BACKGROUND: Comparatively little is known regarding the initial cardiorespiratory response of young racehorses to training. The objectives were to compare physiological parameters before and after introductory training and determine whether young Thoroughbreds show endoscopic signs of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). Ten Thoroughbreds (20-23 months) underwent 12-weeks of introductory training, including weekly speed sessions. Two 600 m high-speed exercise tests (HSET) were performed following weeks 4 and 12 while wearing a validated ergospirometry facemask. Peak oxygen consumption (V̇O2pk) and ventilatory parameters (tidal volume, VT; peak inspiratory and expiratory flow, PkV̇I, PkV̇E; respiratory frequency, Rf; minute ventilation, V̇E) were measured. The ventilatory equivalent of oxygen (V̇E/V̇O2) and the aerobic and anaerobic contributions to energy production were calculated. Maximal heart rate (HRmax) and HR at maximal speed (HRVmax) were determined. Post-exercise hematocrit, plasma ammonia and blood lactate were measured. Evidence of EIPH was investigated via tracheobronchoscopy post-exercise. Results were compared (paired t-test, P < 0.05). RESULTS: Horses were faster following training (P < 0.001) and V̇O2pk increased 28 ml/(kg total mass.min) (28 ± 16%; P < 0.001). Ventilatory (V̇E, P = 0.0015; Rf, P < 0.001; PkV̇I, P < 0.001; PkV̇E, P < 0.001) and cardiovascular parameters (HRmax, P = 0.03; HRVmax, P = 0.04) increased. The increase in V̇E was due to greater Rf, but not VT. V̇E/V̇O2 was lower (26 ± 3.6 vs 23 ± 3.7; P = 0.02), indicating improved ventilatory efficiency. Anaerobic contribution to total energy production increased from 15.6 ± 6.1% to 18.5 ± 6.3% (P = 0.02). Post-exercise hematocrit (P < 0.001), plasma ammonia (P = 0.03) and blood lactate (P = 0.001) increased following training. Horses showed no signs of EIPH. CONCLUSIONS: Young two-year-old Thoroughbreds responded well to introductory training without developing tracheobronchoscopic evidence of EIPH.

BACKGROUND: Exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) in athletic horses is characterized by the presence of blood from the lungs in the tracheobronchial tree after intense exercise. Despite the high prevalence of EIPH in horses, the primary aetiology remains unknown. Variants in the genes encoding CD39 and CD39L1 (ENTPD1 and ENTPD2, respectively) were previously reported as potential genetic causes involved in EIPH pathogenesis. However, the role of these variants in haemostatic functions is unknown. RESULTS: To investigate the association between EIPH and missense variants in the ENTPD1 (rs1152296272, rs68621348, and rs68621347) and ENTPD2 genes (rs782872967), 76 Thoroughbred horses diagnosed with EIPH and 56 without clinical signs of EIPH (control group) by trachea-bronchial endoscopy were genotyped. The rs1152296272 and rs68621347 variants were linked, which explained why the same results were found in all horses. Approximately 96% and 95% of the EIPH and control horses, respectively, carried at least one nonreference allele for these variants. In contrast, 100% of the control horses and 96% of the EIPH horses were homozygous for the reference allele for the rs68621348 variant. In the EIPH group, 1.5% of the horses were homozygotes and 24% were heterozygous for the nonreference allele of the rs782872967 variant. In the control group, the nonreference allele of this variant was observed only in heterozygotes (16%). There were no significant differences between groups for any of the variants. CONCLUSIONS: The variants previously described in the genes encoding the CD39 and CD39L1 enzymes were highly present in the studied population. However, no association was found between the occurrence of EIPH and the presence of these variants in Thoroughbred horses in this study.

