RESUMO

Prior investigations have established that the manipulation of neural activity has the potential to influence both rapid eye movement and non-rapid eye movement sleep. Low-intensity retinal ultrasound stimulation has shown effectiveness in the modulation of neural activity. Nevertheless, the specific effects of retinal ultrasound stimulation on rapid eye movement and non-rapid eye movement sleep, as well as its potential to enhance overall sleep quality, remain to be elucidated. Here, we found that: In healthy mice, retinal ultrasound stimulation: (i) reduced total sleep time and non-rapid eye movement sleep ratio; (ii) changed relative power and sample entropy of the delta (0.5-4 Hz) in non-rapid eye movement sleep; and (iii) enhanced relative power of the theta (4-8 Hz) and reduced theta-gamma coupling strength in rapid eye movement sleep. In Alzheimer's disease mice with sleep disturbances, retinal ultrasound stimulation: (i) reduced the total sleep time; (ii) altered the relative power of the gamma band during rapid eye movement sleep; and (iii) enhanced the coupling strength of delta-gamma in non-rapid eye movement sleep and weakened the coupling strength of theta-fast gamma. The results indicate that retinal ultrasound stimulation can modulate rapid eye movement and non-rapid eye movement-related neural activity; however, it is not beneficial to the sleep quality of healthy and Alzheimer's disease mice.

Sleep disturbance is associated with the development of neurodegenerative disease. We aimed to address the effects of sleep quality on brain glucose metabolism measured by 18F-Fl uorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) in healthy middle-aged adults. A total of 378 healthy men (mean age: 42.8±3.6 years) were included in this study. Participants underwent brain 18F-FDG PET and completed the Korean version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-K). Additionally, anthropometric measurements were obtained. PETs were spatially normalized to MNI space using PET templates from SPM5 with PMOD. The Automated Anatomical Labeling 2 atlas was used to define regions of interest (ROIs). The mean uptake of each ROI was scaled to the mean of the global cortical uptake of each individual and defined as the standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR). After the logarithmic transformation of the regional SUVR, the effects of the PSQI-K on the regional SUVR were investigated using Bayesian hierarchical modeling. Brain glucose metabolism of the posterior cingulate, precuneus, and thalamus showed a negative association with total PSQI-K scores in the Bayesian model ROI-based analysis. Voxel-based analysis using statistical parametric mapping revealed a negative association between the total PSQI-K scores and brain glucose metabolism of the precuneus, postcentral gyrus, posterior cingulate, and thalamus. Poor sleep quality is negatively associated with brain glucose metabolism in the precuneus, posterior cingulate, and thalamus. Therefore, the importance of sleep should not be overlooked, even in healthy middle-aged adults.

AIM: Brain volume is influenced by several factors that can change throughout the day. In addition, most of these factors are influenced by sleep quality. This study investigated diurnal variation in brain volume and its relation to overnight sleep quality. METHODS: We enrolled 1,003 healthy Koreans without any psychiatric disorders aged 60 years or older. We assessed sleep quality and average wake time using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and divided sleep quality into good, moderate, and poor groups. We estimated the whole and regional brain volumes from three-dimensional T1-weighted brain MRI scans. We divided the interval between average wake-up time and MRI acquisition time (INT) into tertile groups: short (INT1), medium (INT2), and long (INT3). RESULTS: Whole and regional brain volumes showed no significance with respect to INT. However, the `interaction between INT and sleep quality showed significance for whole brain, cerebral gray matter, and cerebrospinal fluid volumes (p < .05). The INT2 group showed significantly lower volumes of whole brain, whole gray matter, cerebral gray matter, cortical gray matter, subcortical gray matter, and cerebrospinal fluid than the INT1 and INT3 groups only in the individuals with good sleep quality. CONCLUSION: Human brain volume changes significantly within a day associated with overnight sleep in the individuals with good sleep quality.

