RESUMO

Bridges are designed and built to be safe against failure and perform satisfactorily over their service life. Bridge structural health monitoring (BSHM) systems are therefore essential to ensure the safety and serviceability of such critical transportation infrastructure. Identification of structural damage at the earliest time possible is a major goal of BSHM processes. Among many developed damage identification techniques (DITs), vibration-based techniques have shown great potential to be implemented in BSHM systems. In a vibration-based DIT, the response of a bridge is measured and analyzed in either time or space domain for the purpose of detecting damage-induced changes in the extracted dynamic properties of the bridge. This approach usually requires a comparison between two structural states of the bridge-the current state and a reference (intact/undamaged) state. In most in-situ cases, however, data on the bridge structural response in the reference state are not available. Therefore, researchers have been recently working on the development of DITs that eliminate the need for a prior knowledge of the reference state. This paper thoroughly explains why and how the reference state can be excluded from the damage identification process. It then reviews the state-of-the-art reference-free vibration-based DITs and summarizes their merits and shortcomings to give guidance on their applicability to BSHM systems. Finally, some recommendations are given for further research.

Long-span bridges are susceptible to damage, aging, and deformation in harsh environments for a long time. Therefore, structural health monitoring (SHM) systems need to be used for reasonable monitoring and maintenance. Among various indicators, bridge displacement is a crucial parameter reflecting the bridge's health condition. Due to the simultaneous bearing of multiple environmental loads on suspension bridges, determining the impact of different loads on displacement is beneficial for the better understanding of the health conditions of the bridges. Considering the fact that extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) has higher prediction performance and robustness, the authors of this paper have developed a data-driven approach based on the XGBoost model to quantify the impact between different environmental loads and the displacement of a suspension bridge. Simultaneously, this study combined wavelet threshold (WT) denoising and the variational mode decomposition (VMD) method to conduct a modal decomposition of three-dimensional (3D) displacement, further investigating the interrelationships between different loads and bridge displacements. This model links wind speed, temperature, air pressure, and humidity with the 3D displacement response of the span using the bridge monitoring data provided by the GNSS and Earth Observation for Structural Health Monitoring (GeoSHM) system of the Forth Road Bridge (FRB) in the United Kingdom (UK), thus eliminating the temperature time-lag effect on displacement data. The effects of the different loads on the displacement are quantified individually with partial dependence plots (PDPs). Employing testing, it was found that the XGBoost model has a high predictive effect on the target variable of displacement. The analysis of quantification and correlation reveals that lateral displacement is primarily affected by same-direction wind, showing a clear positive correlation, and vertical displacement is mainly influenced by temperature and exhibits a negative correlation. Longitudinal displacement is jointly influenced by various environmental loads, showing a positive correlation with atmospheric pressure, temperature, and vertical wind and a negative correlation with longitudinal wind, lateral wind, and humidity. The results can guide bridge structural health monitoring in extreme weather to avoid accidents.

Most finite element model updating (FEMU) studies on bridges are acceleration-based due to their lower cost and ease of use compared to strain- or displacement-based methods, which entail costly experiments and traffic disruptions. This leads to a scarcity of comprehensive studies incorporating strain measurements. This study employed the strain- and acceleration-based FEMU analyses performed on a more than 50-year-old multi-span concrete highway viaduct. Mid-span strains under heavy vehicles were considered for the strain-based FEMU, and frequencies and mode shapes for the acceleration-based FEMU. The analyses were performed separately for up to three variables, representing Young's modulus adjustment factors for different groups of structural elements. FEMU studies considered residual minimisation and the error-domain model falsification (EDMF) methodology. The residual minimisation utilised four different single-objective optimisations focusing on strains, frequencies, and mode shapes. Strain- and frequency-based FEMU analyses resulted in an approximately 20% increase in the overall superstructure's design stiffness. This study shows the benefits of the intuitive EDMF over residual minimisation for FEMU, where information gained from the strain data, in addition to the acceleration data, manifests more sensible updated variables. EDMF finally resulted in a 25-50% overestimated design stiffness of internal main girders.