In September 2020, an outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease occurred in captive reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) and was associated with neurological signs and mortality. Four reindeer died or were euthanized after acute illness over a 12-day period. Affected reindeer displayed abnormal behavior, neurologic signs, lethargy, and/or lameness. The most consistent gross finding was dark red streaks throughout the adrenal gland cortices (4/4). One animal had acute hemorrhage involving the subcutis and skeletal muscles over the ventrolateral body wall and back, and abomasal serosa. Histologically, the most common lesions were adrenal gland cortical hemorrhage (4/4) with necrosis (3/4) and lymphoplasmacytic meningoencephalitis with gliosis, glial nodules, satellitosis, and nonsuppurative perivascular cuffing (4/4). The brain lesions were most frequent in the gray matter of the cerebrum, hippocampus, and thalamus but also involved the cerebellum and brainstem. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus serotype 6 was detected through PCR and sequencing of the spleen in all cases.

Hoof diseases are a major welfare and economic issue in the global dairy cattle production industry, which can be minimized through improved management and breeding practices. Optimal genetic improvement of hoof health could benefit from a deep understanding of the genetic background and biological underpinning of indicators of hoof health. Therefore, the primary objectives of this study were to perform genome-wide association studies, using imputed high-density genetic markers data from North American Holstein cattle, for 8 hoof-related traits: digital dermatitis, sole ulcer, sole hemorrhage, white line lesion, heel horn erosion, interdigital dermatitis, interdigital hyperplasia, and toe ulcer, and a hoof health index. De-regressed estimated breeding values from 25,580 Holstein animals were used as pseudo-phenotypes for the association analyses. The genomic quality control, genotype phasing, and genotype imputation were performed using the PLINK (version 1.9), Eagle (version 2.4.1), and Minimac4 software, respectively. The functional genomic analyses were performed using the GALLO R package and the DAVID platform. We identified 22, 34, 14, 22, 28, 33, 24, 43, and 15 significant markers for digital dermatitis, heel horn erosion, interdigital dermatitis, interdigital hyperplasia, sole hemorrhage, sole ulcer, toe ulcer, white line lesion disease, and the hoof health index, respectively. The significant markers were located across all autosomes, except BTA10, BTA12, BTA20, BTA26, BTA27, and BTA28. Moreover, the genomic regions identified overlap with various previously reported quantitative trait loci for exterior, health, meat and carcass, milk, production, and reproduction traits. The enrichment analyses identified 44 significant gene ontology terms. These enriched genomic regions harbor various candidate genes previously associated with bone development, metabolism, and infectious and immunological diseases. These findings indicate that hoof health traits are highly polygenic and influenced by a wide range of biological processes.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a 3-wire method with endoscopic guidance for extensive nasal septum resection. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Thirteen horses with nasal septum diseases. METHODS: In anesthetized horses in left lateral recumbency, endoscopic guidance was used to place obstetrical wires for the ventral and caudal incisions in the nasal septum and a trephine opening was used to place the dorsal wire. The rostral aspect of the septum was incised with a scalpel, followed by incisions with the preplaced wires, and the nasal passages were packed with gauze. Horses were recovered with a temporary tracheotomy. RESULTS: Conversion to intraoral placement of wires was required in two horses, one to correct entangled wires and the other because hemorrhage obscured the endoscopic view. Exercise tolerance was improved postoperatively, abnormal respiratory noise was decreased or eliminated by surgery in all horses, and all owners were satisfied. One Thoroughbred racehorse performed with modest success. CONCLUSIONS: Modification of the 3-wire method was effective and safe for extensive nasal septum removal. Technical complications of the procedure include entangling of wires and intraoperative hemorrhage. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Endoscopic guidance can be used to place obstetrical wires for nasal septum resection in small horses and precludes use of a large tracheotomy for anesthetic delivery. Reasons for athletic failures were difficult to establish retrospectively, although assessment of postoperative noise at speed might be more relevant to recovery of athletic potential than assessment at slower gaits.