Recent studies have shown that a single bout of exercise has acute improvements on various forms of memory, including procedural motor learning, through mechanisms such as the plasticity-promoting effect. This study aimed to examine (1) the acute effects of timing and intensity of aerobic exercise on the acquisition and retention of motor learning in healthy adults, (2) the effect of sleep quality of the night before and after acquisition on motor learning, and (3) the acute effects of low and moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on cognitive functions. Seventy-five healthy adults were divided into five groups: Two groups performed low or moderate intensity aerobic exercise before motor practice; two groups performed low or moderate intensity aerobic exercise after motor practice; the control group only did motor practice. Low- and moderate-intensity exercises consisted of 30 min of running at 57%-63% and 64%-76% of the maximum heart rate, respectively. Motor learning was assessed using a golf putting task. The sleep quality of the night before and after the acquisition was evaluated using the Richard Campbell Sleep Questionnaire. Cognitive function was assessed before and after aerobic exercise using the Paced Auditory Serial Acquisition Task test. Results indicated that all groups demonstrated acquisition, 1-day and 7-day retention at a similar level (p > 0.05). Regression analysis revealed no significant relationship between sleep quality on the night before the experimental day and total acquisition (p > 0.05). However, a positive correlation was found between the sleep quality on the night of the experimental day and both 1-day and 7-day retention (p < 0.05). A single bout of low or moderate acute exercise did not modify motor skill acquisition and retention. Other results showed the importance of night sleep quality on the retention and proved that a single bout of moderate intensity exercise was associated with improved cognitive function.

Protecting brain health is a goal of early intervention. We explored whether sleep quality or chronotype could predict white matter (WM) integrity in emerging mental disorders. Young people (N = 364) accessing early-intervention clinics underwent assessments for chronotype, subjective sleep quality, and diffusion tensor imaging. Using machine learning, we examined whether chronotype or sleep quality (alongside diagnostic and demographic factors) could predict four measures of WM integrity: fractional anisotropy (FA), and radial, axial, and mean diffusivities (RD, AD and MD). We prioritised tracts that showed a univariate association with sleep quality or chronotype and considered predictors identified by ≥80% of machine learning (ML) models as 'important'. The most important predictors of WM integrity were demographics (age, sex and education) and diagnosis (depressive and bipolar disorders). Subjective sleep quality only predicted FA in the perihippocampal cingulum tract, whereas chronotype had limited predictive importance for WM integrity. To further examine links with mood disorders, we conducted a subgroup analysis. In youth with depressive and bipolar disorders, chronotype emerged as an important (often top-ranking) feature, predicting FA in the cingulum (cingulate gyrus), AD in the anterior corona radiata and genu of the corpus callosum, and RD in the corona radiata, anterior corona radiata, and genu of corpus callosum. Subjective quality was not important in this subgroup analysis. In summary, chronotype predicted altered WM integrity in the corona radiata and corpus callosum, whereas subjective sleep quality had a less significant role, suggesting that circadian factors may play a more prominent role in WM integrity in emerging mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity and nature exposure provide health benefits. This study aimed to test the feasibility of an intervention designed to examine the effects of environmental quality on physical activity, sleep, and health status. METHODS: In this pilot feasibility study, we included 14 inactive adults from Limerick (Ireland) and Lahti (Finland), recruited using social media. The intervention was an 8-week self-guided programme of physical activity, in which participants were asked to select an outdoor route according to their convenience, engage in physical activity (walking or running) at least three times a week for at least 30 min/session, and record