The South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China is an extensive inter-basin water transfer project, for which ensuring the safe operation and maintenance of infrastructure poses a fundamental challenge. In this context, structural health monitoring is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of hydraulic infrastructure. Currently, most health monitoring systems for hydraulic infrastructure rely on commercial software or algorithms that only run on desktop computers. This study developed for the first time a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) model specifically for early detection of structural damage in water supply canals and deployed it as a tiny machine learning (TinyML) application on a low-power microcontroller unit (MCU). The model uses damage images of the supply canals that we collected as input and the damage types as output. With data augmentation techniques to enhance the training dataset, the deployed model is only 7.57 KB in size and demonstrates an accuracy of 94.17 ± 1.67% and a precision of 94.47 ± 1.46%, outperforming other commonly used CNN models in terms of performance and energy efficiency. Moreover, each inference consumes only 5610.18 µJ of energy, allowing a standard 225 mAh button cell to run continuously for nearly 11 years and perform approximately 4,945,055 inferences. This research not only confirms the feasibility of deploying real-time supply canal surface condition monitoring on low-power, resource-constrained devices but also provides practical technical solutions for improving infrastructure security.

Real-time structural health monitoring (SHM) and accurate diagnosis of imminent damage are critical to ensure the structural safety of conventional reinforced concrete (RC) and fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) structures. Implementations of a piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) sensor network in the critical areas of structural members can identify the damage level. This study uses a recently developed PZT-enabled Electro-Mechanical Impedance (EMI)-based, real-time, wireless, and portable SHM and damage detection system in prismatic specimens subjected to flexural repeated loading plain concrete (PC) and FRC. Furthermore, this research examined the efficacy of the proposed SHM methodology for FRC cracking identification of the specimens at various loading levels with different sensor layouts. Additionally, damage quantification using values of statistical damage indices is included. For this reason, the well-known conventional static metric of the Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) and the Mean Absolute Percentage Deviation (MAPD) were used and compared. This paper addresses a reliable monitoring experimental methodology in FRC to diagnose damage and predict the forthcoming flexural failure at early damage stages, such as at the onset of cracking. Test results indicated that damage assessment is successfully achieved using RMSD and MAPD indices of a strategically placed network of PZT sensors. Furthermore, the Upper Control Limit (UCL) index was adopted as a threshold for further sifting the scalar damage indices. Additionally, the proposed PZT-enable SHM method for prompt damage level is first established, providing the relationship between the voltage frequency response of the 32 PZT sensors and the crack propagation of the FRC prisms due to the step-by-step increased imposed load. In conclusion, damage diagnosis through continuous monitoring of PZTs responses of FRC due to flexural loading is a quantitative, reliable, and promising application.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is critical for ensuring the safety of infrastructure such as bridges. This article presents a digital twin solution for the SHM of railway bridges using low-cost wireless accelerometers and machine learning (ML). The system architecture combines on-premises edge computing and cloud analytics to enable efficient real-time monitoring and complete storage of relevant time-history datasets. After train crossings, the accelerometers stream raw vibration data, which are processed in the frequency domain and analyzed using machine learning to detect anomalies that indicate potential structural issues. The digital twin approach is demonstrated on an in-service railway bridge for which vibration data were collected over two years under normal operating conditions. By learning allowable ranges for vibration patterns, the digital twin model identifies abnormal spectral peaks that indicate potential changes in structural integrity. The long-term pilot proves that this affordable SHM system can provide automated and real-time warnings of bridge damage and also supports the use of in-house-designed sensors with lower cost and edge computing capabilities such as those used in the demonstration. The successful on-premises-cloud hybrid implementation provides a cost effective and scalable model for expanding monitoring to thousands of railway bridges, democratizing SHM to improve safety by avoiding catastrophic failures.