Two adult dogs were presented at 25 and 30 days following tibial external skeletal fixator placement (case 1) and tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (case 2), respectively. Clinical signs at presentation for each of them included acute onset lethargy, non-weight-bearing lameness, and hemorrhage at the surgical site with large hematoma formation. On admission, emergency whole blood transfusion was required in case 2 with a preoperative packed cell volume of 13%. Both dogs were diagnosed with pseudoaneurysm of the cranial tibial artery based on color Doppler ultrasonography. Additionally, computed tomography angiography was performed in one dog. Surgical treatment of the dogs included ligation of the cranial tibial artery supplying the pseudoaneurysm and curettage of hematoma. The surgery was completed without complications in case 1, but case 2 experienced inadvertent rupture of pseudoaneurysm with significant blood loss, which required another whole blood transfusion during the procedure. Both dogs had excellent functional recovery with no recurrence of clinical signs. We hypothesized that pseudoaneurysms were primarily caused by trauma secondary to placement of surgical implants or osteotomy. For orthopedic surgeons, it is important to recognize clinical signs of a potential tibial arterial pseudoaneurysm, as early surgical intervention may prevent loss of limb or life.

CASE HISTORY: An outbreak of suspected Kikuyu grass (Cenchrus clandestinus) intoxication among dairy cattle occurred on the island of Terceira in the Azores (Portugal), in October 2022. The animals affected were non-lactating dairy cows and heifers from five small farms grazing (free or tethered) a Kikuyu-dominant pasture. Of the 29 animals exposed, 17 were affected, and eight (five heifers and three adult cows) died, resulting in a morbidity rate of 58%, a mortality rate of 28% and a case mortality rate of 47%. CLINICAL FINDINGS AND TREATMENT: The clinical signs were non-specific and inconsistent, and included dry faeces, some with dark red blood; apathy and prostration; abdominal dilatation; tachycardia; tachypnoea; pale or jaundiced mucous membranes; sham drinking; sialorrhoea; and moderate to severe dehydration. Symptomatic treatment was provided but was ineffective. Haematology and serum biochemistry revealed an acute inflammatory leukogram, increased alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, decreased gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) activity, and azotaemia.The most consistent necropsy findings were haemorrhages in the epicardium and endocardium, an enlarged liver with rounded edges, non-perforated abomasal ulcers, and haemorrhagic lesions in the small and large intestines. Histopathology indicated myocarditis, hepatitis, interstitial nephritis, enteritis and colitis.Several fungal species were isolated from grass samples taken from affected pastures including several Fusarium spp., the genus implicated in Kikuyu toxicosis. Immediate removal of the animals from the pasture with Kikuyu was the only measure that prevented new cases and resulted in the recovery of some of the less affected animals. DIAGNOSIS: The epidemiological features of this outbreak and the clinical signs and micro- and macroscopic lesions observed were highly suggestive of Kikuyu grass poisoning. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although the weather conditions varied from other published cases, the grazing conditions (almost exclusive Kikuyu grass) and the post-mortem findings were very similar to those described in the literature, particularly the haemorrhages in the epicardium and endocardium. Kikuyu grass is very invasive and presents many desirable characteristics as cattle feed. Thus, an increase in cases of intoxication may be expected. Practitioners and farmers in areas where Kikuyu grass is abundant should be aware of the potential risks of grazing cattle exclusively on these pastures. They should also be aware of the early and subtle signs of Kikuyu intoxication to allow for timely removal of the animals from pasture.