each session using a mobile app. Participants were provided with training sheets, self-adapted according to convenience, in an in-person meeting when detailed information was provided. Reminder messages were sent during the intervention. Time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was measured through an accelerometer over a 9-day measurement period (considering the 50th percentile: >P50, ≤P50). Sleep quality and general health status were self-reported. Measurements were taken in weeks 1 and 8. We analysed differences, between MVPA percentile groups and general sample, in change from week 1 to 8, using χ2 and paired t-tests, with significance at p values lower than 0·05. The study was approved by the ethics committee from the University of Limerick and Satakunta Universities. FINDINGS: 26 adults were enrolled in the study between Oct 3, 2022, and Feb 9, 2023, of whom 18 (69%) were women and eight (31%) were men, with a mean age of 46 years (SD 9·7). 14 (54%) of 26 adults completed the 8-week intervention, of whom 11 were women and three were men, with a mean age of 46 years (SD 10·79). On average, participants performed their training sessions 19 times (mean 19·2, SD 9·4). Mean time in MVPA decreased from 49·7 min (SD 27·0) at week 1 to 46·7 min (32·3) at week 8 (p=0·604); mean health status score increased from 66·43 (SD 26·63) to 68·57 (26·63; p=0·586); and the frequency of good sleepers increased from 50% to 64·3% (p=0·266). In both moments, participants classified in the higher MVPA percentile group (>P50) presented higher mean health status score and higher frequency of good sleepers then those in the lower percentile group (≤P50), although the differences were not significant. INTERPRETATION: Study limitations include the absence of a control group and the sample size. Although results were not significant, they were promising, since it might be an easy and low-cost strategy to increase physical activity with potential impact on public health. Lessons learned led to changes in the design, and a larger multicentre study will be carried out to understand the relationship of the variables in groups performing physical activity in green and "paved" spaces. Blood pressure (BP) follows a circadian rhythm intertwined with the sleep-wake cycle. Acute partial sleep deprivation (PSD; sleep ≤ 6 h) can increase BP, associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Acute exercise can reduce BP for up to 24 h, a phenomenon termed postexercise hypotension. The present study tested whether aerobic exercise could mitigate the augmented 24-h ambulatory BP caused by acute PSD. Twenty-four young otherwise healthy adults (22 ± 3 yr; 14 females; self-reported chronotypes: 6 early/10 intermediate/8 late; Pittsburgh sleep quality index: 17 good/7 poor sleepers) completed a randomized crossover trial in which, on different days, they slept normally (2300-0700), restricted sleep [0330-0700 (PSD)], and cycled for 50 min (70-80% predicted heart rate maximum) before PSD. Ambulatory BP was assessed every 30 min until 2100 the next day. Acute PSD increased 24-h systolic BP (control 117 ± 9 mmHg, PSD 122 ± 9 mmHg; P < 0.001) and prior exercise attenuated (exercise + PSD 120 ± 9 mmHg; P = 0.04 vs. PSD) but did not fully reverse this response (exercise + PSD, P = 0.02 vs. control). Subgroup analysis revealed that the 24-h systolic BP reduction following exercise was specific to late types (PSD 119 ± 7 vs. exercise + PSD 116 ± 6 mmHg; P < 0.05). Overall, habitual sleep quality was negatively correlated with the change in daytime systolic BP following PSD (r = -0.56, P < 0.01). These findings suggest that the ability of aerobic cycling exercise to counteract the hemodynamic effects of acute PSD in young adults may be dependent on chronotype and that habitual sleep quality can predict the daytime BP response to acute PSD.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We demonstrate that cycling exercise attenuates, but does not fully reverse, the augmented 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (BP) response caused by acute partial sleep deprivation (PSD). This response was primarily observed in late chronotypes. Furthermore, daytime BP after acute PSD is related to habitual sleep quality, with better sleepers being more prone to BP elevations. This suggests that habitual sleeping habits can influence BP responses to acute PSD and their interactions with prior cycling exercise.