Effective damage identification is paramount to evaluating safety conditions and preventing catastrophic failures of concrete structures. Although various methods have been introduced in the literature, developing robust and reliable structural health monitoring (SHM) procedures remains an open research challenge. This study proposes a new approach utilizing a 1-D convolution neural network to identify the formation of cracks from the raw electromechanical impedance (EMI) signature of externally bonded piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducers. Externally bonded PZT transducers were used to determine the EMI signature of fiber-reinforced concrete specimens subjected to monotonous and repeatable compression loading. A leave-one-specimen-out cross-validation scenario was adopted for the proposed SHM approach for a stricter and more realistic validation procedure. The experimental study and the obtained results clearly demonstrate the capacity of the introduced approach to provide autonomous and reliable damage identification in a PZT-enabled SHM system, with a mean accuracy of 95.24% and a standard deviation of 5.64%.

This study investigates the manufacturing, testing, and analysis of ultra-thick laminated polymer matrix composite (PMC) beams with the aim of developing high-performance PMC leaf springs for automotive applications. An innovative aspect of this study is the integration of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors and thermocouples (TCs) to monitor residual strain and exothermic reactions in composite structures during curing and post-curing manufacturing cycles. Additionally, the Calibration Coefficients (CCs) are calculated using Strain Gauge measurement results under static three-point bending tests. A major part of the study focuses on developing a properly correlated Finite Element (FE) model with large deflection (LD) effects using geometrical nonlinear analysis (GNA) to understand the deformation behavior of ultra thick composite beam (ComBeam) samples, advancing the understanding of large deformation behavior and filling critical research gaps in composite materials. This model will help assess the internal strain distribution, which is verified by correlating data from FBG sensors, Strain Gauges (SGs), and FE analysis. In addition, this research focuses on the application of FBG sensors in structural health monitoring (SHM) in fatigue tests under three-point bending with the support of load-deflection sensors: a new approach for composites at this scale. This study revealed that the fatigue performance of ComBeam samples drastically decreased with increasing displacement ranges, even at the same maximum level, underscoring the potential of FBG sensors to enhance SHM capabilities linked to smart maintenance.

Internal corrosion is a major concern in ensuring the safety of transmission and gathering pipelines in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). It usually requires numerous sensors deployed inside the piping system to comprehensively cover the locations with high corrosion rates. This study presents a hybrid modeling strategy using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) to improve the sensor placement scheme for corrosion detection and monitoring. The essence of the proposed strategy harnesses the well-validated physical modeling capability of the CFD to simulate the oil-water two-phase flow and the stochastic searching ability of the GA to explore better solutions on a global level. The CFD-based corrosion rate prediction was validated through experimental results and further used to form the initial population for GA optimization. Importantly, fitness was defined by considering both sensing effectiveness and cost of sensor coverage. The hybrid modeling strategy was implemented through case studies, where three typical pipe fittings were used to demonstrate the applicability of the sensor layout design for corrosion detection in pipelines. The GA optimization results show high accuracy for sensor placement inside the pipelines. The best fitness of the U-shaped, upward-inclined, and downward-inclined pipes were 0.9415, 0.9064, and 0.9183, respectively. Upon this, the hybrid modeling strategy can provide a promising tool for the pipeline industry to design the practical placement.

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthening systems have been considered an effective technique to retrofit concrete structures, and their use nowadays is more and more extensive. Externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) and near-surface mounted (NSM) technologies are the two most widely recognized and applied FRP strengthening methods for enhancing structural performance worldwide. However, one of the main disadvantages of both approaches is a possible brittle failure mode provided by a sudden debonding of the FRP. Therefore, methodologies able to monitor the long-term efficiency of this kind of strengthening constitute a challenge to be overcome. In this work, two reinforced concrete (RC) specimens strengthened with FRP and subjected to increasing load tests were monitored. One specimen was strengthened using the EBR method, while for the other, the NSM technique was used. The multiple cracks emanating in both specimens in the static tests, as possible origins of a future debonding failure, were monitored using a piezoelectric (PZT)-transducer-based electromechanical impedance (EMI) technique and a digital image correlation (DIC) system. Clustering approaches based on impedance measurements of the healthy and damaged states of the specimens allowed us to suspect the occurrence of cracks and their growth. The strain profiles captured in the images of the DIC system allowed us to depict surface hair-line cracks and their propagation. The combined implementation of the two techniques to look for correlations during incremental bending tests was addressed in this study as a means of improving the prediction of early cracks and potentially anticipating the complete failure of the strengthened specimens.