In the present research pathology and molecular diagnosis of elephant endotheliotropic herpes virus-haemorrhagic disease (EEHV-HD) among Asian elephants was studied. Out of 76 cases, 20 were positive for EEHV infection in PANPOL and POL1 based semi-nested PCR. Out of 20 samples, 10 samples were fatal cases of EEHV-HD while 10 were of either subclinical or latent infection. Acute onset haemorrhagic disease with EEHV-HD had anorexia, facial and neck swelling, cyanotic buccal mucosa and tongue, nasal and ocular discharge, and colic. The hallmark of gross finding in all cases were severe haemorrhagic lesions in the internal organs viz. cyanosis of tongue with multifocal petechial haemorrhages, diffuse epicardial and endocardial haemorrhages, swollen liver (rounded edges) with parenchymal haemorrhages, serosal and mucosal haemorrhages in gastrointestinal tract, congested kidneys with corticomedullary haemorrhages, highly congested meninges, and brain capillaries with haemorrhages. Microscopic findings in all the cases had severe vascular changes in the visceral organs. Microthrombi was present in the vasculature of tongue, heart, lung, liver, kidney, and brain. The endothelial lining of most of the blood vessels were swollen with apoptotic changes. Amphophilic to basophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were observed in the endothelial cells. Immunostaining using anti-EEHV DNAPOL hyperimmune sera revealed intense positive signals in the endothelium of blood vessels and their walls. Quantification of viral load in necropsy tissue samples revealed highest in the heart (7.4 × 106/µg of sample) and least in the brain (9 × 103/µg of sample). The PCR amplicons from EEHV1 specific genes (POL1(U38) and TER were subjected to partial genome sequencing which had 99.9% similarity with the EEHV1A subtype. It was concluded that Asian elephants in India are latently infected for EEHV1 and in all the fatal EEHV-HD cases, EEHV1A subtype was the causative agent with characteristic pathomorphological changes in visceral organs.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenic Clostridia cause neurotoxic, histotoxic and enterotoxic infections in humans and animals. Several Clostridium species have been associated with abomasitis in ruminants. The present study aimed to investigate the frequency, and the presence of virulence genes, of Clostridium perfringens, Paeniclostridium sordellii and Clostridium septicum in lambs and goat kids with hemorrhagic abomasitis. RESULTS: A total of 38 abomasum samples, collected from lambs and goat kids of 1 week to 1 month of age in different farms located in eastern Turkey between 2021 and 2022, were evaluated by histopathology, culture and PCR. At necropsy, the abomasum of the animals was excessively filled with caseinized content and gas, and the abomasum mucosa was hemorrhagic in varying degrees. In histopathological evaluation, acute necrotizing hemorrhagic inflammation was noted in abomasum samples. The examination of swab samples by culture and PCR revealed that C. perfringens type A was the most frequently detected species (86.84%) either alone or in combination with other Clostridium species. P. sordellii, C. perfringens type F and C. septicum were also harboured in the samples, albeit at low rates. Beta2 toxin gene (cpb2) was found in three of C. perfringens type A positive samples. CONCLUSION: It was suggested that vaccination of pregnant animals with toxoid vaccines would be beneficial in terms of protecting newborn animals against Clostridial infections. This study investigated the presence of clostridial toxin genes in abomasal samples for the first time in Turkey.

Exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) is a relevant respiratory disease in sport horses, which can be diagnosed by examination of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) cells using the total hemosiderin score (THS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and reproducibility of annotators and to validate a deep learning-based algorithm for the THS. Digitized cytological specimens stained for iron were prepared from 52 equine BALF samples. Ten annotators produced a THS for each slide according to published methods. The reference methods for comparing annotator's and algorithmic performance included a ground truth dataset, the mean annotators' THSs, and chemical iron measurements. Results of the study showed that annotators had marked interobserver variability of the THS, which was mostly due to a systematic error between annotators in grading the intracytoplasmatic hemosiderin content of individual macrophages. Regarding overall measurement error between the annotators, 87.7% of the variance could be reduced by using standardized grades based on the ground truth. The algorithm was highly consistent with the ground truth in assigning hemosiderin grades. Compared with the ground truth THS, annotators had an accuracy of diagnosing EIPH (THS of < or ≥ 75) of 75.7%, whereas, the algorithm had an accuracy of 92.3% with no relevant differences in correlation with chemical iron measurements. The results show that deep learning-based algorithms are useful for improving reproducibility and routine applicability of the THS. For THS by experts, a diagnostic uncertainty interval of 40 to 110 is proposed. THSs within this interval have insufficient reproducibility regarding the EIPH diagnosis.