We aim to examine the association of sleep duration, sleep quality, late chronotype, and circadian misalignment with glycemic control and risk of complications in young adults with youth-onset type 2 diabetes followed in the Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY) study. Self-reported sleep duration, quality, timing, and circadian misalignment were assessed via a modified Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, and chronotype was assessed via the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). We examined diabetes complications including loss of glycemic control (defined as hemoglobin A1c ≥8%), hypertension, dyslipidemia, albuminuria, and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Multivariable logistic regression models were constructed to assess associations between sleep and circadian measures with outcomes of interest, such as loss of glycemic control and diabetes complications. A total of 421 participants (34.2% male), mean age 23.6 ± 2.5 yr, mean body mass index (BMI) of 36.1 ± 8.3 kg/m2, and mean diabetes duration of 10.0 ± 1.5 yr were evaluated. Self-reported short sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, and sleep quality were not associated with loss of glycemic control or diabetes complications. Late self-reported bedtime (after midnight) on work/school nights, rather than self-expressed chronotype or circadian misalignment, was independently associated with loss of glycemic control. An association was seen between late bedtimes and albuminuria but was attenuated after adjusting for depression. In conclusion, late bedtime on work/school days, rather than short sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, or poor sleep quality, was independently associated with loss of glycemic control in this longitudinal cohort of young adults with youth-onset type 2 diabetes.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The prevalence of type 2 diabetes in youth is increasing at an alarming rate. Identifying potentially modifiable factors modulating glycemic control is critically important to reduce micro and macrovascular complications. In a large cohort of youth-onset type 2 diabetes, self-reported late bedtime on work/school days was independently associated with loss of glycemic control in this longitudinal cohort of young adults with youth-onset type 2 diabetes.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep quality may affect symptom experience in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Our aim was to investigate the relationship between sleep quality and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms using actigraphy and the experience sampling method. METHODS: Patients with IBS were recruited from a tertiary Neurogastroenterology clinic and the community. GI symptoms and mood were recorded on a smartphone application, 10 times per day, over 7 consecutive days. Subjective sleep quality was recorded every morning to reflect the night before. Objective measures of sleep quality were estimated from wrist-worn actigraphy. Cross-lagged structural equation models were built to assess the directionality of sleep-symptom relationships over time. RESULTS: Eighty patients with IBS completed the study (mean age: 37 years [range 20-68], 89% female, 78% community). Approximately 66% had a Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score ≥ 8, indicating a clinically significant sleep disturbance. Approximately 82% (95% CI: 72-90) screened positive for a sleep disorder, most commonly insomnia. In cross-lagged analysis, poor subjective sleep quality predicted next-day abdominal pain (0.036 < P < 0.040) and lower GI symptoms (0.030 < P < 0.032), but not vice versa. No significant relationship with GI symptoms was found for any objective sleep measure using actigraphy. DISCUSSION: Poor subjective sleep quality was associated with higher next-day lower GI symptom levels, but not vice versa. Objective sleep measures did not predict next-day abdominal symptoms, potentially supporting the conclusion that it is the perception of sleep quality that is most influential. This study may be used to guide future research into the effect of sleep interventions on GI symptoms.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the neurological alterations induced by Omicron infection, to compare brain changes in chronic insomnia with those in exacerbated chronic insomnia in Omicron patients, and to examine individuals without insomnia alongside those with new-onset insomnia. METHODS: In this study, a total of 135 participants were recruited between January 11 and May 4, 2023, including 26 patients with chronic insomnia without exacerbation, 24 patients with chronic insomnia with exacerbation, 40 patients with no sleep disorder, and 30 patients with new-onset insomnia after infection with Omicron (a total of 120 participants with different sleep statuses after infection), as well as 15 healthy controls who were never infected with Omicron. Neuropsychiatric data, clinical symptoms, and multimodal magnetic resonance imaging data were collected. The gray matter thickness and T1, T2, proton density, and perivascular space values were analyzed. Associations between changes in multimodal magnetic resonance imaging findings and neuropsychiatric data were evaluated with correlation analyses. RESULTS: Compared with healthy controls, gray matter thickness changes were similar in the patients who have and do not have a history of chronic insomnia groups after infection, including an increase in cortical thickness near the parietal lobe and a reduction in cortical thickness in the frontal, occipital, and medial brain regions. Analyses showed a reduced gray matter thickness in patients with chronic insomnia compared with those with an aggravation of chronic insomnia post-Omicron infection, and a reduction was found in the right medial orbitofrontal region (mean [SD], 2.38 [0.17] vs. 2.67 [0.29] mm; P < 0.001). In the subgroups of Omicron patients experiencing sleep deterioration, patients with a history of chronic insomnia whose insomnia symptoms worsened after infection displayed heightened medial orbitofrontal cortical thickness and increased proton density values in various brain regions. Conversely, patients with good sleep quality who experienced a new onset of insomnia after infection exhibited reduced cortical thickness in pericalcarine regions and decreased proton density values. In new-onset insomnia patients post-Omicron infection, the thickness in the right pericalcarine was negatively correlated with the Self-rating Anxiety Scale (r = - 0.538, P = 0.002, PFDR = 0.004) and Self-rating Depression Scale (r = - 0.406, P = 0.026, PFDR = 0.026) scores. CONCLUSIONS: These findings help us understand the pathophysiological mechanisms involved when Omicron invades the nervous system and induces various forms of insomnia after infection. In the future, we will continue to pay attention to the dynamic changes in the brain related to insomnia caused by Omicron infection.