Smart flexible materials with piezoresistive property are increasingly used in the field of sensors. When embedded in structures, they would allow for in situ structural health monitoring and damage assessment of impact loading, such as crash, bird strikes and ballistic impacts; however, this could not be achieved without a deep characterization of the relation between piezoresistivity and mechanical behavior. The aim of this paper is to study the potential use of the piezoresistivity effect of a conductive foam made of a flexible polyurethane matrix filled with activated carbon for integrated structural health monitoring (SHM) and low-energy impact detection. To do so, polyurethane foam filled with activated carbon, namely PUF-AC, is tested under quasi-static compressions and under a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) with in situ measurements of its electrical resistance. A new relation is proposed for describing the evolution of the resistivity versus strain rate showing that a link exists between electrical sensitivity and viscoelasticity. In addition, a first demonstrative experiment of feasibility of an SHM application using piezoresistive foam embedded in a composite sandwich structure is realized by a low-energy impact (2 J) test.

Nowadays, nonlinear vibration methods are increasingly used for the detection of damage mechanisms in polymer matrix composite (PMC) materials, which are anisotropic and heterogeneous. The originality of this study was the use of two nonlinear vibration methods to detect different types of damage within PMC through an in situ embedded polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric sensor. The two used methods are nonlinear resonance (NLR) and single frequency excitation (SFE). They were first tested on damage introduced during the manufacturing of the smart PMC plates, and second, on the damage that occurred after the manufacturing. The results show that both techniques are interesting, and probably a combination of them will be the best choice for SHM purposes. During the experimentation, an accelerometer was used, in order to validate the effectiveness of the integrated PVDF sensor.

Due to the increasing importance of the continuous monitoring of Civil Structures, this research aims to take advantage of new solutions of measurement systems and sensors in the Structural Health Monitoring of bridges, using the reinforced concrete arch Arrábida Bridge as a case study. With the support of customized sensors, this work starts by performing preliminary ambient vibration tests on Arrábida Bridge, aiming at the identification of the natural frequencies and respective vibration modes of the deck. Then, the measurement campaigns carried over time are described, which involved different types of customized sensors, namely, accelerometers, temperature sensors and displacement sensors. Based on the signals collected by these devices, some preliminary analyses were performed. The results show that the temperature measured at the deck sections presents different amplitudes and phase shifts when compared to the temperature measured at the arch sections. Moreover, using the temperature measurements, it is possible to estimate with good accuracy the displacements in the expansion joints of the bridge. It was also observed that the displacements in these joints, although being conditioned by the temperature effects, are also marked by a dynamic component arising from the traffic loads over the deck. The observation of this phenomenon is an innovative aspect found in this investigation, which can be used in the future to characterize the traffic loads on the structure.

With the increase in low-power wireless communication solutions, the deployment of Wireless Sensor Networks is becoming usual, especially to implement Cyber-Physical Systems. These latter can be used for Structural Health Monitoring applications in critical environments. To ensure a long-term deployment, battery-free and energy-autonomous wireless sensors are designed and can be powered by ambient energy harvesting or Wireless Power Transfer. Because of the criticality of the applications and the limited resources of the nodes, the security is generally relegated to the background, which leads to vulnerabilities in the entire system. In this paper, a security analysis based on an example: the implementation of a communicating reinforced concrete using a network of battery-free nodes; is presented. First, the employed wireless communication protocols are presented in regard of their native security features, main vulnerabilities, and most usual attacks. Then, the security analysis is carried out for the targeted implementation, especially by defining the main hypothesis of the attack and its consequences. Finally, solutions to secure the data and the network are compared. From a global point-of-view, this security analysis must be initiated from the project definition and must be continued throughout the deployment to allow the use of adapted, updatable and upgradable solutions.