Mortality of dolphins in fishing operations is often under-estimated, as shown by studies of beach-washed carcasses. Linking evidence obtained during necropsies with fishing method is fundamental to understanding the extent of mortality and the manner in which animals die. The South Australian Sardine Fishery (SASF) has operated a purse-seine industry since 1991. This study characterised injuries, pathological changes and life history of 49 dead dolphins collected from SASF during 2006-2019. Histology examination was conducted on 25 animals. Neonates, calves and juveniles accounted for 63% of the sample. Of mature females (n = 14), 11 were pregnant or lactating, with cryptic mortality estimated to be 20% of dolphins studied. Body condition was robust in 48 dolphins. Net marks were seen on 82%, mostly on the head, trunk and peduncle. Broken/missing teeth were noted in 63%. All dolphins had subdermal haemorrhage (moderate to severe in 96%), particularly around the head. Deep haemorrhage was common, including around occipital and flipper condyles, and organs. Copious fluid was present in the thoracic (pleural) and abdominal (ascites) cavities of half of the dolphins. Within the lungs, watery fluid and froth were observed in 100 and 39%, respectively. Recent bone fractures were documented in 43% of dolphins, mostly associated with haemorrhage. Severe blunt trauma appeared to be the primary cause of death, and 10 dolphins also had other significant pathologies. Visceral organ congestion and mild cardiomyopathy were observed. Stomachs contained prey remains in 75% of cases. The results of this study may help identify unreported purse-seine mortalities washed up in South Australia and elsewhere.

Intravascular lymphoma (IVL) is characterized by the proliferation of large malignant lymphocytes within the lumen of blood vessels. This retrospective, multi-center, case series study aimed to describe the MRI features of confirmed central nervous system IVL in dogs and compare them with histopathological findings. Medical record databases from seven veterinary centers were searched for cases of histologically confirmed IVL. Dogs were included if an MRI was performed. The MRI studies and histopathology samples were reviewed to compare the MRI changes with the histopathological findings. Twelve dogs met the inclusion criteria (12 brains and three spinal cords). Imaging of the brains revealed multifocal T2-weighted/FLAIR hyperintense and T1-weighted iso-hypointense lesions, with variable contrast enhancement; areas of abnormal diffusion both in arterial and venous territories in diffusion-weighted imaging; and meningeal enhancement. On gradient echo images (GRE), the changes comprised tubular susceptibility artifacts, consistent with the "susceptibility vessel sign", and additional variably sized/shaped intraparenchymal susceptibility artifacts. Spinal cord lesions presented as fusiform T2-weighted hyperintensities with scattered susceptibility artifacts on GRE and variable parenchymal and meningeal contrast enhancement. On histopathology, subarachnoid hemorrhages and neuroparenchymal areas of edema and necrosis, with or without hemorrhage, indicating ischemic and hemorrhagic infarctions, were found. These lesions were concurrent with severely dilated meningeal and parenchymal arteries and veins plugged by neoplastic lymphocytes and fibrin. Due to the unique angiocentric distribution of IVL, ischemic and hemorrhagic infarcts of variable chronicity affecting both the arterial and venous territories associated with thrombi formation can be detected on MRI.

Adenoviral hemorrhagic disease (AHD), caused by deer atadenovirus A (OdAdV-1), affects captive and free-ranging cervids across North America. Here we present a case of AHD in a 6-month-old female elk calf from a farm in Alberta. Histopathology revealed multisystemic vasculitis with endothelial intranuclear inclusion bodies, pulmonary hemorrhage, and small intestinal hemorrhage characteristic of the acute systemic form of AHD. Immunohistochemistry was positive for OdAdV-1, confirming the diagnosis. Whole-genome sequencing of the virus was conducted for phylogenetic comparison. This is the 1st reported case of AHD in a farmed elk in Canada and the 1st reported case in an elk in Alberta. Key clinical message: Adenoviral hemorrhagic disease (AHD) is an emerging disease that should be investigated as a top differential when diagnosticians and veterinarians encounter young cervids found dead with pulmonary edema or hemorrhage and/or hemorrhagic enteropathy.