Understanding the molecular genetic basis of animal magnet reception has been one of the big challenges in molecular biology. Recently it was discovered that the magnetic sense of Drosophila melanogaster is mediated by the ultraviolet (UV)-A/blue light photoreceptor cryptochrome (Cry). Here, using the fruit fly as a magnet-receptive model organism, we show that the magnetic field exposure (0.4-0.6 mT) extended lifespan under starvation, but not in cryptochrome mutant flies (cryb ). The magnetic field exposure increases motor function in wild type and neurodegenerative disease model flies. Furthermore, the magnetic field exposure improved sleep quality at night-time specific manner, but not in cryb . We also showed that repeated AC magnetic field exposure increased climbing activity in wild-type Drosophila, but not in cryb . The data suggests that magnetic field-dependent improvement of lifespan, sleep quality, and motor function is mediated through a cry-dependent pathway in Drosophila.

As children may react differently than adults in ICU environments, this study investigated what parents report disrupted the sleep of their child in a PICU. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a multicenter validation study of the Survey of Sleep quality in the PICU. SETTING: Four Northeastern U.S. PICUs, one hospital-based pediatric sleep laboratory. PATIENTS: Parents sleeping at the bedside of a child in the PICU or hospital-based sleep laboratory. INTERVENTIONS: Anonymous one-time survey eliciting parts of hospital or ICU environments that have been described as disruptive to sleep in validated adult ICU and pediatric inpatient questionnaires. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Level of sleep disruption was scored by Likert scale, with higher scores indicating more disruption. Age, demographics, baseline sleep, and PICU exposures were used to describe causes of sleep disruption in a PICU. Of 152 PICU parents, 71% of their children's sleep was disrupted significantly by at least one aspect of being in the PICU. The most prevalent were "being in pain or uncomfortable because they are sick" (38%), "not sleeping at home" (30%), "alarms on machines" (28%), and "not sleeping on their home schedule" (26%). Only 5% were disrupted by excessive nocturnal light exposure. Overall sleep disruption was not different across four PICUs or in those receiving sedation. The validation study control group, healthy children undergoing polysomnography, had less sleep disruption than those in a PICU despite sleeping in a hospital-based sleep laboratory. CONCLUSIONS: There are multiple aspects of critical care environments that affect the sleep of children, which are different from that of adults, such as disruption to home schedules. Future interventional sleep promotion bundles should include sedated children and could be applicable in multicenter settings.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the sleep and circadian health of critical survivors 12 months after hospital discharge and to evaluate a possible effect of the severity of the disease within this context. DESIGN: Observational, prospective study. SETTING: Single-center study. PATIENTS: Two hundred sixty patients admitted to the ICU due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The cohort was composed of 260 patients (69.2% males), with a median (quartile 1-quartile 3) age of 61.5 years (52.0-67.0 yr). The median length of ICU stay was 11.0 days (6.00-21.8 d), where 56.2% of the patients required invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) revealed that 43.1% of the cohort presented poor sleep quality 12 months after hospital discharge. Actigraphy data indicated an influence of the disease severity on the fragmentation of the circadian rest-activity rhythm at the 3- and 6-month follow-ups, which was no longer significant in the long term. Still, the length of the ICU stay and the duration of IMV predicted a higher fragmentation of the rhythm at the 12-month follow-up with effect sizes (95% CI) of 0.248 (0.078-0.418) and 0.182 (0.005-0.359), respectively. Relevant associations between the PSQI and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (rho = 0.55, anxiety; rho = 0.5, depression) as well as between the fragmentation of the rhythm and the diffusing lung capacity for carbon monoxide (rho = -0.35) were observed at this time point. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings reveal a great prevalence of critical survivors presenting poor sleep quality 12 months after hospital discharge. Actigraphy data indicated the persistence of circadian alterations and a possible impact of the disease severity on the fragmentation of the circadian rest-activity rhythm, which was attenuated at the 12-month follow-up. This altogether highlights the relevance of considering the sleep and circadian health of critical survivors in the long term.