Finite element (FE) model updating of bridges is based on the measured modal parameters and less frequently on the measured structural response under a known load. Until recently, the FE model updating did not consider strain measurements from sensors installed for weighing vehicles with bridge weigh-in-motion (B-WIM) systems. A 50-year-old multi-span concrete highway viaduct, renovated between 2017 and 2019, was equipped with continuous monitoring system with over 200 sensors, and a B-WIM system. In the most heavily instrumented span, the maximum measured longitudinal strains induced by the full-speed calibration vehicle passages were compared with the modelled strains. Based on the sensitivity study results, three variables that affected its overall stiffness were updated: Young's modulus adjustment factor of all structural elements, and two anchorage reduction factors that considered the interaction between the superstructure and non-structural elements. The analysis confirmed the importance of the initial manual FE model updating to correctly reflect the non-structural elements during the automatic nonlinear optimisation. It also demonstrated a successful use of pseudo-static B-WIM loading data during the model updating process and the potential to extend the proposed approach to using random B-WIM-weighed vehicles for FE model updating and long-term monitoring of structural parameters and load-dependent phenomena.

In this paper, a structural health monitoring (SHM) system is proposed to provide automatic early warning for detecting damage and its location in composite pipelines at an early stage. The study considers a basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) pipeline with an embedded Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensory system and first discusses the shortcomings and challenges with incorporating FBG sensors for accurate detection of damage information in pipelines. The novelty and the main focus of this study is, however, a proposed approach that relies on designing an integrated sensing-diagnostic SHM system that has the capability to detect damage in composite pipelines at an early stage via implementation of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithm combining deep learning and other efficient machine learning methods using an Enhanced Convolutional Neural Network (ECNN) without retraining the model. The proposed architecture replaces the softmax layer by a k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) algorithm for inference. Finite element models are developed and calibrated by the results of pipe measurements under damage tests. The models are then used to assess the patterns of the strain distributions of the pipeline under internal pressure loading and under pressure changes due to bursts, and to find the relationship of strains at different locations axially and circumferentially. A prediction algorithm for pipe damage mechanisms using distributed strain patterns is also developed. The ECNN is designed and trained to identify the condition of pipe deterioration so the initiation of damage can be detected. The strain results from the current method and the available experimental results in the literature show excellent agreement. The average error between the ECNN data and FBG sensor data is 0.093%, thus confirming the reliability and accuracy of the proposed method. The proposed ECNN achieves high performance with 93.33% accuracy (P%), 91.18% regression rate (R%) and a 90.54% F1-score (F%).

Piezoceramic transducers (PCTs) bonded to carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite structures must be durable as well as remain properly bonded to the structure in order to provide reliable data for accurate guided-wave-based structural health monitoring (SHM) of aeronautical components. The current method of bonding transducers to composite structures through epoxy adhesives faces some shortcomings, such as difficult reparability, lack of weldability, longer curing cycles, and shorter shelf life. To overcome these shortcomings, a new efficient procedure for bonding the transducers to thermoplastic (TP) composite structures was developed by utilizing TP adhesive films. Application-suitable TP films (TPFs) were identified and characterized through standard differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and single lap shear (SLS) tests to study their melting behavior and bonding strength, respectively. Special PCTs called acousto-ultrasonic composite transducers (AUCTs) were bonded to high-performance TP composites (carbon fiber Poly-Ether-Ether-Ketone) coupons with a reference adhesive (Loctite EA 9695) and the selected TPFs. The integrity and durability of the bonded AUCTs in aeronautical operational environmental conditions (AOEC) were assessed in accordance to the standard Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics DO-160. The AOEC tests performed were operating low and high temperatures, thermal cycling, hot-wet, and fluid susceptibility tests. The health and bonding quality of the AUCTs were evaluated by the electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) spectroscopy method and ultrasonic inspections. The AUCT defects were created artificially and their influence on the susceptance spectra (SS) was measured to compare them with the AOEC-tested AUCTs. The results show that a small change occurred in the SS characteristics of the bonded AUCTs in all of the adhesive cases after the AOEC tests. After comparing the changes in SS characteristics of simulated defects with that of the AOEC-tested AUCTs, the change is relatively smaller and therefore it can be concluded that no serious degradation of the AUCT or the adhesive layer has occurred. It was observed that the most critical tests among the AOEC tests are the fluid susceptibility tests, which can cause the biggest change in the SS characteristics. Comparing the performance of the AUCTs bonded with the reference adhesive and the selected TPFs in the AOEC tests, it was seen that some of the TPFs, e.g., Pontacol 22.100 outperforms the reference adhesive, while the other TPFs have similar performance to that of the reference adhesive. Therefore, in conclusion, the AUCTs bonded with the selected TPFs can withstand the operational and environmental conditions of an aircraft structure, and hence, the proposed procedure is easily installed, reparable, and a more reliable method of bonding sensors to aircraft structures.