Maladie hémorragique adénovirale chez un wapiti d'élevage (Cervus canadensis) en Alberta, Canada. La maladie hémorragique adénovirale (AHD), causée par l'atadénovirus A du cerf (OdAdV-1), affecte les cervidés en captivité et en liberté partout en Amérique du Nord. Nous présentons ici un cas d'AHD chez un wapiti femelle de 6 mois d'une ferme en Alberta. L'histopathologie a révélé une vascularite multi-systémique avec des corps d'inclusion intranucléaires endothéliaux, une hémorragie pulmonaire et une hémorragie de l'intestin grêle caractéristiques de la forme systémique aiguë de l'AHD. L'immunohistochimie était positive pour OdAdV-1, confirmant le diagnostic. Le séquençage du génome entier du virus a été réalisé à des fins de comparaison phylogénétique. A 5-month-old intact female Australian shepherd dog was referred to our clinic for neurologic signs including ataxia, a head tilt, and altered mentation following consumption of an unidentified rodenticide several days prior to developing clinical signs. A provisional diagnosis of bromethalin toxicosis had been made, given the neurologic signs seen and the general increased use of bromethalin-containing rodenticide products. However, on physical examination, the dog was noted to have scleral hemorrhage and bleeding at the venipuncture sites, which was inconsistent with bromethalin toxicosis. Coagulation testing was supportive of anticoagulant rodenticide toxicosis and the rodenticide was later identified as the first-generation anticoagulant rodenticide diphacinone. The neurologic signs seen were attributed to a coagulopathy causing multifocal hemorrhage into the central nervous system. Neurologic signs rapidly resolved following treatment with a frozen plasma transfusion and vitamin K1. This atypical presentation of an anticoagulant rodenticide toxicosis highlights the need for accurate product identification, if available, and thorough patient examination and laboratory testing. An atypical presentation of anticoagulant rodenticide toxicosis should be considered when neurologic signs are present with clinical bleeding, especially if the type of rodenticide is unknown, or even if it was not thought to have an anticoagulant as the active ingredient. Key clinical message: Given the change in commercially available rodenticide products, this case highlights the need for accurate product identification in cases of suspected toxicosis, and the variable clinical signs that can be seen following anticoagulant rodenticide toxicosis.


Présentation atypique d'une toxicose aux rodenticides anticoagulants chez un chien. Une chienne berger australien intacte âgée de 5 mois a été référée à notre clinique pour des signes neurologiques, notamment de l'ataxie, une inclinaison de la tête et une altération de l'état mental à la suite de la consommation d'un rodenticide non identifié plusieurs jours avant l'apparition des signes cliniques. Un diagnostic provisoire de toxicose à la brométhaline avait été posé, compte tenu des signes neurologiques observés et d'une utilisation historique accrue de produits rodenticides contenant de la brométhaline. Cependant, lors de l'examen physique, il a été constaté que le chien présentait une hémorragie sclérale et des saignements au niveau des sites de ponction veineuse, ce qui n'était pas cohérent avec une toxicose à la brométhaline. Les tests de coagulation ont confirmé la toxicose au rodenticide anticoagulant et le rodenticide a ensuite été identifié comme étant le rodenticide anticoagulant de première génération diphacinone. Les signes neurologiques observés ont été attribués à une coagulopathie provoquant une hémorragie multifocale du système nerveux central. Les signes neurologiques ont rapidement disparu après un traitement par transfusion de plasma congelé et de vitamine K1. Cette présentation atypique d'une toxicose aux rodenticides anticoagulants met en évidence la nécessité d'une identification précise du produit, si disponible, ainsi que d'un examen approfondi du patient et de tests de laboratoire. Une présentation atypique de toxicose des rodenticides anticoagulants doit être envisagée lorsque des signes neurologiques sont présents avec saignement clinique, en particulier si le type de rodenticide est inconnu, ou même si l'on ne pense pas qu'un anticoagulant soit l'ingrédient actif.Message clinique clé :Compte tenu de l'évolution des produits rodenticides disponibles dans le commerce, ce cas met en évidence la nécessité d'une identification précise du produit en cas de suspicion de toxicose et les signes cliniques variables qui peuvent être observés à la suite d'une toxicose au rodenticide anticoagulant.(Traduit par Dr Serge Messier).