Short and insufficient sleep are prevalent and associated with cardiovascular disease, with the sympathetic nervous system as a suspected mediator. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between objective, actigraphy-based total sleep time (TST), sleep efficiency (SE), and cardiovascular and sympathetic regulation in healthy adults. We hypothesized that short TST and low SE would be associated with elevated resting blood pressure, heart rate (HR), and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). Participants included 94 individuals [46 males, 48 females, age: 30 ± 15 yr, body mass index (BMI): 26 ± 4 kg/m2]. All participants underwent at least 7 days of at-home, wristwatch actigraphy monitoring (avg: 10 ± 3 days). Seated blood pressures were assessed using brachial blood pressure measurements, followed by a 10-minute supine autonomic testing session consisting of continuous HR (electrocardiogram), beat-by-beat blood pressure (finger plethysmograph), and MSNA (microneurography) monitoring. Partial correlations were used to determine the relationship between sleep and cardiovascular parameters while accounting for the influence of age, sex, and BMI. TST was not associated with MAP (R = -0.105, P = 0.321), HR (R = 0.093, P = 0.383), or MSNA burst frequency (BF; R = -0.168, P = 0.112) and burst incidence (BI; R = -0.162, P = 0.124). Similarly, SE was not associated with MAP (R = -0.088, P = 0.408), HR (R = -0.118, P = 0.263), MSNA BF (R = 0.038, P = 0.723), or MSNA BI (R = 0.079, P = 0.459). In contrast to recent preliminary findings, our results do not support a significant association between actigraphy-based sleep duration or efficiency and measures of resting blood pressure, heart rate, and MSNA.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The present study investigated the independent association between actigraphy-based sleep duration, efficiency, and measures of blood pressure, heart rate, and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in adult males and females. Contrary to our hypothesis, the findings do not support an independent association between habitual sleep and cardiovascular or sympathetic neural activity. However, these findings do not preclude a potential association between these parameters in populations with sleep disorders and/or cardiovascular disease.

