technology. While existing radio frequency (RF)-based solutions are impeded by substantial signal attenuation and low coverage, acoustic wave-based WUSNs have the potential to overcome these impediments. This paper is the first attempt to review acoustic propagation models to discern a suitable model for the advancement of acoustic WUSNs tailored to the agricultural context. Our findings indicate the Kelvin-Voigt model as a suitable framework for estimating signal attenuation, which has been verified through alignment with documented outcomes from experimental studies conducted in agricultural settings. By leveraging data from various soil types, this research underscores the feasibility of acoustic signal-based WUSNs.

Computer Vision (CV) has become increasingly important for Single-Board Computers (SBCs) due to their widespread deployment in addressing real-world problems. Specifically, in the context of smart cities, there is an emerging trend of developing end-to-end video analytics solutions designed to address urban challenges such as traffic management, disaster response, and waste management. However, deploying CV solutions on SBCs presents several pressing challenges (e.g., limited computation power, inefficient energy management, and real-time processing needs) hindering their use at scale. Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) and software-level developments have emerged recently in addressing these challenges to enable the elevated performance of SBCs; however, it is still an active area of research. There is a gap in the literature for a comprehensive review of such recent and rapidly evolving advancements on both software and hardware fronts. The presented review provides a detailed overview of the existing GPU-accelerated edge-computing SBCs and software advancements including algorithm optimization techniques, packages, development frameworks, and hardware deployment specific packages. This review provides a subjective comparative analysis based on critical factors to help applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) researchers in demonstrating the existing state of the art and selecting the best suited combinations for their specific use-case. At the end, the paper also discusses potential limitations of the existing SBCs and highlights the future research directions in this domain.

This study aims to investigate the differences in intra-urban catchments with different characteristics through real-time wastewater monitoring. Monitoring stations were installed in three neighbourhoods of Barcelona to measure flow, total chemical oxygen demand (COD), pH, conductivity, temperature, and bisulfide (HS-) for 1 year. Typical wastewater profiles were obtained for weekdays, weekends, and holidays in the summer and winter seasons. The results reveal differences in waking up times and evening routines, commuting behaviour during weekends and holidays, and water consumption. The pollutant profiles contribute to a better understanding of pollution generation in households and catchment activities. Flows and COD correlate well at all stations, but there are differences in conductivity and HS- at the station level. The article concludes by discussing the operational experience of the monitoring stations.

The EU Mission on Climate Neutral and Smart Cities is an ambitious initiative aiming to involve a wide range of stakeholders and deliver 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. We analysed the information submitted in the expressions of interest by 362 candidate cities. The majority of the cities' strategies for climate neutrality include urban transport as a main sector and combine the introduction of new technologies with the promotion of public transport and active mobility. We combined the information from the EU Mission candidate cities with data from the CORDIS and TRIMIS databases, and applied a clustering algorithm to measure proximity to foci of H2020 funding. Our results suggest that preparedness for the EU Mission is correlated with research and innovation activities on transport and mobility. Horizon 2020 activities specific to transport and mobility significantly increased the likelihood of a city to be a candidate. Among the various transport technology research pathways, smart mobility appears to have a major role in the development of solutions for climate neutrality.

As the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases nears 27 million, there is a rush to answer (what next) and a rush to act (to solve the immediate problems of COVID-19). This paper discusses, with a specific focus on urban areas in the global South, what is missing to date from this response. That includes an identification of things that there are too much of, things that are not being done at all, and things that are unbalanced. There has been an enormous upsurge of academic research papers and opinions on COVID-19. "Technological" and "scientific" solutions tend to overshadow other approaches, even if people know that "social is important". Based on our analysis to date, our primary concern is that there is too little understanding about the importance of building dialogue, exploring collaboration and co-producing solutions. There is too little understanding as to why social and cultural responses are important, and how the recognition that they are important can be actioned.

Traffic congestion is one of the major challenges faced by daily commuters in smart cities. An autonomous transportation system with a 5 G-based Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) communication system is the solution to meet the traffic challenges faced in smart cities. Vehicular networks provide wireless connectivity to enable a large number of connected vehicle applications. Vehicular networks allow vehicles to share their emergency and infotainment traffic by following vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) or by using vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication. The infrastructure of vehicular networks mainly comprises multiple Road Side Units (RSUs). Fog computing nodes are placed adjacent to these RSUs to provide quick access to vehicles. For infotainment traffic, vehicles intend to download their required content from the content provider. Caching the same contents from the nearby fog computing node significantly reduces delay with improved quality of service. As there are millions of contents with varying sizes, caching all demanded contents on these fog nodes is not possible due to their limited caching capacity. In this work, we propose an improved content caching scheme for fog nodes to satisfy vehicles and content providers for fair content placement. The proposed algorithm is based on a modified Gale-Shapley technique that considers factors such as content popularity, vehicle connectivity, and quality of the communication channel to optimize the content caching process. Simulation results show that the proposed technique caches a higher number of popular contents with lower downloading time.

Time synchronization among smart city nodes is critical for proper functioning and coordinating various smart city systems and applications. It ensures that different devices and systems in the smart city network are synchronized and all the data generated by these devices is consistent and accurate. Synchronization methods in smart cities use multiple timestamp exchanges for time skew correction. The Skew Integrated Timestamp (SIT) proposed here uses a timestamp, which has time skew calculated from the physical layer and uses just one timestamp to synchronize. The result from the experiment suggests that SIT can be used in place of multiple timestamp exchanges, which saves computational resources and energy.

This trend culminates in the emergence of smart cities. This article delves into the current state of research surrounding data-driven, environmentally conscious smart cities, aiming to assess the extent to which these two concepts are currently being integrated and identify potential gaps in this field. Through a strong emphasis on evidence-based research, the study underscores the potential of big data technologies to offer innovative approaches for monitoring, comprehending, evaluating, and ultimately managing sustainable urban development. It further highlights the crucial role of data-driven advancements in formulating strategic development policies and operational management procedures, ensuring that environmentally conscious cities can continue to contribute to sustainability goals even amidst rapid urbanization.

Real-time data gathering, analysis, and reaction are made possible by this information and communication technology system. Data storage is also made possible by it. This is a good move since it enhances the administration and operation services essential to any city's efficient operation. The idea behind "smart cities" is that information and communication technology (ICTs) need to be included in a city's routine activities in order to gather, analyze, and store enormous amounts of data in real-time. This is helpful since it makes managing and governing urban areas easier. The "drone" or "uncrewed aerial vehicle" (UAV), which can carry out activities that ordinarily call for a human driver, serves as an example of this. UAVs could be used to integrate geospatial data, manage traffic, keep an eye on objects, and help in an emergency as part of a smart urban fabric. This study looks at the benefits and drawbacks of deploying UAVs in the conception, development, and management of smart cities. This article describes the importance and advantages of deploying UAVs in designing, developing, and maintaining in smart cities. This article overviews UAV uses types, applications, and challenges. Furthermore, we presented blockchain approaches for addressing the given problems for UAVs in smart research topics and recommendations for improving the security and privacy of UAVs in smart cities. Furthermore, we presented Blockchain approaches for addressing the given problems for UAVs in smart cities. Researcher and graduate students are audience of our article.