Camels are adapted to digestion of dry rough forages for their nutrition, and sudden change to highly digestible feed during the racing season causes digestive disorders. The current study investigated the cause of death among racing dromedary camels within 3-7 days following a sudden onset of fever ≈ 41 °C, colic with tarry feces, and enlarged superficial lymph nodes. Marked leukopenia, low RBC count and thrombocytopenia, deranged liver and renal function tests, and prolonged coagulation profiles were reported. Compartment 1 fluid revealed a pH of 4.3-5.2 with absence or few ciliated protozoa and Gram-positive microbial flora. Widespread petechial to ecchymotic hemorrhages were observed in various organs including the gastrointestinal tract (compartment 3 and colon), lungs, and heart. Fibrin thrombi in arterioles, capillaries, venules, and medium-sized veins were observed especially in the pulmonary interstitium, submucosa of the large intestine (ascending colon), deep dermis, and renal cortex. Furthermore, widespread hemorrhages and necrosis were constant histopathological lesions in parenchymatous organs. Based on clinical signs, hematology, blood biochemistry, and gross and microscopical findings, the cases were diagnosed as compartment 1 acidosis associated with hemorrhagic diathesis and endotoxicosis. Finally, compartment 1 acidosis associated with hemorrhagic diathesis is a serious fatal disease on the Arabian Peninsula in racing dromedaries causing multi-organ dysfunction and coagulopathy and disseminated hemorrhages.

Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli expressing cytotoxic necrotizing factor (CNF) 1 and 2 virulence factors is a rarely reported cause of acute, fatal necrohemorrhagic pneumonia in canines. A review of cases of necrohemorrhagic pneumonia in beagles at our facility between 2013 and 2021 revealed 21 dogs that died or were euthanized after acute onset lethargy, dyspnea, and hemorrhage. Some affected animals had recently been transported to the facility. In all dogs, lung lobes were discolored dark red and consolidated. Histologic lesions in 17 of these included alveolar necrosis, hemorrhage, edema, fibrin, acute inflammation, and intralesional colonies of bacilli. Lung was cultured for 10 dogs with E. coli isolated and CNF1 identified by virulence factor PCR in 7 of those. Based on these findings, extraintestinal E. coli should be considered an important cause of acute fatal necrohemorrhagic pneumonia in purpose-bred beagle research dogs and may be associated with a recent history of transport.

BACKGROUND: In animals, only few reports exist about the occurrence and causes of subconjunctival bleedings, especially in newborn calves. Most case reports and studies showed that the major risk factors for subconjunctival bleedings in animals are traumatic events such as birth trauma and traffic accidents, respectively. In neonatal babies, it is suggested that compression of the thorax and abdomen during delivery or forces generated in utero during labor may raise venous pressure to conjunctival vessels and can cause subconjunctival bleedings. RESULTS: The incidence of bleedings in neonatal Holstein-Friesian calves was 2.4 per cent of 289 neonatal calves examined over a six-year period. In general, two types of subconjunctival bleedings were seen. One was usually in a semilunar fashion immediately outside the limbus of the eye. The other type was a stripe or macule of variable size at different positions of the sclera. The subconjunctival bleedings were not related to gestational time. In all cases, affected calves were born without assistance. Multiparous cows were more often involved in the calves with subconjunctival bleedings. Two calves examined haematologically did not show signs of anemia or thrombocytopenia. CONCLUSIONS: Subconjunctival bleedings in neonatal calves appear not to be incidental findings. Main causes or associated conditions of subconjunctival bleedings were not found.

Exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) is a common condition of Thoroughbred racehorses that is usually responsible for reduced performance, while exercise-associated fatal pulmonary hemorrhage (EAFPH) is characterized by severe pulmonary bleeding of unknown pathogenesis resulting in sudden death during strenuous exercise. The aim of the study was to characterize and compare anamnestic data together with pulmonary gross, histologic, and ultrastructural findings in racehorses with EIPH (n = 10), EAFPH (n = 10), and control horses (n = 5). No differences in anamnesis were identified between the 3 groups. Grossly cranial lobe reddening and edema scores were significantly more prevalent and severe in the EAFPH group compared with the EIPH and control groups. Histologically, hemorrhage scores were higher in the EAFPH group, while hemosiderophages, iron encrustations of collagen and elastin fibers, and vascular remodeling scores were significantly higher in EIPH group compared with the EAFPH and control groups. In all groups, caudal lung locations exhibited a significantly higher score for vascular remodeling, hemosiderophage accumulation, iron encrustation, and type II pneumocyte hyperplasia when compared with cranial, dorsal, and ventral locations. Ultrastructural analysis of perivascular collagen showed fibrils with significantly larger diameters in the EAFPH group compared with the EIPH group but not compared with the control group. This study demonstrates that lungs of horses that experienced EAFPH show significantly less vascular remodeling and other long-term pulmonary abnormalities that characterize horses with EIPH.