OBJECTIVE: Abundant research has linked nightly sleep as an antecedent of daily psychosocial experiences; however, less is known about sleep's influence on daily expectations of these experiences. Therefore, this research examined the day-to-day associations of sleep quality, duration, and efficiency with next-day expectations for stress(ors) and positive experiences, as well as whether these expectations were related to end-of-day reports of physical symptoms. METHODS: In Study 1, U.S. adults ( n = 354; ages 19 to 74) completed twice-daily diaries for 10 weekdays about sleep, expectations for encountering daily stressors and positive events, and physical symptoms. In Study 2, adults in Canada ( n = 246; ages 25 to 87) wore a sleep watch for 14 consecutive days and completed mobile surveys 5×/day about sleep, stressfulness and pleasantness expectations, and physical symptoms. RESULTS: Multilevel models indicated that self-reported sleep quality and duration, but not efficiency, were associated with lower next-day expectations for stressors (Study 1) and stressfulness (Study 2). Self-reported sleep quality (Study 1) and all sleep indices (Study 2) predicted greater next-day expectations for positive events and pleasantness, respectively. For actigraphy-assessed sleep (Study 2), only longer-than-usual actigraphic sleep duration was associated with lower stressfulness expectations, whereas both sleep duration and efficiency were positively linked with daily pleasantness expectations. Only pleasantness expectations (Study 2)-but not daily stressfulness and event expectations (Study 1)-predicted end-of-day physical symptoms. CONCLUSION: Findings suggest the importance of sleep on expectations of next-day stress and positive experiences, of which may have implications for daily physical health.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests a link between positive social relationship perceptions and improved sleep (e.g., quality, efficiency) across the life span. Less work has probed the directionality of these relationships. Here, we report findings from the first study to examine bidirectional between- and within-person associations between loneliness and emotional support with daily life measures of sleep. METHODS: Participants were 389 healthy adults aged 40 to 64 years (61% female) who completed hourly surveys assessing loneliness and perceptions of emotional support over the course of 4 days. Measures of actigraphy-assessed sleep and nightly sleep quality were also assessed for 7 to 10 days. RESULTS: Individuals with lower average daily loneliness showed higher sleep quality and efficiency than individuals with higher loneliness (r = -0.19, p < .001; r = -0.14, p = .008, respectively), and greater average emotional support was likewise linked with better sleep quality (r = 0.18, p < .001). Controlling for neuroticism attenuated the effects of average loneliness on sleep. Within-person analyses showed unexpected bidirectional effects. Specifically, days in which people felt relatively lonelier were followed by nights with greater sleep efficiency (γ = 1.08, p = .015), and nights when people reported relatively poorer sleep quality were followed by days with greater emotional support (γ = -0.04, p = .013). These unexpected findings are probed in exploratory analyses. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with higher loneliness and lower emotional support report poorer sleep quality and efficiency, on average. Day-to-day fluctuations in perceptions of social relationships may affect the following night's sleep, and vice versa.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep quality and duration are important for biological restoration and promotion of psychological well-being. Optimism may facilitate or result from sufficient sleep, but questions remain as to directionality. The present study tested how optimism is associated with levels of and variability in sleep quantity and quality in a longitudinal burst design. METHODS: Midlife and older women ( N = 199) reported their sleep quantity and quality in online diaries for a 7-day period, every 3 months for 2 years. Optimism was measured at baseline and end-of-study. Multilevel models tested the effects of optimism on sleep. Linear regression models tested the effect of sleep on optimism. RESULTS: Baseline optimism was associated with higher sleep quality ( γ = 2.13 [1.16 to 3.11], p < .0001) and lower intraindividual variability (IIV; night-to-night and wave-to-wave) in sleep quantity (night-to-night: γ = -0.07 [-0.13 to -0.005], p = .03; wave-to-wave: b = -0.07 [-0.12 to -0.02], p = .003). In turn, higher average sleep quality (but not quantity) was associated with higher optimism at end-of-study ( b = 0.02 [0.007 to 0.03], p = .002). Variability in sleep was unrelated to optimism. CONCLUSIONS: Optimism may play an important role in maintaining sleep quality and consistency in sleep quantity, perhaps by buffering stress. Similarly, sleep quality may play an important role in maintaining optimism. The cycle whereby optimism and sleep enhance one another could improve physical health and psychological well-being among aging adults.