The structural collapse of a street lighting pole represents an aspect that is often underestimated and unpredictable, but of relevant importance for the safety of people and things. These events are complex to evaluate since several sources of damage are involved. In addition, traditional inspection methods are ineffective, do not correctly quantify the residual life of poles, and are inefficient, requiring enormous costs associated with the vastness of elements to be investigated. An advantageous alternative is to adopt a distributed type of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) technique based on the Internet of Things (IoT). This paper proposes the design of a low-cost system, which is also easy to integrate in current infrastructures, for monitoring the structural behavior of street lighting poles in Smart Cities. At the same time, this device collects previous structural information and offers some secondary functionalities related to its application, such as meteorological information. Furthermore, this paper intends to lay the foundations for the development of a method that is able to avoid the collapse of the poles. Specifically, the implementation phase is described in the aspects concerning low-cost devices and sensors for data acquisition and transmission and the strategies of information technologies (ITs), such as Cloud/Edge approaches, for storing, processing and presenting the achieved measurements. Finally, an experimental evaluation of the metrological performance of the sensing features of this system is reported. The main results highlight that the employment of low-cost equipment and open-source software has a double implication. On one hand, they entail advantages such as limited costs and flexibility to accommodate the specific necessities of the interested user. On the other hand, the used sensors require an indispensable metrological evaluation of their performance due to encountered issues relating to calibration, reliability and uncertainty.

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been applied to assess strains, stresses, loads, corrosion, and temperature for structural health monitoring (SHM) of steel infrastructure, such as buildings, bridges, and pipelines. Since a single FBG sensor measures a particular parameter at a local spot, it is challenging to detect different types of anomalies and interactions of anomalies. This paper presents an approach to assess interactive anomalies caused by mechanical loading and corrosion on epoxy coated steel substrates using FBG sensors in real time. Experiments were performed by comparing the monitored center wavelength changes in the conditions with loading only, corrosion only, and simultaneous loading and corrosion. The theoretical and experimental results indicated that there were significant interactive influences between loading and corrosion for steel substrates. Loading accelerated the progress of corrosion for the epoxy coated steel substrate, especially when delamination in the epoxy coating was noticed. Through the real-time monitoring from the FBG sensors, the interactions between the anomalies induced by the loading and corrosion can be quantitatively evaluated through the corrosion depth and the loading contact length. These fundamental understandings of the interactions of different anomalies on steel structures can provide valuable information to engineers for better management of steel structures.

Structural health monitoring of lightweight constructions made of composite materials can be performed using guided ultrasonic waves. If modern fiber metal laminates are used, this requires integrated sensors that can record the inner displacement oscillations caused by the propagating guided ultrasonic waves. Therefore, we developed a robust MEMS vibrometer that can be integrated while maintaining the structural and functional compliance of the laminate. This vibrometer is directly sensitive to the high-frequency displacements from structure-borne ultrasound when excited in a frequency range between its first and second eigenfrequency. The vibrometer is mostly realized by processes earlier developed for a pressure sensor but with additional femtosecond laser ablation and encapsulation. The piezoresistive transducer, made from silicon, is encapsulated between top and bottom glass lids. The eigenfrequencies are experimentally determined using an optical micro vibrometer setup. The MEMS vibrometer functionality and usability for structural health monitoring are demonstrated on a customized test rig by recording application-relevant guided ultrasonic wave packages with a central frequency of 100 kHz at a distance of 0.2 m from the exciting ultrasound transducer.