OBJECTIVE: To describe acid-base status using the Henderson-Hasselbalch, Stewart and semi-quantitative methods of analysis in a feline haemorrhage-resuscitation model. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized crossover study. ANIMALS: A total of six domestic cats (mean age, 21 months; weight, 4.9 kg). METHODS: Venous blood samples were taken before haemorrhage, after haemorrhage at 30 minute intervals during fluid resuscitation and at 24 hours. The cats were anaesthetized and underwent following treatments: no purposeful haemorrhage and resuscitation (NoPHR), purposeful haemorrhage followed by either lactated Ringer's solution (LRS) or 6% tetrastarch 130/0.4 (Voluven) for resuscitation. LRS and Voluven were administered at 60 and 20 mL kg-1 hour-1, respectively, for 120 minutes. Variables used for the analysis methods were measured or calculated from the blood samples and then compared among treatments over time using a general linear mixed model (p < 0.05; data reported as mean and standard deviation). RESULTS: The total blood loss at 120 minutes was 10.2 ± 2.3, 29.3 ± 9.0 and 29.1 ± 6.3 mL kg-1 for NoPHR, LRS and Voluven, respectively. Total volumes of LRS and Voluven administered were 120 and 40 mL kg-1, respectively. All cats became acidaemic during anaesthesia regardless of treatment. The Henderson-Hasselbalch method indicated that anaesthetized cats undergoing severe haemorrhage and resuscitation manifest a mixed acidosis. The Stewart method indicated two counter metabolic processes that contributed to the overall pH-decrease in apparent strong ion difference (acidosis) and decrease in total weak acids (alkalosis). The semi-quantitative method identified the free water and chloride effects as variables causing acidosis and the albumin effect causing alkalosis. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In an experimental haemorrhage and resuscitation model in cats, blood pH was similar among treatments over time regardless of severe haemorrhage and resuscitation with LRS or Voluven or mild haemorrhage and no resuscitation.

OBJECTIVES: To document changes in urinary biomarker concentration and conventional diagnostic tests of acute kidney injury (AKI) following hypotension and fluid resuscitation in anaesthetized dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental, repeated measures, prospective study. ANIMALS: A group of six male adult Greyhound dogs. METHODS: Following general anaesthesia, severe hypotension was induced by phlebotomy, maintaining mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) < 40 mmHg for 60 minutes, followed by resuscitation with intravenous gelatine solution to maintain MAP > 60 mmHg for 3 hours. Following euthanasia, renal tissue was examined by light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Urinary and serum concentrations of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), cystatin C (CysC), and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), serum creatinine and urine output were measured at baseline and hourly until euthanasia. Data are presented as mean and 95% confidence interval and analysed using repeated measures analysis of variance with Dunnett's adjustment, p < 0.05. RESULTS: Structural damage to proximal renal tubular cells was evident on LM and TEM. Urinary biomarker concentrations were significantly elevated from baseline, peaking 2 hours after haemorrhage at 19.8 (15.1-25.9) ng mL-1 NGAL (p = 0.002), 2.54 (1.64-3.43) mg mL-1 CysC (p = 0.009) and 2043 (790-5458) U L-1 GGT (p < 0.001). Serum creatinine remained within a breed-specific reference interval in all dogs. Urinary protein-creatinine ratio (UPC) was significantly elevated in all dogs from 1 hour following haemorrhage. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Urinary NGAL, CysC and GGT concentrations, and UPC were consistently elevated within 1 hour of severe hypotension, suggesting that proximal renal tubules are damaged in the earliest stage of ischaemia-reperfusion AKI. Measurement of urinary biomarkers may allow early diagnosis of AKI in anaesthetized dogs. Urinary GGT concentration and UPC are particularly useful as they can be measured on standard biochemistry analysers.