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the factors that predispose or precipitate greater intraindividual variability (IIV) in sleep. We further examined the potential consequences of IIV on overall sleep quality and health outcomes, including whether these relationships were found in both self-reported and actigraphy-measured sleep IIV. METHODS: In Study 1, 699 US adults completed a Sleep Intra-Individual Variability Questionnaire and self-reported psychosocial, sleep quality, and health outcomes. In Study 2, 100 university students wore actigraphy and completed psychosocial, sleep, and health surveys at multiple timepoints. RESULTS: In cross-sectional analyses that controlled for mean sleep duration, predisposing/precipitating factors to greater IIV were being an underrepresented racial/ethnic minority (Study 1: F = 13.95, p < .001; Study 2: F = 7.03, p = .009), having greater stress (Study 2: r values ≥ 0.32, p values ≤ .002) or trait vulnerability to stress (Study 1: r values ≥ 0.15, p values < .001), and showing poorer time management (Study 1: r values ≤ -0.12, p values ≤ .004; Study 2: r values ≤ -0.23, p values ≤ .028). In addition, both studies showed that greater sleep IIV was associated with decreased overall sleep quality, independent of mean sleep duration (Study 1: r values ≥ 0.20, p values < .001; Study 2: r values ≥ 0.33, p values ≤ .001). Concordance across subjective and objective IIV measures was modest ( r values = 0.09-0.35) and similar to concordance observed for subjective-objective mean sleep duration measures. CONCLUSION: Risk for irregular sleep patterns is increased in specific demographic groups and may be precipitated by, or contribute to, higher stress and time management inefficiencies. Irregular sleep may lead to poor sleep quality and adverse health outcomes, independent of mean sleep duration, underscoring the importance of addressing sleep consistency.

OBJECTIVE: To compare dimensions of financial hardship and self-reported sleep quality among Black women with versus without systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS: Participants were 402 Black women (50% with validated diagnosis of SLE) living in Georgia between 2017 and 2020. Black women with SLE were recruited from a population-based cohort established in Atlanta, and Black women without SLE were recruited to be of comparable age and from the same geographic areas as SLE women. Financial hardship was measured using three different scales: financial adjustments, financial setbacks, and financial strain. Sleep was assessed continuously using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scale. Each dimension of financial hardship was analyzed separately in SLE-stratified multivariable linear regression models and adjusted by sociodemographic and health status factors. RESULTS: Dimensions of financial hardship were similarly distributed across the two groups. Sleep quality was worse in Black women with, versus without, SLE (p < .001). Among Black women with SLE, financial adjustment was positively associated with a 0.40-unit increase in poor sleep quality (95% CI = 0.12-0.67, p = .005). When accounting for cognitive depressive symptoms, financial setbacks and strain were somewhat attenuated for Black women with SLE. Overall, no associations between financial hardships and sleep quality were observed for the women without SLE. CONCLUSIONS: Black women with SLE who experience financial hardships may be more at risk for poor sleep quality than Black women without SLE. Economic interventions targeting this population may help improve their overall health and quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep quality is an important health-protective factor. Psychosocial factors, including attachment orientation, may be valuable for understanding who is at risk of poor sleep quality and associated adverse health outcomes. High attachment anxiety is reliably associated with adverse health outcomes, whereas high attachment avoidance is associated with adverse health outcomes when co-occurring with poor self-regulatory capacity, indexed by heart rate variability (HRV). We examined the associations between attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance, HRV, and sleep quality. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from a sample of 171 older adults measured four times over 1 year ( M = 66.18 years old; 67.83% women), we separated the between-person variance (which we call "trait") and within-person variance (which we call "state") for attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance, and HRV (via the root mean square of successive differences). Sleep quality was measured with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. RESULTS: Higher trait attachment anxiety was associated with poorer global sleep quality ( B = 0.22, p = .005). Higher state attachment avoidance was associated with poorer sleep quality ( B = -0.13, p = .01), except for those with higher trait HRV. Higher state attachment anxiety was associated with poorer sleep quality ( B = -0.15, p = .002), except for those with higher or mean trait HRV. Higher trait attachment anxiety was associated with poorer sleep quality ( B = -0.31, p = .02), except for those with higher trait HRV. CONCLUSIONS: High trait HRV mitigated the adverse effects of attachment insecurity on sleep quality. Our results suggest that people with high trait HRV had greater self-regulation capacity, which may enable them to enact emotion regulation strategies effectively.
